  • ‘Thor’s’ Lady Sif to Return to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Showtime 2014 Emmy Eve - Arrivals
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is getting another dose of Asgardian: Actress Jaimie Alexander is set to reprise her role as Lady Sif on the ABC series.

This will mark the “Thor” actress’s second appearance on “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and according to TV Insider, things will be different for Sif this time around. The synopsis, per TV Insider:

Sif comes to Earth on an undercover mission and has a bodyslamming showdown with a foe whose superpowers are equal to her own. (Marvel is keeping the baddie’s identity hush-hush.) Footage of the epic clash, which takes place on the coast of Portugal, becomes big news on social media, prompting the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to rush to the scene to investigate. Not only do they find Sif without her lusty trademark armor, but she has also lost her short-term memory.

According to “S.H.I.E.L.D.” executive producer Jeffrey Bell, that confusion will make for interesting interactions between Sif and the rest of the series’s regulars.

“Sif has no idea who Thor is or that she serves a king, and we’re going to have fun with that,” Bell told TV Insider. “It’ll give us some much-needed humor in a season that’s been full of betrayal and death. Sif can’t even recall who she came here from Asgard to stop, but Agent Coulson [Clark Gregg] and his team will try to help her figure all that out.”

Bell added that Sif still has her childhood memories intact, and will use her knowledge of the universe at large to assist the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns from hiatus on March 3. Alexander’s appearance is slated for the following week’s episode.

  • ‘Daredevil’ Teaser: A (Quick) First Look at Netflix and Marvel’s New Series (VIDEO)

    Daredevil, Netflix
It’s not the official teaser — that’s dropping tomorrow, February 4 — but Marvel and Netflix couldn’t help but offer a short glimpse at the trailer for “Daredevil,” the streaming service’s first foray into a four-series partnership with the comic powerhouse.

The clip is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look at our hero, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind man who moonlights as the titular superhero. We see Daredevil, in a makeshift costume, slink down a darkened hallway before busting down a door and barging through.

“I’m just trying to make my city a better place,” he says in voiceover.

We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out additional details about the series, but this sneak peek should get fans excited to see more.

  • The Avengers Face Ultron in This New ‘Age of Ultron’ TV Spot

Did you miss seeing this new TV spot for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” last night? Maybe you don’t have a TV, or you got up to go to the bathroom, or you scroll through commercials on your DVR – hey, we’re not here to judge.

Anyway, there’s not a ton of new stuff happening in this spot that we haven’t seen before. We do get a better look at Iron Man’s fancy Hulkbuster suit, and there’s more Iron Man-on-Hulk action, but that’s about it.

Or is it? Over at Hitfix Harpy, Donna Dickens notes that we could be getting a glimpse of the elusive Grey Hulk. “But that bit where the Hulk kicks the cop car like Rocket Raccoon kicks grass? The warm color palette used in every other shot of the Hulkbuster fight is absent, replaced with muted blues that indicate a different sequence. So is it the new color scheme that makes Banner’s alter ego look different, or it could be that we’re seeing Grey Hulk?” The Grey Hulk is the more subdued version of the Hulk, which is not to say that the grey guy is totally chill; he’s just sort of slower to Hulk out. Take a look, and let us know what you think.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” opens May 1.

  • Chris Pratt Could Play Indiana Jones in Disney Reboot: Report

    %Slideshow-263811%
Here’s a juicy bit of scoop: Deadline is reporting that Disney wants to reboot “Indiana Jones” — and wants Chris Pratt in the lead role.

According to the site, the studio bought the rights to the franchise from Paramount in 2013, and is eager to make good on that acquisition with a reboot or remake of some sort. And who better to lead it than Disney/Marvel’s newest superstar, Pratt?

Deadline reports that “things are very early,” but Disney “has its sights set” on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star, who they “hope to build the new franchise around.” The site cautions that this is nothing but a rumor at this point, though Pratt continuing his already fruitful relationship with Disney makes plenty of sense.

Stay tuned to see if this pans out.

In the meantime, Pratt is currently starring in the seventh and final season of “Parks and Recreation” on NBC, and can be seen this summer in “Jurassic World.” He’s also rumored to be joining the cast of director Antoine Fuqua’s “Magnificent Seven” remake alongside Denzel Washington.

  • ‘The Fantastic Four’ Trailer: Be Ready for What’s Coming (VIDEO)

the fantastic four trailer 2015The long-awaited first teaser trailer for the reboot of “The Fantastic Four” is here, and it suggests a darker tone for the Marvel property than the previous film incarnations.

The teaser was very much in the style of Christopher Nolan — highly reminiscent of teasers for “Interstellar” — with an ominous voice warning, “Human beings have an immeasurable desire to discover … [But] with every new discovery there is risk,” as images flash of Reed Richards (Miles Teller) in a high-tech lab, Sue Storm (Kate Mara) working in front of a bank of computer terminals, and some kind of ship preparing to take off.

