    • Zendaya is part of the cast for ‘Shrek 5.’
    • She’ll play the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
    • Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing the new movie.

Are we about to get another viral video along the lines of Gabriel Gundacker’s ‘Zendaya is Meechee’?

Given that the ‘Dune,’ ‘Challengers’ and ‘Euphoria’ star is set to follow her voice role in 2018’s ‘Smallfoot’ with another DreamWorks Animation title, we might just.

But in this case, she’s aboard the crown jewel of the company’s portfolio, the latest installment of the ‘Shrek’ franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the superstar has taken the role of main characters Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona’s (Cameron Diaz) daughter.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal confirmed the news in a new YouTube video…

The video also serves to lock down that Myers and Diaz are definitely back for this one, and we’ve already heard from Eddie Murphy on his confirmed return.

Here’s what Murphy told Collider during an interview for ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Axel F’:

“We started doing ‘Shrek 5’ months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek’ and we’re doing a ‘Donkey’ [movie].”

DreamWorks didn’t mention the Donkey movie, but there’s still a chance we’ll see that.

What’s the story of ‘Shrek 5’?

The ‘Shrek’ franchise launched with the Oscar-winning 2001 movie that centered on Myers’ ogre, Shrek, who falls for Fiona, the princess of Far Far Away who has been cursed, trapped in the body of an ogre. Donkey provided comic relief, pathos and friendship to Shrek, with the film praised for its humorous twist on fairy-tale tropes.

In addition to the main Shrek movies, it also spawned two ‘Puss in Boots‘ spinoffs, starring Antonio Banderas, which all propelled the franchise to becoming the second biggest in animation history, with $2.9 billion globally.

While the exact plotline for the new movie has yet to be revealed, there have been hints on how it’ll continue the story of the central ogre family and their various friends.

Michael McCullers, who was a key Myers collaborator on the ‘Austin Powers’ movies, has reportedly been at work on the screenplay for the new ‘Shrek’, working from a story he developed with producer Christopher Meledandri. All the ‘Shrek’ stories, of course, chart new tales based on the character originally featured in William Steig’s book.

We’ve seen various developments in Shrek’s life –– he and Fiona have a family (and Donkey has kids with his dragon partner), so perhaps we’ll be checking back in with their kids for a new story?

It could also potentially see Puss (Antonio Banderas) reuniting with his friends, as hinted at by the end of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’.

And as is usual for this franchise, there will no doubt be riffs on pop culture and fantasy tales.

This is what producer Meledandri told Variety last year of developing the next ‘Shrek’:

“It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements. And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”

    Who is making ‘Shrek 5’?

Shrek veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing, along with ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ co-director Brad Ableson.

Dohrn started his run on the franchise as a writer on ‘Shrek 2’ and ‘Shrek the Third,’ and as head of story on ‘Shrek Forever After,’ a film in which he voiced Rumpelstiltskin.

Vernon directed ‘Shrek 2,’ ‘Madagascar 2’ and voices Gingerbread Man (aka “Gingy”).

What else does Zendaya have on her schedule?

(L to R) Zendaya and Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Photo: Marvel Studios.

She is, as ever, a much in-demand actor.

Last year alone, Zendaya was seen in tennis love-triangle ‘Challengers’ and ‘Dune: Part Two,’ which featured less sports drama, but did also end up with its own love triangle (between Zendaya’s Chani, Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan… which, admittedly, is more of a power triangle).

Next up for Zendaya is Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which has just started shooting and stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and approximately half of Hollywood.

She’ll also reportedly (though it has yet to be officially confirmed) be back as MJ in the next ‘Spider-Man’ movie, which will also see Holland reprising his lead role as Peter Parker in the latest outing for the Marvel character, to be directed this time by Destin Daniel Cretton.

Those two giant movies are due in 2026, but she’s also worked on Kristoffer Borgli’s romantic movie ‘The Drama’ alongside Robert Pattinson. That doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but should be on screens this year.

Meanwhile, there is her much-anticipated return to HBO series ‘Euphoria,’ which has finally started shooting its third season and looks likely to be on screens next year.

When will ‘Shrek 5’ be in theaters?

The movie has a December 23rd, 2026, release date from Universal and DreamWorks, and is the first in the main series since 2010’s ‘Shrek Forever After.’

    • No story details have been released.

While on his ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ press tour, Eddie Murphy mentioned that he’d been recording voice work for a new entry in the ‘Shrek’ franchise, in which he plays Donkey (more on that below).

