  • Channing Tatum’s ‘Comrade Detective’ Trailer for Amazon Is a Dubbed Retro Romanian Riot

Can you even imagine how the pitch for “Comrade Detective” went at Amazon? Let’s make an ’80s Cold War Romanian buddy cop comedy spoof and dub it in English with a voice cast led by Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Brilliant!

The trailer takes it to a meta level, starting with Channing Tatum as Channing Tatum, receiving a VHS tape of “our favorite forgotten Romanian television show,” which stars Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici with their lines dubbed by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. The rest of the Romanian cast will be dubbed by stars including Fred Armisen, Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, and Jerrod Carmichael.

Watch the spoof trailer now:This has cult classic written all over it, but seeing will be believing. Because this looks and sound insane.

Here’s the full synopsis from Amazon:

“In the thick of 1980’s Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country’s most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel (played by Florin Piersic, Jr and voiced by Channing Tatum) and Joseph Baciu (played by Corneliu Ulici and voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by—what else—but the greatest enemy: Capitalism. Though the beloved show was sadly forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has been rediscovered and digitally remastered now with its main heroes voiced by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective is a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be—and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before.”

“Comrade Detective premieres Friday, August 4 on Amazon Prime Video.

  • Here’s Why Joseph Gordon-Levitt Doesn’t Want a ‘Dark Knight 4’

Yes, the wise and wonderful Christopher Nolan always intended “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” and “The Dark Knight Rises” to be the entirety of the “Dark Knight” trilogy. ‘Cause, you know, trilogy means three. But come on. It ended just as Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s John Blake stepped into the Batcave! That was his beginning. As an actor, it has to be kind of disappointing to be presented as the next Batman but not actually get to tell that story. The audience was left to imagine.

Well, it may sound disappointing from here, but to JG-L, it’s exactly right. Here’s what the “Snowden” star told Cinema Blend, when they asked if playing Blake as Batman in his own “Dark Knight 4” movie was something he would’ve liked:

“I know we’re all used to the sort of Marvel movies, which are just kind of endless series. They don’t really have a beginning, middle, and end. But I think Nolan very much thought of that movie as a conclusion, and there’s a theme that runs through all three of those movies that begins in the first movie, runs through the second movie and it concludes in that moment where he says that Batman is more than a man, Batman is a symbol. And so to have another man other than Bruce Wayne kind of becoming Batman at the end of that trilogy, I think that’s the perfect ending to that story.”

Did you like that little swipe at Marvel in there? DC boy to the end. He’s right, even if we’d love Christopher Nolan to want to make another “Dark Knight” movie. It’s not like Batman’s story is no longer being told, it’s just not with JG-L, it’s with Ben Affleck and the new DCEU.

  • Christopher Nolan’s Top Rated Movies

the dark knight 2008Christopher Nolan is one of the most inventive directors of his generation, pushing the envelope with each movie. He casts brilliant actors and allows them to demonstrate their courage, humanity, and passion, making for powerful and emotional storytelling. Nolan is never locked into one genre — he has tackled period pieces, outer space thrillers, even dramas that feature the ability to shape people’s dreams. He also successfully rebooted the Batman movie franchise, creating a new take on Bruce Wayne along with the best Joker audiences have ever seen. This list doesn’t cover all the movies Nolan has directed, but it highlights some of his — and cinema’s — finest to date.

    ‘Inception’ (2010)

Inception,” is creative and cutting edge, with visual effects that showcase dream worlds where the rules of gravity and physics don’t apply. Leonardo DiCaprio leads a cast that explores the exciting and dangerous realm of dreams. Wrapped within this visually mind-bending futuristic film is a deeply personal story of loss. As his team invades the mind of a young businessman, DiCaprio’s character must come to terms with the tragic suicide of his wife. Until he is able to do so, his mind’s projection of her threatens to destroy every dream he is in and every person within the dream. The cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, and Marion Cotillard, who all demonstrate fearlessness in the face of achieving the impossible.

    ‘Interstellar’ (2014)

A remarkable family drama, “Interstellar” also explores the realms of physics, faith, space exploration, and time travel. Matthew McConaughey leads a team of astronauts through a wormhole to investigate three possibly inhabitable planets. At the time of his departure, his daughter (played by Jessica Chastain) is a young and curious girl who has a knack for science and the ability to see what others cannot. As her father is away in space, time passes very slowly for him (because, science) and very quickly for her, so when his crew is stuck outside a black hole with no way home, she becomes an adult back on earth. Through a series of incredible events, McConaughey must find a way to communicate with his daughter, find his way home, and ultimately save Earth. The profoundness of “Interstellar” will have you wanting to call the people you love, and the ending will leave you breathless.

