  • Jack Kesy to Play the New Hellboy

The news broke last week that a new ‘Hellboy’ movie is in the works, which would be separate from either Guillermo del Toro’s films or the 2019 reboot that starred David Harbour as the big, red title character.

    lzAkSrVlwyhGYWQ8v6ihr3

Now we know –– originally via Giant Freakin’ Robot but since confirmed by production company Millennium Media –– that Jack Kesy is the new Hellboy for this latest movie. He will be playing a younger version of the character than we’ve seen before.

Here’s what Millennium Co-President Jonathan Yunger has to say about the casting:

“Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy. I was very impressed with him while working together on ‘The Outpost.’”

David Harbour as Hellboy in 2019's 'Hellboy.'
David Harbour as Hellboy in 2019’s ‘Hellboy.’

What is the next ‘Hellboy’ movie?

The new film has comic book creator Mike Mignola writing the script for the first time (he contributed the story to the 2004 Guillermo del Toro version––more on that down below), along with Christopher Golden, who works on the comics at Dark Horse with him. They’ve adapted comics run ‘The Crooked Man’ for the screenplay.

The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

In the comic, The Crooked Man was an eighteenth-century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil.

And in the director’s chair this time? Brian Taylor, who along with regular collaborator Mark Neveldine, has made the likes of ‘Crank’ and its sequel, plus ‘Mom and Dad’ which he directed solo. He also has comic book adaptation experience thanks to ‘Jonah Hex’ and ‘Ghost Rider’ sequel’ Spirit of Vengeance’.

Shooting is reportedly scheduled to kick off in Bulgaria next month, but nothing has been released as to who will play the main character.

Says Millennium Media’s President Jeffrey Greenstein,

“‘The Crooked Man’ is a departure from all previous ‘Hellboy’ films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form. This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways. Brian Taylor is an expert across the board, and I couldn’t think of a better person to bring this story to life to show our audience this different and original Hellboy slate of films.”

What movies has Jack Kesy been in?

You might know Kesy from the likes of ‘Deadpool 2’, where he played Black Tom, a role that was originally supposed to be a bigger antagonist but got cut down in editing.

Kesy has also been seen in the ‘Baywatch’ movie opposite Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, in ‘Without Remorse’ and in war action drama ’12 Strong’. And on TV, he’s appeared in ‘Claws’ and ‘The Strain’.

David Harbour as Hellboy in 2019’s ‘Hellboy.’

Back in 2019, we got the latest attempt to bring Mike Mignola’s ‘Hellboy’ comics to theaters. The character, a demonic creature who has been recruited to help the fight against evil––and who boasts both a snappy wit and a giant red fist in addition to his red, rocky appearance––was played there by ‘Stranger ThingsDavid Harbour, with Neil Marshall, the British director behind ‘The Descent’ and ‘Doomsday’ overseeing the movie.

Unfortunately for all involved, it only made $55 million globally at the box office on a $50 million budget, which appeared to scupper Millennium Films’ plan for a new franchise based on the character.

Undaunted, the company is trying again, putting together a new movie with some different players behind the scenes, according to a report from Discussing Film, which has since been confirmed by Deadline.

What’s happening with Guillermo del Toro’s version?

Unfortunately for fans of Guillermo del Toro’s two ‘Hellboy’ movies, which were released in 2004 and 2008 respectively, the latest development means we may never get to see the director’s third film, which he’d planned to wrap up a trilogy.

Del Toro has also moved on to many other projects, including the likes of the Oscar-nominated ‘Pinocchio’ from this year, so we can at least look forward to plenty of films from him, even if that third ‘Hellboy’ remains strictly on wish lists for now.

    NEW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

    ‘Hellboy’ (July 23)

Neil Marshall’s new take on the beloved comics character stars David Harbour of “Stranger Things” as the rough-around-the-edges half-demon. Chock-full of violence, gore, and F-bombs, the movie traces Hellboy’s origin story and touches on his training by adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane). Now all grown up (and with a mouth to prove it) Hellboy and his giant, smashing arm join the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to defeat the medieval sorceress Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich).

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes deleted scenes and a three-part making-of documentary. Watch an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray below:

    ‘Missing Link’ (July 23)

The newest offering from LAIKA (the animation studio behind “Coraline” and “The Boxtrolls”) is back with this animated delight, which follows a Bigfoot-type creature named Mr. Link (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) who recruits a fearless explorer (Hugh Jackman) to help him find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), they encounter their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes making-of featurettes. Watch an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray below:

    ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ (July 23)

As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, the compassionate doctor Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious past.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 23 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus content includes making-of featurettes.

‘1984’ (July 23): The film adaptation of George Orwell’s classic story of totalitarian oppression gets a new 4K restoration from Criterion, overseen by cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose desaturated style of shooting matched the grim production design. Michael Radford’s take on “1984” presents a chilling dystopian society that is still recognizable today.

‘Do the Right Thing’ (July 23): Spike Lee’s seminal 1989 masterpiece chronicles the racial tensions boiling within a Brooklyn neighborhood on a single day. Long considered one of the most important films in American cinema, it gets a new 4K restoration from Criterion.

NEW VIDEO ON DIGITAL, DEMAND, AND STREAMING

    ‘Tolkien’ (July 23)

The iconic author of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” is the subject of this biopic, which mixes adventure, magic, love, courage, and fellowship. Nicholas Hoult stars as the young writer in his formative years who finds friendship and artistic inspiration in a close-knit group of friends at college. But their “fellowship” is torn apart when they’re all sent to fight in World War I. Available on Digital HD July 23.

