  • Akiva Goldsman Talks ‘Constantine’ and ‘I Am Legend’ Sequels

Business-heavy stories about producers renewing the deals with studios don’t usually offer up too many interesting nuggets of news. But when that filmmaker is Akiva Goldsman, and he’s involved with two big franchises in ‘Constantine’ and ‘I Am Legend’––and is happy to talk about them––that’s a different situation.

So with Goldsman’s Weed Road company returning to Warner Bros. (which is almost news in itself given the company’s recent round of cost-cutting and tax write-offs), there is an update on both the comic book adaptation starring Keanu Reeves and the post-apocalyptic thriller that, seemingly against the odds given how the first movie ended, appears set to return Will Smith to screens.

What’s the latest on ‘Constantine’s sequel?

2005’s ‘Constantine’ brought the character first created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette, Rick Veitch, and John Totleben (and developed by Garth Ennis and Jamie Delano’s ‘Hellblazer’ comics) to screens.

He’s as supernatural exorcist and demonologist, and something of a detective, though his personal life is a mess and his personal grooming leaves something to be desired.

In the movie, Reeves’ Constantine is approached by Detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) who needs his help to prove that her twin sister Isabel’s (also Weisz) death was not a suicide. As he looks into Isabel’s death, he realizes demons are trying to break through to the human world, and his battles lead him into the middle of a conflict between the Angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) and Satan (Peter Stomare).

The sequel, which Goldsman is writing and producing (alongside J.J. Abrams), has Reeves back to star and Francis Lawrence once again directing. It was announced last year.

Says Goldman to Deadline about the project,

“This is a credit to Keanu, who endlessly has said, ‘this is the character I want to return to.’ Finally, he said it enough times that it stuck. The character is very much Keanu and the way he and Francis saw the world of good and evil, and the wonderful and authentic noir where there is a world behind the world of good and evil coexist with our world right up close. Beyond that, we are still discovering it as I am writing the script.”

What’s new with the ‘I Am Legend’ sequel?

‘I Am Legend,’ meanwhile, was a 2007 horror action thriller, coincidentally also directed by Lawrence. It adapted Richard Matheson’s much-praised 1954 novel, which posited a world where a devastating virus had wiped out almost all of humanity and turned the rest into vampire-like mutants who roam the world looking for victims.

Robert Neville, the focus of the story, goes on a mission to find the scientific basis for the pandemic that caused all this, and chronicles his increasingly stressed encounters with his fellow former humans.

In the movie, Smith plays Neville, who is an army virologist surviving in a ruined New York and looking to find a cure for the virus that caused all the trouble––which was originally a mutated measles strain intended to cure cancer. His wife and daughter died in a helicopter crash as they attempted to flee a quarantine of Manhattan and Neville has company in the shape of his German Shepherd dog Sam.

We learned about a potential sequel nearly a year ago, but at that point speculated that it seemed unlikely to star Smith since (spoiler alert) his character appeared to die at the end, heroically sacrificing his life after finally finding a cure so other survivors (Alice Braga’s Anna and her son, Ethan, played by Charlie Tahan) may live.

Yet that was in the cinematic cut––a later home entertainment release has an alternate where In the ending that wasn’t included in the theatrical cut, the zombies leave Smith’s Neville alone once he returns the body he was testing the cure on back to them. Smith, Anna and Ethan travel to Vermont to spread the cure.

Goldsman, who is also writing that movie (Lawrence is not attached to direct, at least not yet), didn’t specify exactly how Smith’s character story would continue, nor did he offer up any details as to how fellow attached star Michael B. Jordan might fit in.

Goldsman had this to say about the movie,

“This will start a few decades later than the first. “I’m obsessed with ‘The Last of Us,’ where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the empire state building, but the possibilities are endless. We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”

It’s perhaps no surprise that the huge HBO Max hit video game adaptation would be a touchstone, even though the new ‘Legend’ has been in development long before it infected the pop cultural consciousness.

We’ll have to wait and see what exactly happens with the ‘Legend’ follow-up. Given how busy Goldsman is (he also juggles time spent working on ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ series for Paramount+ and a wealth of other projects in development), it could be a while before either movie is ready to go before cameras. We’d predict that the ‘Constantine’ follow-up would be first.

