  • Netflix Makes a Savage Joke About the ‘Roseanne’ Cancellation

Some might say it’s too soon to joke about the “Roseanne” cancellation, but those people don’t run the Netflix Twitter account.

Like the rest of pop culture-loving America, Netflix employees witnessed the controversy Roseanne Barr inspired with a series of offensive tweets on Tuesday, including a racist post targeting former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett that ultimately led ABC to cancel the revived series. While many fans were mourning the loss of the show, at least one person at Netflix saw an opportunity.

“Reminder: @OneDayAtATime is a sitcom about a tight-knit, working class family that tackles extremely topical social issues in a smart and innovative way,” came a tweet from Netflix. “Ya know, if you’re suddenly looking for a show like that…”

Yep, Netflix went there. The streamer’s savage joke clearly alludes to the cancellation while managing to promote a Netflix original. It’s harsh considering the many jobs that were lost, but it does make a good point. The truth is, many people out there probably are looking for such a show now, and “One Day at a Time” is streaming on Netflix now, whereas even “Roseanne” reruns have been pulled from multiple outlets.

  • ‘Roseanne’ Reruns Pulled From Hulu, Multiple Networks Amid Controversy

ABC isn’t the only network that doesn’t want to be associated with “Roseanne” after its titular star’s recent Twitter controversy.

Roseanne Barr sparked outrage on Tuesday morning with her racist remarks about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, among other offensive comments. Shortly thereafter, ABC canceled the revived sitcom, making it clear that the network considers Barr’s comments “abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with [its] values.” Now, in the wake of ABC’s announcement, “Roseanne” reruns are also being pulled from Viacom cable networks, Laff, and Hulu, as Deadline reports.

The sitcom had been garnering big ratings on ABC, and it was expected to be renewed for its 11th season prior to the cancellation. Outlets took it a step further by opting not to air reruns. They, like ABC, have shown that they don’t want such views as Barr’s to represent their values.

The situation and the backlash has, however, had some unfortunate collateral damage. The cancellation has put the rest of the “Roseanne” cast — not to mention the crew — out of work. Presumably, the actors will also miss out on residuals now that reruns have been yanked. It’s a situation that hardly seems fair to those not involved in the controversy. As such, fans have been floating solutions, like a spinoff called “Dan,” but so far, the problem remains unsolved.

  • Fans Suggest ABC Go With ‘Roseanne’ Spinoff Called ‘Dan’ or ‘The Conner Family’

“Roseanne” is no more, because of Roseanne. Even Roseanne Barr isn’t defending her actions. (Instead, she’s blaming Ambien.)

    But!

The “Roseanne” revival was ABC’s most popular new show, and it wasn’t just because of Roseanne. What about John Goodman‘s Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf‘s Jackie, both Beckys, etc.?

Some fans suggested ABC split the difference — dump Roseanne, and give the rest of the stars their own spinoff. Punish the right person while not punishing the rest of the “Roseanne” cast and crew or the fans.

Jimmy Kimmel had some fun with the ABC headlines, since “Jimmy Kimmel Live” also airs on the network. He offered a similar suggestion, saying “Roseanne” should just dump Roseanne and change its title to “Dan”:

It sounds like ABC is seriously exploring spinoff/new show options, but there’s a downside. Here’s some context from Entertainment Weekly:

“Here’s the challenge, though: Roseanne was created by Roseanne Barr. The characters were conceived by her and Matt Williams. If the sitcom were to continue without the matriarch, the actress would still benefit financially. So a key insider informs EW that discussions will continue today on whether it makes sense to keep the other actors but potentially design a new series around them — ergo, the Bonners, or whatever you want to call Goodman, Metcalf, and the clan of misfits.”

Other shows (including “Lucifer”) are already hoping to benefit from the “Roseanne” loss. We’ll have to watch that 2018-2019 schedule space to see what ABC does.

If you have ideas, say them loud and proud now while the execs are still probably in meetings about what to do.

  • ‘Lucifer’ Fans & Others Try to Slide Into ABC’s ‘Roseanne’ Opening

Let’s play Fill That Slot! Yes, it sounds dirty. But dirty fits right about now.

