“Hustlers” is inspired by a real-life story. Writer-director Lorene Scafaria based her adaptation on a 2015 New York magazine article by Jessica Pressler called “The Hustlers at Scores.” The story centers on a group of women working as strippers who came up with a scheme to steal from their wealthy clients.

“Hustlers” will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, and then open in theaters Sept. 13.

Just call Jennifer Lopez “The Godmother.”

The singer-slash-actress is set to star in STX’s upcoming project centering on real-life crime boss Griselda Blanco, Deadline reports. Lopez may also make her directorial debut, according to the publication’s sources. Either way, she’ll double as one of the producers of “The Godmother.”

The script comes from Regina Corrado and Terence Winter and tells the story of Blanco. She was born in poverty in Colombia and managed to become a high-ranking member of the infamous Medellín cartel. Lopez said she has been “forever fascinated” by Blanco’s story and “jumped at the chance to play her on screen.”

“She is all things we look for in storytelling and dynamic characters — notorious, ambitious, conniving, chilling,” Lopez said of Blanco. “In a genre dominated by legendary kingpins, I’m eager to shine a spotlight on this anti-hero.”

With “The Godmother,” Lopez and STX are teaming up for the third time. They previously had success together with “Second Act” and will soon debut “Hustlers” at the Toronto Film Festival. Lopez will produce “The Godmother” alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, and Julie Yorn. Executive producers will be Winter, Alex Pettyfer, Alex Brown, and Rick Yorn.

A real-life music sensation will play Jennifer Lopez‘s rock-star fiancé in the upcoming rom-com “Marry Me.” Colombian singer-songwriter and rapper Maluma has been cast in the role, Deadline reports. He joins both Lopez and Owen Wilson in the project.

News came in April that Lopez would star in the film and Wilson was in talks to join her. The story centers on pop star played by Lopez who decides to marry a random fan (Wilson) after finding out that her husband-to-be (Maluma) has been cheating on her. It’s based on Bobby Crosby’s graphic novel of the same name, and the script was adapted by John Rogers and Tami Sagher. Harper Dill did a rewrite, and Kat Coiro is set to direct.

Maluma has been active on the music scene for several years. He released his debut album, “Magia,” in 2012 and his most recent, “11:11,” came out earlier this year. He’s a Latin Grammy Award winner and he’ll now get a chance to make his mark on the big screen.

“Marry Me” has reportedly moved from STX to Universal, which happens to be the studio that originally landed it. Lopez is producing alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, and John Rogers. Willie Mercer, Alex Brown, and J.B. Roberts are the executive producers. So far, no release date has been announced.

The upcoming STXfilms rom-com “Marry Me” has two big-name leads.

Jennifer Lopez is officially on board, and Owen Wilson is set to join her, Variety reports. Wilson is in final talks to become Lopez’s leading man. The two will be directed by Kat Coiro.

“Marry Me” is based on Bobby Crosby’s graphic novel of the same name. It follows a famous pop star (Lopez) as she marries a random fan (Wilson) after finding out that her fiance cheated on her. John Rogers and Tami Sagher wrote the script, and Harper Dill did a rewrite.

Lopez’s role was “quite literally made for her,” according to STXfilms Chairman Adam Fogelson. He also shared excitement about Wilson’s casting, calling him “the perfect person to play opposite [Lopez].” The actress herself tweeted that she’s “excited for this one” once news broke Monday.

Both Lopez and Wilson have starred in a number of popular comedies over the course of their careers. Some of hers include “Second Act” and “The Wedding Planner.” Meanwhile, some of Wilson’s hits include “Father Figures” and “Wedding Crashers.”

“Marry Me” is Lopez’s third project with STXfilms, following “Second Act” and the upcoming “Hustlers.” She’s also reuniting with producers Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina. They are producing “Marry Me” with Lopez and Rogers. The film’s executive producers are Willie Mercer, Alex Brown, and J.B. Roberts, and Kate Vorhoff and Catherine Hagerdorn are set to oversee for STX.

“Marry Me” is expected to begin production in the fall.

The upcoming STX Films drama “Hustlers” is officially due out in theaters this fall.

Then, the “Second Act” star spilled her secret: “Hustlers” has been scheduled for release on Sept. 13.

The drama comes from writer and director Lorene Scafaria and is based on Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores.” Pressler described it as “a modern Robin Hood story.” It centers on a group of enterprising strippers who started stealing from their uber-wealthy clients. Lopez stars in the movie alongside Cardi B, Julia Stiles, Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, and Lili Reinhart.

  • Cardi B to Make Film Debut in ‘Hustlers’ With Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu

Cardi B to Make Film Debut in ‘Hustlers’ With Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu

    Recording Academy

After snagging a Grammy Award earlier this year, rapper Cardi B is set for another exciting first: Her film debut.

STXfilms announced on Tuesday that the musician is set to star in “Hustlers,” joining a ridiculously impressive roster that includes Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart (“Riverdale”), Keke Palmer, Julia Stiles, and Mercedes Ruehl (Best Supporting Actress winner for 1991’s “The Fisher King”). Mette Towley (“Cats”) and Trace Lysette (“Transparent”) are currently in negotiations for supporting roles.

“Hustlers,” inspired by a 2016 New York Magazine article, tells the story of a savvy group of former strip club employees — led by characters played by Lopez and Wu — who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. Collider has the scoop on some of the character details:

I’m told Cardi B will play Serena, one of Lopez’s best friends who becomes her close accomplice. Stiles will play a journalist who befriends Wu. Ruehl will play Mother, who runs the backstage operations at the strip club.

