  • First ‘Hellboy’ Trailer Introduces David Harbour as the Red Half-Demon

First ‘Hellboy’ Trailer Introduces David Harbour as the Red Half-Demon

    Dark Horse Entertainment

    Meet the new Hellboy.

The first trailer for the big-screen reboot of the comics character is here, with David Harbour in the titular role of the big, red half-demon with a gigantic, smash-tastic right arm.

He’s been trained to kick criminal ass, take names and shoot bad guys right in the face. “You made me a damn weapon,” Hellboy tells adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane).

The reboot is co-written by comics creator Mike Mignola and directed by Neil Marshall (“The Descent”). It also stars Daniel Dae Kim as sidekick Ben Daimio and Milla Jovovich as Nimue, a medieval British sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.

The tone of the trailer is more light-hearted and quippy than the 2004 film and 2008 sequel written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman. The reboot will have to fill some very big shoes (uh, very large right-hand glove), since fans pretty much worship del Toro’s version of the iconic character.

“Hellboy” opens in theaters April 12.

  • New ‘Hellboy’ Posters Arrive Before Trailer Drops This Week

New ‘Hellboy’ Posters Arrive Before Trailer Drops This Week

    Dark Horse Entertainment

Fans who’ve been dying for more sneak peeks at the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot are about to have a hell of a week: A trailer for the film — which features “Stranger Things” star David Harbour in the title role — is finally dropping in a few days, and two new posters have also been revealed.

IGN confirmed that the first “Hellboy” trailer will make its debut on Thursday, and also debuted a new one-sheet from the flick. Like the previous poster, this imagery is embracing the hero’s unshorn horns — an atypical look for the demon that hints at some pretty intense plot developments in the new film.

    Dark Horse Entertainment via IGN

Here’s the breakdown (with potential SPOILERS from the “Hellboy” comics), according to IGN:

This is the first image for Hellboy that shows him in his transformed Anung Un Rama look with his horns and fiery crown in full view, while earlier teases for the movie have shown Hellboy with his sawed off horns as we normally see him, or with the full horns partially obscured.

Hellboy might fight to protect the world against terrible fantastical creatures, but we know from the comics that it’s always been his destiny to live up to his Anung Un Rama birth name and use his bulky Right Hand of Doom to unlock a prison holding apocalypse-bringing monsters. That is all a fancy way to say that if Hellboy has his horns and crown of flame in the movie, then things are probably going to get really bad in a really epic way.

    Sounds demonically delightful.

And speaking of epic, Harbour himself shared a motion poster for the film, featuring his character communing with some hellish lightning.

According to the actor, the film will showcase “one Big Red Flower, beast of the apocalypse, The right hand of doom, the buttkicker of the BPRD, and a host of all kinds of big ole giants and witches and fairies and janky overgrown ugly pig monsters from your nightmares.” We’re sold.

“Hellboy” hits theaters on April 12.

  • ‘Hellboy’ Embraces His Horns in ‘Legendary’ New Poster

‘Hellboy’ Embraces His Horns in ‘Legendary’ New Poster

    Dark Horse Entertainment

As a new poster for the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot declares, this film is going to be legendary AF.

The stunning one-sheet, debuted by Entertainment Weekly, features the titular demon-turned-monster hunter in all his horned glory, a departure from his usual look. Though the character (played in this version by “Stranger Things” star David Harbour) is typically depicted with his horns shaved down, in an attempt to distance himself from his demonic origins, here, he’s proudly letting his freak flag fly.

    Summit Entertainment via Entertainment Weekly

Embracing his true nature is part of what makes this iteration of “Hellboy” different from the original 2004 and 2008 films, which starred Ron Perlman as the hero. According to Harbour, his Hellboy leans more into a dual personality — both confident and insecure — and that’s certainly true of the character’s two very different looks.

We can’t wait to see Harbour let Hellboy’s freak flag fly. If this poster is any indication, fans are in for a real treat.

Unfortunately, the film’s debut is still a way’s off: Its release date has been pushed from January to April 2019. Here’s hoping Lionsgate will bless fans with more sneak peeks before then.

  • ‘Hellboy’ Reboot With David Harbour Delayed 3 Months

‘Hellboy’ Reboot With David Harbour Delayed 3 Months

    “Hellboy” is cooling his heels.

Summit Entertainment announced that its reboot of the “Hellboy” franchise starring David Harbour has been delayed a few months, from January 11, 2019 to a new release date of April 12, 2019.

That means it’ll compete directly against Robert Downey Jr.’s “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle” and open just a week after the DC superhero movie “Shazam.”

Neil Marshall will direct a script from the comics creator Mike Mignola. Harbour plays the titular, angsty character, while Milla Jovovich is the main villain. Ian McShane plays Professor Bloom and Daniel Dae Kim rounds out the caset as Major Ben Daimio.

Harbour talked earlier this year about how his take on the character will be different from Ron Perlman, who played Hellboy in the 2004 movie and 2008 sequel.

“There’s a different approach because I sort of highlight different things, I think, than Ron does,” he said. “Ron sort of embraces this machismo in himself and in Hellboy, and I really like it and it’s super fun and it’s a super fun performance, but I think Hellboy has a certain psycho dynamic where occasionally he has to prove that he’s the lion, has to roar, and I think he struggles with his own masculinity.”

  • ‘Hellboy’ Reboot Now Has a Release Date

The “Hellboy” reboot, with David Harbour as the big red guy, has finally set an official release date: January 11, 2019.

That’s actually the same date that Empire reported in September, but Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment denied it at the time. Original announcements pegged the movie as coming out sometime in 2018.

