Disney has confirmed ‘The Simpsons Movie’ sequel will arrive in 2027.
The studio offered no other details.
This new movie has been in development for a few years.
Despite the series’ enduring lifespan –– ‘The Simpsons’ premiered its 37th season this past year, having debuted all the way back in 1989 –– 2027 seems less like striking while the iron is hot and more waiting until it is practically ice cold to the touch in terms of following up the show’s cinematic debut, ‘The Simpsons Movie‘.
Still, that’s not bothering Disney, which has scheduled a July 2027 release (20 years on from the first, in fact), for what is currently without a formal title.

The 2007 entry saw the Environmental Protection Agency encasing the Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield in a dome after Homer taints the area’s water supply.
It also introduced the world to Spider-Pig, AKA Plopper.
What will happen in the new movie?

Disney and the ‘Simpsons’ team are staying quiet about the story in the new movie, but we can figure it’ll feature more silly adventures for the titular family and the wider world of Springfield.
“The first ‘Simpsons Movie’ almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do ‘The Simpsons Movie,’ so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for ‘The Simpsons’ TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”
When will ‘The Simpsons Movie’ sequel be in theaters?
Per Disney’s announcement, the new movie is scheduled to take over the spot previously filled by an untitled Marvel movie: July 23rd, 2027 (was the Marvel movie ‘Blade’? Enquiring minds want to know and also sigh).
Right now the main competition is a Warners animated musical called ‘Bad Fairies’. Will one blink and shift dates? Watch this space…

