  • Movie Review: ’80 for Brady’

Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Sally Field in '80 For Brady' from Paramount Pictures.

Opening in theaters on February 3rd is the new sports comedy ’80 for Brady’ from director Kyle Marvin, which stars Academy Award winners Jane Fonda, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno, as well as Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Lily Tomlin.

The film is loosely based on the true story of a quartet of octogenarians from Massachusetts who become obsessed with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. In the film (not in real life), the ladies decide to take a road trip to Super Bowl LI to finally see Brady play in person, which results in an unforgettable weekend for the four lifelong friends.

The result is a fun but predictable movie that is basically just a commercial for the NFL and Tom Brady’s legacy. However, the weak script, familiar jokes and corny dialogue is transcended by the four fabulous lead characters and the wonderful performances from the legendary actress playing them.

Full disclosure: I’m from Massachusetts. My mother still lives there, she is over 80, and is a diehard Patriots fan. So, it goes without saying that I was already predisposed to like this movie since all four of the main characters, in one way or another, remind me of my mom. While I definitely had some issues with the script and the ridiculousness of the third act, the film is still very enjoyable, mostly because of the lead actresses.

Jane Fonda plays Trish, Sally Field plays Betty, Lily Tomlin plays Lou, and Rita Moreno plays Maura in '80 For Brady' from Paramount Pictures.
(L to R) Jane Fonda plays Trish, Sally Field plays Betty, Lily Tomlin plays Lou, and Rita Moreno plays Maura in ’80 For Brady’ from Paramount Pictures.

Of the four main actresses, Lily Tomlin is really the lead, playing Lou, the catalyst for the friends becoming such Brady fans. Tomlin, a legendary comedian in her own right, handles the comedy well, as you would expect, but is really impressive in her dramatic scenes, in particular one with Brady himself.

In fact, all four actress were cast extremely well and play relatable characters. Jane Fonda plays Trish, an author of Rob Gronkowski fan-fiction who is desperately trying to hold on to her youth and beauty. Sally Field plays Betty, a book smart former professor, who still loves her husband (Bob Balaban) but is looking for a little excitement in her life. Finally there is Maura, played by Rita Moreno. She is the oldest of the friends, a widow who misses her late husband, and a bit of a hustler living in a retirement home.

In a movie like this, you could easily see one or two of the actresses getting more screentime than the others, but luckily that is not the case. Each actress has more than a few moments to shine on their own, and all of their characters are fleshed out extremely well. Fonda and Tomlin have worked together before in ‘Nine to Five’ and the Netflix series ‘Grace and Frankie,’ and as you expect, have great chemistry together. But I was also impressed with how much chemistry they both had with Field and Moreno. You really get the feeling that these four women have been friends for a long time.

While the characters are well-defined and their backstories well fleshed out, it’s the familiar attempts at humor and ridiculous third act plot points that hurt the film in my opinion. For example, the ladies attend a Super Bowl party where they are given Gummy Bears, which of course they don’t know are laced with THC. This leads to the characters being high, and getting into silly situations that are extremely predictable, like Maura wondering into a celebrity Poker game.

Sally Field as Betty and Lily Tomlin as Lou in '80 For Brady' from Paramount Pictures.
(L to R) Sally Field as Betty and Lily Tomlin as Lou in ’80 For Brady’ from Paramount Pictures.

Another predictable plot point is when the characters, of course, lose their Super Bowl tickets the day before the game. In fact, this is so predictable that you want to yell at the screen because you can actually see them losing the tickets long before the characters realize it, telegraphing for the audience what the next conflict will be.

Which brings me to my biggest issue with the film, which is that once they get to the Super Bowl, it’s all fantasy. What I mean by that is almost nothing that happens at the Super Bowl could happen in real life. No one can get into a Super Bowl without tickets, the security is just too much, so the idea that these four octogenarians could ultimately find their way in without tickets is just laughable.

But the most ridiculous, over-the-top moment of the film comes during the halftime of Super Bowl LI. Football fans will remember that the Patriots were losing to the Atlanta Falcons 21-3 at halftime, and mounted an unforgettable comeback that took them into overtime eventually winning 34-28. Without giving too much away, the movie would have you believe that it was Lou that inspired Tom Brady’s legendary comeback.