    ‘The Boys’ (July 26)

Amazon’s new subversive superhero series is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes — who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods — abuse their powers rather than use them for good. A group of vigilantes known as The Boys work to take down the corrupt heroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

Box Office: ‘Shazam!’ Scores Again, ‘Little’ Edges Out ‘Hellboy’

    Warner Bros.

Shazam!” niftily held off several newcomers this weekend to top the box office for the second week in a row with $25 million. That brings its North American box-office-haul to $94 million so far.  Worldwide, it’s earned $258 million.

The film, which stars Zachary Levi, fell only 53% compared to its first weekend. A sequel is already being planned.

    Universal

The PG-13 comedy “Little,” in which mean boss Regina Hall reverts to a 13-year-old version of herself (Marsai Martin), took second place with $15 million.

The film is the brainchild of 14-year-old Martin, who is now the youngest executive producer of all time.

The movie, which costars Issa Rae of “Insecure,” drew in a mostly female crowd: Women were 65% of ticket buyers and 56% were over 25.

Tina Gordon (“Peeples”) directed and Will Packer of “Girls Trip,” “Night School,” and “Ride Along” fame, produced.

    Lionsgate

It was bad news for the “Hellboy” reboot starring David Harbour of “Stranger Things” as the big red demon. Reviews were savage (it’s currently 15% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences gave it a “C” Cinemascore.

The R-rated film was expected to open with at least $16 million, but underperformed with a mere $12 million.

Neil Marshall (“The Descent,” “Dog Soldiers”) directed, taking over the franchise from Guillermo del Toro, who helmed the first two films.

    Aviron

The romantic drama “After” landed in eighth place with $6.2 million from 2,138 theaters.  It’s an adaptation of Anna Todd’s best-selling fan fiction novel.

    Laika

The latest Laika stop-animation film, “Missing Link,” took ninth place with $5.8 million. Despite positive reviews — it has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore — the film barely cracked the top 10.

It performed far below previous Laika films: “Coraline” debuted with $16.8 million in 2009,  “ParaNorman” opened with $14 million in 2012, and “Kubo and the Two Strings” had a $12.6 debut in 2016.

Here are the top 10 estimates for April 12-14, 2019

    1. “Shazam!,” $25,140,000

12 Things You Never Knew About ‘Hellboy’ On its 15th Anniversary

    Columbia Pictures

It’s now been 15 years since “Hellboy” blasted its way into theaters and introduced moviegoers to a very different breed of superhero. While you wait for the character to return to the big screen in the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot, here are some fun facts you might not know about the original movie.

    1. Early on in the film’s development, producers at Columbia suggested making various audience-friendly changes to the material, including having Hellboy be a normal human who transforms into a demon when he gets angry, a la the Hulk.

    2. Director Guillermo del Toro provided several voices in the movie, including the infant Hellboy, Ivan the Corpse and Kroenen.

    Columbia Pictures

    3. Following the success of “Blade II,” Del Toro was given a choice between directing “Blade: Trinity” or “Hellboy.” We’d say he chose wisely.

4.The Fast and the Furious” star Vin Diesel was considered for the parts of both Hellboy and Abe Sapien.

    Universal Pictures

    5. While largely based on several “Hellboy” comic storylines, the movie also makes some significant deviations from the source material. For example, Hellboy and Liz aren’t romantically involved in the comics.

    6. Makeup artist Matt Rose was able to reuse the life mask created for Ron Perlman for the 1987 “Beauty and the Beast” TV series, speeding up the creation of the Hellboy prosthetics.

    Columbia Pictures

    7. It took about four hours each day to apply Perlman’s makeup and prosthetics.  Abe Sapien actor Doug Jones had it even worse, as his process took seven hours.

    8. Abe Sapien’s voice was dubbed by “Frasier” star David Hyde Pierce. Pierce refused to be credited because he felt Jones was the one responsible for bringing the character to life and Jones replaced Pierce in the sequel.

    9. Jeffrey Tambor was a last-minute addition to the cast, as his predecessor didn’t show up for production.

    Columbia Pictures

    10. One of the tombstones in the Russian cemetery is labeled with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola‘s name and reads “Born in fire, died in fire” when translated into English.

    11. The Spear of Longinus in the movie is an exact replica of the artifact believed to be the actual spear that pierced Christ’s side during the crucifixion.

    12. The movie had to be renamed “Super Sapiens” in Malaysia because of a nationwide ban on movies containing the words “devil” or “hell.”

  • New ‘Hellboy’ Red-Band Trailer Is Filled With Blood, Guts and F-Bombs

New ‘Hellboy’ Red-Band Trailer Is Filled With Blood, Guts and F-Bombs

    Summit

There will be blood — lots and lots of it — in the new “Hellboy.”

A second red-band trailer for the reboot is here, chock-full of violence, gore, and F-bombs. The titular half-demon (now played by David Harbour) is a younger, perhaps even more rough-around-the-edges version than the one played by Ron Perlman in the Guillermo del Toro films 15 years ago.

The trailer lays out Hellboy’s origin story and touches on his training by adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane).

Now all grown up (and with a mouth to prove it) Hellboy and his giant, smashing arm join the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to defeat the medieval sorceress Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich).

There’s a lot going on here, from Nazis to gigantic skeletons wreaking havoc on London to Daniel Dae Kim turning into a were- jaguar. And of course, all the very explicit maimings and murders.

“Hellboy” opens in theaters April 12.