  • Michael B. Jordan Says ‘Creed IV’ is “For Sure”

With ‘Creed III’ arriving next month, star (and, on this occasion, director) Michael B. Jordan is being asked about the future of the boxing movies that feature him as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, the son of the late Apollo (Carl Weathers in the ‘Rocky’ movies).

Talking with IGN about ‘Creed III’, Jordan didn’t expand much on his ideas, but did say that he intends to stick with the ‘Creed’ franchise. Answering questions about a potential fourth movie, he said it was “for sure”.

And, as with every popular movie from a studio these days, it appears there will be spin-offs of some fashion. “I just want to expand the ‘Creed’-verse within reason, but definitely expect other things around ‘Creed’ for sure.”

It’s just the latest step for the ever-expanding spin-off from the ‘Rocky’ movies, though the ‘Creed’ films are moving away from Sylvester Stallone’s veteran boxer.

Through 2015’s ‘Creed’ (directed by Ryan Coogler) and 2018’s ‘Creed II’ (with Steven Caple Jr. in the director’s chair), Donnie has battled his demons, fought powerful opponents in the ring and tried to forge a family life with Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and their daughter, who has inherited her mother’s hearing difficulties.

‘Creed III’ moves the story forward a few years but also back several, as the story sees Donnie reconnecting with old friend and prodigy Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who went to prison, and resents that Adonis did not (as he was involved in the incident).

Out of Jail and quietly burning with vengeance, Anderson threatens Donnie – and Adonis decides to face him in the place he knows best – the ring. And without Rocky in his life for this round, this time, the fight is truly personal.

And it’s even more personal for the man in front of the camera – who steps behind it for the first time. Michael B. Jordan, who has played Adonis since the first film, is also here the director.

“I think for me it was the perfect time,” says Jordan.. “I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision. And having a character that I’ve played twice before, it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy. So to be able to tell a story of where I believe Adonis is at, and also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say as a young man, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share that, share a piece of myself with the world––through these characters and through this story. You just gotta jump in the deep end and go for it, you know?”

‘Creed III’ will be in theaters on March 3rd.

  • Michael B. Jordan Back on Duty For ‘Rainbow Six’

Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly in Prime Video's 'Without Remorse.'
Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly in Prime Video’s ‘Without Remorse.’

Back in 2021, Michael B. Jordan hit screens as the Tom Clancy-created military intelligence character John Clark in ‘Without Remorse’, which had originally been planned as a theatrical release before Paramount, concerned about the pandemic’s impact on box office, shipped the movie off to Prime Video.

But even further back than that, when Jordan was first talked about as playing Clark, there was talk of fellow Clancy/Clark novel ‘Rainbow Six’ in development. And that is now coming to fruition, with Chad Stahelski in the director’s seat.

Clark, AKA John Terrence Kelly, is an ex-Navy Seal-turned-operations officer for the CIA (and colleague of Jack Ryan) who appears in 17 Clancy novels starting with 1988’s ‘The Cardinal of the Kremlin’. Though mainly seen as a secondary character who helps Ryan with more of the physical elements of any mission, Clark finally stepped into the spotlight with ‘Without Remorse’, which showed how he came to work for the agency.

‘Rainbow Six’, for its part, continues Clark’s story as he leads the anti-terrorist squad known as Rainbow (the “six” is his callsign). Rainbow consists of two operational teams of elite soldiers from NATO countries, supplemented by intelligence and technological experts from the FBI, MI6, and Mossad.

In the book, Clark and his team must unravel and stop a huge international conspiracy with the aim of wiping out nearly all of humanity. The title has also spawned a series of video games.

No writer is listed on the movie yet, and we don’t know how the film will adapt the book––‘Without Remorse’ made some changes to Clark’s story and the book’s plot, so we’d expect ‘Rainbow Six’ to similarly make alterations.

‘Without Remorse’, directed by Stefano Sollima, was met with mixed reviews, but audiences appreciated Jordan’s work as Clark. And while the first movie was sent to streaming, the current plan from Paramount is to release ‘Rainbow Six’ theatrically.

Stahelski is certainly a good choice for an action movie like this––the former stuntman has spent the last few years bringing the ‘John Wick’ films to life after co-directing the first one. Since then, his fellow director David Leitch has gone further afield with the likes of ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Bullet Train’.

Yet while he’s been in a ‘Wick’ frame of mind (Chapter 4 arrives on March 24th), Stahelski has also been developing other projects, including a ‘Highlander’ reboot. He’s also active as a producer on movies such as ‘Day Shift’ and Halle Berry MMA drama ‘Bruised’.

