  • ‘Shrek 5’ Is Happening and It’ll Be a ‘Big Reinvention’

While talking about his new movie, “The Boss Baby,” screenwriter Michael McCullers told THR that a new “Shrek” movie is in the wings.

‘Shrek 5’ is being developed. I finished that script, which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. Reinvention was sort of called for. There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.

Six months ago, Eddie Murphy talked to CinemaBlend about returning to the series, indicating he’s on board: “They took a nice long break. The next Shrek’ … I think Jeffrey [Katzenberg, producer] told me 2019? 2019 or 2020, it will be ready. But they’ve got a good script, they wrote a nice good script.”

He also told Collider why we’ll keep seeing more movies about the big green guy. Money! “Anything that’s been as successful as ‘Shrek,’ anything that people really like, they’re always going to make those movies. They don’t stop making those types of movies until the audience says ‘no more!’ If it’s been successful you’ll see another ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Shrek’ is one of those movies.”

The last film, “Shrek Forever After,” was released in 2010.

  • The ‘Shrek’ Honest Trailer Points Out ‘Overused Disney Tropes’ We Still Love

Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series has been taking on its most-requested films, and it finally got around to making a video for “Shrek,” fans’ No. 1 pick.

The video offers a good reminder that no, Disney didn’t make the film. Instead, “Shrek” came from DreamWorks Animation and parodied “all of the overused Disney tropes” by fully embracing them. “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em … while at the same time mercilessly mocking them,” the narrator says.

The video uses solid evidence to point out some of these tropes in action. For example, the narrator calls Shrek, “the reluctant, ugly hero who thinks no one who can love them,” and we see him next to Disney’s Beast and Quasimodo. Fiona, on the other hand, is described as a “no-nonsense princess,” much like Jasmine, Esmeralda, Mulan, and Pocahontas.

  • 11 Best Animated Movies Not Made by Disney

%Slideshow-322407%When we were kids, Disney movies took up a generous portion of our VHS shelf — and for good reason. “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” are just a few of the formative classics that shaped our childhood.

But the Mouse House isn’t the only studio we have care space for when it comes to animated films. In honor of “Rango’s” fifth anniversary, here are a few non-Disney animated movies that you gotta add to your collection.

  • Listen to Chris Farley as Original Shrek in Lost Recording

Chris FarleyThe lights went out too soon for funny and talented comedian Chris Farley, and we can only imagine what might’ve come out of his career had he not tragically died of a drug overdose in 1997. But now, we can hear what Farley would’ve sounded like in the animated hit “Shrek.”

Farley was originally supposed to voice the green monster, and he recorded about 90 percent of the dialogue before his untimely demise in 1997. A Reddit user posted this recording of Farley and Eddie Murphy, which plays over some sketches of Shrek and Donkey’s antics.

“Originally the Shrek character was a little bit more like Chris, like a humble, bumbling innocent guy,” Kevin Farley told Yahoo Movies. He recently produced a documentary about his brother’s life, titled “I Am Chris Farley.”

After Farley’s death, the movie replaced him with his “Saturday Night Live” co-star Mike Myers, who gave the character his now distinctive Scottish brogue. Now, for the first time, we can hear what Farley would’ve done with the role.

“I Am Chris Farley” is now in theaters and airs on Spike on Aug. 10.
