    • Warner Bros. has made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies touted were ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Dune: Part III’
    • The likes of Tom Cruise and James Gunn showed up to lobby exhibitors.

After a hugely successful 2026 in terms of both box office and awards, Warner Bros. arrives at CinemaCon with a bigger story looming over its head –– the future. With the Paramount merger inching closer, there will of course be questions about the new regime’s plans, even as the likes of David Ellison maintain that the studio’s output will be boosted.

But the focus, of course, will be on the movies headed our way from the studio, including a couple of DC Studios offerings (‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’), Denis Villeneuve’s new ‘Dune’ entry and that rare beast, a non-‘Mission: Impossible’ job for Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘Digger’.

With Patton Oswalt as the host (who joked that he wanted to join the DC Universe), this is what was presented…

Before any of the big announcements, we got word from Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy that the studio is launching a new label called Warner Clockwork, whose first production is ‘Anora’ director Sean Baker‘s next project, ‘Te Amo!’.

A sizzle reel celebrating last year’s accomplishments was followed by an even more exciting one for 2027, including some big casting news dropped for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu kick off the 2026 portion of the show with their collaboration, ‘Digger’. Cruise heaped praise on his director, with the filmmaker explaining that he got the idea for the new movie nine years ago and started discussing it with the actor seven years ago. Cruise, according to him was the only choice.

The movie tells of most powerful man in the world as he embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

The new thriller from David Robert Mitchell (‘It Follows’) is a suburban supernatural story produced by J.J. Abrams.

It features the Platt family,  who band together to navigate their new surroundings after a cosmic event transports their suburban neighborhood to someplace unknown. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast, but the presentation was mostly an extended trailer.

The first project to cover was ‘Clayface’, about the Batman antagonist, which Safran described as more focused on character than genre. He showed off the first footage from the movie.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock showed up to tout the witchy sequel, mentioning their shared appreciation for director Susanne Bier and how the production rebuilt the original movie’s house. What can we expect? “Midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof, and also have our past catching up with us,” according to Kidman. “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”

After some talk about how the characters are inspiring, the first teaser trailer was shown.

The big finish was, somewhat naturally, the new ‘Dune’, with director Denis Villeneuve taking the stage accompanied by Fremen warriors.  Villeneuve said he made the movie “1,000%” for the fans, and the audience was treated to the first seven minutes of the movie.

Accompanied by the likes of Zendaya, Momoa and notorious opera-disliker Timothée Chalamet, Villeneuve showed off a battle scene that promises some suitably epic action.

    • John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are developing a new ‘Star Trek’ Movie.
    • They’ve come up with a new idea not connected to previous movies or shows.
    • They’re also writing the script.

While the TV side of the franchise has been ticking along nicely, big-screen ‘Star Trek’ fell into something of a black hole, with little progress towards theaters.

But that hasn’t stopped Paramount from trying to shove it back into warp speed and now Deadline brings word that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who developed a fresh, funny and heartfelt take on fantasy with ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ for the studio, have been handed the keys to the film franchise.

    7ERMr3hgn8bDgTWarLubW2

At least, they’re aboard to develop a new movie (more on that below), with the hopes of kickstarting the franchise back to life. Will they succeed? Others have tried and failed (again, see below), but we’re certainly hoping to see them give it a shot.

The movies have been mired in development limbo since ‘Star Trek Beyond’ opened to less-than-thrilling box office in 2016.

There have been various films announced or reported upon, including a return for Chris Pine’s Kirk and co. from J.J. Abrams’ “Kelvin” timeline movies, a one-off by Quentin Tarantino (which always seemed less likely to happen) and the more recent word of a prequel/origin story to be directed by ‘Andor’s Toby Haynes with a script by Seth Grahame-Smith.

The latter may still happen (with Paramount going on a “try anything” spree), but there was more recent word of ‘X-Men’ veteran Simon Kinberg being hired as the producer overseeing the whole thing. There’s no mention of him in Deadline’s story about Daley and Goldstein’s deal, but perhaps he will be around to help out?

What’s the story for this latest ‘Trek’ development?