    ‘Memento’ (2001)

One of Nolan’s first movies, “Memento” has a creatively mind-blowing plot, essentially telling the story in reverse order. The protagonist, played by Guy Pearce, suffers from a type of amnesia that stops him from creating any new memories. As Pearce’s character attempts to investigate the murder of his wife, he must write down clues using a series of hand-written notes and tattoos. Eventually, his body is covered in tattoos and his clues help him build his case, but the memory loss allows him to be manipulated by some very dangerous people, including Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano. The jaw-dropping ending reveals the frightening truth of what Pearce learns. “Memento” is a masterclass in reverse storytelling that will leave you equally disturbed and intrigued.

    ‘Batman Begins’ (2005)

Through his work on “Batman Begins,” Christopher Nolan officially “grounded” superhero movies and set them in a reality more plausible than spandex and capes. His versions of Batman and Gotham City were darker, more rooted in the comic books, and more realistic than in previous “Batman” movies. In “Batman Begins,” Nolan explores Bruce Wayne’s League of Assassins martial arts training, his inspiration for wanting to rebuild Gotham, and his transformation into Batman. Christian Bale is a pensive Bruce Wayne; Michael Caine is a delightful and meddling Alfred; Liam Neeson is a quick-witted and deadly Ra’s al Ghul. After being haunted by his parents’ deaths for years and going on a quest of self-discovery, Bruce Wayne decides to use his skills to save his city from impending destruction. “Batman Begins” revived a dying franchise, which Nolan then turned into a successful trilogy.

    ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)

“The Dark Knight” is the second of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The story starts by featuring a corrupt city when the District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) and Police Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) decide to clean it of organized crime. An optimistic Bruce Wayne believes he can give up his alter ego to live with Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) — until the Joker (Heath Ledger) throws a large, murder-filled wrench in his plans. The movie follows the Joker and Wayne as the Joker threatens to cause more and more mayhem, and Wayne must make some tough decisions on who he can save. Combined with Ledger’s haunting performance — and tragic death — it’s easy to see why “The Dark Knight” grossed over $158 million opening weekend.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Nails Voice of ‘Snowden’ in Oliver Stone Film Trailer

The official trailer for “Snowden” is here, showing director in full political paranoia mode, and doing an impressive job as the titular hero/traitor.

If you’ve spent any time listening to Edward Snowden talk about his experience leaking classified intel from the National Security Agency (perhaps in the documentary “Citizenfour”) you have an idea of his voice and cadence. JGL nails it in the trailer, which starts with Snowden being discharged from Special Forces training after breaking both legs, and taking him through his employment at the CIA to his decision to leak information about NSA surveillance activities.

The trailer illustrates Snowden’s shock about the level of government spying, painting him as a brilliant, almost Bourne-style operative. But we also see more of Snowden’s personal life, with as his girlfriend Lindsay.

    Here’s the trailer:

And here’s the synopsis from Open Road Films:

“Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.”

Apparently the real Snowden approves, since he tweeted this out:

    “Snowden” — which co-stars , , , , , and — is now scheduled to open September 16.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Explains ‘Sandman’ Exit, Neil Gaiman Responds

Joseph Gordon-Levitt had put so much into the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” comics — as a producer, but also would-be star and director — that when he unexpectedly left the project a few days ago, he felt compelled to issue a lengthy explanation on Facebook.

We first heard about this particular project in 2013, so it has been in the works for a while. A new writer, Eric Heisserer, was just announced on March 4. But apparently that was part of the overall creative clash, because the very next day, JG-L announced his own departure:

RE: SANDMANSo, as you might know if you like to follow these sorts of things, a while back, David Goyer and I made a…

Posted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Saturday, March 5, 2016

JG-L ended his post with a nod to the comic writer, saying, “…it’s been a particular privilege as well as a rocking good time getting to know Mr. Gaiman, whose generous insights and masterful work have certainly convinced me that the Lord of Dreams and the Prince of Stories are one and the same Endless pattern.”

Gaiman has the same affection for JG-L, retweeting the actor/producer’s post and sharing his own thoughts:

So don’t blame Neil Gaiman if you’re upset about this, and stay tuned for whatever may or may not happen next on the movie front.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Dressed as Yoda for the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Premiere

Premiere Of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - Red CarpetIt’s no secret that many Hollywood stars are obsessed with “Star Wars,” and that was apparent Monday night when dozens of celebs showed up for the world premiere of “The Force Awakens” in Los Angeles. But while most opted for their red carpet finest, Joseph Gordon-Levitt decided to take a different approach, dressing as a classic character from the series in a hilarious DIY costume.

Gordon-Levitt showed up at the event as Yoda, the wise, pint-size Jedi master who first encounters Luke Skywalker back in Episode V, “The Empire Strikes Back.” Though we don’t know yet whether or not he’ll appear in “The Force Awakens,” Gordon-Levitt decided to invite Yoda to the proceedings anyway, painting his face and neck bright green, donning a Jedi robe (which looked suspiciously like a bathrobe), and wearing green pajama pants printed with Dr. Seuss’s Grinch. Maybe he got confused and thought it was a “Star Wars”-themed sleepover?

Whatever the reason for the actor’s sartorial choices, we’re loving his ensemble. Gordon-Levitt is a big “Star Wars” fan (he told Cinema Blend earlier this fall that he had begged “Episode VIII” director Rian Johnson to cast him in the flick), and that’s certainly apparent from his gloriously geeked-out look last night. Check out a few more shots from his fun red carpet walk below.

Please commence shaking, crying and flailing, because there’s a new member of One Direction. And he’s a potato. Soon he will be extremely famous, and in the words of Jimmy Kimmel, “might be be dating Ariana Grande.” Let’s just hope he doesn’t get murdered on Thanksgiving.
Speaking of super famous people who teenagers are completely obsessed with (not to be confused with potatoes), The Tonight Show” and got in on a super-secret handshake with Jimmy Fallon. It was…lengthy.

Over on “Late Night,” Josh Hutcherson chatted about living with the cast of “The Hunger Games” in a hotel. Turns out they had an open door policy so you can imagine the hijinks than ensued, amirite?
Meanwhile, something totally amazing happened on “The Late Late Show:” Byran Cranston performed with the Grown Man Boy Band, wearing a white suit and mohawk. All you need to know is that he sang the lyrics: “I’ll make love to you in my minivan.” Blessed.
Finally, and also on “The Late Late Show,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt kissed James Corden on the mouth. It was beautiful, so please watch.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Returning to ‘Lip Sync Battle’ vs. Seth Rogen & Anthony Mackie

lip sync battle, joseph gordon-levitt, seth rogen, anthony mackieLip Sync Battle” crown again, and is teaming up with his “The Night Before” costars Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie for an epic holiday special edition of the Spike show.

Gordon-Levitt, Rogen, and Mackie are set to throw down later this month, joining hosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen for some holiday-themed debauchery, complete with Rogen playing a naughty Elf on the Shelf and an appearance from rappers Run-D.M.C., who perform (well, “perform,” since they’ll probably be lip syncing, too) their classic “Christmas in Hollis.” Other special guests are set to drop in, too.

But the real draw will be to see if Gordon-Levitt can once again claim “Lip Sync Battle” glory, following his The Tonight Show,” where he went head-to-head with Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant. While Fallon granted both men the crown, audiences seemingly sided with Gordon-Levitt, and he’s not likely to leave the “Lip Sync Battle” stage this time without sole possession of the championship belt — even if he’s gotta dress in drag as Janet Jackson to do it.

Check out a preview of the fun below. The “Lip Sync Battle” holiday special airs on November 19 on Spike.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Julianne Moore’s ‘Box of Lies,’ Matt Damon’s Film Career in 8 Minutes

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

The ageless goddess that is “The Tonight Show” to promote “Freeheld,” but she took some time to play Jimmy Fallon’s classic game “Box of Lies.” They had to take turns describing mystery objects while the other tried to determine whether the descriptions were accurate or lies. Bless her, but she was terrible. Still awesome, though, and endearing in her attempts, especially in the last one.
If you want to learn how to speak with a Boston accent, Matt Damon was giving lessons over on “The Late Late Show.” Tip: “You can’t really do it without swearing.” (James Corden, who is British, was awful.) Matt also mentioned discovering his fear of heights at age 34. That’s Zachary Levin looking sharp next to him, mostly just listening to the conversation.
And here’s Matt Damon acting out his entire career in 8 minutes, in another one of James’s classics:
Over on “Late Night,” Seth Meyers and Kenan Thompson played a fun game called “Three Memes and a GIF.” Question: Isn’t it pronounced with a hard G not like “Jiff”?
Reigning Emmys queen Viola Davis was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” talking about her Emmys speech for that historic win, but also dishing on “How to Get Away With Murder,” and how she gives her mom money to go to the casinos every Thursday. Plus, you have to see Jimmy’s bit on “The Dangers of Texting With Viola Davis.” Talk about throwing her under the bus.
Michael Pena was on JKL and he broke some history too as the first Mexican astronaut … in “The Martian,” anyway.

Ellen Page talked (very eloquently) to Stephen Colbert about “Freeheld” and LGBT progress. Jesse Eisenberg was also on “The Late Show” talking about his new book of short stories and the embarrassment of his face. His words!
The perfection of Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on “Conan,” describing his new movie “The Walk” as a 3D action movie. He also said it’s like a heist movie, but no one gets hurt. And why not, here’s Mark-Paul Gosselaar reliving his time as Zack Morris back on “Saved by the Bell”:
