  • TV Review: ‘Poker Face’

Premiering with its first four episodes on Peacock on January 26th, ‘Poker Face’ marks Rian Johnson’s latest successful stab at the mystery genre.

The filmmaker, who made his name with Sundance sensation ‘Brick’, has often tackled mysteries in his work, most notably with the two ‘Knives Out’ movies, in which Daniel Craig’s smart sleuth Benoit Blanc uncovers dastardly deeds among spoiled rich folk (in the 2019 original) and weird influencers (in last year’s follow up).

Along with an abiding affection for Agatha Christie and other mystery writers, Johnson has often professed his love for TV series such as ‘Columbo’, where Peter Falk’s scruffy, genius detective first befriends and then unmasks killers.

Adrien Brody as Sterling Frost Jr. in 'Poker Face.'

‘Poker Face’ channels the latter, featuring Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a casino worker with a special gift—she can tell when people are lying. She can’t always figure out exactly why they’re lying, but she knows a falsehood, which has made her an enemy of the gambling boss, represented by casino boss Sterling Frost Jr, played perfectly by Adrien Brody in the premiere.

Despite his casino magnate father wanting Charlie away from the tables, Frost convinces Charlie that they can scam one of the “whales” (a big gambler who is now running private poker games from his suite) at the establishment with a rigged game. It all falls apart when Charlie’s friend Natalie (Dascha Polanco), a member of the housekeeping team, catches the whale with something illegal and goes to her boss, who has his enforcer Cliff Legrand (Benjamin Bratt) to kill the whistleblower and her deadbeat husband.

An impressive pilot sets out the show’s stall, introducing us to Charlie’s world––she lives in a trailer near the casino and tries to stay out of trouble––and then shattering it in the wake of her figuring out what really happened to Natalie. The resulting, potentially lethal blowback sends Charlie on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of Cliff, who is sent to find and silence her.

Benjamin Bratt as Cliff Legrand in 'Poker Face.'

Thus the basic premise of the show, which finds Charlie traveling from place to place and stumbling upon liars, cheats and murderers wherever she goes.

As with ‘Columbo’s basic format, ‘Poker Face’ shows the audience exactly how the murder of the week went down before spinning the clock back a couple of days to reveal how Charlie came to be involved. And then it gets down to the meat of the series, to show Charlie investigating and then solving the murder.

In a neat twist, her own fugitive status means that the stories never get wrapped up in a neat bow with Charlie able to call the police. Doing as much as she can to stay off the radar (even getting money from an ATM is fraught with the risk that Cliff will be able to track her down), she accepts odd jobs, which leads to her being drawn into the mystery.

Because of that trick of showing how the murder plays out, ‘Poker Face’ falls into the category that’s less whodunnit and more “howcatchem”––Charlie rocking up and figuring out what’s really going on. Though the crimes are frequently ridiculous, there are still stakes to be found. And no one is coming to this show for gritty, overinflated “realism” as peddled by so many case-of-the-week shows cluttering up network television. It also looks great––no doubt helped by some of Johnson’s cinematic team crossing over. The mix of classic style and modern sheen works.

Charlie moving on each week like David Banner on TV’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ means that Johnson and co. (he wrote and directed the pilot but worked on the series with showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman) can rely on a rich field of guest stars.

Across the first six episodes provided for review, the stories include one set amongst a punk rock band (anchored by Chloe Sevigny as the bitter lead singer who is trying to tour again after working for years at a home improvement store), another at a care home for the elderly whose resident roster boasts the likes of former revolutionaries with a score to settle played by Judith Light and S. Epatha Merkerson. A highlight is an episode featuring Tim Meadows and Ellen Barkin as actors looking to revisit their glory days whose shared resentment just might turn deadly.

Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale in Peacock's 'Poker Face.'

Lyonne has found a fertile creative ground in TV, between the likes of ‘Orange is the New Black’ and, more recently, the time-twisting ‘Russian Doll’. ‘Poker Face’ represents her latest captivating turn, playing Charlie with charm and intuition. Despite the constant specter of death (and the threat to her own life), she keeps it fun and light, proving to be a more than disarming anchor for the stories.