Given the busy schedule of the leading man (Jordan has ‘Creed III’, which also marks his directorial debut, due on March 3rd) and the newly recruited director, it’s anyone’s guess when ‘Rainbow Six’ might be ready for release, but this is certainly positive forward movement.

This is less breaking news and more “I must break you” news.

Given how successful the two ‘Creed’ movies – which continue the story of the ‘Rocky’ films while focusing on Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the son of Apollo Creed, as so memorably played by Carl Weathers in the 1970s and ‘80s – it’s not surprising that studio MGM might be considering spin-offs.

Word arrives today that just such an idea, a movie based around Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, is moving to the script stage.

Drago, of course, was the hulking Russian antagonist in 1985’s ‘Rocky IV,’ (who kills Apollo Creed, the fiend). Continuing the family theme, his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) was the threat to Adonis in 2018’s ‘Creed II’.

Lundgren himself acted as hype man for a Drago movie back in November last year when talking to The Hollywood Reporter. After admitting his disappointment that a fan-pleasing fight with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa hit the cutting room floor from ‘Creed II’, he teased seeing more of Drago: “I think there’s some talk about doing a whole spinoff on Drago with MGM. So you may get more of that.”

According to The Wrap, Robert Lawton is now on board to write the script for the new movie. He reportedly impressed executives with his spec screenplay ‘Becoming Rocky’ which chronicled the behind-the-scenes efforts to make the 1976 original.

Michael B. Jordan and Florian Munteanu in 2018's 'Creed II.'
(L to R) Michael B. Jordan and Florian Munteanu in 2018’s ‘Creed II.’

And he had an idea for a Drago-centric movie that excited MGM’s team enough to score him the job. No details have emerged about what that story might be, but there is plenty of scope for more of Drago and potentially Viktor’s story to be told.

Now we wait to see whether the bell rings on this one and if a director steps aboard to guide it out of the development dressing room.

There is related, and not so good news about the next iteration of the main ‘Creed’ franchise, though chances are it’s more to give the movie time to be finished.

Star Jordan – who once again leads the cast as Adonis – stepped up to direct this latest movie, but while it was targeting a November 23rd release date until recently, it is now on the move to March 3rd next year.

And that’s not exactly a prime position to be in, since it puts ‘Creed III’ in the ring with Paramount’s big fantasy adventure ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’, which had a warm reception (for its trailer, at least) at last weekend’s Comic-Con.

And this ‘Creed’ will be without possibly its heaviest hitter besides Jordan, as this is the first in the new series not to include Stallone.

Still, ‘Creed III’ still boasts Tessa Thompson reprising her role as Donnie’s girlfriend Bianca and Phylicia Rashad is returning as his stepmother Mary Anne in its corner.

  • ‘I Am Legend’ Sequel in the Works

    Will Smith with dog
Will Smith in 2007’s ‘I Am Legend.’

Even though there had been talk of follow-up movies in the past, we’re not sure we would have predicted today as the date that a sequel to 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller ‘I am Legend’ would be announced.

And yet, here we are, with word from Deadline that original lead Will Smith will return and Michael B. Jordan will also star.

‘I am Legend’, in case it has slipped into the cloudy recesses of your memory, saw writers Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich adapting Richard Matheson’s much-praised 1954 novel, which posited a world where a devastating virus (far-fetched, we know) had wiped out almost all of humanity and turned the rest into vampire-like mutants who roam the world looking for victims.

Robert Neville, the focus of the story, goes on a mission to find the scientific basis for the pandemic that caused all this, and chronicles his increasingly stressed encounters with his fellow former humans.

The book was adapted several times into movies, including 1964’s ‘The Last Man on Earth’, 1971’s ‘The Omega Man’ and then the 2007 movie.

In that adaptation, directed by ‘Constantine’s Francis Lawrence, Smith plays Neville, who is an army virologist surviving in a ruined New York and looking to find a cure for the virus that caused all the trouble – which was originally a mutated measles strain intended to cure cancer. His wife and daughter died in a helicopter crash as they attempted to flee a quarantine of Manhattan and Neville has company in the shape of his German Shepherd dog Sam.

    Smith and dog 2
Will Smith in 2007’s ‘I Am Legend.’

And so as to avoid spoilers for the film (even if it is 14 years old now), we’ll just say that things don’t go so well for Neville.

