Arriving on Netflix on November 26 is the first four episodes from ‘Stranger Things’ fifth season, starting the long(ish) road to wrapping up the series as a whole.

The cast for the show includes Winona Ryder (‘Reality Bites’), David Harbour (‘Black Widow’), Millie Bobby Brown (‘Enola Holmes’), Finn Wolfhard (‘It’), Gaten Matarazzo (‘Honor Society’) and Noah Schnapp (‘Bridge of Spies’).

Finishing off a series that has had as much worldwide attention of ‘Stranger Things’ is a task that could best be described as “mammoth.” There is so much expectations and a multitude of dangling plot lines to be tied up.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have opted to go big, and Netflix in its infinite wisdom (and hunt for viewing figures) has decided to split this final season somewhat confusingly into various-sized chunks. Fortunately, the first four, at least don’t disappoint.

    Script and Direction

The Duffers and their writers team appear fully cognizant of the challenges inherent in sticking the landing –– and what has emerged, at least in this initial run of four is a mostly balanced treatment of the surviving main characters.

A majority of the cast get something fun (or terrifying; or both) to do, and the team-up concept means that there are more interactions. The creators have also built on the premise, raising the stakes as the final conflict begins.

Despite hour-plus running times for most episodes, there’s not much downtime, and the show’s hefty budget means it all looks good.

Though the younger cast have all aged to such a degree that they’re not the most convincing high-schoolers to grace screens, they still give committed, entertaining performances.

Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin remains a standout, but all the “young” characters enjoy decent storylines or at least moments, while Winona Ryder is on good form as Joyce.

It might have very familiar genre bones (evil presence in a small town, psychic connections or powers, monsters) but ‘Stranger Things’ has always built well on those foundations, with this initial batch of final season episodes delivering on heart and spectacle.

Now we just have to wait until Christmas Day for the next three.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Volume 1 receives 75 out of 100.

Arriving on Netflix on December 25 is the second three episodes from ‘Stranger Things’ fifth season, leading to the big finish on New Year’s Eve.

The cast for the show includes Winona Ryder (‘Reality Bites’), David Harbour (‘Black Widow’), Millie Bobby Brown (‘Enola Holmes’), Finn Wolfhard (‘It’), Gaten Matarazzo (‘Honor Society’) and Noah Schnapp (‘Bridge of Spies’).

‘Stranger Things’ has always referenced 1980s pop culture, so it seems appropriate that this middle chunk of Season 5 should be the ‘Empire Strikes Back’ of the final run. The heroes are on the back foot to some degree, but are looking for ways to win. It never reaches the sheer quality of that second ‘Star Wars,’ but there is some solid entertainment here.

The scripts are a mixed bag here and there –– we get plenty of big reveals (particularly about the nature of the Upside Down) and a lovely moment for Will, but the episodes also suffer from long batches of exposition designed to set the finale up (though one scene featuring the reuniting gang manages to pull off an info dump while also being fun).

Frank Darabont and Shawn Levy are on directing duty here (the Duffers share a credit with Levy on Episode 7) and the three episodes are generally stylish, full of interesting visuals.

While we talked about the main characters in the review of the first chunk, credit to Noah Schnapp, who brings real pathos and nervy energy to Will’s big revelation to his friends.

But we would be remiss if we didn’t also highlight Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, who is a real star in his supporting role.

We’re in the endgame now for ‘Stranger Things’ and while the final season has been a mixed bag, it’s certainly got plenty to offer fans who have been on the ride for nearly a decade.

Can it stick the landing? We’ll have to wait and see once the finale arrives.

Arriving on Netflix on December 31 is final bumper-sized episode from ‘Stranger Things’ fifth season, which is also the series finale.

The cast for the show includes Winona Ryder (‘Reality Bites’), David Harbour (‘Black Widow’), Millie Bobby Brown (‘Enola Holmes’), Finn Wolfhard (‘It’), Gaten Matarazzo (‘Honor Society’) and Noah Schnapp (‘Bridge of Spies’).

And so… it ends. With somewhat of a bang, but also a slight whimper as the big finish proves to be as epic as you’d hope, but the more exciting moments are also sandbagged by protracted sequences that play the same beat over and over again.

