    • Sam Neill is the latest recruit for the latest Godzilla and King Kong ‘Monsterverse’ movie.
    • Grant Sputore is directing the new movie.
    • Dan Stevens will be back as vet Trapper.

Given that he’s one of the key figures in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise (and who popped back up for ‘Jurassic World: Dominion,’ you might think that Sam Neill would want to avoid trouble with giant beasties in his cinematic career.

Yet here he is again, not back with the genetically returned dinosaurs this time, but instead taking his chances running around with another massive reptile –– Godzilla, who will be back on screens with best pal/frenemy King Kong for the next, still-to-be-officially-titled Monsterverse movie from Legendary and Warner Bros.

Deadline reports that Neill has joined the cast of the new movie, which is now in production.

The movie followed up the explosive showdown of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat of a monstrous white ape hidden within our world, challenging their very existence –– and our own.

It delved further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

The new, untitled effort is still mostly being kept under wraps, but according to the first official details, it’ll follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

Yep, apparently, there are still some giant threats lurking out there; so the big ape and the giant lizard will have to spring into action once again. But at least they have new some human friends (and potentially foes) to spend time with!

Alongside director Grant Sputore (who made his directorial debut with Netflix sci-fi thriller ‘I Am Mother’), the film will have a script from ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ writer Dave Callaham.

And back in January, Deadline reported that the movie saw its first piece of casting as Kaitlyn Dever locked in a deal to star.

Best known for her roles in TV limited series ‘Dopesick’ and the 2019 movie ‘Booksmart,’ Dever has a key role in the second season of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us,’ which just returned to screens.

Details on her character are also, like much of the movie, a mystery, though apparently it represents a renewed push to add in solid characters, which has been a common complaint of especially some of the more recent Monsterverse efforts.

We can also add to the new recruit list the likes of ‘Unbroken’ and ‘Back to Black’s Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo, most recently seen in ‘The Harder They Fall’ and headed our way in Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ this week. Also aboard? Alycia Debnam-Carey, who last appeared in Netflix wellness scam drama ‘Apple Cider Vinegar,’ which coincidentally starred Dever.

As with Dever and Modine, we don’t yet know anyone is playing, but Dan Stevens is confirmed to reprise his role as Trapper, the cocky, thrill-seeking veterinarian who helps Kong when the giant ape is injured.

Where else have I seen Sam Neill?

(L to R) Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) and Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) in 'Jurassic World Dominion,' co-written and directed by Colin Trevorrow.

As we mentioned above, Neill may still be best known for his role as warm-but-grouchy paleontologist Alan Grant in various ‘Jurassic’ movies.

Yet the versatile actor has enjoyed a long, successful career hopping between the giant likes of those blockbusters and more indie work.

In the last few years alone, he’s been seen in movies such as ‘Bring Him to Me,’ ‘The Portable Door’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’

Further back, he’s been part of the cast for ‘The Piano,’ ‘The Dish’ and ‘Event Horizon.’ On TV, his back catalogue includes Apple TV+ series ‘Invasion,’ ‘Apples Never Fall’ and ‘Peaky Blinders.’

Already around for a decade, Legendary’s Monsterverse follows humanity’s battle to survive in a world facing a catastrophic new reality –– the monsters of our myths and legends are real.

It all kicked off with ‘Godzilla’ in 2014 and continued through 2017’s ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters,’ 2021’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ and last year’s record-breaking ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.’

The Monsterverse has grossed more than $2.5 billion at the global box office and has expanded onto smaller screens via ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ for Apple TV+, which has been renewed for a second season.

When will the new Monsterverse movie be on screens?

The movie is currently scheduled for release on March 26th, 2027. Let’s hope theaters have time to reinforce their walls. And that it doesn’t inspire kaiju to start their own version of the ‘Minecraft’ audience chaos when it opens.

Emboldened by the success of last year’s ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ (it earned more than $571 million at the worldwide box office), Legendary is full speed ahead expanding its “Monsterverse” cinematic universe revolving around the likes of Godzilla, King Kong and others (Gamera is still waiting for his spotlight. Justice for Gamera!)

The next movie doesn’t yet have an announced title, but it’ll continue the story introduced in that film and there will be at least one human character continuing over.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Stevens will be back as Trapper, who we met in ‘The New Empire.’

