The film follows George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd who loves his sheep and raises them only for their wool. Every night he reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand, never suspecting that not only can they understand but they argue for hours afterwards about whodunnit. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. The local cop Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun), on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life, so the sheep conclude they will have to solve it themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn’t as simple as it appears in books.

    Preview:

    • Warner Bros. has made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies touted were ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Dune: Part III’
    • The likes of Tom Cruise and James Gunn showed up to lobby exhibitors.

After a hugely successful 2026 in terms of both box office and awards, Warner Bros. arrives at CinemaCon with a bigger story looming over its head –– the future. With the Paramount merger inching closer, there will of course be questions about the new regime’s plans, even as the likes of David Ellison maintain that the studio’s output will be boosted.

    HZE9ZYwn82Uv0YNMTwx2g5

But the focus, of course, will be on the movies headed our way from the studio, including a couple of DC Studios offerings (‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’), Denis Villeneuve’s new ‘Dune’ entry and that rare beast, a non-‘Mission: Impossible’ job for Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘Digger’.

With Patton Oswalt as the host (who joked that he wanted to join the DC Universe), this is what was presented…

Before any of the big announcements, we got word from Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy that the studio is launching a new label called Warner Clockwork, whose first production is ‘Anora’ director Sean Baker‘s next project, ‘Te Amo!’.

A sizzle reel celebrating last year’s accomplishments was followed by an even more exciting one for 2027, including some big casting news dropped for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu kick off the 2026 portion of the show with their collaboration, ‘Digger’. Cruise heaped praise on his director, with the filmmaker explaining that he got the idea for the new movie nine years ago and started discussing it with the actor seven years ago. Cruise, according to him was the only choice.

The movie tells of most powerful man in the world as he embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

The first project to cover was ‘Clayface’, about the Batman antagonist, which Safran described as more focused on character than genre. He showed off the first footage from the movie.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock showed up to tout the witchy sequel, mentioning their shared appreciation for director Susanne Bier and how the production rebuilt the original movie’s house. What can we expect? “Midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof, and also have our past catching up with us,” according to Kidman. “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”

After some talk about how the characters are inspiring, the first teaser trailer was shown.

The big finish was, somewhat naturally, the new ‘Dune’, with director Denis Villeneuve taking the stage accompanied by Fremen warriors.  Villeneuve said he made the movie “1,000%” for the fans, and the audience was treated to the first seven minutes of the movie.

Accompanied by the likes of Zendaya, Momoa and notorious opera-disliker Timothée Chalamet, Villeneuve showed off a battle scene that promises some suitably epic action.

Described as a reboot that won’t retell a story from the game series, but will return to the franchise’s suspense/horror roots and be more faithful to the spirit of the early games. The film will attempt to capture “the moment that comes in every ‘Resident Evil’ game where you find yourself standing in the mouth of a dark passageway with one shot left in the gun, and you know something horrible is waiting for you in that darkness – that awful moment where you have to will yourself forward.” The film will “follow one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”

When talking about her first day on the ser of ‘Supergirl’, Milly Alcock confirmed that Superman will be in the film, something fans hoped for but did not know for certain.

Milly Alcock: It was with Superman. And I wasn’t in the suit, and I was speaking a different language. That day was really hard. It was like two degrees. That was a hard day. The whole scene was in Kryptonian.

    2) ‘Supergirl’ Shows Young Women It Is Okay To Be Flawed

James Gunn at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

Supergirl is not Superman, in that she is a very flawed individual. Both Milly Alcock and James Gunn agree that ‘Supergirl’ is about showing young women that this is perfectly okay.

Milly Alock: I think that what Supergirl represents for young women especially is that you can be flawed and that you can be openly, you don’t have to be perfect in order to come to some internal self-resolution. I think that we’re thrusted upon this narrative, especially women, that you have to be perfect in every aspect of your life. And I think that Kara is someone who so beautifully leans into her flaws. And I think that that’s really special.

