Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Eric Dane about his work on ‘One Fast Movie,’ his first reaction to the screenplay, his love for motorcycles and shooting those sequences, working with KJ Apa and Edward James Olmos, their characters relationships, and collaborating with writer and director Kelly Blatz.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Dane, KJ Apa, Edward James Olmos and director Kelly Blatz.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and why you wanted to play this character?

Eric Dane: I thought the story tracked well. I loved the world that the story took place in, and the writing was good. Now, playing a father in a father and son story with these dynamics is I think interesting for any actor. I think anybody would’ve jumped at this. There’s a lot of meat on the bone.

MF: Are you a motorcycle guy? What was it like shooting the motorcycle sequences and what kind of training did you do?

ED: I didn’t need to do any. I am a motorcycle guy. That said, what they asked us to do wasn’t that demanding. The insurance company’s not letting us race around a track, nor could I do that. We had highly skilled professionals for that, who did a fantastic job. But yeah, I did all the riding I needed to do.

MF: Can you talk about Wes and Dean’s father and son relationship and what they are both hoping to get out of their unlikely partnership?

ED: Wes and Dean, I think what they’re trying to get out of it is I believe Dean would probably like to have some of that, not that guilt because I don’t think he even acknowledges it, but I think he would like to have that wound healed a little bit. Maybe alleviate some of that guilt for walking out on his mother and him. I think what Wes wants is a mentor. It doesn’t have to be his father, but he wants a mentor, he wants a father figure in his life. Biological or not, he wants a father figure in his life to offer him some guidance.

MF: What was it like working on that relationship with KJ Apa?

ED: I love KJ. KJ was super fun to work with. We became fast friends. We still are very close. I think it helped with some of the work, that we did have such a profoundly close relationship quickly, and we did a lot of work off camera to make sure that the dynamics were as accurate as we could possibly make them.

Edward James Olmos in 'One Fast Move'.
Edward James Olmos in ‘One Fast Move’.

MF: Speaking of father and son relationships, Dean also has that dynamic with Abel. Can you talk about that and working with the great Edward James Olmos?

ED: Well, essentially you have three generations of misfits. You have Wes, you have Dean, and you have Abel, who is a father figure to me, just like I end up being a father figure to my actual biological son, Wes. But working with Edward James Olmos is like, he’s a master craftsman who has turned in some of the great performances in our lifetimes. So, it’s always fun to work with people who are that good. You always want to feel like you’re punching above your weight, right? But it’s also like there’s moments when you’re like, “Wow, that’s Edward James Olmos.” You’re acting with the guy, and at the same time you’re like, “I know that dude. I’ve seen that dude.” You know what I’m saying?

MF: Finally, what was it like collaborating with Kelly Blatz on set as a director?

ED: He was brilliant. He knew exactly what he wanted, and he also knew when to stay away from the actors and when to intervene. He has unbelievable instincts, and I can’t wait to work with him again.

  • Comic-Con 2024: ‘The Penguin’ Panel

    IKvqh5GK

    Preview:

    • ‘The Penguin’ had new footage to show at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event.
    • Star Colin Farrell and executive producer/‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves were among those attending (Farrell via video).
    • The show is a spin-off of 2022’s ‘The Batman’.

The Penguin’ might not have had the most promising start at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, making headlines after an immersive “activation” event based on a nightclub from the HBO series for press and the cast was evacuated on Friday night when a fire broke out. No one was hurt, but the big question, of course –– did anyone check to see whether a cowled individual was involved, and were they carrying a Bat Fire Kit?

Regardless, some of the creative team, including ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves (who is a producer on the show), actors Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, showrunner Lauren LeFranc and producer and Dylan Clark –– plus star Colin Farrell, live via video link from Macau, showed up on Saturday afternoon at its panel in Hall H to talk up the show, which continues the story of Farrell’s criminal schemer Oz Cobb from ‘The Batman.’

What’s the story of ‘The Penguin’?

Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobb in Max’s ‘The Penguin.’ Photo: Courtesy of Max.

