Locking in a cast for a relatively lower budget movie can be a challenge, but it certainly helps when you have the Oscar-winning pedigree of ‘Spotlight’ filmmaker Tom McCarthy.

Deadline brings word that he’s got quite the cast for his latest, which will star the likes of Paul Rudd (‘Ant-Man’), Paul Giamatti (‘Sideways’) and Tatiana Maslany (‘Orphan Black’).

And that’s just a small sample; the ensemble will also include Evan Peters (‘American Horror Story’), Amy Ryan (‘Birdman’), John Turturro (‘Severance’) and Jason Clarke (‘Zero Dark Thirty’).

What’s the story of Tom McCarthy’s new movie?

McCarthy worked alongside Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré to adapt Nathaniel Rich’s book ‘Losing Earth’, and the true story is set at a beachside resort in Florida in 1980, when twenty experts gather for a weekend conference on a global issue that is starting to gain traction: the effects of Co2 emissions on the climate.

The group of scientists, activists, and policymakers have one simple mandate from Congress — write a statement about what to do. Easier said than done.

The actor/writer/director is scheduled to start the cameras cranking next month on what is described as a darkly comic drama.

In addition to ‘Spotlight, which won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 2016 Academy Awards, McCarthy has also directed movies including ‘The Visitor’, ‘Stillwater’ and ‘The Cobbler’.

As a writer he’s worked on the likes of ‘The Station Agent’ and ‘Million Dollar Arm’ and keeps his hand in as an actor, appearing recently on ‘The Lowdown’ and ‘The Friend’.

    • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ won the weekend’s box office again.
    • ‘Marty Supreme’ nabbed third place.
    • ‘Song Sung Blue’ and ‘Anaconda’ also debuted.

As we’ve learned before with ‘Avatar’ movies, it’s not necessarily the launch, it’s the hold. A key phrase among the films’ Na’vi characters is “I see you,” and audiences certainly came out to see the third entry, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ with the title staying top of the box office for a second weekend.

Across the Christmas holiday weekend, James Cameron’s latest took in a solid $64 million over the traditional weekend and $88 million since the Christmas holiday on Thursday.

That three-day earning marks a 28% decline from its $89 million launch, a stronger hold than 2022’s ‘The Way of Water’ managed.

As mentioned above, the third entry is holding on well. So far, it has earned more than $217.7 million domestically and shows little sign of slowing down.

Worldwide, thanks to strong business in places such as China, the movie has now crossed $760 million, indicating that it should at the very least pass the $1 billion mark. Will it push past $2 billion like its predecessors? That’s trickier to predict.

Still, while some may deride the franchise for having little cultural impact, crowds certainly turn out for it.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

There was also good news for star Timothée Chalamet and director Josh Safdie, as ‘Marty Supreme’, which expanded and enjoyed the best numbers among “newcomers” in third place with $17.4 million from 2,600 theaters over the weekend and $27.1 million through the four-day holiday frame.

Domestic ticket sales stand at $28.3 million after a weekend in limited release. The three-day figure marks the second-biggest opening weekend to date for A24.

Still, second was Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ which has been one of the year’s success stories. The animated sequel took in $20 million over the weekend and $25.2 million since Christmas Day. In total worldwide, it has now earned $1.42 billion.

Fourth was ‘The Housemaid’ with $15.4 million for the weekend, ahead of new arrival ‘Anaconda’ in sixth. The action comedy, which features Paul Rudd and Jack Black, made $14.6 million over the weekend and has taken $23.7 million since Christmas. The movie also opened internationally with $20 million for a global start of $43.7 million.

Also new to the charts was ‘Song Sung Blue,’ which stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in the based-on-truth tale of Neil Diamond tribute musicians. That earned $7.6 million over the weekend in eighth place and $12 million through the four-day holiday frame.

