‘Countdown’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Releasing on Prime Video on June 25th with three initial episodes, ‘Countdown’ stars Jensen Ackles (‘Supernatural’) as Detective Mark Meachum, a headstrong LAPD office recruited for a multi-agency task force assigned to stop a serious threat to Los Angeles.

The cast for the new show, created by Derek Haas (‘Chicago PD’) also includes Eric Dane (‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Jessica Camacho (‘Watchmen’), Violett Beane (‘Death and Other Details’), Uli Latukefu (‘Black Adam’) and Elliot Knight (‘The Boys’).

Have you ever pondered what would happen if a truck carrying a load of episodes of your average network procedural collided with another hauling 1980s and 1990s action thrillers? If so, your answer is appearing on Prime Video as Haas, a writer and producer behind the likes of ‘Wanted’, ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ and the various Chicago-set TV series that are numerous enough to fill a whole night of NBC’s primetime schedule has essentially built his dream series.

Whether or not it represents your dream or your idea of a nightmare might depend on your tolerance/love for dialogue that is growled rather than spoken, action scenes set to propulsive rock tracks and every trope imaginable spun in admittedly fun fashion.

    Script and Direction

Haas and his writing team certainly know what type of show they were aiming to make here –– it is unashamedly action packed and about as subtle as being beaten around the head with a DVD copy of a straight-to-home-entertainment thriller.

The Prime Video budget means that the show was able to actual shoot in and around Los Angeles rather than relocating to Atlanta or some other city, and that mean the show has the shiny/grimy backdrop that makes it feel that much more authentic (even if the writing and some of the performances are purely synthetic).

This is clashing egos and team bonding, dialogue snippets that include lines such as “the only way to make this right is to make sure the people responsible are found and put in the ground”, all anchored by a cast who understood the assignment (particularly the leading man –– more on him in a moment).

Directors including Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Brown, Lisa Robinson and Avi Youabian use the California backdrops to bring the series to life in exciting enough fashion, and the show certainly looks decent, even if not quite at the level of, say, a prestige Apple TV+ offering.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), Luke Finau (Uli Latukefu), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane), Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), Damon Drew (Jonathan Togo), and Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles) in 'Countdown'. Photo: Elizabeth Morris © Amazon Content Services LLC.

Jensen Ackles is practically a genre to himself at this point, having cornered the market in cocky, charismatic lead characters with an easy smile, a quick wit and (in this case) floppy hair.

His Mark Meachum is exactly the sort of role at which he excels –– iconoclastic, driven and hiding a secret pain (in this case, a serious medical condition we won’t spoil). He can handle the action moments with aplomb but really comes alive when he’s just smirking at his co-stars or getting his way.

Eric Dane is playing the boss of the task force, and while he’s dealing with ALS that limits how much he can do, he still brings real presence to the role of Nathan Blythe. He’s completely believable as the man driving the team to figure out the case.

Elsewhere, the cast struggle to make quite the same impact, though the likes of Jessica Camacho (as a dedicated, yet troubled DEA agent) Violett Beane (as FBI tech genius and hacker Evan Shepherd) and Uli Latukefu (as Detective Luke Finau) do manage to pop.

And beyond them, a lot of fairly stock villain and terrorist characters, plus the sort of smug officials who are often threatening to shut the task force down only to be thwarted when our heroes pull out a win (or, in the case of Blythe, use their own powerful connections to shut down opponents).

‘Countdown’ launches with the death of a high-profile TV star playing a Homeland Security agent (we won’t name them and ruin the surprise), but very quickly lays its hand clear –– and if you can’t guess the case the team will end up running down from just the title, then I can’t imagine you’ve watched much television in the past.

But if you’re in the mood for silly action fun and vague nods to more complicated characters here and there, then ‘Countdown’ should fill a spot.

Moviefone: To begin with, Jensen, when you first read the screenplay, what excited you most about being part of this project?

Jensen Ackles: Unlike some other shows that I’m a part of, I read ‘Countdown’ with a true eagerness to know what was happening and an excitement. A youthful zeal, as my friend Eric Dane would say. It’s a thrill ride. It’s a ride that I would want to be on as an audience. I got the fortunate call to be on it personally, and there’s nothing in there that I was like, “I don’t want to that.” There were very little discussions with Derek about like, “Hey, can we change the this?” If anything, it was on the day. There was no ick factor. There was no like, “I don’t think I would do this.” Everything that he wrote was a template, and it was either done with precision or we played with it until we got what we wanted and what we needed, and it was a delight.

MF: Eric, your character is the boss of this unit, did that extend off set as well?

Eric Dane: So, everybody’s somewhat of a self-contained unit, but we’ve all coalesced nicely. There is no leader. There is just a group of people that have come together to endeavor to make the best show they can, and we had a great time.

MF: Finally, Jensen, what was it like collaborating with series creator Derek Haas on this project?

Jensen Ackles: I hate to call him a boss because I view him as a friend, but he is a wonderful tone setter. He literally just gave a group of crazy actors a playground to absolutely play, and he wrote such great in-depth characters, and a twisty storyline. It lent itself to the camaraderie that we all found ourselves in, and I can’t thank him enough. I can’t speak highly enough of that guy. He’s a wonderful person to work with. I hope I get to work with him for many years.

    • The new season adapts Lee Child’s 13th book, ‘Gone Tomorrow’.

‘Reacher,’ the Prime Video series adapted from Lee Child’s bestselling series of novels about the hulking former U.S. Army Military Police major –– brought to life on TV by Alan Ritchson –– has become one of the streaming service’s most successful shows.

It’ll return for a fourth season, and now we know who will be sharing the screen with Ritchson (and probably looking not to get punched), as Jay Baruchel is leading a host of new cast announcements.

Baruchel, of course, knows a thing or two about acting opposite a hulking action star –– he appears in Netflix series ‘FUBAR’ with Arnold Schwarzenegger. And it probably doesn’t hurt that that shares a showrunner with ‘Reacher,’ Nick Santora.

Ritchson recently popped up on the series’ Instagram account to reveal that the fourth season will adapt Child’s 13th novel, ‘Gone Tomorrow’:

While the season will likely make the usual tweaks from the source material –– in this case, for example, from New York to Philadelphia. In it, when a chance encounter with a distraught stranger on a train goes horribly wrong, Jack Reacher  is drawn into a complex and deadly game that pits him against ruthless foes from the highest echelons of power.

Baruchel will play Jacob Merrick, a small-town policeman.

Who else is among the cast for the new season?

    Kevin Corrigan in 'Bang Bang'.

Baruchel was far from the only person added to the show, as we know that Kevin Corrigan (‘The Departed’) is aboard to play Detective Docherty.

He’ll be partnered with Tamara Green, a detective with the Philadelphia police department, play by Sydelle Noel (‘Glow’).

Singer-actress Agnez Mo (‘Pernikahan Dini’) will be Lila Hoth, a young Indonesian woman who, along with her mother, Amisha Hoth (Indonesian-French singer Anggun, who appeared in ‘Levitating’), come to Philly to track down Lila’s American biological father.

When will ‘Reacher’ Season 4 be on screens?

Prime Video has yet to confirm an official release date for the fourth season, but given that production is gearing up now, we’d expect it to drop next year.

  • ‘Deep Cover’ Interviews: Bryce Dallas Howard and Cast

Moviefone: To begin with, Bryce, what was your first reaction to the screenplay, the situation the characters find themselves in, and did it read funny on the page?

Bryce Dallas Howard: Oh yeah. So, the script is written by two brilliant improv comedians. Some of the best, honestly. So, it was hilarious, but it was also truthful. I really related to the characters and all the characters were very different. You know, it’s fun because this is a true ensemble. So, I had heard about the movie for years from Colin (Trevorrow) because we worked together on ‘Jurassic World’. I’d heard of it as a British action comedy, and I didn’t think that there would be any room for an American but then very luckily I got invited into it.

MF: Orlando, can you talk about your character’s dedication to his craft and is Marlon someone that you would want to work with on a movie set? What do you think he would be like to have as a scene partner?

Orlando Bloom: I don’t think so. He’d be somebody you’d poke fun at. I think that was the low hanging fruit, the layup for the character was that I think historically and hilariously actors can and have and maybe some do or have taken themselves too seriously. Me, I’ve never done that. As a guy who’s just desperate and thirsty for that shot at life, he sees this opportunity to sort of go deep method, if you like, instead of deep cover. He’s creating this weird world. I kind of based the character on Liam Gallagher a little bit because he was written as a Northerner and I thought, well, that’s the most swag because I grew up with the band Oasis. I saw this guy as this, and it informed the whole Roach aspect of the character even down to the costume and some of the physicality and the attitude that I think was right for the role. You know, the writing being so well done, the humor was on the page, and I just had to play the truth of all those moments. I’ve not done a lot of straight comedy as it were, but that’s what I’ve kind of realized that when there’s heart and truth in it, if the writing is good, then the humor lands.

MF: Nick, why does your character join this improv group, what he is hoping to get out of it, and how does his life change as a result?

Nick Mohammed: Well, you know, he’s at crossroads in his life like all the characters really, but Hugh works in an office. He doesn’t have an acting background or an improv background or anything. He quite fortuitously just stumbles into Kat’s class, likes what he sees, feels like he might have maybe found his people or at least found a way to improve his confidence. Little does he know that very quickly things spiral out of control and obviously he ends up on these undercover missions. I mean, he is truly out of his depth, goes on a big journey, including having that fleeting relationship with Shosh. But by the end, he does have his confidence built. He’s sort of found these confidence soulmates in in Marlon and Kat. He’s just feels like a better person, more of his own person, more comfortable in his in his own skin, I guess, by the end. His journey is kind of like that.