The series, which has been described as in the style of classic crime drama ‘Scarface’, will pick up the story of Farrell’s character as he rises to power in Gotham City. Mild spoiler alert in case you’ve yet to see ‘The Batman’, but part of the movie’s plot involves Oz’s bosses either dying or heading to jail, leaving him a path to achieve his aims.

Yet given that there’s a whole series to fill with this story, we doubt the road will be an easy one. And there’s still that pesky Caped Crusader lurking around (even if Batman likely wouldn’t appear much if at all in the show).

Farrell’s character will face off against other notorious Gotham crime bosses, including Salvatore Moroni, played by Clancy Brown.

One of Carmine Falcone’s chief rivals, he’ll be back on the streets for the series and ready to make his move now that he’s no longer at the mercy of Falcone (who, again spoiler alert, died in ‘The Batman’).

The Cast also includes Milioti as Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone, with Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Kelly, Dierdre O’Connell, Michael Zegen, Feliz and Theo Rossi rounding out the main cast.

What did we learn from ‘The Penguin’ panel?

Cristin Milioti in Max's 'The Penguin.'

According to Reeves, Farrell’s Cobb was going to be a focus of the movie sequel to ‘The Batman’ (which the filmmaker is busy writing), but HBO bosses asked for a marquee character for the first spin-off show, and so the decision was made to use the series to bridge between the two movies and explore more about his rise to power.

Farrell reveals he was hesitant to take on the role for the first movie but was convinced by Reeves and especially delighted by the look of the character, keying in how to play the role and his background from the first sculpt he was shown.

For her part, showrunner LeFranc said her take on the character’s story was inspired by a corrupt mayor in Rhode Island, who was nevertheless hailed as a pillar of the community for the help he provided to people. She said there are no heroes in this series –– everyone is operating in shades of gray.

Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti in Max's 'The Penguin.'

And LeFranc also talked up the idea that Sofia Falcone in the show is very different from how she’s been portrayed previously in the comics, praising what Milioti brought to the role.

Reeves admitted that ‘The Godfather’s Fredo and Harvey Weinstein were among his inspirations for the character.

Feliz plays Victor Aguilar, a new character created for the show, and one designed to give us a fresh way into Oz’s story through his connection with the wannabe crime boss.

According to the team, Oz and Sophia Falcone mirror each other, but are on two sides of the series and Gotham’s fate is in the balance.

And if you were wondering whether Oz’s story is wrapped up in the limited series, Reeves confirmed that he will in fact be back on the big screen for ‘The Batman – Part II’, which kicks off filming next year ahead of its planned 2026 release.

The news for on-screen Batman –– and particularly The Penguin –– wasn’t limited to the ‘Penguin’ panel, as the presentation for animated series ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ (also produced by Reeves, alongside Batman animation legend Bruce Timm) revealed that Minnie Driver is playing Oswalda Cobblepot, a female take on the character, who will sing in the show.

When will ‘The Penguin’ be on screens?

‘The Penguin’ launches on Max on September 19th.

And before that, ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ will kick off on Prime Video on August 1st.

  • Comic-Con 2024: ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Panel

    Preview:

    • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power held a big panel in Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con.
    • Stars Morfydd Clark and Charlie Vickers were among the panelists.
    • A new trailer was shown.

We don’t have too long to wait now for the return of Prime Video’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ series –– the streaming service’s giant, expensive and ambitious series drawn from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and set thousands of years before the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

The show is back on our screens late next month, and to keep that idea in our collective brains, the show brought a big group of its cast, plus showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, to talk up the series and offer some fresh footage.

Part of the presentation included the new trailer, which you can find above.

What’s the story of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 2?

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' season 2.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ season 2. Credit: Courtesy of Prime Video. Copyright: Amazon MGM Studios.

Here’s the official synopsis for Season 2:

“Sauron (Charlie Vickers) has returned. Cast out by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. The new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.”

The trailer certainly hammers that point home, showing the divisions between certain characters and the unity that will need to be shown if they’re to defeat the threat from Sauron (Vickers), now in elf form, and pushing Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) to create the rings that will entice, control and ultimately endanger the various races.

