15 Things You Never Knew About ‘Alien’ on its 40th Anniversary

    20th Century Fox

It’s now been 40 years since “Alien” hit theaters and kicked off one of the most popular sci-fi movie franchises of all time. From the unexpected downsides of the Xenomorph costume to the Hollywood stars who almost appeared in the movie, here are 15 things you might not have known about the making of “Alien.”

    1. The original screenplay featured the title “Star Beast,” but writer Dan O’Bannon decided “Alien” was more effective and direct.

    2. Harrison Ford was originally offered the role of Captain Dallas but turned  down the part.

    Warner Bros.

    3. According to director Ridley Scott, Meryl Streep was also strongly considered for the role of Ripley and may well have been cast if not for the sudden death of her partner, John Cazale.

    4. Jon Finch was originally cast as Kane, but had to drop out on the first day of filming due to complications from diabetes.

    20th Century Fox

    5. H.R. Giger‘s original Xenomorph design included visible eyes, but this was removed in order to give the creature a more inhuman appearance. Scott also purposely avoided filming the Xenomorph straight-on, in order to emphasize its terrifying nature.

    6. In order to create the set for the Xenomorph egg chamber, the crew borrowed a set of laser lights from The Who, who were rehearsing on a nearby sound stage.

    20th Century Fox

    7. The facehugger was originally meant to be painted green, but O’Bannon liked the stark, humanoid look of the unpainted puppet and chose to leave it as-is.

    8. Many of the gore effects were achieved by using raw animal parts, including cattle hearts and sheep intestines. That helped fuel the actors’ genuine reaction of fear during the infamous chestburster scene.

    20th Century Fox

    9. The names for the Nostromo crew members were chosen in part because they’re gender-neutral. None of the characters have a specified gender in the screenplay.

    10. The crew had to design a special swing for actor Bolaji Badejo because his Xenomorph costume made it impossible to sit down in between takes.

    20th Century Fox

    11. One of the early shots of the interior of the Nostromo features a coffee grinder hanging on a wall. That prop was later used to create the Mr. Fusion engine in “Back to the Future.”

    12. Most of the creatures models had to be repainted every single day due to the corrosive effects of the slime used to coat them.

    13. The Space Jockey prop measured a full 26 feet tall. Unfortunately, it was accidentally destroyed when a discarded cigarette set it on fire.

    20th Century Fox

    14. One of the many deleted scenes from “Alien” features Ripley and Dallas having casual sex as a way of relieving the boredom of their journey. Scott eventually re-purposed that idea for 2012’s “Prometheus.”

    15. The Xenomorph only appears on-screen for a total of four minutes in the theatrical cut.

‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Trailer: The Monterey Five Face New Suspicions

    HBO

Secrets and lies continue to wreak havoc on “Big Little Lies” Season 2.

HBO released the trailer for the second season of the drama, which finds the “Monterey Five” — Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz — dogged by continued suspicions over their actions on trivia night, which ended with the death of Alexander Skarsgard‘s Perry Wright, the abusive husband of Kidman’s Celeste.

Now his formidable mother (Meryl Streep) is in town, asking questions.

“I want to know what happened that night,” she tells Witherspoon’s Madeline Martha Mackenzie. “I’m very tempted to ask you, but I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?”

The women also have to deal with their new notoriety in town, as they’ve all but been branded with scarlet letters. And Kravitz’s Bonnie Carlson struggles with her feelings of guilt for pushing Perry down the stairs to his death. Will she crack under the pressure and ‘fess up?

“Big Little Lies” Season 2 premieres June 9 on HBO.

    HBO

How do you top the first season of a series that employs A-listers and Oscar winners including Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman? Oh, just add the greatest actress of all time, Meryl Streep. That’s exactly what HBO’s “Big Little Lies” is doing for its upcoming sophomore season, but according to Kidman, that casting coup was a lot easier than you’d think.

