    • Actor Teri Garr has died at the age of 79.
    • She’s best remembered for her performances in ‘Tootsie’ and ‘Young Frankenstein.’
    • Garr got her start as a background dancer for the likes of Elvis Presley.

Teri Garr, whose bubbly charm made her memorable both on and off screen, has died. She was 79.

Garr will forever be known for her roles in Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’ and the 1982 comedy ‘Tootsie.’

Yet her career, and indeed her life, was much more varied than that, taking in background dancing and regular appearances on comedy variety shows.

    Early life and Career

Garr was born in Ohio in 1944. Both her parents worked in show business: Her father was a vaudeville performer, while her mother was a Rockette who eventually worked in costume production (which would end up being helpful later in her daughter’s career.)

The family, which also included her two older brothers, moved to New Jersey before settling in Los Angeles. Garr’s father died when she was 11.

This is how Garr remembered her mother to the LA Times in 2008:

“She put two kids through school. I have one brother who is a surgeon, there’s me, and my other brother builds boats. She was in wardrobe. She was a costumer at the studio. She would always say, ‘We’re still alive…’ ”

Before she ever considered acting, Garr started training as a dancer, with an emphasis on ballet., and it would play a part in her performing career too.

Still, she dropped out of college to move to New York to focus on acting, where she studied at the Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Her earliest projects allowed her to use her dancing skills. She appeared in six movies starring Elvis Presley, including 1964’s ‘Viva Las Vegas.’ She also appeared on TV variety shows as a dancer.

But she tired of simply being part of chorus and began to pursue more acting work. After meeting Jack Nicholson in an acting class, she scored her first speaking role in The Monkees’ 1968 movie ‘Head,’ which he wrote.

Her film career began to take off, and she won roles in the likes of ‘The Conversation’ in 1974 and, most memorably, in Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’ as Inga, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant.

Garr’s mother was the wardrobe woman on the movie, but that didn’t automatically open the door for her –– the actor still had to audition, and after four rounds, she got the part.

From there, she would enjoy a run of roles in big movies, including playing Richard Dreyfuss’ worried wife in ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and then scored an Oscar nomination for her work alongside Dustin Hoffman in 1982’s ‘Tootsie.’

Among her other credits? ‘The Black Stallion’ and its 1983 sequel, ‘Witches’ Brew,’ ‘The Sting II,’ ‘After Hours,’ ‘Full Moon in Blue Water,’ ‘Waiting for the Light,’ ‘The Player,’ ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and ‘Dick.’

Garr’s notable TV work included her first major role, on the original ‘Star Trek’ series in the episode “Assignment: Earth.”

She sang, danced and played various characters during the 1971–72 season of ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,’ then had recurring roles on the two NBC shows: the short-lived Sally Field sitcom ‘The Girl With Something Extra’ and, as a ditzy policewoman, on the Dennis Weaver cop show ‘McCloud.’

Garr hosted ‘Saturday Night Live‘ three times (in 1980, 1983 and 1985) and was a frequent visitor on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson‘. She also appeared often on David Letterman’s shows.

The actor was also seen on ‘M*A*S*H,’The Bob Newhart Show,’ ‘The Odd Couple,’ ‘Maude’ and ‘Barnaby Jones.’ She made memorable appearances on ‘Friends,’ playing Phoebe’s estranged birth mother.

In the 1990s, Garr was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and it impacted her career going forward, though she continued to work.

This is how she described her condition in her memoir, “Speedbumps: Flooring It Through Hollywood” in 2006:

“My body had a trick or two up its sleeve. A stumble here, a tingling finger there. I was trained as a dancer and knew better than to indulge the random aches and pains that visited now and then. Being a successful Hollywood actress may be challenging, but little did I know that the very body that had always been my calling card would betray me.”

Garr married John O’Neil in 1993. Together they adopted daughter Molly, and the couple split in 1996.

She’s survived by Molly and her granddaughter, Tyryn.

    • His TV and movie also career included ‘The Whole Nine Yards’, ‘Fools Rush In’ and ‘The West Wing’
    • Colleagues and co-stars, including Paget Brewster, paid tribute.

Matthew Perry, who became hugely famous thanks to his role on iconic TV sitcom ‘Friends’, has died at the age of 54.

He was reportedly found in a jacuzzi at his home, but the investigation is ongoing. He’ll be remembered primarily for his work on ‘Friends’ but enjoyed a long career on screens big and small.

Matthew Langford Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on August 19th, 1969. He was raised in Ottawa, Canada, where he attended elementary school alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

His mother, Suzanne Morrison, was a journalist and press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin’s father, while his father, John Bennett Perry, was an actor and model.