What did we learn from the ‘Rings of Power’ panel?

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' season 2.

The panel didn’t offer much in the way of giant revelations, though it did include a couple of behind the scenes featurettes looking at the practical effects work behind the forging of the rings (and concept artwork from legendary artist John Howe), and some of the new ‘Rings’ creatures we can expect to see in the show, including wraiths.

Also on the beast front, Shelob the spider will make an experience (or possibly a relative), and there was a glimpse of a balrog.

As the trailer makes clear, the show also shows the first proper look at the Entwives, the female companions of the tree-life Ent creatures.

Here’s what co-showrunner Payne said to expect in Season 2:

“Sauron is afoot. There’s trouble. There’s danger. There’s death and battle.”

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Ismael Cruz Córdova, who plays Silvan Elf Arondir, named his sword “Rihanna”. Just because.

Did we learn any future details about the show?

While the panel’s main section was limited to talking about Season 2, the fan question time did allow for some more forward-looking speculation, including that we can expect to meet pivotal elf Glorfindel later in the series’ run and that the question of Theo’s (Tyroe Muhafidin) biological parentage will be answered… eventually.

    Preview:

    • Colin Firth has been cast in a series about Sherlock Holmes younger days.
    • Hero Fiennes Tiffin is leading the cast, with Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone and Zine Tseng also aboard.
    • Guy Ritchie is producing the series.

If you’re a frustrated fan of Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movie duo (which starred Robert Downey Jr. as the title character and Jude Law as sidekick Doctor Watson), the wait for an oft-talked-about, but not-yet-made third entry still rankles.

So perhaps you’ll be happy to lean that the director has since pivoted in a new ‘Holmes’ direction, setting up a young Sherlock series. The show now counts ‘Kingsman’ veteran Colin Firth among its cast. And no, it has nothing to do with 1985’s Barry Levinson movie about the character’s younger days.

The new show, picked up by Prime Video, will adapt Andy Lane’s ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ book series. Eight books were published between 2010 and 2015, which means plenty of potential storylines.

Lane’s books follow a teenage Holmes in the 1860s and 1870s and are officially described as “the action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”

Here’s what Ritchie had to say when the show was announced:

“In ‘Young Sherlock’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before. We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”

Hero Fiennes Tiffin –– who worked on Ritchie’s most recent movie, ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare‘ –– has landed the lead role as Holmes.

Joseph Fiennes –– yes, Hero’s uncle –– will be Silas Holmes, Sherlock’s father, who is described as a scientist, explorer and self-made businessman. Natascha McElhone will play Cordelia Holmes, his devoted mother, artist and matriarch of the Holmes clan.

Zine Tseng has an unannounced role, while Firth will play a character named Sir Bucephalus Hodge; details on the character have yet to be announced. We’re going to go with either wise mentor or utter cad, and honestly, we’d love to see Firth break bad.

Moviefone: To begin with, Dave, what was it like for you to return to this franchise and work with Chloe again, and how has JJ changes since the first film?

Dave Bautista: Well, first, JJ is in total dad mode. In this film, it’s all about being a dad. His mission in life is to be a good dad. As far as coming back and stepping back into the role, it was just effortless. I knew who the character was. We’ve been friends for so many years now, and so it was very comfortable. There was no anxiety about performance. We were all so comfortable with each other. So, this one, it was just easier. It was effortless. Everything about it was. We shot the first one in the winter in Toronto and this film, we were in the summer in Cape Town and Rome. Everything was bigger and it was better, and it was fun. It was like being on vacation and it was like being on vacation with family. So, it was effortless. And it’s really cool because the kids who fell in love with the first ‘My Spy’, they’ve grown up too. They’ve grown up with Sophie.

MF: Chloe, can you talk about returning for this sequel and working with Dave again, and how has Sophie changed since the last time we saw her?