    Script and Direction

Noah Schnapp as Will Byers in 'Stranger Things: Season 5.' Photo: NETFLIX © 2025.

Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer were behind the writing and directing for this giant wrap-up (the whole thing runs for around two hours and eight minutes, longer than many movies), and –– spoiler alert in case you haven’t seen it –– chose to largely keep following their pop cultural inspirations and go for a big ol’ happy ending. At least, mostly.

The script is baggy in places (there really was a world where this could have been about an hour and a half) and some of the moments are saccharine, but all in all, it’s a solid ending for the show.

And style-wise, the big final battle against Vecna and his even more powerful allies does deliver on the spectacle, while the extended wrap-up gives the characters some closure.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, and Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley in 'Stranger Things: Season 5.' Photo: Netflix © 2025.

The main cast are brought front and center once again, with the likes of Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo standing out once more.

On the other end of the spectrum, spare a thought for poor Winona Ryder, who mostly got reaction shots until one big moment and then the character coda.

It stumbled slightly, but for the most part, this ‘Stranger Things’ finale stuck the landing, offering a big, effects-heavy clash and then scope to explore the characters’ ongoing stories.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Volume 2: The Finale receives 80 out of 100.

What’s the plot of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Volume 1?

The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown.

Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s (Noah Schnapp) disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming…

Director Rian Johnson appeared to tease the third of his ‘Knives Out’ series of mysteries and walked on to the stage accompanied by a “Who done it” type mystery theme.

“I love a good surprise. This is the third Benoit Blanc movie that we’ve made and one thing that we strove to do with each one of them is to keep the audience guessing. It’s important for us to figure out new ways every time so just when you think you have it figured out, a new twist comes a long that you were not expecting. That’s what makes these movies special.”

Then, each member of the cast including Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Kerry Washington and Jeremy Renner, came out one by one to one-up the previous co-star. Washington appeared with a T-shirt gun to entice the crowd, but not to be outdone, Renner then appeared with two T-shirt guns and received an extremely warn welcome from the fans.

The two Academy Award winners then took the stage along with fellow cast members Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

Affleck had this to say about the movie:

“It’s great to be back together again on screen and we loved making this movie. It channels some of our all-time favorites like ‘Heat’ and ‘Training Day’.

In the film, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops who discover over 20 million dollars in cash hidden in a suspect’s house, which leads to distrust among their characters and the other police officers.

A new trailer for the film was shown to the audience at the Forum and during the broadcast but is not currently available online. Damon introduced the teaser trailer by saying:

“Netflix was not going to let us show you an exclusive first look at the film. In fact, the studio hasn’t even approved its release, so here is the first and I repeat only look at ‘The Rip’ coming to Netflix on January 16th, 2026.”

Next up was visionary director Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ presentation, which began with a video message from actor Jacob Elordi who plays the monster.

“I recently had the great pleasure of playing the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’. Guillermo is a real-life genius and I’m immensely grateful to be in the film. I’m proud of the work we all put into it.”

Guillermo del Toro himself, as well as actors Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth then took the stage to greet the fans and introduce the teaser trailer for the film.

“Thank you. I’m Guillermo del Toro. This is for me the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost a religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films, ‘Cronos’, ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, big time on ‘Pinocchio’, and a long, long, etc. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film even before I had a camera, and I have actively been pursuing it now for 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it is my biography. Now, tonight here, finally, we can share it with you.”

The stage was then set up like a sports broadcast with Rich Eisen interviewing Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and of course, Adam Sandler. Several supporting cast members including Jon Lovitz and an actor dressed as Abraham Lincoln were in the audience and asked clearly scripted questions.

After that, Sandler had this to say before introducing the final trailer for the sequel.

“First of all, Mr. Lincoln, great job on everything. Netflix, thanks for everything. How about today? This was fun. I’m hoping we have a lot of these. Now I have a question for all you nice people out there. Would anyone like to see the trailer for our new film?”

They watched behind the scenes videos from the making of the first season and were joined by Gaten Matarazzo and Millie Bobby Brown via a prerecorded message.

‘The Electric State’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Netflix on March 14th, ‘The Electric State’ is the latest big movie from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’/‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo and is set in a dystopian past where robots and mankind have been locked in conflict.

