‘Countdown’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Releasing on Prime Video on June 25th with three initial episodes, ‘Countdown’ stars Jensen Ackles (‘Supernatural’) as Detective Mark Meachum, a headstrong LAPD office recruited for a multi-agency task force assigned to stop a serious threat to Los Angeles.

The cast for the new show, created by Derek Haas (‘Chicago PD’) also includes Eric Dane (‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Jessica Camacho (‘Watchmen’), Violett Beane (‘Death and Other Details’), Uli Latukefu (‘Black Adam’) and Elliot Knight (‘The Boys’).

Have you ever pondered what would happen if a truck carrying a load of episodes of your average network procedural collided with another hauling 1980s and 1990s action thrillers? If so, your answer is appearing on Prime Video as Haas, a writer and producer behind the likes of ‘Wanted’, ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ and the various Chicago-set TV series that are numerous enough to fill a whole night of NBC’s primetime schedule has essentially built his dream series.

Whether or not it represents your dream or your idea of a nightmare might depend on your tolerance/love for dialogue that is growled rather than spoken, action scenes set to propulsive rock tracks and every trope imaginable spun in admittedly fun fashion.

    Script and Direction

Haas and his writing team certainly know what type of show they were aiming to make here –– it is unashamedly action packed and about as subtle as being beaten around the head with a DVD copy of a straight-to-home-entertainment thriller.

The Prime Video budget means that the show was able to actual shoot in and around Los Angeles rather than relocating to Atlanta or some other city, and that mean the show has the shiny/grimy backdrop that makes it feel that much more authentic (even if the writing and some of the performances are purely synthetic).

This is clashing egos and team bonding, dialogue snippets that include lines such as “the only way to make this right is to make sure the people responsible are found and put in the ground”, all anchored by a cast who understood the assignment (particularly the leading man –– more on him in a moment).

Directors including Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Brown, Lisa Robinson and Avi Youabian use the California backdrops to bring the series to life in exciting enough fashion, and the show certainly looks decent, even if not quite at the level of, say, a prestige Apple TV+ offering.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), Luke Finau (Uli Latukefu), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane), Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), Damon Drew (Jonathan Togo), and Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles) in 'Countdown'. Photo: Elizabeth Morris © Amazon Content Services LLC.

Jensen Ackles is practically a genre to himself at this point, having cornered the market in cocky, charismatic lead characters with an easy smile, a quick wit and (in this case) floppy hair.

His Mark Meachum is exactly the sort of role at which he excels –– iconoclastic, driven and hiding a secret pain (in this case, a serious medical condition we won’t spoil). He can handle the action moments with aplomb but really comes alive when he’s just smirking at his co-stars or getting his way.

Eric Dane is playing the boss of the task force, and while he’s dealing with ALS that limits how much he can do, he still brings real presence to the role of Nathan Blythe. He’s completely believable as the man driving the team to figure out the case.

Elsewhere, the cast struggle to make quite the same impact, though the likes of Jessica Camacho (as a dedicated, yet troubled DEA agent) Violett Beane (as FBI tech genius and hacker Evan Shepherd) and Uli Latukefu (as Detective Luke Finau) do manage to pop.

And beyond them, a lot of fairly stock villain and terrorist characters, plus the sort of smug officials who are often threatening to shut the task force down only to be thwarted when our heroes pull out a win (or, in the case of Blythe, use their own powerful connections to shut down opponents).

‘Countdown’ launches with the death of a high-profile TV star playing a Homeland Security agent (we won’t name them and ruin the surprise), but very quickly lays its hand clear –– and if you can’t guess the case the team will end up running down from just the title, then I can’t imagine you’ve watched much television in the past.

But if you’re in the mood for silly action fun and vague nods to more complicated characters here and there, then ‘Countdown’ should fill a spot.

Moviefone: To begin with, Jensen, when you first read the screenplay, what excited you most about being part of this project?

Jensen Ackles: Unlike some other shows that I’m a part of, I read ‘Countdown’ with a true eagerness to know what was happening and an excitement. A youthful zeal, as my friend Eric Dane would say. It’s a thrill ride. It’s a ride that I would want to be on as an audience. I got the fortunate call to be on it personally, and there’s nothing in there that I was like, “I don’t want to that.” There were very little discussions with Derek about like, “Hey, can we change the this?” If anything, it was on the day. There was no ick factor. There was no like, “I don’t think I would do this.” Everything that he wrote was a template, and it was either done with precision or we played with it until we got what we wanted and what we needed, and it was a delight.

MF: Eric, your character is the boss of this unit, did that extend off set as well?

Eric Dane: So, everybody’s somewhat of a self-contained unit, but we’ve all coalesced nicely. There is no leader. There is just a group of people that have come together to endeavor to make the best show they can, and we had a great time.

MF: Finally, Jensen, what was it like collaborating with series creator Derek Haas on this project?

