  • New Images Tease ‘Stranger Things’ 4 Volume 2

If, by now you’ve finished watching the approximately 576 hours of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Volume 1 (okay, more like nearly nine hours), two things are probably true: you have Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” stuck in your head and you’re eagerly anticipating the next Volume.

Netflix is throwing us all a tiny tease of what we can expect via some new pictures from Volume 2 which, let’s not forget, comprises two episodes running nearly four hours when watched together.

Picking up a year or so after the explosive end of Season 3, the first volume’s episodes find Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his family living in Southern California, having made the smart choice to move away from Hawkins, Indiana. While Eleven is having trouble fitting into a new school, she’s soon informed by Sam Owens (Paul Reiser) that her particular set of mysterious skills are needed back in Hawkins.

There’s just one small problem with that plan: she doesn’t have them anymore. Yet back in Hawkins, things continue to be, well, strange. Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) are facing their own challenges, moving on up to Hawkins high school and all the potential bullying, hormonal issues and fashion challenges that presents.

But possibly having an even harder time is Sadie Sink’s Max Mayfield, who is still grieving the death of brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who sacrificed himself in the big battle.

They’ll need real help, as something even more terrifying is on the way and a giant conflict is bubbling away, with some of it tied to the creepy new location of the Creel House. Then there’s poor old Jim Hopper (David Harbour), locked away in a prison in Kamchatka, Russia. At least he’s alive, but for how long?

The end of Season 4’s first volume saw Mike’s sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer) trapped in the Upside Down by new big bad Vecna and friend Steve (Joe Keery) in a bad way after being attacked by bat creatures.

These new pictures could be considered a spoiler – unless the shot of Nancy with the gang is a flashback – but show the various storylines we’ve been following, including Mike and friends’ attempt to find Eleven, her digging into her tragic lab past alongside Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), Hopper and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) trying to get out of Russia alive and the characters in Hawkins making plans to take on Vecna (who, it is revealed, also has ties to Eleven’s past).

“The final episode has more FX shots than the entirety of Season 3,” co-creator Matt Duffer told Empire magazine after the first Volume dropped.

“There’s an hour-long chunk in the final episode that just doesn’t stop,” adds his brother and fellow show boss Ross. “It’s the most complicated thing we’ve ever attempted to do. It’s all tension and dread, with a run-time that would be long even for a movie. Then – well, everything goes to hell…”

Yeah, because life is always so peachy keen and easy for the Hawkins crew! ‘Stranger Things 4’ Volume 2 lands on Netflix on July 1st.

  • New ‘Ghostbusters’ Movies, Shows and More on the Way

Gil Kenan, Logan Kim, Ernie Hudson, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures EntertainmentTony Vinciquerra and Director Jason Reitman
(L to R) Gil Kenan, Logan Kim, Ernie Hudson, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures EntertainmentTony Vinciquerra and Director Jason Reitman at Echo-Fest on the lot of Sony Pictures in celebration of Ghostbusters Day.

There was a lot of talk a few years ago – around the time that Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ was about to come out – about a big new universe being built around the idea of spook chasing. Visions of a Marvel-style connected series of stories (a GBCU?) danced in Sony’s heads, but back then it was not to be.

Now, though, given the success of ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ last year, it appears that the traps have been sprung, the containment facility breached, and all manner of ghostly goings-on are in the works, with a day – the same day the original 1984 ‘Ghostbusters’ was released, calendar fans – dedicated to announcements about the future of the franchise.

First and foremost was word that Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who co-wrote ‘Afterlife’ (which Reitman also directed) are busy on the script for the sequel. Little was revealed about it other than it promises to chronicle “the next chapter in the Spengler family.” That points to the return of Phoebe (McKenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and their family for more ghost hunting.

And the movie’s codename, “Firehouse” confirms (as with the shot of Ecto-1 driving into the city at the end of ‘Afterlife’ plus Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore re-opening the original base of operations) that the new movie returns to the familiar environs of New York.

