  • Robin Wright Demanded (and Got) Same Pay as Kevin Spacey on ‘House of Cards’

Somewhere, Claire Underwood is approving this message with one of her crafty Mona Lisa smiles. “House of Cards,” not only sharing the stage with Kevin Spacey (even breaking the fourth wall with him in 2016’s recent Season 4) but also acting as an executive producer on the last 13 episodes, and director of seven from the past two seasons. Spacey, who plays President Frank Underwood, is also an executive producer on the show, but he hasn’t directed any episodes.

This is only relevant because actress Robin Wright just revealed she took a cue from her FLOTUS character and stepped up to demand equal pay for the Netflix series.

As the actress told the audience at the Rockefeller Foundation (via Huffington Post), “I was like, ‘I want to be paid the same as Kevin.’ It was the perfect paradigm. There are very few films or TV shows where the male, the patriarch, and the matriarch are equal. And they are in ‘House of Cards.’” She added, “I was looking at the statistics and Claire Underwood’s character was more popular than [Frank’s] for a period of time. So I capitalized on it. I was like, ‘You better pay me or I’m going to go public.’” She smiled. “And they did.”

According to HuffPost, Spacey was making around $500K per episode before Season 3 debuted in 2014. His pay was said to potentially increase to $1 million, making him one of the highest-paid TV or streaming actors. They noted that, last year, Forbes listed Robin Wright’s HoC earnings at $5.5 million, which breaks down to around $420K an episode.

Season 4 was a good time for Robin to take a stand, since Claire was a fully equal lead character, as opposed to her more supporting role in the first couple of seasons. Plus, Robin had double duty as director for four 2016 episodes, which may or may not have been a factor in the overall package. Either way, good for her for standing up for her worth, threatening to go public if they said no (SUCH an Underwood move) and then sharing the results with the class. Maybe she’ll inspire other leading ladies to do the same.

  • 20 TV Shows You Say You’ll Watch (But Never Do)

%Slideshow-366096% Your friends are always telling you that you have to watch “House of Cards,” “The Wire,” “The Americans,” or another critically-acclaimed show you haven’t seen. And you’d like to, you really would.

But we know all the reasons why you’re not: You don’t have Showtime (or HBO or Netflix), or you can’t fit one more show into your DVR, or, honestly, you’d rather just watch a “Friends” rerun for the 10th time.

Here are some of those shows you’ve been meaning to watch. Just as soon as you get time. And nothing else is on. Which is pretty much never.

  • Tense ‘House of Cards’ Season 4 Trailer Teases Frank vs Claire Horror

In the battle of President Frank Underwood (“House of Cards” audience.

Have you seen the 1989 movie “The War of the Roses”? Based on the official “House of Cards” Season 4 trailer, it looks like a more strategic, violent, and high-stakes version is headed our way this season.

Season 3 ended with Claire finally walking out on Frank, and oh man is he pissed. The music and imagery in the trailer are so tense this could easily be a horror film.

Claire: “I saw a future. Our future.”
Frank: “We had a future until you started destroying it.”

Yep, Mom and Dad are fighting — and it’s awesome! They don’t call this show “House of Cards” for nothing. It took three seasons for the Underwoods to get to the White House and now the house is starting to collapse from greed, ambition, and resentment.

Frank is always at his best when he and Claire are on the same side, but Claire is sick of being his Lady Macbeth. She wants to be Macbeth. Frank took for granted that he could keep using her for his own gain, not quite appreciating that — at this point, with her current popularity as he campaigns for president — he needs her more than she needs him. She is now in a position of power and she is playing her own aces while she has them. But will she play her cards right, and what happens when it’s all on the table?

The Underwoods can do more damage to each other than any outsider ever could, so if they start turning on each other it is *WIN* for us. However, the trailer shows more than just Frank and Claire. We see many returning faces, a lot more mayhem, and some of the new characters headed our way.

“House of Cards” drops March 4 on Netflix and you really should catch up on the first three seasons before binge-ing this one. [knock knock]

  • ‘House of Cards’ Season 4 Promo, Release Date Revealed

FU, 2016! That’s the first message from President Frank Underwood to the nation, as issued during the GOP Debate Tuesday night. Yep, “House of Cards” is almost ready to return to us, and the Netflix series is now in full campaign mode — issuing promos, updating the FU website, and getting us pumped for Season 4, which premieres March 4, 2016. That’s a little too far away for our liking, but oh well.

