    • Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller will star in ‘Paper Tiger.’
    • They replace Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway in the crime drama.
    • James Gray wrote and is about to start directing the movie.

It’s all change –– well, not quite all change… but some change for ‘Ad Astra’ writer/director James Gray, who is swapping out some hefty A-list names for some equally notable talent on his new crime movie ‘Paper Tiger.’

While back in November last year he had Adam Driver set to star alongside Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong (who appeared in his most recent directorial effort, the semi-autobiographical ‘Armageddon Time’), he’s down two actors, as Hathaway and Strong have since had to drop out for scheduling reasons.

Since the movie, as the below logline suggests, sees brothers getting into deep trouble with the Russian mob, we can only assume Strong decided he needed more time to become a Soviet crime boss in real life to prepare.

Still, Gray is pushing forward with a new lead duo to work opposite Driver –– Deadline brings word that Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller will be taking over the roles, and cameras should be rolling next month in New Jersey.

The new movie, which Gray wrote, is described a tense and gritty story revolving around two brothers (we’d guess Teller and Driver) who pursue the American Dream — only to become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true.

As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian “Mafiya.” Their bond begins to fray, and betrayal — once utterly unthinkable — now becomes all too possible.

Johansson will be back on our screens this summer, leading ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, playing a specialist who must lead a group of scientists and mercenaries to the island where the original Jurassic Park dinos were bred in search of medical resources.

The latest entry in the giant beastie franchise will stomp on to our screens on July 2nd.

On a very different scale (and wavelength) Johansson also has her latest collaboration with director Wes Anderson, ‘The Phoenician Scheme’, which will see theaters next month, June 6th.

And possibly even more excitingly, Johansson is making her directorial debut with drama ‘Eleanor the Great,’ which stars June Squibb in the story of a 900-year-old Floridian woman who moves to New York City for a fresh start. When Making new friends her age proves difficult, she unexpectedly befriends a 19-year-old student.

That movie, formerly known as ‘Eleanor, Invisible,’ also stars Erin Kellyman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jessica Hecht, and scored a deal with Sony Pictures Classics. It’ll make its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

What else is Miles Teller attached to?

Teller, whose past resume also includes the likes of ‘Whiplash,’ the 2011 version of ‘Footloose,’Spiderhead’ ‘Rabbit Hole,’ the less-than-loved 2015 take on ‘Fantastic Four’ and, most recently, Apple TV+ horror action thriller ‘The Gorge,’ is a busy, in-demand actor.

He has ‘Eternity’ on the way, a new A24 movie directed by David Freyne that also stars Callum Turner, Elizabeth Olsen and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

It’s the story of how, after death, everybody gets one week to choose where to spend eternity. But for  main characters Joan, Larry, and Luke, it’s really a question of who to spend it with.

While the movie doesn’t have a set release date in place yet, it’s already drawing potential awards buzz.

Then there is ‘Michael,’ the musical biopic of superstar Michael Jackson, in which Teller plays John Branca, Jackson’s manager, lawyer and close friend. The movie currently has an October release window from Lionsgate, though there has been chatter about legal issues surrounding the depiction of one of his accusers in a sexual abuse case, and the potential for the movie to be split in two so as to cover the full breadth of Jackson’s story.

Outside of those, there is animated tale ‘The Ark and the Aardvark,’ in which Teller voices Gilbert, the titular creature, who is given the task of shepherding the animals on to Noah’s Ark.

And we know he’ll be part of Paul Downs Colaizzo’s ‘Winter Games,’ set in the high-stakes arena of the Winter Olympic Games, following a perpetually overlooked skier and a self-sabotaging hockey legend (Teller) who collide at their breaking points. Their unexpected connection threatens her chance for a medal and his shot at a comeback as they navigate romance and redemption in the Olympic Village.

Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in 'Top Gun: Maverick' from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

The actor is also attached to the long-developing third outing for the ‘Top Gun’ franchise, where he would reprise the role of Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, AKA the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose from the 1986 original.

More recently, it was announced via Deadline that Teller will lead the cast for quirky new music comedy ‘Possum Song,’ directed by ‘Sing Sing’s Greg Kwedar to follow his Oscar-nominated prison pic.

Written by Isaac Adamson, ‘Possum Song’ will follow Eddie (Teller), an overconfident Nashville star who is hiding a dark secret: He stole the songs for his hit debut album.

