A ‘Supergirl’ Movie Is in the Works at Warner Bros.: Report

    DC Comics

She’s been headlining her own series on the small screen for several years, and now, Supergirl is poised to take flight in theaters: Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a movie based around the heroine.

That’s the word from Deadline, which says that the project is still in the early stages of development. According to the trade, Warner Bros. and DC have already hired a writer, Oren Uziel (” 22 Jump Street,” “The Cloverfield Paradox,” the upcoming “Sonic The Hedgehog”), who’s currently crafting a script, though there’s no producer in place just yet.

As Deadline notes, it might seem odd on the surface odd that Warner Bros. would want to tackle Supergirl now, since we still don’t know when we’ll next see her cousin, Superman, hit the big screen. The trade says it’s unclear if Henry Cavill‘s character — whose last standalone was 2013’s “Man of Steel” — will be appearing in this new flick, but adds that recent rumors that the studio and DC “are looking to create a new template for future Superman movies” may make the upcoming “Supergirl” the “likely place to hatch a new persona.”

Supergirl will almost certainly be a new persona, too, since Warner Bros. has largely ignored the DC-verse that’s been portrayed on the small screen on The CW. Sorry, Melissa Benoist. (She and TV’s “The Flash” star Grant Gustin can commiserate together.)

    Stay tuned.

    The CW

The CW had a big weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. Here are just a few highlights and trailers.

    • “Supergirl”
“Supergirl” is making history with the first transgender superhero. Transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines was cast in Season 4 as Nia Nal (aka Dreamer), described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.” Other new series regulars were announced Saturday: April Parker Jones (as Col. Haley) and David Ajala (as Manchester Black). “Supergirl” returns Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.

    • “The Flash”
“The Flash” Season 5 is adding Chris Klein — remember him, from “American Pie”? — as the new villain Cicada. According to The CW’s press release, “next season’s scourge of Central City” is a “grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans.” And he’s looking “to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time.” “The Flash” returns Oct. 9.

    • “Riverdale”
“Riverdale” Season 3 cast Penelope Ann Miller in the recurring role of Mrs. Wright, the district attorney prosecuting Archie Andrews for murder. She’s described by the CW as “savvy and eloquent,” and “with a conviction in mind, she will weave together disparate moments of Archie’s young life to portray him as a dangerous, violent sociopath who is capable of committing a heinous crime.” “Riverdale” returns Oct. 10.

    • “Arrow”
The “Arrow” panel confirmed that the Longbow Hunters will be introduced in Season 7. According to EW, the Longbow Hunters are a legendary group of assassins Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) recruits to get back at Team Arrow. The three assassins are Red Dart (Holly Elissa), “a ruthless and precise killer”; Kodiak (Michael Jonsson) “a beast of a man with brute force”; and Silencer (Miranda Edwards), a master of stealth. Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), Derek Sampson (Cody Runnels), and Danny “Brick” Brickwell (Vinnie Jones) all returning this season as well. “Arrow” returns Monday, Oct. 15.

  • Fans React to Batwoman & Gotham City Joining Arrowverse in 2018 Crossover

The CW held its upfront presentation today, and teased the annual Arrowverse crossover event.

“Arrow” star Stephen Amell shared the big news himself:

“We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’ll be doing another crossover event this fall on the CW, and we’ll be introducing a new character. For the very first time appearing, we’ll be fighting alongside Batwoman, which is terrific. The crossover is going to make it to air in December. I need to leave right now and start filming it.”

The CW boss Mark Pedowitz confirmed that they’re “adding the city of Gotham into the Arrowverse,” describing the crossover as “another full-throttled, action-packed event.”

The DC Comics character of Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, was reimagined in New 52. Kate happens to be a Jewish lesbian, which has a lot of fans excited (or wary) for more on-screen representation.

This will be the first time we’re seeing Gotham in the Arrowverse, after its existence was teased a few times — including when Oliver Queen name-droped Bruce Wayne. This will also be the first time any screen has shown Batwoman, Pedowitz noted.

Fans have strong hopes and fears for The CW’s take on Batwoman:

The crossover will air in December, and we’ll be hearing a lot more about it — including casting — in the months to come.