MF: Finally, Bryce, can you talk about working on the set with filmmaker Tom Kingsley, and as an actress, has your approach to working with directors changed since you became a director yourself?

BDH: No, because I’m a third-generation actor. So, my dad (Ron Howard) grew up on sets, and I grew up on sets and whether that’s an inappropriate thing, we’ll leave that to other people to debate. But because of that, I’ve always viewed things more from an outside perspective. I see the process more through the director’s eyes and then acting is like something fun that I feel like I’m getting away with. Where I’m like, “Oh my God, I get to go in front of the camera. That’s crazy.” So, it’s such a joy getting to see how other directors direct, because that’s often the challenge when you’re directing full time. You’re doing your stuff, but you’re not actually getting to see how other people do it. You know, you always learn so much and, my God, Tom is such a gentle, lovely, open minded and encouraging director. He really wants us to all feel a sense of ownership over the work that we’re doing, and just no ego whatsoever. I just really loved getting to be around him and getting to work with him.

    • ‘Delphi’ would be set in the movies’ boxing gym.
    • Marco Ramirez is aboard to run the show.

With the success of the ‘Creed’ movies so far –– as kicked off back in 2015 with Ryan Coogler co-writing and directing the original –– it was only a matter of time before we got to see it expand beyond the big screen.

    20063625

Leading man (and executive producer) Michael B. Jordan made no secret of the fact that he wanted the ‘Creed’ universe to keep on developing –– around the release of ‘Creed III,’ which Jordan stepped up to also direct, he made mention of ruminating future plans.

Those have become reality with Jordan announcing at the Amazon Upfronts that a new spin-off TV series called ‘Delphi’ is in the works for Prime Video. So we can expect plenty more pugilism in our small screen future.

(L to R) Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa in ‘Creed II.’ Photo: MGM.

The ‘Creed’ story begins with that original movie, itself a spin-off from the iconic ‘Rocky’ franchise, and introducing us to Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Jordan), the illegitimate son of the late fighter Apollo Creed (played in the original films by Carl Weathers).

Reconnecting with his legacy, Adonis starts training to box in more advanced matches, and ends up working with Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) himself.

Donnie also forges a relationship with musician Bianca (Tessa Thompson), who has her own challenges, including a worsening hearing issue.

Through the movies, Donnie faces various challenges (and challengers), including in ‘Creed II,’ the formidable son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren reprising his iconic role from ‘Rocky IV’) and, in ‘Creed III,’ old neighborhood friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who went to prison years ago and has returned burning with a vengeful spirit.

The Delphi Boxing Academy is the Los Angeles-based boxing gym founded by Tony “Duke” Evers where Apollo Creed trained for many years.

Now run by Evers’ son, Tony “Little Duke” Evers (played by Wood Harris in the movies), the Delphi gym is home to Adonis.

Here’s what Jordan had to say about the show at the Amazon Upfront:

“The series that takes us back to where it all began. What I love about this story is that it stays true to what the ‘Rocky’ and ‘Creed’ franchise is all about: hard work, determination, fighting for something bigger than yourself. It’s about family, the ones we’re born into and the ones that we created. We’re building something special here, and I’m excited to introduce you to new fighters that will walk into the Delphi. As always, in ‘Creed’ we say, one step, one round, one punch at a time.”

Marco Ramirez will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. He’s no stranger to the world of boxing, as he recently created and served as showrunner on the Hulu boxing drama ‘La Máquina’ starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and Eiza González.

Jordan will executive produce under his Outlier Society banner along with Liz Raposo. Winkler Films’ Irwin Winkler, David Winkler, and Charles Winkler also executive produce.

Whether Jordan shows up as Adonis on screen remains to be seen, but we’d bet good money that he’ll at least grace the show in the pilot to kick things off.

And notable by his absence? Stallone, who has increasingly moved away from the ‘Creed’ franchise and doesn’t seem to want to be as closely connected as he once was.

What else is Michael B. Jordan working on?

Jordan has been keeping himself typically busy.

He’s currently in movie theaters leading Coogler’s ‘Sinners,’ which has been doing great business at the box office. The story of twin brothers (both played by Jordan) who look to start a juke joint in their old home town in 1930s Mississippi, only to discover a lurking threat from some fanged fiends.

‘Sinners’ has so far earned more than $280 million at the worldwide box office, and has been showing incredible staying power, especially for an original movie.

The actor/filmmaker has several projects in development, including a ‘Rainbow Six’ film that will see him return as special forces operative John Clark.

He’s also, to no-one’s surprise working up a fourth ‘Creed’ movie, which he’s expressed a desire to direct following his success with the third.