Lorene Scafaria (“The Meddler”) is directing, from her own screenplay. In a statement, the filmmaker praised the “dynamic group of women” in the “powerhouse cast,” and revealed that production is set to begin at the end of this week, on March 22.

In his own statement, STXfilms chairman Adam Fogelson noted that the company “could not have asked for a more exciting or talented lineup of performers to join our cast,” and promised that the film would be an “unexpected, entertaining and often shocking story.”

We can’t wait to see it all unfold, especially with all of these talented actresses on board.

2019 Oscars Reveal First Round of Presenters

    Warner Bros.

This year’s Oscars will mark the first time in three decades that the ceremony has gone without a host. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making sure that the event will still feature plenty of stars on stage.

Earlier this week, Oscars producer Donna Gigliotti and co-producer and director Glenn Weiss revealed the first round of presenters who will be announcing categories and handing out statuettes at the Academy Awards later this month. That group is:

Awkwafina, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Amandla Stenberg, Charlize Theron, Tessa Thompson, and Constance Wu.

We have to hand it to producers: That’s a pretty solid list of people. We’re especially excited to see what kind of witty banter Fey, Poehler, and Rudolph deliver. (Perhaps a preview of their upcoming Netflix film, “Wine Country”?)

According to the producers, the show’s aim is to put the focus squarely on the honored films, and the diversity that they represent in the industry at large.

“The Oscar nominees have generated tremendous worldwide attention through their captivating stories, achievements and performances,” Gigliotti and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We want to give the public an opportunity to once again experience the moments that have moved us all. It is a celebration of our universal love of movies.”

The 91st annual Oscars will air on Sunday, February 24 on ABC.

  • ‘Second Act’ Trailer: Jennifer Lopez Sets Herself up for Success (and Maybe Disaster)

    Second Act trailer still
    STXfilms via YouTube

    What’s a little white lie?

Well, it might be Jennifer Lopez‘s undoing in her new comedy, “Second Act.” STX Entertainment released the trailer Thursday, and it shows Lopez as Maya, an ambitious woman who hasn’t accomplished what she wants to in her career. When she gets the chance to take the job of her dreams, she jumps at it. The problem, as we see in the trailer, is that her rise is based on a lie.

Directed by Peter Segal, the comedy has been likened to “Working Girl” and another Lopez-starring flick, “Maid in Manhattan.” It’s a Cinderella story for Lopez’s character — one that likely involves everything coming crashing down at some point. Somehow, we suspect she’ll recover when it does and we’ll learn an inspiring lesson along the way.

Along with Lopez, the movie has some other big-name actors. Her character’s best friend, Joan, is played by Leah Remini, while Milo Ventimiglia portrays her love interest, Trey. The film also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Annaleigh Ashford, Freddie Stroma, Dan Bucatinsky, and Treat Williams.

“Second Act” is set to hit theaters Nov. 21.

  • 13 Things You Never Knew About ‘Out of Sight’

It’s been 20 years since director Steven Soderbergh delivered what many consider to be his crowning achievement in “Out of Sight.”

This comedic caper, an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel, did justice to its source material and kicked off a very fruitful partnership between Soderbergh and star George Clooney. That’s a milestone worth celebrating, so enjoy these fun facts you might not have known about “Out of Sight.”
    1. Michael Keaton‘s character, FBI Agent Ray Nicolette, is the same one he played in 1997’s “Jackie Brown.” Both “Out of Sight” and “Jackie Brown” are adapted from Leonard novels.

    2. Among other distinctions, “Out of Sight” is notable for being the first movie to feature two actors who have previously played Batman.
    3. Jennifer Lopez spent ten weeks training with an actual FBI agent in order to learn how to properly fire her weapons in the film.

    4. In the scene where Karen examines a mugshot of Jack and says, “He doesn’t even look like that,” the photograph is actually of Clooney’s character from 1996’s “From Dusk Till Dawn.”
    5. Soderbergh strongly considering casting Sandra Bullock as Karen. He told Mr. Showbiz, “What happened was, I spent some time with [Clooney and Bullock] and they actually did have great chemistry. But it was for the wrong movie. They really should do a movie together, but it was not Elmore Leonard energy.” (The two would go on to later star in 2013’s “Gravity.”)

    6. Author Elmore Leonard once said that he envisioned either Sean Connery or Jack Nicholson playing the role of Jack Foley when he sold the rights to the novel.
    7. The scenes set in Florida prison were actually shot at Angola Prison in Louisiana, and 500 actual convicted felons were used as background extras.

    8. The Karen Sisco character was eventually given her own TV series on ABC in 2003 with Carla Gugino taking over the role. Unfortunately, the series was canceled after only seven episodes.
    9. Soderbergh originally shot the film’s most famous scene, the car trunk sequence, as one long take, but after test audiences responded poorly to the scene, he re-shot it in a different form. The original version is available as a bonus feature on the DVD.

    10. Soderbergh also did 45 takes of the scene.
    11. During their DVD commentary, Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank reveal that the cast improv’d a few memorable lines of dialogue. Example? The director and writer credit Don Cheadle for coming up with the line: “In a situation like this, there’s a high potentiality for the common motherf***er to bitch out.”
    12. Samuel L. Jackson reportedly filmed his cameo in the final scene for free. (Keaton also is said to have done his bit role at no charge, too.)

    13. “Out of Sight” topped Entertainment Weekly’s “50 Sexiest Movies Ever Made” list.