Meanwhile, The CW just revealed its fall 2018-2019 schedule, moving “Supergirl” to Sundays and “Arrow” to Mondays.

  • The CW Fall 2018 Schedule Puts ‘Charmed’ Reboot & ‘Supergirl’ on Sundays

“Supergirl” is moving from Mondays to Sundays as the lead-in for the new “Charmed” reboot.

That’s the word from The CW, which just revealed its Fall 2018-2019 schedule.

“Arrow” is moving to Mondays, with new series “Legacies” — set in the same world as “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” — airing Thursdays.

Also, The CW confirmed that these will be the final seasons for “Jane the Virgin,” “iZombie,” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” It’s always sad to say goodbye, but better to know going into a season than having showrunners write cliffhanger endings in the hope of a pickup that never comes.

Holding for midseason are the new “Roswell” reboot and new series “In the Dark.”

Here’s the Fall lineup (via EW), plus details on the new “Charmed”:

    Sunday

    8:00-9:00 PM Supergirl (New Night)
    9:00-10:00 PM Charmed (New Series)

    Monday

8:00-9:00 PM DC’S Legends of Tomorrow
    9:00-10:00 PM Arrow (New Night)

    Tuesday

    8:00-9:00 PM The Flash
    9:00-10:00 PM Black Lightning

    Wednesday

    8:00-9:00 PM Riverdale
9:00-10:00 PM All American (New Series)

    Thursday

    8:00-9:00 PM Supernatural
    9:00-10:00 PM Legacies (New Series)

    Friday

    8:00-9:00 PM Dynasty
    9:00-10:00 PM Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

    Here’s more on “Charmed”:

    CHARMED:

“Stronger together.” That’s what Marisol tells her daughters, firebrand social justice warrior Melanie “Mel” Vera, and her sister, fun-loving Maggie, about their family. Mel is a graduate student in the women’s studies department her mother heads at Hilltowne University; Maggie is a freshman considering rushing a sorority (to Mel’s amused dismay) and going “on” again with her on-again off-again boyfriend Brian.

But then, a shocking tragedy shatters their world and threatens their sibling bond: Marisol dies in a horrifying accident. Or was it? Three months later, we find Mel unable to accept the official explanation of their mother’s death, while Maggie accuses her of being morbidly obsessed. And then, another huge shock shows up at their front door: they have an older sister, brilliant geneticist Macy, whom their mother kept a secret all these years!

Macy is new in town and doesn’t know a soul (except for Galvin, the cute fellow scientist who’s been showing her around). Macy is eager to connect with Mel and Maggie, but Mel can’t handle another shock, and shuts her out.

With the emotions of all three sisters running high, each of the girls suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities: Mel can freeze time, Maggie starts hearing others’ thoughts, and Macy has telekinetic powers. But don’t worry, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation…or so says Harry Greenwood (who as far as they know is the officious new chair of the women’s studies department), when he gathers the three sisters together to reveal they’re actually powerful witches, as was their mother. And he’s not really a professor, he’s their “Whitelighter,” a witch’s advisor and guide!

Not only that, but Mel was right: their mother’s death was no accident – she was murdered by unknown dark forces. It’s a lot to take in, but ultimately the sisters accept their new destiny as The Charmed Ones…and their new duty to protect humankind from the demons that walk among us…one of whom killed their mother. With the Power of Three, they are stronger together… even if they have no idea what they’re really up against.

Starring Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery, Madeleine Mantock, Rupert Evans, Ser’Darius Blaine, Charlie Gillespie, and Ellen Tamaki . Based on the original series, CHARMED is from CBS Television Studios in association with Propagate Content, with executive producers Jessica O’Toole (“Jane The Virgin”), Amy Rardin (“Jane The Virgin”), Jennie Snyder Urman (“Jane The Virgin”), Ben Silverman (“The Office”), Brad Silberling (“Jane The Virgin”) and Carter Covington (“Faking It”).

  • The CW Renews 10 Series Including ‘Riverdale,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Supernatural’

Looks like The CW was feeling generous this week: The network renewed 10 of its series for additional seasons.