“Stranger Things” star Harbour is taking over the lead role from Ron Perlman and “The Descent”‘s Neil Marshall is directing. Milla Jovovich and Daniel Dae Kim co-star in the reboot, titled “Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen.” Ian McShane (“American Gods”) will play Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Broom.

January isn’t typically a great month to release a big comic-book movie. The first “Hellboy” movie opened on April 4, 2004 and its sequel “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” on July 11, 2008.

  • Daniel Dae Kim Bonds With New ‘Friend’ Ed Skrein After ‘Hellboy’ Recasting

The “Hellboy” casting controversy has a few silver linings, including introducing two new friends — and revealing the correct pronunciation of Ed Skrein‘s last name.

    So that’s something.

As you probably know, Ed Skrein was initially cast as military man Ben Daimio, a Japanese-American character in the “Hellboy” comics. After whitewashing backlash, Skrein stepped down, posting that he was unaware when accepting the role that the Daimio was of mixed Asian heritage. He respected that “representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people” and he wanted to make room for the role to be “cast appropriately.”

Not too long after that, “Hellboy” cast Daniel Dae Kim, a recent alum of “Hawaii Five-0.” Kim is Korean-American — which is not the same as Japanese-American, as many fans jumped in to point out. But after the re-casting, Kim praised Skrein “for championing the notion that Asian characters should be played by Asian or Asian American actors. He could not have addressed the issue more elegantly and I remain indebted to him for his strength of character.”

And now it looks like the two dudes have bonded over their shared “Hellboy” experience, with DDK posting this photo with his new friend:

Ed Skrein-Rhymes-With-Wine is no stranger to recastings, losing the role of Daario Naaharis on “Game of Thrones” to Michiel Huisman for what he later said were “political” reasons.

“Hellboy” stars David Harbour in the title role — check out the first look of him here — and it’ll show up in theaters at some point in 2018.

  • First Photo of David Harbour’s ‘Hellboy’ Gives Fans Déjà Vu

Momentum Pictures With The Cinema Society Host A Screening Of 'Fun Mom Dinner'- After PartyHell yeah. The new “Stranger Things” chief David Harbour just launched an official Twitter account to show off the first photo of its star.

The result looks a lot like the cigar-chomping graphic novel character — and also the Ron Perlman version in director Guillermo Del Toro‘s films.

Fans noticed the similarities to Perlman’s Hellboy, and many were fine about it:

“Hellboy,” directed by Neil Marshall, also stars Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, and now officially Daniel Dae Kim in the role Ed Skrein exited. It’s scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2018.

  • Ed Skrein Exits ‘Hellboy’ Reboot After Whitewashing Controversy: ‘I Must Do What Is Right’

Into Film Awards 2017 - VIP Reception & Inside CeremonyFollowing yet another Hollywood whitewashing controversy, actor Ed Skrein is stepping down from the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot.

In a lengthy statement posted to his social media accounts, Skrein explained that when he accepted the role of Major Ben Daimio, he was “unaware” that the character was “of mixed Asian heritage.” In the “Hellboy” comics, Daimio is a Japanese-American former Marine who works alongside the titular hero at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Following news of Skrein’s casting as the character, there was once again an outcry over whitewashing, which has been prevalent lately in big studio flicks like “Doctor Strange” and “Ghost in the Shell.” It was an accusation the actor said he took quite seriously.

A post shared by Ed Skrein (@edskrein) on

“There has been intense conversation and understandable upset since that [casting] announcement, and I must do what I feel is right,” Skrein’s statement said. “It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority voices in the Arts. I feel it is important to honour and respect that. Therefore I have decided to step down so the role can be cast appropriately.”

The actor also noted that he hoped his stepping down would “make a difference.” It looks like it already has: studio Lionsgate has released a statement in support of Skrein, and said it will recast the role with an Asian actor.

    Lionsgate’s full statement said:

Ed came to us and felt very strongly about this. We fully support his unselfish decision. It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material.

Mike Mignola, the creator of the “Hellboy” comics, also approved of Skrein’s decision, thanking the actor on Twitter and commenting, “very nicely done.”

“Hellboy,” which features David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) as the title star, is currently slated for release sometime in 2018.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Star David Harbour Is the New Hellboy

David HarbourHellboy is coming back — but without star Ron Perlman and director Guillermo Del Toro.

The creator of the big red guy, Mike Mignola, shared the news yesterday that “Stranger Things” star David Harbour will be playing the demonic, cigar-chomping hero. Neil Marshall, who gave us the ultra-gory “The Descent” and “Dog Soldiers” will be directing. And one more tidbit: The movie will be rated R, unlike the first two films, which were both rated PG-13.

Harbour was previously rumored to take on a different comic-book role, that of Cable in “Deadpool 2,” but that went to Josh Brolin.

According to THR, the film has a working title of “Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.” Neither Del Toro or Ron Perlman will be involved in the project.

What’s Del Toro doing instead? He’s currently working on “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” which opens February 23, 2018. Perlman recently headlined the Amazon series “Hand of God.”

  • Guillermo del Toro Announces ‘Hellboy 3’ Is 100 Percent Not Happening

    Hellboy“Hellboy” is dead.

Hopes for “Hellboy 3” were fanned by director Guillermo del Toro a few weeks ago when he posted a poll on Twitter to gauge fan interest. After receiving positive feedback, del Toro indicated he would meet with star Ron Perlman and comic creator Mike Mingola to talk about the sequel. Unfortunately, as the director tweeted today, that meeting apparently resulted in dousing the “Hellboy 3” fire:

The third film was always a long-shot. The original “Hellboy” in 2004 and the 2008 follow-up “Hellboy II: the Golden Army” were only modest hits, and there’s the added complicated that the former was produced by Sony while the latter came from Universal.

Perlman also commented on the demise of the project, with his usual cheekiness:
