  • New ‘Enola Holmes 2’ Trailer

    tkkMwdr1

In 2020, Millie Bobby Brown proved she was more than just Eleven from ‘Stranger Things’ for Netflix, playing the character of Enola Holmes in the first movie named for her. It was a big success for the streaming service, and we already knew that a sequel was on the way.

At this year’s big TUDUM virtual event, Netflix offered the first full trailer for the new movie.

The first movie found Enola taking her first steps in her detective brothers’ path, using her genius intellect to figure out why her mother went missing and how it all ties into a conspiracy around a mysterious young lord.

Here’s the plot for this one… Fresh off the triumph of solving her first case, Enola Holmes (Brown) follows in the footsteps of her famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), and opens her own agency — only to find that life as a female detective-for-hire isn’t as easy as it seems.

Not only are there the sexist bores who don’t believe a young woman can run such a business, there are all the customers who show up hoping that she can connect them with Sherlock.

Resigned to accepting the cold realities of adulthood, she is about to close shop when a penniless matchstick girl offers Enola her first official job: to find her missing sister.

But this case proves to be far more puzzling than expected, as Enola is thrown into a dangerous new world — from London’s sinister factories and colorful music halls to the highest echelons of society and 221B Baker Street itself. Since the case appears to intersect with one that has been vexing her sibling.

As the sparks of a deadly conspiracy ignite, Enola must call upon the help of friends — and Sherlock himself — to unravel her mystery. The game, it seems, has found its feet again!

The cast this time includes the returning likes of Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge (as Tewkesbury), Susan Wokoma (as Edith) and Adeel Akhtar (as Lestrade). New the ensemble are ‘Dune’s Sharon Duncan-Brewster and ‘Sandman’s David Thewlis, who, from the looks of the trailer is a police chief not all that pleased to learn of Enola’s new status as a detective.

Behind the camera is the same team as the 2020 movie – director Harry Bradbeer and writer Jack Thorne, once again adapting Springer’s ‘Enola Holmes’ book series. And, of course, some credit goes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the Sherlock Holmes characters from which ‘Enola’ draws its inspiration.

This sequel promises to be just as packed with action and comedy, with more of the to-camera asides from Enola as she makes her way through this latest adventure.

‘Enola Holmes 2’ will debut on Netflix on November 4th.

Roughly two years ago, Netflix cemented its association with ‘Stranger Things’ star Millie Bobby Brown by having her star in and produce ‘Enola Holmes’, in which she plays Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister.

Co-starring Henry Cavill as Sherlock, Sam Claflin as eldest brother Mycroft and Helena Bonham Carter as her troubled mother Eudoria Holmes, it was a hit for the streaming service and naturally spawned talk of a sequel, not least because the movie adapted Nancy Springer’s book series, which meant other stories were available.

The first movie found Enola taking her first steps in her detective brothers’ path, using her genius intellect to figure out why her mother went missing and how it all ties into a conspiracy around a mysterious young lord.

And, of course, some credit goes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the Sherlock Holmes characters from which ‘Enola’ draws its inspiration.

Netflix and the filmmakers will, of course, be hoping to avoid the legal troubles that followed the release of the original. The Conan Doyle estate brought a lawsuit claiming that the “warmer” Sherlock as portrayed by Cavill is drawn from stories that are still under copyright. The case was eventually dismissed, though in a way that points to a settlement being paid. With luck, that’ll ensure that Enola stays out of the courtroom this time – at least, off the screen.

What to Watch this Week: ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League,’ ‘The Courier,’ ‘Happily,’ ‘Last Call,’ & more

If you’re curious as to what new movie this week might be best for you, Moviefone is here to help you find it and watch it. This week’s recommended films include a superhero do-over, a couple of deep dives into real-life scandals, a couple of stories about strained friendships, a gory anthology, and killer pants. Here are the movies we’re suggesting this week:

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (HBO Max)

Henry Cavill as Superman in 'Zack Snyder's Justice League'
Henry Cavill as Superman in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

Back in 2017, ‘Justice League’ was one of the most highly anticipated superhero movies of the year. Featuring most of DC Comic’s heavy-hitters, it landed with more of a thud than a bang. While fans were supportive overall, their knowledge over the troubled production that Zack Snyder had to leave due to family tragedy left them feeling like there had to be a better movie in there somewhere. Over the years, fans grumbled about #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, and Warner Bros studios listened. In a move rare for the entertainment industry, fans got their way, and Snyder got more cash to shoot more material the way he originally intended. The result is 242 minutes of superheroic goodness, with more complete backstories for the characters and entirely new scenes never before enjoyed by the hardworking fans.

Watch It If: You want to know more about The Flash and Cyborg, you’re excited to enjoy all the talk about “boxes” like it’s for the first time, and you’re  trying to make up for lost time watching the smash-smash-boom-boom that we haven’t gotten over the past year with all these film delays. Oh, AND you love f-bombs. There are WAY more in this version.

They end up with dark secrets at a retreat, surrounded by people who might want to put a stop to the lovey-dovey nonsense forever.

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal (Netflix)

Rick Singer, the subject of ‘Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal’

It was only a matter of time before this film was released, showing the tangled web of deceit woven by numerous parents of varying privilege to get their kids into college. Part documentary, part reenactment using actual FBI wiretaps, the film stars Matthew Modine as Rick Singer, the man who orchestrated admissions for numerous kids at Ivy league schools in exchange for payments adding up to $25 million over seven years. His method was to lie about the sports they were involved in and fake their SAT tests, and it was highly effective. It was also highly illegal, and most famously sent actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin to prison for approximately seventeen minutes.

Watch It If: You miss gossiping with the neighbors about people in the neighborhood you know are up to something, and if you want to feel smug satisfaction about your kid getting into college the old fashioned way–by putting off their essays until last minute and asking you for the application fee.

