  • ‘Cocky’ Kit Harington Feels Jon Snow Is Now Safe on ‘Game of Thrones’

You should never feel safe on a show that kills main characters while they’re using the toilet. No one — and nowhere — on “Game of Thrones” is safe. That said, Kit Harington is probably right. His character, Jon Snow, is one of the few who will probably be sticking around for the bulk or entirety of the final two seasons.

Harington earned an Emmy nomination for GoT Season 6, and he talked to TheWrap about Jon’s death-to-king journey, which initially disappointed him. TheWrap asked if he thought, between seasons 5 and 6, about how being dead and coming back would affect and change Jon.

“I did. But at the same time, you don’t get the scripts until about two weeks before you start shooting the new season. I knew I was coming back to life, but I didn’t know if I’d come back as a changed person, as a villain. So I couldn’t pre-plan anything, which was hard. And then I got the scripts, and actually, he comes back as himself, as the Jon that everyone knows. Which at first I found disappointing. But it’s more subtle than that. He has an insight into what lies beyond that very few people in his world do, and that no one in our world does — he knows that there’s no afterlife. Which does quietly drive who he is and what he wants to do.”

Before the Battle of the Bastards, Jon told Melisandre not to revive him if he died on the field. Don’t bring him back again. TheWrap asked Harington if he’s wondering when Jon will die for good.

“[Laughs] Yeah. But here’s the thing: I feel like one of the safest people on Thrones now. Maybe I shouldn’t say that. He could die next season, but I felt very safe this season. Because if I come back to life in Episode 2, it would be awful storytelling if you kill me in Episode 4. So I felt a bit cocky this season.”

You have to be cocky to feel safe on this show. But if he’s around for the end game, he hopes Jon Snow learns the truth about his parentage — Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen — and he has his own ideas about what that might mean for Jon’s future.

“I do, and I never really like expressing them. If I say what my theory is, then some people will take it as gospel because I play the character. And I also find it unhelpful in playing the character to theorize about it, because he doesn’t think too much about it. If he gets to know that truth at some point, which I hope he will, it will be a really fascinating moment to play.”

Season 7 will only have seven episodes, down from the usual 10, and the final Season 8 is also meant to be shortened. But if King Jon is one of the “safe” characters, where do you suspect he’ll be by the time the screen goes dark in a couple of years? Sitting on the Iron Throne? Still the King in the North? Back up at The Wall, where he started and wanted to be First Ranger?

Read Harington’s full interview, it’s pretty good, including the note that they practiced that “gasp” return about a thousand times.

  • Emmys 2016: Kit Harington, Maisie Williams Earn First Nominations for ‘Game of Thrones’

A Girl is now an Emmy nominee! And Jon Snow is not just alive and king, he’s up for an Emmy, too.

“Game of Thrones” always does well at the Emmy Awards, earning heaps of nominations for HBO and picking up several awards during the ceremonies. But this year, two new actors are on the list of nominees for their work in “Game of Thrones” Season 6 — 19-year-old Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, and 29-year-old Kit Harington for the King in the North, Jon Snow.

Kit isn’t on social media, but Maisie is, and she reacted to the announcement by retweeting the first post, then adding more herself:

Congrats! They are not alone, though. The show itself was once again nominated for the top award of Outstanding Drama Series, and there were many other nominations (see GoT’s full rundown here) including for the writing, directing, and visual effects of Episode 9’s “The Battle of the Bastards.”

Plus, Emmy stalwarts Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke were also nominated, and the legend that is Max von Sydow got a guest actor nod. (Sadly, there was no guest actress nomination for Bella Ramsey as Lyanna Mormont).

In total, HBO and “Game of Thrones” once again had the most nominations of any network or series, with 94 for HBO, and 23 for GoT.

Here are the acting nomination categories for the GoT stars:

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series – 2016

  • Is ‘Game of Thrones’ Launching a Jon Snow Spinoff? Not So Fast

Please. Jon Snow already gets enough attention on “Game of Thrones.” If HBO is going to OK a spinoff, it should be The Torienne Show, following Brienne and that “wildling with the beard,” Tormund. But rumors starting spreading over the weekend, courtesy of U.K. tabloids like the Daily Star, that Kit Harington was in talks for his own series.

