    • Sony has made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘Resident Evil’ were among the big titles talked up.
    • We also got a new look at ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and ‘The Social Reckoning’.

While not exactly the first studio to present at this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas (that honor went to a collection of smaller outfits such as StudioCanal and Angel), Sony was the first of the major legacy companies to tout its wears, including a new ‘Insidious’ entry and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’

Among the other movies to get new looks? Nate Bargatze’s family comedy ‘The Breadwinner’ and a mysterious new movie called Grandgear being developed by ‘Godzilla Minus One’ director Takashi Yamazaki, and produced by J.J. Abrams.

There was also an appearance by Justin Lin, who is about to head off to New Zealand to shoot an adaptation of video game title ‘Helldivers’ starring Jason Momoa, which will be out next year.

Let’s run down the big hitters, shall we?

Comedian Nate Bargatze kicked off the presentation proper with footage from his comedy movie, which sees a suburban couple switch parenting roles when the wife (played by Mandy Moore), scores a deal on ‘Shark Tank’. Bargatze was naturally funny introducing the film, but also promised to keep selling tickets to keep the exhibitors happy.

The promotional push for the latest Spider-outing has been strangely muted given the success of ‘No Way Home’, and the CinemaCon presentation was much the same –– Tom Holland was there in video form and we got a look at a scene from the film, which the studio is describing as the most emotional and grown up of the franchise so far.

Directed by Jacob Chase, the latest ‘Insidious’ follows a young woman (played by Amelia Eve) who discovers that not only can she venture into the shadowy supernatural realm known as “the further”, she can also bring what lives there back to the real world. Yeah, that won’t lead to problems at all…

With ‘Weapons’ hitting big last year, there is naturally plenty of anticipation for Zach Cregger’s next movie. He’s been at work on a new take on video game franchise ‘Resident Evil’, and we got a quick look at it, which appears suitably atmospheric.

Despite all the delays, anticipation remains high for the third entry in the animated Spidey movie series. Early footage was shown from the movie, which finds Miles Morales desperately trying to protect his family as he’s hunted across the farthest reaches of the multiverse. It looks amazing, but we’ll still have to wait until June next year to see it.

Sony wrapped up its CinemaCon 2026 show with a bang, bringing out Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart to talk up the new entry, with the game expanding into the real world (much like the 1990s original).

A sneak peek included some typically wild footage from what the team is calling “the biggest of the franchise so far.”

    • Kathryn Hahn is in talks to be the calculating Mother Gothel.
    • Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim have landed the lead roles.

Now that ‘Tangled’ is once more a going concern for Disney on the live-action front, the cast is starting to come together.

While Scarlett Johansson was previously reported as being in talks to play Mother Gothel, the role now looks to be going to someone even more suited to it: ‘Agatha All Along’s Kathryn Hahn, who Deadline reports is in talks.

And she’s not alone: ‘Titans’ veteran Teagan Croft and ‘Zombies’ star Milo Manheim have locked in the lead roles of Rapunzel and charming rogue Flynn Rider respectively, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the original ‘Tangled’ starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a spirited young princess with magical, golden hair who escapes from her isolated tower for the first time to experience the world, embarking on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi), only to discover her true identity and face the dangerous truth about the woman called Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) who kept her captive.

The 50th film released by Disney’s feature animated arm, it had a script from Dan Fogelman, who would go on to create TV hit ‘This is Us.’

The movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences, grossed over $590 million worldwide, scored an Oscar nomination for original song “I See the Light,” and was among the films revitalizing Disney’s princess genre for a new generation.

While casting is still at a very early stage, the movie has ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Better Man’ director Michael Gracey still attached to call the shots, working from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson based on the animated version.

Croft may perhaps be best known for playing Raven in the DC series ‘Titans’, which ran from 2018 to 2023.

She also starred in the Australian movie ‘True Spirit,’ portraying Jessica Watson, the teenage sailor who attempted a solo journey to circumnavigate the globe.

Manheim, the son of actress Camryn Manheim, showed his musical chops over the course of four ‘Zombies’ movies, the popular franchise that combines the undead with snappy songs about being in love and an outsider. In addition to also starring in Paramount+ series ‘School Spirits,’ he starred as Seymour in a revival of ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’

When will the live-action ‘Tangled’ be on screens?

Disney has yet to confirm a release date for the movie, though since it appears to be gearing up for a shoot this year, a 2027 premiere seems likely.

What a difference a hit makes.

While Disney had been looking to add ‘Tangled’ to its roster of animated-to-live-action conversion movies, development on the film was paused back in April when ‘Snow White’ failed to be the fairest (or most successful) of them all at the box office.

