Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison in Disney+'s 'The Beatles: Get Back'
(L to R) Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison in Disney+’s ‘The Beatles: Get Back’

    Beatlemania is back!

Premiering February 11th only in IMAX theaters is ‘The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert.’ The movie contains new and old footage from ’The Lord of the Rings’ director Peter Jackson’s three-part Disney+ series, ‘The Beatles: Get Back.’

The Disney+ documentary series covers the making of the Beatles‘ 1970 album ‘Let It Be,’ and uses new footage originally filmed for Michael Lindsay-Hogg‘s 1970 documentary of the same name. ‘The Rooftop Concert’ centers on footage from the end of the documentary, which highlights Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr in their final concert together as a band.

But the Beatles are no strangers to appearing in movies, having starred in several feature films, an animated movie, and countless documentaries. There have also been several fictional films made about members of the band, as well as movies that celebrate the music and legacy of the group.

In honor of the new IMAX concert movie, Moviefone counts down the top ten Beatles movies of all-time! For this list, we are including not only movies starring the Beatles, but also films about the band and their musical influence around the world.

    Let’s begin!

    10) ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ (1967)

Released in 1967, the film was written, directed, and starred the Beatles at the height of their psychedelic phase. The movie follows a group of people on a bus tour who begin to experience strange and magical encounters, and was inspired by Ken Kesey’s own bus, Further, and his work with the Merry Pranksters.

The movie marks the third outing for the band starring in their own narrative film, and while it is probably the least appealing of any of the movies that the Beatles have appeared in, it does feature a performance of “I Am the Walrus’ with the band wearing animal masks.

    9) ‘The Beatles: Eight Days A Week’ (2016)

This documentary directed by Oscar-winner Ron Howard focuses on the Beatles’ touring years between 1962 and 1966, from their first gig in Liverpool to their final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966.

The highlight of the documentary is 30 minutes of unseen footage from the band’s 1965 Shea Stadium concert, which had its sound remastered by Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin.

    8) ‘Nowhere Boy’ (2009)

Filmmaker Sam Taylor-Wood made her directorial debut with this 2009 film about John Lennon’s teenage years, based on a biography written by Lennon’s half-sister Julia Baird.

The film stars Aaron Johnson as a young Lennon and follows his complicated relationship with his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his mother (Anne-Marie Duff), as well as the creation of his first band, The Quarrymen, which eventually became the Beatles. Johnson gives a quiet and beautiful performance as Lennon, which gained a lot of attention from Hollywood and basically launched his career.

    7) ‘Let It Be’ (1970)

This 1970 documentary about the making of the band’s final album ‘Let it Be’ marked the last original film the Beatles would release before breaking up. The movie documents the interpersonal relationships between band members and illuminates some of the turmoil that would eventually lead to their dismantling.

The highlight of the documentary is an impromptu rooftop performance, which sadly would become the last time the Fab Four ever played in public. Unused footage from the making of this documentary is what Peter Jackson utilized for ‘The Beatles: Get Back.’

    6) ‘Yesterday’ (2019)

    Yesterday movie
    Working Title Films

Directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle (‘Slumdog Millionaire’) and written by Richard Curtis (‘Love Actually’), ‘Yesterday’ is a clever romantic comedy and a love letter to the music of the Beatles.

The story follows a struggling musician (Himesh Patel) who through a series of events now finds himself the only person on the planet who has ever heard of the Beatles and plagiarizes their music for his own gain. In addition to Patel, the film also stars Lily James, Kate McKinnon, and in a hilarious cameo, Ed Sheeran.

    5) ‘Across the Universe’ (2007)

    Across the Universe movie
    Revolution Studios

Directed by Julie Taymor (‘Frida’) and based on an original story by Taymor and screenwriters Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, the film utilizes over thirty songs composed by members of the Beatles.

The movie also uses characters from Beatles songs like Lucy (‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’), Jude (‘Hey Jude’), Max (“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’), Sadie (‘Sexy Sadie’), Jo-Jo (‘Get Back’), and Prudence (‘Dear Prudence’). The film features an excellent cast that includes Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Logan Marshall-Green, Dylan Baker, Bill Irwin, Eddie Izzard, Salma Hayek, Joe Cocker, and Bono.

    4) ‘Backbeat’ (1994)

This 1994 movie directed by Iain Softly, centers on the Beatles original bass guitarist Stu Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff) and his relationship with Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee), which led to him leaving the band before they had worldwide success. In addition to Dorff and Lee, the film also features Ian Hart as John Lennon, Gary Bakewell as Paul McCartney, Chris O’Neil as George Harrison, and Scot Williams as Pete Best, the band’s original drummer.

