Premiering on Apple TV+ beginning November 17th is the new series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ which is set in the MonsterVerse universe that includes the movies ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island.’

The series is executive produced by director Matt Shakman (‘Fantastic Four’), written and developed by executive producers Chris Black (‘Severance’) and Matt Fraction (‘Hawkeye’), and features real-life father and son actors Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell both playing new character, Lee Shaw.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with executive producer and director Matt Shakman about his work on ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ diving into Monarch’s backstory, connecting it to the movies, balancing different timelines, casting Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell as the same character, and show’s new creatures.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Shakman, VFX Supervisor Sean Konrad, and actors Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about having the opportunity to dive into the backstory of Monarch and, with this series, connect it to the MonsterVerse movies?

Matt Shakman: What I love so much about what Chris Black and Matt Fraction, who created the show, have done here is they’ve created this beautiful human-centric way into the MonsterVerse. I think if you’re a fan of the MonsterVerse movies and of Godzilla, there is so much here that you will love. It’s full of Easter eggs, and it’s a puzzle that works within existing mythology. But if you are not familiar with that mythology, there’s a way in as well through the eyes of these wonderful characters who also don’t know anything about this MonsterVerse and are learning as they go. So, it’s an emotional story that works within a complicated couple of timelines. I think what is most impressive is that it’s a multi-generational family drama, that it also is combined with epic storytelling and colossal action.

MF: As you mentioned, the show does unfold in two separate timelines. Can you talk about the challenges of navigating those different storylines across different timelines?

MS: It’s very clever what Matt and Chris created because we have a trio in the past and a trio in the present, and there are direct connections that we learn about as the series goes on, how they’re related. Their stories get more and more intertwined as the show goes on. There are thematic resonances, too, that are happening. They’ve created a story that truly is about legacy. It’s in the title of the show, and it makes a whole lot of sense. It’s about, obviously, this organization Monarch, but it’s about the Randa family in the present day. It’s Cate (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe) who learn about each other, realize they have a sibling they did not know about, and that there’s a lot they did not know about their father. Then, we’re learning about their grandparents in a way who are the founders of Monarch, and about Hiroshi’s parents. So, there’s a whole lot of stories about trauma, discovery, love and loss that trickles down from the 1950s all the way to 2014 and 2015.

MF: Whose brilliant idea was it to cast both Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell as Lee Shaw, and what was it like for you working with both actors?

MS: That was an idea that just presented itself by fate, I think, really. It was incredible to work with them. They’re both brilliant actors. I’m a huge fan of Kurt Russell going way back, just like I am of Godzilla, and I’m a huge fan of Wyatt’s, too. It was amazing to be able to work with them to create one character. I think they had been offered father/son things before, understandably, because they bear such a striking resemblance to each other, but then nothing had clicked, or they hadn’t found the right project, but they really wanted to work together. Then here we go. We have this idea that they could play the same character. What’s fun about it is they’re very different actors. They’re different in their vibes. They’re different in the way they approach things. I think they really loved the idea of, “Oh, well, I’ll take a little bit from Wyatt, and I’ll take a little bit from Kurt, and we’ll put it together, and we’ll create our own version of a character that we might not otherwise have created in that way.” It became a family project.

MF: Finally, can you tease fans about the new creatures they will see in this series and how you wanted those monsters to look?

MS: We have obviously legendary characters that you see, like Godzilla from the Toho films and from the legendary MonsterVerse. We’ve got characters from there. But we did get to invent a whole bunch of new characters, and that is just super exciting for a MonsterVerse fan to be able to add things. What’s great about the monsters we were creating is we wanted them to fit into their environment, whether it was on the ice in a world of snow or whether it was part of Skull Island. When we were creating the opening for John Goodman, we had all sorts of different ideas about how that would’ve worked and what creatures would be involved. But when I found this location in Hawaii that was this volcanic rock jetty that went out into the water, it felt exactly like Skull Island. I was like, “Oh, we’ve got to shoot here.” I went climbing down to the end of it, and suddenly, all these crabs that I didn’t see that were camouflaged against the rock ran away. I thought, “Oh, my gosh. Well, that’s what we must do. We have to do a camouflaged crab monster that fits this environment.” So, the environment inspired us. Then we looked at all sorts of different crabs and other creatures we could smoosh together, and then that just made it big and threw it at one of these characters that we love. That’s the joy of it.

