After making its first trip to CinemaCon last year, Amazon MGM Studios has certainly been enjoying a good year at the box office so far, largely thanks to the huge success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ (which, as announced at the panel, just crossed $525 million at the global box office, cementing it as the company’s biggest movie to date, and will see its theatrical window extended, Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!).

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling, the studio unveiled new looks at this year’s crop of movies and beyond including ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’. But if you were expecting a surprise announcement about casting for the new James Bond movie, there was none –– but VP of Film Courtenay Valenti did promise it’ll be worthy of the venerable franchise’s legacy.
First out of the gate (even though it isn’t out until next March) was newly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan‘s remake of the 1968 caper movie –– previously re-imagined in 1999, which the actor is directing and starring in.
After a look at some fun footage, Jordan himself took the stage to talk up the fact that Jon Batiste is crafting the music for the movie. He also brought out co-star Adria Arjona, complimenting her “intensity, wit, and fire” while calling her “an incredible scene partner.” Their cat-and-mouse relationship (as art thief and the insurance investigator tracking him down) is at the core of the movie.
Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, plays the antagonist, the person that Jordan’s Crown targets. Jordan says he made the movie for big screens.

Hoping for another big hit, Amazon MGM is putting a lot of weight behind ‘Masters of the Universe’, which adapts the 1980s toy line and cartoon series (and was already focus of a notoriously unsuccessful 1987 movie).
Stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and director Travis Knight took the stage to introduce a new look at the film. Galitzine, of course, was hefting He-Man’s classic power sword, which is surely some sort of safety violation.

Some fresh footage from the movie –– which Knight and co. described as tackling how someone is challenged to step up beyond what they think they can do –– was screened after Galitzine had the audience lift the fake swords they received as he recited He-Man’s classic transformation line…
The new scene shows Galitzine’s Prince Adam and Mendes’ Teena reuniting on Earth before they travel to Eternia to battle the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), which in turn leads into the new trailer.
Another jump ahead in time for a quick look at footage from Jason Statham action sequel ‘The Beekeeper 2’. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from The Stath, and should keep fans happy. Statham himself appeared via video to exclaim, “some people say less is more. I say more is more.”
The new movie will see the Beekeeper society looking to overthrow the US government. At this point in time, the jokes write themselves…
Back to 2026’s schedule, and the quirky mystery drama about a herd of sheep who must solve the murder of their beloved shepherd (Hugh Jackman).
Jackman himself arrived on stage (along with co-stars Nicholas Braun, and a returning Galitzine) to tout the film, which also boasts a considerable cast in both live-action (Emma Thompson) and voice (too many to list) form. It’s described as “a warm deeply human story about finding your place in the world.” And we got an extended look at the movie.
Gareth Evans (‘The Raid’) returns with a new action movie, this one starring Sope Dirisu in the story of Colt, a Vietnam veteran turned contract killer, goes on the run after assassinating a gangland boss.

With confetti and chaos, the new movie from director David Leitch launched into a first look at a team of social media types who make videos about, well, how to rob banks.
Leitch came on stage with Pete Davidson, and Davidson revealed that this group of robbers livestreams their crimes and robberies. “They’re putting an end to greed and corruption one heist, and one video, at a time,” he said, before Rhenzy Feliz and Anna Sawai were confirmed to be the other two robbers. Leitch wanted to capture the energy of a manic YouTube video, before a video message from the rest of the cast played.

More action, this time a visceral thriller starring Mahershala Ali and following a hitman struggling to balance his job with his faith & fatherhood. Bassam Tariq directs.
Ali took the stage to enthuse about how the movie checked every box for him, and he introduced some intense footage.

The much-anticipated ‘Spaceballs’ sequel was introduced by originator Mel Brooks (via video), with cast members Bill Pullman, Josh Gad, Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and to great response, Rick Moranis actually present to introduce a first look at the movie, which is as funny as you might hope for. Let’s just say the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy is heavily targeted for spoofing.