Though we’ve all gotten used to serialized shows being held up as the gold standard in the age of “prestige TV”, Johnson and his team definitely find something new in a seemingly old format. Procedural it may be, but ‘Poker Face’ is anything but a bluff. It’s more like a winning hand.

‘Poker Face’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What’s New on Digital, DVD/Blu-ray, TV, & Netflix This Week: July 22-28

    Summit

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

    NEW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

    ‘Hellboy’ (July 23)

Neil Marshall’s new take on the beloved comics character stars David Harbour of “Stranger Things” as the rough-around-the-edges half-demon. Chock-full of violence, gore, and F-bombs, the movie traces Hellboy’s origin story and touches on his training by adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane). Now all grown up (and with a mouth to prove it) Hellboy and his giant, smashing arm join the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to defeat the medieval sorceress Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich).

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes deleted scenes and a three-part making-of documentary. Watch an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray below:

    ‘Missing Link’ (July 23)

The newest offering from LAIKA (the animation studio behind “Coraline” and “The Boxtrolls”) is back with this animated delight, which follows a Bigfoot-type creature named Mr. Link (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) who recruits a fearless explorer (Hugh Jackman) to help him find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), they encounter their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes making-of featurettes. Watch an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray below:

    ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ (July 23)

Based on the Japanese manga series, this cyberpunk adventure centers on an amnesiac cyborg girl wakens in a new body with no memory of who she is. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, the compassionate doctor Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious past.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes making-of featurettes.

‘1984’ (July 23): The film adaptation of George Orwell’s classic story of totalitarian oppression gets a new 4K restoration from Criterion, overseen by cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose desaturated style of shooting matched the grim production design. Michael Radford’s take on “1984” presents a chilling dystopian society that is still recognizable today.

‘Do the Right Thing’ (July 23): Spike Lee’s seminal 1989 masterpiece chronicles the racial tensions boiling within a Brooklyn neighborhood on a single day. Long considered one of the most important films in American cinema, it gets a new 4K restoration from Criterion.

NEW VIDEO ON DIGITAL, DEMAND, AND STREAMING

    ‘Tolkien’ (July 23)

The iconic author of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” is the subject of this biopic, which mixes adventure, magic, love, courage, and fellowship. Nicholas Hoult stars as the young writer in his formative years who finds friendship and artistic inspiration in a close-knit group of friends at college. But their “fellowship” is torn apart when they’re all sent to fight in World War I. Available on Digital HD July 23.

    ‘The Boys’ (July 26)

Amazon’s new subversive superhero series is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes — who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods — abuse their powers rather than use them for good. A group of vigilantes known as The Boys work to take down the corrupt heroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

    ‘Veronica Mars’ (July 26)

Hulu revives the beloved series for a fourth season, which brings back Kristen Bell as the snarky, clever titular private investigator. In the eight-episode season, a series of bombs are set off in Neptune during spring break and Veronica is hired by the family of one of the victims. The crime-solving, taser-wielding sleuth is pulled into a mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites against the working class.

    NEW ON NETFLIX

    ‘Another Life’ (July 25)

“Battlestar Galactica” alum Katee Sackoff returns to space in this sci-fi series. She plays Niko Breckenridge, who embarks on an interstellar mission to find the origin of a massive alien artifact after it lands on Earth. Meanwhile, her husband (“Shameless” alum Justin Chatwin) stays home to investigate it.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ (July 26)

The seventh and final season of the dramedy sees many changes coming to the lives of the inmates of the former Litchfield prison. The newly free Piper is navigating the outside world, while her newlywed wife Alex (Laura Prepon) still has four years left on her sentence. Meanwhile, Taystee (Danielle Brooks) returns to Max to face life in prison for a murder she didn’t commit.

‘Pennyworth’ Series Premiere, Epix (July 28, 9 p.m.)

The Batman-adjacent series centers on a younger version of Alfred Pennyworth, who later becomes butler to Bruce Wayne. In 1960s London, Alfred (Jack Bannon) is a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge).

  • ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Final Season Trailer Balances Tragedy and Hope

    Netflix

Ice cream and justice. That’s all what the women of “Orange Is the New Black” want.

The trailer for the seventh and final season of the Netflix dramedy dropped today. It finds the ladies dealing with both tragic and hopeful futures.