Chloe Coleman: Sophie is grown up. She’s a teenager now, which is kind of crazy to think about. I think it was bittersweet aging her up, honestly, because I feel like I’ve known her forever as this sassy little girl. So, I think it was important to keep her personality from the first film, but also bring her into this new world of high school and how the dynamic has changed with her and JJ of her wanting independence. She really relied on him a lot in the first film, but now she has friends, and her world has becoming bigger and it’s a lot for her to deal with. Then at the same time, she’s trying to save the world and doing all this awesome action stuff. So, it’s a lot but it’s cool.

Ken Jeong as Kim and Dave Bautista as JJ in 'My Spy The Eternal City.'

MF: Finally, Ken, can you talk about how your character fits into the story this time around and what was it like to work with Dave and Chloe again?

Ken Jeong: It was all the superlatives apply. It was just again, fit like a glove, so easy to come back. Then just so grateful to everyone and to Pete (Segal) for expanding my character and almost have a parallel story between my character and my character’s son, Colin. It is almost like a mirror to Sophie and JJ. I really believe the purpose of our dynamic is to just highlight and impress upon the deepening bond of Sophie and JJ. So, it was just an honor to be a part of that storytelling. I think that, and Dave and I always talk about this, we’re storytellers and just to contribute on that side of storytelling and giving you that mirror lane highway to Sophie and JJ, I was tracking while filming in it and it meant a lot that they trusted me to be a part of it.

Moviefone: To begin with, Emma, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay, and what was it like playing a character who has such a positive attitude?

Emma Roberts: I love the script for ‘Space Cadet’. I read it and immediately fell madly in love with the character of Rex, and it was fun to get to play someone so optimistic and upbeat and also a little bit tiring.

MF: Was it emotionally draining playing a character as upbeat as Rex?

ER: I mean, a little bit, but also it was fun. I’ve been doing a lot of much darker stuff the last few years, and so it was fun to play someone that I felt like the audience will connect to and feel uplifted by and inspired by, because I just feel like we’ve all been through a lot these last few years. So, to do a movie where there is no real darkness, it really is light and fun and something you can watch with your family and friends and siblings and not be embarrassed that you’re watching it with them, was fun.

MF: Tom, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and your approach to playing Logan?

Tom Hopper: First reaction was that it’s very fun. I read a lot of scripts, and there’s very few that make me laugh and make me think all at the same time, and then also have a character that is compelling and that I would have a good time playing. So that was my first reaction, and certainly one that I took into wanting to have the meeting with Liz Garcia. Then in terms of Logan, for me, someone like Logan is an example of what I think a lot of people end up doing, which is they become their job. They identify purely by their job rather than who they really are as a person, and they fit into that mold. That’s what’s happened to Logan. I think he’s very much by the book. Then, I think there is a more human side and more fun side of Logan that is then brought out by Rex and that’s why he’s so compelled by her, but also scared of her as well, because she represents the thing that he’s kind of shut down and pushed away. So, he is kind of fighting that thing to bring that back to life, which I think is kind of a lovely message of the movie that the Logan character brings, is that we should all kind of try and do that sometimes.

MF: Emma, how would you describe Rex’s friendship with Nadine?

ER: We were channeling our ‘Romy and Michele’. I loved that duo. I remember when Poppy and I were walking into the high school reunion and we were like, “It’s ‘Romy and Michele’”. We had to. It’s one of my favorite movies.

MF: Emma, can you talk about Rex’s relationship with Logan, what she sees in him, and what was it like for you working with Tom?

ER: Tom Hopper is a literal joy. He is the real Rex. He comes to work every day and is just the happiest guy there and just uplifts everyone. But he was so fun, and I loved Rex and Logan’s relationship because obviously it’s super unlikely and I especially love their karaoke scene together. I think people are going to love it because I know when the Counting Crows comes on, I lose my mind. So, I think people are going to love that little throwback that they give.

MF: Tom, how would you describe Logan and Rex’s relationship, why he’s attracted to her and what was it like for you working with Emma?

TH: I think it is an unusual match. But like I say, underneath it, they’re probably more similar than they realize. But I had a great time working with Emma. I think from what was on the page to what it became, I think I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Emma was a great scene partner. She brought her A game every day, and she’s just so full of life. She comes to life on set and on screen, and it’s very easy to work with.