It might still be busy shooting, but the re-imagining of the 1980s action movie is one of the bigger titles on the horizon for the studio.
With Henry Cavill starring as the immortal warrior who must battle others of his kind, it promises plenty of set pieces.
Cavill and director Chad Stahelski (‘John Wick’) are halfway through filming, but the former took time out to appear via video and offer some early footage.
Available on digital beginning August 5th, before arriving on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 9th is the box office hit ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, which is the seventh movie in the series and begins a whole new chapter for the beloved franchise.
Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Gareth Edwards from Thailand about the ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’s digital and home entertainment release. Edwards discussed his love for the original movie, taking the franchise in a new direction, the alternate opening, the deleted scenes and why they were cut, and designing the look of the dinosaurs and other creatures for the film.

Moviefone: To begin with, were you a fan of the ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Jurassic World’ movies before making this film, and what does it mean to you personally to be leading this new chapter of the franchise?
Gareth Edwards: I think on the fan front, so basically New Year’s Eve 2024, which is when I was offered the gig, my girlfriend was like, “What do you want to do?” I said, “I don’t really want to go out. Let’s just go down the road. We live near Universal Studios.” I was like, “Let’s just go on the ‘Jurassic World’ ride, and that’s how we’ll celebrate New Year’s Eve.” So, I took a picture of myself and I’m friends with Colin Trevorrow who did the ‘Jurassic World’ movies, and I sent it to them as sort of an embarrassing, like this is how rock and roll I am, that we’re going on a ‘Jurassic World’ theme park ride for our New Year’s Eve. But I didn’t expect in my wildest dreams that two months later, I was going to be in a room with Steven Spielberg pitching him my take on that screenplay. So, it’s been a surreal, crazy journey, to be honest with you.

MF: I understand there will be an alternate opening as well as deleted scenes available with the digital release. Can you talk about what the alternate opening is, as well as the deleted scenes and why they didn’t make the final theatrical cut?
GE: So, there’s an alternative opening. ‘Jurassic Park’ basically has a lot of strong themes within it, and one of them is man versus nature, obviously. So, I started the movie with basically the rainforest getting destroyed a little bit, by these giant machines were building this lab where the movie opens. It just took a little too long visually to get there in time. So, as we were just trying to tighten the movie, it was just one of the things that came out. But I always missed it not being in the film. So, it doesn’t have all finished VFX, but you really see all the temporary previs of that. Then there’s two deleted scenes, one that people might recognize who saw the trailer, which is a velociraptor scene that got removed. The reason for that was because if you imagined it in the actual film, it was like a double beat moment where you have this reveal of raptors in the beginning of the third act in the film at night, and then suddenly the Mutadons appear, and it just felt like a hat on a hat a little bit. So, we’re going to be putting that on the digital extras. Then also my favorite scene that got cut out that I was just sad about and wanted it to be in the movie, but it basically just stopped the momentum at one point. But it’s a scene, without getting into too much information, it’s basically when Scarlett sees a payphone and tries to make a call and it all goes a bit wrong from there.

MF: Finally, can you talk about designing the look of the dinosaurs and the new mutated creatures?
GE: Well, when I started the film, I walked into this empty office and they go, “Okay, your first meeting is in a few days with Mattel, the toy company.” I was like, “Okay, why?” They said, “Well, they want to see all the designs for the dinosaurs. They need a year to build the factories to make the toys.” I’m like, “We don’t have any designs.” So basically, I put out this bat signal to all my favorite concept artists that I’d worked with that could do creature designs. We did this massive Zoom session where I just said everything I could possibly think of. Dozens and dozens of the top people in the world just went away that night and within about two or three days we had about 300 designs and it was fast to nail the look of the dinosaurs. The only problem ones were the mutant dinosaurs because obviously the canvas is so large. There was one called the D-Rex, which was really, I felt like I could see it in my peripheral vision if there was a crime and you were trying to explain it to the police. I felt like I got a good look at that one. The one I didn’t quite see was the Mutadon, which is the smaller, more raptor-like mutant dinosaur. There are no toys of those for a reason because we took nine months to figure that one out. So sorry, kids, maybe at Christmas, if you pester your mom and Mattel, you might get one.

Kevin Feige has given a wide-ranging interview about the state of Marvel.
He touched on the delays with ‘Blade’.
He also admitted that recent disappointments necessitated a change in thinking.
With the studio’s latest giant release –– and one of its biggest gambles in years on the way via ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, Marvel boss Kevin Feige took the opportunity to address some of the topics that have been floating around, including recent underperforming movies and TV series under the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his own future (spoiler alert: he aims to stick around!) and more.

