  • ‘Furious 7’ Will Win the Best Picture Oscar, Says Vin Diesel

An Alternative Look At The 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - ArrivalsThe “Fast and Furious” franchise isn’t known for its subtlety, and true to form, its star is making a bold claim about the series’s upcoming seventh installment.

In an interview with Variety, Vin Diesel declared that “Furious 7” would take awards season by storm — and snag a Best Picture Oscar statuette, too.

“Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie,” Diesel told the trade. “It will probably win best picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever.”

We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that Diesel’s claim won’t come true (the Oscars have been struggling with relevancy lately, after all), though it wouldn’t be a “Fast” movie without some hyperbole surrounding the flick. As Diesel puts it, the film’s handling of co-star Paul Walker‘s passing should elevate it to the same level as the more artsy fare favored by the Academy.

“This will win best picture. There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing,” Diesel told Variety. He expanded on that thought:

We were successful in one-upping the action sequences, and adding an interesting dynamic to the world. But what the world won’t anticipate is how emotionally powerful the movie is. The head of the studio, Ron Meyer, often said when ‘Fast 5’ or ‘Fast 6’ came out, ‘If there was no number attached to these movies, they would be contenders for best picture.’ And when people see ‘Furious 7,’ they are going to agree.

Fans can judge for themselves when “Furious 7” hits theaters on April 3.

  • Vin Diesel Pays Tribute to Paul Walker at ‘Furious 7’ Screening

World Premiere Of Fast & Furious 6Vin Diesel has been vocal about his grief over the sudden passing of co-star Paul Walker, and continued to pay tribute to his late friend during a recent screening of their last film together, “Furious 7.”

At the event, which took place in Los Angeles last week, Diesel told attendees that the film was a “labor of love” that honored Walker. “Furious 7” was in the middle of filming when Walker, 39, died in a car crash in November 2013, delaying production.

“It was in some ways the hardest movie I ever had to do because the relationships that you see on film are so real,” Diesel said at the screening. “When the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend. I lost my brother.”

Diesel added that cast and crew “made this movie from our hearts,” and said that the film was “our gift” to the fans, as well as Walker.

“Furious 7” will be dedicated to Walker’s memory. It’s due in theaters on April 3.

  • ‘Furious 7’ Teaser Shows Skydiving Cars, Because Why Not?

paul walker in furious 7Never let it be said that the “Furious” franchise is content to rest on its laurels when it comes to insane action scenarios. Sure, there was a plane stunt in “Fast and Furious 6,” but somehow “Furious 7” one-ups that airborne craziness with the sort of thing that makes a normal person’s palms sweat.

In this extended clip, Dominic (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), Tej (Ludacris), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) are gearing up for some skydiving, but as usual, there’s a twist. They’re planning to drive their cars backwards off of a plane, launch themselves (still in their cars!) into the air, and just pray that their parachutes don’t fail them. Roman is understandably reluctant to join them in this foolhardy caper, but his pals have other plans for him. Yeah, hold on tight if you’re afraid of heights.

“Furious 7” opens on April 3.

  • This New ‘Furious 7’ Trailer Is Totally Bonkers (VIDEO)

Yes, all of the “Fast and the Furious” movies have been, to one degree or another, completely insane. This is a franchise that started off as a kind of drag racing riff on “Point Break” and turned into one of the most elaborately engineered action franchises in the history of cinema. But “Furious 7,” opening in April, seems to take that to an almost uncomfortable degree. In the new trailer alone, there are cars flying out of the back of planes, a car jumping between two Abu Dhabi skyscrapers, and The Rock flying out of a building and onto a car (there’s always a car). “This time, it ain’t just about being fast,” Vin Diesel growls in the 3-minute trailer. Yeah, this is going to be ridiculously awesome and awesomely ridiculous.

There’s so much to love about this trailer and it’s so full of stuff, that I almost wish I hadn’t watched it. The “Fast and Furious” franchise is one of the most purely enjoyable in movies right now, and with this new entry carrying the bittersweet tinge of being the send off for Paul Walker‘s Bryan character, well, it could also be the best of the bunch. (Also heartening: the fact that the movie’s template has been switched up, yet again, to resemble a revenge movie and James Wan, director of the superb “The Conjuring,” is behind the wheel.) As Tyrese says, “This right here, takes crazy to a whole ‘nother level.” After you watch the trailer, you’ll handily agree.

    Just watch it.