No one will ever mistake the original ‘Anaconda’ for a good movie, and even the 1997 film itself doesn’t pretend to be one. With its random cast (Jennifer Lopez! Ice Cube! Jon Voight!), intentional silliness, and wacky premise, the movie leans into its own absurdity and ends up becoming one of those cult classics that fans adore for its ridiculousness (it was also a decent box office hit and spawned a raft of even worse sequels).

Fortunately, the filmmakers behind the new ‘Anaconda’ understand the assignment: the movie, directed by Tom Gormican (‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’), can only be described as a meta-reboot, in which the film both makes (loving) fun of its subject and becomes part of the pantheon itself. With comic sure things Paul Rudd and Jack Black leading the cast, the new ‘Anaconda’ is full of laughs for the first two-thirds of its running time – until it runs out of gas – and is actually even a sweet-natured homage to friendship and the love of making movies.

Ronald ‘Griff’ Griffen Jr. (Paul Rudd) is a struggling actor (his claim to fame is a few episodes of ‘S.W.A.T.’) who returns home from Hollywood to Buffalo, New York for the surprise birthday party of his friend Doug McCallister (Jack Black). Doug writes screenplays at night but shoots wedding videos by day (although his idea to turn one into a horror movie is shot down by the less-than-enthusiastic couple), and is worried about being stuck in the job forever – until Griff comes to the rescue.

At lunch with Doug and two of their other old friends – recent divorcee Claire (Thandiwe Newton) and Doug’s sometimes assistant, the dissolute Kenny (Steve Zahn) – Griff announces that he’s gotten hold of the rights to the original ‘Anaconda,’ their favorite movie as youths, and proposes that the four of them head to Brazil and ‘reboot the thing indie style.’ With the loving support of his wife (Ione Skye), Doug agrees to direct, while Griff and Claire will star and Kenny will co-produce (or something like that).

With a budget of $35,000 (their initial $2 million figure got shot down by a local bank), the foursome head to the Amazon, where they rent both a boat and an anaconda, along with his slightly obsessive owner and trainer (Selton Mello). At first the shoot seems to go swimmingly, but then they learn that the presumed captain of the boat (Daniela Melchior) is not who she appears to be, that Griff hasn’t been entirely honest with them – and that there is a real giant anaconda in hot pursuit of them.

The plot – director Tom Gormican co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Etten – is little more than nonsense, but it’s fun nonsense and the laughs come steadily for much of the film’s first hour or so. It’s an excuse for (mainly) Rudd and Black to riff on the original movie, and the meta factor gets even more byzantine when they learn that there are real bad guys on the river behind them and a real monster snake lurking in the depths as well: Doug writes it into the script, prompting an awestruck Griff to proclaim, ‘You could be the white Jordan Peele.’

It’s only when ‘Anaconda’ turns into a semi-real action movie in its final third – with chases and explosions and lots more of the CG title beastie, which is almost an afterthought for the film’s first hour – that the movie’s charm and goofy energy begin to flag. Well, truth be told, it kind of starts to wane halfway through, but there are enough jokes to carry it along until the more conventional pyrotechnics of the third act take over, along with a not-unexpected but still rather awkward cameo.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Need we say more? Both actors are well within their comfort zone here. Rudd does his ‘middle-aged man struggling to find his way’ routine effortlessly, while Black does his ‘insane middle-aged man struggling to find his way’ act equally well. There is a lot of charm and chemistry between the two of them, and even though Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn are underwritten (especially the former), the quartet do manage to generate some of the joy of old friends having fun together and making a movie – that old ‘let’s put on a show’ vibe still comes through.

Brazilian actor Selton Mello has a few chances to steal the show with his not-quite-all-there anaconda trainer, but even he doesn’t quite pull it off, he manages to imbue the character of Santiago with some genuine empathy – even if his relationship with his snake seems a tad unnatural.

All we can add about ‘Anaconda’ is that we went into the movie with low expectations (or, really, no expectations) and ended up having a good time. While there have been a handful of excellent comedies released in 2025, those films – like ‘Splitsville’ or ‘Friendship’ – have focused on the toxic side of relationships, whether between lovers or friends.