Now, while that is a nice idea for the movie, this is a film supposedly set in reality. It doesn’t take place in the Multiverse as far as I know, it takes place in our world where Tom Brady and the NFL really exists. So, the idea that four 80-year-old women could get access to the star quarterback during halftime was so far beyond any reality I could comprehend, that it took me completely out of the movie.

Lily Tomlin plays Lou with Producer Tom Brady in '80 For Brady' from Paramount Pictures.
(L to R) Lily Tomlin plays Lou with Producer Tom Brady in ’80 For Brady’ from Paramount Pictures.

For Brady fans wondering if he just has a cameo in the film, I’m happy to say no, his role is surprisingly larger than that. While he is definitely in a supporting role, he pops up throughout the film, both as himself, and also as himself in Lou’s imagination. Brady gives a strong performance, even if he is just playing himself, and is surprisingly good in his emotional scenes with Tomlin. But it is no surprise to me why Brady would want to make this movie, where he also serves as a producer, because the entire film is one giant ego stroke for the GOAT.

The NFL, which famously doesn’t allow its brand to appear in just any movie, ask Oliver Stone about ‘Any Given Sunday,’ clearly was on board with this production. In fact, a large part of the second act takes place at the NFL Super Bowl Experience, and at times seems more like a commercial for the NFL than a narrative movie. The NFL also (presumably) allowed the film to use footage from Super Bowl LI to recreate the game, which works surprisingly well and is still engaging, even though the audience already knows the outcome.

In addition to Patriots like Brady, Gronkowski, Danny Amendola, and Julian Edelman, the movie also features cameos and supporting performances from Guy Fieri, Billy Porter, Patton Oswalt, Glynn Turman, and Harry Hamlin, as well as Sara Gilbert as Lou’s daughter.

In the end, ’80 for Brady’ is a fun movie that NFL and Patriots fans will enjoy, and my mom and her friends will love! While the film at times loses any sense of reality and slips into pure fantasy, and has more than its share of script issues and NFL propaganda, it’s funny and works thanks to the talent of Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sally Field and Rita Moreno.

The Super Bowl took place this Sunday, and whether you were rooting for the Rams or backing the Bengals, we hope you got the outcome you were hoping for. Go sports!

But what if you were more concerned with the trailers, TV spots and ads that traditionally look to exploit the massive viewing audience that the big event attracts? We’ve got you covered.

In one handy, convenient place, we’ve rounded up all the exciting footage that wasn’t on the field. Even if, as has been the tradition of late, several of these trailers and spots made their way online long before kick-off.

    TV Trailers

    MOON KNIGHT

    v73KObXZ

While the superstar of the Marvel trailers from this year’s game was a certain magician’s multiverse madness, the MCU’s Disney+ TV arm still had something to show, as Oscar Isaac and ‘Moon Knight’ brought new footage from the show.

Isaac plays Steven Grant, an unassuming fellow working in the British museum, who discovers the reason he’s been experiencing such vivid dreams of late – he’s just one identity filling his head, which is primarily owned by that of Marc Spector, who becomes the Egyptian mythology-powered vigilante Moon Knight, whose brand of justice tends to be more violent than some of the other Marvel heroes.

It’ll be fascinating to see how Moon Knight is merged with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, though at this point, Team Marvel has proved a dab hand at juggling a wide range of different characters.

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

    AG2YHFQB
Amazon has spent so much money on the rights to additional stories from JRR Tolkien’s canon (and on making the TV show) that we began to wonder whether the trailer would just be a 10-second shot of a ring.

But no, this is an all-action look at the series, which has cost nearly half a billion dollars to acquire and make so far. There’s no doubting the ambition on display, as the clock turns back to a time before Frodo and co. (and even Bilbo) from Peter Jackson’s movies when Middle-earth was under threat from dark forces and different races had to come together to save their various homelands. Yes, it happens a lot in Middle-earth.