James Gunn: Yeah, I agree with you. That’s really what spoke to me both in the book and on the script is that a lot of times for some reason our female superhero leads are just so much more perfect than our male. Tony Stark and Star-Lord are such messes. And yet that isn’t always the same thing for our female superhero leads and seeing somebody who was just so imperfect and such a mess but just really a beautiful soul.

    3) Craig Gillespie Explains That The Fight Sequence Camera Work Changes A Lot During ‘Supergirl’

Director Craig Gillespie on the set of 'Dumb Money.' Photo: Claire Folger. © 2023 CTMG, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

As discussed earlier, Kara Zor-El is a bit of a mess, and because of that, depending on what mood she is in and where they are in the story, the fight sequence camera work in ‘Supergirl’ changes.

Craig Gillespie: There was a lot going on, but it was really exciting in a way because in each case, it was always a little different. It’s like whether she had her full power, whether she had no power if she’s on a red planet, whether she has the fully generated power, and also emotionally where she is in the story dictated a lot of how these fight sequences go. So if she’s in a very angry place, it’s going to be a much more phonetically camera, like messy, kind of aggressive camera work. If she’s feeling in the zone, so to speak, the camera work gets more fluid. So trying to figure out where we are in the story and how that reinforces her emotionally with the fight sequences was really fun.

    4) The Majority Of ‘Supergirl’ Takes Place In Space

Milly Alcock on the set of 'Supergirl'. Photo: James Gunn's Instagram account.
Milly Alcock on the set of ‘Supergirl’. Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram account.

Superman‘ and ‘Supergirl’ are very different films. They are both a very different tone, and ‘Supergirl’ takes place almost entirely in space, Craig Gillespie explains.

Craig Gillespie: They are so different in tone. And to be able to really lean into it and embrace it, and plus, are we allowed to say this? It’s like the whole movie takes place in outer space. So it’s a very different world to start with. We had a completely blank slate.

James Gunn: The outer space thing’s a big part of it. Because it is a space fantasy.

    5) Krypto Is A Big Part Of ‘Supergirl’… And He Is Still Not A Good Boy

As seen in the teaser trailer, Krypto is going to be a big part of ‘Supergirl’, and to no one’s surprise, he is still not a good dog.

James Gunn: I think you’ll see pretty quickly he’s returning. I don’t think he knows what good is. I think he just exists in his own head space. He’s not a good dog. He’s a terrible dog.  He continues to be a terrible dog. The difference is Kara loves him as a terrible dog. She loves him. Whereas he gets on Clark’s nerves, you know? Maybe he’ll get better.

As the latest incarnation the DC movie universe takes flight thanks to DC Studios co-chief (and writer/director James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, another big name from the comic company’s ranks is taking a step forward on her own new solo outing.

Ana Nogueira, who wrote next year’s ‘Supergirl’, has now, via The Wrap, been hired to script a Wonder Woman movie.

The news follows Gunn’s own sentiments on the matter, having dropped word that a Wonder Woman script is in the works.

Nogueira is becoming a popular writer for the DC team. As mentioned, she’s already written ‘Supergirl’, which Craig Gillespie has directed with Milly Alcock starring as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin.

She’s also been working on a live-action take on the ‘Teen Titans’ characters, though development on that one is under wraps for now.

What else is happening with Wonder Woman?

Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in 'Wonder Woman 1984.'
Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’

The new movie would be a fresh start for the character, who was played on the big screen by Gal Gadot in 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League’, 2020’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and in a cameo in 2023’s ‘The Flash.’

When Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as taking over running Warner Bros.’ DC arm (which would go on to be named DC Studios), there was much speculation about whether any of the actors from the Zack Snyder era, including Gadot and ‘Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill, would stay in their roles.