Jensen Ackles: I hate to call him a boss because I view him as a friend, but he is a wonderful tone setter. He literally just gave a group of crazy actors a playground to absolutely play, and he wrote such great in-depth characters, and a twisty storyline. It lent itself to the camaraderie that we all found ourselves in, and I can’t thank him enough. I can’t speak highly enough of that guy. He’s a wonderful person to work with. I hope I get to work with him for many years.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director and actor Josh Duhamel, as well as Kevin Dillon and Dan Bakkedahl about their work on ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening,’ making a sequel, their characters’ friendship, how they’ve changed since the first movie, and what Duhamel wanted to say about masculinity.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, Josh, at what point after making the original movie did you realize that there were more stories to tell about these characters?

Josh Duhamel: I had ideas for days. We have ideas for twelve of these if they’d let us. I knew that there was enough story inherent in just these guys’ relationships, and having a group of friends very similar to these guys, that there’s so many different directions you could go. I felt like we made a funny movie the first time and then I saw how people reacted to it. When we showed it in theaters I was like, “Oh my God, these guys have the same stupid sense of humor that I have.” They get it. I was really worried about it. I’m not kidding. So that was a relief to be honest. Then to see it do really well was even further affirmation that people like to be a little naughty. They like to laugh at things, maybe they’re not supposed to. We went even further on this one because there’s a lot of stuff out there that, to me, is funny. We wanted to do it in a way that wasn’t overly mean spirited. We didn’t want to be mean-spirited in any way. We wanted it to be good-natured, but we did want to poke some fun. We poke a lot of fun at ourselves and it’s the only way to break through this stuff is just to lighten up and not be so sensitive and have some laughs. That’s the main purpose of these movies.

MF: Dan, can you talk about the adventure these guys go on together to celebrate the life of their deceased friend?

Dan Bakkedahl: Well, I think what was really brilliant about this is that if we’re going to start on a down note, like, “Oh my God, one of our best friends just died,” it’s great that we built this, “Okay, we got a plan. It’s half-baked because it’s us.” Then, “Well, okay. Something comes in, but we’re going to stay on track. Okay, now we’re split up, but we’re going to stay on track. Okay, now we’ve all got terrible hangovers, but we’re going to stay on track.” We keep on the mission. There’s a lot of off ramps where we go off to get loaded or try to get laid or whatever our thing is, but ultimately we get back on it because it’s all about honoring this friend.

MF: Kevin, can you talk about how Doc has changed since the first movie and what it was like for you to reprise this character and reunite with the rest of the cast?

Kevin Dillon: Well, I love working with these guys. I had a great time the first time around. I feel like we all hit it off right away. I felt like, I don’t know how he’s really evolved. I don’t really know that. He’s devolving, I feel. He’s still Doc, but these guys don’t give him many credit for that. It’s like, “Oh, he’s a chiropractor, that don’t count.” But I think all he does is wait around for the Buddy Games. To be honest with you, this time the Buddy Games didn’t even really happen. It’s a death that brought us together this time. So we still only did one real Buddy Games with the original ‘Buddy Games.’ It was like an accidental Buddy Games. It wasn’t a planned Buddy Games. But yeah, I think that’s what he’s really waiting for.

MF: Josh, do you think any of the characters have grown or changed since the first film, or are they the same guys they’ve always been?

JD: Well, I like to think that Doc’s probably evolved the most because he was in a pretty dark place in the first one. True to form, we all sort of lifted them up. I got a group of friends that whenever one of us is down, everybody lifts them up. It’s no man left behind. So yeah, I guess I hadn’t thought a lot about how much we’ve evolved, but I think that when you lose somebody you love as much as we did Durfy, I think people’s true colors come out. That’s part of the evolution is even in the worst of times, these guys still show up for each other. I think that’s part of the growth that you see. But at the end of the day, they’re still dudes who want to have fun, who really, truly, I think as they get older, appreciate this friendship that much more.

MF: Finally, the film explores the idea of masculinity and what that is in 2023. Josh, what did you want to explore and say about the idea of masculinity with this movie?

JD: Well, we wanted to have some fun with the extreme stuff that’s out there right now. We didn’t do it in a way to be mean-spirited. We wanted it to be fun, and I’m hoping that even those that are extremely woke can look at this and go, “Okay, that’s pretty funny.” Because we’re still making fun of ourselves at the same time. So it’s like if we’re going to do it to you, we’re going to do it to ourselves too. In this day and age, I think that everybody is pretty damn sensitive and we just wanted to lighten it up a little bit. I wanted to make a movie that was unapologetic, that explored some things that I might be a little bit provocative or controversial and we did it. But I think we did it in a way that balances the line pretty well.