Trapper, you may recall, was introduced wearing a loose Hawaiian shirt over a t-shirt, in ‘Godzilla x Kong’ doing dangerous dental work on Kong and replacing the big ape’s infected tooth.

This laidback veterinarian soon ends up joining the other characters on an expedition into Hollow Earth, an area that is the home to gigantic and monstrous creatures.

Stevens, of course, was brought aboard by his occasional collaborator, director Adam Wingard. Since handling the last two movies, though, Wingard has chosen not to return for this one.

Instead, Grant Sputore is in the director’s chair.

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st 2023.

    • Toho Studios has announced a new ‘Godzilla’ movie.
    • It follows in the huge footsteps of ‘Godzilla Minus One.’
    • Writer/director Takashi Yamazaki will return to craft the latest film.

    Monsterverse? Schmonsterverse.

While Warner Bros. and Legendary might be cooking up new ways for the gigantic likes of Godzilla and Kong to battle other beasties (or each other), the studios have seen diminishing returns on their linked series of movies.

Toho Studios, meanwhile, birthplace of at least the big G (plus a host of other Kaiju) are looking to capitalize on the mammoth success of 2023’s ‘Godzilla Minus One.’

    pwJBtuew8u31UOiZPn9fY4

That movie, which was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, was lauded for its special effects (including with the Visual Effects Oscar) in portraying the monster and its rampant destruction on a low budget of around $15 million.

It went on to make $116 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film, plus the second-highest grossing foreign language movie in the U.S.

Now, via an announcement on Twitter, Toho has revealed that Yamazaki will be back to oversee the next movie.

What was the story of ‘Godzilla Minus One’?

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

The human focus of the story was Ryunosuke Kamiki’s Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. When the massive beast reappears years later, a group of soldiers and veterans must band together to defeat the monster before it can destroy Japan.

What will happen in the next movie?

‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

It’s unclear if the new movie is a direct sequel to ‘Godzilla Minus One;’ however, the film did end on a cliffhanger for the rampaging lizard.

After Godzilla is defeated, it’s revealed that a piece of the monster’s flesh is regenerating in the bottom of the ocean.

There’s also the issue of Shikishima’s girlfriend, Noriko Ōishi (Minami Hamabe), who survived a run-in with Godzilla but is left with a mysterious black marking on her neck.

Whatever the story, we can surely expect more big lizard action. And it makes sense that the announcement was made just before Godzilla Day 2024 (November 3rd in case you want to mark it in your diary for the future), which this year celebrates 70 years of the titular beast. And he doesn’t look a day over 65!

When will the new ‘Godzilla’ movie stomp into theaters?

There is no information yet on when the new movie might arrive in US theaters. Toho Studios didn’t mention when the movie might start shooting, so we’re not going to even guess at a release date just yet.

In theaters on Friday 29th March, ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ continues the Monsterverse saga that has played out across movies such as ‘Godzilla’, ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’, the latter directed by Adam Wingard. The filmmaker is back with this new entry, which looks to dive deeper into the Hollow Earth mythology introduced in the versus movie.

It’s definitely not one for newcomers, stuffed full of continuing story threads, though it doesn’t exactly put storytelling depth ahead of big beasts destroying infrastructure as they do battle.

Here’s the big, main, glaring problem with ‘Godzilla x Kong’… It very much takes an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude. But a lot about ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ was broken, and this latest effort definitely doesn’t do anything to fix it.

So while there are certainly elements that work to some degree, the movie as a whole falls down whenever (most of) the humans are on screen. And unless you’re the world’s biggest fan of monsters hitting/blasting/whatever-ing each other, the feeling is very much one of numbing familiarity. While Wingard certainly knows his way around a witty, wrestling move-inspired set piece, even he can’t paper over the giant cracks appearing.

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’: Script and Direction

Featuring a story by Wingard, regular collaborator Simon Barrett and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ veteran Terry Rossio, the actual script is credited to Barrett, Terry Rossio and Jeremy Sumpter.

In truth, though, this really is one of those movies that leaves you wondering how it took so many experienced writers to come up with something so basic. There’s a new monster threat. Kong and Godzilla end up forming an unlikely alliance to deal with it. The humans either deliver exposition or quips (sometimes both). That’s it. There are times where the storytelling has all the complexity of a kid smashing their toys together.