Despite comments from Gadot that she and Patty Jenkins (who had co-written and directed the previous two standalone Wonder Woman outings) were developing a third movie for the character, the DC Studios duo appeared to be steering more towards a complete refresh of the comic book universe.

Gunn and Safran’s initial outline showed they had other ideas for Diana. When they unveiled their first plans around another Wonder Woman project, ‘Paradise Lost.’

It’s a TV series set on Themyscira, the birthplace of Princess Diana, and described as ‘Game Of Thrones’ with the Amazons. It’s set before Diana is born.

Here’s what Gunn said about the show at the time:

“It’s an origin story of how this society of women came about. What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s really exciting.”

And it would seem that, as with Superman, when and if Wonder Woman does return to big screens, she’ll be played by someone new.

What’s the future for DC Studios?

As mentioned above, Gunn and Safran already have plans in place for an interconnected series of movies and TV series, with ‘Supergirl’ due on June 26th next year, followed by ‘Clayface’ in September the same year and HBO Max series ‘Lanterns’ in production now.

DC Studios co-CEO has a way with teasing upcoming projects without shoving them down viewers’ throats, which is why it came as no surprise to most when Kal-El’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, made a brief appearance at the end of ‘Superman‘. Her solo film will release in theaters in 2026, making this the perfect way to introduce her and allow fans to get to know the DCU version of her, as well as the (unhealthy) relationship that she has with Krypto.

Milly Alcock plays Supergirl, who stops by the Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog, Krypto, after leaving him with her cousin Kal-El (David Corenswet) so she can go out partying – at least that is what she appears to have been doing. Anyone who has read the graphic novel that the 2026 film is based on, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, already knows this version of Kara.

Taking into consideration the events of the graphic novel’s storyline, ‘Supergirl‘ could take place during ‘Superman’. However, because of Krypto’s important role in the plot, at least part of it will likely take place after it.

Kara showing up drunk and disorderly at the end of ‘Superman’ has stirred up quite a conversation among audiences. For those who have not read ‘Woman of Tomorrow’, I can certainly see why this would take people by surprise. This version of her is much darker than others. She is not the polar opposite of the CW version, played by Melissa Benoist, but she is not very similar to her either.

The graphic novel opens with Kara drunk at a bar on a red sun planet, something that Kal-El claims is one of her favorite past times when she returns for Krypto. She is a mess, going so far as to cuss at Superman while thanking him for watching her dog. This easily comes as a shock for those that are not familiar with her darker side, but for the fans of this particular comic book storyline, seeing her in this state is exciting.

It means that DC Studios is not going to shy away from going there, which is necessary to tell the story correctly. Supergirl has not had an easy life, and letting viewers in on her past trauma, and the mental state this has left her in, is the perfect way to explore the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ story. The themes are going to be heavy, and it is potentially a tough pill to swallow for those who prefer a lighter version of the character, but DC needs to takes risks right now. Thankfully, it seems like they are willing to do it.

Knowing how things play out in the graphic novel is a bit of a cheat, but because of this, there is a good chance these two films can overlap. When we first meet Kara in ‘Superman’ she is drunk, having spent some time on a red sun planet partying. Because of her Kryptonian powers, this is something she cannot do on a planet with a yellow sun. Kal-El explains in the film, but essentially the rays of the sun will heal her so quickly that the alcohol is never able to take effect.

There is a decent chance that ‘Supergirl’ will start before she makes her way to Earth to pick up Krypto. It will take the time to explore this side of Kara, including her reasoning for partying so hard. We will see that dark part of her, learning just enough about it before she goes and collects Krypto.

After she leaves Earth, things are sure to get even rougher for her, as she looks deep inside herself and is forced to confront her childhood trauma. If it sticks closely to the graphic novel, there will be flashbacks as well, letting viewers in on her bringing up and what that has done to her.