It’s just the latest effort from the filmmakers, who haven’t exactly had a warm critical reception for the work they’ve put out since ending their ‘Avengers’ run (they’re back on that particular duty with the next two movies), and unfortunately won’t do all that much to change the perception of them.

‘The Electric State’ is reaching for Spielbergian levels of exploring heart within technological tales, but it never quite makes it there.

A lot of what is entertaining about this new movie feels like it was borrowed from other, better movies, some of them Spielberg’s own –– there is definitely some DNA from ‘A.I.: Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Ready Player One‘ here in the story (adapted by the directors’ regular collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely from Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel.

While the source material offers a basic spine for the plot –– an alternate 1990s where humanity and robots have been locked in a conflict after the latter revolted against being employed to do all the grunt work people don’t want to –– and some of the visual inspiration, the movie takes those ideas and runs with them.

Yet what the team chooses to make its focus doesn’t always work that well. And to add to the feel of borrowed acclaim, chunks of the score sound like composer Alan Silvestri using discarded cuts from his ‘Avengers’ music.

Markus and McFeely have brought us well-thought-out stories before, even ones that must juggle multiple characters.

But in ‘The Electric State,’ the central character is Millie Bobby Brown’s Michelle, whose life is shattered when her parents and genius younger brother are killed in a car crash. At least, she thinks her brother is dead –– but when she’s visited unexpectedly by a robot based on his favourite childhood cartoon, she comes to believe he might actually be alive.

So begins a quest to find him, one that will take Michelle, smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) and his robot sidekick Herm (voiced by Anthony Mackie) into what is known as the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots were banished following the war.

The plot offers the opportunity for plenty of amusing robo-characters, but the sheer number just makes the film feel busy and underfocused, while the endless quips from the various robots don’t always land. The narrative is also locked into a fairly predictable progression –– you’ll likely guess where it’s all headed before too long.

    ‘The Electric State’. Photo: Netflix.

Still, there is some genuine emotion infused towards the end of the story.

As directors, the Russos have proved they can handle these big movies, but their more recent efforts on that front, including ‘The Gray Man’ have been blandly reductive releases despite the talent involved both on screen and behind the camera.

For ‘The Electric State’ that means a starry cast (most of them are on voice duty) and some very impressive visual effects, but with a $320 million budget, you’d expect that.

Millie Bobby Brown continues to prove she can anchor genre work, but the role of Michelle, the young woman at the center of the movie, doesn’t always offer her too many chances to prove it. She’s perfectly fine in the role, but little more than that.

Chris Pratt, meanwhile, is largely doing a riff on characters of this type he’s played before –– the lovable rogue we’ve met in the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Jurassic World,’ and Keats is very much a watered-down version of those.

Stanley Tucci is somewhat lumbered with a basic villain role, a tech mogul with shades of Elon Musk who claims to want to help humanity but is only too happy if there’s collateral damage.

(L to R) Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci in 'The Electric State'. Photo: Netflix.

Giancarlo Esposito is also an antagonist, the hard-nosed drone pilot and robot deactivation specialist Colonel Bradbury, but the part is very much another scowling villain role for the actor, who might want to look into some different parts.

Woody Norman as Michelle’s super-smart brother Chris has some nice notes to play, though he is naturally off screen for much of the running time. Still, if there is genuine emotion to be found at all, it’s in the human connection between Chris and Michelle.

Another Woody, this time Harrelson, plays Mr. Peanut, the southern-fried promotional robot of the snack treat. He’s decent, but mostly speaks in platitudes.

Elsewhere, the voice cast is a mixed bag –– Jenny Slate and Mackie are among the highlights, while Brian Cox is saddled with a one-joke character in Pop Fly, a baseball bot.

‘The Electric State’ seems unlikely to change many peoples’ opinion about the Russo’s non-MCU work. It’s certainly a sweeping story with some fun to be found, but it rarely leaves a mark on the level of movies it has been inspired by.

It’s a shame, as the creative team have clearly poured their hearts into it –– if only the results were better.

What’s the plot of ‘The Electric State’?

‘The Electric State’ is set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. Millie Bobby Brown stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising.

Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she’s visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher — Michelle’s genius younger brother whom she thought was dead. Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie).

As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colorful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

    • The first pictures from new sci-fi movie ‘The Electric State’ have landed.
    • Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt star.
    • Joe and Anthony Russo are the directors.