Before that, though, he’s preparing to direct a new take on 1968 heist movie ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ which he’ll also lead and appear opposite Taylor Russell.

Finally, he’s attached to star with Will Smith in the long-developing follow-up to ‘I Am Legend,’ which has Francis Lawrence aboard to direct.

Jordan told Variety last year that he felt like he had plenty of work still to do:

“I still feel like an underdog. I feel like I just got here, like I’ve just arrived, and I have the tools and the things around me to really be on the offensive a little bit.”

When will ‘Delphi’ be on our screens?

Prime Video has yet to announce a premiere date for the show. Since we have zero casting details or anything else on it yet, we’d be shocked if it arrived on the service much before 2026, and likely later in that year as it stands.

‘Another Simple Favor’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Arriving globally on Prime Video on May 1st, ‘Another Simple Favor’ throws us back into the knotty dynamic of mommy vlogger-turned-crime sleuth Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and mysterious, murderous fashion plate Emily Nelson (Blake Lively).

This sequel to the 2018 murder mystery brought to screens by director Paul Feig, looks to amp up the mystery even further, throwing in new family members and some luxurious Italian island locations.

On television, there’s a common trick of sitcoms and other shows usually anchored to one place to goose things up by taking the characters on holiday. ‘The Brady Bunch’ went to Hawaii. ‘Friends’ brought us “The One in Barbados” and the usually hospital-bound ‘Scrubs’ splashed out for a destination wedding in the Bahamas.

‘Another Simple Favor’ tries a similar trick, albeit in movie form (though it is premiering on Prime Video), moving its murder mystery machinations to the picturesque isle of Capri in Italy. But is it enough to elevate everything? That’s a more complicated question, one whose answer is both yes and no.

    Script and Direction

The sequel boasts the writing talents of Jessica Sharzer (who adapted ‘A Simple Favor’ from the novel by Darcey Bell and has written the likes of ‘Nerve,’ and episodes of ‘American Horror Story’) with Laeta Kalogridis –– more known for the dramatic ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ –– taking a pass.

Together, they have concocted something that feels as though it has a similar energy to the original movie, while looking to heighten things to an even more absurd degree. Which is saying something, given that the 2018 effort had more turns than a corkscrew.

‘A Simple Favor’ effectively blended its mystery and comedy tones together, and while the follow-up attempts the same trick with some new complications, it mostly manages it, while sometimes tipping too far into ridiculousness.

Still, there are the requisite laughs to be found here, and enough twists to keep you guessing. Once the new main mystery is revealed, it does rather start to deflate, and there is some egregious sequel baiting towards the end.

Feig, returning as director, proves he can adeptly hop between genres, and being let loose in the beautiful island of Capri certainly allows him to up the visual interest of the movie. He also capably manages the new cast recruits while keeping the focus squarely where it should be: the winning, sometimes overly catty dynamic between Kendrick’s Stephanie and Lively’s Emily.

Lively might be the superstar here, but it’s Anna Kendrick who really keeps the movie grounded and funny. As Stephanie, who is awkwardly trying to enjoy her newfound fame following the events of the original film (and capitalize on them by writing a book about the case), Kendrick remains the comic powerhouse of the film, whether she’s effectively narrating the movie through her video channel or trading barbs with Lively’s Emily (or, er, Hope, as she should really be called.)

As for Lively, she’s back in full-on comic-inflected femme fatale mode, as she struts around in outrageous clothing and gets passive-aggressive with Kendrick’s character. She once more makes an impact, whether she’s plotting her next move or proving more of a friend to Stephanie than she might have suspected.

There’s also a healthy vein of vulnerability in both the leads, which makes the characters as relatable in the past, even as the screwball murder mystery is dialed up into ever more frenzied levels of complexity.

Around them, a collection of returning and new performers add extra layers to the story.

Henry Golding is able to let loose more as Sean, Emily’s ex-husband (who had a dalliance with Stephanie in the original), and here is a drunken, sarcastic mess, throwing endless shade at his ex.

Of the newcomers, the highlights are Alex Newell, who steals moments and scenes as Stephanie’s enthusiastic assistant/book tour manager Vicky and Elena Sofia Ricci as Portia Versano, the powerful, calculating mother of Emily’s new fiancé Dante (Michele Morrone), neither of whom show up on google searches, but are clearly very rich and powerful –– it won’t take you long to guess why.

Less present, but still entertaining are Detective Summervile (Bashir Salahuddin, returning from the original) and FBI agent Irene Walker (Taylor Ortega), who help drive the plot while not forgetting to bring the laughs.

The really nutritious additions to the cast are Allison Janney and Elizabeth Perkins, who consume whole sections of scenery playing Emily’s grasping aunt and drunken mother.

‘A Simple Favor’ sometimes coasted on the power of its stars and some fun plot turns, and ‘Another Simple Favor’ falls into a similar trap.