Which poses something of a quandary that the new movie would have to address – how does Smith fit into the storyline here? While the movie suggests that Neville’s heroic actions have given new meaning to the title, there’s a chance we’ll see him in flashback to fill in other details of his life before the pandemic and before he confronts his foes.

As for who Jordan might play? He’s not the right fit to be a younger Smith, so perhaps the story will be told from the perspective of a later survivor as the world struggles to get back to normal? What if he was a mutant who was ultimately cured, but must wrangle with what he did in the past?

However it works out, that’s an issue for Goldsman to solve, as he’s back to write the sequel. No director is attached yet.

And Smith posted a teasing image about the project to his Instagram page…

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Casqkx_v0fk/

Smith is currently enjoying plenty of Oscar buzz and award wins for his role in ‘King Richard’ and will next be seen in Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Emancipation’. Jordan, meanwhile, is making his directorial debut while also staying in the lead role for ‘Creed III’.

Given that the ‘I Am Legend’ sequel is still at a relatively early stage, there’s no sign of when it might hit theaters.

  • Michael B. Jordan Legal Drama ‘Just Mercy’ Bumped Up Into Awards Season

Michael B. Jordan Legal Drama ‘Just Mercy’ Bumped Up Into Awards Season

    Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. just moved the “based on a true story” legal drama “Just Mercy” from January 2020 to December 2019, making it eligible for the 2019 awards season.

The film, which was originally set for a January 27 release, will now open in limited release on December 25.  That means star Michael B. Jordan and his Oscar-winning costars Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx just got added to everyone’s awards scoreboard.

The “Black Panther” and “Creed” star plays attorney Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. The film follows the case of death row inmate Walter McMillan (played by Jamie Foxx), who was convicted for a 1986 murder in Alabama.

It was Stevenson’s first case as an attorney — damn, this story is just made for awards season — and he proved that prosecution had suppressed evidence at the original trial.

Stevenson went on to write the book the film is based on, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.”

Larson costars as Eva Ansley, who confounded EJI with Stevenson. Rounding out the cast: Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, Rob Morgan and O’Shea Jackson, Jr.

Jordan was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for “Fruitvale Station,” but has gotten no Oscar love so far.

“Just Mercy” will open wide on Jan. 10.

‘Spider-Man’ Director Jon Watts in Talks to Direct Michael B. Jordan in ‘Methusaleh’

    Sony

The long-in-development “Methusaleh” movie may have found its director.

Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Far From Home”) is in early talks to direct the film, which will star Michael B. Jordan, according to Deadline.

Jordan is also set to produce under his Outlier Society banner, which has a deal with Warner Bros.

The story follows a man who has managed to stay alive for over 400 years, though he does not physically appear to age. In that time, he has accumulated vast intellectual knowledge, from multiple languages to the sciences, as well as survival skills.

The project has been in the works for a long time at Warner Bros. At one point, Tom Cruise was interested in playing the central character. The “Highlander”-like mythology has franchise potential.

Warner Bros. has been developing a “Methuselah” movie, and it has added a high-profile star and producer.

Michael B. Jordan has joined the project, Variety reports. He’ll produce via his production company, Outlier Society, joined by David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday. Warner Bros. has reportedly had the project in development for several years, with Tony Gilroy (“Beirut”) penning the latest draft of the script.

The story centers on the longest-living figure in the Bible, Methuselah, who is the son of Enoch. Jordan’s interest in the project may stem from his background. He has shared in the past that he “grew up in church,” telling Essence magazine in 2014 that he considers himself “spiritual.”

Jordan most recently starred in “Creed II,” and he has the lead role in the upcoming biographical drama “Just Mercy,” due out in 2020. He’s nabbed a number of key roles in recent years, especially following the success of “Creed” in 2015.

Michael B. Jordan will star in the new “creature feature” film from “Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

All we know about it is that it’s based on an original idea by the director and set in the filmmaker’s hometown of Detroit. It will likely be shot there as well.

Jordan will also serve as co-producer through his Outlier Society company, which co-produced last year’s Emmy-nominated “Fahrenheit 451” for HBO. Outlier is also developing the fantasy “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.”

The actor, who’s known for his roles in “Creed” and “Fruitvale Station,” played Killmonger in Marvel’s “Black Panther.”

Coincidentally, Vogt-Roberts’ last film “Kong: Skull Island,” which grossed grossed over $545 million worldwide, starred fellow MCU actors Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brie Larson.