That might not count as official confirmation for the next ‘Shrek’ movie, but we have some now, via DreamWorks Animation on social media:

The tweet confirms that stars Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz will indeed return as Shrek and Fiona alongside Murphy.

It’s hardly surprising that the company would return to the ‘Shrek’ universe –– after all, it has earned more than $2.9 billion between the main entries and various spin-offs, including the ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. And added to that, a whole truckload of merchandise and various opportunities such as a Broadway musical, a touring show and theme park attractions.

We’ve known for a while that DreamWorks Animation –– never ones to let a franchise opportunity go to waste –– is developing a new installment of the ‘Shrek’ story, and now we have an update from one of the people who makes the movies what they are: actor Eddie Murphy, who provides the voice for fan-favorite character Donkey.

Murphy, who has been on the press tour for the return of one of his other big franchises –– ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ –– talked about what he knows so far.

Keeping the Shrek-verse expanding makes sense, as DreamWorks has seen big success with TV spin-offs and movies about other characters such as Puss In Boots –– whose most recent outing hit big with 2022’s ‘The Last Wish’, which scored $485.2 million globally.

Donkey, of course, is usually one of the more entertaining characters.

  • Movie Review: ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’

Debuting in theaters on December 21st, ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ reunites audiences with the dashing, daring feline hero who got his start in the ‘Shrek’ movies to humorous effect.

With 12 years between ‘Puss in Boots’ entries, you might be forgiven for thinking that DreamWorks Animation had decided to close the door on movies based on its ‘Shrek’ universe altogether, outside of occasional straight-to-streaming spin-offs.

Yet here comes Puss, riding back with a full theatrical release and leaving hints that we’ll be revisiting the wider ‘Shrek’-verse before too long.

Judged on its own merits, however, ‘The Last Wish’ is a worthy, funny follow-up to the 2011 movie, which gives a little extra depth to the charismatic hero, who has little time for rules or regulations.

    Puss in Boots

A quick burst of exposition catches us up with what Puss (Antonio Banderas, on enthusiastic vocal form as always) has been up to and provides a handy sketch for those who have not watched one of his appearances before.

Which is all to say: Puss has been being Puss––drinking lots of milk, pulling off daring feats, annoying local authorities and hosting raucous parties (the initial scene features a combination of all three).

But after his latest scrape, he realizes that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll: Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives. An early highlight is a flashback clip showing how the others were lost, the character falling afoul of canons, weightlifting accidents, and falls from great heights.

Worried that he’s on borrowed time, he initially decides to retire, heading for Mama Luna’s (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), a home for stray cats. Initially rebellious, he soon falls into a routine of eating with the others and using the litter tray like a regular moggy.

'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish'
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ opens in theaters on December 21st. © Universal Pictures.

A chance encounter with thieves who come looking for something at the house reveals the existence of the titular last wish––a star that could help him restore his spent lives. And along for the quest will be his former flame, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and new friend/annoyance Perro (Harvey Guillén), a pug who longs to find his place in the world and who had been hiding out at Mama Luna’s disguised as a cat.

Puss isn’t the only one looking for the star, though. He and his friends will have to stay one step ahead of Goldi (Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family, and Jack Horner (John Mulaney), a rich, spoiled brat who is constantly trying to shake his reputation as “Little” Jack Horner.

Plus, Puss is being pursued by a mysterious bounty hunter, the Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura), who appears to be more supernatural than your usual tracker. Could this be death on Puss’ trail given his lack of lives?

‘The Last Wish’ certainly stands as a solid sequel to ‘Puss in Boots’, and boasts an attractive, imaginative animation style that, like ‘The Bad Guys’ before it, owes a debt to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ for its blend of techniques that give the movie a painterly quality and the feeling of anime at different points.

'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish' opens in theaters on December 21st.
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ opens in theaters on December 21st. © Universal Pictures.

It’s certainly a shift from the standard look of the previous movie and other ‘Shrek’ entries, and makes for a frenetic, yet clear visual palette. If the teams behind these films are going to keep experimenting and finding new ways to present these movies, it’s something to be encouraged.

Story-wise, this remains your basic quest mixed with pop culture references (though the latter side has been toned down some). Wacky villains are brought to life by a fine cast of voices beyond those we’ve already listed, including Olivia Colman as Mama Bear and Ray Winstone as Papa Bear.

Banderas is still the beating, comical heart of the film, but combined with the updated animation, Puss really does seem to have a new life in this story. He’s always been one of the more entertaining characters from this fairy tale-spoofing cinematic universe (and deserving of spin-off films), and ‘The Last Wish’ earns its place in the canon.