    Ernie Hudson
Ernie Hudson at Echo-Fest on the lot of Sony Pictures in celebration of Ghostbusters Day.

We also learned that Dark Horse has plans to publish a ‘Ghostbusters’ comic series that will bridge the gap between ‘Afterlife’ and the upcoming sequel.

Reitman and Kenan have also been developing an animated movie based on the concept, though didn’t expand on what that might focus on. Could Feig’s gang finally get their due again on screen? Or is this a whole new team? Either way, the pair is busy with the ‘Afterlife’ sequel, so the actual creative duties are being handled by co-directors Chris Prynoski and Jennifer Kluska and writer Brenda Hsueh.

And that’s not all! There is also a plan for a new ‘Ghostbusters’ animated sequel, an interesting development, since the original characters already came to TV twice at least, via ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ and then ‘Extreme Ghostbusters’. This new show is at a very early stage so far, with no writer attached to oversee it just yet. Still, despite their packed schedule, Reitman and Kenan will also have a hand in that.

There was also an emotional moment as Ivan Reitman Way – dedicated to Jason’s late father, the man who produced and directed the first two ‘Ghostbusters’ films – was unveiled on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, along with the announcement of a virtual reality training simulator called ‘Ghostbusters VR Academy’ that will be cropping up in locations around the country.

It’s clearly a good time to be a ‘Ghostbusters’ fan, and Sony will no doubt be hoping that we’re gonna know who to call for years to come.

  • New ‘Stranger Things 4’ Trailer Promises War is Coming

Just when the residents of Hawkins, Indiana (population: dwindling fast) thought that they’d finally put supernatural threats behind them following the traumatic events of the Battle of Starcourt, the new trailer for ‘Stranger Things’ fourth season suggests that their troubles are far from over. War is coming… and no-one is safe.

And that includes those such as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his family, who moved away to Southern California at the end of the last season.

Not only is Max struggling with loss, but she also appears to have develop some interesting new abilities of her own, if the shot of her floating above the others is anything to go by.

    dssovBxO

Whether it’s her or someone else achieving that, they’ll need the help, as something even more terrifying is on the way and a giant conflict is bubbling away, with some of it tied to the creepy new location of the Creel House.

Then there’s poor old Jim Hopper (David Harbour), locked away in a prison in Kamchatka, Russia, where life seems to be just as rough – what we must wonder now is how he gets free? We’ll get that answer, plus some flashbacks to fill in other story gaps in a season that promises to wrap the plot up.

For those who might not have seen the announcement a couple of months ago, the new season is so epic and huge that the creators (and Netflix) have opted to split it in two.

“With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, ‘Stranger Things 4’ was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” wrote the Duffer brothers. “Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, Season 4 will be released in two volumes.”

Expect the first batch of episodes on May 27th, with the second haul following on July 1st. Bad news for those who were looking forward to their latest ‘Things’ binge, but good news in that the season will be able to contain more of the sprawling story.

  • Review: ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Mostly Recaptures the Magic

Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Logan Kim in 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'
Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Logan Kim in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

Opening in theaters on November 19th is ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife,’ which is the fourth film in the franchise and a direct sequel to ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Ghostbusters II.’ Written and directed by Jason Reitman (‘Up in the Air’), son of the original film’s director Ivan Reitman, the new movie is set over 30-years after the original and follows a group of kids in Oklahoma who discover their town is plagued with ghosts and that they have a mysterious direct connection to one of the famed Ghostbusters. The new film stars Mckenna Grace (‘Captain Marvel’), Finn Wolfhard (‘It’), Carrie Coon (‘Avengers: Infinity War’), and Paul Rudd (‘Ant-Man’), as well as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver reprising their roles. The result is a really fun movie that has fantastic new characters but relies heavily on nostalgia and basically copies the first film’s plot.

