‘The Conners’ Recasts a ‘Roseanne’ Family Member

    The Conners
    ABC

    One out, one in!

Roseanne Barr is not returning as Roseanne Conner for the “Roseanne” spinoff “The Conners.” Apparently ABC will be killing the TV Roseanne via an opioid overdose, perhaps as a balance to killing off Dan Conner (John Goodman) at the end of the original run of “Roseanne.”

ABC also just announced a recasting — Maya Lynne Robinson is joining the family as DJ’s (Michael Fishman) wife Geena Williams-Conner. Geena was deployed in Afghanistan, and only briefly seen last Season 10 over Skype. At that point, she was played by Xosha Roquemore. It’s not clear why the role was recast.

It looks like “The Conners” has bigger plans for Geena, who is also mother to young Mary (Jayden Rey). ABC posted several photos of DJ, Geena, and family tied to “The Conners” premiere in October:

Fans first met Geena back in 1994 in the “Roseanne” episode “White Men Can’t Kiss,” as the girl DJ didn’t want to kiss in his school play because she was black. Last year, we learned that DJ later married Geena.

Showrunner and executive producer Bruce Helford shared a statement on the new casting:

“We’re thrilled to welcome the incredibly talented Maya Lynne Robinson to the cast this season. Her character 2nd Lieutenant Geena Conner, whom a younger DJ was reluctant to kiss in his school play, comes full circle as his wife and Mary’s mother, bringing back a little piece of Conner history. Yet, while Geena is no stranger to the family, viewers old and new will enjoy seeing how her ‘military-style’ discipline meshes with the Conners’ more laid-back attitude.”

“The Conners” premieres Tuesday, October 16 at 8/7 on ABC. The premiere, titled “Keep on Truckin’” has this synopsis:

“A sudden turn of events forces the Conners to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before.”

We can all guess what that “sudden turn of events” might be.

  • John Goodman Shared How ‘The Conners’ Will Explain Roseanne’s Absence: Report

John Goodman Shared How ‘The Conners’ Will Explain Roseanne’s Absence: Report

Roseanne Barr and Dan Goodman in Roseanne
    ABC

Ever since ABC canceled “Roseanne” in late May and then decided to move forward with “The Conners” the following month, there has been an awkward question: How will the new show will explain the absence of its predecessor’s titular star?

Well, wonder no more, because John Goodman has an answer. The actor recently did an interview for The Sunday Times, and he indicated that his character’s wife, Roseanne (Roseanne Barr), will be killed off.

“It’s an unknown,” he said (via Deadline). “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”

Oh, how things have changed. Until “Roseanne” returned earlier this year, Goodman’s character, Dan, was the one who had been killed off. When they got him on board for the revival, they had to explain away his death in what had been the series finale in 1997. Now, the TV family will be grieving again, and it seems unlikely that they’ll ever get their lost love one back.

The “Roseanne” cancellation came after Barr posted a racially charged tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Barack Obama. There was a swift, strong backlash, including writer and co-producer Wanda Sykes announcing that she was quitting. ABC’s decision saw a lot of jobs be lost in the immediate aftermath, but fortunately, “The Conners” brings back much of the cast and crew.

  • ABC Orders ‘The Conners’ Spinoff Without Roseanne’s ‘Financial or Creative Involvement’

Roseanne Conner is (probably) dead. Long live “The Conners”!

ABC has ordered a “Roseanne” spinoff called “The Conners” (working title, but it works) with a series order of 10 episodes for Fall 2018.

The network announced the news Thursday night, along with statements from the cast and ousted star/creator Roseanne Barr.

It sounds like “The Conners” will kill off Roseanne Conner, maybe similar to how they killed off Dan Conner (John Goodman) in the original series finale.

    Here’s the spinoff synopsis:

“After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.”

The show will star OGs John Goodman (“Dan”), Laurie Metcalf (“Jackie”), Sara Gilbert (“Darlene”), Lecy Goranson (“Becky”), and Michael Fishman (“D.J.”). It will air Tuesdays (8:00-8:30 p.m.) just like Season 1.

ABC added that additional cast members and a premiere date will be announced later.

They also took pains to say “Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.” That had been a sticking point of any spinoff plans — since she co-created these characters, any spinoff without her would have kept giving her money. But in her statement, Roseanne said she accepted a settlement to keep the jobs of the existing cast and crew.

ABC posted that Executive Producer Tom Werner and Roseanne Barr “have reached an agreement that will allow Werner Entertainment to produce a spinoff of the Roseanne series for ABC without Barr’s further creative or financial participation. “

    Here’s Roseanne’s statement:

“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

    Here’s Werner’s statement:

“We are grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family.”