Hayek, meanwhile, is still a delight as Kitty, every bit Puss’ equal on the action front and even more cunning when the moment calls for it. And though some of the others don’t get as much to do (Colman, Winstone and Samson Kayo as the bears are rarely handled the best material, though Mulaney’s vocal style makes Jack work on a level he might not otherwise), this is more visually dynamic than vocal.

'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish'
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ opens in theaters on December 21st. © Universal Pictures

The nods to classic stories are smart and feed into the plot, directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, along with writers Tommy Swerdlow and Paul Fisher keeping the whole affair light on its feet (as is befitting a crafty cat). And the jokes come thick and fast––if some don’t land, another is on the way to make up for it a few seconds later. It’s fast and fun.

And yes, there are of course callbacks to past Puss stories, including the deployment of nuclear-level cute faces from both Puss and Kitty (Perro trying his own with, let’s charitably call them, “mixed” results).

It’s never going to challenge the minutely crafted likes of ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ or ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’, but it’s far from a pumped-out moneymaking exercise. But unlike ‘Pinocchio’ it features little––aside, perhaps from a couple of moments with the wolf––likely to traumatize the youngest in the audience.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ receives 3.5 out of 5 stars.

  • New Trailer for ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’

    Puss in Boots
Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,’ directed by Joel Crawford.

Our first look at the latest ‘Shrek’ fantasy universe spin-off – a new adventure for swashbuckling feline hero Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) – arrived via the first trailer back in March.

Now here’s the second trailer, which fills in a few more details.

The story of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ is a relatively simple one: Puss, the crusading, heroic, flamboyant hero/musician is still happy to pull off daring feats and strum a few catchy tunes. But all his adventuring has started to catch up with him. After an unfortunate run-in with a falling bell during his latest gig – in both senses of the word, since he was playing music and battling a giant – leads to him losing his eighth life, he begins to realize that he only has one left.

Yet while on-again-off-again girlfriend Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek) tries to convince him – using all her cute-face superpowers that outrank his own – that having one life to live makes it even more special, Puss is not ready to admit defeat, and he heads out to find a way to get more life before death.

In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided — against their better judgment — by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family (Ray Winstone’s gravelly tones are behind Papa Bear), “Big” Jack Horner (John Mulaney) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).

The cast also includes Samson Kayo, Anthony Mendez, and Olivia Colman.

    MuqcpAel

In this latest trailer, we also see where Puss is advised to head when he first learns of his conundrum – a quieter, “safer” life with Mama Luna (voiced by Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has quite the collection of felines already (none of which are particularly happy to see the new arrival).

An existence of filthy litter boxes, knitted booties, and a new name (Pickles) would seem to beckon, but while Pus tries to make the best of it, his past catches up with him.

Mama Luna’s is also where he meets Perro, who, it turns out is a therapy dog. Oh, and unless we’re mistaken, that’s former DreamWorks staff member (and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ co-director) Bob Persichetti popping up as the “Ohhh Cat” among Mama Luna’s feline charges.

The animation style appears to be slightly shifted away from the original movie’s look – there’s a more painterly feel to it, more along the lines of DreamWorks’ recent ‘The Bad Guys’.

Joel Crawford, who directed ‘The Croods 2: A New Age’ is behind the new ‘toon, working alongside Januel Mercado, who also worked on the prehistoric sequel, with a script from Paul Fisher.

And the movie also marks a small point of DreamWorks history – it’s the first sequel derived from a spin-off movie.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ will be in theaters on September 23.

As you will have read yesterday, the sequel to 2011’s ‘Puss in Boots’ is on its way after some development hairballs. Yesterday’s news was of casting – the likes of Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman and ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Harvey Guillén joined the movie, and now we can hear at least a few of the new recruits in the first trailer.

The story of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ is a relatively simple one: Puss (voiced as usual by Antonio Banderas) is a crusading, heroic, flamboyant hero/musician, happy to pull off daring feats and strum a few catchy tunes. But all his adventuring has started to catch up with him. After an unfortunate run-in with a falling bell during his latest gig – in both senses of the word, since he was playing music and battling a giant – leads to him losing his eighth life, he begins to realize that he only has one left.

A funny montage explains how he shed the others – lethal encounters include angry dogs playing (and losing) at poker, being trampled to death by bulls, being shot from a cannon, a sumo wrestling match and an apparent serious shellfish allergy. And he hasn’t really noticed the chances ticking away, because, as he admits, he’s not “a math guy.”

Yet while girlfriend Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek) tries to convince him – using all her cute-face superpowers that outrank his own – that having one life to live makes it even more special, Puss is not ready to admit defeat, and he heads out to find a way to get more life before death.