But the best part of this movie might be the soundtrack, which featured an all-star band performing songs that the Beatles played in their early days. The musicians include David Pirner from Soul Asylum, Greg Dulli from The Afghan Whigs, Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, Mike Mills from R.E.M., Henry Rollins from Black Flag, and Dave Grohl from Nirvana.

    3) ‘Help!’ (1965)

The Beatles second film, ‘Help!’ follows the group as they struggle to record a new album and try to protect Ringo Starr from an evil cult out to steal one of his rings. Directed by Richard Lester (‘Superman II’), the film’s plot is boarder-line ridiculous but does mark the last time the band’s pre-psychedelic years were captured on film.

The highlight of the movie is that the Beatles were just being themselves and having fun, which is a stark contrast to their disillusioned behavior by the time they made ‘Let it Be.’

    20452

    2) ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ (1964)

The first of their many movies, ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ follows the band at the height of Beatlemania. What I like about this movie is that it is just a “slice of Beatles life,” and brings the audience behind the scenes to see what it would have been like to be a Beatle.

They mostly just avoid fans, make TV appearances, and try to manage Paul’s “crazy” grandfather, played by Wilfred Brambell. Directed by Richard Lester, the movie was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay and ranked 88th on the British Film Institute’s greatest British movies of the 20th century list.

    2704

    1) ‘Yellow Submarine’ (1968)

Not only is ‘Yellow Submarine’ the best of Beatles movie of all-time, it’s one of the best animated movies of all-time. Directed by Charles Dunning, the film marks the fourth movie released by the Beatles. While the band technically doesn’t appear in the film or even voice their own characters, they do perform the music, which includes ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,’ ‘Nowhere Man,’ ‘All You Need Is Love,’ and of course, ‘Yellow Submarine.’

The “totally trippy” movie begins in Pepperland, the home of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, where the music-hating Blue Meanies have just attacked. Young Fred (Lance Percival) is tasked with fleeing Pepperland in a Yellow Submarine to find help to battle the Blue Meanies, eventually returning with Paul (Geoffrey Hughes), John (John Clive), George (Peter Batten), and Ringo (Paul Angelis), to save the day. The animated film also acts as a great gateway for parents who want to introduce their kids to the music of the Beatles.

  • Miley Cyrus Performed as ‘Black Mirror’ Character Ashley O at Glastonbury Festival

Miley Cyrus Performed as ‘Black Mirror’ Character Ashley O at Glastonbury Festival

    Netflix

Ashley O just keeps coming back.

Miley Cyrus surprised fans at the Glastonbury Festival in  England over the weekend by taking the stage as her “Black Mirror” character. The singer-actress played the pop star in the Series 5 episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” and then released a music video she’d filmed for the show. This time, Ashley O made her triumphant return live as Cyrus performed “On a Roll” in the character’s recognizable lavender wig.

BBC Radio 1 shared a clip via Twitter after the fact and highlighted what a fun surprise it was:

Surprise or not, the stunt was fitting. Cyrus’s big break was on the Disney Channel TV series “Hannah Montana,” and she regularly performed as her TV character. By now, she must be used to alter egos and wigs.

The singer had even more in store for Glastonbury attendees. She also brought out her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lil Nas X to perform “Old Town Road,” as EW reports. What a day for everyone — including Ashley O.

‘Charlie’s Angels’: Miley Cyrus Teases Soundtrack Collab With Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey

    Miley Cyrus on The Voice
    NBC

The anticipation for the first trailer for the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot just got that much higher.

Miley Cyrus teased in a tweet Wednesday that she teamed up with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey for the movie’s soundtrack. The former “Voice” judge reposted a 14-second video that Sony had unveiled Wednesday to preview the trailer’s release on Thursday, and she wrote, “WE ARE COMING!,” and tagged Grande and Del Rey.

The video indicates that the trailer is “uploading” and shows the franchise’s logo. It notably also includes a snippet of what is presumably the trio’s collaboration. You can’t hear any of their voices on the track, but it sounds promising nonetheless.

Grande got in on the fun with a tweet, too, but she didn’t share as much as Cyrus did. The pop star simply uploaded the video and wrote, “trailer tomorrow,” tagging the “Charlie’s Angels” Twitter account and adding an angel emoji. Del Rey, on the other hand, hasn’t posted the video at the time of this writing.

There’s a lot to look forward to with “Charlie’s Angels.” It’s directed by Elizabeth Banks (“Pitch Perfect”) and stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Banks, Djimon Hounsou, and Noah Centineo, among others. The reboot is due out Nov. 15.

‘Black Mirror’: Watch Miley Cyrus’s Ashley O ‘On a Roll’ Music Video

Miley Cyrus Black Mirror music video still
    Netflix/YouTube

“Black Mirror” pop star Ashley O is back.