The relationships in ‘Anaconda’ are not particularly toxic, and the friends are rather quick to forgive each other. Of course, none of the actions they take are remotely believable or smart – especially when the anaconda is chasing them – but that’s part of their appeal too. We laughed a lot at ‘Anaconda,’ and the movie embraces its source material and its own identity with the right attitude.

‘Anaconda’ receives a score of 75 out of 100.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you both say to movie goers sitting down right now in a theater to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Jack Black: Now, I got to prepare you with a warning. If you are susceptible to jump scares, if you are terrified easily, if you have a heart condition, don’t see this movie, because it is legit scary. If you have an aversion to laughter, if something makes you laugh too hard and you might pass out, do not go to this movie. It is huge laughs and huge scares. You have been warned.

MF: Paul, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and this meta-approach to rebooting the franchise?

Paul Rudd: So, my reaction was just giddiness. I loved it. I thought it was funny and original. It was such a fun read that I went back and just read it again and it was enjoyable. I also knew that it was made and written by the guys that did ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, which was a movie that I loved and saw four times. So, one of the things that I loved about that movie was it was very clever and self-aware. Nicolas Cage is so funny playing himself and I loved how this thing starts to weirdly morph into a Nicolas Cage movie, like an action movie. I thought it was just a very clever approach. So that these guys were taking another similarly unique and funny way to deal with movie remakes, but it’s not really a remake. It’s commenting on a lot of that stuff and doing it in a very meta and funny way.

MF: Jack, what was your reaction to this unusual approach to rebooting ‘Anaconda’?

Jack Black: I was like, dude, if we can make a movie that’s half as compelling and funny and interesting as ‘Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, then sign me up. Because I saw that movie and I was like, holy cannoli, I’m jealous.

MF: Jack, you have appeared in the same movies as Paul before, but never starred opposite him in a film. What was it like to get to finally work together on a big scale comedy like this?

Jack Black: I mean, that was a big draw for me because I’ve always felt like me and Paul would be great together. I’ve been a huge fan of his as he knows, I tell him.

(L to R) Jack Black and Paul Rudd on the set of Columbia Pictures’ 'Anaconda'. Photo: Bradley Patrick. © 2025 CTMG, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

MF: Finally, Paul, anything you want to add about having a chance to work with Jack after all these years.

Paul Rudd: It makes people uncomfortable how much Jack and I fawn over one another like broken records. You want me to fawn over Jack? Easy. Per square inch, there isn’t a person out there that has more talent packed in to one gorgeous case. Jack is a talent tornado. He’s a comedy tsunami. He’s not just an actor. He’s not just a comedian. He’s not just a rock God. He’s the kindest, most brilliant, beautiful human being and those are rare in this business. If you ask anybody who’s met him, they’ll say the same thing. He’s a unicorn. So, anytime this comes around, I’m ready to jump on those coattails like that.

    • Dates for ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘The Dog Stars’ were also confirmed.

Turns out, making two giant ‘Avengers’ movies back to back is going to take a little longer than originally thought.

Disney and Marvel have announced that the next two team-up films from the comic book behemoth are now set to arrive a little later in theaters than originally planned –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shifting from a planned May 5th, 2026 slot to December 18th, 2026.

Likewise, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will now decamp from a May 5th, 2027 release date to –– you guessed it! –– December 18th that year.

Clearly, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have decided the new movies will require some more work than they figured. Which honestly, is no bad thing –– better to wait and get it right in the hopes of an ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’-level success, than pump out something quickly.

The sprawling cast for at least the first movie (we’re expecting several to appear in both) was first announced in a viral video Marvel put online showing director’s chairs with the actor’s names on them.

    So who can we expect?

On the longstanding MCU front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who also appeared in ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (the main character of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who recurred in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, while Lewis Pullman, introduced as “Bob” (the character we now know as Sentry), is part of the new cast.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now. And Danny Ramirez, who was introduced as Joaquim Torres in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and reprised the role in February’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will show up as the new Falcon.