Among the other subjects? The long-gestating and troubled development of a new ‘Blade’ movie, and his team’s new seven-year plan for new movies and shows and whether we’ll see actors from end credits cameos in the future.

Blade, the Daywalking half-human-half-vampire character most famously played by Wesley Snipes, was announced for a reboot back at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, it has been a drawn-out log of multiple script drafts, directors coming and going, different time periods considered and, all through it, Oscar winner Mahershala Ali staying attached to the lead role.
Here’s what Feige had to say about it:
“You can start and have a good script and make it a great script through production, but we didn’t feel confident we could do that on ‘Blade’. We didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us. we landed on modern day and that’s what we’re focusing on. We didn’t want to put a leather outfit on Mahershala and have him start killing vampires.”
Feige also joked that Ryan Coogler –– who is developing a third ‘Black Panther’ outing for the company –– added to the delay by utilizing some of the costumes the company had created for a Prohibition-era take on the story in his own recent hit, ‘Sinners’.
The executive also touched on complaints that the sheer output and deepened connectivity between the Disney+ MCU series and the big screen outings were feeling like homework and turning off viewers who hadn’t seen them, which in turn hurt the box office revenues of ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’:
“Some of them were still feeling the residual effects of that notion of, ‘I guess I had to have seen these other shows to understand who this is,’ I think if you actually saw the movie, that wouldn’t be the case, and we make the movie so that’s not the case. But I think we still have to make sure the audience understands that.”
According to Feige, the company has a seven-year plan to take it up to 2032, admitting that while he most much of it will stay on track, projects are on magnets on a board in a conference room so they can move around as necessary.
His answer wasn’t entirely convincing, but he took a stab at explaining the change:
“We had started even before what had happened to the actor happened, we had started to realize that Kang wasn’t big enough, wasn’t Thanos, and that there was only one character that could be that, because he was that in the comics for decades and decades. Because of the Fox acquisition, we finally had it, and it was Dr. Doom. So we had started talking about Dr. Doom even before we officially pivoted from Kang. And in fact, I had started talking with Robert [Downey Jr.] about this audacious idea before ‘Ant-Man 3’ even came out. It was a long plan that we had, to take one of our greatest characters and utilize one of our greatest actors.”
What’s next for Marvel?
As mentioned, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ lands in theaters on Friday.

Opening in theaters on July 2nd is ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, the latest in the long-running dinosaur franchise that originated with 1993 classic ‘Jurassic Park’.

The latest entry in the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise –– all birthed, of course, from the DNA of Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel ‘Jurassic Park’ and the all-time classic movie Steven Spielberg made from it –– arrives with plenty of promise.
You have director Gareth Edwards, who has shown an ability to bring humanity to big-scale movies (even if his box office results don’t always align), and original ‘Park’ screenwriter David Koepp back unleashing the dino chaos from the page.
Loaded with references to how the world at large is generally over reconstituted dinosaurs coexisting (and that the creatures themselves are dying in our modern climate), it’s a meta meditation on how the movie franchise itself has evolved (not to mention the various attempts to bring giant creatures to the screen in other monsterverses) and every new effort needs to up the wow factor.

If you weren’t aware that David Koepp wrote the script for ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, the initial chunk of the screenplay might make you wonder whether it was someone else who had fed Koepp’s previous work into Chat GPT and asked it to replicate that, while throwing in some truly egregious movie cliches.
Following a relatively effective opening sequence which (briefly) introduces the new big bad dinosaur, we’re treated to expository title cards explaining how the public’s interest in the giant beasties has waned, and how they’re slowly dying out aside from in certain areas near the equator, which have become strict quarantine areas.
Then, the same information is repeated in a news broadcast, and at least one of the main characters says something similar. You’re beaten over the head with the details in such an inorganic fashion that you wonder if it was added in as studio executives panicked that we as an audience might not get it.