After she is evicted from her apartment, Callie Spengler (Coon) movies her kids, Phoebe (McKenna) and Trevor (Wolfhard), to her recently deceased estranged father’s abandoned home in Summerville, Oklahoma. The town is experiencing unusual daily earthquakes, while Phoebe and Trevor adjust to their new life. Trevor gets a job at the local burger joint, so he can be closer to Lucky Domingo (Celeste O’Connor), the girl he likes who is also the Sheriff’s daughter. Meanwhile, Phoebe goes to summer school and makes a new friend, Podcast (Logan Kim), a young boy obsessed with recording everything. Trevor and Phoebe are discouraged by their mother to learn about their grandfather, who they never knew, but eventually Trevor discovers and begins to repair the Ecto-1, while Phoebe finds a hidden ghost trap beneath the floorboards of their house.

Phoebe takes the ghost trap to class and her teacher, Mr. Grooberson (Rudd) explains the history of the Ghostbusters and everything that happened in New York in the 1980s, as they are completely unaware. Phoebe soon realizes that her grandfather was Egon Spengler, a member of the Ghostbusters. When a green ghost appears in Summerville, Phoebe, Trevor and Podcast use the Ecto-1 and a Proton Pack found in Egon’s hidden laboratory to capture the ghost but destroy half the town in the process and are arrested by Lucky’s dad. After a date with Mr. Grooberson, Callie picks her kids up from jail and tells them the truth about her father, that he was crazy and had turned his back on all his friends and family years ago. Believing that her town is about to become ground zero for the apocalypse, Phoebe calls the only people she thinks can help … the Ghostbusters. But with the team disbanded, it’s up to Phoebe and Trevor to follow in their grandfathers’ footsteps, along with Podcast and Lucky, and “suit up” to defeat the ghosts and ghouls plaguing their town.

There are a lot of fun Easter Eggs in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ that I want to try and not spoil, but surprisingly the best part of the film are the new characters and fresh setting. Mckenna Grace is absolutely captivating and creates a fun and rich character in Phoebe. She carries the emotional thrust of the film and builds a character that you want to follow and see more of in the future. Equally, Finn Wolfhard is super fun as Trevor and has great charisma and onscreen chemistry with Celeste O’Connor’s Lucky. Rounding out the foursome is Logan Kim’s terrific Podcast, who makes a great sidekick to Phoebe. In fact, the kids are so great in this film that you don’t really care when the original Ghostbusters show up, and that is part of the problem. Jason Reitman’s script works so well introducing us to the Spengler kids and the town of Sommerville, that it almost seems anticlimactic when Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson appear, which is not really a spoiler since the three actors have been doing press for the film.

Another issue I have with the movie is that, other than a new cast and a fresh environment, the movie is almost exactly the same as the first, pretty much beat-for-beat. I’d say it is kin to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in that sense, which is not a bad thing per se. I’m a longtime fan of the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise and I definitely think this is the best film since the original, but it would have been nice if the basic plot was slightly different. It’s still great to see the “big three” when they do appear, and their appearance does not overshadow the kids. There is also a wonderful tribute to the late great Harold Ramis in the film, which I won’t spoil, but just say that it was done very tastefully and handled better than, for example, Carrie Fisher’s inclusion in ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ There are a few other cool cameos in the movie, as well as an all new version of the fan-favorite Slimer, and mini-Stay Puft Marshmallow men, which I thought was a fresh take on an old concept.