MF: Was it fun shooting the karaoke scene and singing Counting Crows’ ‘Mr. Jones’ with Emma on screen?

TH: Yeah. We started rehearsing that the hour after I landed in New Jersey. We went and rehearsed that straight away, along with two other songs, because we didn’t know which song it was going to be at that point, because they were still figuring out the rights for the song. But when it turned out, I was pleased it turned out to be that song, because that was my favorite one of the three. But yeah, it was an experience. We just sort of dove in head-first together, and it was a lot of fun. It was a good way to get to know each other quite quickly.

MF: Finally, Tom, what was your experience like collaborating with director Liz W. Garcia on set?

TH: Liz is wonderful as a director. She’s so collaborative. I knew from the first meeting I had with her that we were going to get along. Her manner and her energy were perfect for this movie. Plus, she’s the writer as well, right? So, when it came to suggesting stuff on set, she had full reign to be able to just move things around and say, “Oh, say this, or say that.” For me, I love that. When a director is just going to get their hands dirty, and comes in and you collaborate and you say, “Oh, what about if I did this?” Or “What about if I did that?” I think that’s when comedy particularly is great, because you get to just play, and you get this sort of synergy with the director. She’s great for that. She’s amazing. It’s always super helpful having the writer as the director, for sure. Sometimes you get that leeway with a director that’s not the writer, because they’ve been given free reign of the script to move it around on the day. They don’t have to go and check with the writer. But it’s always amazing when it’s a writer/director. They’re not married to their words, and they’re very open to you to come with suggestions and make it real for you. So, if they’re fully behind that, then that’s a match made in heaven. That’s great.

The Boys’ are back, and they’re not pulling any punches. The series returns on Prime Video on June 14 with a 3-episode premiere. Tensions are high as Victoria Neuman inches closer to becoming the Vice President. The Boys’ team morale is fractured as the gang becomes tired of Butcher’s deceits and lies. On top of it all, Homelander now has Becca’s son Ryan under his influence, and Butcher must do whatever it takes to get Ryan away from him.

    Initial Thoughts

The story and its characters continues to wow in season 4, with ‘The Boys’, deeply exploring each character’s past and face the consequences of their past decisions. While the first couple of episodes moved a bit slow, the series does ramps up with shocking reveals in later episodes. This season merges a major storyline from spin-off series ‘Gen V’ into the series, and adds a new threat to both supes and humans alike. It’s easy to see why the series continues to gain so much attention and is renewed for a fifth season.

    ‘The Boys’: Story and Direction

Just as in previous seasons, each episode is filled with an outrageous amount of gore and shocking reveals. In this season, the story focuses on facing the past, as well as one’s own mortality. For Billy Butcher, the consequences of taking temp V have caught up with him. With merely months to live, Butcher re-examines his past decisions and actions when it comes to how he treated Ryan, who is now under the watchful eye of Homelander. Although rare, it’s not the first time Butcher has had a soft spot for someone in his life. When it comes to Ryan, Butcher feels more of an attachment because he’s the last connection Butcher has to his late wife, Becca, and his actions feel more genuine rather than self-serving.

Butcher isn’t the only one facing mortality. This season also sees Homelander confronting the issue from the lens of an all-powerful and essentially indestructible superhero. There are moments where you sympathize with what Homelander is feeling and how lonely he actually is in all of this, though those moments are brief as he goes right back to doing the next terrible thing.

Erin Moriarty’s Starlight takes ownership of her own identity this season, leaving behind her super suit and superhero name. Now going by her real name, Annie January is hard at work to expose Vought but crumbles under pressure when something from her past is brought to light. This season has been the best development for Annie and perhaps the most vulnerable we’ve seen her yet.

Aside from exploring mortality and characters’ pasts, this season introduces a couple of new members of The Seven: Firecracker (Valorie Curry) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), who are not afraid to make waves within The Seven.

There is a lot going on in this season, but it doesn’t ever feel convoluted. Every character gets their fair share of screen time, fully explored, and there are still plenty of action and carnage that we all know and love.