Marvel made some serious waves at Comic-Con over the weekend, announcing a huge slate of new projects that will take the MCU through Phase Four and into Phase Five. Among the buzziest was “Blade,” which will be rebooted with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali in the title role. But what does the former Daywalker, Wesley Snipes, think of being replaced?
It turns out that Snipes is actually “all good” with the news, revealing in a new statement that he was “surprised” by Marvel’s decision, but is happy to have the “beautiful and talented” Ali follow in his footsteps. The actor also saved a special shout-out for his fans, saying that their “incredible outpouring of love is overwhelming.”
Snipes’s full statement said:
“To all the DAYWALKERS losing their minds right now, chillaaxx,” he said in a statement provided to EW by his rep. “Although the news comes as a surprise, it’s ALL GOOD. Such is the ‘business’ of ‘entertainment!’ Much peace to the MCU crew – always a fan. Honor and respect to the grandmaster Stan. Congratulations and Salaam to Mahershala Ali, a beautiful and talented artist whose expressions I look forward to experiencing for many years to come. Inshallah, we will someday work together. Most importantly to my loyal fans, the incredible outpouring of love is overwhelming. I am grateful for the never-ending support. So, ‘nah fret nah worry, it’s not de end of de story.’ Welcome to the Daywalker Klique.”
Ali’s casting comes nearly 15 years after the release of the last “Blade” flick, 2004’s “Blade: Trinity,” which co-starred Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel. As recently as 2016, Snipes had been hopeful that a fourth “Blade” feature would be made, though that project never materialized.
In an interview with Fandango, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that Ali himself approached the studio to pitch himself as the new Blade. The acclaimed actor received an immediate yes, according to the exec.
It’s not entirely clear yet when “Blade” is expected to hit theaters, though Feige told Collider that the flick will be part of Phase Five, not Phase Four, pegging it for release sometime in 2022. Stay tuned to see if it sticks to that schedule.
The surprise announcement at Comic-Con that Natalie Portman will return for “Thor: Love and Thunder” and become the “female Thor” may have come out of the blue for fans, but it’s been in the works for some time.
Despite reports that Portman was totally done with the “Thor” movies, Marvel boss Kevin Feige revealed to Entertainment Tonight that the relationship never ended.
“She’s amazing, she’s always stayed in contact with us,” he said.
The Oscar winner played astrophysicist Jane Foster in the first two “Thor” movies, but did not appear in “Ragnarok.” Chris Hemsworth’s Thor alluded to their romance ending.
Portman’s supposed aversion to continuing in the MCU seemed to be disproved when she made a voice cameo in “Avengers: Endgame” (though footage of her was used from “Thor: The Dark World”). She also showed up at the “Endgame” world premiere red carpet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Portman cemented the deal to return for “Thor 4” six months ago. But director Taika Waititi came up with the idea way back while filming “Thor: Ragnarok.”
“One of the ideas, and perhaps the biggest, was the idea of Jane,” Feige said. “We set Natalie and Taika up and in one meeting she agreed to do it.”
The long-awaited sequel to “The Simpsons Movie” is still in the works — even though Disney now owns the property.
Last year, there were reports that 20 Century Fox was developing a sequel to the 2007 film, which brought Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie to the big screen. Then, Disney bought 20th Century Fox (a transaction that was foretold by “The Simpsons” in 1998, by the way) and the project was up in the air.
But “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening confirmed at Comic-Con last weekend that the sequel is still a go.
“No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money,” he said.
In the first movie, Springfield was quarantined under a glass dome after Homer accidentally polluted the town’s lake. “The Simpsons Movie” was a hit, earning more than $527 million worldwide.
We’ve wondered why a sequel wasn’t made sooner, but Groening has been candid in the years since about the production problems with the movie.
“The first ‘Simpsons Movie’ almost killed us,” he said. “We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do ‘The Simpsons Movie,’ so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for ‘The Simpsons’ TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”
“The Simpsons” has already been renewed by Fox for Season 31 and Season 32. It is the longest-running sitcom in TV history.
“Riverdale’s” tribute to the late Luke Perry will feature a very special guest.
The Season 4 episode, which is scheduled to air October 9 on The CW, has enlisted Perry’s friend and former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star Shannen Doherty. Titled “In Memoriam,” it will reflect on Perry’s legacy and the imprint his character, Fred Andrews, had on the show.
Perry died in March at the age of 52 after suffering a major stroke.
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the news at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday. He described Doherty’s role as “very emotional.”
Perry and Doherty starred together on “90210” for four seasons. They renewed their friendship in 2015 when both were dealing with health issues.
Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed that he and Perry had been planning an appearance by Doherty for some time. It was “something that Luke wanted to happen since Season 1,” he said.
“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said yes. It’s very impactful.”
Doherty is also starring in “BH90210,” Fox’s meta revival of the series. Most of the original cast — Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling — will play versions of themselves as they try to mount a revival of the teen soap.
Perry was not attached to the project, which was announced just before he died. “BH90210” will also honor Perry in some way.
Seth MacFarlane’s space comedy “The Orville” is going through a wormhole from Fox to Hulu.
At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, MacFarlane announced that the series — which he created, writes, and stars in — will blast off to a new home for Season 3.
“The Orville” was slated for a midseason premiere on Fox, but production demands seemingly made that impossible.
“As the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network,” MacFarlane said in a statement. “So, we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show.”
“The Orville” is produced by 20th Century Fox Television, which is now owned by Disney. The company now has controlling interest in Hulu. This could be a matter of MacFarlane distancing himself from the network Fox (which is now a separate entity) and/or Disney wanting to keep their properties in-house.
The show is set four centuries in the future, and follows Captain Ed Mercer and his crew as they explore new planets and undertake diplomatic missions. Season 3 will debut on Hulu in late 2020, a year and a half after Season 2 aired.
Everything goes to hell in the trailer for the fourth and final season of “Preacher.”
AMC debuted the trailer at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. As the series inches closer to the finale, God’s endgame for the universe begins to click into place.
Jesse (Dominic Cooper) and Tulip (Ruth Negga) set out to rescue Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), who’s been captured by the Grail.
Trapped between heavenly prophecies, hellish prisons, and all-out nuclear war, the trio must make their bloody way to the Most High. Whether they can reach God in time — or whether all this carnage is part of His divine plan — will be revealed as “Preacher” barrels towards the end of the world.
“Preacher” Season 4 premieres Sunday, August 4 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
The “Snowpiercer” train is finally on track and ready to leave the station.
At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, TBS unveiled the first trailer for the reboot/adaptation of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic 2013 film.
The series has been in the works for four years and has experienced delays, showrunner swaps, and even a network move (from TNT to TBS).
The trailer shows that, much like the movie, “Snowpiercer” follows the passengers of the perpetually-moving titular train, which carries the remnants of humanity seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. On the train, the 3,000 surviving souls have stratified into distinct classes — but an uprising is brewing.
Jennifer Connelly stars as a first class passenger who serves as the Voice of the train, making announcements. Daveed Diggs plays a “tailie,” who lives in poor conditions at the back of the train. Alison Wright, Lena Hall, and Steven Ogg also star.
“Snowpiercer” is slated to premiere on TBS in spring 2020.
A new full-length trailer for “Star Trek: Picard” debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and it was full of surprises. The series, which follows Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in retirement, will feature two characters from past series. Jean-Luc Picard’s “dead” crew member Data (Brent Spiner) as well as “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) appear.
The latter shows up to Picard’s vineyard, where the venerated Enterprise captain has retired from Starfleet. “What the hell are you doing out here, Picard?” she asks. “Saving the galaxy?”
Isn’t that what he does? The trailer lays out more of the story we can expect from the season. Picard meets a young woman with special powers who comes to him for help. So he does what he’s good at: assembles a new crew (including Michelle Hurt and Santiago Cabrera) and returns to space.
As for Data, we see his disassembled body. But at the very end of the trailer, we see Picard playing chess with … Data.
“I don’t want the game to end,” Picard says.
“I can see that, Captain,” Data replies.
During the panel, showrunner Michael Cabon revealed more familiar faces will be popping up — including Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker and Mirina Sirtis as Deanna Troi.
“Star Trek: Picard” is set to premiere on CBS All-Access in 2020.