Now, with a new wife and a baby on the way, Eddie must write his follow-up solo or risk losing everything. But just when things seem most hopeless, Eddie discovers a musical genius in the form of a magical possum with whom he strikes a dangerous Faustian bargain.

FilmNation is backing the movie, and here’s what Ben Browning, the company’s president of motion pictures had to say about it:

“This is a one-of-a-kind film. Greg’s vision, Isaac’s hilarious script and the magnetic performance of Miles Teller will create the kind of cinematic ride that audiences are craving — with showstopping music, visceral shocks, possums, humor and emotion.”

There are a number of other projects on his To Do list, including crime thriller ‘Wild Game,’ ‘Bartali,’ another sporting tale (where Teller would here play champion cyclist Gino Bartali, who put his career on hold to fight in World War II) and Martin Scorsese’s wishlist project ‘The Life of Jesus,’ which also has Andrew Garfield attached but has still yet to shoot.

When will ‘Paper Tiger’ be in theaters?

Since we’re in the Cannes Film Festival zone (a little bit like The Twilight Zone, but with fewer gremlins ripping bits off plane wings), add this one to the list of titles up for sale to distributors.

Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans are representing the international sales rights and CAA Media Finance is handling North American rights. With the movie still in sales limbo, we’ll have to wait to see which company picks it up and what date it assigns to the movie.

    • ‘Wicked: For Good’, ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ and more were showcased at Universal’s CinemaCon show.
    • There was news of sequels to the live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘The Bad Guys.’
    • The likes of Jon M. Chu and Scarlett Johansson were on stage to support their movies.

Universal’s 2024 was successful partly thanks to Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation ‘Wicked,’ and with follow-up ‘Wicked: For Good’ on the way this year, some of the studio’s focus was always going to be on the movie –– which features two new songs not found in the stage source material.

Beyond that, we were expecting peeks at movies from the studio’s various arms and partners at this year’s CinemaCon presentation, including horror home Blumhouse and DreamWorks Animation, which continues to push the likes of the ongoing ‘Shrek’ franchise and others.

And not forgetting dinosaurs: another jewel in Universal’s crown in the ‘Jurassic Park’/‘Jurassic World’ movies, and with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ headed to theaters this summer, we’d have been shocked to not see something fresh from that.

Here’s what happened at the studio’s show and tell…

Universal’s big display kicked off sonically, with the company’s President of music and publishing Mike Knobloch introducing Rickey Minor and an all-star orchestra playing a collection of tunes from the studio’s back catalogue –– ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Fast & Furious,’ ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Jaws’ and even the likes of DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Shrek’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ with clips from the movies on screens.

And, naturally, last year’s huge smash was among them, with ‘Wicked’ fully represented.

Universal chairman Donna Langley arrived on stage to celebrate the fact that the studio has released more theatrical movies since the pandemic than any other. She bypassed the idea that shrinking theatrical windows were to blame for audiences skipping cinemas.

Pete Levinson, the chairman of Universal distribution took over to essentially praise the company for its $3 billion in grosses last year. And to remind us all that ‘Wicked: For Good’ is on the way in November.

    But properly first?

    Jurassic World: Rebirth

As the orchestra stuck up John Williams’ classic ‘Jurassic Park’ theme, stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali arrived on stage alongside director Gareth Edwards to talk about the movie.

Noted dino fan Johansson related how she’s tried to get cast in all three previous ‘Jurassic World’ movies without success, eventually collaring Steven Spielberg to plead her case.

Edwards joked she was probably too expensive for the films –– which didn’t seem to sit well with Scarlet (probably all in good fun?)

The director also recalled watching the original ‘Jurassic Park’ as a kid (10 times in a day!) and how much of an honor it is direct this talented cast in a ‘Jurassic’ movie. He dropped mention that Mahershala is an Oscar winner, to which Ali comically corrected him that he has two!

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ filmed in Thailand, with Johansson recalling many “pinch me’ moments on set and on location.

The trio introduced some fresh footage from the movie –– some of it unfinished. Mahershala said he’d seen it, to which Scarlet joked she was supposed to see everything first per her contract.

As for the footage, it largely tracked what we saw in the first trailer, with Johansson’s specialist leading a team to an abandoned ‘Jurassic Park’ staging island to retrieve genetic material to source lifegiving medical cures. A new hybrid dino we’ve yet to meet

Following their short before ‘Dog Man,’ the ‘Bad Guys’ crew will be properly back on our screen later this year.