On the recent addition front, there’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ which will introduce the iconic team to the MCU on July 25th.

Any surprises? We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair was among the others.

Finally, there’s the even more unexpected likes of Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

And talking of the original Fox X-Men line-up, he’s not alone, as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden were also announced.

Channing Tatum as Gambit in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. Photo: Marvel Studios.

Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit.

Finally, because you can’t really have ‘Doomsday’ without Doom, Robert Downey Jr. is making his big MCU return, this time playing classic ‘Fantastic Four’ villain Doctor Doom.

We’re sure more cast will be announced before ‘Doomsday’ arrives, but Disney has more time to get the message out.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.
    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

And that creative spark extended to regular collaborator Stephen McFeely, who is also back writing the new movies.

While other co-writer Christopher Markus is so far sticking with the Russos’ AGBO company to keep it running, McFeely was tempted back into the MCU machine.

    Here’s what Joe told Empire:

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

(L to R) Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and Kevin Feige present 'Avengers: Secret Wars' at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars,’ so this one made sense.

What other movie release dates were announced?

In a Thanos-like snap, three Marvel dates have disappeared from the calendar completely. The place holders for February 13th, 2026, November 6th, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have all been removed from Disney’s calendar, pointing towards the result of Marvel’s commitment to quality over quantity.

It wasn’t all Marvel changes –– Disney also confirmed the dates for some of the movies headed our way via its 20th Century Studios, including Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars,’ starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin. That one will be released on March 27th, 2026.

Then there is sequel ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ which will see the return of Meryl Streep‘s imperious magazine editor Miranda Priestly as she navigates the challenges of the declining print industry. The comedy drama sequel is due on May 1st, 2026.

Finally, the company has scheduled an IMAX/3D re-release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ which is set for October 3rd this year, laying the groundwork for the upcoming ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ on December 19th.

    • Who will Sam Wilson recruit for his new team?

SPOILER ALERT: Some spoilers for ‘Thunderbolts*’ and possibly ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ below.

Back in April, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced at CinemaCon that the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ “will focus on The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and original X-Men all fighting Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.).”

That’s quite a promise! But now that ‘Thunderbolts*’ has been released in theaters, fans have learned that they are really the New Avengers, and the movie’s end-credit scene reveals that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) has filed a copyright claim against the team for the rights to the name and is putting together his own group of Avengers.

Marvel has recently announced that Wilson will assemble his Avengers off screen, so the real question is who will be on his team in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’? Luckily, Marvel has also released many of the names of ‘Doomsday’s cast in a recent video stunt, which could, by process of elimination, give us a basic idea of who will be on Wilson’s team.

With other new and returning cast members yet to be announced, Moviefone is breaking down the cast list to guess who could be on Sam Wilson’s Avengers team.

The end of the ‘Thunderbolts*’ sees Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine saving public face by holding a press conference and announcing that Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Bob Reynolds/Sentry (Lewis Pullman) are the New Avengers.

With Pugh, Stan, Russell, John-Kamen, Harbour, and Pullman all confirmed to return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, it is now clear that they will be referred to as the New Avengers and not the Thunderbolts, nor will they be members of the team Sam Wilson is recruiting. In fact, it was also recently revealed that the ‘Thunderbolts*’ end-credit scene setting up the Fantastic Four’s MCU arrival was shot on the set of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ by directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

Now that we know the Thunderbolts are the New Avengers, and assuming none of them will crossover to Sam’s new team, it’s not hard to have an idea who might be recruited by the new Captain America for his Avengers team.

We can also eliminate the cast of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and the returning ‘X-Men’ actors, as one would assume that they will be on their own teams and not Sam’s. It is possible that Channing Tatum‘s Gambit could crossover, since he was not an “original” X-men from the previous films, but I think he will most likely be on the Mutants’ side, especially because the character has no ties to the Avengers in the comics.