Naturally, no one comes to these movies expecting Dostoevsky-level depth, but ‘The New Empire’ really doesn’t offer much in the way of anything beyond creature rumbles.

As mentioned, Wingard (and the effects team) conjure up some fun fights and brings plenty of knowing winks to monster mythology within them –– one of the big new threats, for example, is a classic kaiju, while our main duo is helped by a well-known creature (we’d joke about their name, but it’s too much of a spoilery giveaway).

Yet so much of the movie takes place within the Hollow Earth that it devolves into a mess of CGI that sometimes looks rubbery and fake (and far less effective than some atmospheric shots of Godzilla that could have been ripped straight from a classic Toho title.

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’: Performances

Most people are coming to these movies for the bigger names, and we don’t mean any of the humans. In keeping with Wingard’s style, all the monsters have their own personalities (even if Godzilla is more animalistic than Kong’s recognizable emotions) and offer up perfectly serviceable actions. Highlights include the sight of the big lizard curled up to nap in Rome’s coliseum and Kong meeting a new mini version of himself).

Beyond the beasts, there are far slimmer pickings. Rebecca Hall has proved in the past she’s adept at bringing humanity to genre characters, but her Dr. Ilene Andrews serves either as an exposition delivery service (she might as well as be the narrator of the movie, stitching together plot threads and scenes because the title characters can’t) or the emotional heart of the movie alongside adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle).

Yet her connection with Jia is so cliched and basically emotional that it’s never satisfying. Of the other returning characters, Brian Tyree Henry’s Bernie Hayes is once more very standard comic relief, beneath his talents.

Possibly the best character in the new movie is Trapper, the wackily charming character brought to life by Dan Stevens, who completely understands the assignment and clearly looks to be having a blast working with his old friend Wingard (who directed him in the excellent ‘The Guest’ in 2014 –– which we’d heartily recommend watching instead of this film). In fact, he’s having more fun than most people in the audience are likely to.

Exhausting in its CG mishmash, the new monster movie seems unlikely to appeal to all but the monster committed fans of the title characters. It doesn’t re-invent the wheel and it still has no idea what to do with its characters besides have them explain what is going on or look scared.

“Big and dumb” isn’t always a criticism for a giant movie such as this, but in the case of ‘Godzilla x Kong’, it’s an apt description.

Godzilla and King Kong are cinematic characters that have thrilled audiences since they first appeared on the big screen back in 1956, and 1933, respectively.

Since then there have been several movies made about each character, including director Roland Emmerich‘s 1998 ‘Godzilla,’ director Peter Jackson‘s 2005 ‘King Kong,’ and last year’s Japanese film ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ which recently won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

There have also been attempts to combine the two characters into the same film, such as the current MonsterVerse series of movies that includes 2014’s ‘Godzilla,’ 2017’s ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters,’ and 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ as well as the new sequel ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ which opens in theaters on March 29th.

Not to mention the excellent Apple TV+ series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ which takes place within the MonsterVerse and premiered its first season last year.

The new series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ which is set in the MonsterVerse universe that includes the movies ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ began its first season on Apple TV+ November 17th.

The show is executive produced by director Matt Shakman (‘Fantastic Four’), written and developed by executive producers Chris Black (‘Severance’) and Matt Fraction (‘Hawkeye’), and features real-life father and son actors Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell both playing new character, Lee Shaw.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kurt and Wyatt Russell about their work on ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ having the opportunity to work together playing the same role, Kurt’s memories of working with his own father, and what it’s like to be on a TV series set in the cinematic MonsterVerse.

Moviefone: To begin with, Kurt, can you talk about having the opportunity to work with Wyatt on this series, not on screen, but behind the scenes, to create one seamless performance as the same character? What was that experience like for you?

Kurt Russell: It was a bit daunting. We investigated it and realized that two known actors had done a lot of stuff, but the father-son had never been done, and we were excited about it. We were never really, I don’t think, intimidated by it. It was just like we were wanting to get out there and get after it. It was a lot of hard work, a lot of collaboration to figure out who Lee Shaw is going to be and what he’s going to do to help pull these two time periods together. That’s where I had the most fun with Wyatt, and ever since doing some of these interviews and stuff, we were just saying the other day, we haven’t spent this much time since he was playing hockey in Vancouver. It’s been great.

MF: Wyatt what has this experience like for you working with your dad to create the same character?