Craig Robinson and Awkwafina were on stage to discuss it (and crack wise, including joking that co-stars Sam RockwellMarc Maron and Anthony Ramos aren’t there because they’re banned from Vegas).

Holding inflatable versions of their characters, Robinson said:

“We’ve got a legit franchise now, baby!”

The first trailer for the movie was played, showing that our Bad Guys are lured out of do-gooding by a group of bad girls.

The live-action/CG take on the tale (which screened earlier in the day at the event to generally great acclaim) had stars Gerard Butler and Nico Parker on stage alongside director Dean DeBlois to talk it up.

They also announced that a sequel has already been greenlit, and that that one will fly into theaters on June 11th, 2027.

Butler was also given the chance to set the orchestra playing some of John Powell’s recognizable score.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’s live-action remake will be flying into cinemas on June 13th.

    ‘HIM’

Produced by Jordan Peele, the blend of sports story and horror sees a promising young football player joining an isolated compound to train under a dynasty team’s aging quarterback.

Directed by Justin Tipping, the movie had stars Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers on stage to promote it.

    Wayans began by quipping:

“I’m finally the only Wayans here. I’m tenth of ten kids. I don’t think Keenan (his brother) knows my name!”

Withers, meanwhile, told the crowd that they’ve never seen Wayans like this before.

The pair then cued up the creepy first look at the movie, which promises a blend of ‘The Substance’ and American Football.

‘HIM’ will touch down at theaters on September 19th.

Next, it was the turn of Focus Features…

Focus chairman Peter Kujawski took the stage to hype his studio arm’s upcoming titles and say that every film by the company is made for theatrical.

He dropped word of Wes Anderson’s latest, ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet,’ ‘Anemone,’ which Ronan Day-Lewis co-wrote with his father, Daniel Day-Lewis, who left retirement to appear in the movie. And, of course, there’s reportedly final ‘Downton Abbey’ movie ‘The Grand Finale.’

    Bugonia

That was followed by the first trailer for ‘Kinds of Kindness’ director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie, ‘Bugonia,’ which reunites that movie’s Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

It’ll creep into theaters on November 7th.

The orchestra struck up music of the video game adaptation, which heralded one of the animatronic characters (well, a suit based on them) striding on stage.

After some confusion as to how to remove the head, it turned out to be company boss Jason Blum, who joked he so loves to save money that he was in the costumes the whole time for the original movie.

The original ‘Freddy’s is Blumhouse’s biggest hit of all time, so of course the sequel is already in the works. Blum also apologized for the decision to make that movie day and date on Peacock, so this follow-up will be cinemas only upon release.

    And that release? December 5th.

Blum also cued up a teaser, which sees the return of Josh Hutcherson’s Mike and more animatronic chaos.

Not done with the costume theatrics, Blum arrived back on stage in a Grabber mask to offer that the sequel to Scott Derrickson’s 2021 kidnap horror thriller will be in theaters on October 17th.

Actor Madeleine McGraw, who returns for the new movie (and is CinemaCon 2025 Rising Star of the Year), joined Blum on stage to talk about the movie, which is Derrickson’s first-ever sequel.

We were treated to a first look trailer for the new movie. The footage finds the two kids (played by McGraw and Mason Thames) dealing with the repercussions of the first movie. Ethan Hawke’s Grabber is back –– even though he died –– but we only hear his voice in the trailer.

The follow-up takes the ‘Terminator 2’ approach, with an even more threatening AI system going online and M3GAN has to be re-activated to stop it.

Atomic Monster boss James Wan –– whose company has formed a creative partnership with Blumhouse –– came on stage to talk up ‘Soulm8te,’ which if it sounds like a more grown up take on ‘M3GAN’ (or really, ‘Companion,’ with its story of a female robo-partner who turns out to be an issue), that’s because it’s set in the same universe as the devious doll.

He confirmed the likes of ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie 2′ (April 2026), ‘Minions 3’ (July 2026) and ‘Shrek 5‘ (yes, featuring Zendaya in a voice role, arriving Christmas 2026).

But there are originals too, including Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ (July 2026) and a certain Mr. Steven Spielberg’s still-to-be-titled new event movie, which will arrive in June 2026.