Watch It If: You’ve spent the entire last year in comfy pajama pants and want to feel completely justified in keeping that energy going, you love tongue-in-cheek comments about capitalism veiled in bonkers premises, or at any time you’ve said “these pants are killing me.”

  • Henry Cavill Is Ridiculously Ripped in First Trailer for ‘The Witcher’

Henry Cavill Is Ridiculously Ripped in First Trailer for ‘The Witcher’

    Netflix

If you were impressed with Henry Cavill’s “arm gun reload” in “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” stand back for his extra-pumped reveal in the first trailer for Netflix fantasy series “The Witcher.”

Cavill stars as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia who wields a mean sword and is handy with a rope. It’s based on the writings of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski (and not  the video games it also inspired, according to SyFy.)

In the trailer, we also meet the show’s other main characters.: Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, a sorceress and Geralt’s lover; and Freya Allan as Ciri, princess of a conquered nation and a potential Witcher herself.

“I’m a big gamer. I’ve played the games a lot,” Cavill told the crowd in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con today. “There was something about Geralt that struck a chord with me. He’s not your average hero. He’s a hard exterior, real-world type person and at the same time, deep down, he’s a real hero.”

Cavill also revealed that he did his own stunts for the series. “It’s very important for me that you know it’s Geralt and it’s not some guy doing Geralt stuff but it’s me in there,” he told the audience before showing a clip of his character cutting through a throng of armored soldiers.

Allan said of her character, “She’s had a very sheltered upbringing and as a result she’s incredibly naive to what the real world is. A huge part of her journey is putting herself in other people’s shoes. It’s clear from the start that she has this might and drive but she has to find a new kind of drive to look past the horrific things she sees. It’s a journey of discovery.”

No official release date has yet been announced for the series, only that it’s “coming soon.”

Superman Superfan Nicolas Cage: ‘I’d Make a Great Lex Luthor’

    Nicolas Cage in The Runner
    Alchemy

Should the DCEU dump Jesse Eisenberg for Nicolas Cage as the next Lex Luthor? Or maybe add a Nicolas Cage Luthor to a future spinoff movie with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker?

    Dare we dream?

Nicolas Cage is known to be a massive Superman fan. He named one of his sons Kal-El, in honor of Superman’s birth name. He sold a copy of Superan’s debut comic for a record $2.1 million. He was supposed to play Clark Kent in Tim Burton’s “Superman Lives.” He finally did get to voice Superman in “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies,” which opened this past summer. But, at age 54, he has yet to play the superhero on screen.

Henry Cavill is possibly out at as the DCEU’s Superman, but Nicolas Cage isn’t interested in picking up his cape. Not anymore.

Cage just talked to The Guardian while promoting his new film “Mandy,” and the reporter mentioned an online campaign to make him the next Superman:

“Oh, I think my Superman days are long gone,” he laughs with a little pat of his belly. He would be an amazing villain in it, I reply. His eyes light up. “Oh, that would be GREAT! I’d make a great Lex Luthor!”

Yes. He could go Full Cage as Lex Luthor.

When he was announced to voice “Teen Titans” we floated the idea of Nic as the DC world’s next Lex Luthor. Crazy minds think alike. There’s no saying DC *has* to go younger with the new Man of Steel (if there is one) so it’s still possible Cage could be an older Superman. If not in the DC Extended Universe, maybe under the same separate banner that is turning Joaquin Phoenix into the “Joker.”

Imagine Joaquin Phoenix and Nicolas Cage hamming it up in the same supervillain film. We don’t even deserve it.

Lex Luthor has been played by several actors on TV andin films, and voiced in animation or games. At this point, Jesse Eisenberg is the DCEU’s young Lex, appearing in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and (briefly) “Justice League.” Gene Hackman played Luthor in several movies with Superman Christopher Reeve, and Kevin Spacey had the role in “Superman Returns” opposite Brandon Routh.

What do you hope DC does with the character next?

Now There’s a Rumor Bond Producers Want Henry Cavill as Next 007

Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Henry Cavill
    Paramount Pictures

The name’s Kent, Clark Ke — er, Bond, James Bond.

If Henry Cavill is done as Superman, maybe he can start as 007? Or not. You can’t trust a single rumor about the James Bond world. It’s a sea of speculation and then you turn around and Cary Fukunaga is suddenly director.

But if “Bond 25” can still attract top name talent like Fukunaga, there’s clearly still life in that shaken martini.

So now we return to the other rumors — who might replace Daniel Craig after “Bond 25.” Everyone under the sun has been mentioned at one time or another, including Henry Cavill.

Now gossip site Crazy Days and Nights has revived the Cavill rumor with a revealed Blind Item:

    Blind Items Revealed #5
The producers of this long running franchise don’t care at all about the cloud swirling around the head of this foreign born former superhero. They want to cast him as their next replacement.

    Henry Cavill/James Bond

Do they? Maybe. But don’t take it from this rumor any more than you’d take the Idris Elba rumors that Idris Elba keeps trying to shoot down.

It’s clear the producers are busy with the current movie, which just moved its release date to accommodate the new director. We can go back to serious speculation when “Bond 25” is finished; by then, the producers may even have an official announcement on the new person.

They may want to surprise us, like they did with Danny Boyle and then Cary Fukunaga. Or we could indeed get Henry Cavill, or one of the other million names recycled over the past few years. No matter who is picked as the new James Bond, there will be complaints. There were complaints about Daniel Craig, too. (Remember the blond Bond dismay?)

“Bond 25” now has a release date of February 14, 2020. Yes, Valentine’s Day. If Henry Cavill takes the producers to the premiere as his date, then maybe we’ll start to believe this rumor.