According to the Daily Star’s report, a “senior executive at HBO confirmed ‘exploratory talks’” with Kit about a spinoff. This exec reportedly said, “Any spin-off built around Jon Snow, who is hugely popular with fans, would also undoubtedly involve other characters from the cast. When the seventh season wraps next year, it’s going to be a case of figuring out who we want to join us for a new show and which of those cast members actually want to jump on board.” They added that the spinoff could make Kit one of the highest-paid stars in TV history, at more than £684,000 (around $990,000 U.S.) per episode.

But hold your Hodors, ’cause Entertainment Weekly talked to “reps for the show and actor” who said “there is zero truth to this.”

EW added that HBO has consistently said there are no current plans for a spinoff or prequel — however, that may change now that Michael Lombardo is leaving as HBO’s top programming exec. There’s a wealth of material for prequel stories, in the recent past or ancient history of author George R.R. Martin’s universe.

It’s still not even clear when this particular story is ending, though. The most recent news is a proposed ending of 13 more episodes spread across “Game of Thrones” Season 7 and Season 8. But that’s not set in stone yet, either, so one kingdom at a time.

*If* HBO ever says yes to a spinoff, what would you most like to see? After Season 6’s most recent episode, we’d love to follow young Ned, Lyanna, Benjen, and company, if for no other reason than to spend more time with Wylis.

  • Kit Harington Spoiled Jon Snow’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Fate to Avoid Speeding Ticket

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-THEATRE-OLIVIER-AWARDSJon Snow may know nothing, but a certain police officer out there could give Varys tips on how to quickly get top secret intel.

As you know if you’ve been watching “Game of Thrones” Season 6, Jon Snow came back to life at the end of Episode 2. But there was a 10-month gap between the character’s death in the Season 5 finale and the start of Season 6. In the meantime, actor Kit Harington was told by the producers to keep it a secret from everyone — but he told his parents and his girlfriend (Rose Leslie, who played Ygritte) right away. And then he ended up telling a cop.

Kit Harington shared the story in a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Kit: “A few people knew quite quickly, but they were all very trusted people. But no member of the public, no stranger. Well, actually, that’s not strictly true.”

Jimmy: “What are you talking about? You told a stranger you were alive?”

Kit: “OK, one policeman. There’s a story behind it in that I was driving back from my parents’s house and I was driving too fast. Actually I was being a bit naughty, I was going over the speed limit. I [see] the sirens go off behind me. This policeman comes up, pulls me over. I’m a bit sheepish, ‘I’m really sorry, I wasn’t looking at the clock.’ He said, ‘Do you really how fast you were going? That’s a bookable offense.’ I said ‘Yes, I’m very, very sorry, sir.’ He said, ‘Look, there’s two ways we can do this. You can either follow me back to the police station now and I book you in. Or you can tell me whether you live in the next series.”

    The audience and Jimmy laughed.

Kit said he laughed at the time too, but the cop’s face was serious. He said, “I have to tell you, whether I take you into the police station depends on what your answer is.” So Kit looked at him and said, “I’m alive next season.” So the cop nodded and said, “On your way, Lord Commander. Keep your speed down this far south of the wall.”

Classic! If only we could all get out of tickets like that. But speaking of being a bit naughty, that cop’s ethics sound closer to Robert Baratheon than Stannis, since that’s not quite how it’s done by the book. But oh well, he got the confirmation that everyone wanted and not even President Obama got before the episode aired. Varys would be jealous.

Watch Kit tell the story, and share his very odd private-scratching superstition, in these “Tonight Show” videos:

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 is now airing, and Kit has been in every episode so far, including the emotional Episode 4, “Book of the Stranger.”

  • Kit Harington: ‘Most Epic’ Jon Snow Episode Ahead on ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6

Now what? “Game of Thrones” isn’t entirely about Jon Snow, but Kit Harington confirmed that Season 6 is his character’s biggest season to date. Episode 3, “Oathbreaker,” ended with Jon quitting his job as Lord Commander and walking out of Castle Black to go … where?

Obviously, many fans want him to head down to Winterfell, save Rickon Stark and Osha, and hand Ramsay Bolton a fresh can of whoopass. But we’ll have to see if that happens, and if he’ll run into Sansa Stark, Brienne, and Pod along the way.