ABC just canceled “Roseanne,” the highest-rated and most watched freshman series of the 2017-2018 TV season. So that means there’s an opening. And so many canceled shows are hoping to be plucked from the masses to fill it.

“Roseanne” had a solid Tuesday night timeslot, so it’s possible ABC will give that spot to one of its popular existing shows or pilots, either pulling one from midseason or otherwise. But even if they fill the Tuesday primetime spot from in-house, that still leaves an opening on another day/time or midseason.

    Enter … “Lucifer”?

Maybe. Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot, so Lucifans used the “Roseanne” cancellation on Tuesday to make their case to ABC.

Funny to think of a show called “Lucifer” as the less problematic option, but there you have it.

Just last night, Fox aired its two “bonus” episodes of “Lucifer,” which didn’t light up the ratings but they did get the show trending on Twitter with 341,000 tweets.

Fox had canceled “Lucifer” from a “ratings-based decision,” so ABC wouldn’t be making an even trade to get “Lucifer” for “Roseanne.” But the fact that ABC was willing to part with such a cash cow shows they do care about more than just money. And the fans who do watch “Lucifer” are devoted, and would be grateful to their savior.

If ABC isn’t interested, there’s still hope that “Lucifer” has another taker; the stars have talked about conversations with various networks. It’s not over till they say it’s over.

A few other past TV show stars also spoke up after ABC canceled “Roseanne,” pointing out that they’re available, too:

If not “Lucifer,” yes to “Pushing Daisies,” please. The wonderfully quirky romance dramedy aired two seasons on ABC from 2007 to 2009 and the cast and fans have been pushing for a comeback ever since.

“Enlisted” only got one season on Fox, and since Fox just picked up ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” maybe ABC would make a trade?

Zach Braff is fresh off “Alex, Inc.,” which only lasted one season on ABC. His hit comedy “Scrubs” started out on NBC before ABC saved it for Season 8 and Season 9.

ABC will replace “Roseanne” with something on Tuesday nights this fall. Stay tuned…

  • ‘Roseanne’ Canceled by ABC After Star’s Racist Tweet

In a stunning move, ABC has canceled hit revival series “Roseanne” following a racist tweet from its titular star.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey released a statement announcing the swift, surprising news Tuesday afternoon, saying:

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

The cancellation comes on the heels of a tweet sent out by star Roseanne Barr on Tuesday morning, in which she made racist comments about a former Obama administration adviser, Valerie Jarrett, referencing the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes.” Barr deleted the tweet soon after posting it, and issued an apology, calling her remarks “a bad joke.”

But many weren’t laughing, including producer Wanda Sykes, who announced that she was leaving the sitcom in protest of Barr’s statements.

“Roseanne” costar Sara Gilbert also issued a response on Twitter, saying that Barr’s remarks were “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”

They weren’t alone. Barr’s comments ignited a social media firestorm, with many calling on ABC to fire Barr and cancel the series. It didn’t take long for the network to do just that.

The revival of “Roseanne” drew enormous ratings when it premiered on ABC earlier this year, making its renewal for season 11 a seeming no-brainer for the network. Looks like ABC has some rethinking to do this fall.

  • Wanda Sykes Quits ‘Roseanne’ After Roseanne Barr’s Racist Tweet

29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - Arrivals“Roseanne” after the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, posted a racist tweet about former presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett.

Sykes announced her decision to leave the hit ABC sitcom on Twitter:

The move comes after Barr sparked outrage by tweeting a racially-charged remark about Jarrett, former advisor to President Barack Obama, that referenced “Planet of the Apes” and the Muslim Brotherhood.

After coming under fire, Barr apologized, saying it was a bad joke, and also indicated she would delete her Twitter account:

Many are calling for ABC to cancel the show and stop giving Barr a platform for her views:

Sykes’ departure would be the second major exit from the show’s staff; last week, Whitney Cummings stepped down as co-showrunner, citing scheduling conflicts.

(ABC/Adam Rose)SARA GILBERT, ROSEANNE BARR, JOHN GOODMANThe hit “Roseanne” revival is losing one of its leaders. Whitney Cummings is exiting as co-showrunner; Bruce Helford will take on the job solo in Season 11.

