Arriving on Peacock on September 4th with all 10 episodes of its first season is ‘The Paper’, which represents the latest mockumentary co-created by Greg Daniels, who brought us the American version of ‘The Office’.

‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Nathan for You’ writer Michael Koman is the co-creator here, with the cast including Domhnall Gleeson (‘Ex Machina’), Sabrina Impacciatore (‘The White Lotus’), Chelsea Frei (‘The Moodys’), Ramona Young (‘Never Have I Ever’), Tim Key (‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’) and, reprising his ‘Office’ role as Oscar Martinez, Oscar Nuñez.

    Initial Thoughts

Given that the American adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s classic British sitcom ‘The Office’ took a while to find its own style and that other mockumentaries including ‘Parks and Recreation’ had their own growing pains on the way to successful runs, perhaps ‘The Paper’ deserves some measure of patience to bed in and let audiences get to know its various characters.

Yet on the evidence of the initial batch of episodes, this one might face more of an uphill struggle as it looks to step from the shadow of the original.

    Script and Direction

Daniels in particular knows how to make this format work, but the problem is partly that ‘The Paper’ comes across as going through very familiar motions. There are the looks to camera, the wacky characters causing issues for the more straight-arrow ones, and the to-camera interviews.

Another issues that, barring one or two exceptions, the characters aren’t as memorable as their predecessors.

The directorial style, meanwhile, is the same basic documentary approach, no-frills, but effective in its own way.

    Cast and Performances

Domhnall Gleeson throws himself into the role of enthusiastic new editor-in-chief Ned, who dreams of bringing the paper back to past glories. Also on the positive side are the likes of Chelsea Frei as compositor-turned-reporter Mare, whose measured enthusiasm is a good foil for Ned’s own passions.

Comedy assassin Tim Key is great in the supporting role of a toilet paper executive who barely tolerates the presence of the newspaper, but the writing doesn’t always service him, and the part comes across as repetitive.

While ‘The Office’ dealt with the mundanity of the American workplace, this new show adds in the disappearing nature of the printed press and the endless rise of internet clickbait into the mix. But the topics don’t so far lend themselves to classic comedy.

But perhaps, given time, this one can find its gear.

‘The Paper’ receives 68 out of 100.

What’s the plot of ‘The Paper’?

The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, and the eager publisher trying to revive it.

    Who stars in ‘The Paper’?

    Domhnall Gleeson as Ned Sampson
    Sabrina Impacciatore as Esmerelda Grand
    Chelsea Frei as Mare Pritti
    Ramona Young as Nicole Lee
    Tim Key as Ken Davies
    Oscar Nuñez as Oscar Martinez

  • The Minions Invade ‘The Office’ in Crossover Video

If you’re Universal, and you have Steve Carell as the main voice in your big new animated family movie ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’, how are you going to exploit that?

Well, if you also have beloved sitcom ‘The Office’ as one of your big titles on streaming service Peacock – a show that just so happened to be one of Carell’s big breaks – you look to employ a little corporate synergy. Literally, in this case.

It also helps if it’s actually fun, which this video is, recreating the ‘Office’ credits while swapping out Carell’s Michael Scott for his Gru character and putting the various main Minions in place of the ‘Office’ characters played by the likes of John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer.

‘The Office’, of course, was adapted from the UK show created by Ricky Gervais, and brought to the US by Greg Daniels. It’s the story of the employees of Dunder Mifflin, a paper sales company where Michael Scott is the branch manager.

He’s the sort of boss who thinks he’s more fun than he really is, a good-natured sort with a terrible taste in jokes and references, who is perennially upbeat. Around him are a staff of different types – the rule-following martinet weirdo (Wilson’s Dwight Schrute), the talented but unfulfilled everyman (Krasinski’s Jim Halpert) and the sweet, thoughtful receptionist (Fischer’s Pam Beesly).

Then there’s the supporting cast with their own quirks, including Angela Kinsey’s Angela Martin, an uptight, cat-loving accountant, Brian Baumgartner’s slobby fellow finance team member Kevin, Mindy Kaling as enthusiastic customer service representative and Creed Bratton’s Creed, a supremely strange man with a mysterious background.

While there were initial concerns about being able to replicate the success of the British series, and critics complained when the first episode largely replicated the UK version, ‘The Office’ grew into a huge success, running for nine seasons and expanding its fanbase thanks to time on Netflix and now, Peacock.

As for ‘Rise of Gru’, the latest extension of the ‘Despicable Me’ movie universe acts as a sequel to the 2015 ‘Minions’ spin-off movie and a prequel to the original ‘Despicable Me’.

Carell is back to voice the strangely-accented Gru, here portrayed in the 1970s as a child with big supervillain ambitions. But when he’s invited to interview for an open slot on his favourite villain team The Vicious Six, he’s mocked by the gang for being a kid. Yet after Gru steals the special Zodiac Stone that the Six intend to use to become more powerful, the chase is on.