  • TV Review: ‘The Boys’ Season 3

Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell), Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Tomer Capone (Frenchie), Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko), Laz Alonso (Mother's Milk)

Debuting with the first three episodes on Prime Video today, ‘The Boys’ returns for its third season having lost none of its capacity to shock and delight in equal measure.

The show about dysfunctional superheroes – and the vigilantes who are dedicated to keeping them in check – is back in a more crowded market for such stories – James Gunn offered plenty of gore and chaos in ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Invincible’ unleashes animated mayhem with each successive episode.

‘The Boys’ follows a world in which superpowered people (or “supes”) – many of them the creation of the less-than-moral Vought corporation mingle with us regular folk, performing heroic acts and behaving much like movie stars for their adoring crowds. The wrinkle here though is, like some celebrities, they’re also extremely fallible souls, prone to bad behavior and selfish, abusive attitudes, and when you combine that with the ability to lift cars, fly or explode heads, it’s a very, very hazardous combination.

Vought views them as commodities, marketing tools to sell toys and other merchandise, producing movies around “The Seven” core characters. They’re pimped like DC or Marvel’s stable, making public appearances, and signing endorsement deals.

    Antony Starr (Homelander)
Antony Starr (Homelander). Credit: Courtesy of Prime Video. Copyright: Amazon Studios.

Prime among them is Homelander (Anthony Starr), who believes he’s god’s gift to the world, an emotionally stunted man-child who acts out and causes endless problems for those around him. Starr’s performance is pitch-perfect, smug, and entitled, preening and impervious (literally). There are hints of humanity under the surface, but this season he doubles down on the desperate need to be in control of everything around him.

A sweary ying to his yang is Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), the uncouth cockney leader of the rag-tag opposition group named in the title. The “boys” – plus Karen Fukuhara’s superpowered Kimiko – who all have their reason to dislike supes, and to hold grudges against them. Some, such as Laz Alonso’s Mother’s Milk, lost their parents to Supe activity, whereas Hughie (Jack Quaid, who began the show as the audience’s way into this conflict, (but is now firmly entrenched in it, not least because he’s dating Annie/Starlight, a superhero played by Erin Moriarty), saw his girlfriend exploded into bloody vapor thanks to the careless speedy actions of the Flash-like A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

As Butcher, Urban holds the vigilante side together, his character is a mix of his own foibles and insecurities, not least because last season he learned that his son was fathered by Homelander. Oh, and his wife died when said son tried to save her from a psychopathic Nazi supe, accidentally wounding his mother.

Season 3 kicks off with the characters in even more disarray – Homelander is facing challenges to his authority, which only serves to make him even angrier, while Billy confronts one of the eternal questions of the show – just how far are you willing to go to achieve your aims? And when does fighting the good fight become an obsessive quest that threatens everyone around you?

Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Antony Starr (Homelander)
(L to R) Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Antony Starr (Homelander). Credit: Courtesy of Prime Video. Copyright: Amazon Studios.

It’s no spoiler to say that this year Billy gets a real upgrade in his fight, (his glowing eyes are all over the trailer), but we’ll leave the specifics for you to enjoy. It all plays well into the show’s regular obsessions, especially if you ponder what happens when Butcher becomes the thing he hates, even if it’s temporary.

Yet with the space to tell its story (the show is eight episodes this season), ‘The Boys’ has never just been about Homelander and Butcher. Almost every character enjoys a relatively meaty storyline this year, whether it’s Kumiko dealing with her desire to lose her powers, charismatic veteran soldier Frenchie (Tomer Capone) trying to maintain his relationship with her while his past comes back to haunt him or Starlight diving into trying to take down Homelander from within her position on the Seven team.

There are moral compromises, bad decisions, terrible actions, and regrettable turns all over the place, with no one in this world entirely good or entirely bad (well, Homelander’s pretty much irretrievably awful at this point).

Of course, ‘The Boys’ is also still sticking to its house style, adapted from the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, itself unafraid to leapfrog over lines that most other stories would be too afraid to cross. If you’ve seen an episode (or, let’s be honest, a few minutes) of this show, you’ll know its propensity for blowing people up, hacking off limbs or causing other horrific injuries, and that continues in fine style here.

    Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy)
Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy). Credit: Courtesy of Prime Video. Copyright: Amazon Studios.

There is a moment within the first 10 minutes here that involves someone with the ability to shrink to minute size and another person’s… Well, that would be telling. Suffice to say, we would not suggest eating while the sequence occurs. In fact, that’s probably a good idea through most of the episodes, because a lot of bad stuff happens to various characters, some of it violent, some of it sexual. The commitment to startling vulgarity can sometimes be wearing, but the show balances that out by keeping the cast compelling and the writing fantastic.

Among the biggest developments this year is the introduction of Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles, who worked with ‘Boys’ co-show-runner Eric Kripke for years on long-running CW series ‘Supernatural’. Though he’s more hinted at initially, this twisted take on Captain America, a man that the country has come to view as a great hero who, when you meet him is certainly no Steve Rogers. He’s a drunken, foul-mouthed man out of time, but fits perfectly into the show and becomes a big plot driver for the season.