    • The new trailer for Apple TV+ series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ explores more of the story.
    • The show is set in the same universe as 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and other monster movies.
    • Kurt Russell and son Wyatt Russell play the same character in different time periods.

New York Comic-Con is happening now, and Apple TV+ is using the event to debut new information and trailers about its various upcoming genre shows. Chief among them was two of the biggest: the return of alt-history sci-fi drama ‘For All Mankind’, and for those who like their TV series full of giant creatures, ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’.

‘Monarch’ is set in the same universe as the Legendary (which co-produces here) and Warner Bros. “MonsterVerse’, which has featured movies such as 2014’s ‘Godzilla’, 2017’s ‘Kong: Skull Island’, ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ from ‘2019’ and 2021 release ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong.’ ‘Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire’ is due next year.

Yet don’t expect any big characters (excepting the giant lizard himself) to show up in the show (initially). It’s more focused on a new batch of storylines.

In theaters on Friday 29th September, ‘The Creator’ represents a return for director Gareth Edwards, who made his name with low-budget sci-fi marvel ‘Monsters’ and was then recruited to make the likes of ‘Godzilla’ and a ‘Star Wars’ entry.

But with ‘The Creator’, he’s in his own world, albeit one that owes a big debt to genre and other classic movies.

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and possibly mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… Only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

    Is ‘The Creator’ worth watching?

Gareth Edwards is more known these days for being the director behind such giant franchise movies as ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ (more controversially on the latter, since there was plenty of talk about how the studio had Tony Gilroy come in and re-write/re-shoot chunks of the movie, and it’s telling that Gilroy would go on to create prequel Disney+ series ‘Andor, not Edwards).

But before both of those behemoths, he was the talent responsible for the excellent, grounded (despite the presence of giant alien creatures) ‘Monsters’ in 2010, which mixed a very human story of mismatched love with superbly realized effects. ‘The Creator’ leans much more into that style of film, with its shaky-cam guerilla shooting utilizing some beautiful natural backgrounds across Asia and story of a human being making a connection.

Yet while ‘Monsters’ was inspired by disaster films (and Richard Linklater for its central duo), ‘The Creator’ is feeding more from the output of filmmakers such as James Cameron and Francis Ford Coppola. This is a work of excellent world building, Edwards carefully assembling a reality where the West is engaged in a conflict against the artificial lifeforms it built to perform tasks which has since rebelled to secure its own freedom.

A nuclear strike on Los Angeles a decade ago left America going on the offensive, but in a nice twist of the usual man-vs-machine narrative, Asia has embraced the AI, offering sanctuary for the various synthetics. It gives the story echoes of Vietnam, the U.S. involved in a war it may not win.

To try and prevent that, the US government has built NOMAD, a giant orbital weapons platform that can target individuals and structures, launching devastating missile strikes. The technological terror makes for superb visuals, spectral lasers scouring the countryside and raining fire down upon mech-heads.

‘The Creator’ also looks great, the mostly natural settings (though a grubby industrial city glimpsed midway through the movie is just as remarkable) giving this a standout style.

Edwards also has a good eye for casting, with Washington giving another solid performance and bonding well with newcomer Voyles, who believably mixes childlike innocence with the flawless effects work of the character. Supporting them are the likes of Janney (as a gritty Colonel who will stop at nothing to track them down) and Watanabe, reuniting with his ‘Godzilla’ director and doing typically excellent work as an AI with a link to Joshua’s past.

This might be the most beautiful and technologically effective sci-fi thriller you’ll see this year.

What doesn’t work about ‘The Creator’?

A scene still from 20th Century Studios' 'The Creator.'
A scene still from 20th Century Studios’ ‘The Creator.’ Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2023 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

There are some downsides to the movie, primarily that its world-building invention and affecting performances can’t quite overcome the storyline, which feels like the director (who wrote the script with Chris Weitz, his collaborator on early drafts of ‘Rogue One’) borrowing parts of other movies.

It’s possible to see elements of primarily James Cameron’s movies, especially ‘The Terminator’ (a U.S. Army vehicle deployed late in the movie reminded me of the tank-like Hunter Killers) and ‘Aliens’ (in the dynamic of the grunts Janney leads into combat), blended with something more along the lines of Alfonso Cuaron’s work.