Likewise, the vast majority of the characters beyond a couple of leading figures are less one-note, more half-note, and at least two might as well have “dinosaur snack” written on their foreheads in place of personalities. Yes, that’s par for the course in a ‘Jurassic’ outing, but it’s all so poorly laid out here.
Gareth Edwards knows his way around an action sequence, and he’s certainly shot some lush locations here, bringing agreeably crunchy reality to moments. Some of the set pieces, such as an early Mosasaur encounter and one with giant flying Quetzalcoatlus creatures are well-realized, as is the amusing initial appearance of a toothy franchise stalwart.
But some moments are so clearly and painfully ripped off from the original ‘Jurassic Park’ you can almost hear that movie calling this one to demand its toys back. The initial glimpse of the Titanosaurus echoes the Brachiosaurus reveal from the first film, while the human characters trying to evade becoming dino food in a convenience store is essentially that movie’s raptor kitchen scene. In this case, Easter eggs feel like less like fan service and more a lack of original thinking.
Cast and Performances

Scarlett Johansson’s “security and extraction expert” Zora Bennett is at least a more interesting character than some of the ‘World’ movies’ equivalents, and she certainly brings an entertainingly glib style to her initial scenes. But even Johansson can’t rescue a character burdened by first-draft personal pain, and she’s ultimately less successful than she might have been.
Rupert Friend is Martin Krebs, who represents the company looking to profit from the medical material that the team has been sent to retrieve. Friend does what he can with the role, but he’s mostly just a hissable antagonist from word one.
Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist expert Dr. Henry Loomis, recruited to help on the mission, who blossoms into a more active character in the Jeff Goldblum mold. Still, as with everyone else, he’s limited by the script.

Likewise Mahershala Ali, a man with two Oscars on his mantle at home, who puts all he can into ship captain and all-round fixer Duncan Kincaid. He has some good moments, but the character is lost among a wash of others.
Prime among them is ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, playing Reuben Delgado, a father to two daughters who is sailing with them near the dangerous waters, and whose boat is attacked by Mosasaurs. Garcia-Rulfo is typically good in the role, but even he’s saddled with cliché and convenience, such as one of his kids bringing an annoying, lazy boyfriend along on the trip and an injured leg from the early dino attack that mysteriously heals itself later in the movie.

While some sequences and Edwards’ commitment to tactile, real-world locations and some practical effects among the digital soup offer minor pleasures, the hulking weight of a cliché-ridden script and dino action that doesn’t so much as reference what’s gone before but rips it off wholesale, the new ‘Jurassic’ entry is miss.
This ‘Rebirth’ turns out to be largely a ‘saur disappointment.

‘Wicked: For Good’, ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ and more were showcased at Universal’s CinemaCon show.
There was news of sequels to the live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘The Bad Guys.’
The likes of Jon M. Chu and Scarlett Johansson were on stage to support their movies.
Universal’s 2024 was successful partly thanks to Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation ‘Wicked,’ and with follow-up ‘Wicked: For Good’ on the way this year, some of the studio’s focus was always going to be on the movie –– which features two new songs not found in the stage source material.
Beyond that, we were expecting peeks at movies from the studio’s various arms and partners at this year’s CinemaCon presentation, including horror home Blumhouse and DreamWorks Animation, which continues to push the likes of the ongoing ‘Shrek’ franchise and others.
And not forgetting dinosaurs: another jewel in Universal’s crown in the ‘Jurassic Park’/‘Jurassic World’ movies, and with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ headed to theaters this summer, we’d have been shocked to not see something fresh from that.

Here’s what happened at the studio’s show and tell…
Universal’s big display kicked off sonically, with the company’s President of music and publishing Mike Knobloch introducing Rickey Minor and an all-star orchestra playing a collection of tunes from the studio’s back catalogue –– ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Fast & Furious,’ ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Jaws’ and even the likes of DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Shrek’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ with clips from the movies on screens.
And, naturally, last year’s huge smash was among them, with ‘Wicked’ fully represented.
Universal chairman Donna Langley arrived on stage to celebrate the fact that the studio has released more theatrical movies since the pandemic than any other. She bypassed the idea that shrinking theatrical windows were to blame for audiences skipping cinemas.
Pete Levinson, the chairman of Universal distribution took over to essentially praise the company for its $3 billion in grosses last year. And to remind us all that ‘Wicked: For Good’ is on the way in November.