In an interview with Variety, Kidman dished about getting Streep to sign on for “BLL” season two, adding some more background to the story previously shared by Witherspoon. While Witherspoon noted that they had sent Streep a script, Kidman revealed that their fellow Academy Award winner didn’t even look at it before making up her mind, a decision timed to the night that the show won the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film earlier this year.

“She goes, ‘I suppose now I have to join you,’” Kidman recalled to Variety of Streep’s response, which she emailed to both Kidman and Witherspoon. “And we were like, ‘What?’ The two of us were just shocked. … She hadn’t even read it. That’s how much she wanted to support us.”

Of course, Kidman quickly realized that getting Streep — who plays her mother-in-law — on board was a lot more intimidating than she anticipated, admitting to Variety that she was “terrified” of “acting opposite the great one.” We can only imagine. But somehow, we have a feeling that Kidman (who snagged both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for “BLL” season one) rose to the challenge.

Of course, even setting aside Streep’s involvement, it sounds like season two of the series will be excellent. According to Kidman, she and Witherspoon — who co-produce the show — wanted to “deliver a series for [Streep] that she’s great in. Reese and I were like, ‘We want this for her and for the other women [in the cast].’ They have much stronger roles in the second one.”

We can’t wait to see it. (And find out what on earth causes Witherspoon to hurl her ice cream at Streep.) Season two of “Big Little Lies” is expected to debut on HBO sometime in 2019.

Word came in January that none other than Meryl Streep had joined “Big Little Lies” Season 2, but what was missing from reports at the time was the hilarious way the three-time Oscar winner accepted her role.

Luckily, that has changed. Reese Witherspoon was recently a guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and the late-night host asked her how Streep got involved. Witherspoon then kindly told him the whole tale.

It started out pretty much how you’d expect: Witherspoon and her fellow executive producer and co-star Nicole Kidman sent Streep the script. Then, they followed up via email. It was after that that Streep gave them a call — and accepted in funny fashion.

“She called us the day of the Golden Globes, and was like, ‘Well, I know your show is really struggling … so I’ve decided to join and make it even better,” Witherspoon told Fallon, laughing as she claimed that Streep’s comment was true.

Of course, the show wasn’t exactly hard up for either talent or accolades. At the very same Golden Globes that Witherspoon referenced, the drama won the award for Best Miniseries or Television Film, while Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard, and Laura Dern all took home individual awards. That’s what makes Streep’s comments so entertaining, combined with the fact that she’s Meryl Streep and almost definitely will make it even better.

Witherspoon and Kidman loved Streep’s response, too. Witherspoon said she and her co-star were screaming silently and hugging themselves when she gave them the news. Aww!

Watch Witherspoon tell the story below, starting at 1:23.

“Big Little Lies” Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2019. “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Meryl Streep and Her Amazing Reaction Shots Were the Real US Open Winners

    ESPN screenshot

Meryl Streep is the reigning queen of fantastic reaction shots, and she was back at it again this weekend while attending the US Open men’s final.

The legendary actress — who caused a similar stir earlier this year when she updated her own meme at the Oscars — was in the crowd on Sunday, watching the tense showdown between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martín del Potro. And luckily for fans, there were plenty of cameras present to capture her roller coaster of emotions.

A bunch of images and clips (which were soon turned into GIFs — thanks, internet!) quickly made their way across social media on Sunday as fans caught on to Meryl’s presence in the stands, and her accompanying over-the-top reactions to the action unfolding on the court. Djokovic and del Potro certainly didn’t disappoint, and neither did Streep.

The actress hammed it up when she realized she was on screen, holding up her beer to salute cheering fans. But it was her facial expressions when she didn’t know anyone was looking that really stole the show, cupping her hands around her mouth to cheer (echoing her previous famous meme) and clapping her hands to the sides of her face in surprise and disbelief at an intense play. We’re betting that that last one is going to get plenty of usage online.

Bless you, Meryl, for always being so delightful, both onscreen and off. If your talent for meme production is as fruitful as your talent for accruing Oscar nominations, we’re in for an embarrassment of riches.