Which is not completely a bad thing –– if you’re going to borrow, why not pick the best? Yet when you’re ticking off elements you’ve seen in movies such as ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Blade Runner’ and not completely concentrating on the tale that Edwards is looking to tell here, you know you’re in some trouble.

Likewise, the story itself, of Joshua’s connection to the young AI, is something we’ve seen several times before even with the various metaphysical and ethical trappings aiming to freshen things.

Add to that the fact that despite an early scene of them swapping banter, the bond between Washington and Chan’s characters is nowhere near as effective, with the various flashbacks to stages of their relationship coming across as the filmmaker trying to convince you to feel something and falling short.

The problems, though, don’t sink this one. It’s good to see Edwards back to his own sphere after a few years of running around in other people’s genre playgrounds. ‘The Creator’ is proof that he hasn’t lost his touch for sweeping sci-fi with relatable emotions at its core, and it’s certainly one I would recommend seeking out in IMAX formats to make the most of the love poured into the look of the movie.

This may not be the most original movie you’ll see this year, but it’s certainly one of the more impressive. Welcome back, Gareth Edwards: we’ve missed your viewpoints and your heartfelt humanity.

‘The Creator’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you say to audiences sitting down to watch this film to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Gareth Edwards: If They’ve already decided to go and they bought their ticket, I would say nothing at all. If they haven’t, I would say, it’s very hard to talk about a film without doing any spoilers whatsoever. I’d just say, “It’s not what you think It’s going to be.” The title of this movie, when we were making it, was called ‘True Love.’ It’s a very emotional journey, I hope. That is the thing. The thing I’m most hearing about now as we’re starting to show the film to people, is how they are surprised about how they were affected, emotionally, watching the film. I mean, I love robots and explosions and spaceships, and that’s why I started making the film, but it’s all for nothing if it doesn’t give you the feels.

MF: Can you talk about developing the story and the themes of Artificial intelligence that you wanted to explore with this movie?

GE: I think when you sit down and go, “I want to make a movie about prejudice,” or whatever the theme is, if you do that, you’re going to make a terrible film. You lock onto something that super interests you. For me, it was the idea of, essentially, if you’ve seen the materials, there’s a little AI child at the heart of this movie. John David Washington’s character is essentially sent to kill it. He can win the war and save humanity if he just kills this kid. In the process of taking the kid to be assassinated, he starts to question everything he believes and gets very torn, and everyone is pursuing them and all those things. When you land on something that interests you like that, as you’re writing it, it starts to tell you what the theme is. You get themes about prejudice and about xenophobia or whatever, and then you try to help that, like a child who grows up and tells you what it wants to be when it’s older. It’s like a story does that too. You try to encourage it. But I hate films that preach to you and I love films with gray morally. I am going to be fascinated what people think when they come out and how it makes them feel about AI and everything, because I try to take people on quite a journey and I’m not sure everyone fully appreciates. I think they think they know what the movie’s going to do and I hope it doesn’t do that.

MF: Finally, can you talk about the very “human relationship” that Joshua and Alfie form together and creating that chemistry with John David Washington and Madeleine Yuna Voyles?

GE: Yeah, it was super important that the two of them had that chemistry. It was fundamental to the entire movie. Madeleine, she is beyond her years. She’s like a reincarnated brilliant actress from some other era, I think, because a six-year-old girl should not be able to do that kind of performance she did. Basically, she’s very introverted. You know what I mean? She’s very shy, and so it was hard to get into her bubble and become a friend of hers. She keeps everyone at a distance in a good way. Also, we were in the middle of nowhere in the jungles of Thailand shooting this movie. I couldn’t blame her. But then John David worked really hard to become her best friend and he cracked it. It was really hilarious to watch, because when you do a take and an actor needs to stay in the zone, they’re doing something emotional or something, and what happens, you say, “Cut,” and they go off into the corner and they won’t talk to anyone. They need their little space. He would go off into the corner. Madeleine would just get up, follow him, hold his hand, and start talking about some toy she really liked at home and that she played with, or tell him some random story, the way kids do, that’s completely just something only a kid can say. You’d be hearing this cracking up. John David was such a nice guy. He’d lean down and talk to her, and play, and get all enthusiastic with her. He became her big brother and best friend. They had had a long period of not seeing each other. It was her birthday the other week. We went to Disneyland with her and with John David. Her eyes, just the whole day, it was like she’d been reunited with her best mate. It was beautiful.