Wyatt Russell: Same kind of thing. I wouldn’t say it was daunting or I was intimidated, but there was some nervousness on my part because I’d never worked with my dad. There are all the comparisons, they can be kryptonite, they could also be great. So, it was like, “Well, if we’re going to do this, then it’s got to be really good.” The bar in my head, you set even higher than you normally do, and that’s probably a double-edged sword, a good thing and a bad thing. But I was excited by the opportunity to do something big and nervous. I remember my mom (Goldie Hawn) coming into my room one day and talking about something else, but she was like, and my grandfather on my mom’s side said this, “If you’re in the water and your toes just can’t touch the ground, that’s probably right where you’re supposed to be,” and that’s how I felt. It was a good thing, but that’s how I felt.

MF: Kurt, you worked with your father Bing Russell on a few projects, did working with Wyatt on this show bring back any of those memories?

KR: My dad and I worked together five or six times. We were father and son in ‘Elvis.’ He played Vernon Presley. But this is just completely different on its own, being the same person. We have slightly different energies or rhythms, but we have a lot of idiosyncratic similarities. So, we wanted to find the character, find the one that worked, that would be entertaining for the audience, tell the story, complete the mystery, and pull the two time periods together. At the same time, we created that blending thing to have the audience stop thinking about that and just at the end of it say, “We’re so happy they got those two guys to do it. That was actually a good idea.” It wasn’t a stupid trick. It was a good idea.

MF: Finally, Wyatt, the show is huge in scale and scope, and is very cinematic. Did it feel at times like you were making a movie rather than a TV show?

WR: Yes. That was what was really the backstop for any of my anxieties, quite honestly, was then you’d look at where you were. You’d look at the scope of what it was. You’d look at what, in the first two episodes, Matt Shakman was trying to capture with the camera. You’d look at the costumes and what they were putting into it, and it was like, “Okay, well if I suck, this is all going to look awesome.” So, it did feel good and hopefully I didn’t suck. It was awesome. It was on a huge scale.

  • Movie Review: ‘Godzilla Minus One’

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

Opening in theaters on December 1st is ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ which stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, and Munetaka Aoki, and was directed by Takashi Yamazaki.

    Initial Thoughts

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

The latest entry in the world’s longest-running film franchise, ‘Godzilla Minus One’ takes the legendary monster back to earth-shaking basics for perhaps the finest movie in the series since the 1954 original. The movie not only looks and sounds spectacular, but Godzilla has rarely been this frightening. Plus the human story, in which its characters are still coming to terms with the effects of World War II, is emotional, involving and as gripping as the admittedly riveting monster mayhem.

    Story and Direction

Director Takashi Yamazaki and Ryunosuke Kamiki discuss 'Godzilla Minus One.'
(L to R) Director Takashi Yamazaki and Ryunosuke Kamiki discuss ‘Godzilla Minus One.’

As ‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens, it’s the waning days of World War II and kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) lands at an airbase on Odo Island, claiming he’s having problems with his plane. In reality – and to the scorn of chief mechanic Sōsaku Tachibana (Munetaka Aoki) – Kōichi has found himself unable to complete his mission of self-sacrifice.

Already humiliated by his apparent cowardice, Kōichi is shamed and horrified even further when a giant, dinosaur-like creature appears on the island, and Kōichi freezes up instead of firing the 20mm gun on his plane. The monster ends up killing the entire team of mechanics but leaving only Kōichi and Tachibana alive, with Kōichi even more guilt-ridden over his inaction.

Kōichi returns home after the war is over to find his parents dead and his village destroyed. But out of the rubble comes Noriko (Minami Hamabe), a young woman who has also lost her family but is taking care of an orphaned infant named Akiko. The three form a family of sorts, although Kōichi can’t help but feel like he should be dead as well, and denies himself any attempt at love or happiness.

Kōichi finds work aboard a minesweeper boat amidst evidence that the same creature that attacked Odo Island has been mutated into an even more powerful beast by U.S. atomic tests. After the monster destroys both U.S. and Japanese warships and heads for Tokyo, it’s left to the Japanese people to defend their country and very existence against the wrath of Godzilla – even with no military force and barely any weapons.