The likes of Morfydd Clark (playing the younger version of Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel), Peter Mullan and Benjamin Walker are in the cast here, and the show will be on TV screens starting September 2nd.

Jordan Peele, who has established himself as a master of horror (and an Oscar winner) with ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’ is back on the terror beat with his latest. In this case, Daniel Kaluuya (who starred in ‘Get Out’), Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun lead the cast for the movie, which is still wrapped in some layers of mystery, even after this initial trailer.

We do at least know that Palmer plays a woman who works tangentially for the movie industry, wrangling horses in a business that has been passed down through her family. All seems to be going well until the power at a ranch mysteriously goes out and something horrible appears in the clouds.

What’s exactly going on? Is it aliens? Ghosts? Alien ghosts? We’ll find out when the movie arrives July 22nd.

    SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2

    nxC8yBrV

Released a couple of days before the game, the new spot for the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ sequel focuses a lot on Knuckles, the new threat for our hero, who boasts the vocal talents of Idris Elba. It’s a blend of footage we’ve seen in the first trailer and some new action, plus the likes of human co-stars Jim Carrey and James Marsden.

    AMBULANCE

A slightly disappointing spot for Michael Bay’s new film, mostly because there’s little new following the main trailer, which was a while ago. Still, get ready for glimpses of Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul Mateen II as brothers who rob a bank but then need to hijack the titular vehicle, sparking a chase across LA.

    THE LOST CITY

Who is ready for Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum to go exploring jungle climes and far-flung temples? Plenty of us, it appears. The action-comedy, which also features Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt, looks like it could be a lot of fun.

    JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION

While a shorter version played during the game’s ad space, the first full trailer for the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry arrived days before kick-off, bringing together two generations of ‘Jurassic’ casts and unleashing lots of the requisite dino action. Let’s just say it looks suitably massive.

    THE ADAM PROJECT / NETFLIX

    TeDy1M3H
Like Universal and others, Netflix released its Super Bowl effort in advance, putting out a long clip essentially promoting the streaming service’s 2022 output which is, it must be said, laden with star names and anticipated movies.

Knives Out 2’ is among the biggest, but the trailer also offered another look at Ryan Reynolds’ time-travelling action-adventure ‘The Adam Project’.

Mike Myers brings back his scheming supervillain Dr. Evil, who realizes he must save the world from itself to control it. Cue electric cars! The likes of Seth Green, Rob Lowe and Mindy Sterling reprise their roles from the ‘Austin Powers’ movies for a spot that mostly makes us wish A) Verne Troyer was still around to be Mini-Me and B) that they’d make another movie.

    THE CABLE GUY / VERIZON

A double dose of Jim Carrey this year, here returning to a role he hasn’t played since Ben Stiller’s 1996 crackpot comedy. That might have flopped, but it’s still fun to see Carrey doing his thing as the crazed cable tech, here confused by how the world has moved on to wireless internet, in this case from Verizon. He’s still got it, that Carrey.

  • Fox Will Air Fewer but Longer Commercials During Super Bowl LIV

Fox Will Air Fewer but Longer Commercials During Super Bowl LIV

    NFL

Super Bowl ads have become as highly anticipated as the game itself, but in 2020, there will be fewer of them — though they will be longer.

The NFL and Fox have agreed to cut back on the number of commercial breaks, with each quarter now featuring four instead of five.

Those breaks will be longer, however, running two and a half minutes instead of just two. The net number of ads should remain the same.

This is the first significant change to the format of the Super Bowl broadcast for three decades. The NFL has been testing the fewer-but-longer breaks during regular post-season games.

“For several years now, we have been working with our broadcast partners to make changes to our game broadcasts that are intended to improve the viewing experience,” NFL VP/Broadcasting Cathy Yancy said. “We’ve seen positive results from these efforts.”

Super Bowl ads represent big, big money. CBS, which aired February’s game, took in $382 million in revenue, according to an estimate by Kantar Media.

  • Here’s an Extended Version of That ‘Game of Thrones’ / Bud Light Crossover Super Bowl Ad

Here’s an Extended Version of That ‘Game of Thrones’ / Bud Light Crossover Super Bowl Ad

    Game of Thrones dragon
    HBO

HBO did not run a Super Bowl ad for the upcoming final season of “Game of Thrones,” but the fantasy epic made a surprise cameo in a Bud Light commercial.

