  • Tom Cruise Shows Off ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunt Work

    pyvi1EQZ

Long gone are the days when we had to wait for home entertainment to see “Making Of” videos explaining how filmmakers pulled off amazing stunts or effects sequences.

These days, they’re out before the film itself arrives.

And if you’re Tom Cruise, you don’t have the patience to hold off until the year the movie lands, let alone the month or week. Hence a new look online at the extensive preparation behind one of the keynote stunts of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’, which will see his character, daredevil agent Ethan Hunt, sailing over a cliff on a motorbike and launching himself into the sky for a BASE jump.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ will be in theaters on July 14th, 2023.
‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ will be in theaters on July 14th, 2023.

He might not have the patience to wait and show off the team behind the stunt, but Cruise certainly has it to make sure the sequence goes flawlessly––and with good reason, because no one wants to see him pancaked on the ground.

Least of all writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, who can be seen in the video visibly aging as Cruise pulls off his latest wild activity.

Which means we’re treated to an extensive exploration of what goes into a sequence such as this––in this case, much stunt bike training, test jumps and even microchip-linked drones which accurately record his distance, velocity, and angles so all involved can make sure it’s worked out properly.

And the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies could certainly use the good publicity after a couple of years that have seen them hit with pandemic filming delays and all sorts of issues as the mammoth shoot continued (and continues).

We still don’t know exactly what the story will be this time (besides the obvious opportunities for Ethan Hunt to run/drive/jump off/into/out of things), besides hints that his past will be coming back to haunt him––particularly since old enemy Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) is back from the original ‘M:I’ movie way back in 1996.

We can expect to see Simon Pegg (back as Benji) and Ving Rhames (Luther), plus more recent recruits including Rebecca Ferguson’s Isla Faust and Vanessa Kirby’s White Widow.

Completely new this time are Hayley Atwell’s Grace, plus Pom Klementieff, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, and Esai Morales, who was drafted in to replace Nicholas Hoult as one of the movie’s villains, after the latter had a schedule clash due to the movie’s many delays.

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

In related Cruise news, he also took time out from flying around to thank fans who showed up in droves and helped make ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ one of the biggest hits of the year.

But far from simply standing in front of a poster of the film (or in front of some pretty location where he’s still currently filming the two new ‘Mission’ movies), he chose to do it in his inimitable style––jumping out of a plane. Seems fitting, we suppose…

  • Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Pooh-Poohs ‘Christopher Robin’ Opening

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Pooh-Poohs ‘Christopher Robin’ Opening

Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Christopher Robin
    Paramount/Disney

No one channels the “Hang in There” cat like Tom Cruise.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout kept a tight grip on the top of the box office for the second weekend in a row.

“M:I-6” picked up $35 million, which set a Week 2 record for the franchise. This movie already set a Week 1 record when it opened last week. So far, “Mission: Impossible 6” has earned $329,487,371 worldwide.

All in all, fans seem to agree with the critics that the movie is worth a trip to the theaters — if for no other reason than to analyze Henry Cavill’s arm reloading shot for continuity errors.

Christopher Robin did OK, though, following with just over $25 million, which is around what was expected. The Disney film had mixed reviews from critics but high marks from viewers, with an “A” Cinemascore.

The star-studded comedyThe Spy Who Dumped Me opened in third place on the box office chart for the first weekend of August, with $12.35 million.

That may not seem that great, but The Darkest Minds can top it for a sad opening, only picking up $5.8 million from 3,127 screens. That’s actually 16 more screens than “The Spy Who Dumped Me.” (It’s several hundred fewer screens than “Christopher Robin,” and more than a thousand fewer screens than “Mission: Impossible 6.”)

“The Darkest Minds” had to settle for No. 8 on the weekend box office chart, well behind Mamma Mia! 2 at fourth, which beat The Equalizer 2 by not quite one million once again. That makes one weekend for Team Denzel, and two weekends for Team Cher.

Hotel Transylvania 3 took sixth, with Ant-Man and the Wasp at No. 7. The rest of the top 10 went to Incredibles 2 — which reached $1 billion worldwide last week — in ninth place, and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies” at No. 10.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was No. 11, just missing the top 10 for the first time since it opened.Skyscraper is now down at No. 14. Those are all domestic box office totals, though, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would be the first to point out that his movie has made almost $200 million at the foreign box office alone.

Worth noting: Black Panther just hit another box office milestone. More on that here. Congrats, T’Challa!

    What’s next?

Some major summer movies are coming pretty soon, including Jason Statham‘s The Meg on August 10, Crazy Rich Asians on August 15.

  • Henry Cavill Had a Hilarious Reaction to ‘Mission: Impossible’ Scene’s Instant Beard Growth

The real mission fans have chosen to accept is to obsess over Henry Cavill‘s arm reloading scene in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

The arm cock move has become a meme, but it’s also being analyzed for possible continuity errors. Is it just a trick of the light or does he 1) grow a beard and 2) grow a shirt pocket within seconds?