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

Just as the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki pervaded the original 1954 ‘Gojira,’ the specter of war and its existential threat to any country hangs over ‘Godzilla Minus One.’ Directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki – one of Japan’s most acclaimed genre filmmakers – the film is emotionally and thematically grounded in its lead characters, easily among the most well-developed in any sci-fi movie, let alone a Godzilla film. Kōichi, despondent over his inability to sacrifice his life and despairing over his future, personifies Japan itself in the aftermath of the war, with Godzilla acting as a metaphor for whether Japan will even continue to exist after its defeat.

It’s the character drama in the foreground that gives ‘Godzilla Minus One’ its emotional heft, providing a narrative in which the magnitude of the stakes and the characters’ personal investment in them are palpable. Yamazaki guides his excellent cast (Kamiki, Hamabe, and Aoki are all outstanding, as is Hidetaka Yoshioka as the nerdy scientist who formulates the eventual operation to destroy Godzilla), while wisely doling out the title monster’s appearances for maximum impact.

And make no mistake, with Godzilla’s four or so major set pieces in the film, Yamazaki makes the beast more genuinely frightening than he’s been in years. The battles at sea are epic and exciting, while the central attack on Tokyo’s Ginza district is truly horrific. Yamazaki does not spare us the human cost or the scale of the apocalyptic destruction; Godzilla’s heat breath creates an effect very much like a nuclear explosion. This is not a Godzilla movie for little kids.

Godzilla has been through many incarnations throughout his/its long career onscreen, but diehard fans generally agree that the original movie – which was nothing less than a poignant expression of grief over the atomic devastation that rained on Japan just nine years earlier – is still the best. Expertly balancing the human drama with the monster mayhem, while giving both meaning and power, Takashi Yamazaki has delivered possibly the best Godzilla movie since the first one, and certainly the one that comes closest to the original in tone and spirit.

    The Big Green Guy

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

Godzilla has gone through many different visualizations during his nearly seven decades onscreen, from the original, stocky man-in-suit of the early films to the ill-advised walking iguana of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 misfire. In ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ he hews closer to the classic look: with short(ish) arms, thick legs, and a stocky body – at least in his final version. He’s a little more reptilian and perhaps agile when we first meet him, although he mutates throughout the course of the film into the much larger, more powerful, stand-up-straight iteration that dominates most of the movie.

This is one angry Godzilla, perhaps the angriest and meanest of them all. The King of the Monsters has evolved over the years from nuclear terror to kid-friendly superhero to reluctant protector of Earth and back again, but the G-beast we meet in ‘Minus One’ may be the most ruthless of them all. Just one look at his blazing eyes says it all. And his atomic breath this time – in which the plates on his spine and tail not just light up but emerge out of his flesh – is less like a living flamethrower and more like a concentrated burst of lethal energy that erupts into an unmistakable mushroom cloud.

By the way, the VFX in ‘Godzilla Minus One’ are remarkable, and the film itself reportedly cost the Japanese equivalent of $15 million. That’s the catering bill for most Hollywood tentpoles, and yet Yamazaki and his team make this movie look like eight times more than its actual budget.

How does ‘Godzilla Minus One’ fit into the existing canon?

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

The ‘Godzilla’ franchise, which turns 70 in 2024, encompasses some 37 films, including 33 produced by Japanese studio Toho and four produced in Hollywood (one by Sony and three from Warner Bros., with a fourth on the way from the latter). The main Japanese series is broken up into different eras, and each era is more or less self-contained, with a basic continuity. Each new era has pretty much rebooted the monster and the series.

So where does ‘Godzilla Minus One’ fit into this? It’s part of the ‘Reiwa’ era, which as of now only contains three animated films and two live-action: this one and ‘Shin Godzilla.’ Both live-action entries are standalone features, and ‘Godzilla Minus One’ is set in the late 1940s, several years earlier than the very first movie, ‘Gojira,’ which was released and ostensibly took place in 1954.

Yet ‘Minus One’ is not a prequel, although with a little bit of strained retconning, it could perhaps serve as one. Instead, it could be seen as a self-contained semi-reboot of the Godzilla origin story, a second story adjacent to the original film, or perhaps even a loose remake of the first film. Its mood and themes echo those of the original – focusing on the grief, shame, and anger of post-war Japan – yet it tells the story in its own fresh way while paying vast amounts of respect to the original movie, right down to the use of Akira Ifukube’s classic Godzilla theme. And the door for a sequel is wide open.