Since wrapping up their successful run of movies at Marvel, capped with the huge blockbuster ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ directing/sibling duo Joe and Anthony Russo have seen more mixed fortunes in terms of their filmmaking.

While they set up their own production company, their actual movies have been hit and miss –– the likes of ‘Cherry’ and ‘The Gray Man’ haven’t seen the same pop cultural impact as their time with Iron Man and the rest of the Marvel gang.

Now, before they prepare to head back to the MCU for more ‘Avengers’ action, the pair have an ambitious new science fiction film on the way.

Adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s book by their regular collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who found the source material and wrote a spec script), ‘The Electric State’ finds man and machine typically having trouble co-existing, with Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt starring in the story of a young woman looking for her missing brother.

The first pictures from the new movie are now online.

Brown discussed her character with Vanity Fair in a recent article:

“The note that I would always get is, she’s still human. She’s rebellious and yes, she doesn’t want to follow the rules and she’s incredibly hurt because she’s dealing with a lot of grief. But she’s not invincible. We’re technically both the same age, so I feel like it was just: What are moments that I wouldn’t show my weakness? What are moments that I would? And I just played with that. I really want her to show that she’s made of stone because I want that to be the perception of who she is. But actually, as you get to know her, she softens and she warms up. And I tried to implement as much of my own experiences into her as possible.”

Netflix has yet to confirm when the movie will be arriving, beyond setting it for a 2025 release. Given the scale of this thing, we’d imagine the company will at least grant it a limited theatrical run ahead of it arriving on users’ accounts.

  • Movie Review: ‘Damsel’

“There are many stories where a knight saves a damsel in distress. This is not one of them”. The Millie Bobby Brown led fantasy adventure ‘Damsel‘ lands on Netflix on March 8th, where she plays Elodie, a dutiful damsel set to marry a handsome prince.

Despite the beautiful gowns and gorgeous castle, Elodie soon realizes there’s something far more sinister lying under the guise of a royal wedding – a generational debt to be paid to a fearsome dragon, and she’s the sacrifice.

    Initial Thoughts

Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in 'Damsel.'
Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in ‘Damsel.’ Cr. John Wilson/Netflix ©2024.

This story isn’t your traditional fairy tale. There’s no prince coming to Elodie’s rescue, and she’s not falling in love. Instead, Elodiel has found herself betrayed and trapped in the dragon’s lair. The only person who can help her is herself. While there’s not a lot of dialogue in the film – as Elodie spends most of the time trying to escape from the dragon’s wrath – it makes up for it in action.

The film’s first act has quite a bit of exposition, setting up the origin of the sacrificial debt to the dragon, Elodie’s family’s dire financial situation, and why she was willing to marry a prince she’s never met before. However, once the film moved into the second act, it was gritty, brutal, and action-packed.

    Story and Direction

Robin Wright and Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo on the set of 'Damsel'.
(L to R) Robin Wright and Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo on the set of ‘Damsel’. Cr. John Wilson/Netflix ©2024.

‘Damsel’ is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, with an original screenplay by Dan Mazeau. Based on the novel by New York Times best-selling author Evelyn Skye, this film is a collaboration between Netflix and Random House.

The movie quickly establishes the reason why the kingdom of Aurea owed an ancient debt to the dragon and why it must take place every generation. The flashback scene of the then-King of Aurea and the dragon was far more brutal than expected, with his army succumbing to the dragon’s deadly fire breath.

Fast forward to centuries later, we meet Elodie and her family in their kingdom of Inophe. The good-natured princess was always willing to help out the people of her realm, not afraid to get her hands dirty. Elodie had a great relationship with her father, Lord Bayford (Ray Winston), her sister Floria (Brooke Carter), and her stepmother, Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett).

Ray Winstone as Lord Bayford and Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford in 'Damsel.'
(L to R) Ray Winstone as Lord Bayford and Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford in ‘Damsel.’ Cr. Netflix ©2023.

Knowing her realm was in trouble, and the marriage to Prince Henry of Aurea would help her people exponentially, Elodie put her own feelings aside and agreed, even if the proposal of marriage came for a mysterious woman clad in red whose sinister presence should have been questioned.