Opening in theaters on September 20th, ‘Transformers One’ winds the clock further back than the usual ‘Transformers’ movies to focus on what happened before Optimus Prime and Megatron –– the respective leaders of the Autobot and Decepticon forces –– assumed those roles.

Plenty of ‘Transformers’ fans who were kids in the 1980s will have fond memories of ‘Transformers: The Movie’ And while the franchise has, in the years since Michael Bay launched the live-action/CG series of movies, varied greatly in quality, the key to success here appears is in returning the story to its animated roots.

Prequel stories are always an uphill struggle. You’re balancing audience expectation –– since we already know that at least one of the characters will survive to go on and have further adventures, so where’s the sense of jeopardy? –– and those who would complain that turning back the clock to the early days of established characters is a form of creative bankruptcy. After all, does anyone really need to know how Darth Vader ended up in that iconic suit, no matter the tease about his past offered in the original ‘Star Wars’? And you risk being accused of cheapening stories that people love.

Spare a thought, then for the team behind ‘Transformers One,’ who have found way to take very recognizable franchise archetypes and give them a welcome coming-of-age twist. Did you ever think that Optimus Prime and Megatron might have been buddies way back before they were enemies? No? Well, the new movie is here to show you why that works as a story.

The script here originated –– at least, according to the credits –– with Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (who have the likes of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ ‘Die in a Gunfight’ and ‘Haunt’ on their shared resumes) and was then worked on by Eric Pearson (who contributed to such movies as ‘Black Widow,’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong‘). And since director Josh Cooley is a graduate of Pixar (he oversaw ‘Toy Story 4’) you’ve got to figure he had a hand in tuning the story too.

Together, the writers have put together something that is vital, entertaining and energetic (energon-etic, perhaps?) fusing the tropes of young men finding their way in the world with some of the unexplored lore of the planet Cybertron, home to the Transformers.

Perhaps more importantly, they’ve come up with credible explanations for why and how Optimus Prime and Megatron became the leaders that they did (for good and ill), and what sparked their ongoing conflict, one that spilled over to our planet.

The dialogue is witty and fun for kids, but also works for older fans who grew up with these characters. Yes, there will be those who question quite how human these robots feel, but the Transformers have always had relatable human characteristics.

Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Perhaps the biggest issue –– and one the creative team is mostly able to overcome –– is that this new movie represents just the latest example of the hero’s journey/find the MacGuffin journey story to hit screens. That in itself has sunk many a film that doesn’t do anything fresh or new with those age-old concepts, but here Cooley and co. find a way to graft on entertaining layers while following familiar paths.

On the visual front, the movie (with animation chiefly crafted by Industrial Light and Magic) might not challenge the best of Pixar or DreamWorks for sheer quality, style and depth, but it’s impressive enough, particularly when it ventures onto the surface of Cybertron.

Plus, while some of the fight scenes verge into the over-frenetic, there’s enough logic behind them that you won’t end up rubbing your eyes at all the CG clashes on display.

    Performances

The vocal cast for the movie all does good work, with a few highlights:

    Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax

Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.

The biggest issue legacy fans of the franchise may have is in the movie replacing Peter Cullen, long the voice of Optimus Prime on the big screen. But it helps to remember that this is Prime before he was Prime. Orion Pax is a garrulous ambitious, sometimes irresponsible type who has dreams of being more than the mining worker he’s seemingly destined to be. In Hemsworth’s hands –– well, vocal chords –– he’s an enthusiastic, likeable presence and you can see how he ends up as the character we know.

    Brian Tyree Henry as D-16

Brian Tyree Henry (D-16/Megatron) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.

Likewise, Henry might not have quite the vocal power of Frank Welker (Megatron’s traditional performer), but D-16 never needed to start out as the scheming, power-hungry Decepticon of the cartoons and (some of) the live-action movies. Here, he’s more subdued and thoughtful, a good friend to Orion and willing to go along with his ideas at least until they reach a true dividing point.

    Keegan-Michael Key as B-127

Keegan-Michael Key (B-127) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.
Keegan-Michael Key (B-127) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Key is a proven comic performer and playing the robot who will become Bumblebee feels like the perfect role for him in the movie. He’s a chatty sort, desperate for friends (so desperate that we meet the ones he has built at one funny moment paid off in a mid-credits sting) and eager to tag along with Orion and the rest. Cooley and co. find a way to utilize his comic relief without it becoming annoying.