Jason Reitman was definitely the right person to lead the franchise in this direction, and with the fun new characters he has definitely created something I would like to see more of, but in future installments hopefully it will be less reliant on the same old formula. Carrie Coon is strong as Phoebe and Trevor’s mom, struggling to get by and holding deep resentment for her own father. She also has great chemistry with Paul Rudd, who as always is adorably fun to see on screen. Rudd plays his character of Mr. Grooberson with hilarious enthusiasm, and you get the idea that the actor is having as much fun being in a Ghostbusters movie as his character is fighting ghosts. There is a clever twist with Callie and Mr. Grooberson’s relationship, that I have to admit I saw coming, but it still works within the context of the film. In the end, while it’s not as original a movie as you may have been led to believe, Jason Reitman still has found a way to breathe fresh life into the franchise his father created, establishing great new characters for a new generation of fans in a fun and entertaining, yet nostalgia-heavy film.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

  • Latest News about Snow White, Wicked, Black Adam, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, & more

There have been a slew of big-time casting announcements over the last week, from ‘Wicked’ to ‘Snow White,’ and Leonardo DiCaprio taking on one of the world’s most notorious murderers.

We’ve also seen production updates for highly awaited films like ‘Black Adam,’ ‘John Wick 4,’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3.’ As well as a delay for the Star Wars spinoff ‘Rogue Squadron,’ and the release of the final ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ trailer.

If you missed anything this week, Moviefone has you covered!

    CASTING NEWS:

    WICKED

The Hollywood production of the fan-favorite Broadway musical ‘Wicked‘ kicked things into high gear this week when director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) announced on Twitter that he had found his Elphaba and Glinda in Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo and Grammy-winning musician Ariana Grande.

Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, on Broadway, and the big screencasting has drawn some critique from fans, especially for Grande’s casting. However, Chenoweth answered Grande’s critics on Instagram by saying, “You were destined for this role. The best Glinda you will be.”

    SNOW WHITE

Deadline announced last week that Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot was cast to play the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live action Snow White. Directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) in the title role, the adaption will also feature new music from Oscar-winners Benji Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land).

Disney released the original animated version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1938, which was based on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Gadot will next be seen in Netflix’s ‘Red Notice,’ which also stars Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, before appearing next year in the Kenneth Branagh-directed sequel, ‘Death on the Nile.’

    JIM JONES

Yesterday, Deadline reported that MGM has made a seven-figure deal with Leonardo DiCaprio to produce and star in ‘Jim Jones,’ which is about the notorious murderer and what led to 1978’s tragic Jonestown Massacre. DiCaprio will produce through his company, Appian Way Productions, with a script written by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: The Next Level).

In November 1978, under Jim Jones’ leadership, 900 members of the People’s Temple in Guyana, including children, were killed in a mass suicide or gunned down by Jones himself. The events were chronicled in the 2018 CNN documentary, ‘Escaping Jonestown.’ DiCaprio’s casting follows a string of Oscar-nominated performances including ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘The Revenant,’ for which he won, and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’ The actor will next be seen in Adam McKay’s ‘Don’t Look Up,’ which opens in theaters on December 10th.

    PRODUCTION NEWS:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

Production on Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ began this week, with director James Gunn announcing it on Twitter. Posting a photo of the cast assembling on set, the director said, “It’s been a strange and long and at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting.”

    https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1457754577411973122

Gunn also took the moment to reveal that he has cast ‘Peacemaker’ actor Chukwudi Iwuji in Guardians 3. “Chuk has indeed joined the cast,” the director confirmed. “After working with him on ‘Peacemaker’ I wasn’t about to let go of one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with. So, I gave him the role most every big-name actor in Hollywood wanted.”

    BLACK ADAM

While promoting the upcoming ‘Red Notice’ last week, Comicbook.com had a chance to speak with President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions Hiram Garcia about the upcoming DC film, ‘Black Adam.’ The producer talked about the recent ‘Black Adam’ presentation at DC Fandome, and why it was so important to him and Dwayne Johnson to have an opportunity to show the fans what they plan to do with the upcoming film.

“It was really important for us to set the table and make sure that all the fans knew that we weren’t messing around, and that we weren’t making a soft ‘Black Adam.’ It was important for us to show that the first guy who approaches him is no longer on the planet. I think that sets the tone that this isn’t a broad movie, this isn’t Shazam!, or anything like that. We take it very serious. The edge that Black Adam has, if you are a threat, there’s probably not a chance you’re going to get to breathe another breath around this guy. And I think that, that was really important for us to just make a statement and make sure everyone understood. Look, we know what you guys want. We know what this character is supposed to be. We’re going to do our best to make sure that we honor that and turn him into a monster.”

    JOHN WICK 4

Production recently wrapped on ‘John Wick 4,’ and thanks to a photo Tweeted by actor Shamier Anderson (Stowaway), we may finally know the full title of the upcoming film in the Keanu Reeves franchise. While the actor posted several photos from the shoot, one of the pictures is of a drawstring bag, probably a wrap gift, with the title ‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ printed on it.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CWBDjPzlGMw/

Whether ‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ is the film’s true title or not, only time will tell. In addition to Reeves and Anderson, the film will also feature returning cast members Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick, as well as new cast members Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Bill Skarsgard (It), and Clancy Brown (Highlander). The film is once again directed by Chad Stahelski, and hits theaters on May 27th, 2022.

    ROGUE SQUADRON

The new Star Wars spinoff, ‘Rogue Squadron,’ from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has been delayed. The Hollywood Reporter announced earlier this week that the film, which was scheduled to begin production early next year for a December 22, 2023 release date, will be taken off of Disney’s production schedule.

The reason given had to do with scheduling conflicts for Jenkins, who is attached to direct a Cleopatra movie for Paramount starring Gal Gadot, as well as the recently announced ‘Wonder Woman 3.’ ‘Rogue Squadron’ was scheduled to be the Star Wars franchise’s return to the big screen after 2019’s divisive ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’

    TRAILERS:

    GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE

Lastly, this week Sony released the final trailer for their upcoming reboot/sequel, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ Directed by Jason Reitman, son of franchise creator Ivan Reitman, the film stars a new cast that features Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd, as well as returning cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver.

    hcdbMYOk

The new movie focuses on the grandchildren of the late Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), who discover paranormal activity in their small Oklahoma town. The trailer features many references to the original series, including the Terror Dogs, Slimer, and voice-overs from both Aykroyd and Murray.

There may be something strange in the neighborhood — and the cast of “Ghostbusters 2020” is loving it.

Director Jason Reitman posted a first look photo of himself with Carrie Coon, Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard, and “Captain Marvel” actress Mckenna Grace. Also pictured is Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original “Ghostbusters” movie.

In the photo, Grace holds a clapboard that reads “Rust City,” which is likely a fake production name. The movie doesn’t have an official title yet, though the studio and Reitman are referring to it as
    Ghostbusters 2020.”

The new film is a direct follow-up to the original and its sequel, and Reitman has said he plans to incorporate many visual and musical nods to those predecessors.

Not much is known about the plot of “Ghostbusters 2020,” except that it focuses on a single mom ( Coon) and her son (Wolfhard). Paul Rudd has signed on to star and Sigourney Weaver is returning as Dana Barrett. The movie also recently added two young newcomers, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim.

“Ghostbusters 2020” is slated to open in theaters July 10, 2020.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

    Netflix

Remember when the “Stranger Things “kids dressed up like “Ghostbusters” in a Halloween episode?

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the ’80s-set sci-fi show, is in talks to star in the upcoming “Ghostbusters” movie directed by Jason Reitman.

The studio would not comment on plot details, but sources told Variety that the story will focus on a single mom and her family, with Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers,” “The Sinner”) playing Wolfhard’s mom. Whether they become Ghostbusters themselves remains to be seen.

Since the sequel to is being billed as a continuation of the first two ’80s films (and not the femme-centric Paul Feig film), a woman Ghostbuster seems unlikely.

Supposedly, Reitman was reluctant to use anyone from the “Stranger Things” cast (given they’ve already done “Ghostbusters,”) but both he and the executives were “blown away” by Wolfhard’s audition.