Upon Elodie’s arrival in Aurea, her ship sails past dense fog with statues of terrifying dragons lining the course, eluding to the unknown danger she’ll soon face. However, the film does a great job of making Aurea look spectacular once the ship breaks through the fog with bright green lands as far as the eye can see, and a stunning castle, making it a perfect juxtaposition of the prior scene.

Despite the happy facade of a royal wedding, Elodie soon finds out the cruel trap that’s been laid for her as she is tossed without a care into the dragon’s pit. The film did not pull punches when it came to Elodie’s suffering and injuries while she was in the depths of the lair, giving her almost a “John McClane” level of scrapes, cuts, and bruises.

Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in 'Damsel.'
Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in ‘Damsel.’ Cr. John Wilson/Netflix ©2023.

It was great to see how Elodie would survive and outsmart the dragon as more layers of the story are revealed. She’s not imbued with super-human powers, so it was great watching her relying on her own physical strength and survival skills as she navigates through the Dragon’s den. The movie did make a point of showing Elodie’s fascination with drawing and creating mazes – but the film never put this particular (and seemingly perfect) skill to use where she would map out the lair on her own.

The highlight of the film lies in Elodie’s encounter in the lair, where her determination to survive is captivating and most interesting to watch. When it came to the dialogue, much of it felt awkward or fast-tracked, with the exception of the relationship between Elodie and her sister Floria and a brief conversation between Robin Wright’s Queen Isabelle and Angela Bassett’s Lady Bayford.

    Performances

Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie, Nick Robinson as Prince Henry, Robin Wright as Queen Isabelle and Milo Twomey as King Roderick in 'Damsel.'
(L to R) Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie, Nick Robinson as Prince Henry, Robin Wright as Queen Isabelle and Milo Twomey as King Roderick in ‘Damsel.’ Cr. Netflix ©2023.

It is clear that Millie Bobby Brown isn’t afraid to get down and dirty in this role as her character stumbles, crawls, and climbs through the underground lair. A majority of her scenes are by herself, and her range of emotions, from despair to determination, is perfectly portrayed. This film showcases her ability to not only carry a feature film on her shoulders but also be so captivating that the audience can’t help but cheer her on.

While Brown shines in the film, the other characters feel at times forgotten. The dialogue between characters is mostly short lived and only used as a way to propel the story forward rather than developing their character. Robin Wright was terrific as Queen Isabelle, whose beautiful smile hides a vicious agenda. It’s unfortunate that Wright and Bassett were given so little to do in the film, and their talents felt wasted.

    Final Thoughts

Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in 'Damsel.'
Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie in ‘Damsel.’ Cr. John Wilson/Netflix ©2023.

Add this movie to the list of great female-empowering films that are fun to watch. It’s dark and gritty, has a ton of action, and breaks the “damsel in distress” trope. The story isn’t exactly original, but there are more twists and surprises than one can expect. While the dialogue lacked in parts, the movie shines the most when Millie Bobby Brown goes up against the dragon, putting her survival skills and fighting spirit to use.

‘Damsel’’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

  • New ‘Enola Holmes 2’ Trailer

    tkkMwdr1

In 2020, Millie Bobby Brown proved she was more than just Eleven from ‘Stranger Things’ for Netflix, playing the character of Enola Holmes in the first movie named for her. It was a big success for the streaming service, and we already knew that a sequel was on the way.

At this year’s big TUDUM virtual event, Netflix offered the first full trailer for the new movie.

The first movie found Enola taking her first steps in her detective brothers’ path, using her genius intellect to figure out why her mother went missing and how it all ties into a conspiracy around a mysterious young lord.

Here’s the plot for this one… Fresh off the triumph of solving her first case, Enola Holmes (Brown) follows in the footsteps of her famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), and opens her own agency — only to find that life as a female detective-for-hire isn’t as easy as it seems.

Not only are there the sexist bores who don’t believe a young woman can run such a business, there are all the customers who show up hoping that she can connect them with Sherlock.

Resigned to accepting the cold realities of adulthood, she is about to close shop when a penniless matchstick girl offers Enola her first official job: to find her missing sister.

Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes in Netflix's 'Enola Holmes 2.'

But this case proves to be far more puzzling than expected, as Enola is thrown into a dangerous new world — from London’s sinister factories and colorful music halls to the highest echelons of society and 221B Baker Street itself. Since the case appears to intersect with one that has been vexing her sibling.