Noted dino fan Johansson related how she’s tried to get cast in all three previous ‘Jurassic World’ movies without success, eventually collaring Steven Spielberg to plead her case.
Edwards joked she was probably too expensive for the films –– which didn’t seem to sit well with Scarlet (probably all in good fun?)
The director also recalled watching the original ‘Jurassic Park’ as a kid (10 times in a day!) and how much of an honor it is direct this talented cast in a ‘Jurassic’ movie. He dropped mention that Mahershala is an Oscar winner, to which Ali comically corrected him that he has two!

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ filmed in Thailand, with Johansson recalling many “pinch me’ moments on set and on location.
The trio introduced some fresh footage from the movie –– some of it unfinished. Mahershala said he’d seen it, to which Scarlet joked she was supposed to see everything first per her contract.
As for the footage, it largely tracked what we saw in the first trailer, with Johansson’s specialist leading a team to an abandoned ‘Jurassic Park’ staging island to retrieve genetic material to source lifegiving medical cures. A new hybrid dino we’ve yet to meet

Following their short before ‘Dog Man,’ the ‘Bad Guys’ crew will be properly back on our screen later this year.

The live-action/CG take on the tale (which screened earlier in the day at the event to generally great acclaim) had stars Gerard Butler and Nico Parker on stage alongside director Dean DeBlois to talk it up.
They also announced that a sequel has already been greenlit, and that that one will fly into theaters on June 11th, 2027.
Butler was also given the chance to set the orchestra playing some of John Powell’s recognizable score.

The sequel to the 2021 Bob Odenkirk-starring action movie showcased its first trailer, full of more bone-crunching action, with Sharon stone joining the cast. The story this time finds Hutch Parker (Odenkirk) taking the family on vacation, only to run afoul of Stone’s criminal organization. Cue vengeance!
The movie hits cinemas on August 15th.

Next, it was the turn of Focus Features…
Focus chairman Peter Kujawski took the stage to hype his studio arm’s upcoming titles and say that every film by the company is made for theatrical.

The orchestra struck up music of the video game adaptation, which heralded one of the animatronic characters (well, a suit based on them) striding on stage.
After some confusion as to how to remove the head, it turned out to be company boss Jason Blum, who joked he so loves to save money that he was in the costumes the whole time for the original movie.
The original ‘Freddy’s is Blumhouse’s biggest hit of all time, so of course the sequel is already in the works. Blum also apologized for the decision to make that movie day and date on Peacock, so this follow-up will be cinemas only upon release.
And that release? December 5th.

Blum also cued up a teaser, which sees the return of Josh Hutcherson’s Mike and more animatronic chaos.

Not done with the costume theatrics, Blum arrived back on stage in a Grabber mask to offer that the sequel to Scott Derrickson’s 2021 kidnap horror thriller will be in theaters on October 17th.
Actor Madeleine McGraw, who returns for the new movie (and is CinemaCon 2025 Rising Star of the Year), joined Blum on stage to talk about the movie, which is Derrickson’s first-ever sequel.
We were treated to a first look trailer for the new movie. The footage finds the two kids (played by McGraw and Mason Thames) dealing with the repercussions of the first movie. Ethan Hawke’s Grabber is back –– even though he died –– but we only hear his voice in the trailer.

Atomic Monster boss James Wan –– whose company has formed a creative partnership with Blumhouse –– came on stage to talk up ‘Soulm8te,’ which if it sounds like a more grown up take on ‘M3GAN’ (or really, ‘Companion,’ with its story of a female robo-partner who turns out to be an issue), that’s because it’s set in the same universe as the devious doll.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ will open in theaters on April 7, 2023.
Jim Orr, the studio’s president of theatrical distribution, came on stage to discuss even further in the future. To coin a phrase, more sequels!
He confirmed the likes of ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie 2′ (April 2026), ‘Minions 3’ (July 2026) and ‘Shrek 5‘ (yes, featuring Zendaya in a voice role, arriving Christmas 2026).
But there are originals too, including Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ (July 2026) and a certain Mr. Steven Spielberg’s still-to-be-titled new event movie, which will arrive in June 2026.

They were joined by producer Marc Platt and director Jon M. Chu, who joked that this is the third year his movie(s) have closed out a Universal CinemaCon presentation.