In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided — against their better judgment — by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Guillén). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (John Mulaney) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ features a comedic cast that includes Colman, Ray Winstone (something of a ‘Black Widow’ reunion for him and Pugh, then), Samson Kayo from ‘Our Flag Means Death’, ‘Jane the Virgin’s Anthony Mendez and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, a DreamWorks Animation veteran following ‘Trolls World Tour’.

Puss is, of course, himself a veteran of several ‘Shrek’ movies, his own first film and several videos and TV series. Is it any wonder he’s burned through so many lives?

‘The Last Wish’ is similarly living a second chance – following a tricky filmmaking process that saw the movie cancelled once, punted around the DreamWorks release schedule and with more than one director listed as aboard then vanishing like someone cursed by a witch. The movie’s now in the home stretch and headed to screens.

This current version comes courtesy of ‘The Croods: A New Age’ director Joel Crawford and producer by Mark Swift, with the movie now set for release on September 23.

(L to R) Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek), Perro (Harvey Guillén), Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’.

We’ve known for a while that Antonio Banderas will be bringing his vocal stylings once more to the charismatic, sword-swinging feline for DreamWorks Animation sequel ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’. News arrives today that Salma Hayek will be back as Kitty Softpaws, while a host of new casting has also been announced.

Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Harvey Guillén, Wagner Moura, Ray Winstone, John Mulaney, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Anthony Mendez and Samson Kayo are all now part of the team for this next outing, according to Deadline.

The story for the new movie is set two months after the events of the first film, when Puss discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: He has burned through eight of his nine lives, leaving him with only one left. He sets out on an epic journey to find the mystical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

So far, the only person with a named character on that list of new voices is ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Guillén, who is playing Perro, a scruffy dog that is friends with our heroes. And Hayek’s Softpaws, of course, will be back as Puss’ great love, albeit one who keeps him on his toes. Well.. toe beans?

Puss as a character was introduced back in 2004’s ‘Shrek 2’, where he quickly became an audience favorite. His eponymous spin-off movie, however, didn’t appear until 2011 and the road to a sequel has taken even longer.

Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots
Antonio Banderas in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Puss In Boots.’

Chatter about a potential follow-up first started in 2012, when Guillermo del Toro (who was consulting as a producer for the DreamWorks team) announced that one was in the early stages. Banderas followed that up in 2014, saying in April of that year that work had already begun.

DreamWorks went on to announce the title – ‘Puss in Boots: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves’ in June 2014, setting a November 2018 release date. A mere two months later, the warning signs began as it was delayed to December 2018.

Fast-forward to January 2015, and the sequel was yanked from the schedules amidst corporate and creative restructuring before Banderas was back in March talking about script re-writes.

Finally, in 2021, the movie re-emerged properly with its new title and a release date set for this year. There had been talk during its earlier development that Mike Myers might show up as Shrek, whose own franchise is still somewhat up in the air. Despite plenty of stories about a potential fifth film, and possibly a reboot, nothing concrete has emerged yet.

Joel Crawford, who directed ‘The Croods 2: A New Age’ will direct this one, alongside Januel Mercado, who also worked on the prehistoric sequel. And the movie also makes a small point of DreamWorks history – it’s the first sequel derived from a spin-off movie.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ will be in theaters on September 23.

More ‘Shrek’ and ‘Puss in Boots’ Movies Could Be Coming

Donkey, Shrek, and Puss in Boots
    DreamWorks

You probably haven’t seen the last of your favorite ogre, donkey, and boot-wearing cat.

Now that DreamWorks Animation is part of Paramount Pictures, “Despicable Me” producer Chris Meledandri is looking for ideas for more “Shrek” and “Puss in Boots” films. He told Variety that “there a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world.”

Talk of adding to the franchise isn’t new. Even before DreamWorks Animation moved to Paramount, it looked like we would likely be getting more at some point. In 2014, then-DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a Fox Business Network interview (via a Variety report), “I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series.” That same year, a “Puss in Boots” sequel was even scheduled to hit theaters in November 2018.

Yet, here we are in November 2018, and neither of those films have come out. For Paramount at least, “the challenge … has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels,” as Meledandri told Variety.

Whatever story they settle on, he understands that a lot of the fun comes from the actors who have voiced the characters, Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots).

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” Meledandri said.

We hope all goes according to plan. The movies just wouldn’t be the same without the original voices.