Netflix had a surprise in store for fans after Miley Cyrus guest starred in the Series 5: a full music video starring her pop star character, Ashley O. The episode, “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” features Cyrus as a singer who is unhappy with her image and secretly writes darker music. Her music video is for the song “On a Roll,” a catchy, upbeat pop tune in line with Ashley O’s public persona.

“On a Roll” was briefly a part of Cyrus’s episode, and the video can be now seen in its full glory. Cyrus performs entirely in character, as you’ll see below.

Word of Cyrus’s guest role in “Black Mirror” Season 5 came at the end of last year, prompting the singer-slash-actress to confirm it (but also not) in December. As we know now, she definitely appeared on the show, even traveling to South Africa for the gig.

“Black Mirror” Series 5 premiered earlier in June, so it’s finally all out there, music video included.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Has Shaped Taylor Swift’s ‘Entire Outlook on Storytelling’

It’s already clear that “Game of Thrones” is a cultural phenomenon, but now there’s even more proof. It turns out that the show has had a huge impact on Taylor Swift‘s music.

The pop star opened up about her appreciation for “Game of Thrones” during a recent interview with EW, and she admitted that a lot of the tracks on her last album, “reputation,” were “influenced by the show” because she started binge-watching it in 2016. Although many songs were inspired by events from her life, she said she saw them “through a ‘Game of Thrones’ filter.”

While Swift gave examples of specific plot lines that influenced specific songs (“‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is literally Arya Stark’s kill list,” as she told EW), she also shared what she learned about writing.

“My entire outlook on storytelling has been shaped by [‘Game of Thrones’] — the ability to foreshadow stories, to meticulously craft cryptic story lines,” she said.

And so there you have it: more proof of the show’s wide-reaching impact. From pop songs to Emmy campaigns to presidential tweets, “Game of Thrones” is everywhere. The hit series may be ending with Season 8, but it will clearly live on in the cultural lexicon — as well as in Swift’s music.

    Christina Aguilera on The Voice
    NBC

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” is ringing in 2019 with another one of its star-studded lineups.

The annual event features the ball dropping at midnight in New York City’s Times, and as usual, viewers will see several big-name acts before the countdown. The East Coast lineup has just been announced, and Christina Aguilera is headlining, the Associated Press reports. The singer and former “Voice” judge previously performed on the show in 2007.

Aguilera takes the baton from last year’s performer, Mariah Carey. Other performers taking the stage in New York this year include Bastille, Dan + Shay, and New Kids on the Block. Ryan Seacrest is once again hosting, joined by Jenny McCarthy, who is tasked with reporting from Times Square.

Meanwhile, there will be celebrations going on in New Orleans and Hollywood, too. In the Big Easy, Florida Georgia Line and Maren Morris will perform, with Lucy Hale serving as emcee. In Hollywood, Ciara will host, and the acts scheduled include Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Bazzi, Kane Brown with Lauren Alaina, Halsey, Weezer, Kelsea Ballerini, The Chainsmokers, Foster the People, Ella Mai, Dua Lipa, Macklemore, Skylar Grey, and Charlie Puth.

The show will air on Dec. 31, starting at 8 p.m. ET, on ABC. What a way to end 2018.

  • Ariana Grande’s Funny ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video Teaser Features ‘Mean Girls’ Actors

Ariana Grande’s Funny ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video Teaser Features ‘Mean Girls’ Actors

    Thank U Next promo
    Ariana Grande/Twitter

Ariana Grande has some “Mean Girls” actors to say “Thank U” to.

The pop star has been teasing her music video for “Thank U, Next,” and she enlisted the help of multiple “Mean Girls” cast members to do so. In a video inspired by the hit comedy, they gush about Grande, much like the students of North Shore High did for Regina George (Rachel McAdams).

One of the people who weighs in is Jonathan Bennett, who played Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels. He offered a nod to a scene in the movie in which Regina flaunted Aaron in front of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), saying, “Ariana Grande told me my hair looked sexy pushed back. She’s not wrong.”

Next up is Stefanie Drummond, whose character, Bethany Byrd, was the one Regina once punched in the face. This time, she’s got a new story to tell (while wearing a pink polo, natch): “Ariana broke off an engagement, so I found a guy to propose to me, and I broke off an engagement.”

The “Thank U, Next” clips we’ve seen so far have been inspired by multiple movies, including “Bring It On” and “13 Going on 30.” In addition to the “Mean Girls” actors, there have been cameos from actress Jennifer Coolidge, pop singer Troye Sivan, comedian Colleen Ballinger, and YouTuber Gabi DeMartino, as Entertainment Weekly reports.

  • Drake’s ‘I’m Upset’ Music Video and Its ‘Degrassi’ Reunion Made Fans Ridiculously Happy

Drake‘s music video for his song “I’m Upset” is anything but upsetting for “Degrassi” fans. In fact, tons of them are gushing on Twitter because it reunited the cast.

