  • 2019 Emmys Will Hold Host-Less Ceremony on Fox

2019 Emmys Will Hold Host-Less Ceremony on Fox

    Television Academy

The Emmys are taking a page from its awards show sibling and going host-less for its 2019 ceremony on Fox.

Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier announced today that the 71st Emmy Awards, which will air September 22, will not feature a host for the first time since 2003 (when it also took place on Fox).

The Emmys also went host-less in 1998 (on NBC) and 1975 (on CBS). The Emmys rotate among each of the Big 4 broadcast networks.

Fox does not have a natural host, anyway, since it does not air any late night shows. The last time Fox hosted the Emmys in 2015, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg hosted.

(At the time, the cop comedy aired on Fox; it has now moved to NBC.)

Collier noted that several longtime, award-winning series have concluded this year, including nominee-leading “Game of Thrones” and “Veep.”

“The Oscars did very well. That was something we paid attention to,” he explained. “This is a unique year for some of America’s favorite shows and producers came to conclusion that spending more time on those was the right thing to do.”

The host-free Oscars actually rose in the ratings over the previous year. ABC has hinted that it may continue that format for the next ceremony.

  • Which Fox Properties Will Survive Disney’s Axe After ‘Dark Phoenix’ Flop?

Which Fox Properties Will Survive Disney’s Axe After ‘Dark Phoenix’ Flop?

    20th Century Fox

OK, so “The New Mutants” is likely never seeing the light of day after the flop of  X-Men film “Dark Phoenix.”

But does that mean the X-Men franchise is dead now that Disney owns the Fox property?

Hardly. Today, Disney announced that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is inheriting Fox’s comic book heroes, including the X-Men. So, continue dreamcasting the new Wolverine, people.

However, Disney is axing the majority of the existing Fox film development slate and “refocusing output,” after the studio posted a $170 million operating loss in Disney’s fiscal third quarter.

What else is safe, besides the X-Men?

James Cameron’s sequels to “Avatar” are on track, as well as more “Planet of the Apes” movies.

And potential awards magnets, including Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story,” the Amy Adams thriller “Woman in the Window” and Brad Pitt’s astronaut drama “Ad Astra,” are still happening, although “Woman in the Window” has been bumped to next year.

Disney CEO Bob Iger also said indie label Fox Searchlight will continue to make feature films and and also make movies for Disney+. However, Fox’s film divisions will be producing significantly less movies than before the Disney purchase.

“It will probably take a solid year, maybe two years, before we can have an impact on the films in production. We’re all confident we’re going to turn around the results of Fox live action,” Iger said.

  • Disney Wants to Reboot ‘Home Alone,’ Night at the Museum’ And More Fox Films

Disney Wants to Reboot ‘Home Alone,’ Night at the Museum’ And More Fox Films

    20th Century Fox

While Disney is busy axing in-the-works projects from newly acquired 20th Century Fox, it’s going full steam ahead on rebooting some of Fox’s most popular films.

Family-friendly movies “Night at the Museum,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Home Alone” and “Cheaper by the Dozen” (which was already a reboot of the 1950 film), would be rebooted for the studio’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed today.

“We’re also focused on leveraging Fox’s vast library of great titles to further enrich the content mix on our [direct to consumer] platforms,” said Iger.

Whether those films will be reborn as feature films or TV series, we don’t yet know.

In addition to Disney’s “vault” offerings, new original “Star Wars” and Marvel series, there will be 300 hours of classic Fox content when Disney+ launches November 12.

The subscription price is $7 monthly. An enhanced streaming package, with ESPN Plus and Hulu will cost you $12.99, the studio announced today.

  • Seth MacFarlane Orville to Move to Hulu for Season 3

Seth MacFarlane Orville to Move to Hulu for Season 3

    Fox

Seth MacFarlane’s space comedy “The Orville” is going through a wormhole from Fox to Hulu.

At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, MacFarlane announced that the series — which he created, writes, and stars in — will blast off to a new home for Season 3.