The buzziest of the bunch is “Riverdale,” the modern-day twist on the “Archie” comic series, which will be back for season three in the fall. And there’s good news for some shows that were on the bubble, too: “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” also made the renewal cut, despite dismal ratings.

Both “Jane” (which will be back for season five) and “CXG” (which will be back for season four) are likely to end their runs after those episodes, since producers had previously discussed having those specific number of seasons in mind when planning out their shows’ respective story arcs. Plus, “JtV” star Gina Rodriguez already spilled the beans about her series’s impending end.

Not likely to end anytime soon, though? The CW’s lineup of DC superhero series, which are all returning for the 2018-2019 season. And the Winchester brothers are proving that “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t the only TV drama that can hang around for over a decade: “Supernatural” has been picked up for a 14th season.

The full list of renewed shows includes: “Arrow” (Season 7), “Black Lightning” (Season 2), “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (Season 4), “Dynasty” (Season 2), “Legends of Tomorrow” (Season 4), “The Flash” (Season 5), “Jane the Virgin” (Season 5), “Riverdale” (Season 3), “Supergirl” (Season 4), and “Supernatural” (Season 14 ).

The flurry of renewals comes as The CW amps up its original programming, expanding into Sunday nights. No word yet on the fate of the just-moved freshman series “Life Sentence,” though with so much time to fill, the network may yet wind up throwing that show another season, too. Stay tuned.

  • ‘Supergirl’ Fans Launch Petition to Protest ‘Absurd’ 2018 Schedule Change

“Supergirl” fans are not happy with The CW’s new on-off-on-off schedule.

The Arrowverse is doing some timeslot gymnastics in early 2018. “Supergirl” Season 3 will return on January 15, but after not quite a month it’ll give way to “Legends of Tomorrow” for nine episodes. That’s because “Black Lightning” is premiering, and it’s taking the former “Legends” spot on Tuesdays after “The Flash.”

Here’s the new winter 2018 schedule, via TVLine:

    • Monday, Jan. 15: “Supergirl” resumes Season 3
    • Tuesday, Jan. 16: “Black Lighting” premieres, in Legends time slot
    • Monday, Feb. 12: “Legends” resumes Season 3, in Supergirl’s time slot
    • Monday, April 9: “Legends” Season 3 finale
    • Monday, April 16: “Supergirl” re-resumes Season 3
    • Monday, June 18: “Supergirl” Season 3 finale

The schedule change has gotten a lot of reaction, with some fans wondering if “Supergirl” had to take a break because they lost their fired showrunner. Maybe. Maybe not. It has prompted a Change.org petition to The CW and president Mark Pedowitz, though, asking that they leave “Supergirl” where it is, and move “Legends” somewhere else:

“Supergirl Time slot change – The CW”

Today it was revealed that Legends of Tomorrow will replace Supergirl at its Monday timeslot from February 12th til April 16th. In response to this we the fans are calling for Supergirl to not be changed or Legends of Tomorrow to be moved to another night.

To have a 9 week break to let another show have its time is [a]bsurd and it will tarnish the shows viewer ratings as it will be off for over two months and a lot of people will wonder if the show has been cancelled or moved elsewhere.

This is a petition to try and fight for whats right.”

As of this moment, around 4,200 fans have signed the petition. “Supergirl” already changed networks from CBS to The CW, so it’s used to being shuffled around. Hopefully this latest change doesn’t bode ill for the future of the (pretty low-rated, these days) show.

One bit of good news, from TVLine, is that when “Supergirl” returns, Krys Marshall will join the cast in the recurring role of Julia Freeman. She’s described as a “20-something musician living near National City who holds clues to Reign’s true identity.”

  • Arrowverse Showrunner Andrew Kreisberg Officially Fired From The CW Shows

Never mind the “Crisis on Earth-X,” there’s an executive producer crisis to manage.

Andrew Kreisberg was a showrunner on “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “Arrow,” also executive producing “Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Vixen.” He also had an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, the studio that produces the shows. All of that is now gone. Kreisberg was officially fired, after 15 women and four men came forward with allegations of sexual harassment/misconduct by their boss.