But now, in the wake of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ making more than $1.3 billion, it is back on track, though without a formal greenlight.

And it also appears to represent a thawing of relations between Scarlett Johansson and the studio, who despite suing over earnings from ‘Black Widow’, has remained attached via a producing deal and now, via Deadline, is circling the role of Mother Gothel.

    • Disney is adding ‘Tangled’ to its animated-to-live-action conversion catalogue.
    • ‘The Greatest Showman’ director Michael Gracey is in talks to handle the movie.
    • Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is writing the script.

Having enjoyed a fair amount of success turning its animated back catalogue into live-action movies, Disney is looking to turn that cash geyser on once more.

At least, according to Deadline, which reports that the studio is now putting a live-action version of 2010’s ‘Tangled’ into development.

    33552

The original animated adventure, which adapts the classic Brothers Grimm tale about the young woman with the long flowing locks whose hair helps her escape imprisonment in a tower, is just the latest film making the move from animation to live-action (or at least live-action with some CG).

And director Michael Gracey is the man in talks to make it all happen.

    What’s the story of ‘Tangled’?

2010's 'Tangled'. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.

The movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences, grossed over $590 million worldwide, scored an Oscar nomination for original song “I See the Light,” and was among the films revitalizing Disney’s princess genre for a new generation.

Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater were behind the film’s music.

Despite its big impact, the film has yet to spur a sequel. According to producer Ray Conli, it wasn’t for want of pressure from the studio.

Here’s what Conli told Den of Geek in 2015:

“There was a desire to somehow take it into a filmic sequel. But the directors weren’t really interested in doing that. Her hair was gone! There you go!”

Still, there was ‘Tangled Ever After,’ a short that played before a 3D theatrical re-release of ‘Beauty and the Beast ‘and on the Disney Channel, and the Disney Channel animated series ‘Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.’

The new movie has seemingly been in development for a while, as Deadline’s report mentions that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who contributed to the script for ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ and wrote/directed Netflix’s ‘Do Revenge,’ wrote the most recent draft of the new ‘Tangled’s script.

Robinson is currently at work on Sony’s reboot of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’

Who could star in the new ‘Tangled’?

2010's 'Tangled'. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.
2010’s ‘Tangled’. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.

Disney has naturally not commented on the new movie, so casting is likely a ways off. But with Gracey closing in on a deal, we’d expect announcements to come soon.

While neither Moore nor Levi (he especially given his political views) are likely to return for much more than cameos, some (including Levi) have suggested ‘Dune’ and ‘A Complete Unknown’s Timothée Chalamet as a potential Flynn.

That said, he seems unlikely to tackle the job.

Fans, meanwhile, have been talking up the combo of Disney channel veteran (and current pop star) Sabrina Carpenter as Rapunzel and ‘Red White and Royal Blue’s Taylor Zakhar Perez.

We’ll have to wait and see who ends up in the key roles.

Much more important in our opinion is finding the right horse (real or CG) to play Maximus, the stubborn, sarcastic horse who steals the movie from under the main characters.

(L to R) Hugh Jackman and director Michael Gracey on the set of ‘The Greatest Showman’. Photo: 20th Century Fox.

Gracey right now is best known for his zeitgeisty directorial debut, ‘The Greatest Showman,’ one of the highest grossing live-action musicals of all time, starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, which took in more than $435 million worldwide and earned a number of major accolades, including a Grammy and a Golden Globe.

The film’s soundtrack in particular became a big sensations, with the likes of “The Greatest Show” and “This Is Me” –– co-written by ‘La La LandOscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul –– turning into crossover pop hits.

Gracey co-wrote, directed and produced ‘Better Man,’ a semi-autobiographical musical about British pop icon Robbie Williams, in which he’s portrayed as a chimpanzee through some impressive visual effects.

What other animated-to-live-action conversions does Disney have on the way?

Mufasa in Disney’s 'Mufasa: The Lion King'.

The more recent likes of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Maleficent,’ ‘Cinderella’ ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Cruella’ are notable in the annals of Disney raiding its cartoon catalogue for re-imaginations, the idea stretches further back, including 1994 take on ‘The Jungle Book,’ the two movies based on ‘101 Dalmatians’ and ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.’

They haven’t all been hits –– Robert Zemeckis’ version of ‘Pinocchio’ was a noted flop that went straight to streaming on Disney+.