As a founding member of the original Avengers, it makes sense that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor would be a member of Sam’s new team. Sam partied with him at Avengers Tower in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, and even fought side by side against Thanos with Thor in Wakanda during ‘Infinity War’. We also know that Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres/Falcon was asked to join the team by Sam during the events of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, so it’s safe to say that you can expect to see him fighting as a member of Sam’s new team in ‘Doomsday’.

Besides Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Bucky Barnes, Paul Rudd‘s Scott Lang/Ant-Man is probably the Avenger that Sam is closest to in the MCU having appeared in 2015’s ‘Ant-Man’ and helping to recruit him for Captain America’s team in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. So, it would also make sense for Scott to join Sam’s team. Sam also has close ties to Wakanda, with Shuri (Letitia Wright) helping to create his Captain America suit and wings. Now that she is the new Black Panther, I also assume she will be on the new team as well.

Actor Winston Duke has been confirmed to return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as M’Baku, and while it is possible for him to be recruited for Sam’s team along with Shuri, Feige’s CinemaCon comment mentions “Wakandans fighting against Doctor Doom”, which makes me think he will be leading the Wakandans and not joining Sam’s team.

Having been introduced in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, and having a close connection to Shuri, I would also bet that Tenoch Huerta Mejia’s Namor will appear on Sam’s new team. Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, who was introduced in his own 2021 movie will most likely join the team as well. The end-credit scene for that movie saw the character being recruited for the Avengers by Wong (Benedict Wong), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), making his inclusion almost a forgone conclusion.

Of the announced cast, that just leaves Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, but given how his character’s arc ends in season 2 of Disney+’s ‘Loki’, I’m guessing he won’t be a member of Sam’s team and instead saved for a different role in the movie.

Who could be on Sam Wilson’s Avengers team that has not been announced yet for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

(L to R) Charlize Theron and Benedict Cumberbatch in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' Photo: Marvel Studios.
(L to R) Charlize Theron and Benedict Cumberbatch in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Photo: Marvel Studios.

There have been rumors that Wong, who is now the Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange’s absence, could appear in the movie. Rumors have also swirled around the eventual return of Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner/Hulk, and with their inclusion in the ‘Shang-Chi’ end credit scene, if they are added to the cast, all three characters could align themselves with Sam Wilson and his new team of Avengers.

There have also been rumors of Benedict Cumberbatch and Charlize Theron returning as Doctor Strange and Clea, respectively, both last seen in 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. But, with Wong being the new Sorcerer Supreme, I doubt Strange and Clea will join Sam’s team, and more likely, just like Loki, would have a different role in the plot of the film.

Finally, there have also been rumors about Jeremy Renner’s return as Hawkeye, and Tom Holland’s return as Spider-Man. But we’ve also heard that Holland’s character may sit out ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, next appearing in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ before returning for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

And with Renner’s recent admission that he declined returning for ‘Hawkeye’ season 2 due to having his salary cut in half by Marvel, his return to the franchise is completely up in the air. Even if he does return, Renner could be playing a multiverse version of his character and therefore not be joining Sam’s new team.

‘Friendship’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters May 9 is ‘Friendship,’ directed by Andrew DeYoung and starring Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, Billy Bryk, and Jon Glaser.

There may be no better combination of actor and director this year than that of Tim Robinson and Andrew DeYoung. The former, who stars in and created the cringe comedy sketch show ‘I Think You Should Leave,’ is the perfect embodiment of Craig Waterman, the disagreeable, terminally awkward, and uncomfortable-in-his-own-skin main character in DeYoung’s feature directorial and writing debut, ‘Friendship.’

Also starring Paul Rudd in a typically charismatic yet slightly sour take on the kind of suave, in-control “guy’s guy” that he’s parodied in films like ‘Anchorman’ (which gets a nod here as Rudd’s character also works on a local news broadcast), ‘Friendship’ riotously focuses on the often-strained nature of male relationships in a culture that downplays the value of real human connection and emphasizes the paranoia and one-upmanship that underlies neighborly bonhomie.