    Here’s ABC’s statement:

“The Conners’ stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter and love. The spinoff will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.”

And here’s a joint statement from returning stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman:

“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”

Fans will surely have their own statements about all of this.

ABC canceled “Roseanne” in late May, after a particularly racist tweet from the star. Many fans suggested the show continue with a spinoff called “The Conner Family” or “Dan,” and ABC was reportedly interested in possibly zeroing in on daughter Darlene. Now we know what the network settled on.

  • ABC May Reboot ‘Roseanne’ With Darlene Spinoff

“Roseanne” is dead. Long live Darlene?

Sara Gilbert has reportedly been calling fellow “Roseanne” cast members to gauge their interest, should ABC go ahead and reboot the show focused around single mom Darlene.

John Goodman is said to be “very interested,” TMZ reports.

It’s basically the same thing as what fans had suggested after “Roseanne” was canceled, that the show should be revived and focused around Dan Conner or the Conner Family. Centering it around Darlene does the same thing — especially if Goodman will be there, and we know Darlene’s kids would be involved. As long as Laurie Metcalf brings in Aunt Jackie, why not?

A spinoff would save the jobs of the crew, cast, and writers who suddenly lost their Season 2 jobs.

However, as Entertainment Weekly had previously pointed out, Roseanne Barr helped to create these characters. So a spinoff around existing characters would still give her money:

“The characters were conceived by her and Matt Williams. If the sitcom were to continue without the matriarch, the actress would still benefit financially. So a key insider informs EW that discussions will continue today on whether it makes sense to keep the other actors but potentially design a new series around them — ergo, the Bonners, or whatever you want to call Goodman, Metcalf, and the clan of misfits.”

It sounds like ABC is serious about retaining the supporting structure of this brand, just erasing Roseanne Barr as the lead. The “Roseanne” revival was their most popular new series and they don’t want to lose that audience. But it may be bad news for fans of canceled shows like “Lucifer,” since they were hoping maybe the “Roseanne” opening would mark their salvation.

  • Fans Suggest ABC Go With ‘Roseanne’ Spinoff Called ‘Dan’ or ‘The Conner Family’

“Roseanne” is no more, because of Roseanne. Even Roseanne Barr isn’t defending her actions. (Instead, she’s blaming Ambien.)

    But!

The “Roseanne” revival was ABC’s most popular new show, and it wasn’t just because of Roseanne. What about John Goodman‘s Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf‘s Jackie, both Beckys, etc.?

Some fans suggested ABC split the difference — dump Roseanne, and give the rest of the stars their own spinoff. Punish the right person while not punishing the rest of the “Roseanne” cast and crew or the fans.

Jimmy Kimmel had some fun with the ABC headlines, since “Jimmy Kimmel Live” also airs on the network. He offered a similar suggestion, saying “Roseanne” should just dump Roseanne and change its title to “Dan”:

It sounds like ABC is seriously exploring spinoff/new show options, but there’s a downside. Here’s some context from Entertainment Weekly:

“Here’s the challenge, though: Roseanne was created by Roseanne Barr. The characters were conceived by her and Matt Williams.

Other shows (including “Lucifer”) are already hoping to benefit from the “Roseanne” loss. We’ll have to watch that 2018-2019 schedule space to see what ABC does.

If you have ideas, say them loud and proud now while the execs are still probably in meetings about what to do.

  • ‘Roseanne’ Revival Premiere Draws a Strong Reaction From Fans

The Conners returned in full force for Tuesday night’s revival of “Roseanne.”

Season 10 started with back-to-back episodes, earning a massive 18.2 million viewers and a 5.1 rating among adults 18-49.

The premiere quickly joked about and then explained Dan’s (John Goodman) death from the Season 9 finale: Dan finds Roseanne’s unpublished transcript in the garage, and quips, “This would’ve sold like hotcakes if only you hadn’t killed off the most interesting character.”

The revival also established Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) as a Trump supporter with aunt/life coach Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) as a “nasty woman” who wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton until Roseanne put doubts in her mind … so she went with Jill Stein.

We also saw how the two Beckys would be used together — with original Becky actress Lecy Goranson planning to be a surrogate for Andrea, played by second Becky actress Sarah Chalke.

The most heartwarming storyline was tied to Darlene (Sara Gilbert) moving back home with her two kids after losing her job. One of those kids is her son, Mark (Ames McNamara), who happens to like to dress in girls’ clothing sometimes, which worried Dan enough to give the kid a knife to take to school to fend off bullies.