Yet the blips haven’t stopped the flow of these productions. Coming next is ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ (a prequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 CG take on the tale), while in 2025 we can expect ‘Snow White’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch.’ 2026 promises ‘Moana,’ while the likes of ‘Bambi’ and ‘The Aristocats’ are in development.

When will the new ‘Tangled’ be in theaters?

With the film at such an early stage, Disney has yet to confirm the movie’s existence, let alone when it might land on screens.

With the schedule full for the next couple of years, we wouldn’t imagine this would arrive much before 2027.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Cast and Crew Tease ‘Sprawling’ Season 3 Finale, Season 4

‘This Is Us’ Cast and Crew Tease ‘Sprawling’ Season 3 Finale, Season 4

    Ron Batzdorff/NBC

As NBC tearjerker “This Is Us” approaches its season three finale, fans are no doubt desperate for some resolution to several of the season’s biggest storylines. According to the show’s cast and crew, there is indeed some closure coming — but in true “This Is Us” fashion, viewers will need to prepare themselves for some serious drama.

At a panel at Paleyfest in Hollywood this weekend, the “This Is Us” gang gathered to dish about the upcoming end of the show’s third season, as well as offer a glimpse into season four. While creator Dan Fogelman said that the new season would “expand” the world of the show and offer some “ambitious” storytelling,” first, fans have to get through this season’s finale.

Fogelman promised that that episode will offer “a lot of answers” about the ongoing drama surrounding Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) premature son; Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) strained relationship with Zoe (Melanie Liburd); and, perhaps of most interest to “This Is Us” fans, the currently rocky marriage of Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). The latter duo will get a showcase episode this Tuesday, March 26, where they hash out their issues, including their clash over Randall’s demanding new city council job in Philadelphia, and Beth’s recent decision to pursue a career teaching dance.

“Obviously there’s a tremendous amount of attention on Randall and Beth’s storyline,” Fogelman told the Paleyfest crowd. “There will be an answer there in terms of the long-term health of their relationship.”

As that plot point comes to a head, so, too, will other major events of season three.

“We have all of our storylines building to that in the last episode,” the producer said. “It’s kind of gigantic. The last five minutes of the episode are sprawling.”

Also on deck for the finale is another glimpse into the flash forward timeline, which features an older Randall and his family getting ready to visit Rebecca (Mandy Moore). As for how all of this affects the Pearsons in season four, Hartley summed it up thusly: “Everyone is not okay.”

The “This Is Us” season three finale is set for Tuesday, April 2 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.

Try not to stagger back from shock, but the “This Is Us” Season 3 premiere may hit you in the feels.

Season 3, Episode 1 is called “Ave Maria,” and it airs this coming Tuesday, September 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Randall, Kate and Kevin find themselves on new paths as they each celebrate their 38th birthday.”

Yeah, that doesn’t tell you too much.

Mandy Moore told a bit more to Entertainment Weekly. The site also shared a photo from the premiere, which shows Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) on their first official date at a carnival.

    Ron Batzdorff/NBC, via EW

Moore talked a lot about what’s ahead in the new season, but she raised our eyebrows during this Q&A segment:

What’s the moment from the episodes that you’ve already shot this season that you can’t wait for audiences to see?
There’s something that doesn’t involve my character that’s a bit of a twist in the first episode that people are going to be like, “Whaaa…?”

    Is it a good, “Whaaa…?” or a bad, “Whaaa…?”
It’s a bad “Whaaa…?” It’s not heartwarming. People are going to be like, “Whaaa…? Why? How? What?” [Laughs.] At least I was, and I knew that it was coming, but still, when you read it, you’re like, “No. Whaaa…?” So that’s pretty interesting. I think Dan [Fogelman] has talked a lot about figuring out who [Randall] is talking about. I think that every episode is offering a more fully realized picture of who that is. It’s not being dragged for the sake of being cheeky. I think it’s just really brilliant storytelling and, Dan’s old favorite way of describing the show is the mixed up videotapes of home videos. This is exactly that, but we’re leaning a little bit into the future aspect of it.

It’s not clear if the “Whaaa…?” moment is directly connected to Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and the Season 2 flash forward scene or if that was just another example of something she can’t wait for audiences to see.

We’ll find out when “This Is Us” starts this Tuesday. Read her full Q&A for more.

We know Season 3 will bring back Deja full time, and also film scenes in Vietnam to tell that part of Jack’s past. Jack’s brother Nicky has also been cast.

    Stack up on tissues now!

  • The Pearsons Get Serious in ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Family Portraits

The Pearsons Get Serious in ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Family Portraits

    Ron Batzdorff/NBC

We’re only a few weeks away from the season three premiere of NBC tearjerker “This Is Us,” and to celebrate, the Pearson clan commissioned some very special family portraits.