Wolfhard recently wrapped Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” which will debut on Netflix in July. He’ll also be in “It: Chapter 2” this fall, as well as “The Goldfinch” and “The Turning.”

    USA Network

Coon played the leader of a cult who was also the overprotective mother of a boy accused of a double murder in the second season of “The Sinner.”

Her movie credits include “Gone Girl,” “Widows” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

  • New ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Sets January Bow on Netflix

New ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Sets January Bow on Netflix

    Netflix

We might not be able to answer where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, but we can say when Carmen Sandiego will be. Netflix announced today via Twitter that “Carmen Sandiego” will debut on January 18th, 2019. Start studying your geography now.

Unlike the earlier iterations of the character, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1991 to 1995 on public television, and “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1996 to 1997, this will not be a live action gameshow but a fully animated endeavor. That makes it closer to the fully animated Fox Saturday morning television show “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?,” which ran from 1994 to 1999. (All of the series were based on a 1985 educational videogame that inspired a number of sequels, including one set in outer space.)

This new show will serve as something of an origin story for the character (voiced here by Gina Rodriguez), an international thief and raconteur, as well as her sidekick Player (voiced by Finn Wolfhard). According to the official release, “We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?” Intriguing!

Hopefully the new series will utilize the same charming combination of education and entertainment that the original series did, since nobody minds learning stuff when it’s this fun.

Then there were a couple slightly different celebrations from the cast. McLaughlin also tweeted cryptically about the holiday, writing, “Stranger Things Day?” and adding the face with monocle emoji. We’re not sure exactly what he wanted to convey there, but we still like it.

Meanwhile, Matarazzo gave fans what they always want in a tweet: more of Dustin and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery).

It’s a happy Stranger Things days indeed. Enjoy celebrating, but don’t forget that it’s Election Day, too!

Goodbye Halloween tricks. Hello summer treats?

“Stranger Things” Season 3 isn’t coming out until next summer, and now we know the story itself will be pretty steamy. Season 2 arrived around Halloween 2017, covering Halloween 1984; and Season 3 will arrive in Summer 2019, giving us 1985’s The Summer of Love.

Cue Huey Lewis’ “The Power of Love” from 1985’s “Back to the Future“!

Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) told Us Weekly about the new season, or at least the start of it based on the scripts he had received by early August:

“I don’t know much about it because we get the scripts as we go along. But yeah, it’s set in 1985, in the summer. It’s the summer of love — that’s all I can say, really.”

Nice. “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 15 has a “season of love” theme and now we have “the summer of love” in Hawkins, Indiana. Loving it.

There’s a lot of potential love to go around Hawkins.

There’s obviously young teen couples Mike and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Max (Sadie Sink).

But there’s also the love triangle of Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), and our boy Steve Harrington (Joe Keery). Will new girl Robin, who works with Steve at his new mall job, join that love … square?

Of course, we’re also hoping that Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Chief Hopper (David Harbour) may connect on a romantic level this year.

Here’s what David Harbour teased to TV Guide on that front:

“I think we’ll start to see him take more risks with these new languages of intimacy and vulnerability and maybe we’ll start to see that he has needs that he hasn’t expressed before. That’s exciting to watch him open up in that way. Of course he’s going to flail and be horrible at it too, which is always fun as well.”

And don’t forget that sexy-funny scene between Mike’s mom Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) and Max’s brother Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery).

Executive producer Shawn Levy had teased to Glamour that Karen and her marital “discontent” will return to focus going forward:

“Karen has some unhappiness that is brewing. I think that makes her vulnerable to all kinds of things in Season 3. … We have much more story for Karen that is linked to her discontent and her dissatisfied sexuality. In the end, there wasn’t room [in Season 2] to service all the ideas. Some ideas got punted to next season and maybe beyond, but we’re not done with Karen Wheeler and her failing marriage.”

Netflix has yet to give “Stranger Things” Season 3 a premiere date beyond next summer, but it’s meant to be “bigger and better” than Season 2.