Perry made his television debut in 1979 on an episode of ‘240-Robert’ (which starred his father). After moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting, he would go on to book roles in shows like ‘Not Necessarily the News’, ‘Charles in Charge’, ‘Silver Spoons’, ‘Just the Ten of Us’ and ‘Highway to Heaven’. Perry became a series regular on ‘Boys Will be Boys’, which premiered in 1987 and ran for a single season.

In 1989 he had a recurring role on ‘Growing Pains’ followed by a series regular role on ‘Sydney’. He’d continue to guest star on shows like ‘Who’s the Boss?’ ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, and ‘Dream On’.

In 1993 he was a series regular on ‘Home Free’, but his big break would come the following year.

In 1994, Perry landed the role of the wise-cracking Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom ‘Friends.’ Along with co-stars David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc he became a household name.

Across 10 seasons, ‘Friends’ was the most successful comedy series of the ‘90s, earning different generations of fans during its run and in more recent times since younger audiences have discovered it via Netflix.

Perry, along with his colleagues, would end up earning a huge $1 million fee per episode.

And though he never reached the heights of, say, his co-star Aniston in terms of movie fame, he appeared on a variety of shows and films following his time on the series.

His post-friends TV work included appearances on ‘The West Wing’, ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’ and ‘Mr. Sunshine’, a sitcom he co-created that lasted for nine episodes. A reboot of ‘The Odd Couple’ fared better, lasting three seasons.

Though it was not the focus of his career, Matthew Perry appeared in movies both before, during and after his stint on ‘Friends’.

Early work included ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon’, ‘She’s Out of Control’, ‘Fat Man and Little Boy’, ‘Fools Rush In’, and ‘Almost Heroes.’

Other movies include ‘The Whole Nine Yards’, ‘Serving Sara’, ‘The Whole Ten Yards’, ‘Birds of America’ and ‘17 Again’.

Warner Bros. TV, the production company behind friends, issued a statement on his death:

“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

Paget Brewster, who appeared on ‘Friends’ hit Twitter to offer her own tribute:

    Matthew Perry: life struggles

Perry was open about his battles with addiction to both alcohol and pills and spent a considerable amount of time and money getting sober. He ended up founding Perry House, a men’s sober living facility, in his old Malibu beach home. “I really lived life to its fullest and that got me in trouble from time to time,” he said in a US Weekly interview several years ago.

  • Every Christmas Episode of ‘Friends,’ Ranked

Chandler dressed as Santa kissing Monica
    Warner Bros.

“Friends” is known for their epic annual Thanksgiving episodes, but the sitcom also got into the Christmas and New Year’s Eve spirit over the course of its 10-season run. Which holiday-themed installments filled us with cheer and which ones are as stale as an old sugar cookie? We’re ranking all the “Friends” Christmas episodes, from just alright to merry and bright.

Ross talking to Mona about their relationship moving forward
    Warner Bros.

    9. The One With Ross’s Step Forward (Season 8, Episode 11)

It’s hard to believe that a hopeless romantic like Ross who’s been married three times so flippantly would have to much trouble taking his relationship to the next level with Mona, but alas, that’s the focus of this somewhat forgettable storyline. There’s also Rachel’s ragin’ pregnancy hormones and a thing about Chandler’s boss, but overall this holiday episode is ho-ho-ho-hum.

    Chandler in Tulsa office
    Warner Bros.

    8. The One with Christmas In Tulsa (Season 9, Episode 10)

The whole Chandler moving to Tulsa concept never really made sense to us — could it BE anymore unnecessary? Chan Man gets stranded in Oklahoma with a co-worker (Selma Blair) who comes on to him… and nothing happens. But who are we kidding? This is a glorified clip show.

    Rachel with her boyfriend Dany
    Warner Bros.

    7. The One with the Inappropriate Sister (Season 5, Episode 10)

Rachel’s new guy has a way-too-close relationship with his sister, which makes a few laughs and just an all around feeling of yuckiness. Watching Phoebe deal with her tough stint as a Salvation Army donation collector makes up for any discomfort, because she can make any situation funny.

    6. The One Where Rachel Quits (Season 3, Episode 10)

Seeing Rachel quit her very first big girl job at Central Perk is like an end of an era, but it’s nice to see her take matters into her own hands and follow her dreams, even if the path to those drams involves making more coffee. Phoebe exclaiming “God bless us every one” a la Tiny Tim makes this episode a festive little treat, albeit somewhat of a throwaway in the significance department.

Ross at Central Perk talking to Phoebe and Chandler
    Warner Bros.

    5. The One with the Girl From Poughkeepsie (Season 4, Episode 10)

“Monica, Monica. Have a happy Hannukah. Saw Santa Clause. He said hello to Ross. And please tell Joey, Christmas will be snowwww-yyy. And Rachel and Chandler…elrjalkfjdkfjs.” Phoebe’s Christmas carols are the best Christmas carols.