Still, the idyllic countryside helps it feel different enough, and though it can’t quite keep the momentum up towards the end, watching it is not too much of an ask.

Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square.

‘Étoile’ Season 1 receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Landing on Prime Video with all eight episodes of its first season, ‘Étoile’ is the latest series from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, responsible for shows such as ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.’

Yet it shares more in common with one of their lesser known projects, ‘Bunheads,’ which starred Sutton Foster as a Las Vegas showgirl who marries someone on a whim and ends up in their small home town, working with her mother-in-law at a ballet school. In ‘Étoile’s case, however, the setting is much grander, the stakes are higher and with a two-season order, its fate is much less dramatic.

Amy Sherman-Palladino has made no secret of her love for, and connection to, ballet. She trained as a dancer in her youth and was considering a career in the medium before TV writing and producing took over her life.

So with the success of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and her overall deal at Amazon, she and husband/creative partner Dan Palladino have gone all in on the new series, filling it with their usual rat-a-tat screwball comedy dialogue, plenty of crackling comebacks and enough drama to cross the Atlantic and travel between both New York and Paris.

And given their love for dancing, it’s naturally also a showcase for some truly superb artists, choreographers and others. Depending on your own appreciation for the wild world of creative types and the giant egos in the ballet sphere, chances are this will be your next binge watch.

    Script and Direction

The Sherman-Palladino duo are known, as we said before, for their script work, and here, gifted with a cast that can pull it off (including one who learned English for the role and manages to pull off the quickfire chat), their words are the highlight.

With a much-expanded canvas (previous shows were largely set in one locale, though ‘Mrs. Maisel’ had New York as its playground and sent its title character on tour in one season), the transatlantic storyline of two famous ballet companies trading stars to bolster both their futures offers ripe opportunities to explore an even wider group of characters.

The creative pair has not lost their touch for creating compelling roles and finding entertaining ways into the story, leaning on the funny but also adding plenty of heart as the various struggles and romances come into play.

And with just eight episodes here, they handle the lion’s share of directorial duties, finding interesting ways to shoot both the big performances that anchor a couple of episodes but also focusing on the people behind the scenes.

The different cities’ settings provide appealing backdrops for the various story machinations.

The series’ cast is a mixture of players who have worked with the creators before, some acting veterans and interesting people who American audiences might not be so familiar with.

Luke Kirby, who was so good in a supporting role as Lenny Bruce on ‘Maisel’ here shoulders the lead role of Jack McMillan, the harried head of the New York Met ballet company. His family legacy is tied to the building and those who learn to dance within its walls, and he’s endlessly trying to figure out how to manage the gargantuan egos around him (his own is not exactly tiny).

Kirby is fantastic in the role, a mixture of stressed live wire and head cheerleader for the company, and he’s our guide into the world (his mother is played to perfection in a supporting turn from ‘Gilmore Girls’ Kelly Bishop).

Charlotte Gainsbourg is Geneviève Lavigne, Jack’s opposite number in Paris, who has her own issues to deal with. Gainsbourg brings energy and brio to the role, and her chemistry with Kirby is palpable.

Lou de Laâge as Cheyenne Toussaint in 'Étoile'. Credit: Philippe Antonello/Prime Video.
Lou de Laâge as Cheyenne Toussaint in ‘Étoile’. Credit: Philippe Antonello/Prime Video.

Lou de Laâge provides a bubble of French sarcasm as ace dancer Cheyenne Toussaint, the lead at the Paris company who is traded for a season to New York. She’s a tornado in a tutu (though rarely seen in one, since her dance costumes are much more subtle) and steals a number of the season’s best scenes, including one where she scares off prospective male dance partners by regaling them with a shocking story about her mother cutting off men’s genitals.

Elsewhere, there are reliable, funny turns from veteran British actors Simon Callow (as Crispin Shamblee, the billionaire of questionable ethics who funds the big trade) and fellow cast member from 1994 rom-com classic ‘Four Weddings and a FuneralDavid Haig as Nicholas Leutwylek, Jack’s hard-living, jovial creative director whose health and partying ways are a constant source of comedy.

And ‘Gilmore Girls’ fans will be happy to see the return of Yanic “Michel” Truesdale as Geneviève’s right hand man Raphaël Marchand. And yes, he displays nuclear levels of sarcasm himself at times.

    Final Thoughts

‘Étoile’ should instantly delight fans of the Sherman-Palladino-verse, and at a time when the arts are under attack in funding terms, it’s nice to celebrate the power of music and dance.

And with another season already commissioned, there’s more to look forward to, and hopefully it’ll undo one of the few mistakes of the season, a final episode plot twist that doesn’t quite make sense.