  • First Teaser for ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’

You’ll have seen the first images from Apple TV+ series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monstersthat arrived last month. But what if you said to yourself, “pictures are fine, but I want to see footage of Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell and more sharing the screen with giant behemoths.”

Well, now you can, because the first trailer from the series is online. And while we were perhaps concerned that this might be the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ to the likes of ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (the Marvel series suffered in comparison to its big screen brethren due to a lack of effects budget and scope), Apple has certainly shelled out enough cash to bring monstrous beasties to life.

The teaser, as they are wont to do, only hints at that, but we do get a good close-up of Godzilla roaring away, as he is… wont to do?

And, as revealed in this new look, John Goodman makes a cameo via video as his ‘Skull Island’ character William Randa, apologizing that he can’t fix his mistakes, but he can leave a legacy.

Developed by writers Chris Black (a veteran of shows such as ‘Severance’, and ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’) and ‘Hawkeye’ comicbook writer Matt Fraction, the show’s first two episodes have been directed by ‘WandaVision’s Matt Shakman.

We’ve had monster footprint teaser images, but Apple and Legendary today confirmed the title of the companies’ new series set in the “Monsterverse” of kaiju like Godzilla and revealed the first proper look at some of the cast (including the giant creature having a roaring time).

The series, which will follow the mysterious company established in Legendary and Warner Bros’ Monsterverse movies (2014’s ‘Godzilla’, ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ from 2017, 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ and 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ (with the latest, ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ targeting a March 15th release next year), has clearly enjoyed the sort of lavish attention that Apple has applied to the likes of ‘Foundation’ and ‘Invasion’.

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, the series tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch.

Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played both by Kurt Russell and real-life son Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows.

The dramatic saga –– spanning three generations –– reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

And, of course, lots of monster action.

He will embark on a quest to learn more about his revered yet mysterious father and discover his own talents in the process.

Clemons has the role of May, an American ex-pat with a roguish exterior that she uses to protect herself as well as others. Whether it be deciphering a code or finding the loophole, she is always three steps ahead of everyone around her.

  • Next Monsterverse Movie is ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’

    lPWxr5dt

While Legendary and Warner Bros.’ “Monsterverse” movies –– the series of connected films featuring giant beasts such as Godzilla and King Kong –– have seen mixed fortunes at the box office, they have enjoyed enough success that it is continuing.

Partly that’s thanks to 2021’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’, which saw the two headliners face off against each other (and another dangerous, more human-forged creature). The movie itself had to contend with a troublesome patch in the ongoing pandemic and a day-and-date release on HBO Max as well as theaters but managed to overcome both challenges to become the second film of the Covid era to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, en route to $468 million globally.

Now, the director of that movie, Adam Wingard, is back for more, and we know that the next movie will be called ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’.

    PX01ucUebc3N5sFufDFEA5

Yes, it does sound a little bit like the two beasties are starting a fashion collab together, but in reality, it’s just the next big movie to feature them.

So, the next question of course, is…

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is in production right now and will be in theaters on March 15th next year.

What’s the story of ‘Godzilla x Kong’?

    Here’s the official synopsis…

This new movie follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence –– and our own.

The epic new story will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

Who is working on the new movie?

Wingard made his name with clever, low-budget horror, but has gone on to a varied genre career that also included a new ‘Blair Witch’ movie and manga adaptation ‘Death Note’ before he was hired to wrangle giant CG creatures.

He has several returning cast members, including Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews, Brian Tyree Henry as fan-favorite Bernie Hayes and Kaylee Hottle as young human Kong friend Jia.

New to the Monsterverse this time are Dan Stevens (who Wingard worked with on ‘The Guest’), ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsFala Chen and ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’s Rachel House.

The screenplay is by Simon Barrett, a regular colleague of Wingard’s, who is building on work from Jeremy Slater and Terry Rossio.

14 Best Sci-Fi Movie Franchises Ranked

    Best Sci-fi movie franchises
    WB/Lucasfilm/TriStar

People need their escapism these days. These are the best sci-fi and fantasy franchises of all time, including a couple that blur the line between the two.

    14. Blade Runner

The fact that “Blade Runner” qualifies as a franchise now rather than one really beloved sci-fi movie is a pretty neat development. To date, the franchise only consists of two films, a couple animated shorts and a tenuous connection to the “Alien” movies, but here’s hoping it continues to grow.