2016 Summer TCA Tour - Day 16The studio shared a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter), outlining the plan forward from here:

“After a thorough investigation, Warner Bros. Television Group has terminated Andrew Kreisberg’s employment, effective immediately. Greg Berlanti will assume additional responsibilities on both The Flash, where he will work closely with executive producer/co-showrunner Todd Helbing, and Supergirl, where he will work closely with executive producers/co-showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller. We remain committed to providing a safe working environment for our employees and everyone involved in our productions.”

2016 Summer TCA Tour - Day 16Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions’ head of television Sarah Schechter also shared a joint statement:

“Warner Bros. Television Group recently concluded its investigation into the allegations against Andrew Kreisberg. We encouraged and supported this investigation, we believe and support the individuals who came forward, and we agree with the studio’s decision. Nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of all our colleagues — co-workers, crew and staff alike.”

According to THR, production wasn’t interrupted, and the top producers visited the Vancouver sites of the four live-action shows to talk to the casts, crews, and others about what happened.

After the allegations initially came out about Kreisberg, and the investigation was launched, The CW stars Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, and Emily Bett Rickards took to social media to support the people coming forward.

The CW just finished its four-way Supergirl/Arrow/Flash/Legends of Tomorrow crossover this past Monday and Tuesday.

  • ‘Supergirl’ & ‘Arrow’ Stars Speak Out After Boss Suspended Over Sexual Harassment Claims

Comic-Con International 2016 - 'Supergirl' Special Video Presentation And Q&A“Supergirl” stars Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh, and “Arrow” star Emily Bett Rickards are hoping for a change in the culture.

They posted to social media shortly after Variety released a report on allegations of inappropriate behavior by Arrowverse executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. According to Variety’s report, 15 women and four men came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate physical contact by Kreisberg over a period of years.

Here’s a piece of that report:

“According to sources who either witnessed this behavior or were subjected to it, Kreisberg is accused of frequently touching people without their permission, asking for massages from uncomfortable female staff members, and kissing women without asking. Almost every source cites a constant stream of sexualized comments about women’s appearances, their clothes, and their perceived desirability.”

One woman said, “The workplace feels unsafe,” and another woman added, “He scares people.” None of the sources — all unnamed — went to HR, “because it seems like nothing’s been enforced.” But as word of Variety’s report spread, the outlet said human resources began interviewing women on the producer’s staff.

Variety's A Night In The Writers' RoomKreisberg denied any inappropriate touching or massages, telling Variety:

“I have made comments on women’s appearances and clothes in my capacity as an executive producer, but they were not sexualized. Like many people, I have given someone a non-sexual hug or kiss on the cheek.”

Warner Bros. TV Group told Variety in a statement that Kreisberg was suspended as they conducted an internal investigation:

“We take all allegations of misconduct extremely seriously, and are committed to creating a safe working environment for our employees and everyone involved in our productions.”

Melissa Benoist plays Kara Danvers/Supergirl herself, and without referencing Kreisberg by name, she shared this post on the harassment culture:

Benoist’s co-star and on-screen sister Chyler Leigh also posted:

Emily Bett Rickards, who plays Felicity Smoak across “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Vixen,” and “Legends of Tomorrow,” also spoke up:

  • ‘Supergirl’ Stars & Fans React to Emotional Sanvers Split: ‘Everything Hurts’

“Supergirl” episode. And, as Leigh noted, since there wasn’t “absolute closure” between her character Alex Danvers and Floriana Lima‘s Maggie Sawyer, there’s hope for an eventual return.

For now, “Supergirl” fans are hurting from the Danvers/Sawyer “Sanvers” breakup in Season 3, Episode 5, “Damage.” The breakup happened because Floriana Lima decided to leave the show, but Leigh told TVLine you never know what will happen in the future.

“As of now, what we know is we got these five amazing episodes based on [Lima’s] availability. If she can come back, I know we would all love to have that happen. I don’t know what that would look like … but that’s not my job. My job is to do the best with what has been handed to me.”

Both Leigh and Lima took to social media after the episode, praising each other, episode director Kevin Smith, and the fans:

Fans also shared their own emotional reactions:

Deep breaths, fans, it’s not over. The door is still open for a return later on, for what that’s worth.

“Supergirl” Season 3 continues Mondays on The CW.