The gorgeous multi-generational snaps, taken by legendary photographer Annie Liebovitz, feature the characters in both past and present form, including the younger versions of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore), and the present-day Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), and Toby (Chris Sullivan).

Additional images snapped by Leibovitz were debuted simultaneously by E! News and “Today,” and feature each character separately, as well as another cozy family photo. And while everyone looks absolutely wonderful in each image, we can’t help but notice that all of the photos share a serious, almost somber tone, suggesting that there’s plenty of drama awaiting viewers this season. (Oddly, only Beth appears to be on the cusp of smiling in any of the pictures, though maybe that’s because Watson knows that her character won’t be dying.)

We already know that the show is set to explore more of Jack’s mysterious time in Vietnam, as well as fill in more background on Beth and Toby (including the latter’s struggle with depression). Creator and executive producer Dan Fogelman has promised that season three will be the show’s most ambitious, and will deal out “some wallops.” As if we’d expect anything less from the series that killed off America’s most perfect dad with a kitchen appliance.

“This Is Us” returns to NBC on September 25.

  • Watch the Insanely Star-Studded Trailer for ‘Drunk History’ Season 5

Season five of Comedy Central’s hilarious, booze-soaked show “Drunk History” is almost here, and to celebrate, the cable network has finally dropped the first trailer for the star-studded batch of new episodes.

As has become tradition for the series — which features famous folks getting sloshed and recounting historical tales, which are then acted out word for slurred, drunken word by other celebs — season five features an insanely stacked cast. The season premiere alone features some especially bold names, as revealed in this synopsis:

During the premiere episode Tiffany Haddish narrates museum curator Rose Valland’s (Busy Philipps) risky quest to save Europe’s masterpieces from the Nazis; Paget Brewster slurs her way through the story of Deborah Sampson (Evan Rachel Wood), the first woman to take a bullet for America during the Revolutionary War; and Amber Ruffin recalls the bravery of “The Angel of the Battlefield,” Clara Barton (Mandy Moore), who founded the American Red Cross with the help of surgeon James Dunn (Alexander Skarsgård) and Abraham Lincoln (Jack McBrayer).

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s a rundown of the other guest stars who will be playing historical folks:

Vanessa Bayer, Jillian Bell, Jack Black, Josh Charles, Rob Corddry, Kat Dennings, Kirsten Dunst, Eric Edelstein, Donald Faison, Kevin Farley, Rich Fulcher, Kimiko Glenn, Tony Hale, Colin Hanks, David Harbour, Brian Tyree Henry, John Michael Higgins, Vanessa Hudgens, O’Shea Jackson Jr., David Koechner, Johnny Knoxville, Jane Krakowski, Abbi Jacobson, Daryl Johnson, Alex Karpovsky, Taran Killam, Justin Long, Method Man, Jason Mantzoukas, Tatiana Maslany, Jayma Mays, Joel McHale, Sheaun McKinney, Jerry O’Connell, Keir O’Donnell, Bob Odenkirk, Randall Park, Jesse Plemons, Lauren Potter, Richard Riehle, Jason Ritter, Seth Rogen, Angus Sampson, Paul Scheer, Martin Starr, Ali Stroker, Raven Symoné, Jorma Taccone, Amber Tamblyn, Allison Tolman, Shannon Woodward, Jimmy O. Yang, and Weird Al Yankovic.

And here’s who will be doing the narrating — a.k.a., actually getting drunk — this season:

Suzi Barrett, Steve Berg, Rachel Bloom, Shaun Diston, Rich Fulcher, Jon Gabrus, Mark Gagliardi, Solomon Georgio, Georgia Hardstark, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Daryl Johnson, Doug Jones, Lyric Lewis, Gabe Liedman, John Lutz, Tess Lynch, Allan McLeod, Kyle Mooney, Katie Nolan, Claudia O’Doherty, Randall Park, Jennie Pierson, Questlove, Alison Rich, Chris Romano, JD Ryznar, Carl Tart, Greg Tuculescu, Duncan Trussell, Brendon Walsh, Crissle West, Mae Whitman, and Jimmy O. Yang.

Like we said before: It’s a pretty stacked ensemble. We can’t wait to see everyone in action (and maybe enjoy a cocktail or two ourselves as we watch along).

Season five of “Drunk History” premieres on Comedy Central on January 23, 2018, and will air seven episodes before taking a brief hiatus. The remaining six episodes of the season will debut sometime later in 2018.