Krypto’s Comic Book Storyline Is The Main Hint That ‘Supergirl’ Might Take Place After ‘Superman’

(L to R) David Corenswet and Krypto in 'Superman.' Photo: James Gunn's Instagram account.
(L to R) David Corenswet and Krypto in ‘Superman.’ Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram account.

Without giving too much away, Krypto is a major catalyst for the events of the graphic novel that ‘Supergirl’ is going to be based on. It is because of this, that the odds of Kara’s movie taking place entirely during the events of ‘Superman’ start to dwindle. Yes, there could certainly be some overlap, but Krypto is too important to the story being told to not be a part of her movie at all.

‘Superman’ has now established that Krypto is Kara’s dog, a key factor in the graphic novel. He is a major part of this darker Supergirl story and will likely be included in the film. Not only has James Gunn already stated that this film is a darker take on the character, the version of her that was seen in ‘Superman’ seems to be the final bit of proof.

Whether ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Superman’ do indeed overlap or not, one thing is for sure, DC Studios is going all in on this darker side of Kara. There is still plenty of time to pick up the graphic novel and check it out before ‘Supergirl”s 2026 release – if you don’t mind potential spoilers that is.

Alcock will reportedly first show up in another DC movie (the main speculation has been on James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, though the director has shot that down online, even if it seems unlikely there will be another release from Warner Bros./DC between ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’)

She’ll then appear in her own movie, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new movie/TV universe.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

This is what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Who will Schoenaerts play in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’?

Matthias Schoenaerts in 'The Regime.' Photograph by Miya Mizuno/HBO.

Assuming the movie maintains the comic’s storyline, Schoenaerts will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father. She then draws Supergirl into the conflict.

And, more controversially, he also kills Supergirl’s dog, leading her to go all ‘John Wick.’

While the actor is more known for his indie movie and European work (including the likes of ‘Rust and Bone,’ ‘The Danish Girl’ and Luca Guadagnino’s ‘A Bigger Splash’), Schoenaerts is not a stranger to comic book-based movies, having appeared in Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’ (he’s back for the sequel, which is still awaiting a release slot.)

The cameras will be rolling this coming January in the UK.

Ana Nogueira has been adapting the comic book with some input from Tom King. DC Studios bosses Gunn and Peter Safran are producing, and DC executive vice president Chantal Nong is an executive producer.

Things are moving –– or perhaps, given the main character, flying –– ahead for the ‘Supergirl’ movie. At least, if Deadline’s report ends up panning out.

Craig Gillespie, the director behind such movies as ‘I, Tonya’, ‘Cruella’ and, most recently, ‘Dumb Money’, is now in talks to direct the new take on Kara Zor-El for DC Studios.

What is the plan for the Supergirl movie?

While nothing has been formally confirmed, it appears that the Supergirl character (with Milly Alcock of ‘House of the Dragon’ in the part, will first crop up in a cameo in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’.

She’ll then appear in her own movie, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new movie/TV universe.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run.

It would seem that the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ subtitle has dropped off, but that may return.

When will ‘Supergirl’ be in theaters?

Warner Bros. has yet to lock down a release date for the movie; which is not a bad idea since zero footage exists for it yet. But the plan for production is for ‘Supergirl’ to kick off shooting later this year once Gunn has completed work on ‘Superman’ and the studio’s focus can switch to the other ‘Super’-character.

Alcock got the role after an audition and a screen test, and the other two main contenders were Emilia Jones (who starred in Oscar winner ‘CODA’ and appeared in last year’s ‘Cat People’), and Meg Donnelly, known for the DisneyZombies’ movies.

Donnelly also had some experience with Supergirl, as she has voiced the role in several animated DC outings.

  • Andie MacDowell and Cast Talk Hallmark Series ‘The Way Home’

    eVQ1eTI8

Premiering January 15th on the Hallmark Channel is the new original series ‘The Way Home,’ which was created by Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke and Marly Reed.