It’ll end up involving an acupuncturist who teaches kung-fu, a wronged former leader of the villain gang and a chatty new Minion called Otto who is, if it’s possible, even more of a nuisance than the likes of Kevin, Stuart and Bob.

‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ is in theaters from tomorrow.

  • Steve Carell Reuniting with John Krasinski for ‘IF’

Steve Carrell in 'Welcome to Marwen'
Steve Carrell in ‘Welcome to Marwen’

It’s been years since Steve Carell and John Krasinski were co-stars on the hugely successful sitcom ‘The Office’, and while the pair has teamed up from time to time on other things, they haven’t made a movie together before. Krasinski is looking to change that with new fantasy comedy ‘IF’.

The film, which Krasinski is planning to write, direct, produce and appear in (like he did for both ‘A Quiet Place’ movies), already has Ryan Reynolds in the lead. ‘IF’ – then called ‘Imaginary Friends’ – was first announced back in 2019.

Based on an idea by Krasinski, the story has officially been listed as “a child’s journey to rediscover their imagination”, and reportedly follows a man (Reynolds) who can see and communicate with other peoples’ imaginary friends, who, it turns out, are not so imaginary. He befriends those who have been forgotten or discarded, but some become irretrievably evil, and he must find a way to stop them.

It all sounds like a cross between 1991’s Phoebe Cates comedy ‘Drop Dead Fred’ and the ‘Doctor Dolittle’ concept (though he could talk to animals, not fantasy friends). Will it also manage to make us all cry like Bing Bong in Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’?

And Carell is only one of the new cast members that Krasinski has rounded up to co-star in the movie. There’s also Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator and star of comedy series ‘Fleabag’ who also adapted and ran the first season of ‘Killing Eve.’ Fiona Shaw, one of the stars of ‘Killing Eve’, is also joining ‘IF’, along with young ‘Minari’ breakout Alan Kim and veteran actor Louis Gossett Jr., probably best known for movies such as ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ and ‘Enemy Mine’ in the 1980s.

    Ryan Reynolds/YouTube

Finally, young actress Cailey Fleming is part of the cast, having been seen in ‘The Walking Dead’ and as young Rey in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’.

Carell, of course, is no stranger to screens – though ‘The Office’ boosted his profile even higher than it already was, he’s since gone on to movies including the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise (with a new entry due this summer), ‘The Big Short’ and ‘Vice’, both for director Adam McKay.

Krasinski has increasingly been working as a director and producer, though he also still stars in the ‘Jack Ryan’ TV series for Amazon and will be heard on cinema screens this year in the animated ‘DC League Of Super-Pets’, playing Superman. He’s also developing a third ‘Quiet Place’ movie, though he won’t direct that one.

Paramount Pictures is making the new movie, and both Krasinski’s Sunday Night and Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production companies have deals there.

The movie is scheduled for release on November 17, 2023.

  • ‘The Office’ To Stream Exclusively on NBCUniversal Starting in 2021

‘The Office’ To Stream Exclusively on NBCUniversal Starting in 2021

    NBC

If you want to stream “The Office” in the future, it won’t be on Netflix.

The Emmy-winning NBC series will leave its current streaming in 2020 and then only be available via NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, beginning in 2021.

But, unlike the other upcoming streaming services from Disney, WarnerMedia and Apple, NBCU’s site will be free to the company’s pay-TV subscribers and supported by advertising.

It will launch across Comcast in the US and Sky in the UK, reaching more than 50 million households from the moment it goes live in mid-2020, according to Deadline.

If don’t have either of those cable providers, it’s not clear what your access is. Perhaps that’s where NBCU’s stand-alone, subscription version, which is also in the works, would come in.

And it looks like there will be an “Office”-free gap between the time the show leaves Netflix and the time it hits NBCU’s service.

During the NBCU upfront presentation in May, ad sales chief Linda Yaccarino said, “Next year we’re going to unveil the largest initiative in our company’s history: We’re going to have our own ad-supported platform. While other companies are pushing advertisers out, we’re bringing them in. It will have a slate of originals and a gigantic library of all favorites. The shows that people love the most and stream the most are coming home at a price that every person can afford: free.”

Although there’s no official launch date for the NBCU site, it’s expected to be timed to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Other NBC shows will also be “coming home” to the network’s new service, the company announced earlier this year.

NBCUniversal Says Its Most Popular Shows Are ‘Coming Home’ to New Streaming Service

    The Office
    NBC

Speculation continues over where popular TV shows like “The Office” will stream as new services emerge.

NBCUniversal discussed its upcoming streamer during an event in New York on Monday, and the company’s  chairman of advertising and client partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, shared some interesting information. She told the audience that when the ad-supported platform launches in 2020, “the shows that people love the most and stream the most are coming home,” per Deadline. But before anyone becomes too alarmed, she noted that the service will be free given that it’s paid for by ads.