    Ross and Rachel talking
    Warner Bros.

    4. The One with Pheobe’s Dad (Season 2, Episode 9)

Joey and Chandler’s unconditional support of Phoebe when they come with her to potentially track down her real dad is what the holiday spirit is all about. And of course Monica would make the building’s maintenance person holiday cookies instead of tipping them. Oh, Mon.

    Ross is holiday armadillo
    Warner Bros.

    3. The One With the Holiday Armadillo (Season 7, Episode 10)

Perhaps the most memorable “Friends” holiday episode due the outrageous sight gag of Ross dressed up as a phony holiday mascot so he can teach Ben about his Jewish heritage. It’s pure Ross ridiculousness, like only he could pull off.

Ross and Monica doing the routine
    Warner Bros.

    2. The One With the Routine (Season 6. Episode 10)

Ross and Monica may have had their fair share of fights growing up, but we totally believe they spent hours on end choreographing an intricate dance to be performed at New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. We love seeing these two goofballs when they’re on the same team in all their unapologetic Geller-ness.

    Chandler, Ross and Joey talking
    Warner Bros.

    1. The One with the Monkey (Season 1, Episode 10)

Chandler imposes a no-date rule for New Year’s Eve, but of course everyone ends up coupled up for the holiday. This is where we get to see Phoebe and David’s short-lived love story before he leaves for Minsk — one of the best romantic mini-arcs of the series. Naturally, the clock strikes midnight and each member of our beloved gang is alone again, but they’re never really by themselves because they’ll always have each other. Aww.

According to the chain, the pop-ups will be “gram-worthy” and “selfie-friendly,” and feature that iconic orange couch from the Central Perk set, on which Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey enjoyed many cups of coffee — and lots of silly banter — over the show’s 10 seasons.

  • ‘Friends’ Officially Leaving Netflix for WarnerMedia Streaming Service, Which Now Has a Name

‘Friends’ Officially Leaving Netflix for WarnerMedia Streaming Service, Which Now Has a Name

    Warner Bros.

“The One Where ‘Friends’ Leaves Netflix” is coming: WarnerMedia announced the official name and programming lineup for its new streaming service on Tuesday, revealing that it will be the exclusive home of the beloved sitcom beginning next year.

That means that Netflix will be bidding farewell to one of its most popular programs, and the streaming service confirmed the sad news in a bittersweet Twitter post on Tuesday.

“We’re sorry to see Friends go to Warner’s steaming service at the beginning of 2020 (in The US),” the tweet said. “Thanks for the memories, gang.”

The move was long expected, after WarnerMedia revealed its plans last year to launch its own standalone platform. Netflix had to do some expensive financial wrangling to keep “Friends” in the fold for all of 2019 (and ward off rumors of its premature departure), but apparently couldn’t justify the financial toll of securing it in perpetuity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia shelled out a whopping $425 million for a five-year exclusive contract for the series.

But if you think “Friends” is all that the Warners service has to offer, think again: The new platform, called HBO Max, will feature not only films and TV series from the Warner Bros. and New Line libraries — including DC properties, the “Fantastic Beasts” films, and recent hits like “A Star Is Born” and “Crazy Rich Asians” — but also HBO content including “Game of Thrones,” “Big Little Lies,” and the upcoming “Watchmen” series.

Other highlights include original movies from Reese Witherspoon and Greg Berlanti; numerous original series, including an animated “Gremlins” prequel; popular series like “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Pretty Little Liars”; and content from a host of networks including Turner Classic Movies (“The Wizard of Oz” gets a big shout-out in the above promo), Cartoon Network, CNN, The CW, and TBS, among others.

HBO Max is expected to launch in early 2020.

    Jimmy Kimmel Live still
    Jimmy Kimmel Live/YouTube

The six stars of “Friends” live large in TV fans’ hearts and memories and so, too, does Marcel the Monkey.

Matt LeBlanc recently appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to promote his sitcom “Man With a Plan,” and the subject of “Friends” came up. At that point, Kimmel couldn’t help but ask about the show’s little primate, giving LeBlanc (Joey) the chance to share some cute stories about Marcel (whose real name is Katie).

After joking about trying to buy Katie, LeBlanc spilled that David Schwimmer (Ross) wasn’t such a big fan of working with the monkey.

“I like animals. Yeah, the monkey was really cool,” LeBlanc said. “Schwimmer not so much. …  He’s the one that had to work with it the most, so he was like, ‘Again with the monkey?’”

LeBlanc continued to reminisce about working with Katie, telling a story about a time she misbehaved on set. Watch below. The conversation turns to “Friends” at 2:07 and to the monkey at 3:09.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