    Scarlett Johansson as Elita -1

Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Johansson has perhaps less to do than the others, but she’s still fun, offering a no-nonsense foil to Orion in particular and giving the world’s least encouraging pep talk at one point.

The cast around the leads is peppered with strong performances –– Laurence Fishburne slips easily into Morpheus mode when dishing out gobs of exposition about the hidden history of Cybertron, and helping our heroes find their new path(s). Jon Hamm, meanwhile, is the feted Sentinel Prime, the powerful leader of Cybertron whose has the planet’s best interests at heart… or does he? Hamm’s not called upon to do much more than be heroic and then something less than that, but he does it well.

    Final Thoughts

‘Transformers One’ should prove entertaining to those who grew up playing with the action figures or watching the cartoons and the generations that have embraced the Autobots and Decepticons since then. It’s not a perfect film, with a few gaps of logic and one or two cliches still lurking, but it’s easily one of the best movies to feature the characters, and never needs human interaction to keep it grounded.

The new ‘Transformers’ animated movie has the touch. It also has the power.

‘Transformers One’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

While ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022 seemed to signal the end for the franchise that was spawned way back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park,’ turns out it was less of an extinction-level event and more of a brief pause between eras.

Because, far from letting a cash dinosaur just wither into nothingness, Universal began making plans for another movie featuring giant beasties and the humans who want to help, hunt or otherwise avoid being snack food last year.

What is now officially titled ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ has come together quickly, and now with shooting still in progress, we have the first look at some of the human characters including those played by Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

Here’s the official synopsis for the new movie:

“Five years after the events of ‘Jurassic World Dominion,’ the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

Directing this time is Gareth Edwards, who is best known for the likes of ‘Monsters’ in 2010, 2014’s ‘Godzilla,’ ‘2016’s ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and, most recently, last year’s sci-fi pic ‘The Creator.’

    • The ‘Transformers One’ Panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con featured casting news about Laurence Fishburne and Steve Buscemi.
    • Chris Hemsworth and Tyree Henry are among the leads.
    • ‘Toy Story 4’ director Josh Cooley made the new movie.

While this year’s outing of the San Diego Comic-Con has so far proved to be a relatively quiet one (at least until the likes of Marvel show up to offer tantalizing news tidbits), there was some new information about an animated movie that is garnering some positive buzz off the back of early screenings: ‘Transformers One’.

The movie, which stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key and Scarlett Johansson features the much-loved robots in disguise… but at a time when they were able to transform at all.

It kicked off one of the early presentation panels, and the actors (minus Johansson, who was busy on the new ‘Jurassic World’ film) were on hand alongside director Josh Cooley (‘Toy Story 4’) and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to debut some fresh footage and provide some new insight into the movie.

And the panel also offered up the latest trailer, which you can watch above.

The new movie is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

Hemsworth voices Orion Pax, who will become Autobot leader Optimus Prime, while Henry is D-16, the future Megatron. Key plays B-127, a chatty ‘bot who’ll later be known as Bumblebee, and Johansson is Elita-1.

What did we learn about the ‘Transformers One’ cast?

The panel included word (or rather, confirmation) that Jon Hamm is playing Cybertron leader Sentinel Prime, with Laurence Fishburne taking the Morpheus-alike role of Alpha Prion.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was word that Steve Buscemi voices Starscream, who we know will become one of Megatron’s (usually) loyal lieutenants. In ‘Transformers One’, they’re in opposition, with Starscream proclaiming that “the idea of a unified Cybertron is a myth” –– though it’s clear D-16 is starting to have doubts about his alliances.

Among the panel highlights were funny moments, including Hemsworth remarking that he and Henry –– who never shared a recording booth –– prepped to play best friends by sleeping in bunk beds.

Key, meanwhile (whose character is the comic relief for the movie), looked to lead the Hall H audience in a rendition of the ‘Transformers’ cartoon theme tune, only to find few takers. “Good, now we know who’s over 40,” he quipped.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura at the Comic-Con 2022 'Transformers One' presentation.

This is what producer di Bonaventura had to say about the advantages of animation for a Transformers movie:

“If we did this as a live-action movie, it would probably cost $500M. What has been tricky in live-action is that every time a robot talks, it costs a lot of money. In animation, you can have them build out their character.”

And for Cooley, it was a chance to dig into the characters lore.

