  • Steve Carell Staged an ‘Office’ Reunion (and Trolled Fans About a Reboot) on ‘SNL’

Steve Carell Staged an ‘Office’ Reunion (and Trolled Fans About a Reboot) on ‘SNL’

    Jenna Fischer/Instagram

Steve Carell has been starring in dramas for so many years now that his return to comedy as the host of this past weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” was mined for laughs in the show’s promos. But the actor will always be Michael Scott from “The Office,” and Carell couldn’t help but get fans’ hopes up about a possible return to Dunder Mifflin during his monologue — with a little help from his former co-workers.

Of course, as has been reported many times before, no such reboot has been officially announced by NBC just yet, though rumors have been flying for a while now. Carell addressed those whispers head-on — on his former network, no less — on Saturday, echoing recent comments he made about his doubts that the show would work today.

And then Ellie Kemper (who played Erin), Ed Helms (who played Andy), and Jenna Fischer (who played Pam, and has been vocal about wanting to appear in a reboot/revival) all showed up to demand that Carell sign off on the idea — and cash in.

“Let’s get that money, Steve!” Kemper urged Carell.

“You wouldn’t have to do all those sad movies anymore,” Helms noted of the financial windfall.

Fischer even tried to use the show’s own plot to convince Carell, revealing the real final words Pam said as she bid Michael a tearful farewell in his last episode: “Steve, don’t be a d*ck, do the reboot!”

Carell seemed to be swayed by this last admonishment, calling his castmates to the stage.

“I am proud to announce, officially, that… we have a great show tonight!” the actor said, eliciting an audible groan from the audience. Michael Scott always has to make jokes, doesn’t he?

Maybe next time John Krasinski should join the gang to encourage Carell to reconsider.

  • Steve Carell Doesn’t Think ‘The Office’ Would Work Today

Steve Carell Doesn’t Think ‘The Office’ Would Work Today

    NBC

While there have been rumblings for a while now about NBC rebooting beloved comedy “The Office,” nothing concrete has come from those rumors. And according to former star Steve Carell, that’s probably for the best.

In a wide-ranging interview with Esquire, Carell discussed some of his most famous roles, including that of dim-witted Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott. While the actor said that he and the show’s producers worked hard to make Michael have a heart behind some of his more boneheaded behavior, Carell doesn’t think that that kind of comedy would really connect with today’s audiences. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

” … [I]t might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago,” the actor explained.

    He continued:

“The climate’s different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today—which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

Carell certainly has a point about Michael’s behavior not aging well. Even when viewed through a comedic lens, it’s still a bit shocking to watch some earlier episodes, in which Pam’s body is mentioned far more than you probably remember, or anti-LGBT terms are tossed around with abandon. They’re obviously jokes meant to make the person uttering them look bad, but they’re still unsettling, and that reaction is exactly what Carell says may not make the humor translate today.

Of course, the show is still wildly popular on Netflix — especially with younger viewers, who are just now discovering “The Office” for the first time — and that suggests that audiences can discern for themselves what’s truly offensive or not. And Carell aside, many original cast members — including both Jim and Pam, a.k.a. John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer — have said that they’d happily reprise their roles again, should NBC’s reboot ever get off the ground.

We don’t know if that will ever happen, but we have a feeling that fans will eagerly tune in if it does.

John Krasinski Proves He’s ‘a Real Action Guy’ Now in Hilarious Colbert Fight

    CBS

John Krasinski is Jack Ryan now — and he’s not here for your Harrison Ford comparisons.

Krasinski was on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last night, trying to promote his new Amazon series. He worked hard to prove to Colbert that he’s an “action guy” now — and not just a nice guy who does comedy, like Jim from “The Office.”

And yet — even in the end, after defeating his nemesis in true action hero fashion — Krasinski looked in the camera to gloat. As Colbert noted, while falling action villain style from the roof of a building: “That’s soooo Jiiiiiiimmmm!”

“The Office” alum was “forced” to do 10 push-ups to prove his action chops. (The audience appreciated that.) And he had a classic stunt fight bit with Colbert. (Shout-out to the photo on the wall of Krasinski’s wife and “A Quiet Place” co-star Emily Blunt.)