“The Orville” was slated for a midseason premiere on Fox, but production demands seemingly made that impossible.

“As the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network,” MacFarlane said in a statement. “So, we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show.”

“The Orville” is produced by 20th Century Fox Television, which is now owned by Disney. The company now has controlling interest in Hulu. This could be a matter of MacFarlane distancing himself from the network Fox (which is now a separate entity) and/or Disney wanting to keep their properties in-house.

The show is set four centuries in the future, and follows Captain Ed Mercer and his crew as they explore new planets and undertake diplomatic missions. Season 3 will debut on Hulu in late 2020, a year and a half after Season 2 aired.

“Lego Masters” is crossing the pond.

The British reality competition series has already inspired an Australian edition, and now it’s headed stateside. Fox has ordered “Lego Masters” for an unspecified number of episodes, THR reports. The project is produced by Endemol Shine North America and Brad Pitt‘s Plan B.

“Lego Masters”  is “bold, fun and unlike anything else of television,” according to Rob Wade, Fox’s president of alternative entertainment. It pits teams of two against each other in Lego-building challenges. Ultimately, the top teams face each other and compete for the trophy.

“‘Lego Masters’ has everything you want in a reality competition: an incredibly quirky and unique twist on a brand revered by billions of people, exciting team-based battles driven by creativity and a premise that’s ultra-family friendly,” Wade said, per THR.

The show was created by the production company Tuesday’s Child and has aired two seasons so far in the U.K. Meanwhile, the Australian version premiered in April. Both have had solid ratings, hence the decision to bring it to North America.

Karen Smith and Steph Harris of Tuesday’s Child will executive produce the U.S. version alongside Endemol Shine North America’s Sharon Levy, DJ Nurre, and Michael Heyerman, and The Lego Group’s Jill Wilfert and Robert May. Fox has not yet announced a release date for “Lego Masters,” but the fun is coming.

  • Lee Daniels Announces That ‘Star’ Is Getting a ‘Movie of the Week’ Wrap-Up

Lee Daniels Announces That ‘Star’ Is Getting a ‘Movie of the Week’ Wrap-Up

    Fox

Ever since it was canceled in May, Lee Daniels has been fighting to find a new home for his Fox series “Star.”

In a video posted to Instagram today, Daniels announced: “The bad news is that ‘Star’ is not going to be picked up for series, but the good news is that we’re doing a movie of the week to wrap up things up for y’all.”

Daniels did not reveal any details about where or when “Star” finale would appear, or if all the cast members would be back.

The series, which starred Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady, and Ryan Destiny as a musical trio, debuted in December 2016 as a lead-in to “Empire.” It also costarred Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt.

Since it was a was a Fox series, it seems unlikely a finale would air anywhere else. However, spokespeople for 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment did not respond to Deadline‘s request for comment today.

Daniels has previously promised that viewers “have not seen the last” of “Star” and vowed to create “closure” for fans of the show.

  • Taika Waititi Working on Animated ‘Flash Gordon’ Film for Fox/Disney

Taika Waititi Working on Animated ‘Flash Gordon’ Film for Fox/Disney

    Jasin Boland/Marvel Studios

Filmmaker Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “What We Do in the Shadows“) is one of the most original voices to break into Hollywood in ages, and he’s got the insanely busy schedule to prove it. Now, he’s been tapped to help the newly merged Fox/Disney figure out the best approach to adapting a classic character.

Deadline has the scoop that the mega studio has enlisted Waititi to help “crack” a new version of “Flash Gordon,” the sci-fi comic series starring the titular hero. According to the trade, this adaptation will be animated, though it’s unclear if Waititi is simply being brought on in a supervisory role to oversee the project’s start, or if he will actually write and direct the adaptation himself.

While Deadline reports that they’ve heard it’s the latter, additional sources with connections to the filmmaker told the trade that “it’s too early to gauge” the extent of Waititi’s involvement. So fans will have to wait and see before they get too excited just yet.