This is not a series for the faint of heart, or for anyone who prefers their superheroes squeaky clean. But for those who are willing to engage with it, to go with the (bloody, gross) flow, it remains one of the most entertaining and surprising shows out there.

  • ‘Supernatural’ Will End With 15th Season

‘Supernatural’ Will End With 15th Season

    The CW

Sam and Dean Winchester have died and come to back so life so often over the years, we’ve lost track. But now it’s really the end of the road for their long-running CW hit “Supernatural.”

Stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins made the announcement today that the show will (sob!) end with Season 15.

“Well, it’s official. One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in ‘Supernatural’ …does it?” Ackles wrote in an an Instagram post.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BvUuPGpgD7T/

The show debuted on September 13, 2005 on what was then The WB and then became a flagship series for the new CW network. It  currently ranks as the longest-running sci-fi/genre series in the history of American broadcast television. It’s the only show from the WB-era still on the air.

“We just told the crew that though we’re very very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last. Fifteen years of a show that has certainly changed my life, I know it’s changed these two guys’ life,” Ackles  said, referring to TV brother Padalecki and Collins, who joined the series in 2008 as Castiel.

“We just wanted you to hear from us that though we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big, grand finale of an institution,” Ackles said. “I will say this, a little word from Eric Kripke, the creator about this world and these characters, that in a show about family, it is amazing and it is the pride of his life that it became a family. So thank you guys for that.”

Several attempts to develop a spinoff of the show have crashed and burned, unfortunately. CW president Mark Pedowitz has said that he’s probably done trying to create a spinoff and chalked up the show’s success to Padalecki and Ackles.

The final season, which will run from 2019-2020, will be 20 episodes.

We’ll always think of Sam and Dean whenever a light flickers, a radio crackles, we stay at a ridiculously retro motel, or an Impala passes us on the road blasting AC/DC. Thanks for saving the world so many times, guys.

With “Arrow” also ending next year, it’s definitely the end of an era.

Get this man a shield, er, suit!

Jensen Ackles is best known for playing Dean Winchester on The CW’s “Supernatural.” But he also voiced the character of Jason Todd/Red Hood in the animated movie “Batman: Under the Red Hood.”

Ackles just shared a photo next to the Red Hood suit, staging an “awkward” meeting between his two alter egos:

It was just a cute dual character meet-up, but fans are now hopeful that this could lead to a live-action Jason Todd/Red Hood project for Jensen Ackles.

He is already part of The CW, which has its own huge Arrowverse of DC characters. Jason Todd is a DC character.

So there’s an obvious partnership opportunity there.

Or he could skip the small screen and go straight to whatever DC/Warner Bros. is ever doing with itself on the big screen. We already have the DC Extended Universe, plus the DC Universe new subscription streaming platform. And there’s some kind of new banner of projects separate from the DCEU where Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie is landing.

Long story short, there are plenty of places a Jason Todd/Red Hood project could land, if anyone wanted to make one.

That said, it looks like the DC Universe is already jumping on that train with “Titans,” with Curran Walters said to be playing Jason Todd/Red Hood in the upcoming streaming show.

THAT said, DC is no stranger to having multiple people play roles on different platforms.

THAT said, Jensen Ackles is 40-years-old, and some fans think he might be too old for this role.

THAT said, Robert Downey Jr. is 53 and he’s still crushing it as Iron Man — which he was cast in 10 years ago when he was in his early 40s. Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds is 41. Keanu “John Wick” Reeves is 53. Age is just a number, now more than ever.

For now, Jensen Ackles has “Supernatural.” Season 14 premieres October 11 on The CW.

Watch ‘Supernatural’ Stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles Go ‘Ghostbusters’ in Parody Video

    Supernatural Parody 2 still
    The Hillywood Show/YouTube

The break between “Supernatural” seasons just got more bearable: “The Hillywood Show” got stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki to appear in a video as their respective characters, Dean and Sam Winchester.

Called “Supernatural 2 Parody,” the hilarious video spoofs the long-running CW fantasy series by giving it some “Ghostbusters” flair. It follows the Winchester brothers (played by creator Hilly Hindi and and Osric Chau) as they go about their supernatural business, all while a revamped version of the “Ghostbusters” theme song plays. The lyrics were written by sisters Hilly and Hannah Hindi, who spoof the show to perfection.

The video and its song are plenty catchy on their own, but best of all, fans get to see some special appearances. As mentioned above, Ackles and Padalecki pop in, and they are also joined by their co-star Misha Collins (Castiel). Watch the parody below.

    Who ya gonna call? WINCHESTERS!

“Supernatural” returns for Season 14 on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