  • How the DreamWorks Theatre At Universal Studios Hollywood Puts You Inside the Movie

The next DreamWorks Animation feature doesn’t hit theaters until March 1, 2019. That’s when “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” the third film in the beloved franchise, is released; it’s also worth noting that it’s the first DWA movie since “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which came out way back in the summer of 2017.

But if you need your DreamWorks Animation fix, there’s a brand-new attraction opening at Universal Studios Hollywood this summer that plunges you into one of your favorite animated adventures.

As part of a continued effort to revitalize the theme park, which includes the popular (and very lucrative) Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the DreamWorks Theatre featuring “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest” is set to officially open next week. The past home to the Shrek 4-D attraction, this new state-of-the-art experience is something that is genuinely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. And we got to experience it early, while taking a behind-the-scenes peek.

If you’ve visited the park and been to Shrek 4-D, you’ll notice some, at least superficial, similarities to that previous attraction (which opened in May 2003 and closed last summer). But virtually everything else has changed.

The show building will remind you of a classic Hollywood studio, and if you’ve ever visited or seen photos of the animation studio’s campus in Glendale, California, you’ll recognize that some things — including the Spanish-style architecture — have been borrowed, too.

After watching a pre-show in which various DreamWorks characters bicker and argue about who will get to star in this brand new experience, one character triumphs: Po from “Kung Fu Panda.” From there, you enter the theater for what John Corfino, the Creative Director at Universal Studios, described to us as “a transformative and immersive experience.” (He also stressed how different the 241-seat theater was from the previous attraction, explaining that the new theater has “a different geometry.”)

The actual ride film follows Po and some of his friends as they track down a mystical artifact that has been stolen. Corfino was cagey about what celebrity voice talent would be returning, although we can confirm no talent returned, so don’t expect to hear Jack Black during the attraction. As you watch the ride film unfold, the action expands, outwardly, until the entire theater is a part of the action. The attraction isn’t 3D, but the seats do have motion and you will feel the wind in your hair and get sprayed with water (of course); Corfino said that in many ways the seats furthest most back are the very best, since you can survey everything that is happening, all around you.

But what magic allows, say, Po to climb out of the screen and into another part of the theater? Two words: projection mapping.

Now, the basic technology behind projection mapping has been around for a while, and in recent years has become a favorite for theme park projects, where its been utilized for everything from nighttime spectaculars to more articulate faces for audio-animatronic figures. But this is the first time it’s been used like this in a theater setting. Corfino said that there was a lot of trial and error, with testing to figure out what shape the theater could be for the effect to work. 3D was considered for the attraction but they wanted people to look around the theater more organically. “Embrace the peripheral potential” is the phrase he used.

And while we didn’t see the finished product (it was still being tested); the experience of watching the ride film unfold (and we mean that literally) is incredibly thrilling. It’s one thing to just be seated in front of a screen, it’s another thing to watch the characters and action spill out into the physical environment around you. Quite frankly, it really does make you feel like you’re inside a DreamWorks Animation movie, with all of the zany humor, sight gags, and subtle nods that you’d expect.

When the attraction opens next week, visitors to Universal Hollywood are going to get a truly animated experience.

  • ‘SNL’ Fans Really Related to That ‘Shrek’ vs. ‘Coco’ Sketch

“Saturday Night Live” hit the jackpot with host Sterling K. (for Kathleen, but not really) Brown. Sure, there were a couple of weak sketches, but the good ones were very good.

The March 10 show went hard on pop culture references, starting with a political cold open set to Arie’s “unedited” “The Bachelor” finale breakup. Later in the show, “This Is Us” political spoof, “This Is U.S.”

But fans jumped into the debate themselves after the Family Dinner sketch.

In the sketch, SKB’s character, Justin, attacks his girlfriend’s parents for liking “Coco” more than the best animated movie of all time (to him) “Shrek.”

“You’re wrong. You’re wrong and you’re a stupid person. […] I can’t believe I have to defend a movie with three hit sequels and a 4-D Universal Studios ride. But let’s all bend over backwards for ‘Coco’!”

The best part is when Sterling throws water in Beck Bennett’s face — twice. (“Keep his name out of your mouth, you dumb sonofab*tch!”)Fans appreciated the “Shrek” shoutout — like that viral meme come to life — although others defended “Coco”:

Where do you stand on that? There are good reasons for Pixar movies to stand out, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best. And don’t ignore the old school Disney movies, or international animation.

Anyway, in other SNL news, Vanessa Bayer returned to reprise her role as meteorologist Dawn Lazarus. Hap! Here’s that, and the crazy Nickelback sketch that ended the night:

Bill Hader is hosting next Saturday, so … the hottest club in New York is STEFON IS COMING.