    6rXox1Lr

Currently available to stream on Prime Video is the third and final season of ‘Bosch: Legacy’, which is based on characters created by author Michael Connelly and is a continuation/spinoff of the groundbreaking seven season series, ‘Bosch’.

The series once again stars Titus Welliver (‘The Town’) as Harry Bosch, Madison Lintz (‘Parental Guidance’) as his daughter Maddie Bosch, and Mimi Rogers (‘The Mighty Quinn’) as Honey “Money” Chandler, as well original series actor Paul Calderón (‘King of New York’) reprising his role as Det. Jimmy Robertson.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actor Titus Welliver about his work on ‘Bosch: Legacy’ season 3, the decision to end the series, playing the character for the final time, if he is happy with how Harry’s story ends, if he will reprise his role on the upcoming spinoff ‘Ballard’ starring Maggie Q, and bringing back fan favorite characters like Paul Calderón’s Jimmy Robertson.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, as a hardcore fan, I’m heartbroken by the ending of ‘Bosch: Legacy’. Can you talk about the decision to end the series now, and what was it like for you to play this character for a final time?

Titus Welliver: Well, here’s the thing. I did not know that. Nobody knew that. We were already talking about what we were going to be doing in season 4. So, as Harry would say, “That’s above my pay grade”. I don’t know all the different machinations or reasons. Am I saddened by that? Deeply. You know, I love the people that I work with. I have formed a very close, deep bond with the character, even though he’s a fictional character. There’s a part of that that penetrates you to a certain degree when you do that. When you breathe life into a character, they become some sort of odd manifestation. So, I miss Harry. I really missed him. I know if I could get on the phone and call him, I would. I really do miss the character. I miss working with this group of people and the joy that it’s brought me for a decade was such a tremendous privilege.

MF: Without giving away any spoilers, can you talk about crafting Harry’s final moment on screen? How involved were you with that, and are you satisfied with how Harry’s story ends?

TW: No, because we were not aware at that point when we shot that. There’s no closure at all. That’s not atypical for ‘Bosch’. We would leave things kind of hanging. But as far as when you see the final scene, it’s not a ride off into the sunset. It’s not a so long. It feels like the end of a season, but it doesn’t feel like the end. As Harry would say, “Closure is a myth”. There is no closure. What it does do is it introduces the character of Renee Ballard, who’s played brilliantly by Maggie Q. She fully embodies the character, and it was such a tremendous pleasure working with her. We got to do some solid work together and laughed our asses off. She’s very deeply funny, and very gracious and generous as an actor. That relationship is introduced, and I think very well realized. So, in that regard and that they are doing this ‘Ballard’ show, I think it tees it up well for that, but it will not feel like this is teeing up for a spinoff. The only finality is that it’s the 10th episode, but there is no closure.

MF: So, here is the million-dollar question: With the ‘Ballard’ series in the works, is it possible that we could see you return as Harry Bosch on that series at some point?

TW: You never know. Hollywood is a strange and aerial place, right? There’s talk. Since this season has come out and it’s the final season clearly even on the poster and all the ads and everything. I have people coming up to me on the streets very vexed and not happy about it at all. But they’re also really enjoying this this season, which always makes me feel good because that’s what it is for. It is meant to entertain and to give our audiences that which they have invested so much time in, not only the viewers of the show, but the readers of the books. They get that it’s a kind of mutual gratification there. But the temperature in the public over the years has been very warm, and there’s a kind of personal connection that people feel with this character, which I find interesting. They feel a connection and a kind of ownership of the shows. I was just in in New York, and I had this one guy who was a New York cop say to me, “This is our show. We’ll let you know when we’re tired of watching it. So go back to these guys and tell them we’re not ready to go. We’ll let you know.” I was very moved by it, but it was also great because it was coming from a cop, and it had a genuine emotional tone to what he was saying. He wasn’t doing it with a smile. He was kind of emphatic in a way, which I was touched by.

MF: Finally, can you talk about how this season ties up loose ends from not only ‘Legacy’ but the original series as well, and having the opportunity to bring back fan favorite characters like, for example, Paul Calderón’s Jimmy Robertson?

