‘Smurfs’ receives a 4 out of 10 stars.

Coming exclusively to theaters on July 18th, it should come as no surprise to anyone that ‘Smurfs‘ is geared towards a much younger audience.

Directed by Chris Miller, and featuring the voices of many talented actors including Rihanna (Smurfette), James Corden (No Name), Nick Offerman (Ken), and John Goodman (Papa Smurf), ‘Smurfs’ is designed to capture the hearts of its target audience, which is young children.

‘Smurfs’ was made to introduce a whole new generation to to the lovable blue creatures that sometimes go up against evil wizards. On paper this concept might sound silly, but many of us grew up with our own version of the Smurfs, and it is nice that the younger generation has theirs now, as well.

Director Chris Miller knows his way around an animated feature, having worked on many including ‘Puss in Boots‘ and ‘Shrek the Third‘, so expectations were high going into this one.

One thing that every parent knows is that little kids do not have a long attention span. Because of that, animated features need to be able to keep their attention with bright colors, humor geared towards them, and action sequences. There needs to be something going on at all times or they will start to lose interest.

Something that ‘Smurfs’ does is keep moving, that is for sure, but because of this, it loses a lot of the explanation and exposition that is needed to properly tell the story. For those that do not know (or remember) the lore of Smurfs, some key plot points will not hit as hard – or even make sense.

The main message of the movie is taking the time to find your thing, and what you bring to the table. Smurfs have names based on their personality traits. For example, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Grouchy Smurf. No Name has tried thousands of things, but has not yet discovered what he is good at, which is why he is nameless at the start of the film.

The confusion comes with other Smurfs having names like Ron and Ken, so why doesn’t No Name at least have a regular name until he finds his thing? This is never explained and while kids probably will not pick up on it, parents are sure to be perplexed.

The animation itself is simple enough, but looks great on the big screen. ‘Smurfs’ is bright, colorful, and vibrant. Even when scenes take place in the evil Gargamel and Razamel’s lairs, it never gets too dark or scary. Later in the film, the plot points find a way to let the animators explore a few different styles. This is the best scene in the movie. It’s equal parts fun and creative.

While adults are sure to be rolling their eyes at many of the corny dad jokes being told, kids will be cracking up. This movie leans into the type of humor that it knows its audience wants, for better or worse.

    Cast and Performances

‘Smurfs’ has a star-studded cast that includes many of the greatest actors working today. With so many Smurfs in the village, some of them only have a line or two to deliver, but they all still bring their A-game.

John Goodman voices the beloved Papa Smurf. This character is very well known, which you would think would add some pressure to the role, but he voices him perfectly. John Goodman’s voice is soothing and very fatherly that it instantly works.

James Corden does a great job as No Name, who is struggling throughout most of the movie. He brings a timidness to him that is needed to believe his journey. One of the most memorable characters is Mama Poot, voiced by the always hilarious Natasha Lyonne. She knows how to deliver a punchline, even if the line written is silly.

Rihanna in "Friend Of Mine" music video from 'Smurfs'. Photo: Paramount Pictures.
Rihanna in “Friend Of Mine” music video from ‘Smurfs’. Photo: Paramount Pictures.

The trailers teased that this movie was going to be a musical, going so far as to cast the incredibly talented Rihanna in the lead as Smurfette. From the start, it was clear that music was going to be the main focus, and while there are some songs kids will be singing on repeat, none of them standout as the hits of the summer.

Rihanna does a decent job as Smurfette, making her a likable enough character who encourages No Name throughout the film. That said, the script she is given does the character no favors, causing her backstory to feel rushed and come out of nowhere. Still, Rihanna does what she can with what she is given.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Papa Smurf (John Goodman), No Name (James Corden), Smurfette (Rihanna) and Brainy Smurf (Xolo Mariduena) in ‘Smurfs’ from Paramount Animation. Photo: Paramount Pictures.

‘Smurfs’ is a good introduction to these characters for a new generation, but it is also lacking so much of what older generations love about them. The story is rushed and lacks a lot of explanation that is needed in order for it to make sense. It isn’t all bad though as the animation is pretty, Rihanna can sing (we all know that), and the messages of never giving up on yourself are important.

Despite a script filled with dad jokes that will land with the kids and leave adults rolling their eyes, it has its moments. If there were to be more movies in the franchise, kids will surely gobble them right up.