All in all, it was a topical but still very funny premiere that felt to most fans like old times. However, because there were so many political lightning rods, and Roseanne Ross is a controversial right-wing figure in real life, several people chimed in with criticism:

“Roseanne” Season 10 continues with Episode 3, “Roseanne gets the Chair” on Tuesday, April 3 on ABC. Here’s the synopsis:

“Roseanne’s clash with Darlene over her parenting reaches a breaking point; Dan tries to help Roseanne with her bad knee by getting her an elevator chair.”

  • 15 Things You Never Knew About ‘The Big Lebowski’

It’s been 20 years since moviegoers were first introduced to The Dude, an affable hippie just trying to make his way through life and bowl a few rounds — in between buying coffee creamer using a check.

The Big Lebowski” was not a smash hit when it first debuted, but it’s built up a considerable cult following in the years since — deservedly so. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, here are 15 things you might not know about this Coen Bros. classic.

    1. While fictional, the movie draws inspiration from several real-life figures. The Dude himself is loosely based on a man named Jeff Dowd, who helped distribute the Coens’ first film, “Blood Simple.”

    2. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore‘s character, Maude, is based on artist Carolee Schneemann and singer Yoko Ono. John Goodman‘s Walter is based on screenwriter John Milius.3. The Coens’ friend, Peter Exline, a screenwriter and film professor, also directly inspired the development of “The Big Lebowski.” It was Exline who actually coined the phrase: “It really ties the room together” and whose personal anecdotes inspired several key moments in the film.

    4. If you’ve ever wondered how The Dude manages to financially support himself while clearly in a perpetual state of “funemployment,” an early draft of the screenplay revealed he’s the heir to the Rubik’s Cube fortune.5. The majority of The Dude’s outfits were supplied by Jeff Bridges himself. He even reused a shirt he previously wore in 1991’s “The Fisher King.”

    6. In order to film the bowling shots from just the right angle, the Coens mounted a camera atop an RC car frame and used that to follow the bowling balls down the alley.
    7. The Dude drives a 1973 Ford Torino. Two versions of the car were used for filming. One of them was destroyed, but the other later resurfaced in an episode of “The X-Files.”

    8. Every single song played during the course of the film is actually heard by the characters themselves, either on the radio or on the supermarket loudspeakers.

    9. Bridges clearly has musical talent, as shown by his starring role in 2009’s “Crazy Heart.” However, Bridges also moonlights as a musician on the side and plays in a Lebowski-inspired band called The Abiders.10. Steve Buscemi‘s poor, put-upon hero Donnie (RIP) apparently has trouble remembering his own name, or at least has really ticked off his tailor. The character’s customized bowling bowling shirts always display the wrong name throughout the film.

    11. Donnie is also notable for bowling a strike every single time — until his very last turn, which comes moments before his tragic death.
    12. Walter’s gun shop, Sobchak Security, advertises that it sells “peace of mind.” This is a callback to John Goodman’s character in “Barton Fink,” who made a similar claim.13. Peter Stormare‘s character, Uli, was partly conceived on the set of “Fargo.” There, Stormare’s character showed a similar obsession with pancakes, and Stormare would often lapse into an exaggerated German accent in between takes.

    14. The Dude is so lazy, that he’s never actually seen bowling once in the entire film, even during that iconic dream sequence. However, he does drink exactly nine White Russians during that time.15. Characters say the F-word exactly 292 times throughout the movie, which puts it just above 1983’s “Scarface” and below 1990’s “Goodfellas.”

  • Roseanne Barr Now Claims Dan Never Died at the End of ‘Roseanne’

ROSEANNE - Iconic comedy series Roseanne returns to The ABC Television Network on Tuesday, March 27, at 8 p.m. EDT, with nine new episodes featuring the complete original cast - Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman and Lecy Goranson. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role. New cast joining the one-of-a-kind Conner family includes Emma Kenney as Harris Conner-Healy, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy and Jayden Rey as Mary Conner. With fresh stories that tackle todays issues and even more laughs from a brilliant cast and crew that havent missed a beat, audiences old and new will celebrate the homecoming of Americas favorite working-class family. (ABC/Adam Rose)ROSEANNE BARR, JOHN GOODMANRoseanne is still Roseanne, so that hasn’t changed.

“Roseanne” is launching its revival — we can just call it Season 10 — March 27 on ABC. The cast shared new details during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, and ABC shared a bunch of photos from the premiere. (That’s one pic above, see more below.)

During the TCAs, Roseanne Barr insisted that Dan Conner (John Goodman) didn’t actually die in the Season 9 finale/series finale, “Into That Good Night, Part 2,” even though he was said to have died of a heart attack. (One of the first promos for the revival had a little joke on Dan’s return from death.)

TVLine challenged Barr’s assertion that Dan didn’t really die, but she shot back, “I think that you should rewatch it. A lot of the reason that I did that was to add another layer of freshness for people who are going to watch the series over and over.”