Along with Teller and Mara, there are brief glimpses of Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell displaying the superpowers they gain after some kind of experiment/space flight seems to go wrong.

From the teaser, it looks like Josh Trank’s “Fantastic Four” will sit seamlessly beside other Marvel films — at least aesthetically. The movie opens in theaters on Aug. 7.

  • Fox May Make an ‘X-Men’ TV Series — But Needs Marvel’s Blessing

Disney Acquires Marvel Comics For $4 Billion
It’s been rumored that Fox wants to turn “X-Men” into a television series, and now one network executive is speaking out about the possibility for the first time.

In an interview with TV Insider, Gary Newman revealed that Fox is indeed interested in making the mutant comic series into a TV show, and that the network is currently in negotiations to do so. There’s one major hurdle standing in Fox’s way, though: While the company owns the movie rights to the franchise, Marvel still owns the rights to the characters outright, and needs to grant Fox permission to use them again for television.

Making that matter more complicated is Marvel’s new owner, Disney, which also owns ABC and has been developing superhero-themed programming for that network (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Agent Carter”), along with Netflix (“Daredevil,” “A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage”). Marvel may not want to extend the same courtesy to a broadcast rival.

“It’s in negotiations,” Newman told TV Insider of talks with Marvel. “We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”

While TV Insider reports that there are no writers currently attached to the project, The Hollywood Reporter hints that that may not quite be the case. According to THR, onetime “Star Trek 3” writers Patrick McKay and JD Payne are co-writing the “X-Men” TV treatment, and are slated to get a “created by” credit on the series along with “24” producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto. Fox declined to comment on THR’s report.

TV Insider also wrote that if the “X-Men” series does take off, it will be a long wait before audiences will get to see it: Newman told the site that the show wouldn’t debut before the 2016-2017 season at the earliest. Stay tuned.

  • David Tennant to Play Villain in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones’

National Television Awards - Winners RoomThe cast for upcoming Netflix series “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is shaping up nicely, with David Tennant signing on to play the villain.

Marvel announced the casting Monday, revealing that Tennant would play a character called Kilgrave. “An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world,” the announcement said.

The “Doctor Who” alum joins the previously-cast Krysten Ritter, who’s playing Jessica, and Mike Colter, who’s playing Luke Cage.

Series showrunner Melissa Rosenberg praised Tennant’s talent, noting that the actor’s unique delivery would “make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave,” added Jeph Loeb, an executive producer on “Jessica” and Marvel’s Head of Television. “While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

The official series description, per Marvel: “After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.”

“Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” will debut sometime later this year on Netflix.

  • ‘Mockingjay’ Tops ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as 2014’s Highest-Grossing Film

Katniss Everdeen has outdone Peter Quill: “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” has officially surpassed “Guardians of the Galaxy” as 2014’s highest-grossing film.

The tallies are almost identical, but “Mockingjay” has come away with the slight upper hand, raking in $333.18 million at the domestic box office since its November 21 bow. That’s only incrementally better than “Guardians,” which has so far made $333.17 million in North America, but good enough for the win.

Deadline reports that this is nothing new for Katniss and co., who also bested Marvel in 2013, when “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” initially lost out to “Iron Man 3” in the box office war, before claiming victory in January. And it marks the second year in a row that a female-led flick has taken the box office crown, a big coup in diversity-challenged Hollywood.

There will be another showdown between the two companies next year, too, since Marvel has “Avengers: Age of Ultron” due out on May 1, and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” is coming on November 20. Whichever one reigns supreme, it looks like we’re in for another year of big blockbusters.

  • Will Spider-Man Be in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Movie?

Amazing Spider-ManAmongst the juicy tidibts that came out of the Sony hack was the revelation that the company had met with Marvel to discuss including Spider-Man in their cinematic universe. A deal was, unfortunately, not made then, but now comes a rumor that the two sides have finally shaken hands.

Latino Review reports that Sony has agreed to allow Spider-Man (over which it has film rights) to appear in “Avengers: Infinity War – Part I” in 2018. “We’ll see an MCU Spider-Man in Infinity Wars Part 1, as that was the next logical place to insert him after they missed the window to logically include him in [Captain America 3] Civil War,” the site claims.

They also contend that Andrew Garfield, who starred in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” would not play the part in the Marvel universe.

It’s all rumors and hearsay, and totally unsubstantiated. But if what Latino Review says is true, there will be a major reshuffling of the “Avengers” lineup by the time “Infinity War” comes out. (There are massive spoilers in their report about “Captain America: Civil War” and the next “Thor” movie.)

And what it could mean for Sony’s “Spider-Man” movies is unclear. Would Garfield star in a third film? Are they still hoping to launching Sinister Six and female-centric spinoffs?

There are still a lot of questions, but if Sony and Marvel have made a deal, it could mean exciting things for the superhero movie genre.