Say what you will, ‘Smurfs’ certainly knows what its target audience wants, and delivers on it.

    Preview:

    • John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed and more are joining a new Tom Cruise movie.
    • Alejandro G. Iñárritu is in the director’s chair.
    • The movie will focus on a powerful man looking to prove he’s humanity’s savior.

Word broke back in March that Tom Cruise –– who has spent the last few years focused almost entirely on making the latest two ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies (the next will be out in 2025) –– had finally found something else to do other than crazy stunts as Ethan Hunt.

Under his deal at Warner Bros., Cruise boarded the new film from ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’ director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, though details were scant at the time.

Now we have a little more to go on, including that Iñárritu has built quite the cast around Cruise, with John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde all officially aboard and Riz Ahmed close to a deal.

What’s the story of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new movie?

Alejandro G. Iñárritu accepts the Oscar® for Achievement in directing, for work on 'The Revenant' during the live ABC Telecast of The 88th Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre in Hollywood, CA on Sunday, February 28, 2016. Credit/Provider: Aaron Poole / ©A.M.P.A.S. Copyright: Scott Diussa.

Per Deadline, the new film is something the director co-wrote with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, and focuses on the most powerful man in the world (we’ll go ahead and assume that’s who Cruise will play, but there’s no official word on that yet), who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

In addition to starring, Cruise will also produce the new movie.

The filmmaker has gathered quite the assortment for this new project, which isn’t surprising given that he’s won (and steered actors to) several Oscars in his time.

Goodman, of course, needs little introduction as he’s been a working actor for years, currently to be found leading the cast of ‘Roseanne’ sitcom ‘The Conners’.

Hüller is best known for starring in last year’s ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, for which she was nominated for an Oscar and won several other awards.

Stuhlbarg is a character acting and supporting stalwart who most recently cropped up in Apple’s ‘The Instigators’.

Plemons was last seen in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kinds of Kindness’ and won Best Actor at Cannes for the anthology film.

Ahmed won an Oscar for live-action short film ‘The Long Goodbye’ and nominated for another starring in ‘Sound of Metal’.

And finally, Wilde is perhaps not as well-known as the others, but did good work in horror movie ‘Talk to Me’ last year. She’s also been seen in ‘Everything Now’ and a miniseries called ‘Boy Swallows World’.

When will Iñárritu’s new movie be on screens?

There are no details about the new movie’s release, which is a co-production of Warner Bros. and Legendary. But you’d have to figure it’ll take aim at awards season next year given the talent involved.

  • ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Interview: Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell

The new series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ which is set in the MonsterVerse universe that includes the movies ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ began its first season on Apple TV+ November 17th.

The show is executive produced by director Matt Shakman (‘Fantastic Four’), written and developed by executive producers Chris Black (‘Severance’) and Matt Fraction (‘Hawkeye’), and features real-life father and son actors Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell both playing new character, Lee Shaw.

Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell star in Apple TV+'s 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.'
(L to R) Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell star in Apple TV+’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kurt and Wyatt Russell about their work on ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ having the opportunity to work together playing the same role, Kurt’s memories of working with his own father, and what it’s like to be on a TV series set in the cinematic MonsterVerse.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Kurt and Wyatt, director Matt Shakman, VFX Supervisor Sean Konrad, and actors Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.

Moviefone: To begin with, Kurt, can you talk about having the opportunity to work with Wyatt on this series, not on screen, but behind the scenes, to create one seamless performance as the same character? What was that experience like for you?

Kurt Russell: It was a bit daunting. We investigated it and realized that two known actors had done a lot of stuff, but the father-son had never been done, and we were excited about it. We were never really, I don’t think, intimidated by it. It was just like we were wanting to get out there and get after it. It was a lot of hard work, a lot of collaboration to figure out who Lee Shaw is going to be and what he’s going to do to help pull these two time periods together. That’s where I had the most fun with Wyatt, and ever since doing some of these interviews and stuff, we were just saying the other day, we haven’t spent this much time since he was playing hockey in Vancouver. It’s been great.

MF: Wyatt what has this experience like for you working with your dad to create the same character?