The newly free Piper (Taylor Schilling) is navigating the outside world. In the Season 6 finale, she was released thanks to a mistake made by the newly privatized prison system — just moments after she married Alex (Laura Prepon), who still has four years left on her sentence.

Piper’s fate stands in stark contrast to Taystee (Danielle Brooks), who returns to Max to face life in prison for a murder she didn’t commit, all thanks to the false testimony given by BFF Cindy (Adrienne Moore).

Meanwhile, Gloria (Selenis Leyva) and her kitchen staff are confronted by the hard truth of their new corporate overlord’s newest profit stream, while others chase drugs or dreams and grapple with the reality of their place in this world.

“Orange Is the New Black” Season 7 premieres July 26 on Netflix.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ Season 7 Gets Premiere Date, First Photos

    Netflix

For its seventh and final season, “Orange Is the New Black” is exploring something new: freedom.

Netflix unveiled a premiere date for Season 7 and several new images, as well as a cast announcement video. All 13 episodes of the final season will debut July 26.

One of the photos shows a newly free Piper (Taylor Schilling) navigating the outside world. In the Season 6 finale, she was released thanks to a mistake made by the newly privatized prison system, despite still having five months left on her sentence.

Her release came just moments after she married Alex (Laura Prepon), who still has four years left on her sentence.

This season, the ladies of Litchfield will be coming to terms with the fact that prison has changed them forever. Taystee’s (Danielle Brooks) friendship with Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) still hangs in the balance as her life sentence looms, Gloria (Selenis Leyva) and her kitchen staff are confronted by the hard truth of their new corporate overlord’s newest profit stream, while others chase drugs or dreams and grapple with the reality of their place in this world.

Meanwhile, as Piper struggles with life on the outside, life in the maximum security prison she left behind — as corrupt and unjust as ever — goes on.

You’re going to need a new “Orange Is the New Black” in your life.

The sad news came from Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 17. The show’s official social media account posted a video announcing that Season 7 would be its last; in it, the “OITNB” cast talked about what a run it has been. While it’s hard for both the show’s stars and fans, the video did promise a great seventh and final season.

The cast got to weigh in on the show’s end in the video, but several of the actors also added further comments on social media. Here are some of their posts so far:

“Orange Is the New Black” premiered on Netflix in July 2013, and it quickly became a hit. From its first season, it began racking up awards and nominations. The show itself has been a frequent awards show contender and its stars have earned numerous awards, including Uzo Aduba, Taylor Schilling, Kate Mulgrew, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, and Laverne Cox.

Season 7 is the last in a three-season renewal that came in 2016, as Deadline reports. It will premiere in 2019.

  • Ruby Rose Cast as Batwoman for CW Crossover, Standalone Series

Ruby Rose Cast as Batwoman for CW Crossover, Standalone Series

    Netflix

The CW has found its Batwoman: “Orange Is the New Black” star Ruby Rose will take on the iconic DC Comics role.

Deadline reports that Rose will make her debut as the character, out lesbian and trained street fighter Kate Kane, on The CW’s upcoming annual DC Arrowverse crossover event this fall. She is also set to star in the pilot for the standalone “Batwoman” series that’s currently in development at the network.

While that project is still in its early stages, with work on the script still ongoing, Deadline reports that Rose’s attachment gives it a considerable boost, and all but an assurance to make it to series. The plan is reportedly for Rose to not only appear in the Arrowverse crossover, but also get her own full-length “Batwoman” pilot, rather than the crossover simply serving as a backdoor pilot (the trajectory is similar to what happened when the network introduced “The Flash”).

According to Deadline, Rose — who can next be seen on the big screen in “The Meg” — was inclined to return to television following her successful stint on Netflix’s “OITNB” thanks to “the opportunity to break new ground.” The trade continues:

“If the project goes to series, Batwoman will become the first gay lead character — male or female — of a live-action superhero series. Batwoman already has been a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ representation in comics. After a long hiatus, she was reintroduced to the DC comic universe in 2006 when she was established as a Jewish lesbian, becoming the first-ever lesbian superhero title DC character.”

Sounds like exactly the right fit for the groundbreaking Rose. We’re eager to see her take on the character, and hopefully see her shine in her own series soon.

Expect the Arrowverse crossover to air sometime this fall on The CW.