“Hasbro gave me the bible of ‘Transformers’, this Tolkien-length history –– so much to play with, a huge sandbox –– I wanted the feeling of what it was like to play with the toys as a kid, that feeling of nostalgia and joy trying to make these things work.”

  • Movie Review: ‘Fly Me to the Moon’

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in 'Fly Me to the Moon'.

Opening in theaters July 12th is ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ directed by Greg Berlanti and starring Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jim Rash, Anna Garcia, Ray Romano, and Woody Harrelson.

    Initial Thoughts

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in 'Fly Me to the Moon'.
(L to R) Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. Photo: Columbia Pictures.

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ has ambitions almost as large as that of the men and women of NASA who are trying in the film to land a human being on the Moon. It wants to be a rom-com. It wants to be a screwball comedy. It’s kind of a conspiracy thriller. And it’s a sweeping historical drama about the effort to send the Apollo 11 mission into space – and it’s that last version of the film that works best, when it gets its turn onscreen.

The problem with this enjoyable but uneven movie from director Greg Berlanti (perhaps best known as the architect of the now-defunct Arrowverse) is that it never fully decides what it wants to be, and its best parts battle for space with the parts that don’t work as well. Yet it’s still fun in a lot of spots, with great work from Scarlett Johansson and scene-stealing performances from Woody Harrelson, Jim Rash, and the second plucky cat we’ve seen in a major summer movie following the debut of Frodo in ‘A Quiet Place: Day One.’

    Story and Direction

Scarlett Johansson, Woody Harrelson, director Greg Berlanti and Channing Tatum on the set of 'Fly Me to the Moon'.
(L to R) Scarlett Johansson, Woody Harrelson, director Greg Berlanti and Channing Tatum on the set of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. Photo: Columbia Pictures.

It’s the 1960s (Shane Valentino’s production design is spot-on) and NASA has been having trouble getting it up – a rocket into orbit, that is. The Soviet Union is beating the U.S. in the space race and the government (transitioning from Lyndon B. Johnson to Richard M. Nixon) is desperate to show up the Russians even as Congress is threatening to defund the space agency. The Apollo 11 mission to send three astronauts to the Moon is a last, best hope, and no one is more acutely aware of this than stiff-necked, square-jawed launch director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), who is racked with guilt over the deaths of the Apollo 1 crew years earlier.

Enter marketing genius Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson), who we first meet as she shows up a roomful of auto execs with both her knowledge of their vehicles and the way to sell them – all doing this while wearing a fake baby bump no less. Kelly, it seems, is okay with bending the truth to get her message across – a skill that has come to the attention of the government in the person of Moe Berkus (Woody Harrelson), a clandestine fixer-type who, on the orders of the president, wants Kelly to take over public relations for NASA and Apollo 11.

She dutifully heads down to Florida, where she first encounters Cole in a meet-cute in a bar, neither knowing who the other one is until she turns up the next morning at NASA, ready to work. And work she does, nabbing brand sponsorships for the mission from the Tang juice drink (which was actually on Mercury and Gemini missions) and Omega watches, while getting Congressional money flowing again.

She also hires actors to do TV interviews pretending to be the more camera-shy and awkward NASA employees, including Cole’s right hand man Henry Smalls (Ray Romano) and Cole himself. Cole is opposed to all this, of course (“I’m not letting this mission be turned into a commercial”), but eventually comes to admire Kelly’s abilities to get the public’s interest in the mission reignited, while admiring Kelly herself.

Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in 'Fly Me to the Moon'.
(L to R) Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. Photo: Columbia Pictures.

Their flirtation – and everything else about their relationship and the mission – is put to the test, however, when Moe gives Kelly new orders: as a backup plan in case the landing goes awry, she is to produce a staged fake landing. Although she’s dubious, Moe has enough leverage over her about her past that she has to move forward, hiring the director she uses for ads (Jim Rash, doing a kind of Stanley Tucci-on-steroids from ‘The Devil Wears Prada’) and recruiting Moe’s government spooks as actors. Cole is kept completely in the dark – especially when Moe commands that the fake landing will be what the public sees whether the real one is successful or not.

The mechanics of how this will work or not (“I should have hired Kubrick,” says Kelly at one point, a knowing in-joke about the legendary director’s alleged participation in just such a scam) make up both the screwball and conspiracy thriller portions of the film, swinging wildly in tone but perhaps offering up the funniest material. Then there’s the rom-com aspects, which don’t provide Johansson and Tatum with enough room to build any real chemistry, pushing them together more because the script demands it.