Wyatt Russell: Same kind of thing. I wouldn’t say it was daunting or I was intimidated, but there was some nervousness on my part because I’d never worked with my dad. There are all the comparisons, they can be kryptonite, they could also be great. So, it was like, “Well, if we’re going to do this, then it’s got to be really good.” The bar in my head, you set even higher than you normally do, and that’s probably a double-edged sword, a good thing and a bad thing. But I was excited by the opportunity to do something big and nervous. I remember my mom (Goldie Hawn) coming into my room one day and talking about something else, but she was like, and my grandfather on my mom’s side said this, “If you’re in the water and your toes just can’t touch the ground, that’s probably right where you’re supposed to be,” and that’s how I felt. It was a good thing, but that’s how I felt.

MF: Kurt, you worked with your father Bing Russell on a few projects, did working with Wyatt on this show bring back any of those memories?

KR: My dad and I worked together five or six times. We were father and son in ‘Elvis.’ He played Vernon Presley. But this is just completely different on its own, being the same person. We have slightly different energies or rhythms, but we have a lot of idiosyncratic similarities. So, we wanted to find the character, find the one that worked, that would be entertaining for the audience, tell the story, complete the mystery, and pull the two time periods together. At the same time, we created that blending thing to have the audience stop thinking about that and just at the end of it say, “We’re so happy they got those two guys to do it. That was actually a good idea.” It wasn’t a stupid trick. It was a good idea.

MF: Finally, Wyatt, the show is huge in scale and scope, and is very cinematic. Did it feel at times like you were making a movie rather than a TV show?

WR: Yes. That was what was really the backstop for any of my anxieties, quite honestly, was then you’d look at where you were. You’d look at the scope of what it was. You’d look at what, in the first two episodes, Matt Shakman was trying to capture with the camera. You’d look at the costumes and what they were putting into it, and it was like, “Okay, well if I suck, this is all going to look awesome.” So, it did feel good and hopefully I didn’t suck. It was awesome. It was on a huge scale.

What is the plot of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?

Following the epic battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, two siblings (Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe), following in their father’s footsteps, uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues introduce them to the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga, spanning three generations, reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Kurt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Launching on Apple TV+ on Friday November 17th with two episodes (and a new episode arriving weekly after that for eight weeks) ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ expands the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off with 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and has continued through movies such as ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (2017) and the most recent example, 2021’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’.

And while those were produced as a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary, the latter has now partnered with Apple’s streaming service to deliver more stories set in the same universe (albeit without most of the characters).

You might wonder how a TV series can pull off the sort of giant (pun intended) action as the movies, and while the show naturally has to be on a smaller scale, it still has the hefty budget of Apple to create some effective scenes of giant beasts.

What works about ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?

'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,' coming soon to Apple TV+.
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ coming soon to Apple TV+.

With much more connective tissue to the cinematic “Monsterverse” than you might expect (it kicks off, for example, with a cameo from ‘Kong: Skull Island’s Bill Randa, played by the movie’s John Goodman), ‘Monarch’ treads a careful path between trying to replicate what worked in the movies –– because let’s be honest, they have been very changeable in quality –– and forging its own identity.

Focusing on a handful of characters whose lives have all been impacted by the Titans in different ways was a smart move, because it allows for a lot of drama between some compelling human beings trying to figure out a way forward. One storyline follows Anna Sawai’s Cate Randa, who discovers that her recently-deceased father had a whole other life and family in Tokyo, including half-brother Kentaro (Ren Watabe). That sets them on a collision course with Monarch in the modern day (or at least 2015).

The real highlight, however (as you might be able to guess) is the canny casting of Kurt and Wyatt Russell playing different ages of the same character, in this case Lee Shaw. We first meet the man back in the 1950s, where he’s involved in the effective birth of Monarch as an organization alongside a younger Randa (here played by Anders Holm) who is working with (and eventually married to) fellow scientist Keiko (Mari Yamamoto).

(L to R) Wyatt Russell, Mari Yamamoto and Anders Holm in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.

The two actors do a fantastic job of making you believe this is the same man (not too tough given the familiar resemblance), sharing tics and actions and giving Shaw some real depth.

Kurt Russell brings a convincing world-weariness and spark to the role of the older version, who is essentially imprisoned in a retirement home run by Monarch. It’s not long before he’s out and helping the likes of Cate on their investigation, though.

And when called upon to deliver on the monster spectacle, the show doesn’t hold back, flashing back to the Godzilla clash in San Francisco in ‘Godzilla’ and further back to humanity’s first encounter with the giant reptile.