As the sparks of a deadly conspiracy ignite, Enola must call upon the help of friends — and Sherlock himself — to unravel her mystery. The game, it seems, has found its feet again!

The cast this time includes the returning likes of Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge (as Tewkesbury), Susan Wokoma (as Edith) and Adeel Akhtar (as Lestrade). New the ensemble are ‘Dune’s Sharon Duncan-Brewster and ‘Sandman’s David Thewlis, who, from the looks of the trailer is a police chief not all that pleased to learn of Enola’s new status as a detective.

Behind the camera is the same team as the 2020 movie – director Harry Bradbeer and writer Jack Thorne, once again adapting Springer’s ‘Enola Holmes’ book series. And, of course, some credit goes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the Sherlock Holmes characters from which ‘Enola’ draws its inspiration.

This sequel promises to be just as packed with action and comedy, with more of the to-camera asides from Enola as she makes her way through this latest adventure.

‘Enola Holmes 2’ will debut on Netflix on November 4th.

Roughly two years ago, Netflix cemented its association with ‘Stranger Things’ star Millie Bobby Brown by having her star in and produce ‘Enola Holmes’, in which she plays Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister.

Co-starring Henry Cavill as Sherlock, Sam Claflin as eldest brother Mycroft and Helena Bonham Carter as her troubled mother Eudoria Holmes, it was a hit for the streaming service and naturally spawned talk of a sequel, not least because the movie adapted Nancy Springer’s book series, which meant other stories were available.

The first movie found Enola taking her first steps in her detective brothers’ path, using her genius intellect to figure out why her mother went missing and how it all ties into a conspiracy around a mysterious young lord.

And, of course, some credit goes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the Sherlock Holmes characters from which ‘Enola’ draws its inspiration.

Netflix and the filmmakers will, of course, be hoping to avoid the legal troubles that followed the release of the original. The Conan Doyle estate brought a lawsuit claiming that the “warmer” Sherlock as portrayed by Cavill is drawn from stories that are still under copyright. The case was eventually dismissed, though in a way that points to a settlement being paid. With luck, that’ll ensure that Enola stays out of the courtroom this time – at least, off the screen.

The pair has already cast Millie Bobbie Brown and Chris Pratt (because they seemingly refuse to make a film post-Avengers without one of the Marvel heroes in it) in the movie.

Now they’re adding an eclectic group of supporting roles, with Michelle Yeoh, Stanley Tucci, Brian Cox and Jenny Slate now aboard.

Stålenhag’s lushly illustrated novel is set in a post-apocalyptic 1997 and tells the story of a teenage girl (Brown) who realizes that a strange but sweet robot who comes to her has actually been sent by her missing brother. She and the robot set out to find the brother in an imaginative world of humans mixing with all manner of tech, uncovering a grand conspiracy in the process.

Regular Russo writing collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the script for the new movie after their company, AGBO, snapped up the rights and quickly sold a package including the writers, directors and Brown to Universal.

Yet it didn’t quite coalesce there, and, with the deal back up for grabs, Netflix locked it down. “This is a very human story about a teenage girl with all the powers of a teenage girl and nothing more,” Markus told Deadline around the time of the Universal deal. “Another thing we are really proud of when it comes to this story is all the major characters, barring one supporting character, are women which is super exciting to be involved in.”

There are no details of who the new arrivals might be playing, though Deadline’s report on the latest casting mentions that Cox and Slate will be lending their voices to CG characters.

And even though Netflix might love for the AGBO team to start work on the ‘Gray Man’ sequel and spin-off that was announced in the wake of its streaming success, this is certainly an intriguing prospect that is now crammed full of great actors.

Yeoh, of course, is a veteran enjoying current success with ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. Cox is the foul-mouthed patriarch at the heart of HBO hit ‘Succession’. Tucci needs little introduction but was most recently seen on the big screen in a small role for ‘The King’s Man’. Alexander, most famous for ‘Seinfeld’ on TV, worked on comedy pic ‘Faith Based’. And Slate can be heard in ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ (and has a quick role in ‘Everything Everywhere’, where she causes trouble for Yeoh’s Evelyn.