Helford told reporters the changed was spurred by Cummings’ schedule.

“I think Whitney is going to be too busy,” he said. “Whitney is always a member of the family of the show but she’s got so much going on. I don’t know how she had time to work on the show in the first place. I don’t think she’ll be able to join us in the capacity she was joining us in this first season.”

In March, Cummings told TV Line she’d come on board the revival because of Donald Trump.

“I was looking for a way to be of service after the [presidential] election, and I didn’t know how,” she said. “So I thought, ‘Maybe [working] on a show where the lead character voted for Trump is how I can get into the living rooms of the people who did vote for him.”

“Roseanne” is adding several new writers to its staff ahead of Season 11, which will run for 13 episodes starting this fall.

“We have a lot of new voices, younger voices, which I think is important on the show,” Helford said. “I’ll be showrunning next season. We run a democratic room, almost nobody has a stronger voice than anybody else; everybody’s input is there. I’m excited because there are a lot of new voices and because I believe we’ve got the best of the voices who have been part of it continuing.”

  • Fox Exec Explains How ‘Roseanne’ Led to ‘Last Man Standing’ Save

It took a year, but “Last Man Standing” fans finally saw their beloved sitcom get new life when Fox renewed it Friday. Funnily enough, they sort of have ABC — the network that canceled the Tim Allen sitcom in the first place — to thank.

Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO Dana Walden spoke to reporters via phone Monday, according to “Roseanne.” She credited the revived ABC comedy with being a factor in Fox’s decision. It seems “Roseanne” reminded the network’s execs of the power of a popular comedian.

“Obviously I think everyone took a good hard look at the performance of ‘Roseanne,’” she said.It did so well and it certainly did remind us that we have a huge iconic comedy star in our Fox family in Tim Allen.”

That said, Walden wanted to clarify that Fox’s interest in saving “Last Man Standing” didn’t stem solely from “Roseanne.” The network looked into saving the sitcom shortly after ABC canceled it last May, well before the ABC revival premiered this March. According to Walden, she and other execs “always felt like ABC didn’t really prioritize ‘Last Man Standing’” and “wondered how it would do if it was given a better opportunity.”

Fox has been in contact with Allen over the course of the past year and now plans to give his show that opportunity. The decision did come at the expense of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” but now that NBC has saved the latter, it seems most viewers have come away happy.

  • Fox Defends Canceling ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ & ‘Lucifer’; NBC Explains Saving B99

Fox also explained why it saved “Last Man Standing.”

These past couple of weeks have been sheer madness on the TV schedule front. Canceled, renewed, saved, on the bubble. One of the biggest headlines last week was Fox dumping “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” only for NBC to pick it up just one day later.

NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt explained why they so quickly saved the show (via EW):

“Brooklyn is a show our company produces for Fox, so it’s a show that’s very close to us. I’ve been saying to certain people in the press that if we knew Andy Samberg was going to be cast in that show, we never would have sold it to Fox. We’ve been watching it closely ever since. … We jumped on it really quickly and are thrilled to have it and think it fits into our brand of comedy in many ways better than it fit into Fox’s brand of comedy. It feels like it goes along shows like A.P. Bio, Will & Grace, Superstore, and The Good Place. … It’s also one of the few comedies in recent years that does a robust international number, and it has a syndication upside, which a lot of shows don’t have anymore.”

Greenblatt said it was great to see that the fans were as outraged as they were by Fox’s B99 cancellation. But it sounds like the fan push to renew the show wasn’t really a big factor for NBC, since they were already on the same page.

However, he added, “We love when fans yell and scream on Twitter, but we hope that transfers and they watch the show.” Yeah, don’t forget to watch the show. Hopefully NBC just puts it on at one specific day and time and doesn’t move it around. Fox didn’t seem to know what to do with it.