Finally, there’s the historical drama. A lot of this film stretches what little truth is in it to the breaking point, but it still feels like the story Berlanti really wants to tell. The pressure, determination, and sheer scale of the Apollo 11 mission are well-captured, along with sweeping, even awe-inspiring shots of the rocket and the launch gantry both before and after the powerful launch sequence.

This is the part of the film that works best, that we wanted more of. But ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ is programmed very much to entertain us from all angles, and the script by Rose Gilroy shoves four different movies into the film’s (far too long) 132 minutes even if the other narratives are not as solidly satisfying. It’s a lot of movie, and we can feel it trying to be greater than it is, but it doesn’t always get there.

    The Cast

Woody Harrelson, Scarlett Johansson and Jim Rash in 'Fly Me to the Moon'.
(L to R) Woody Harrelson, Scarlett Johansson and Jim Rash in ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. Photo: Columbia Pictures.

Scarlett Johansson cuts a ravishing, commanding figure in her tight skirts and ‘60s hair, and her Kelly Jones is a more complex character than the movie initially allows her to be. But she successfully pulls back Kelly’s layers, showing us both her fearlessness and agency, while also hinting at a darker past that has blurred the lines between truth and fiction both in real life and in what she does for a living. She has the most resonant emotional arc and it looks like the actor is having a ball throughout the film.

We wish we could say the same about Channing Tatum, but we don’t know if it’s the way his Cole Davis is scripted or that he might not be the best fit for the part. For reasons unexplained, Davis is the only NASA employee who doesn’t wear a button-down shirt and tie; even though he’s supposed to be kind of a nerdy, socially awkward scientist, he’s still in the body of hunky Channing Tatum. The character either comes off as brooding or pissed-off; we don’t remember seeing him crack more than a hairline smile. The initial parallel between Cole and Kelly – both of them loners who live for their work – is nicely handled, but he doesn’t develop the spark from there to match Johansson’s natural allure.

The scene-stealers are Woody Harrelson as Moe Berkus and Jim Rash as director Lance Vespertine. Harrelson plays Berkus with both an air of menace and his own personal brand of kooky conspiracy-theorist energy; when Kelly asks Moe if aliens have landed on Earth (after he hints at such), he intones ominously, “They walk among us.” As for Rash, his Lance fires off demands, insults, and biting observations at a steady, sarcastic clip, treating everyone as his subjects despite his lack of any notable filmmaking credits. When one fake astronaut blows a rehearsal and dangles helplessly from a wire, Lance scolds hilariously, “I’m just going to leave you there to think about what you did.” Rash and Harrelson easily get the biggest laughs — along with the cat, whose part in all this we’ll leave undisclosed.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. Photo: Columbia Pictures.

It seems to us that the marketing for ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ has been somewhat misleading, emphasizing the rom-com aspects of the movie over the more compelling space-race drama and the funnier (if way more far-fetched and barely believable) conspiracy hijinks.

Moviegoers coming to see a snappy, sexy romantic joust between Johansson and Tatum may be a bit disappointed – although they may also be pleasantly surprised by just how gripping the space drama can be. ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ does feel too long at times and doesn’t always juggle its many narrative strands well, but it does do its best to entertain – and when it works, it lifts off and soars.

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

What is the plot of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’?

As the U.S. races to get to the Moon before the Russians in the 1960s, marketing specialist Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) clashes with Apollo 11 mission director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) over how to rebuild the space agency’s image. As a romance also sparks between the two, the government secretly tasks Jones with staging a fake “Moon landing” in case the real one fails.

It might seem right now that every casting news story is either about Rian Johnson’s newKnives Out’ movie or the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong to think that.

Currently it’s the turn of the ‘Jurassic’ franchise, which is nearing a June shoot and has already scooped up Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Rupert Friend and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo into its mighty casting maw.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that ‘Green Book’ Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is making a deal to join them.

Perhaps the biggest question on our minds is what this means for Marvel’s ‘Blade’, to which Ali has been attached to star for a couple of years now, but given all the delays on the vampire story, we figure he’s filling time while he waits for it to be ready.