Reporter Jake Hamilton shared a clip of his talk with “M:I-6” stars Henry Cavill and Simon Pegg, asking them both about Henry’s beard growth mystery:

Reporter: “There is a GIF floating around of you, and it’s the arm cock. But not just that. It looks like in that moment you grow a beard. Have you heard about that?”

Henry Cavill: “Yeah, yeah. Yes. I’ve seen it as well.”

Reporter: “Is there a story behind that? Or is it just the lighting, you happen to hit the light the right way?”

Henry Cavill: “It’s because I punch so hard when reloading my fists that I actually grew a beard in that moment. I made facial hair history.”

Simon Pegg: “There’s so, so much testosterone at work there. That’s how he gets up every morning, clean shaven. He goes [does arm cock movement]. And then he’s got a beard.”

Nice. Henry Cavill also made “facial hair history” with MustacheGate, the CGI-erased mustache for his Superman in “Justice League.” That was also due to the magic power of his “Mission: Impossible” beard. Bow to its impact.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” had the best box office debut of the franchise to date, and we’re expecting it to continue to do well this weekend. Check out all of Moviefone’s interviews with the cast and director Christopher McQuarrie.

  • Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Cruises to Record Opening, ‘Incredibles 2’ Nears $1 Billion

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Cruises to Record Opening, ‘Incredibles 2’ Nears $1 Billion

    Paramount

This sixth mission was sooooooo very possible for Tom Cruise.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout” just had the best opening weekend of the franchise to date. It also easily beat all competition to take the No. 1 spot on the box office chart for the final weekend of July.

The $61.5 million for M:I-6 topped the previous opening high of $57.8 million for “Mission: Impossible II” in 2000, and the $55.5M for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” in 2015.

So far, in addition to the $61.5M domestic, “Fallout” has already earned $92M overseas for a current total of $153,500,000.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” aka M:I-4, has the current overall franchise record with $694.7 million worldwide, followed by “Rogue Nation” with $682.7 million, and “Mission: Impossible II” with $546.4 million. So we’ll have to wait and see where “Fallout” falls in the final tally.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” just barely lost the top spot last week to “The Equalizer 2,” and this week it’s No. 2 again, but it managed to barely top Denzel Washington‘s sequel. (Last week Denzel won by $1 million, this week Cher wins by $1 million. This is the fun summer game we never saw coming.)

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” took the fourth spot on the chart with $12.3 million. The other big new movie this week, beyond “Fallout,” was “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies,” which had to settle for fifth place with $10.5 million.

Sixth place went to Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” “Skyscraper” — which has only been out for three weeks — is now barely hanging on in the top 10; its $5.4 million put it at No. 9, ranking below “Incredibles 2,” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

    Pixar

“Incredibles 2” is now just $4 million away from reaching $1 billion worldwide. Considering it picked up over $7 million over the weekend, from the healthy domestic box office alone, we can expect the supers to pick up an official Billion Club invitation any day now. It already has the title of highest-grossing animated film at the domestic box office. Ever.

The “Jurassic World” sequel got to $1 billion a while ago, with more help from the foreign box office. The “Ant-Man” sequel is close to $400 million worldwide, but it’s not a contender for The Billion Club. “Skyscraper” is currently at $225,758,089 worldwide, with most of that coming from the foreign box office. Those international coins make all the difference sometimes!

    What’s next?

Christopher Robin” is coming August 3 to drain your tear ducts, and “The Spy Who Dumped Me” will be sneaking in as well. But keep an eye on M:I-6 to see how high it flies around the world.

  • Tom Cruise Explains How He Broke His Ankle in Painful ‘Fallout’ Stunt Clips

OUCH. Maybe Tom Cruise‘s need for speed needs to chill.

Tom Cruise just joined Instagram to reveal the title of “Mission: Impossible 6” as “Fallout.” He also shared some new photos from the movie, including a couple of his trademark dramatic stunt shots.

Speaking of stunts, you probably heard that filming had to be shut down for a while as Cruise recovered from a botched stunt. At age 55, he still does his own stunts, and one required him to jump a building onto another building.

Cruise explained on “The Graham Norton Show” that he was always supposed to miss and hit the building. That was part of the stunt scene. What was not supposed to happen was how his ankle hit the outside of the building.

Graham Norton showed several angles of the stunt gone wrong, including an excruciating one where you can see his foot twist in the wrong direction. Because Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, even after he knew he broke his ankle, he still tried to get up and immediately start running to finish the scene.

Watch Cruise explain his stunt, see the clips, and see costar Simon Pegg go out of his way to avoid seeing the clips:Cruise joked that he blamed Henry Cavill for the whole thing, since the scene had his character, Ethan Hunt, trying to chase down Cavill’s character, Reville Smites. Let’s just blame Cavill’s mustache, since it is already the official scapegoat of so many things.

Check out some other videos from the “Fallout” cast’s fun time with Graham Norton:“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” opens July 27th, 2018.

  • Tom Cruise Finally Reveals ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Title on Instagram

Tom Cruise does his own stunts on Instagram now too!

“Mission: Impossible 6” director Christopher McQuarrie has been teasing photos for this movie via Instagram, but star Tom Cruise just joined for the first time today to reveal the official title.