Kit Harington told Entertainment Weekly why Jon quit the Night’s Watch, and also teased some very exciting Jon stories ahead:

“He’s done with it. He’s seen the other side, seen what’s there, and comes back and realizes he needs to lead his life and get out of there. This place betrayed him, and everything he stood for has changed. Plus, he had to kill a child, Olly, and that’s what really does it. He kills an underage kid and he can’t see the point in being up there anymore. At the heart of it, he knows by staying at the Wall he can’t help the kingdoms and he’s probably going to die very quickly if he stays.”

In EW’s new Jon Snow cover story, they were on set while Kit filmed an epic battle, with Jon swinging his sword and kicking butt. So we know that’s ahead, and these shots from the Season 6 trailers suggest some other players in that game:

Get hype! In the issue, there’s also this exciting tease, during the Q&A:

EW: How big a season is this for Jon moving forward?

Kit Harington: “It’s the biggest season for him so far. There’s one episode this season, which is Jon’s story, that’s the most epic episode we’ve done.”

Do you think “Jon’s story” will include this major battle — the biggest the show has ever staged, according to the showrunners — and also confirmation about Jon’s past? Either way, we’re looking forward to this epic episode.

  • Here’s What Is (and Is NOT) Next for Jon Snow on ‘Game of Thrones’

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 viewers may be a little too used to people coming back from the dead at this point. It’s like a get out of jail free card. But don’t expect Jon Snow to play that card again. If he dies once more, that will be it.

Many fans expected Jon Snow to return after his death in the Season 5 finale, but the big lingering question remains: What happens next? It’s not like Jon can go back to being Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch after they stabbed him to death. Who is he now, how has he changed, and what will he do next?

Kit Harington isn’t going to spell it all out, or spoil anything major before Episode 3 airs, but the actor teased some details on Jon’s future, telling Entertainment Weekly there’s a very important conversation ahead that sums up Jon’s experience:

“There’s a brilliant line when Melisandre asks: ‘What did you see?’ And he says: ‘Nothing, there was nothing at all.’ That cuts right to our deepest fear, that there’s nothing after death. And that’s the most important line in the whole season for me. Jon’s never been afraid of death, and that’s made him a strong and honorable person. He realizes something about his life now: He has to live it, because that’s all there is. He’s been over the line and there’s nothing there. And that changes him. It literally puts the fear of god into him. He’s seen oblivion and that’s got to change somebody in the most fundamental way there is. He doesn’t want to die ever again. But if he does, he doesn’t want to be brought back.”

It’s all or nothing now. No six revivals like Beric Dondarrion, back in Season 3.

And, as EW noted, the idea that Jon saw nothing removes any lingering idea that Jon’s consciousness was in Ghost while he died, like he was warg-ing Bran style. But if there’s nothing, then where is this power coming from? Is there no Lord of Light/The Seven/The Drowned God/Many-Faced God?

By the way, if you want to see photos from this Sunday’s Episode 3, and read more spoilery speculation about what’s next, head over here.

  • Kit Harington Fooled His ‘Game of Thrones’ Castmates, Too

The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - ArrivalsAfter “Game of Thrones” finally revealed the true fate of Jon Snow during Sunday night’s episode (SPOILER ALERT for anyone living under an internet-free rock: He was brought back to life), actor Kit Harington has been making amends for misleading fans about his character’s big reveal. Next stop on the actor’s apology tour: Setting things right with the “GOT” cast and crew, who the actor said he had fooled, too.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harington explained the top-secret process by which showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss colluded with him to conceal Jon Snow’s resurrection plotline, which involved strategizing before the beginning of season five, way back in the summer of 2014. As Harrington told EW, he initially thought keeping such a big secret would be “a fun game,” but quickly realized that deceiving so many people wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

” … I had to lie to a lot of close friends and cast members and crew,” Harington told the magazine. “The longer it went, the more I felt like I was betraying them.”

One of the people hoodwinked by Harington’s lies was fellow castmember Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark. The actor revealed that Turner, thinking she would never see Harington on the “Thrones” set again, wrote him “a really long letter about how much she loved working with me.” Sounds like Harington might want to write Turner a letter of his own — filled with lots of “I’m Sorry”s.

For more intel from Harington and other “GOT” insiders about the Jon Snow resurrection plot, check out the new issue of Entertainment Weekly when it hits stands on Friday.

  • Kit Harington Apologizes for Lying to ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans

“Game of Thrones” finally settled, once and for all, whether Jon Snow is coming back or staying dead.