In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a summary of the series finale from The Roseanne Wiki:

“In the first half, the family talks about life after winning the lottery. Then Roseanne reflects about her fictional life as a voiceover monologue reveals that the show itself has really been her writing. She says that while the book she was writing was based on her life, she changed what she didn’t like. For instance: in reality, the Conners did not win the lottery; Dan died of a heart attack; Jackie–not Bev–was gay; Mark and Darlene, and Becky and David, were the Conner-Healy couples; and DJ went to college. In the final moments, after looking over her book, she goes upstairs and sits on the couch. The show fades to black and her trademark laugh is heard one last time.”

If they didn’t show it, it didn’t happen?

In other news, Roseanne confirmed that her character will be a Donald Trump supporter, as she is in real life. Executive producer Bruce Helford said the show will address the various political views within the family “in a very honest way and a very real way.”

Sara Gilbert (Darlene Conner) added, “It was a great opportunity to have a family that can be divided by politics, but still is filled with love. And what a great thing to bring into this country right now.” It was previously revealed that Darlene’s son Mark (Ames McNamara) will be a gender nonconforming character who wears traditionally feminine clothes but does not identify as transgender or gay.

We already know that the show found a clever way to include both of the stars who played Becky during the original run…ROSEANNE - Iconic comedy series Roseanne returns to The ABC Television Network on Tuesday, March 27, at 8 p.m. EDT, with nine new episodes featuring the complete original cast - Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman and Lecy Goranson. Also, if you’re wondering about youngest child Jerry Garcia Conner, Barr said they do mention him in the first episode. “He’s on a fishing boat in Alaska… We had so many stories to tell over the arc of these nine episodes.”

  • New ‘Roseanne’ Revival Promo Has a Sly Joke About Dan’s Post-Death Return

What is dead may never die! Wait. Wrong show?

“Roseanne” is coming back to ABC starting March 27, and John Goodman is returning as Dan Conner … despite Dan dying in the original series finale. No matter. He’s now alive and well enough to yell at the TV while watching sports, as shown in a series of new promos.

One of the promos features Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) seeming to address the dead elephant in the room through a sports-related joke. Dan and Becky (Lecy Goranson) are shown watching a Bulls basketball game, and Roseanne asks how it’s going. Becky says “It’s dope,” but Dan says he still thinks the Bulls of ’96 and ’97 would’ve beat these guys any day. Here’s Roseanne’s response:

“You can’t live in the past, Dan. When things are gone, they’re gone forever.”

Haha. Not true for Dan, and not true for the show.

Here are the two other new promos, including one with Sara Gilbert as Darlene:ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey previously said, of Dan returning from the dead, “I don’t want to talk too specifically, but I wouldn’t say we’ll ignore the events of the finale. Dan is definitely still alive.”

In terms of having two Beckys — one original, and then recast — the show found a clever way to include both Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke. Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Estelle Parsons, Sandra Bernhard, and Johnny Galecki are also returning.

The 2018 “Roseanne” revival will launch with a special hour-long episode at 8 p.m. on March 27. The show will move into its regular half-hour 8 to 8:30 timeslot starting Tuesday, April 3.

  • ‘Roseanne’ Revival With Original Cast in the Works

Roseanne (ABC) season 1Fall 1988Shown: [top] Sara Gilbert, Alicia Goranson, Laurie Metcalf [on sofa] Michael Fishman, Roseanne, John Goodman‘Roseanne” may be the next classic series to get a revival.

Deadline reports that an eight-episode limited series revival of the hit ’90s blue collar comedy is in the works. The original cast members — including Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, and Sara Gilbert — would reprise their roles.

Original series producers Barr, Tom Werner, and Bruce Helford are on board, as is Gilbert and Whitney Cummings.

Several outlets are reportedly bidding for the project, including original network home ABC and revival master Netflix (which has successfully made “Fuller House,” “One Day at a Time,” and “Gilmore Girls”). ABC is considered the “sentimental” favorite.

“Roseanne” was acclaimed for its honest depiction of a working class family. Roseanne was a factory worker, while husband Dan was a contractor. They and their three kids (later four) barely scraped by.

The show featured many notable guest stars, including George Clooney, Debbie Reynolds, Bruce Willis, and Sharon Stone.

Like with the upcoming “Will & Grace” revival, the idea was born when Goodman appeared on “The Talk” with co-host Gilbert, and the two staged a mini-reunion.

“Oh, hell yes … if we could get everyone together,” he told co-host Julie Chen of a potential revival. “The Big R [Barr] and I did a pilot about five years ago that didn’t go anywhere … but we were very happy to work together.”