The company is planning to have “a gigantic library of all favorites,” and “The Office” seems like a great candidate. The show is the current most-watched show on Netflix, as the Wall Street Journal reported, so it could be a big draw at some point after NBCUniversal launches its streaming service. In fact, WSJ noted that Yaccarino talked about various NBC characters, including Jim and Pam of “The Office.” Netflix does, however, have a deal for exclusive streaming rights until 2021.

The streaming landscape continues to evolve. WarnerMedia is also launching its own service, and there’s talk that “Friends” — another favorite on Netflix — will move to it. We may have to get used to some changes (like commercials), but at least these beloved shows will still be available to watch somewhere.

Watch Steve Carell Bring ‘Office’ Co-Star Jenna Fischer to Tears

    Busy Tonight still
    Busy Tonight/YouTube

It has been nearly six years since the last episode of “The Office” aired, and still its stars have a special bond.

Jenna Fischer (Pam) was a guest on Busy Philipps‘s late-night talk show, “Busy Tonight,” on Tuesday, so the host called on Fischer’s former co-stars to send early birthday presents for her to open on camera. Fischer seemed to love them all, but it was a gift from Steve Carell (Michael) that brought her to tears. He really nailed it, as you’ll see below.

As touching (yet also scary) as Carell’s surprise was, we’re impressed with the others as well. “The Office” cast clearly bonded during their years together, much like their Dunder Mifflin counterparts did. It’s not surprising that there’s always talk about them reuniting for an “Office” revival. We could see it happening someday.

New episodes of “Busy Tonight” air Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. ET/PT on E!.

If you imagined a happy ending for the most volatile couple on “The Office,” Mindy Kaling is here to crush your hopes and dreams. And we can’t blame her.

The actress’s character, Kelly Kapoor, and her off-and-on boyfriend, Ryan Howard (B. J. Novak), were a hot mess, to put it mildly. Although they were together when the series ended, their track record was horrible. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Kaling recently expressed doubt that they’d still be together. In fact, in a new Variety interview, the actress speculated that their relationship would have ended very, very badly.

“There’s not an insignificant part of me that thinks that Kelly might be in jail; a crime of passion,” Kaling told Variety. “The character just kept getting a little bit more and more unhinged. I don’t want to say that she murdered Ryan but like I’m also not convinced that he’s still alive in the world of ‘The Office.’”

How can we disagree? Kelly and Ryan — especially Ryan — put each other through a lot, from cheating to mind games to a fake pregnancy. They took dysfunctional to a new level, and they never seemed to grow and mature.

That said, we hope the hypothetical homicide didn’t happen. If an “Office” revival ever happens, we’d like to see both characters return.

  • Steve Carell to Star in ‘Space Force’ Workplace Comedy From ‘Office’ Creator Greg Daniels

Steve Carell to Star in ‘Space Force’ Workplace Comedy From ‘Office’ Creator Greg Daniels

    NBC

    It’s an “Office” reunion!

Steve Carell is starring in a workplace comedy titled “Space Force” that he co-created with his “Office” boss Greg Daniels for Netflix. It will follow the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services — Space Force. The idea was inspired by President Donald Trump’s order last June to establish the initiative.

Netflix released a brief teaser for the series:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QgJR4pAPlE&feature=youtu.be

There’s been a lot of chatter in the last few years about potentially rebooting “The Office,” though Carell has steadily denied being interested in it.

The actor has been very busy with his film career; just this past year, he appeared in “Welcome to Marwen,” “Beautiful Boy,” and “Vice.” He’s also playing the male lead in Apple’s upcoming morning talk show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Carell’s salary (including his co-creator and executive producer fees) will set a new overall talent record.

‘The Office’ Cast Reunites, Igniting Reboot Talk

    NBC

What’s better than “The Office” reunion? “The Office” reunion with waffles.

Several cast members from the dearly departed NBC comedy got together for brunch and the reunion has reignited talk of a revival or reboot — which star Steve Carell recently shot down.

Well, maybe Carell isn’t on board (and he doesn’t appear in the brunch photo). Still, it’s great to see so much of the gang back together: Rainn Wilson, Creed Bratton, Paul Lieberstein, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Jenna Fischer, Leslie David Baker, showrunner Greg Daniels, Phyllis Smith, Oscar Nunez, and Ed Helms. The brunch was hosted by Daniels.

“I turned to Ed and said, ‘I feel like we are at a family reunion,’” wrote Kinsey while posting the pic on her own Twitter. “He smiled and said, ‘We are.’”

Not everyone could make brunch. Notably missing are Carell, John Krasinski, Craig Robinson, Mindy Kaling, B.J. Novak, Ellie Kemper, and Kate Flannery.

Still, the mini-reunion caused fans of the “The Office,” which ran from 2005 to 2013, to make stronger calls for a revival or reboot. This, despite what star Steve Carell recently said in his monologue on “Saturday Night Live.” Most of the bit was centered on Carell rebuffing the idea of a reboot.

“I just don’t think it’s the best idea. I think we should just leave it alone,” he said.