    *Spoilers, obviously*

He came back. So, right after Season 6, Episode 2 aired on the East Coast, Entertainment Weekly posted some quotes from the actor, from an interview done in secret.

So what does Mr. Harington want to say to everyone, now that Jon Snow has been revived in “Home”?

“Sorry! I’d like to say sorry for lying to everyone. I’m glad that people were upset that he died. I think my biggest fear was that people were not going to care. Or it would just be, ‘Fine, Jon Snow’s dead.’ But it seems like people had a, similar to the Red Wedding episode, kind of grief about it. Which means something I’m doing — or the show is doing — is right.”

Oh, fans cared all right. This poor guy has been hounded for the past 10 months, with fans watching his hair, movements, and everything else for clues. But you have to imagine the actors who play Ser Barristan, Shireen, Stannis, Myrcella, etc., all wish there was this much outcry about their Season 5 deaths.

You can watch Kit apologize to fans via EW’s video, but do you really blame him for fudging the truth a bit? What was he supposed to say, “Yes, I did really die, but I come back in Episode 2, via Melisandre as many fans suspected, so just wait a week after the premiere?” He had no choice, and “no comment” wasn’t exactly an option when they put him on the Season 6 press tour.

Speaking of press, Kit is on the new EW cover with the headline “He’s Alive!” with back-patting from EW and the producers about how they kept Jon’s revival a secret, even though fans have been speculating all year that he’s not staying dead because it never made sense that our ice king of “A Song of Ice and Fire” would really stay gone. It’s not really that shocking, it’s just awesome that it finally happened.

Also awesome: Everything else in “Home.” Just as awesome, what we think will happen with Jon Snow’s story next week.

  • Kit Harington Takes Shocking Lie Detector Test About Jon Snow’s Death

Kit Harington Portrait SessionNo one could possibly be looking forward to “Game of Thrones” Season 6 more than Kit Harington so he can stop answering everyone’s constant bloody questions about Jon Snow. Is he dead? Is he really dead? But how dead is he? Is he staying dead? Fans basically stalked Harington through filming for the new season, even more than usual, and pointed out when they saw him on set as evidence that Jon Snow is maybe not SO dead.

Season 6 is starting on April 24, and the cast members, including Harington, are in promotion mode. Harington was just on “The Jonathan Ross Show” and he was asked/forced to do a lie detector test to answer questions on Jon Snow. It wasn’t your typical test, though: Harington had to put his arm in the “Stone of Truth” and if Ross didn’t like Harington’s answer he got an electric shock.

The only acceptable answers were “yes,” “no,” or “I know nothing.”

    Here’s the conversation:

    Here’s a mini transcript:

    Jonathan Ross: “Are you dead?”

Kit Harington: “Yes.” At that point, we hear a buzzing. “It actually gives me a shock!” He said on a scale of 1-10 the shock was a 5, so Ross turned it up and asked the same question. It was still “yes.”

Ross: “Can I see your dead face please?”

Harington does his stone face, dead Jon Snow expression.

Ross: “Is there any nudity in the next series?”

    Harington: “I know nothing.”

Ross: “Are you playing a dead body in the next series.”

    Harington: “Yes.”

Ross: “Do you become a white walker?”

    Harington: “No.”

Ross: “Do you come back as [couldn’t make out the name, someone famous in England, maybe]?”

Harington and the audience laugh. “No.”

But he didn’t say he wouldn’t come back as something other than a dead body. Either way we will see him when HBO premieres “Game of Thrones” Season 6 on Sunday, April 24.

  • Jon Snow Is in ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6, With a Catch

Jon Snow Game of Thrones“Game of Thrones” fans to accept that Jon Snow is dead and that he’s not starring in season 6 of the HBO drama.

The fate of his character has been the subject of much speculation since last year’s finale, but the actor adamantly told Time Out London that Jon is dead, deal with it.

“Look, I’m not in the show any more. I’m definitely not in the new series,” he said.

Harington has been spotted on set in Northern Ireland, though. There’s a reason for that: “I filmed some scenes of me being dead,” he explained, then joked, “It’s some of my best work.”

Of course, Harington, the show’s producers, and other cast members have all stated in the past that Jon Snow is definitely dead. Somehow, we think that probably won’t stop fans from theorizing on ways the character could still be alive. We’ll find out the truth when “Game of Thrones” season 6 premieres April 24.