But it’s not just the OG Titan who has their moment here; ‘Monarch’ is loaded down with plenty of different, new creatures, including one in the snowy wastes of the Arctic.

‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’: Script and Direction

Created by TV veteran Chris Black (‘Severance’, ‘Mad Men’) and comic book writer Matt Fraction (Marvel comics’ ‘Hawkeye’), ‘Monarch’ has both highs and lows when it comes to its creation.

Some sequences, such as an impressive moment where Shaw, Randa and Keiko investigate a disused nuclear facility swarming with creatures, or Cate’s experiences in the subway monster incursion shelter in Tokyo.

There’s a real feeling of comprehensive world building here, expanding on what has been created for the movies in interesting fashion.

Not every character works as well as Shaw or the others –– filling out the supporting cast are a mixture of tropey types, some of whom do receive a little more exploration and the main story of Cate and Kentaro sometimes trips over the line into melodrama early on. And there are times (albeit few of them) when the effects or production design ambition outstrips the show’s capabilities.

There was a big risk involved in trying to extend the “MonsterVerse” on TV screens, but with Apple’s considerable budgetary backing and some great casting choices, ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ works more than it doesn’t.

Though the selling point might be the combined power of the Russell father and son and some of the monster moments, ‘Monarch’ also does the work to fill in the gaps between, meaning that it’s worth watching even when a giant creature isn’t on screen or we’re not watching a Russell do their thing.

And the mystery element (fueled by what we already know from the movies) also works, even if the odd clue here and there feels like ideas that have been brought to screens before.

‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with executive producer and director Matt Shakman about his work on ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ diving into Monarch’s backstory, connecting it to the movies, balancing different timelines, casting Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell as the same character, and show’s new creatures.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about having the opportunity to dive into the backstory of Monarch and, with this series, connect it to the MonsterVerse movies?

Matt Shakman: What I love so much about what Chris Black and Matt Fraction, who created the show, have done here is they’ve created this beautiful human-centric way into the MonsterVerse. I think if you’re a fan of the MonsterVerse movies and of Godzilla, there is so much here that you will love. It’s full of Easter eggs, and it’s a puzzle that works within existing mythology. But if you are not familiar with that mythology, there’s a way in as well through the eyes of these wonderful characters who also don’t know anything about this MonsterVerse and are learning as they go. So, it’s an emotional story that works within a complicated couple of timelines. I think what is most impressive is that it’s a multi-generational family drama, that it also is combined with epic storytelling and colossal action.

(L to R) Anders Holm and Mari Yamamoto in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.

MF: As you mentioned, the show does unfold in two separate timelines. Can you talk about the challenges of navigating those different storylines across different timelines?

MS: It’s very clever what Matt and Chris created because we have a trio in the past and a trio in the present, and there are direct connections that we learn about as the series goes on, how they’re related. Their stories get more and more intertwined as the show goes on. There are thematic resonances, too, that are happening. They’ve created a story that truly is about legacy. It’s in the title of the show, and it makes a whole lot of sense. It’s about, obviously, this organization Monarch, but it’s about the Randa family in the present day. It’s Cate (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe) who learn about each other, realize they have a sibling they did not know about, and that there’s a lot they did not know about their father. Then, we’re learning about their grandparents in a way who are the founders of Monarch, and about Hiroshi’s parents. So, there’s a whole lot of stories about trauma, discovery, love and loss that trickles down from the 1950s all the way to 2014 and 2015.

MF: Whose brilliant idea was it to cast both Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell as Lee Shaw, and what was it like for you working with both actors?

MS: That was an idea that just presented itself by fate, I think, really. It was incredible to work with them. They’re both brilliant actors. I’m a huge fan of Kurt Russell going way back, just like I am of Godzilla, and I’m a huge fan of Wyatt’s, too. It was amazing to be able to work with them to create one character. I think they had been offered father/son things before, understandably, because they bear such a striking resemblance to each other, but then nothing had clicked, or they hadn’t found the right project, but they really wanted to work together. Then here we go. We have this idea that they could play the same character. What’s fun about it is they’re very different actors. They’re different in their vibes. They’re different in the way they approach things. I think they really loved the idea of, “Oh, well, I’ll take a little bit from Wyatt, and I’ll take a little bit from Kurt, and we’ll put it together, and we’ll create our own version of a character that we might not otherwise have created in that way.” It became a family project.