    Final Thoughts

'Godzilla Minus One' opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.
‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in U.S. theaters on December 1st.

While the original ‘Gojira’ is one of our favorite science fiction/monster movies and there are many worthy entries in the series overall (including a couple of the American ones), ‘Godzilla Minus One’ is the first in our view to have the same impact as the 1954 film that kicked the entire franchise off. It’s not perfect, of course – there are spots where it’s a little too sentimental or melodramatic – but this is a movie that not only delivers on the kind of giant monster action we all want to see, but gives us three-dimensional human characters we care about and a central premise that carries real gravitas. This is the Godzilla movie that we’ve been waiting for.

‘Godzilla Minus One’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

What is the plot of ‘Godzilla Minus One’?

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, ‘Godzilla Minus One’ takes place just after World War II, when Japan has no self-defense force and no armaments. The movie asks the question: What happens if Godzilla comes to Japan while it is completely disarmed? Meanwhile, after losing his honor in the war, Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) creates a surrogate family with Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) just when Godzilla attacks again.

Note: This interview was conducted with the use of an interpreter.

Moviefone: To begin with, Yamazaki-San, can you talk about developing the screenplay and what you wanted to do differently with the Godzilla mythology?

Takashi Yamazaki: My intention when I sat down to write the script was that Godzilla is big and is massive. So, it’s hard sometimes. Sometimes the story is told where you switch to Godzilla and then you switch to the human story, and they end up kind of existing independently. But I really wanted to make sure that they were intertwined in a balanced way so that the human drama and whatever’s going on with Godzilla had the right balance. I think especially it’s also reflective of the first movie where there was a good balance with Godzilla and the human story. So, I wanted to make sure of that and the other component about having that balance is that they both must be as interesting or else one is going to win over the other, the Godzilla or the human story is going to win over the other and create this imbalance.

MF: Kamiki-San, can you please discus your character, where he is emotionally when the film begins, and why he feels like he has lost his honor?

Ryunosuke Kamiki: I haven’t personally experienced any war, so coming into the war aspect of this film, I really wasn’t sure about my approach. I started doing research and reading, of course talking with the director, and then I started also looking into those who have experienced war and how it affects them both before they go to the war and after they come back. So, I just emotionally put myself into those circumstances and I can’t say for sure if I was able to achieve anything, but I did my best to live in those circumstances.

MF: Can you talk about the surrogate family that Shikishima creates with Noriko and Akiko and how they give him the strength to live?

RK: I feel that before Shikishima meets Noriko and Akiko, that he’s questioning himself, “Should I live, do I even deserve to live?” Noriko and Akiko create a place for Shikishima to be and to exist. Then on top of that, Godzilla comes back. That faux family dream is kind of destroyed, and Shikishima then turns into vengeance.

MF: Yamazaki-San, can you talk about the VFX you used to create the movie and how you wanted this version of Godzilla to look?

TY: So, when it comes to the design for Godzilla, for example, I was very deliberate in making him be the most powerful of all the Godzillas that have come before. The great thing is that I was able to design Godzilla myself so I could just use a 3D software tool. I wanted it to be a Godzilla where if I found it selling at a store, that I would want to buy it. So, I was able to create a Godzilla to my liking. Now, the VFX, you must keep in mind that unlike Hollywood, generally Japanese budgets are lower and usually crew as well are smaller than what’s available in the U.S. But we were still aiming for a Hollywood-level VFX. This is something I’ve always done as a director, is to constantly be checking the VFX. So VFX, a lot of time is about trial and error, but as soon as someone’s done adjusting something, I would go and check right away. Other productions might just do a check once a week or whatever, but I am constant, I’m doing multiple checks a day. So, in that way, that’s how the VFX workflow was.

MF: Finally, for both of you, why do you think Godzilla as a character has lasted as long as it has and is still so popular around the world today?

TY: It’s the concept of an animal or object absorbing so much evil energy, or the negativity of the world, that it takes shape. And I also feel that Godzilla is what is taking shape, and it’s up to us humans not to kill it necessary, but to calm it. This needs a cycle every couple of decades. I think maybe it’s just the timing that we need to be reminded and go through the exercise of visualizing your worries, evils and whatever’s going on in the world, and going through the journey and going through this process of calming those negative energies in the form of Godzilla.