    Story and Direction

“There’s a new Marvel out…it’s supposed to be nuts,” says Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson) to his disaffected son Steven (Jack Dylan Grazer) as Craig slumps in his usual chair in the Waterman family living room. For Craig, seeing a “new Marvel” together is the only means he can bond with his boy, who’s already seen the movie and is increasingly disinterested in any kind of shared activity with his dad at all. Meanwhile, Craig’s wife Tami (Kate Mara) has a perfect way to get Craig out of his sedentary routine: a package has accidentally been delivered to their house that’s meant for their new neighbor down the street, and she sees sending Craig over there with the package as a means to get him out of the house and perhaps make a new friend.

And that’s exactly what happens – for a brief time, anyway. Schlubby, dyspeptic Craig trundles down his icy suburban street – located in “Clovis, USA,” wherever that is, and peppered with houses seemingly trapped in the ‘70s – with the package and finds out that the new neighbor is Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd – is Ant-Man in that “new Marvel”?), a slick weatherman on the local news program. Austin seems like everything Craig is not: quick-witted, fit, stylish (to a point), philosophical, yet fun – the kind of guy everyone wants to hang out with. So imagine Craig’s delight when he does just that – a whirlwind courtship, as it were — and is even invited to a get-together at Austin’s house with some other male friends.

But it’s not very long before Craig – whose own boring day job entails making phone apps more addictive for users – makes a buffoon of himself, his own lack of social skills, etiquette, and composure alienating Austin and his friends even though Craig has pretty much fallen in love with his new buddy. Their short-lived bromance turns so sour so fast that Craig begins swirling down a deep drain of his own paranoia, lack of self-confidence, and humiliation, which threatens to drag down the rest of his family and whatever rickety sense of normalcy his life still has.

If this sounds grim, well, it is – kind of. There’s an underlying darkness to this material that could quite possibly be twisted into a horror tale. That impression is buttressed by the general wintry chill of the neighborhood and the dated, drab look of the homes there, inside and out. But DeYoung isn’t after dread – at least not dread alone. He wants to dissect the strange nature of male relationships, perhaps the hardest to cultivate and maintain in a society where honest connection is ever so fleeting. Austin and his friend gather in Austin’s mancave for an evening that segues from support group emotional catharsis to low-key, safe space fight club antics, but Craig is not equipped to pivot and adjust. He’s either going to blow or collapse, hilariously doing a little of both in a sequence that’s deeply uproarious, disorienting, and surreal at the same time.

That’s pretty much the tone that DeYoung and his nimble cast establish throughout ‘Friendship’ – a mixture of behavior both disturbing and hysterically funny. There is heart and real pain in the movie as well – embodied by Tami and even in some instances by Craig – but Craig’s escalating fury and hurt toward Austin, which wrecks everything around him, veer squarely in the direction of black comedy. One could argue that Tim Robinson’s style might work better in small doses – there are moments when one becomes exhausted with Craig’s conduct – but DeYoung keeps the individual gags funny enough and the narrative unpredictable enough to sustain a feature film.

    Cast and Performances

Tim Robinson is perhaps the very definition of an acquired taste as an actor, but there’s no question that he was born to play Craig Waterman. Self-centered, irritating, passive-aggressive, at times almost dangerously unbalanced, and yet oddly vulnerable, Craig is a difficult character to like but one who – through Robinson’s perfectly calibrated performance – you can’t take your eyes off (even as he makes you squirm). Craig’s almost complete lack of self-awareness and increasingly volatile emotional state mask his desperate need for connection, which makes the character as human as he is unhinged.

While Robinson’s Craig is fascinating to watch in a car-crash kind of way, Paul Rudd’s seemingly bottomless well of charisma and comic timing make his Austin Carmichael almost comforting. But there’s a subtle streak of meanness in him that belies his own surface cool and reveals his personal insecurity. While this initially seems like the kind of performance that Rudd could give in his sleep at this point, there is more complexity to it than first meets the eye.