MF: Finally, can you tease fans about the new creatures they will see in this series and how you wanted those monsters to look?

MS: We have obviously legendary characters that you see, like Godzilla from the Toho films and from the legendary MonsterVerse. We’ve got characters from there. But we did get to invent a whole bunch of new characters, and that is just super exciting for a MonsterVerse fan to be able to add things. What’s great about the monsters we were creating is we wanted them to fit into their environment, whether it was on the ice in a world of snow or whether it was part of Skull Island. When we were creating the opening for John Goodman, we had all sorts of different ideas about how that would’ve worked and what creatures would be involved. But when I found this location in Hawaii that was this volcanic rock jetty that went out into the water, it felt exactly like Skull Island. I was like, “Oh, we’ve got to shoot here.” I went climbing down to the end of it, and suddenly, all these crabs that I didn’t see that were camouflaged against the rock ran away. I thought, “Oh, my gosh. Well, that’s what we must do. We have to do a camouflaged crab monster that fits this environment.” So, the environment inspired us. Then we looked at all sorts of different crabs and other creatures we could smoosh together, and then that just made it big and threw it at one of these characters that we love. That’s the joy of it.

  • First Teaser for ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’

Well, now you can, because the first trailer from the series is online. And while we were perhaps concerned that this might be the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ to the likes of ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (the Marvel series suffered in comparison to its big screen brethren due to a lack of effects budget and scope), Apple has certainly shelled out enough cash to bring monstrous beasties to life.

The teaser, as they are wont to do, only hints at that, but we do get a good close-up of Godzilla roaring away, as he is… wont to do?

  • ‘Freaky’ Director Christopher Landon Remaking ‘Arachnophobia’

Julian Sands in 1990's 'Arachnophobia' directed by Frank Marshall.

Do you hate spiders? Does the very idea of the wriggling creepy crawlies fill you with an endless feeling of dread? Are you concerned that one is walking up behind you EVEN AS YOU READ THIS? Then you might not be thrilled to learn that a new version of 1990 horror comedy ‘Arachnophobia’ is in the works.

But stick with us, because the news would seem to be on the positive side of things – and spiders will be staying on the screen. Christopher Landon, the writer and director behind the likes of ‘Freaky’ and ‘Happy Death Day’ is developing the new movie.

The original was directed by Frank Marshall (who still makes movies himself, but is these days better known as a producer on the giant likes of the ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Jurassic World’ franchises. He’ll be an executive producer here).

Arachnophobia’ focused on a small town terrorized by a colony of deadly South American spiders accidentally brought into the U.S. Jeff Daniels starred as a doctor who moves his family from the big city for the calm bucolic small-town life with John Goodman playing a know-it-all exterminator. Julian Sands, Harley Jane Kozak, Mark L. Taylor, Henry Jones, Brian McNamara, and Stuart Pankin were also all in the cast.

It was a hit on its release, but while it certainly has its fans, it isn’t an untouchable masterpiece that resists any attempt to remake it. James Wan, who along with his own directorial career is a prolific producer via his Atomic Monster company, is among the backers here.

And Landon certainly has the horror credentials – he wrote a couple of ‘Paranormal Activity’ entries before stepping up to also direct ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ in 2014. He’s also directed films such as ‘Burning Palms’ and ‘Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’.

Yet it was with the two ‘Happy Death Day’ movies that he really made the leap into more public awareness, the time loop comedy thrillers featuring Jessica Rothe’s snark-tastic Tree Gellman caught in a repeating nightmare of stalk-slashing (and the sequel going even further into the genre) proving to be popular.

Landon followed that up with 2020’s ‘Freaky’ which, while it became a box office victim of the pandemic, still managed to entertain with the story of a serial killer (played by Vince Vaughn) who swaps bodies with a cheerleader (Kathryn Newton) and all the violent, funny chaos unleashed along the way.

Given his body of work, we’re confident that Landon will be able to walk the line between terrifying and funny. And with the advances in effects technology, we can only imagine the spidery set-pieces he can dream up.