Along with the official “M:I6” title, Cruise also posted a new Ethan Hunt stunt photo:

    Get ready. #MissionImpossible

A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise) on

There you have it. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

    What does it mean?

“The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative,” McQuarrie told Empire. “There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat.” Figuratively, he added, “There’s the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions.”

In the movie, Cruise will be joined by several past “Mission: Impossible” costars, including Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, and Sean Harris. They will be joined by newbies Henry Cavill and His Un-shave-able Mustache, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Basset.

McQuarrie already teased that he was just putting the finishing touches on the first trailer, so that should be coming at any time.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” opens July 27th, 2018. And if there isn’t at least one super-intense Tom Cruise running scene, complain to him on Instagram.

  • ‘Justice League’: Superman’s CGI-Erased Mustache Looks Weird & Fans Can’t Unsee It

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Justice League' - Red CarpetMustacheGate is Superman’s new Kryptonite.

Henry Cavill is in “Justice League” as Clark Kent/Superman, who has no mustache. That was not a problem until the scheduling of “Justice League” reshoots overlapped with his filming for “Mission: Impossible 6.” In that film, he does have a pretty sweet ‘stache, and chin scruff. Much ado was made over “Justice League” having to digitally remove Cavill’s mustache for the movie. The actor himself had a lot of fun with the idea on social media, in response to the chatter.

But now “Justice League” is out, and many fans (including some who were probably looking for issues, knowing Cavill’s mustache was a factor) were thrown by the result:

Yeah, maybe this will actually boost the box office?

If you’re curious how one erases facial hair on screen, Business Insider got the inside scoop from some visual effects experts.

“Mission: Impossible 6” — starring Henry Cavill’s un-shaveable mustache — is scheduled to open in theaters on July 27th, 2018. “Justice League” is now in theaters.

  • Tom Cruise Back on ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ After Breaking His Ankle

Tom Cruise on the Set of Mission : Impossible 6 Gemini - in ParisSeven weeks after breaking his ankle during a stunt gone wrong, Tom Cruise was spotted back on set filming “Mission: Impossible 6.

That’s ahead of schedule, as THR initially reported that he was going to take off eight or nine weeks to heal.

The Daily Mail reports that the actor “did not go easy” on his first day and was seen flying a helicopter and driving a large truck around the set.

The film costars Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, Sean Harris, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett.

Despite the hiatus, the release date hasn’t moved: It’s still set for July 27, 2018.

  • Tom Cruise Injury Shuts Down ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Filming for 8 Weeks

Production on “Mission: Impossible 6” could be shut down for at least eight weeks after star Tom Cruise suffered an injury while performing a stunt.

Cruise is famous for doing many of his own stunts. Video from the set shows the actor attempting to jump from one building to another, but falling short and smacking into the side of the second building. The extent of his injuries are unknown, but a source told Variety that the actor may have broken his ankle and hurt his hip.

A doctor is reportedly to examine Cruise this week, after which Paramount will decide how long to delay production.

Filming could still wrap on time, if Cruise’s scenes are pushed to the tail end of the shoot. But if production does run over schedule, it’ll cause major problems for the other cast members, including Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Hall, who have other projects waiting for them in the fall.

“Mission: Impossible 6” is due in theaters July 27, 2018.

  • Tom Cruise Apparently Injured in ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Stunt

ENTERTAINMENT-US-CINEMA-THE MUMMYNo mission is really impossible for Tom Cruise, but his action star body is 55-years-old now, and maybe he should go easy on it.

Cruise is currently filming “Mission: Impossible 6” in London, and — as usual — he’s doing his own stunts. However, onlookers got footage of what looks like a stunt-gone-wrong, with Cruise missing a jump landing and instead banging into a building. He’s then seen limping before he returns, presumably to either ice the wound or just do it again.

    Watch the stunt:

Ouch. It doesn’t look like that was the way they planned it … although it would be realistic for the story if every now and then Ethan Hunt did miss a landing. Maybe that’s the twist here?

There have been no updates at this point from Cruise or director Christopher McQuarrie, but stunt injuries can’t be new for Cruise. He’s probably fine — he didn’t look like he needed serious medical attention — but since he was limping, that might necessitate some slight changes to the stunt plans.

The Hollywood Reporter just had a story on 50-year-old superheroes and the “new challenges” they present for fitness gurus. Tom Cruise isn’t the only superstar over 50 still out there in fighting mode. There’s Robert Downey Jr. (52) as Iron Man, Vin Diesel (50), Keanu Reeves (52), and more.

Recovery time is slower for someone 45 vs. 25, the story notes, but Cruise’s fitness should help him.

“While muscle mass does tend to decrease with age, a condition known as sarcopenia, the rate is quite small, less than 1 percent per year,” David Kingsbury, who has trained Hugh Jackman for the past five years, told THR in their report. “Age is often given as an excuse, but a fit 65-year-old can easily outperform a lazy 25-year-old.”

“Mission: Impossible 6” is scheduled to open in theaters July 27th, 2018.