Merging the World of ‘The Boys’ and ‘Gen V’

    'The Boys' Season 4.

‘The Boys’ spin-off series ‘Gen V’ premiered in September of 2023, fleshing out and expanding the world of ‘The Boys’. Aside from the up-and-coming superhero hopefuls, ‘Gen V’ delves further into Vought’s history and introduces a dangerous virus that can kill the supes. With cameos from a couple of notable characters of ‘The Boys,’ it makes sense that in this season, we see some ‘Gen V’ characters make their own crossover appearances.

As seen in this season’s trailer, Sam and Cate make a cameo, connecting the storyline from ‘Gen V’ to ‘The Boys’. However, this does not mean viewers need to binge the spin-off series (though they should). What has been great about both series is that they explain the backstory without the need for an exposition scene or narrative, and usually, it’s concise and to the point.

This season is filled with the most character growth and arcs yet, which is wild to say because the show has always done a great job exploring and developing its characters. Despite a slightly slow start, the series ramps up and gets more intense with each episode.

Although the focus is on Victoria Neuman’s potential rise to presidency, the series continues to explore and flesh out its characters. This season focuses on certain characters’ mortality, and it’s been interesting to see how each character reacts.

The series continues to surprise and awe. Whether it’s plot twists, carnage, or suped-up farm animals, it keeps its viewers on their toes.

‘The Boys’ season 4 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What Is The Plot Of ‘The Boys’?

In Season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander (Antony Starr), who is consolidating his power. Butcher (Karl Urban), with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

    Preview:

    • Rory Kinnear will play Tom Bombadil in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’
    • He joins the show for its second season.
    • ‘The Rings of Power’ returns in August.

Thanks to the various J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations that have hit screens through the years (especially Peter Jackson’s successful pair of movie trilogies), we’ve had any number of characters parading across the screen. Aragorn. Gandalf. Frodo. Even Grima Wormtongue got his moment.

Yet one who has been shown no love –– even in the BBC radio play versions –– is Tom Bombadil. All that is set to change later this year, as the team behind Prime Video’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ have revealed that British actor Rory Kinnear (probably best known for his role as Tanner in the recent Bond movies) will play the character in Season 2.

    Who is Tom Bombadil?

Rory Kinnear as Tom Bombadil in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' season 2.

Bombadil is a figure of unknown origin in Tolkien’s works who projects a timeless wisdom, often propelling characters in a direction to see things more clearly and helping them better understand the wide world around them.

In the lore, he claims to be as old as Middle-earth itself, possessing wisdom far beyond the reaches of others. Essential to the spirit of discovery and of the search for meaning, Bombadil is famously clad in yellow boots, blue jacket, and a feathered hat, and prone to enigmatic expressions in singsong verse.

You can sort of see why many filmmakers might have skipped over him. Yet the ‘Rings of Powers’ creators have decided to take on that challenge…

    Here’s J. D. Payne on the character:

“He’s whimsical and magical, and almost verging on silly. But also has the wisdom of the ages and the music of the spheres and deep emotional wells of ancient history and myth, and his conception and function are tied to Norse myths and have deep roots in European fairy tale.”

And this is what his fellow executive producer Patrick McKay had to say:

“Weirdly, he’s kind of the most ‘Lord of the Rings’ thing in ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Tom is sort of a curiosity within that structure because while it is darker, Tom Bombadil is singing and saying lines that could be nursery rhymes from children’s poems. So, he sort of defies the tonal shift of the rest of the season and is a real point of light amidst an otherwise sea of darkness.”

This is what Kinnear had to say about playing Tom:

“There’s this sense of huge experience, huge openness, huge empathy, and having gone through so much that he knows it’s the small things that are important. That felt actually quite domestic, felt quite reachable in terms of my understanding of who he was.”

In addition to the character showing up on TV, the tome ‘The Adventures of Tom Bombadil’ will be re-released in paperback by HarperCollins on August 20th, just ahead of the streaming series’ return.