Little is known about what Daley and Goldstein have planned for ‘Star Trek’, though new Paramount overseer David Ellison said on a recent earnings call that it would not be a sequel in the Pine-led series but something different with new actors.

Which is almost a shame, since Pine clearly enjoyed working with the directors on ‘Dungeons & Dragons’…

When will this new ‘Star Trek’ movie head to screens?

If you’ll pardon us, given recent history we won’t hold our breath just yet until this thing actually has a trailer.

Dr. Seuss’ ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ Photo: Amazon.

Written by prolific author Dr. Seuss –– AKA Theodor Seuss Geisel –– the original book was first published by Random House on January 22nd, 1990.

It was the last book to be published during Seuss’ lifetime.

The story, written in his usual rhyming form, begins with the narrator, relating the decision of the unnamed protagonist (who represents the reader) to leave town.

The protagonist travels through several geometrical and polychromatic landscapes and places, eventually encountering a place simply called “The Waiting Place,” which is ominously addressed as being a place where everyone is always waiting for something to happen.

As the protagonist continues to explore, spurred on by the thoughts of places he will visit and things he will discover, the book cheerfully concludes with an open ending.

The movie will reportedly focus on a young adventurer navigating the ups and downs of life.

What other Dr. Seuss books have been adapted?

Seuss is an author whose works have long been source fodder for TV shows, stage productions and more, including theme park experiences.

Some of his books have even been adapted more than once, including ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (for the TV ‘toon, the 2000 live-action movie and the 2018 big screen animated iteration).

Other tomes to have been turned into shows or movies include ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ ‘Green Eggs and Ham,’ ‘The Lorax’ and ‘Horton Hears a Who!

    20000051

The same studio behind ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ also has ‘Thing One and Thing Two,’ presumably focused on the chaotic sidekicks to The Cat in the Hat character, in development.

And that’s not even counting all the various theatrical productions, live shows and even movies that put the author himself front and center, talking about his life or his political views.

It’s perhaps not surprising that so many productions have sprung from his work –– after all, that includes many of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death in 1991.

Grande, as mentioned, played Glinda in Chu’s successful movie adaptation of the ‘Wicked’ stage musical (and the Gregory Maguire novel from which the show was sourced). She received an Oscar nomination for the role and will be reprising it in the second half of the story, ‘Wicked: For Good’, also directed by Chu (since he shot them back to back).

‘Wicked: for Good’ will be in cinemas on November 21st. And Grande is not done with ‘Wicked,’ either, since she and co-star Cynthia Erivo will be part of a live concert special featuring music from the movies, which will be broadcast on NBC on November 6th.

Beyond that, Grande recently landed a part in the new ‘Meet the Parents’ movie, which is in pre-production.

Gad is best known for roles such as snowman Olaf in the ‘Frozen’ animated movie franchise and playing LeFou in the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ live-action film.

He was most recently heard in ‘Strays’ as Gus, and seen in TV comedy drama ‘Wolf Like Me’. Gad is developing a variety of projects at the moment, including a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel alongside Mel Brooks.

The actor will also return to two of his most familiar roles, including a third ‘Frozen’ entry in 2027 and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’, in theaters the same year.

The small screen version starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a prosecuting attorney whose life is thrown into chaos.

Josh Holloway as Jim Ellis in 'Duster.' Photo: James Van Evers/Max.

‘Duster’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Landing on Max with its first episode on May 13th (followed by one weekly through July 3rd), ‘Duster’ represents two returns to TV for veterans of classic mystery box drama ‘Lost’ –– co-creator J.J. Abrams and leading ensemble member Josh Holloway.

    oSoTz4BxMZxGBdNqggRb17

Yet while their new series does come with a couple of mysteries driving the plot, this is really more about the easygoing, rugged charm of its main man, and an appealingly laidback (when not kicking into higher, more violent gear for semi-regular confrontations).

    Initial Thoughts

Rachel Hilson as Nina in 'Duster.' Photo: James Van Evers/Max.
Rachel Hilson as Nina in ‘Duster.’ Photo: James Van Evers/Max.