Getting serious to discuss how the new movie follows the ramifications of the young women’s choices from the original.
We got a first look at the movie via an extended trailer, which finds Glinda and Elphaba meeting again after some time has passed since the end of ‘Wicked.’
Elphaba uses her powers to write, The Wizard of Oz Lies!” in the sky, while we get our first clear look at Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

While ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022 seemed to signal the end for the franchise that was spawned way back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park,’ turns out it was less of an extinction-level event and more of a brief pause between eras.
Because, far from letting a cash dinosaur just wither into nothingness, Universal began making plans for another movie featuring giant beasties and the humans who want to help, hunt or otherwise avoid being snack food last year.

Marvel is hoping to have the movie out next year.
And so the wheel turns on ‘Blade’. Possibly the most troubled of Marvel’s movies in development, it has been a nightmare for the studio, losing writers, cast and directors as it stumbles through the process.
Today brings yet another issue, as, according to The Wrap, Yann Demange becomes the latest director to depart the film, which –– at least for now –– still boasts ‘Green Book’s Mahershala Ali as its star.

What’s the story of ‘Blade’?

Originally crafted by Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman as a human who was immune to vampire bites, he was later changed to Eric Cross Brooks, whose mother is murdered by the bloodsucker Deacon Frost as she gives birth. The attack passes on vampire enzymes to her child, who becomes a Dhampir – a mix of both human and vampire.
Gifted with speed, strength, and the ability to walk in the daylight (hence his other name, the Daywalker), his mission is to hunt down and destroy vampires. In his time, he’s crossed paths with many notable Marvel characters in the comics, including Spider-Man and the Avengers. He’s also battled living vampire Morbius, who had his own movie out in 2022, starring Jared Leto.
Yet Blade is probably most famous for the trilogy of movies released by New Line in 1998, 2002 and 2004, starring Wesley Snipes as the gruff, sword-swinging character.
The MCU version’s story is still so far a mystery: whether it’ll deal with Blade’s origins is unknown for now, but we can expect plenty of vampire-killing action.
What has happened with ‘Blade’ so far?

The movie was launched on the public consciousness with much excitement: Ali was announced as the star as a surprise at the end of Marvel’s 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel.
Roughly two years later, ‘Mogul Mowgli’ director Bassam Tariq was hired to make the movie and with Stacy Osei-Kuffour on board to write the script, the movie was headed towards a shoot planned for late in 2022 and a November 3rd, 2023, release date.
That, obviously, did not happen. Multiple reports of script issues led to changes. Marvel veteran writer Eric Pearson, who most recently worked on ‘Fantastic Four’ is currently looking to salvage the ‘Blade’ script. Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto and Michael Green wrote previous drafts.
With Marvel’s new commitment to quality over quantity (only one movie from the company will be released this year –– ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, next month) the delay is likely more a sign of it trying to get ‘Blade’ right as opposed to rushing it into theaters.
‘Blade’ is a movie that Disney and Marvel have dated more than once, only for the film’s to require a shift. Currently, the release is set for November 7th, 2025, though the latest director departure may well scupper those plans.

It might seem right now that every casting news story is either about Rian Johnson’s new ‘Knives Out’ movie or the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong to think that.
Perhaps the biggest question on our minds is what this means for Marvel’s ‘Blade’, to which Ali has been attached to star for a couple of years now, but given all the delays on the vampire story, we figure he’s filling time while he waits for it to be ready.
And what better way to wait than hanging out with some dinosaurs?

What’s the story of the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie?
Universal is mostly keeping the details of the new movie trapped behind electric fences and concrete barriers for now. What can we predict? Big-toothed beasts causing trouble for the humans that foolishly interact with them.
A bigger question, though, is which humans… It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.
From the sounds of it, this new movie would take the franchise in a fresh new direction, so we’re also not predicting (for now) the return of ‘Jurassic Park’ trio Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Jeff Goldblum’s chaotician Malcolm.
Who else might be in the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie?
Ali might be in talks, but certainly seems to be close to locked in. Unlike Dev Patel and Colman Domingo, who have both appeared on rumor sites connected with the movie. Domingo was mentioned as the potential human antagonist of the new ‘Jurassic’ outing, but we could certainly see Ali taking that role.
With production now so close, we’ll have to wait and see if either of them actually materializes as cast members.
Gareth Edwards, who last made ‘The Creator’, was picked to direct after ‘The Fall Guy’s David Leitch was briefly in talks only to step away over a perceived lack of creative control and the fast turnaround planned for this one (see the release date details below).
David Koepp, who wrote both the 1993 classic ‘Jurassic Park’ (directed by Steven Spielberg) and its 1997 sequel, ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (also directed by Spielberg, to less critical praise, but still healthy box office), crafted the new movie’s screenplay.
Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far. And of course, Spielberg will weigh in since he helped birth the franchise.
When will the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie be in theaters?
Universal has already set a July 2nd, 2025, release slot for the new movie, which means it’ll have to show velociraptor speed to get finished in time.