Speaking of Fox, the network revealed its Fall 2018-2019 schedule on Monday. Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEO Dana Walden answered why they canceled “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”:

“It was based on a variety of factors. We love this show, those are great creators, it’s a phenomenal cast. We ordered it throughout five seasons. It’s a great length of time for a single-camera comedy. Ultimately we felt like we didn’t have the exact right place to schedule it this year. It performed best in our Sunday night lineup. We wanted to give Bob’s Burgers an opportunity to have a plum time period and really grow. It really limited the opportunities to schedule Brooklyn. With Thursday Night Football, there were two fewer hours to program. We were trying to create a more cohesive program, and scheduling Brooklyn would prevent us from promoting something new. Ultimately we decided we just didn’t have room for it and were trying we’re really happy its found a new home.”

LAST MAN STANDING - "Heavy Meddle" - When Eve's boyfriend, Rob (guest star Travis Tope), doesn't invite her to his parents' anniversary party, Vanessa feels that Eve should tell him how this makes her feel. But Mike disagrees and thinks it's better for Eve to not say anything. Meanwhile, Kristin and Ryan think it's beyond the airy Mandy and Kyle to find the hidden clues in an escape room, on "Last Man Standing," airing FRIDAY, MARCH 17 (8:00-8:31 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. (Eric McCandless/ABC via Getty Images)NANCY TRAVIS, TIM ALLENWalden also addressed picking up ABC’s canceled “Last Man Standing,” sort of tying it to the success of “Roseanne” but also emphasizing that they were interested even before that revival:

“Obviously I think everyone took a good hard look at the performance of Roseanne. It did so well and it certainly did remind us that we have a huge iconic comedy star in our fox family in Tim Allen. We tried to move Last Man Standing over last year when ABC decided not to move forward. It’s a really funny show. It had nothing to do with Roseanne that we were interested in the first place. We always felt like ABC didn’t really prioritize Last Man Standing. We always wondered how it would do if it was given a better opportunity and prioritized more in terms of a network’s agenda. We were emboldened by Roseanne.”

During Fox’s upfront press call on Monday, execs were also asked about canceling “Lucifer.”

Fox chairman Gary Newman said that was “a ratings-based decision; we had very a successful late year with all four new dramas renewed. We felt like performance-wise, we needed to make that change.”

So, in business-speak, it’s great that passionate fans got #SaveLucifer trending, but there weren’t enough of those fans for the show to stay on the schedule for a fourth season.

  • ‘Roseanne’ Fans Are Both Happy and Sad About David’s Brief Return

“Roseanne” had fans in tears on Tuesday night, and it wasn’t because they were laughing so hard.

The episode brought back two more actors from the original series, Johnny Galecki as David and Estelle Parsons as Bev. While Bev’s return was largely comical, David’s was much more complicated and had fans feeling, well, pretty much all the feels.

With Galecki tied up with “The Big Bang Theory” for at least one more season, he wasn’t available to be a regular in the current season of the “Roseanne” revival. He did want to be involved, though, and the writers found a way to make it happen. Unfortunately for fans, saying hello to him again meant saying goodbye again, too.

“Roseanne” Season 10, Episode 5 spoilers ahead!

Tuesday’s episode marked the birthday of Harris (Emma Kenney), Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and David’s daughter. That made it the perfect occasion for the absent character to return. David showed up at the Conner family’s door, thrilling fans who felt the show just wasn’t complete without him. However, after having taken off to do humanitarian work, he wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms; David had to answer for what he did to Darlene and his family.

The long-time loves did temporary reunite, but, of course, it couldn’t be that easy. Their renewed relationship quickly ended after her family reminded her of how complicated the relationship had been. She decided it was better for her kids if they didn’t get back together, crushing the hopes of many fans. However, David announced plans to move back regardless, thus reigniting those very same dashed hopes.

It was a lot to deal with, and fans needed an outlet. Their range of reactions were all over Twitter, with some fans celebrating the reunion.

Meanwhile, others were sad to see Darlene’s break it off with her estranged husband, and some couldn’t get over the fact that he had taken off in the first place.

Dismayed as many were, plenty are still hopeful that he’ll return in the future.

It definitely does seem like there could be room for Galecki to reprise his role in a larger capacity at some point, and with “Roseanne” as popular as it is right now, maybe the sitcom will still be going whenever “The Big Bang Theory” ends.

“Roseanne” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