  • Laura Dern in Talks for Greta Gerwig’s All-Star ‘Little Women’

Laura Dern in Talks for Greta Gerwig’s All-Star ‘Little Women’

    HBO

Greta Gerwig‘s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” is shaping up to be the starriest project on the block: Laura Dern is reportedly in talks to join the writer-director’s adaptation of classic novel “Little Women.”

The film already has a murder’s row of Oscar winners and critical darlings attached or currently in negotiations to star. They include Meryl Streep (playing the family matriarch, Marmee), Emma Stone (eldest sister Meg), Saoirse Ronan (feisty aspiring author Jo), Timothee Chalamet (Laurie, the dreamy boy next door), Florence Pugh, and James Norton.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that Dern is set to join their ranks. No word yet on which character from Louisa May Alcott’s book she will be playing. She’s currently shooting season two of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” which also features Streep.

In addition to directing, Gerwig is also adapting Alcott’s work for the screenplay. The novel has inspired numerous films and TV projects over the years, including a recent Masterpiece Theater series; a 1933 feature with Katharine Hepburn as Jo; and a 1994 big screen outing starring Winona RyderKirsten DunstClaire DanesChristian Bale, and Susan Sarandon.

Based on its insane cast list alone, we think this new take may just give the beloved ’90s version a serious run for its money. Stay tuned for more intel as it becomes available.

  • Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep Serve Delicious Drama in ‘Big Little Lies’ Set Photos

Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep Serve Delicious Drama in ‘Big Little Lies’ Set Photos

    HBO

A series of photos from the “Big Little Lies” set that surfaced online this week suggest that Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep‘s characters have quite the cold relationship on the show — and it’s going to cause some delicious onscreen drama.

That was the conclusion drawn by fans after some paparazzi shots from the show’s Los Angeles shoot were shared on social media. The pictures feature Witherspoon’s character, Madeline Mackenzie, hurling an ice cream cone at the back of the head of Streep’s character, Mary Louise Wright (who is — SPOILER ALERTthe mother of Alexander Skarsgaard’s now-deceased Perry, and the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman‘s Celeste).

And if those images weren’t a tasty enough tease for fans of the acclaimed HBO series, Witherspoon herself got in on the fun, sharing some behind the scenes scoop about what happened after she lobbed those scoops at Streep.

“I am praying Reese pelts Meryl with that ice cream,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Oh Matt! No need to pray. I got her !” Witherspoon replied, confirming that her cone did indeed make contact with her fellow Oscar winner.

Legends pelting legends with frozen desserts. There’s just no topping that.

    Agreed, HBO. Agreed.

We can’t wait to watch this chilly relationship unfold on the new seas of “BLL,” which is set to debut on HBO sometime in 2019.

  • Cher and Meryl Streep Kissed at the ‘Mamma Mia 2’ Premiere and Fans Are Obsessed

    Universal

When legends share a red –er, make that blue — carpet together, there’s no telling what may happen. And fans were treated to the ultimate magic moment when Cher and Meryl Streep shared a kiss at the London premiere of “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”

The Oscar winners and longtime pals previously starred together in 1983’s “Silkwood,” and were back together again at Monday night’s premiere. Cher and Meryl were clearly delighted to be reunited, and celebrated the occasion with a playful smooch for the cameras.

Fans found the display of affection absolutely divine (and maybe not-so-secretly wished they were in the middle of this Cher-Meryl sandwich), and took to Twitter to declare their love for not only the actresses, but also the actresses’ love for each other. And naturally, the buzzy moment became an instant meme.

Most of the rest of the members of the “Mamma Mia 2” cast — which features Lily JamesPierce BrosnanColin FirthStellan SkarsgårdJulie WaltersDominic CooperAmanda Seyfried, and Christine Baranski — were also in attendance. But let’s be real: Streep and Cher may as well have been the only ones walking the carpet, for all of the attention they commanded. And really, when these two queens are involved, isn’t that the way it should be?