Opening in select theaters on November 22nd before premiering December 8th on Netflix, ‘Leave the World Behind’ represents ‘Euphoria’ creator Sam Esmail putting his own stamp on the sort of the mystery box thriller that M. Night Shyamalan has been cranking out for years.
Featuring a starry lead cast that includes Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and, in a small but impactful role, Kevin Bacon, the movie cranks up the tension as it throws ever more problems at the main characters, causing them to grow increasingly paranoid, desperate and swear like sailors (or the cast of ‘Succession‘).
Does ‘Leave the World Behind’ Prepare You for the Worst, or the Best?

Starting in unexpected fashion –– with Julia Roberts’ stressed ad exec proclaiming that she has rented an isolated luxury house outside of New York to spirit her family away on an impromptu vacation because she “f*****g hates people”. Esmail’s latest film starts to ratchet the tension slowly –– of course cell service might be spotty in a place like the woody spot that Amanda picks to stay. The story pushes ‘Leave the World Behind’ in directions that are both understandable and, in a few places, ridiculous, reaching for a dark seam of comedy it can’t quite make work, which somewhat lessens the impact.
Clearly Netflix has stumped up for a decent budget on this one (witness an early scene where an oil tanker runs aground at the beach where Amanda and co. have been sunning themselves, or a plane crash later on), but in some ways it could function as a play, the main characters spending most of their time in the spacious, luxurious main house spitting out truths about suspicion in particular and the world in general.

Esmail is known for his slightly stylized dialogue (no one accuses ‘Euphoria’, for all of its searing portrait of teen life, of being completely naturalistic), and here he’s free to let loose, even though he’s adapting the novel by Rumaan Alam.
As mentioned above, the script can seriously start to sound, well scripted. Though Roberts and Ali’s characters in particular are accomplished with backgrounds in reading people (she works with advertising clients, he manages money for wealthy types), which offers some extra leeway, but when almost everyone has a hyper-literate way of talking, it verges into unbelievability.
How many 13-year-old daughters (Rose, played by Farrah Mackenzie), for example, are bingeing ‘The West Wing’ enough to remember a particular quote that lends itself to the situation? And given that Esmail’s current big job airs on HBO and streams on Max, you wonder at raised eyebrows from Netflix at endless references to a competing company’s series.
Which bring us to the ‘Friends’ thing. Rose is obsessed with the sitcom about the Manhattan pals and is desperate to find out how the show’s final season ends; no easy feat in a world where phones, the internet and TV aren’t working. It’s resolved in a way that is likely to divide audiences, though we found it somewhat laughable, and not perhaps in the way Esmail intended.
The look of the movie is part Hitchcockian, part David Fincher in his ‘Fight Club’/’Panic Room’ era. You’ll wonder how many times Esmail and his team can send the camera flowing through holes in windows or rise up through rooves, and the answer is: many. He’s looking to keep you off-kilter (the frame goes that way from time to time), but at times it’s more likely to make you roll your eyes rather than keep them glued to the screen.

If you hire Julia Roberts, you know you’re going to get good work –– Esmail, in fact, has worked with her before on Amazon’s ‘Homecoming’ series. She’s more than up to the challenge of playing Amanda, who is by turns paranoid and flinty.
You’ll absolutely buy her increasing distrust of everyone around her, and the slight thawing that happens later on.
Ali is right there on her level, his G.H. initially somewhat mysterious (though the screenplay does rather bend over backwards to keep him that way in his initial moments, since he really doesn’t bother to immediately explain why he’s at the house –– and that he’s the owner. But in Ali’s hands, it’s still a convincing, well-rounded performance.
Hawke has less to do, his initially easy-breeze Clay curdling into desperation as more and more problems present themselves, and he has a great moment between Ali and Kevin Bacon on the porch of a house.
Oh yes –– Bacon. He makes a meal of the smaller role of Danny, having him believably walk the line of crazed prepper and sense-talking human.
Myha’la, keeps Ruth sensibly snarky and mistrusting given the situation. It’s perhaps not surprising to learn that she auditioned for the role of Rue in ‘Euphoria’ that went to Zendaya, and that Esmail kept her in mind.