    20078309

    13. Godzilla

The “Godzilla” series is both one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time and one of the most prolific. This is a series that spans dozens of sequels and all sorts of random spinoffs, with the tone varying between serious contemplation of nuclear age horror to rampant monster-on-monster zaniness. We wish American studios had better success translating that formula, but you can’t argue with the sheer amount of Godzilla goodness on tap.

    12. The Hunger Games

You can pretty much trace the current YA dystopian fiction craze straight back to the “Hunger Games” series. And it’s little wonder it turned out to be such a trend-setter. These four movies offer a captivating look at a world so deranged the wealthy elite make hungry teenagers fight to death for their amusement. The allegory is pretty obvious in this case.

    11. X-Men

The “X-Men” franchise has seen some pretty extreme highs and lows over the course of almost two decades of existence. Fortunately, those highs are enough to make up for everything else. These aren’t just great superhero movies, but terrific sci-fi parables about outcasts banding together to make the world a better place. Here’s hoping that things will only improve as the franchise makes it way to Marvel Studios.

    10. Alien

1979’s “Alien” and its 1986 sequel both rank among the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. One is a claustrophobic sci-fi horror mash-up, and the other is a delightfully enjoyable action romp. Sadly, none of the sequels, prequels, and spinoffs have quite lived up to that standard, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t always eager to spend more time in this universe.

    9. Harry Potter

It’s rare to find a franchise that stays good for even two or three movies, much less eight. But for the most part, the “Harry Potter” series only got better with time. And now that series has spawned a whole new spinoff franchise in the form of “Fantastic Beasts.” Between the two, you have one of the most consistently entertaining fantasy properties in Hollywood.

Here is your guide to watch Harry Potter movies in order.

    8. Mad Max

The “Mad Max” movies remain the gold standard when it comes to post-apocalyptic action. And thanks to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the franchise has proven itself to be more relevant and daring than ever in the 21st Century. That belated sequel shows that this series doesn’t need to rest on the shoulders of Mel Gibson, or even the Max Rockatansky character at all.

    7. The Lord of the Rings

For decades, many “Lord of the Rings” fanatics considered this franchise to be impossible to adapt to the big screen. But all it took was a crafty team led by director Peter Jackson to do justice to J.R.R. Tolkien’s sweeping saga of men, elves, orcs and Hobbits. The original trilogy ushered in a whole new weave of fantasy and medieval epics. It’s unfortunate that the “Hobbit” prequels were stretched beyond the breaking point, but we’re still eager to see what other directions Hollywood can take this beloved fantasy series in the years to come.

    6. The Planet of the Apes

From the original series to the new, very photo-real reboot, “Apes” is the allegorical-heavy and emotionally-resonate franchise we need and deserve right now.

    20072319

    5. Terminator

Much like the “Alien” franchise, the “Terminator” series is marked by two amazing movies followed by sequels and spinoffs of varying degrees of quality. But those first two movies are enough to cement this franchise as one of the greatest sci-fi properties of all time. The conflict between man and machine is still as resonant now as it was at the time, as is the central theme of fate vs. free will. We just hope we can get one more good sequel out of Arnold Schwarzenegger before he retires from the series for good.

    4. Back to the Future

There’s a lot to be said for a franchise that knows when to call it quits. “Back to the Future” never overstayed its welcome. The 1985 original is a delightful fusion of science fiction and comedy. Its two sequels further enrich the whirlwind saga of Marty McFly and Doc Brown. And that’s it. Other than an entertaining animated series and a video game continuation, this franchise has been allowed to rest in peace. No remakes or reboots to dilute the appeal of the originals.
    13014
    22233

    3. Star Trek

TV may be the medium in which “Star Trek” works best, but there have been some darned good Trek movies over the decades. Between “The Wrath of Khan,” “The Voyage Home,” “First Contact” and the recent reboot series, there’s no shortage of sci-fi goodness to be found with this franchise. Even if these movies are notorious for alternating between good and bad sequels, “Star Trek” will always rank among the greats.

    2. The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Iron Man in Avengers End Game
    Marvel Studios

The MCU has truly changed the game when it comes to superhero movies. There had certainly been great superhero movies before the MCU came along, but never before had a studio attempted to craft a shared universe on this scale. Marvel Studios has managed to craft a franchsie where super-soldiers, armored billionaires, gods and aliens bump elbows. Most amazingly of all, almost all of the 20-something MCU movies to date have ranged from really good to downright terrific.