Here’s Chris Smith, Tolkien Publishing Director at HarperCollins on the decision:

“It’s my hope that, with the introduction of Rory Kinnear’s portrayal of Tom Bombadil in ‘The Rings of Power’, audiences are inspired to learn more about this unique character beloved of generations of readers around the world and will delight in sharing in his many adventures in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.”

Moviefone: To begin with, Ella, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and what were some of the aspects of your character that you were excited to explore on screen?

Ella Purnell: I remember it perfectly. I was sitting on the couch. I was ill, and every five pages I’d be like, “Wait, this is really cool.” I just kept going and kept going. I was absolutely blown away by the level of detail. I knew of the games, but I wasn’t familiar, I hadn’t played them at that point, so I wasn’t familiar with the tone. I got that from the script. I got the dark comedy, I got the balance of the humor with the heavy post-apocalyptic, and the fifties/sixties retro-futuristic style was so exciting to me. More than anything, it was the character. She, I just thought was so funny and direct, and I really loved her attitudes, which is partly a product of her upbringing and her environment, and partly just who she is. You know when you really want to watch a show that you should really try to be in the show.

MF: Aaron, how familiar were you with the game and what was your reaction to this incredible world that Jonathan Nolan and the writers have created?

Aaron Moten: I mean, I knew of ‘Fallout’, right? I was not of my friend group that got into playing ‘Fallout’ but I played other games at the time. Here’s this weird full circle moment where it’s like the world is telling me, “Hey, we’ll give you a chance now in real time to roam through these worlds.” I mean, it is incredibly detailed and it’s so dense, and that’s what makes it fun, especially as an actor to get to really feel like this is your playground for the day. It got so exciting where we would be looking at scripts and when we’d be talking on set about like, “Oh man, I can’t wait to see what they come up with for this setup. And where are we going to be for such and such scene?” It just was so thrilling, honestly, as an actor to get to live in this world.

Ella Purnell as Lucy in 'Fallout.'

MF: Ella, can you talk about Lucy’s journey and what she discovers about herself and the world around her after she leaves the vault?

EP: It’s a great question. What I like about Lucy is there’s so much more to her than what you see, and I think people will underestimate her, and I’m excited to show them what she’s capable of. She’s obviously incredibly naive and innocent. She grew up in a vault underground being drip-fed propaganda from a corporation her entire life. She’s the daughter of the overseer. She’s essentially the president’s daughter. She has a role and a duty and a belief that that is what she was bred and is going to do. I think people don’t know who they are sometimes until they’re put in a certain situation, a challenging situation. Only then do you really know what you’re made of. That for her is absolutely going to the Wasteland. I mean, she really goes through it. It’s tough for her, and she just has this bravery that emerges that I don’t think she even knew she had inside her. It comes from this inherent belief, and choosing to continue to believe that humans have inherent goodness inside them, no matter how evil and lawless they may appear to be on the Wasteland.

Power Suit and Aaron Moten as Maximus in 'Fallout.'
(L to R) Power Suit and Aaron Moten as Maximus in ‘Fallout.’ Credit: JoJo Whilden/Prime Video. Copyright: © AMAZON CONTENT SERVICES LLC.

MF: Finally, Aaron, can you talk about Maximus’s role in the Brotherhood of Steel, and does he begin to question what he’s fighting for?

AM: Absolutely. I think, that’s one of these things that the characters have a lot of differences, between these three main characters, but they have similarities, and they have these touchstones of moments that they kind of separately share. I agree with until Maximus is put into certain situations, it’s a discovery of what do I really feel about something? I know that the Brotherhood is a harsh reality, and even being born and raised in the Wasteland would be a harsh reality. It’s a tough existence for Maximus and everything I think has been a bit of a struggle for him. So, survival being an important thing for all these characters, I think he’s trying to look out for himself at times but is he making a noble pursuit and it’s about rising-up, gaining power and fighting off his own devils because of that.

What is the Plot of ‘Fallout’?