With Abrams here working alongside LaToya Morgan (a veteran of series such as ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Into the Badlands’ and ‘Parenthood,’ ‘Duster’ gives off the vibe of a 1970s crime series, and not just because of its sunbaked seventies setting.

It’s not exactly aiming to be high art, it just wants to entertain, and for the most part is successful in that endeavor, beyond some caveats we’ll explore below.

    Script and Direction

Keith David as Ezra in 'Duster.' Photo: James Van Evers/Max.
Keith David as Ezra in ‘Duster.’ Photo: James Van Evers/Max.

Abrams and Morgan kick the season off with the first two episodes and are mostly occupied setting things up in the early going, introducing us to Holloway’s Jim Ellis, and content to sometimes coast on the actor’s considerable charm and rugged (if this days a little more weather-beaten and lined) good looks.

Still, the creators don’t just have that on their minds; there is more to this new show. Ellis lives in the shadow of his late brother, a fellow charisma factory who died mysteriously when the van he was driving for a crime syndicate exploded.

These days, Jim mostly occupies himself –– when he isn’t bedding attractive women –– with running errands in his cherry red 1970 Plymouth Duster  for Ezra (Keith David), head of the criminal outfit who is struggling to maintain his grip on territory as others encroach, and worried about his family, especially ailing Royce (Benjamin Charles Watson), whose health factors into the first episode’s speedy set piece.

On the other side of the law (not that Jim’s portrayed as a total criminal, just working for one) we have fresh-faced FBI agent Nina (Rachel Hilson), who has an agenda of her own and an axe to grind against Ezra.

Nina also faces the reality of 1970s society –– she’s a black woman who must put up with both racism and sexism even despite making it through Quantico and with serious smarts and gusto to back up her badge.

If there are problems with the series on the scripting side it’s that too many episodes fall back on an annoying in media res format (we’d caution you not to start a drinking game based on how many feature an “hours ago” chyron lest you damage vital organs) and the main mystery, part of what Nina is assigned to, doesn’t always work as well as the rest. But it’s still more satisfying than some of Abrams’ past work.

Visually, the show (set mostly in Phoenix, but shot in New Mexico) is sumptuous, and directors Steph Green and Darren Grant keep the pace and tone on track, pulling off some effectively entertaining vehicular stunts and bone-crunching clashes.

It’s interesting to note that the ever-busy Abrams didn’t choose to direct any episodes, yet does contribute beyond his producer duties by getting back to one his old trademarks and crafting the period-appropriate and hard-charging theme for the show, which plays over a fun animated model car sequence that is like Hot Wheels for grown-ups.

    Cast and Performances

Donal Logue as Sergeant Groomes in 'Duster.' Photo: James Van Evers/Max.
Donal Logue as Sergeant Groomes in ‘Duster.’ Photo: James Van Evers/Max.

Holloway might not have been away from TV work as long as Abrams –– he’s been in a few shows here and there in the days since ‘Lost,’ but this feels like the highest-profile project built around him to happen along in a good while.

And he’s certainly up to the task, making Jim an easy character to like, but also giving him some deeper, darker layers as he digs into what happened to his brother. His chemistry with Hilson (non-romantic, which is a nice change) and David in particular is palpable.

For her part, Hilson should hopefully break out for this role, as she brings real energy to Nina, a woman caught between her ambitions and the reality of the world she lives in. She’s excellent in the part, just as comfortable taking down racist idiots as she is working with Navajo FBI partner Awan (Asivak Koostachin).

Keith David can play this sort of crime lord part in his sleep, but here he’s fully engaged as Ezra, who has a connection to Jim’s past and a stranglehold on local trading routes. David is always impressive on screen, and here he commands our attention.

Around the leads is a compelling group including the aforementioned Awan, Jim’s dad Wade (played superbly by Corbin Bernsen) and because no Abrams project would be complete without him, Greg Grunberg, who gets a solid supporting role as Nina’s immediate superior, the officious and occasionally smug agent Abbott. Donal Logue, meanwhile is at first almost unrecognizable as shady Sergeant Groomes, who gives Jim some early hassle.

    Final Thoughts

‘Duster’ won’t rev itself into the TV hall of fame any time soon, but it’s diverting enough, full of fast cast, fun crimes and Holloway on full leading man mode, all drawl and lead foot on the gas.