TW: Paul Calderón and I have known each other for 30 years. Prior to even knowing him, I was always very aware of Paul. You know, we both come from New York. We’re New York theater guys and then we worked together a million years ago on a show called uh, ‘New York Undercover’. So we go that far back. His realization of the Jimmy Robertson character is an absolute chef’s kiss of work. First, you get an actor who brings a level of gravitas and we’ve been blessed over the years to have actors on the show that have a certain caliber. Obviously, any opportunity to see Crate (Gregory Scott Cummins) and Barrel (Troy Evans) again always brings a smile. I love those guys so dearly. I never had to really act with those guys. First, Troy Evans and I have known each other also for probably about 30 years and he and I are extremely close. Playing any element of humor or buoyancy with them, the hardest part of my job doing scenes with Troy and Greg was not losing it and cracking up because that was the banter that existed in between takes. We were all crying laughing. But to bring back Jimmy Robertson and then to circle back and that relationship between he and Bosch, their contemporaries, they are from the old school, and their relationship in the past has been contentious. He’s investigated Bosh once before and now he’s thrust into this. So, there’s mutual respect that exists there, but he saves Bosch’s life, and we see the beginning gestation of a different kind of relationship between those two characters. But Bosch maintains his silence about certain elements of things. Robertson respects that, but they move past that and the fact that Harry says, “Let’s do this again sooner than later”. So, as an audience remember, you go, “Oh, that’s cool. These guys, it’s not a love fest, but it’s a genuine relationship”. But we never get to see it realized and then his character is so suddenly taken out and that infuriates Bosch. So, then you see Bosch ignited into this parallel investigation, which leads and connects other threads. All cases are personal with Bosch, but I think in this season, when he’s hired to find this family that’s disappeared, any detective will tell you that all cases that they work, and I’m speaking particularly about murder cops, takes a piece of them. We see that with Harry and him looking into the abyss, but they will all say unanimously, the cases that haunt them are cases that involve children. So, Harry investigates the darkness probably deeper than he’s ever looked, maybe except for the times where he confronted the killer of his mother, and when he confronts Dockweiler, who kidnapped Maddie. We see an element of that with this. It penetrates him in a way. I think the audience will really worry and or question if this is something that will push Harry into a place of compromising his moral compass, which we know to be flawless, right? “Everybody counts or nobody counts”. But this one is very specific, and we see him unravel a bit.

    Preview:

    • Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ series is official at Amazon and Prime Video.
    • Summer H. Howell is close to a deal for the lead role.
    • The show will be a new adaptation of the classic Stephen King story.

For the last few years, aside from his big screen work, Mike Flanagan has been creating compelling horror tales for Netflix, including the likes of ‘Midnight Mass,’ ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’

But back in 2022, Amazon tempted Flanagan and producing partner Trevor Macy’s company Intrepid Pictures away with a lucrative, exclusive, multi-year overall series deal.

This is what the duo said at the time:

“Amazon is a studio that we have long admired. Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.”

And since the deal took shape, the pair has been quietly developing several projects, with the first now officially emerging, after being announced as in the works in October.

Amazon has officially ordered a series based on Stephen King’s novel ‘Carrie,’ which has previously been brought to screens a few times.

The most famous adaptation is Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie, which starred Sissy Spacek as the title character. A remake by Kimberly Peirce, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, landed in theaters in 2013.

There was also a 2002 TV movie version handled by David Carson, with Angela Bettis in the lead. Oh, and 1999 saw an attempt to craft a sequel, with ‘The Rage: Carrie 2,’ which didn’t feature the character, but continued the story after her death.

Given his history, we have faith in Flanagan coming up with something much more successful than the more recent efforts. Ready the blood bucket!

‘Carrie’ is Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel. Set in the town of Chamberlain, Maine, the plot follows Carrie White, a friendless high school girl from an abusive religious household who discovers she has telekinetic powers.

According to the official spiel, the show is described as, “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious powers.”

According to Variety, Summer H. Howell is nearing a deal to star in Flanagan’s series as Carrie.

Howell has form in the horror genre, having starred in the ‘Child’s Play’ franchise films ‘Curse of Chucky’ and ‘Cult of Chucky.’

She has also appeared in genre films such as ‘Hunter Hunter,’ ‘Spirit in the Blood,’ ‘Time Cut,’ and ‘Harland Manor,’ as well as multiple episodes of the scary anthology series ‘Channel Zero.’

On the lighter side of things, she starred in the Disney+ film ‘Clouds,’ which was based on the acclaimed memoir ‘Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom’s Small Prayer in a Big Way’ by Laura Sobiech.

In more confirmed news, Siena Agudong has landed the role of popular high schooler Sue Snell.

In the novel and subsequent film adaptation, Sue initially joins in bullying Carrie but later decides to try to befriend her. Amy Irving played the character in the original film and ‘The Rage: Carrie 2,’ with Kandyse McClure and Gabriella Wilde playing her in subsequent ‘Carrie’ movies.

Agudong most recently starred in the Tubi movie ‘The QB and Me,’ which she also executive produced. She was also the female lead in Kevin Smith’s coming-of-age film ‘The 4:30 Movie.’

With the show now officially announced, team Amazon is naturally happy to talk about it.

Here’s Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios:

“ ‘Carrie’ is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance. With Mike Flanagan at the helm and the accomplished team assembled including executive producer Trevor Macy this provocative series is sure to captivate our global customers.”

Flanagan’s current movie is another King-derived project, ‘The Life of Chuck.’

Starring the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Matthew Lillard, Karen Gillan, Molly C. Quinn, David Dastmalchian and Chiwetel Ejiofor, it’s described as “a life-affirming, genre-bending story based on Stephen King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz.”