Bud Light has been running a medieval-themed campaign, called “Dilly Dilly,” for some time now. This particular ad featured The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) once again destroying an opponent — thought not in as gruesome fashion as he once did to the Viper. But the big jaw-dropper was when a dragon appeared in the sky to blast the entire jousting tournament with flames.

Bud Light released an extended version of the Super Bowl ad:

The Wall Street Journal has the inside scoop on how the crossover came about, calling it ““biggest and boldest marketing tie-ins the AT&T Inc.-owned cable network has ever orchestrated.”

Not only did the ad feature a “Game of Thrones” actor and the special-effects dragon, part of it was directed by David Nutter, a “GOT” veteran. And the extended version features a brief snippet of the song “Rains of Castamere,” the infamous tune played at the Red Wedding.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 premieres April 14.

  • Matthew McConaughey Honored Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles in an Awesome Way

Everything really is bigger in Texas — including grand gestures.

Matthew McConaughey wanted to celebrate fellow Texan Nick Foles after his Feb. 4 Super Bowl victory, so the Oscar winner decided to do it in style. He took out a full-page ad honoring Foles in his hometown newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman. McConaughey wrote:

    From one local to another,

    Congratulations, Nick Foles.

    just keep livin,

    Mathew McConaughey

The ad came after an exciting Super Bowl that pitted backup quarterback Foles against seasoned vet Tom Brady, a man whose spot in the Hall of Fame is basically pending his retirement. Foles had stepped in to replace the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, after he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 14. In Wentz’s absence, Foles led the team to Super Bowl LII, where he threw for 373 years, including three touchdowns. He even recorded a touchdown reception.

The newest Super Bowl MVP was happy to receive McConaughey’s congratulations. Foles replied to a tweet with a photo of the ad on Feb. 12, writing, “This is awesome. Appreciate the support, @McConaughey!

What a gesture. To quote “Friday Night Lights,” Texas forever.

  • The ‘Always Sunny’ Cast Was at the Super Bowl to Cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles

The Super Bowl is always a star-studded event, with celebrity football fans rubbing elbows with average NFL aficionados to cheer on the sport’s best teams. But this year, the game was even more meaningful to a select famous trio with some pretty strong ties to the ultimate champion.

Several members of the main cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — the long-running FXX comedy about a gang of morally bankrupt people who run a failing Irish pub in the City of Brotherly Love — were there in Minneapolis, Minnesota to watch the Philadelphia Eagles triumph over the New England Patriots on Sunday night. Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito flew out together on a private jet to witness the historic win (the Eagles’ first), and the actors couldn’t contain their excitement.

McElhenney — who is actually a Philadelphia native, and a lifelong Eagles fan — tweeted throughout the days leading up to the big night, sharing snaps from the jet he and Olson (who are married in real life) and DeVito shared, the coincidental weather report, and the view from their seats in the stadium. McElhenney and Olson even got to schmooze with Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf, and McElhenney was clearly overjoyed as the clock winded down and the crowd realized that Philly had indeed claimed victory.

We have to say that the real winner, though, was whatever genius decided to blast the “Always Sunny” theme song inside the stadium following the game.

Now that was some inspired play calling.

  • Jennifer Lawrence Took Over a Plane Loudspeaker to Lead an Eagles Chant

Jennifer Lawrence may sometimes have a hard time interacting with fans, but that wasn’t the case this weekend: The Oscar-winning actress made the bold move to commandeer a loudspeaker on a plane, in an effort to show some love to the Philadelphia Eagles.

People reports that Lawrence was on a flight from New Orleans to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon — just before the Eagles triumphed in Super Bowl XLII — when she was moved to take the mic and show her devotion to Philly’s NFL team. Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar for 2012’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” which featured an Eagles-obsessed family led by Bradley Cooper.

In a video captured by a fellow passenger, Lawrence can be seen encouraging the rest of the flight to join her in the team’s signature fight song, “Fly, Eagles, Fly.”