No action film is complete without an elevator fight, and this one had a cameo from Krasinski’s “The Office” co-star Ellie Kemper.

Watch the whole thing; the action bit starts around the 3:05 mark:

Stephen Colbert does have a nice villain beard now. It works.

“Jack Ryan” is now streaming on Amazon.

  • Relive Some of Jim’s Best Moments With This Official ‘Office’ Supercut

    NBC

More than five years after it left the air, fans still can’t get enough of NBC sitcom “The Office,” so much so that the network is rumored to be working on a reboot/revival of the series right now. Whether or not that new show pans out, it will be hard to top the characters who came before, and high on that list is Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), a television heartthrob seemingly invented solely to inspire rapturous BuzzFeed listicles.

While calling something “the best” is a recipe for disaster on the internet, the folks who run the official YouTube channel for “The Office” claim to have cobbled together the definitive moments from the series featuring Big Tuna. And while we’d probably argue for the inclusion of at least a dozen additional scenes (seriously, no “Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica”? Nothing from “Niagara”? No Three-Hole Punch Jim?), this clip is still a great reminder of what made the character so beloved in the first place.

We’re always down to re-watch the surprising, gleeful moment when Jim and Pam discover they’re expecting, and the “Vol-de-mort!” chant will never get old, either. Even if we don’t necessarily agree with all of the selections or omissions, we appreciate any opportunity to relive the series. (That’s what YouTube is for, anyway.)

Jim heads back to the office at the start of the new teaser for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.”

Then things go boom. Then he gets shirtless. But let’s not be creepy about it.  Pam wouldn’t approve.

John Krasinski — hot off “A Quiet Place,” but forever Jim Halpert from “The Office” — is the new Jack Ryan in Amazon’s upcoming spy series.

Season 1 is composed of eight one-hour episodes, costarring Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) as James Greer, and Abbie Cornish (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) as Cathy Mueller.

The series premieres on Amazon Prime Video August 31.

Watch the official trailer, followed by the most recent Presidents Trailer in honor of July 4th:

    Here’s the basic synopsis:

Jack Ryan, an up-and-coming CIA analyst, is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that has him up against a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

The first teaser, scene clip, came out back in October.

John Krasinski follows in the Jack Ryan footsteps of Alec Baldwin in “The Hunt for Red October” (1990), then Harrison Ford in both “Patriot Games” (1992) and “Clear and Present Danger” (1994). Years later, Ben Affleck was Jack Ryan in “The Sum of All Fears” (2002), and then Chris Pine for his own movie, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (2014).

Krasinski’s debut will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting August 31. Meanwhile, Krasinski’s horror hit “A Quiet Place” arrives on DVD/Blu-ray this coming Tuesday, July 10.

  • Jenna Fischer Finally Reveals What Pam Said to Michael in ‘The Office’ Goodbye

Rewatch the scene and cry all over again.

The Office” fans. She was answering questions via an Instagram Live video, and revealed what she as Pam Beesly Halpert told Michael Scott (Steve Carell) after his last day at Dunder Mifflin before moving to Colorado.

In the scene — in Season 7, Episode 22, “Goodbye, Michael” — Michael is at the airport when he takes off his microphone and breaks the fourth wall to face the documentary crew. (And says “That’s what she said” AFTER his mic is off — which is somehow perfect and heartbreaking.)

As Michael walks away in the airport, we see Pam rush over and hug him, and they have a brief conversation that we don’t get to hear.

Fischer revealed what she and Steve Carell were talking about in that scene:

“That was me talking to Steve. I told him all the ways I was going to miss him when he left our show. Those were real tears and a real goodbye. That was a really emotional scene.”

She said goodbye to both Steve and Michael, as both Jenna and Pam, in a special moment they created together.

Watch the full scene again:How is the wound still so fresh?

Still in “Office” mode, Fischer revealed that her favorite episodes are “Dinner Party” (Season 4, Episode 13) and “Health Care” (Season 1, Episode 3).

Fischer currently stars in “Splitting Up Together,” which airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.