‘The Life of Chuck’ will be on screens on June 6th.

He’s also in pre-production on a new movie based on classic horror ‘The Exorcist,’ having taken over shepherding that particular franchise for Universal from David Gordon Green.

And beyond that, he wrote the script for DC Studios and Warner Bros.’ ‘Clayface’ movie, which has ‘Speak No Evil’ filmmaker James Watkins in the director’s chair.

When will the ‘Carrie’ TV series be on screens?

Eight episodes of the show have been ordered and production is scheduled for this summer in Vancouver, but there is no official premiere date for ‘Carrie’ just yet.

    Preview:

    • Guy Ritchie has agreed to direct the ‘Road House’ sequel.
    • Jake Gyllenhaal will be back as Dalton.
    • Amazon MGM Studios is once more backing the movie.

There is increasing evidence that filmmaker Guy Ritchie has either cracked the secret of cloning, owns one of the Time-Turners from ‘Harry Potter’ or has simply given up on the idea of sleep or seeing his family.

This is, after all, the man who directed five films in the last four years, and has three films potentially set for release this year (‘Fountain of Youth,’ ‘Wife & Dog,’ and ‘In the Grey’), and that’s before mentioning the Paramount+ series ‘MobLand,’ which recently started streaming, and ‘The Gentlemen,’ renewed for season 2 at Netflix.

And if all that wasn’t enough, he’s also taking on another assignment, as Puck and World of Reel have confirmed that Ritchie will be behind the camera for Amazon MGM’s sequel to 2024’s ‘Road House’ remake, which will once again star Jake Gyllenhaal.

What’s the story of ‘Road House’?

The 1989 original, directed by Rowdy Herrington, starred Patrick Swayze in the story of a roadside dive called The Double Deuce, a sleazy music joint in the small town of Jasper, Missouri, “the kind of place where they sweep up the eyeballs after closing”.

The owner, tired of his place being wrecked by muscle-bound “power drinkers” and provocative bimbos, hires the best bouncer in the business (Swayze’s Dalton) to cool things down. Famously, he starts off charming but doesn’t hesitate to take extreme throat-ripping measures when pushed to his limit.

For the 2024 re-invention, Gyllenhaal took on the slightly adjusted role of Dalton, this time a former UFC fighter looking to find new meaning in his life who finds work as a bouncer at a property owned by Frankie (Jessica Williams).

Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry wrote the new movie took place at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but “soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.”

In the cast alongside Gyllenhaal were the likes of Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp and Bob Menery.

Directing that one was Doug Liman, and behind-the-scenes drama, as producer Joel Silver was removed for aggressive behavior, Liman denounced the plan to release the movie direct to streaming (he’s since made peace with the idea) and a lawsuit from the writer of the original that claimed the new movie was simply a grab at keeping the IP.

Still, the movie became a big hit for Amazon, drawing 2.3 million households between March 21st, which is when it was added to the Prime Video library, and March 24th.

    What of the sequel?

At Amazon’s Upfront presentation last May –– where it promotes its upcoming movies and shows to advertisers to encourage them to purchase pricey spots on its service –– the company announced that a ‘Road House’ sequel was in the early stages of development.

This is what Amazon film boss Jennifer Salke said at the event:

“As we saw this spring the world went crazy for a little movie called ‘Road House’. Nearly 80 million viewers globally have watched ‘Road House.’ We like to watch this these results like a baby.”

Ritchie certainly feels like the right person to handle this, as he’s used to tough-guy movies that have a little more going on under the surface.

And he and Gyllenhaal have a prior working relationship –– the actor starred in the director’s 2023 war movie ‘The Covenant’ and they’ve reunited for this year’s ‘In the Grey,’ which sees two extraction specialists having to chart a route of escape for a senior female negotiator.

Given the subject matter and the established connection between director and star, hopes are likely high that things will go much more smoothly this time around.

Will Beall is at work on the script for the sequel, which is a mystery for now –– though a mid-credits scene in the 2024 movie showed Conor McGregor’s villain Knox wreaking havoc at a hospital and escaping unscathed, so presumably that rematch is something that could well be picked up for the new movie.

As for other cast members? No word yet on returning veterans or newcomers.

There is no information yet as to a release date for the new movie.

But perhaps the more interesting question is, where will the ‘Road House’ movie be on screens? Given the success of the 2024 outing, there’s a big chance that Amazon could decide that the best place for a follow-up is to premiere right alongside it on the Prime Video streaming service.

But with the company’s much-vaunted commitment to theatrical releases, as touted during its CinemaCon presentation last week, perhaps having a Gyllenhaal movie in cinemas is no bad strategy –– especially if it drives people to then check out the movie on streaming. We’ve a feeling, though, that it’ll be the former option.