Here is your guide to watch Marvel movies in order.

    1. Star Wars

    Kylo Ren in Star Wars
    Lucasfilm

In the end, could there be any other franchise topping this list? “Star Wars” blurs the lines between sci-fi and fantasy, tapping into our most fundamental myths and archetypes to tell the ultimate story of a heroic few overcoming a terrible evil. The original Trilogy shaped countless childhoods and gave us some of the greatest cinematic moments ever. And while the prequels and sequels have their detractors, they also prove that this is a franchise capable of constantly reshaping itself in order to appeal to new generations. This is a saga that apparently has no end, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

For what feels like ages, fans have been watching Kong and Godzilla’s solo movies and waiting ever-so-patiently for the inevitable matchup. Now, the prehistoric predators are reunited, complete with the Monarch corporation watching their every move. Questions arose in the previous films about whether these big guys were friend or foe of the humans, and as they face off, none of it matters because they’re FIGHTING YOU GUYS FOR REAL OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE THAT?!

Watch It If: You just want to watch an old-fashioned monster slug fest where some people talk occasionally. Also, if you feel comfortable enjoying this in a theater, it is definitely a big screen experience.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (‘The Walking Dead’) is a broke-down journalist who fell from grace for pushing fake news. But wouldn’t ya know, while on assignment to cook up a cheap hacky ghost story, he stumbles on a real one. Alice (played by newcomer Cricket Brown) is a hearing impaired teen living with her priest uncle (William Sadler). She is drawn to the twisted, lone tree on their property and claims to have heard the voice of The Virgin Mary. She begins healing Mary’s believers…but the question remains, who are they really praying to?

Watch It If: You need some Morgan without Lucille, his ‘Walking Dead’ barbwire bat, and if you want to see Cary Elwes in priest robes. Which, trust me, you totally do.

In this drama, Harp (Idris Elba) is one of the adults doing great things in the neighborhood with the organization, but clashing with his own son Cole (Caleb McLaughlin of ‘Stranger Things’). Will the two men learn the same kind of harmony with each other?

    Watch It If:

Lesotho, a South African country, declared independence 55 years ago and presented this film as its first-ever Oscar entry this year. It features an 80-year-old widow named Mantoa (Mary Twala, in her last film before her death) whose village is being resettled by the government, so they can flood the land and bring water to the landlocked nation. In a series of vivid images showing both Mantoa’s real life and her dreams, the film shares a mother’s rage and pain over the death of her son, and how far she will go to be buried with her family. As she feels ready to shuffle off this mortal coil, she has nothing left to lose.

Watch It If: You’re hungry for gorgeous cinematography and rich colors, as well as a performance from an actor you’re sure to remember for a long time coming.

  • 15 Trailers You Loved More Than the Actual Movie

The whole point of movie trailers is to make audiences excited for what’s coming. But sometimes they do their job a little too well. Some move trailers inflate our expectations, only to leave us disappointed when the end product doesn’t live up to a well-edited, two-minute-long teaser.

From “The Phantom Menace” to “Man of Steel,” these are the trailers that wound up being better than the actual films.

“Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace”
It’s not often that people skip school and work just to watch a trailer, but that’s the appeal of seeing the first new Star Wars footage in over 15 years. The “Phantom Menace” teaser showed us glorious new sights like a droid army on the march and Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber. And the movie gave us those things, but also a whole lot that we never bargained for.

    “Spectre”
All we really need out of our James Bond trailers is some cool action, a few shots of gorgeous locations and that iconic theme music. “Spectre” gave us plenty of those things in its trailer. And coming off the high that was “Skyfall,” we had no reason to doubt anything was amiss.

But then we watched the actual movie and were reminded at how quickly things can go wrong with this franchise.

    “Watchmen”

The “Watchmen” movie had been trapped in development hell for so long that many fans refused to believe it existed until the teaser trailer finally arrived. That teaser had us believing director Zack Snyder could actually do justice to one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of all time. The way iconic images from the book synced up to Smashing Pumpkins music really left a strong impression. Sadly, the movie only wound up proving that some adaptations can be guilty of being too faithful.