“Everybody, this is not the pilot speaking. This is Jennifer Lawrence,” the actress said over the loudspeaker. “It’s February 4, Super Bowl Sunday, and we all know what that means. Can I please get a ‘Fly, Eagles, fly’? Fly, Eagles, fly! Fly, Eagles, fly!”

Lawrence also made a reference to “Bridesmaids,” quoting Kristen Wiig’s character (“There’s a colonial woman on the plane, she’s wearing traditional….”), who also commandeered a loudspeaker in that flick — and was also eventually shushed by a flight attendant.

While it doesn’t appear that too many of Lawrence’s fellow flyers were moved to root for Philly (maybe they were angry Patriots fans?), one passenger who spoke to People said the silly stunt was overall well-received.

“It was just like a fun, spontaneous chant by Jennifer Lawrence that we definitely appreciated,” the passenger told People. “I think everyone just went along with it, since flights are so boring.”

  • Watch Chris Pratt Get Super Serious About Michelob Ultra in Super Bowl Commercial

Premiere Of Neon's 'Ingrid Goes West' - ArrivalsChris Pratt takes every role seriously — very seriously.

The “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” star headlines Michelob Ultra’s Super Bowl ad. In it, he lands the commercial gig and starts preparing. He lifts weights at the gym, goes Method by installing a bar in his house, muses on his character’s back story, and drinks a lot of the beer. Hey, it’s all part of being the best Chris in Hollywood.

But when he shows up to shoot the ad, Pratt gets a big pint of reality.

But despite seemingly throwing back a bunch of beers in the add, there’s no sign of a beer gut on the actor. Pratt shows off a majorly buff body, appearing topless in several shots. His cut physique will also be on display in two big movies this summer, “Avengers: Infinity War” on May 4 and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” on June 22.

  • Tiffany Haddish Loves a Local Groupon in Super Bowl Commercial

Netflix Presents Russell Simmons' 'Def Comedy Jam 25' Special Event - ArrivalsTiffany Haddish knows a good deal when she sees one.

The breakout star of “Girls Trip” has been hilarious this past in late night appearances, awards show speeches, and even reading the Oscar nominations — which snubbed her, but whatever, she can still make a list of names sound funny.

Haddish is now the spokesperson for Groupon and stars in the company’s Super Bowl commercial, which will air during the fourth quarter of the game on Feb. 4. The spot reportedly cost more than $5 million.

Haddish landed the gig thanks to a memorable story she told Jimmy Kimmel while promoting “Girls Trip.” It involved taking co-star Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith on a swamp tour, courtesy of Groupon. Which the Smiths apparently knew nothing about!

If you haven’t seen it, WATCH IT NOW. And even if you have, it’s too funny not to rewatch:

And when you’re done wiping your tears of laughter from that video, watch Haddish talk about Nazis on “Drunk History”:

  • Justin Timberlake May Get Nipplegate Redemption With Super Bowl LII Halftime Show

EIF Presents: XQ Super School Live at the Barker Hangar - InsideThe NFL may finally have forgiven Justin Timberlake for his role in Nipplegate.

It was the wardrobe malfunction seen ’round the world: In February 2004, Timberlake and fellow pop star Janet Jackson took the stage together for the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, and in front of 140 million viewers, he exposed her breast when he tore away part of her costume. Although he claimed it was an accident, it didn’t exactly endear Timberlake to the NFL. The league faced backlash after the incident, both from the public and the FCC.

Now, almost 14 years later, the NFL seems to be ready to give the Grammy winner a second chance. Timberlake is a front-runner to perform during Super Bowl LII, according to Variety. While nothing is confirmed, the publication’s sources indicate that he is in contention and the timing would be ideal for promoting his next album. He’ll reportedly drop the album in early 2018, while Super Bowl LII is set for Feb. 3.

Assuming Timberlake lands the gig, he’ll likely have to be extremely careful with his second chance. Although the halftime show’s audience hasn’t been as big in recent years as it was in 2004, we wouldn’t expect the NFL to look to kindly on any other non-family-friendly incidents.