But Waititi is certainly a natural fit for the quirky source material, especially if Fox/Disney want to lean into the campier aspects of the character. The last attempt at making a feature film version of the series resulted in 1980’s “Flash Gordon,” and that flick is best remembered for its outrageous cheese factor and over-the-top Queen theme song.

    Stay tuned.

Another actor has signed on for the upcoming “BH90210.”

Ivan Sergei has been cast as Tori Spelling‘s husband, Deadline reports. The show is based on the real lives and relationships of Spelling and her former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-stars Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, and Brian Austin Green. They’ll play heightened versions of themselves that are reunited when one of them suggests doing a “90210” reboot.

Sergei’s character, Nate, is an ex-hockey player hoping to break into professional sports announcing. In real life, Spelling is married to TV personality Dean McDermott, and they have five children together. The role on the show is a recurring one.

Sergei has had a number of TV roles in the past. He starred in “Gravity,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “Jack & Jill.” Additionally, he worked with Spelling on the TV movie “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?” Some of his film credits include “Lafayette,” “Fatal Instinct,” and “The Break-Up.”

The actor will recur on “BH90210,” joining La La Anthony and Vanessa Lachey as cast members who weren’t part of the original series. Anthony and Lachey are also playing spouses; their TV husbands will be Green and Priestley, respectively.

We’re expecting nostalgia and fun when we return to our favorite TV zip code this summer. “BH90210” premieres Aug. 7 on Fox.

  • ‘Empire’ Creator Lee Daniels Confirms Jussie Smollett Is Not Returning to Show

‘Empire’ Creator Lee Daniels Confirms Jussie Smollett Is Not Returning to Show

    Fox

“Empire” will not bring embattled star Jussie Smollett back for its sixth and final season, co-creator Lee Daniels confirmed.

Daniels tweeted the news in response to a report that “Empire” writers were preparing for Smollett’s return as Jamal Lyons.

“This is not factual. Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire,” he wrote.

Last month, when Fox renewed “Empire” for Season 6, the network stated: “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire.’”

Smollett had been written out of the final two episodes of Season 5 while controversy swirled around him.

In January, Smollett claimed to be the victim of a homophobic and racist attack. The case underwent twists and turns, with Smollett later charged with filing a false police report. Those charges were eventually dismissed.

After he was cleared, his co-stars — led by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson — reportedly wrote a letter to Fox advocating for Smollett to return to the show in Season 6.

“We must stand together as a family. A family is there for us in good times and bad,” they wrote.

Smollett’s character, Jamal, was given a happy sendoff in Season 5, marrying Kai (Toby Onwumere) and leaving for the honeymoon.

The much-anticipated “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot has added its first new star. La La Anthony has joined Fox’s “BH90210,” Deadline reports. She’ll star alongside seven actors from the iconic ’90s teen drama.

The upcoming series has “Beverly Hills, 90210” vets Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling all playing “heightened” versions of themselves in a story loosely based on their lives. They’re reunited when one of them tries to get a “90210” reboot off the ground. Anthony fits into the story as the wife of Brian Austin Green.

In real life, Green is married to fellow actress Megan Fox, but as mentioned above, this series isn’t totally true to life. Anthony’s character will instead be a well-known hip-hop artist and pop star named Shay. She’s the family’s breadwinner, while Green is the one who stays at home with their three kids. She’s described as “used to being the center of attention” but also “surprisingly down to earth.”

Anthony has made a name for herself as a TV personality and actress. She got her start as as a VJ on MTV’s “Total Request Live” and has since gone on to act in shows such as “Power,” “Daytime Divas,” and “Star.” Her credits also include film roles such as “Chi-Raq” and “Think Like a Man Too.”

“BH90210” comes from CBS TV Studios and Fox Entertainment. The seven “90210” vets are all executive producing alongside co-showrunners Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, and Paul Sciarrotta.

The show premieres Aug. 7 on Fox.