RK: I think in the world of Godzilla, each generation are under their different circumstances, and they must fight against Godzilla in that context. But I think when you’re going through those battles, the values of those people at that era are reflected. So, I think it’s important for people now to be able to put a mirror up to yourself and just reflect what your values are right now in this day. So, I think that’s what really resonates with people around the world. It’s a good time to reflect and obviously fun to see how Godzilla is defeated by each generation.

  • TV Review: ‘’Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’

Kurt Russell in 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,' premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Kurt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Launching on Apple TV+ on Friday November 17th with two episodes (and a new episode arriving weekly after that for eight weeks) ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ expands the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off with 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and has continued through movies such as ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (2017) and the most recent example, 2021’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’.

And while those were produced as a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary, the latter has now partnered with Apple’s streaming service to deliver more stories set in the same universe (albeit without most of the characters).

You might wonder how a TV series can pull off the sort of giant (pun intended) action as the movies, and while the show naturally has to be on a smaller scale, it still has the hefty budget of Apple to create some effective scenes of giant beasts.

What works about ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?

With much more connective tissue to the cinematic “Monsterverse” than you might expect (it kicks off, for example, with a cameo from ‘Kong: Skull Island’s Bill Randa, played by the movie’s John Goodman), ‘Monarch’ treads a careful path between trying to replicate what worked in the movies –– because let’s be honest, they have been very changeable in quality –– and forging its own identity.

Focusing on a handful of characters whose lives have all been impacted by the Titans in different ways was a smart move, because it allows for a lot of drama between some compelling human beings trying to figure out a way forward. One storyline follows Anna Sawai’s Cate Randa, who discovers that her recently-deceased father had a whole other life and family in Tokyo, including half-brother Kentaro (Ren Watabe). That sets them on a collision course with Monarch in the modern day (or at least 2015).

The real highlight, however (as you might be able to guess) is the canny casting of Kurt and Wyatt Russell playing different ages of the same character, in this case Lee Shaw. We first meet the man back in the 1950s, where he’s involved in the effective birth of Monarch as an organization alongside a younger Randa (here played by Anders Holm) who is working with (and eventually married to) fellow scientist Keiko (Mari Yamamoto).

The two actors do a fantastic job of making you believe this is the same man (not too tough given the familiar resemblance), sharing tics and actions and giving Shaw some real depth.

Kurt Russell brings a convincing world-weariness and spark to the role of the older version, who is essentially imprisoned in a retirement home run by Monarch. It’s not long before he’s out and helping the likes of Cate on their investigation, though.

And when called upon to deliver on the monster spectacle, the show doesn’t hold back, flashing back to the Godzilla clash in San Francisco in ‘Godzilla’ and further back to humanity’s first encounter with the giant reptile.

But it’s not just the OG Titan who has their moment here; ‘Monarch’ is loaded down with plenty of different, new creatures, including one in the snowy wastes of the Arctic.

‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’: Script and Direction

Created by TV veteran Chris Black (‘Severance’, ‘Mad Men’) and comic book writer Matt Fraction (Marvel comics’ ‘Hawkeye’), ‘Monarch’ has both highs and lows when it comes to its creation.

Some sequences, such as an impressive moment where Shaw, Randa and Keiko investigate a disused nuclear facility swarming with creatures, or Cate’s experiences in the subway monster incursion shelter in Tokyo.

There’s a real feeling of comprehensive world building here, expanding on what has been created for the movies in interesting fashion.

Not every character works as well as Shaw or the others –– filling out the supporting cast are a mixture of tropey types, some of whom do receive a little more exploration and the main story of Cate and Kentaro sometimes trips over the line into melodrama early on. And there are times (albeit few of them) when the effects or production design ambition outstrips the show’s capabilities.

There was a big risk involved in trying to extend the “MonsterVerse” on TV screens, but with Apple’s considerable budgetary backing and some great casting choices, ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ works more than it doesn’t.

Though the selling point might be the combined power of the Russell father and son and some of the monster moments, ‘Monarch’ also does the work to fill in the gaps between, meaning that it’s worth watching even when a giant creature isn’t on screen or we’re not watching a Russell do their thing.

And the mystery element (fueled by what we already know from the movies) also works, even if the odd clue here and there feels like ideas that have been brought to screens before.

‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch.

Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and son Wyatt Russell across two different time periods), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows.

The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Who else is in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?

In addition to the Russells, the series’ cast includes Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.