The central mysteries work to keep the plot idling along, but it’s the people you’ll want to keep spending time with.

    What’s the plot of ‘Duster’?

‘Duster’ is set in the 1970s Southwest and explores the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate that goes from dangerous to wildly, stupidly dangerous when a tenacious young agent comes into town hellbent on taking his crime family down.

    • Jon M. Chu and co-director Jill Culton are adapting ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’
    • It’ll be the latest movie based on a Dr. Seuss book.
    • ‘La La Land’ Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are writing songs for it.

Riding high on the success of his current musical movie, ‘Wicked,’ (even if he was denied a Best Director Oscar nomination) Jon M. Chu is already overseeing development on another, adapting the Dr. Seuss children’s tome ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ into an animated musical.

In fact, Chu has been attached to this one since 2021, but it’s now actually moving forward.

Warner Bros. Animation is backing the new project, which will see Chu co-directing alongside Jill Culton, a veteran of Pixar and DreamWorks who has directed the likes of ‘Abominable’ and ‘Open Season.’

And they have quite the team on this one –– J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot team are aboard to co-produce, and the movie will boast song by no less a duo that ‘La La Land’ and ‘The Greatest Showman’ EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

What’s the story of ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’?

Dr. Seuss' 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' Photo: Amazon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news of a release date (see below), the script, written by Rob Lieber, whose credits include ‘Peter Rabbit’ and ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’, will focus on a young adventurer navigating the ups and downs of life.

We don’t yet know who will be lending their voices to the movie.

What other Dr. Seuss books have been adapted?

(Left) Jim Carrey as the Grinch in 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' Photo: Universal Pictures.

When will ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ be in theaters?

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has announced that the movie will head to cinemas on March 17th, 2028.

That might seem like a long way away, but don’t forget the time it takes to make big, animated movies such as this.

Add to that the fact that Chu is also busy in post-production on the second part of the ‘Wicked’ movie, ‘Wicked: For Good,’ which will be in theaters on November 21st.

    • Samuel L. Jackson is the latest addition to J.J. Abrams’ next film.
    • Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega and Emma Mackey are also aboard.
    • The movie is being kept mostly under wraps but will shoot in the UK.

Samuel L. Jackson is famously known as one of the actors with a hefty past credits list, and he’s certainly not short of job offers.

The latest, according to The Hollywood Reporter comes from J.J. Abrams, who has been cooking up a mysterious new movie.

    4RRKGS2lQxdzD7ay34uu17

With the director is busy building the cast for his latest movie (more on that below), he’s now adding Jackson to the list.

What’s the story of J.J. Abrams’ new film?

In keeping with much of J.J. Abrams’ past work, this new movie is wrapped in secrecy for now –– while there was some chatter about time travel as a subject matter, that has been debunked (unless Abrams went back in time to fix things!)

But his return to theatrical features is a welcome one –– since wrapping up the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy with ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ Abrams has been pretty quiet on the movie front, at least as director.

He’s been throwing himself more into TV as a producer, and helping shepherd a few other filmmakers’ projects to screens.

Who else is in Abrams’ new movie?

Glen Powell stars in 'Hit Man'.

As with Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Abrams is the sort of director who can lock down pretty much any talent that he requires, short of them being unavailable.

Jackson is just the newest person mentioned; the film already features the likes of Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega and Emma Mackey.

As with everything to do with the movie, we don’t know what roles that ensemble will be taking, as the only concrete information appears to be a plan to shoot in the tax-break friendly studio spaces of the UK next spring.

    • Jenna Ortega is reportedly in final talks for J.J. Abrams’ new film.
    • Glen Powell is making his own deal to star.
    • Warner Bros. is backing the new movie.

If we know anything about J.J. Abrams, it’s that the man loves a mystery. In fact, he became famous for his “mystery box’” filmmaking as both a director and producer.

It’s perhaps not shocking then, that much about his next movie –– his first as a director since 2019’s ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ –– is being kept under wraps.

But according to Deadline, we are at least learning –– assuming it all works out –– who could end up starring, as both Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell are reportedly making deals to appear.