Universal is mostly keeping the details of the new movie trapped behind electric fences and concrete barriers for now. What can we predict? Big-toothed beasts causing trouble for the humans that foolishly interact with them.

A bigger question, though, is which humans… It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

From the sounds of it, this new movie would take the franchise in a fresh new direction, so we’re also not predicting (for now) the return of ‘Jurassic Park’ trio Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Jeff Goldblum’s chaotician Malcolm.

Ali might be in talks, but certainly seems to be close to locked in. Unlike Dev Patel and Colman Domingo, who have both appeared on rumor sites connected with the movie. Domingo was mentioned as the potential human antagonist of the new ‘Jurassic’ outing, but we could certainly see Ali taking that role.

With production now so close, we’ll have to wait and see if either of them actually materializes as cast members.

Gareth Edwards, who last made ‘The Creator’, was picked to direct after ‘The Fall Guy’s David Leitch was briefly in talks only to step away over a perceived lack of creative control and the fast turnaround planned for this one (see the release date details below).

David Koepp, who wrote both the 1993 classic ‘Jurassic Park’ (directed by Steven Spielberg) and its 1997 sequel, ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (also directed by Spielberg, to less critical praise, but still healthy box office), crafted the new movie’s screenplay.

Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far. And of course, Spielberg will weigh in since he helped birth the franchise.

When will the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie be in theaters?

Universal has already set a July 2nd, 2025, release slot for the new movie, which means it’ll have to show velociraptor speed to get finished in time.

With the cameras due to roll in London next month, there is a hive of activity around the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie –– or whatever it ends up being titled.

Casting is a big part of that, and the movie is beginning to gather the ensemble of people it needs to dodge death by dino (or not, depending on their fate).

The latest to take their chances on the new movie is Rupert Friend, who will join the cast ahead of production kicking off.

Universal is mostly keeping the details of the new movie quiet for now. But we can at least predict big-toothed beasts causing trouble for the humans that foolishly interact with them.

It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

Friend is the latest addition to the cast, which already includes Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.

You’ll likely have seen Friend in Wes Anderson’s most recent work –– ‘Asteroid City’ on the big screen and his Netflix Roald Dahl shorts on TV. He also appeared as The Grand Inquisitor in ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’ on Disney+.

Anyone who watches Netflix’s series adaptation of ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ knows that Manuel Garcia-Rulfo has proved –– at least as main character Mickey Haller –– can figure his way around a legal scrap.

But he’s going to need more than a firm grasp on the principles of prima facia to tackle his next challenge: he’s now joining Scarlett Johansson and ‘Bridgerton’ veteran Jonathan Bailey in the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie.

If we’re honest, a fast Lincoln might be more help against hungry dinosaurs. Beyond his casting though, Deadline had no details on his role.

While Garcia-Rulfo joins Johansson and Bailey on the “confirmed” list, there have been other potential pieces of casting, though they remain in the rumor-sphere.

Among them? Dev Patel, who recently made a strong directorial debut with ‘Monkey Man’ (which Universal picked up to distribute when Netflix left it in limbo) and Colman Domingo, who was up for awards for ‘Rustin’ (and just appeared in Universal’s ‘Drive-Away Dolls’).

It remains to be seen if either of them graduates from the world of rumors to reality.

Now that it has a director in place –– ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’/‘The Creator’s Gareth Edwards –– and a star ready to take her chances hanging out with giant reptilian beasties (Scarlett Johansson), the pieces are starting to fall into place for the next iteration of the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise.

Universal, according to Deadline, now has ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Fellow Travelers’ actor Jonathan Bailey in talks to join Johansson in the movie.

Bailey, of course, is already aboard a big film (or two) that Universal is pinning its hopes on: he’s starring as Fiyero in the two-part adaptation of ‘Wicked’ that will launch this Thanksgiving.

While Johansson is locked in and Bailey appears close to a deal, there are other actors whose names have been floated as potentials. Scooper Daniel Richtman has pointed to Dev Patel possibly taking on a role (his directorial debut, ‘Monkey Man’, produced by Jordan Peele, was picked up for distribution and released by Universal a couple of weeks ago).

And Richtman has also mentioned that Colman Domingo, of ‘Rustin’, ‘The Color Purple’ and –– the Universal connection –– ‘Drive-Away Dolls’, is being talked about as the movie’s villain. The human one, of course.

It remains to be seen if either of them graduates from the world of rumors to reality.