    “Die Another Day”
We should have been wary of this Bond sequel, given how poorly Pierce Brosnan‘s previous two films played out. But we couldn’t help but be won over by this teaser’s stylish opening sequence, cool narration, and short burst of awesome Bond footage. It didn’t show much of the actual film, and — eventually — we learned there was good reason for that.

    “Godzilla”
The original teaser for 1998’s “Godzilla” is unique in that it doesn’t feature any actual footage from the film. Instead, it acts as a short film that teases the Americanized reboot of the iconic monster and pokes a little fun at “Jurassic Park” in the process. It’s an effective trailer, but perhaps we should have been more suspicious of their unwillingness to show the final product.

    “Prometheus”

After a progressively worse series of sequels and spinoffs, we were ready for Ridley Scott to return and bring the “Alien” franchise back to basics. The teaser for “Prometheus” showed every sign that he could pull it off, with plenty of evocative imagery and a terrifying soundtrack that called back to the original “Alien” teaser. What the teaser didn’t show us was how much of the movie centered around convoluted mythology and dumb characters doing dumb things for dumb reasons.

    “Man of Steel”

Rarely has there been such a huge divide between a film’s trailers and the finished product. All three “Man of Steel” trailers offered a captivating look at a superhero reborn, one who represented all the goodness and wonder we expect from Superman.

By the time the final trailer debuted Hans Zimmer‘s epic new score, we were all-in on the new Superman. Sadly, the actual movie proved far more brooding and depressing than the trailers.

    “The Dark Knight Rises”

There was probably no way Christopher Nolan‘s third Batman movie could ever have lived up to “The Dark Knight.” That doesn’t mean the final trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” didn’t have our hopes up.

It showed us a tantalizing glimpse of the movie, one that paired epic superhero images with a slowly mounting score. And in some ways, the actual movie lived up to the hype. But between the numerous plot holes and head-scratching story choices, TDKR wasn’t everything it could have been.

    “Where the Wild Things Are”

Flawed as it is, there’s a lot to like about Spike Jonze‘s ambitious, emotionally charged adaptation of this beloved children’s book. The problem is that you basically get that same rush in much more concentrated form just by watching the trailer. After all, two minutes is about all the time it takes to read the book. Did we really need a two hour movie?

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”

Before “Thor: Ragnarok,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” proved that there’s no better way to deliver a memorable trailer than to pair some cool, tightly edited footage with Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” Sadly, where “Ragnarok” lived up to its own hype, “Dragon Tattoo” proved to be an underwhelming experience. We expected something of more substance from the director who gave us classics like “Seven.” In the end, we’re not surprised that this American remake failed to spawn a full-fledged franchise.

    “X-Men: The Last Stand”

The third X-Men movie derailed the franchise in a bad way. But based solely on the trailer, we would have thought we were in for a worthy follow-up to “X2.” That’s the power of good editing. It can hide all the less savory elements like an underwhelming climax or the fact that certain key characters are killed off way too soon.

    “Terminator Salvation”

Terminator Salvation” tantalized us with the prospect of a film entirely set in a wartorn future of which past Terminator movies had only shown small glimpses. Unfortunately, it was a formula that worked a lot better in trailer form than as an actual film. But hey, at least “Salvation” will go down in history as having the best use of a Nine Inch Nails song in a trailer.

    “Pearl Harbor”

Pearl Harbor” is a textbook case of a trailer distilling all the good parts of a bad movie and inflating the expectations of viewers. Between the rousing instrumental music, Jon Voight‘s delivery of FDR’s speech and images of America gearing up for war, the trailer shows all the makings of a historical epic. It leaves out the bloated story and awkward love triangle that bogged down the actual movie.

    “Suicide Squad”

We were wary of the DCEU after being disappointed by both “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman.” Even so, the first trailer for “Suicide Squad” left us hopeful for a cinematic redemption. The trailer did a great job of teasing a violent, stylish romp featuring the villains of the DC Universe. The inspired soundtrack choices didn’t hurt.

The problem is that it teased a movie that didn’t really exist, no matter how many last-minute reshoots and re-edits WB tried to cram in.

“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”

It’s impossible not to be won over by the teaser for “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” In addition to its effective soundtrack choice, it presents a joyous look at an ordinary man who decides to finally venture forth and live out his dreams.

Unfortunately, the actual movie lacks the substance to back up that well-meaning story, meaning it’s a formula that just works better as a two-minute music video.