He’s only just getting started — which sounds pretty ominous for the country. The “House of Cards” TV spot was one of the debate highlights, and we’re looking forward to more ahead.

Star Kevin Spacey had just tweeted about the near-end of Season 4 filming, then the official HoC site teased the announcement coming during the debate.

Kevin Spacey was recently at a Global Financial Leadership Conference in Naples, Florida, and even though he stopped short of teasing any future “House of Cards” plot points, he did say this: “We should not give away the story lines. We have to accept that we live in a nonspoiler generation. There’s people who haven’t seen Season 1. I will simply say this. If there are events that happen on the show, people get what they (expletive) deserve.”

Nice! Now we just have to wait three months to see who gets what he or she (expletive) deserves in Season 4.

  • Neve Campbell Joins ‘House of Cards’ Season 4 in Major Mystery Role

That “Party of Five” alum hasn’t been a TV series regular in many moons — just showing up in one or two episodes of shows from “Mad Men” to “Grey’s Anatomy” — but she signed up for a big role on Season 4 of “House of Cards.”

Deadline revealed Campbell as the newest series regular, saying her role was being kept a secret. However, there was just scoop about a young couple joining Season 4 as a mirror image of President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and First Lady Claire (Robin Wright). Is Neve Campbell, perhaps, the female half of that younger power couple? Maybe. Maybe not.

“House of Cards” Season 4 will premiere in 2016 — probably February, as usual — and will at least partly focus on how Claire … but wait. No spoilers, in case you aren’t caught up yet. This show is definitely binge-worthy, so get yourself up-to-date on Netflix and prepare for the welcome addition of Neve Campbell. Is it wrong to hope she plays someone a bit shady, to give Frank a taste of his own medicine?

  • ‘House of Cards’ Season 4 Spoilers: New Couple to Rival Frank and Claire?

_DSC7964.NEF“House of Cards” ended Season 3 on a dramatic cliffhanger when it comes to President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and First Lady to Leave a President Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). What’s coming in 2016’s Season 4?

TVLine just shared some intriguing scoop:

Word around the White House is that House of Cards Season 4 will introduce a couple who are the mirror image of Frank and Claire, only younger and (possibly) more British.”

Hmmm. Sounds like they’re going for something like the Blairs, if this couple does end up British. A British prime minister (or British anyone) couldn’t directly threaten Frank’s presidential campaign, but it sounds like maybe these two could be Team Underwood rivals, especially if their union is stronger than Frank’s and Claire’s. Then again, Frank and Claire are so competitive that this might prompt them to join forces again, as a reminder of how strong they were together. But we’re getting ahead of the game; for all we know, this (possibly) British couple isn’t meant to rival our duo, and the last we saw, there is no duo to rival.

“House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon talked to HuffPost Live last month, refusing to share spoilers but reminding us what’s likely to be covered in Season 4:

All we know is that Claire said that she’s leaving and we saw her walk out of that frame. So the big question is, ‘What now?’ If the marriage seems to be on the rocks … the natural questions are, ‘Are Frank and Claire going to get back together, or are they not?’ ‘What does it look like when they are not working together and is that what we’re going to see?’”

    Watch him talk about it:

Season 3 heavily hinted to Claire being a good candidate for president herself, even with her lack of experience. So we have to throw that into the mix, along with questions on the marriage and this new couple. And we’re always questioning what’s up with Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), the most murderous Chief of Staff in history … or so we hope.

Every season of “House of Cards” has premiered its 13 episodes in February, so we’re expecting Season 4 to arrive in February 2016.

  • Best of Late Night TV: New Bachelorettes Britt and Kaitlyn Dump Jimmy Kimmel, Kevin Spacey Does Impressions (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

On Monday night, ABC revealed that “The Bachelorette” will have two rosemistresses for the first time in the show’s history. (There were two Bachelors at one time, on Byron Velvick’s season, and the women of the house voted early on to pick one to stay.) Jimmy Kimmel sat down with the two new bachelorettes: Kaitlyn Bristowe and Britt Nilsson. Jimmy grilled them on what will happen (they’re not sure of the details yet), and what happens if they like the same guy. Jimmy also had them practice dumping a guy. Love when Kaitlyn dumped Jimmy for Guillermo, and Britt pulled the Matt Damon card on Jimmy and slapped him. Bette Midler was also on JKL and tucked her feet up on the couch. She looks amazing. She talked about starting in radio, although she didn’t get to be on the air at first, and her career from there. She was fired from a bunch of retail jobs along the way. It’s a good thing she can perform! The stage is her home, she said, but she won’t do the huge stage shows anymore. However, she did sing Kim Kardashian’s tweets. It’s amazing. Watch.
Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and Conan O’Brien all had repeats on Monday, but David Letterman was up and running, and he talked to “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey and the new Cinderella, “Downtown Abbey’s” Lily James.