The music video portrays a Degrassi Class of 2007 reunion, and as such, it features numerous stars of the Canadian teen drama series from the early 2000s. Drake, who starred on the show himself as Jimmy, is joined by Nina Dobrev (Mia), Shane Kippel (Spinner), Stacey Farber (Ellie), Adamo Rugguiero (Marco), Lauren Collins (Paige), Jake Epstein (Craig), Christina Schmidt (Terri), Andrea Lewis (Hazel), Melissa McIntyre (Ashley), Linlyn Lue (Ms. Kwan), Stefan Brogan (Archie), Ephraim Ellis (Rick), Jake Goldsbie (Toby), Marc Donato (Derek), Dalmar Abuzeid (Danny), AJ Saudin (Connor), Miriam McDonald (Emma), Cassie Steele (Manny), Sarah Barrable-Tishauer (Liberty), Paula Brancati (Jane). The video even includes actors Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, who played fictionalized versions of themselves on the show.

The music video’s reunion really brought “Degrassi” fans back, as their tweets show. Basically, it was nostalgia overload — especially once the theme song played at the end.

After the big reunion, a lot of people are now ready to marathon old “Degrassi” episodes.

If you haven’t seen the music video yet, see below. Warning: It’s NSFW.

If only Drake would spearhead a push for a “Degrassi” revival series or movie next. Based on the tweets we’ve seen, fans would be all for it.

  • Latest ‘Mean Tweets’ Music Edition Again Hits the Right Note

There’s a reason “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” keeps bringing back “Mean Tweets”: The segment just hasn’t gotten old.

On Tuesday, musicians and bands were back in the hot seat for the fourth music edition. Artists such as Pink, Common, Alice Cooper, and many more had to read nasty social media posts about themselves, giving us some truly entertaining moments.

“Pink makes music for obnoxious bridal parties that drunkenly walk into a Denny’s and ruin everyone’s evening,” the Grammy winner read, laughing.

She didn’t deny it — she simply corrected it, saying, “I would have said Waffle House, but whatever.”

Meanwhile, Erykah Badu seemed similarly amused when she read hers — “erykah badu [sic] tits look like d**ks” — but she did defend herself: “I had three babies,” she said.

Common, on the other hand, seemed a little more annoyed. In response to the tweet “Common is the Pottery Barn of rappers,” he asked, “What the f*ck do you know about rap?”

    Watch the full video below.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

  • Drake Spent $50,000 on Groceries for Strangers in a Supermarket: Report

Shoppers in a Florida grocery store not only got to meet Drake on Tuesday, they got to get free groceries, on him.

The actor-turned-musician has been surprising strangers with random acts of kindness recently. These good deeds have been huge — so far total $125,000 according to E! News. The tab for shoppers’ groceries alone was reportedly about $50,000.

Needless to say, shoppers in Sabor Tropical Supermarket were thrilled when Drake walked in at roughly 4 p.m. on Tuesday. His crew had been setting up cameras, but no one knew what was going to happen, according to Guille Deza, one of the shoppers. He said that Drake was rumored to be filming for his upcoming music video for “God’s Plan.”

Deza posted photos with Drake on his Instagram later praising his kindness and saying that the musician was encouraging them all to buy more. “So much love and bless this man 100 times over for all his generosity,” he wrote.

Another shopper, Rocio, also got a picture and sent her thanks via Instagram.

I met drake today at the supermarket , thanks drake for the groceries #drake

A post shared by Rocio (@chiofdc) on

In addition to his grocery giveaway, Drake also reportedly donated $25,000 to Miami Senior High School on Monday. He then handed over a check for $50,000 to Destiny James, a student at the University of Miami, for her tuition on Tuesday. She was extremely grateful and touched, which she shared on Instagram alongside a photo of her receiving the gift.

“Thank you for blessing me when I thought my hard work was going unnoticed,” she wrote, in part. “I’m living out my dreams.”

This happened today. I applied to scholarships last year for which I had to write an essay. I received those scholarships and thought that was the end of it. Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments. I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I’ve been through, and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate. This was the surprise the whole time. Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I’ve worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition. @champagnepapi THANK YOU SO MUCH!!’ You don’t understand what this means to me! I would’ve never imagined this happening to me. I’m just a girl from Denmark, SC that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for you to see my hard work means the world. Thank you so much. God I thank you. You are so great and amazing! Thank you for blessing me when I thought my hard work was going unnoticed. I’m living out my dreams. God’s Plan ????????

A post shared by Destiny Paris James (@_destinyparis) on

Drake’s beneficiaries weren’t the only ones happy. He shared a post of his own on Wednesday, telling fans how much it meant to him to help everyone.

“Last 3 days were the best I have had in a very long time…there’s nothing like seeing people experience a joyful moment when you can tell they need it the most,” he wrote.

    That’s some food for thought.