He’s most recently headed in a more family friendly direction with his next film, ‘We Have a Ghost’ for Netflix. That one stars Anthony Mackie, David Harbour, Jennifer Coolidge and Tig Notaro in the story of a man who becomes internet famous after befriending a ghost who resembles actor Ernest Borgnine. Can’t wait to see that one…

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Trailer: John Goodman Is a Famous Televangelist

    HBO/YouTube

HBO has blessed us with the trailer for “The Righteous Gemstones.”

The upcoming comedy series centers on the Gemstone family, a famous family of televangelists that is also extremely dysfunctional. The show’s synopsis describes them as having “a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work.” That’s on display in the new preview — we see plenty of both holy and unholy behavior.

John Goodman plays the patriarch, Eli Gemstone, while his kids are played by Danny McBride (Jesse), Adam DeVine (Kelvin), and Edi Patterson (Judy). They have an interesting dynamic, with the brothers, in particular, being at odds with one another in the trailer. They get competitive during baptisms and trips to the bathroom alike. Watch below.

The series also stars Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz, and Greg Alan Williams. It’s created by McBride, who serves as writer, director, and executive producer. Jody Hill and David Gordon Green executive produce as well.

“The Righteous Gemstones” premieres in August on HBO.

  • The ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Cast to Reunite for Disney+ Sequel Series

The ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Cast to Reunite for Disney+ Sequel Series

    Pixar

Monsters, Inc.” is back in business, with a new animated series featuring almost the entire original voice cast of the beloved Pixar flick in development for Disney’s upcoming streaming service.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show, “Monsters at Work,” will be a sequel series set after the events of the original 2001 film, which starred Billy Crystal as Mike Wazowski and John Goodman as James P. Sullivan, better known as Sulley. Other returning stars include John Ratzenberger (Yeti), Jennifer Tilly (Celia), and Bob Peterson (Roz).

The newcomers to the cast are equally as exciting. They include: Ben Feldman (“Superstore”), Kelly Marie Tran (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), Henry Winkler (“Barry”), Lucas Neff (“Raising Hope”), Alanna Ubach (“Coco”), Stephen Stanton (“Star Wars Resistance”), and Aisha Tyler (“Archer”).

Here’s the breakdown for “Monsters at Work,” and who’s who among the cast, per THR’s report:

‘Monsters at Work’ picks up six months after the original movie with the power plant at its center now harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis. The series follows Tylor Tuskmon (Feldman), an eager and talented mechanic on the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team who dreams of working on the Laugh Floor alongside Mike and Sulley.

Tran will voice Val Little, Tylor’s lifelong friend and confidante; Winkler will give life to Fritz, the scatterbrained boss; Neff will voice Duncan, an opportunistic plumber; Ubach is Cutter, the officious rule follower; Stanton is Smitty and Needleman, the bumbling custodial team; and Tyler voices Tylor’s mom, Millie Tuskmon.

We’re especially excited to see Tyler among the cast, since she’s excellent on long-running FX animated spy spoof series “Archer.” The language on this show will probably be a bit cleaner than Lana’s, though.

“Monsters at Work” is set to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2020. An exact launch date for that service is currently unknown, but it’s expected to arrive at the end of this year. Additional details are expected to be revealed during a Disney investor presentation this week.

  • ‘The Conners’ Closer to Season 2 After Main Stars Reach Deals

‘The Conners’ Closer to Season 2 After Main Stars Reach Deals

    The Conners
    ABC

The three biggest stars of “The Conners” have been clear that they want to continue the series, and now they’re closer to making it happen.

Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, and Laurie Metcalf have all reached new deals for Season 2, Deadline reports. They have not all signed yet, per the publication, but wrapping up negotiations is a good sign. They’re now an important step closer to the sitcom’s second season.

For the three main stars, there will reportedly be a pay increase. Each will make $375,000 per episode, up from $250,000 per episode, according to Deadline. The publication reports that there could be up to 13 episodes, an increase compared to Season 1’s 11. Original “Roseanne” stars Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman are also expected to return, but there’s no word on how much they’ll be paid.

Gilbert, who is an executive producer on the series, told TVLine in January that she was “hopeful that there will be a Season 2.” They appear to have prepared for it, given that the first season left questions the audience wants to see answered. Fortunately for fans, all signs are pointing toward a return. ABC is likely to renew the series when the entire cast is signed, and Deadline reports that they are expected to sign their deals soon.

“The Conners” Season 1 debuted in October. If progress continues, we can look forward to Season 2 in the near future.