‘Leave the World Behind’ can at times feel like a knock-off Shyamalan or Esmail’s attempt to crossbreed his ‘Euphoria’ style with ‘The Twilight Zone’. There are chunks that don’t really work (a recurring motif with deer is overegged and suffers from occasionally less-than-convincing VFX) but on the whole, it’s an effectively creepy and paranoia-inducing movie.
Just don’t blame us if you start stocking up on water and nonperishable food after watching it.

What’s the story of ‘Leave the World Behind’?
Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay’s (Ethan Hawke) aspirational vacation with their teenage children is interrupted by the arrival of a middle aged couple who own the holiday home and who have fled an unprecedented blackout in the city.
When the internet, television and radio stop working, as does the landline, they have no way of finding out what is happening. As strange sonic booms shatter the peace of the countryside, and animals start to migrate in strange ways, the physical and mental health of the families –– because the renters are joined by G. H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold), spooked by the unfolding chaos –– begins to disintegrate.
The renters are upscale and White; the owners are upscale and Black. The issues of race clash and become distractions to the more alarming things are happening all around them.
Who else is in ‘Leave the World Behind’?
The cast for the thriller also includes Farrah Mackenzie as Clay and Amanda’s daughter Rose, Charlie Evans as son Archie, and Kevin Bacon as G.H.’s neighbor/contractor/doomsday prepper Danny.

The hits keep coming for Marvel –– and in this case, it’s not a success like the box office launch of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. The company has had a real struggle getting its planned ‘Blade’ movie to screens and is facing yet another delay.
This time, the issue is the Writers Guild of America strike. The union’s members downed tools and began picketing on May 2nd after failing to work out a new contract with the studios and other companies such as Netflix.
Under the terms of the strike, writers in the union cannot work on movies and TV series that are signatories to its contract –– and that includes both Disney and Marvel.
So, according to The Hollywood Reporter, team Marvel has chosen to press pause on production of the movie, which had been due to begin next month in Atlanta.

Blade: the story so far
Despite all the excitement over the announcement that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali would play the character during Marvel’s 2019 Comic-Con panel, the progress has been slow.
‘Mogul Mowgli’ director Bassam Tariq was hired to make the movie, only to depart over scheduling issues –– and given a shift in writers to Michael Starrbury, also seemed to indicate problems with the script.
‘White Boy Rick’s Yann Demage came aboard in November last year, but Pizzolatto’s hiring signaled that the movie was still having issues –– mostly, apparently, with tone. ‘Blade’ was never going to be quite the usual Marvel quip-fest, choosing instead to go a slightly grittier route.
But treading that line has apparently been trickier than anyone imagined.

Originally crafted by Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman as a human who was immune to vampire bites, he was later changed to Eric Cross Brooks, whose mother is murdered by the bloodsucker Deacon Frost as she gives birth. The attack passes on vampire enzymes to her child, who becomes a Dhampir – a mix of both human and vampire.
Gifted with speed, strength, and the ability to walk in the daylight (hence his other name, the Daywalker), his mission is to hunt down and destroy vampires. In his time, he’s crossed paths with many notable Marvel characters in the comics, including Spider-Man and the Avengers. He’s also battled living vampire Morbius, who had his own movie out earlier this year, starring Jared Leto.
Yet Blade is probably most famous for the trilogy of movies released by New Line in 1998, 2002 and 2004, starring Wesley Snipes as the gruff, sword-swinging character.
Marvel had targeted a September 6th, 2024, release date, but that is all but certain to shift.
‘Blade’ is just one of the projects being affected by the industrial action. While most of the movies for this year and into next are either shot or in the middle of work, it’ll impact both big screen and small screen work beyond that –– the likes of ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’ –– and the next season of ‘Stranger Things’ have both paused their writing rooms, with the ‘Things’ team putting out a social media post explaining the situation and supporting the strike.