Although this is in many ways a two-hander for Robinson and Rudd, kudos must also go to Kate Mara for also delivering one of the more intricate performances of her career. Mara hasn’t always had the chance to shine, but she does here as Tami, her seemingly endless patience for her husband and general kind-heartedness also hiding deep disappointment, embarrassment, and ultimately anger. Not only does Andrew DeYoung get fantastic work from his three leads, but every character is written to be memorable in their own way, right down to the mobile phone store clerk who runs a drug business in the back.

    Final Thoughts

‘Friendship’ is not for everyone. It’s a genuinely weird movie and some viewers may find themselves wondering why they are investing 100 minutes of their time into a protagonist as frequently anxiety-inducing as Craig Waterman. But that’s the point: we all know someone like that – and we may be that person for somebody else. The movie is about the very real struggle all of us face to forge true, lasting bonds with others through the walls of our own fears, prejudices, and self-doubts.

‘Friendship’ is primarily about men in that regard, but it’s a universal theme as well. And it’s also laugh-out-loud funny, with healthy bouts of cringe-inducing comedy throughout. Andrew DeYoung and Tim Robinson have created one of the more original comedies we’ve seen in a while, and we wouldn’t mind seeing this creative, er, friendship continue from here.

  • Marvel Confirms the Cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

    Preview:

    • Marvel has revealed the main cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • It’s a mix of returning names and (relatively) new recruits.
    • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027.

While Marvel usually prefers to keep its secrets close (at least, closer than the current government seems to manage), there is also the conflicting compulsion to promote the next movie in its sprawling cinematic universe, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

We’ve known for a while that the Avengers will be back to face the threat of Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), but the rest of the cast was largely in the realm of speculation, even for those who have been part of the MCU family for years.

The company used a livestream to confirm who will show up in the new movie, consisting of footage of the backs of director’s chairs featuring the cast names.

And those names? A mixture of established actors and some of the more recent recruits.

On the longstanding front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who is back on our screens this year in May 2nd’s ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (likewise part of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who will also recur in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

We’re happy to see Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now.

We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair is among the others (not dripping with water –– missed joke opportunity there!).

Lashana Lynch and Kelsey Grammer in 'The Marvels'.
(L to R) Lashana Lynch and Kelsey Grammer in ‘The Marvels’. Photo: Marvel Studios.

And Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

There’s no word yet on whether this means his version of Beast will be the final MCU variant, but with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden also announced, the X-Men clearly have a presence. Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit. No sign of Ryan Reynolds or Hugh Jackman, though.

Lewis Pullman, who is introduced as a character called “Bob” (but who has since been revealed to be powerful character Sentry) in ‘Thunderbolts*’ is also listed. So we’re guessing his character –– who also appears to be an antagonist in the movie given the new trailer –– factors in somehow.

Last, but by no means least, the doors to the cavernous soundstage holding all the chairs opens up, and in strides Downey Jr., who sits in his own named chair and puts his finger to his lips. It’s over!

We’re sure there will be other announcements to come –– the company loves to hold back cameos and other roles, so we’ll have to wait and see if Tom Holland or Mark Ruffalo spoil the appearances or if an official press release arrives in due time.

If you’re desperate to see the Livestream, please click on the video player at the top of the page.

The new movie is now kicking off shooting in London, with Marvel veteran directors Joe and Anthony Russo –– who count the giant two previous Avengers outings ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ on their shared resume –– back marshalling the chaos that is a team-up movie on this scale.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

Of course, one of the biggest plot elements for the new movies has already been revealed on Marvel’s terms, with Robert Downey Jr. taking the stage at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to confirm he’s playing Victor Von Doom.

And according to the directors he’s very involved in helping to shape the character.

This is what they told Entertainment Tonight:

“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”

And following ‘Doomsday,’ we’ll see ‘Secret Wars’…

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

Marvel is planning to have ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on screens on May 1st, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on May 7th, 2027.