Kevin and Dave talked about how, the last time they talked, Dave was confused about Twitter and thought you had to pay for it. Kevin wanted to make it clear that you don’t pay for Twitter but you do pay for Netflix. If you pay for Twitter, someone is ripping you off. If you don’t pay for Netflix, you’re ripping Kevin off. Haha. Kevin also talked about his theater project in the Middle East, working with young, emerging talent. He said you can sometimes accomplish things artistically and culturally that you can’t do politically. Interesting talk. Kevin also did his Jack Lemmon and Johnny Carson impressions. Jack was a huge mentor for Kevin, and they eventually worked on four projects together, including the amazing “Glengarry Glen Ross.” Kevin Spacey is everything. He should host one of these things someday. Lily said she’s only rarely recognized for “Downton Abbey.” She told the story of being stuck on a boat with a friend and she just said the words ‘Downtown Abbey’ and then it was chaos since apparently everyone wanted to hear about it. The video is too short – they don’t have enough from her.

  • 5 Reasons Claire Underwood Is the Real Hero of ‘House of Cards’

claire underwood in season 3 of House of CardsAfter months of waiting, “House of Cards” has finally returned. Frank and Claire Underwood have worked their way to the top of the political ladder as President and First Lady of the United States. Frank is the ostensible protagonist of the show, Machiavelli with a Southern accent and a penchant for speaking directly to the audience. However, Frank’s unceasing self-involvement can be tiring at times. He would never have succeeded without the help of his own Lady Macbeth, Claire, and it is she who is the real fascinating focal point of the show. Here are the reasons why Claire is the real hero (or antihero) of “House of Cards.”

(WARNING: Mild season 3 spoilers ahead.)

    1. She’s brave
Claire has had to make a series of difficult choices throughout the three seasons of “House of Cards,” often sacrificing personal comfort or happiness for political advancement. Admitting to having an abortion publicly definitely takes some guts, even if it is a politically calculated action. Claire always seems as if she is in control of the situation, even if this isn’t the case, and fights for what she believes she and her husband deserve, no matter the consequences.

    2. She’s ruthless
There’s a reason that Frank and Claire work so well together, and that’s largely because they are both so conniving. Frank is willing to kill to get what he wants, but Claire is willing to publicly shame and humiliate anyone who gets in her way. Probably the biggest example of this would be her cancellation of a pregnant former employee’s health insurance, depriving her of medicine so she’d drop a wrongful termination lawsuit. It’s an undoubtedly cruel move, but one so savvy that the viewer can only look on with amazement.

    3. She’s brilliant
Before becoming the wife of the Vice President, and then President, Claire was the CEO of the nonprofit Clean Water Initiative. But beyond being the leader of an impressive organization, Claire is also half the brains behind Frank’s political upward mobility. The two’s late-night cigarette plotting sessions are a testament to their mutual ingenuity, as they plan to tear the world down to get what they want.

    4. She has occasional doubts
Frank always seems to look upon his advancement with glee, and is willing to be ruthless without a second thought. This makes him an entertaining but not very complex character. Claire, on the other hand, is shown to have occasional doubts, or at the very least fleeting moments of regret. This can be seen in her decision to break off her relationship with Adam Galloway, who offered her happiness but not advancement. In the third season, it seems as if Claire is beginning to understand that she has sacrificed everything in her life for Frank’s political career. This recognition is a crucial aspect of the newest season, showcasing Claire’s doubts towards the life she has helped to create.

    5. She has amazing style
Claire’s fashionable sensibilities are actually a weapon, contributing to her aura of composed intelligence. She is always wearing a beautiful ensemble, which makes her seem even more intimidating and coldly aloof. Claire doesn’t want to be put on a pedestal, but she does want others to know that she’s smarter, better, and able to take them down. Her choice of clothes and hair are calculated moves, just like everything else in her life, designed to fill a person with awe.