The series stars Chyler Leigh (‘Supergirl’) as Kat Landry, Sadie Laflamme-Snow (‘Love Triangle Nightmare’) as her 15-year-old daughter Alice, and Andie MacDowell (‘Groundhog Day’) as Kat’s estranged mother Del. More than 20 years prior, a life-changing event created a chasm in their family that time has yet to repair.

Kat and Del still aren’t on speaking terms, Alice has never met her grandmother and is unaware of the reasons for their fractured family. When the three generations come together under one roof for the first time in more than two decades, a surprising discovery unexpectedly sets the trio on a path toward healing and helps them find their way back to each other.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh and Sadie Laflamme-Snow about their work on ‘The Way Home,’ their first reaction to the screenplays, and the relationship between their characters.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh and Sadie Laflamme-Snow about ‘The Way Home.’

Moviefone: To begin with, Andie, what was your first reaction when you read the screenplay for the pilot?

Andie MacDowell: I was just blown away by the script. It just gave me chill bumps. I love the fact that it took place on this farm. That was really appealing to me that I had bees. I was like, “Oh, I love that.” Then she has these young people that come. I love that, being a mature person but still interacting with younger people.

But then when my daughter comes home, and we have all this trouble between us, she brings my granddaughter that I’ve not had the opportunity to be with. I warn her about this pond, and she goes into the pond and then ends up going back in time and seeing me in 1999 and meeting her mother at 15. That’s when it blew my mind open and it continues to happen over the season. We couldn’t wait to get the next script and were so surprised by what was happening. It’s a real trip. It’s a great trip. It’s very different for Hallmark, though. But they still have great romance and some beautiful men.

MF: Chyler, when you are creating a new character for a series like this, are you given the scripts for the entire season, or do you have to take it episode by episode?

Chyler Leigh: That’s very interesting because I guess that’s kind of life anyway. But for us, the way that we were filming, because we did 10 episodes, we’d get 2 episodes at a time. So, it was like we did episodes 1 and 2 together, then 3, 4, 5, and 6. So, we had a little bit of insight as to where we were going. Then of course our showrunners and writers, they gave us bits and pieces of what to look forward to. But it was just as much a mystery and surprise to us when we got to see this journey as our characters kind of discovering where they are in their lives. We also see the consequences of Alice’s time-traveling and how that can affect your current time.

(L to R) Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh star in Hallmark Channel’s ‘The Way Home.’

MF: Sadie, can you talk about the time-traveling elements of the series?

Sadie Laflamme-Snow: It’s been really exciting. It’s a great challenge as an actor too, just to be holding that kind of information in two different timelines. It almost felt like you’re the liaison between what felt at times like two different casts completely. Because the worlds are very separated in a lot of ways. The opportunity for Alice to meet her mom when her mom is a teenager and they become best friends. But in the present day, we’re struggling so much to communicate and to connect. So, in terms of how the past was informing the present, it was just an amazing challenge and just so much fun. I think it’s going to be really thrilling for the audience because they’re in on it with Alice.

MF: Finally, Chyler, can you talk about where Kat is in her life when the series begins and why she decides to move back in with her mom when they haven’t spoken in years?

CL: When we pick up where Kat is, she’s just been laid off from her job. She’s in the midst of separating from her husband and she’s kind of just come to this crossroads. She doesn’t know what she’s doing, where she’s going, and she’s struggling in the midst of the separation, with her daughter trying to figure out how to communicate and they’re just butting heads all the time. So, she ends up after 20 years of not speaking to her mother, in the wake of a really big tragedy in our family, she gets this mysterious letter that Del is saying, “Come home.”

It’s sort of like, this an opportunity to heal? Is this an opportunity to get the apologies that she feels she deserves and kind of work through the guilt that she feels? She’s bringing her daughter for the first time ever to meet her grandmother. So, with all of that, we pick up where everybody is in their own struggles and figure out how they can either work together or how being in the past from Alice’s perspective, can heal where they are now and move forward.