Can the polar bear from ‘Lost’ be far behind? Okay, probably not, but you can already sense Abrams’ old friend and frequent cinematic lucky charm Greg Grunberg waiting to see how he might be included.

As we mention above, this one is a big ol’ mystery. No plot details have emerged (there was some chatter about it being a time travel tale, but that has since been denied) and the title remains locked in a vault somewhere.

Abrams wrote the script for the new movie and his Bad Robot company is naturally involved to produce. It’ll be released by Warner Bros’. but beyond that… your guess is as good as ours.

What else are Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell working on?

Ortega is in high demand of late thanks to her star-making turns in the recent ‘Scream’ outings and Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’.

Next up for her in terms of release date is a reunion with ‘Wednesday’ director Tim Burton for ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, with the supernatural comedy sequel due to premiere at the Venice Film Festival ahead of its September 6th arrival.

    uLTv9GLrkBg9Jyg4AV3il3

She’s also part of the cast for Taika Waititi’s sci-fi pic ‘Klara and the Sun’ and Alex Scharfman’s comedy ‘Death of a Unicorn’ which also stars Paul Rudd and Will Poulter. Finally, she’s been busy shooting a second season of ‘Wednesday’.

As for Powell, he’s enjoying success on screen with ‘Twisters’, which is doing solid business. The actor has been working on comedy thriller ‘Huntington’ and will star for Edgar Wright in a remake of ‘The Running Man’ and John Lee Hancock’s legal true story ‘Monsanto’. Plus, he’s been talking of late of having been told the date he’ll need to be ready to shoot another ‘Top Gun’ movie.

When will the new Abrams movie be in theaters?

Among the many details that Abrams and co. are keeping quiet for now is any potential release date for the movie. We have to assume that someone at Abrams’ level can demand not to lock down a date until he’s ready to commit to something, though Warners will no doubt hope this can hit cinemas as soon as possible.

  • J.J. Abrams Producing A New Stephen King Adaptation

There are changes afoot for a new Stephen King adaptation being driven by J.J. Abrams. Once destined for television, ‘Billy Summers’ will now become a movie, according to Deadline.

Published in 2021, ‘Billy Summers’ is one of the few titles written by King not designed to scare the living daylights out of his readers (unless your particular phobia is hitman doing one last job), and in fact falls into crime thriller territory.

Never heard of it? Here’s your basic synopsis… Billy Summers is a hitman who is looking to retire and takes one last highly lucrative job to fill his bank balance. The job requires him to embed himself in a quiet town, where he pretends to be an aspiring writer (wonder if King had to do much research for that one).

He sets up in an office with a direct view of where hitman Joel Allen will be delivered to face trial for shooting two men during a poker game. Allen also has committed enough murders for some high-level mobsters to be scared the gunman will incriminate his former employers to lessen his sentence. Summers, a meticulous craftsman, becomes more and more cynical about the mobsters who’ve hired him, and his skepticism is well warranted as things go awry following the job’s completion.

How awry? Let’s expand on the story. When the regular client doesn’t pay, Summers escapes a trap. His life gets even more complicated when he finds out there’s a bounty on his life and he saves a rape victim named Alice. Summers and the woman end up on a cross-country journey to rectify the hit’s many wrongs.

Clearly Abrams is still happy to keep making projects based on King’s work, with his Bad Robot company having previously produced ‘Lisey’s Story’, ‘Castle Rock’ and ‘11.22.63’. As it stands now, the company is producing alongside Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Which means that should all involved be happy with the script, Abrams may take the director’s chair with DiCaprio starring.

Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are on script duty for this one, which, as we mentioned at the top of the story, was originally destined for TV (the writers make sense, since despite having moved on to successful movie careers, made their names working on the small screen likes of ‘Thirtysomething’.

Bad Robot originally envisioned this as a 10-episode series, with Zwick and Herskovitz running the show and Zwick directing several of the resulting installments.

But after it was packaged up and shopped to networks and streaming services in 2021, the team decided it might work better as a movie, and now Warner Bros. (where Abrams still has a deal) has nabbed the rights and the creative team ready to develop the movie.