Set to kick off shooting this fall, there’s no word yet of a date for ‘The Electric State’.

  • Netflix Announces Next TUDUM Event

Last September, Netflix offered fans some intriguing looks at upcoming shows and movies, and proved to be a major success, garnering over 25 million views, with the total number of views for the pre-shows, clips, trailers, and other content from the fan event totaling nearly 695 million views with over 3.3 billion impressions across 184 countries.

It’s perhaps not surprising, then, that the company would look to do it again, so mark September 24th on your calendar, as that’s when Netflix will launch the next TUDUM fan event via YouTube.

The schedule for 2022’s TUDUM: A Netflix Global Fan Event will kick off at 11:00 am KST (which is 7:00 pm PT on September 23rd). This first event will focus on the many exciting projects that are coming out of Korea for the streaming service – which means we could possibly get some news about the second season of ‘Squid Game’ and much more.

The next event will be held a few hours later at 11:00 am IST (or 10:30 pm PT on September 23rd). This event will focus on projects coming to Netflix from India.

US viewers get their official turn at 10:00 am PT on September 24th, where fans will get exclusive news from the shows and movies coming out of the United States and Europe, as well as an additional event that previews the projects that are coming from Latin America.

Finally, the last event will be held at 1:00 pm JST on September 25 (9:00 pm PT on September 24th), during which TUDUM will shine a light on shows and films from Japan.

“Tune in for an exciting day of exclusive news, never-before-seen footage, trailers, and first looks, as well as interviews with Netflix’s biggest stars and creators,” says the official announcement. “The free virtual event is a celebration of Netflix fandom and is dedicated to sharing the scoop on over 100 fan favorite shows, films and specials from across the globe.”

Netflix isn’t revealing exactly what will be featured during the new event – you’ll have to be patient – but we can surely expect updates on the likes of ‘Bridgerton’s third season, the next run of ‘The Crown’, and ‘Knives Out’ sequel ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’.

And even though the latest seasons of ‘Cobra Kai’ and ‘The Sandman’ will have already launched, we may still get interviews with the stars and creators, plus behind the scenes secrets.

The first TUDUM was a lot of fun, featuring Millie Bobby Brown, the ‘Bridgerton’ cast and more, and delivered plenty of updates. This next incarnation promises to be even bigger. Fingers crossed for some huge revelation – ‘The Gray Man 2’, anyone?

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Runtimes Will be Shorter Than Season 4

Chances are a lot of you spent the 4th of July holiday weekend consuming the final two episodes of ‘Stranger Things’ fourth season, which arrived on Netflix on July 1st.

And if you’ve gotten through the bumper-sized duo, you’ll likely be speculating about the future for the show. Be warned that there are spoilers for the end of Season 4, though nothing too massive.

While every season of the series has ended with tendrils of story still to be resolved – the third, for example, saw Eleven powerless and Hopper trapped in Russia following the Battle of Starcourt – but Season4 pushed that even further, with the Upside Down fully invading Hawkins and our heroes facing yet another terrifying clash.

Yet while it left viewers eagerly anticipating the next set of episodes, we can look forward to

“The only reason we don’t expect to be as long is because typically — or this season, if you look at it, it’s almost a two-hour ramp up before our kids really get drawn into a supernatural mystery,” Matt Duffer explained on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. “You get to know them, you get to see them in their lives, they’re struggling with adapting to high school and so forth. Steve’s trying to find a date, all of that. None of that is obviously going to be occurring in the first two episodes. For the first time ever, we don’t wrap things up at the end of four. Characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that’s going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different.”

That said, it appears the pair are still considering a season finale that is “a lot longer” referencing ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s multiple endings. But they’re probably joking about that…

In other ‘Stranger’ news, the brothers also referenced the wild speculation that has happened since they announced a planned spin-off to the series. Apparently no-one (save series actor Finn Wolfhard) has gotten close to guessing what it will be. And not even the Netflix executives know.

I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number,” Matt says. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”

According to the brothers, the connective tissue will not be on the casting front, instead linked by “storytelling sensibility”. And the duo is considering handing over the reins of any spin-off to others when they feel ready to head on to new projects.

With the writers’ room for the next season opening up in August, there’s no indication yet when ‘Stranger Things’ will be back with new episodes.