The show depicts the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear exchange in an alternate history where advances in nuclear technology after WWII led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society and a subsequent resource war. The survivors took refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults, built to preserve humanity in the event of nuclear annihilation. Two centuries later, a young woman (Ella Purnell), a descendant of the original “Vault Dwellers” from one of many Vaults, leaves behind the only life she has ever known to venture out into the dangerously hostile and savage Wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your work as a producer and why you wanted to adapt these books into a series?

Roma Downey: We know that nothing is ever easy, right? But it’s always worth it. I came to ‘The Baxters’ series as a fan of the books. As you know, they’re based on a bestselling book series by a wonderful, amazing, talented author, Karen Kingsbury. A friend gave me the first book, which is called ‘Redemption,’ and I just couldn’t put it down. I thought, “Oh my gosh, this is amazing. It needs to be a TV series.” So, I reached out to Karen and said, “Please trust me with your beloved book series and let me bring it to life on the screen.” Thankfully, she agreed, and here we are. So, I just felt these stories were so compelling, the characters so well-rounded, and we rarely get to see a family of faith on television. They’re not a perfect family by any means. They’re dealing with crises and situations that would bring anybody to their knees. But the difference is when they’re being brought to their knees, they pray. With their love of each other, and their love of God, they’re able to raise each other up and make their way through some emotional situations. But I gathered a great cast. I had fun casting the kids. Elizabeth and John Baxter are the matriarch and patriarch, and they have five grown kids. At the center, you have this loving, committed, anchoring relationship of the mother and father, and then the chaos and the mess of family. But listen, my family is messy. I’m sure everybody’s family is a bit messy, and so I think that’s what’s so lovable about them. They don’t always get it right, but they’re well-intended and it’s going to be on at Easter, which I think is the perfect launch time for a series filled with hope. It plays out like a hope opera. I’m hoping that families will gather for Easter and that they’ll curl up on the couch together and that they’ll check out ‘The Baxters,’ which will be screening on Amazon Prime Video. I think it’s been a long time coming, but we’re so glad it’s finally here.

MF: Why did you decide to adapt the books into a series rather than a movie?

RD: Well, because Karen Kingsbury has 27 of these books in this family series. So, in success, ‘The Baxters’ TV Series could run forever. There was just too much story to put in a film. Honestly, I’m really encouraged by what I see in the film industry in terms of inspirational, uplifting content. In the last few years, we’ve seen some amazing faith movies really hit home. I don’t know that we’ve seen as many faith TV series do so well. Since my days on ‘Touched by an Angel’, people have been saying, “Let’s get a show like that back on TV.” I really feel that ‘The Baxters’ has themes and an essence like ‘Touched by an Angel’ did, and not since ‘Touched by an Angel’ have I stepped in front of the camera into a series. So, I’m excited to play Elizabeth Baxter myself and my own daughter, Riley, is playing one of the Baxter daughters. So, it’s been a lovely family experience in this family-made drama.

MF: Finally, how would you describe your character Elizabeth Baxter and what were some of the aspects of the character you were most excited to explore on screen?

RD: I think what I liked most about her was just her mother’s heart. She’s got five kids. She loves fiercely. She loves with passion and compassion. She’s the mom that they’re quick to call when there’s crises on the horizon. She’s defensive of her kids in that loving, mother-lion way. She’s also a little bit of a prayer warrior, which I really appreciate. I don’t think we often get to see a family that prays together in a TV series. In the first episode, you’ll see Elizabeth and John Baxter hold hands and they’ll call in prayer for their daughter in the name of Jesus and it’s really touching.

What is the Plot of ‘The Baxters’?

Based on the Redemption literary series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury, ‘The Baxters’ is a riveting family drama that follows Elizabeth (Roma Downey) and John Baxter (Ted McGinley) and their five adult children. Season One of The Baxters centers on Elizabeth and John’s daughter, Kari (Ali Cobrin), who learns the shocking truth that her professor husband, Tim (Brandon Hirsch), has been secretly having an affair with one of his college students. As her relationship is tested, Kari must seek comfort in her faith and family to discover if love is truly a choice and if her marriage can be redeemed. In this deeply moving faith-based journey, The Baxters must come together as a family to work through the challenges of life.
