  • ‘Pain Hustlers’ Interview: Director David Yates

    vZy15Wxt

Opening in select theaters on October 20th before premiering on Netflix October 27th is the new crime drama ‘Pain Hustlers’ from director David Yates (‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,’ ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director David Yates about his work on ‘Pain Hustlers,’ what interested him about the subject matter, humanizing the characters with humor, and working with Emily Blunt.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Yates and producer Lawrence Gray.

Moviefone: To begin with, what interested you about this subject, and was it difficult humanizing characters whose actions are hurting other people?

David Yates: First of all, I come from a country that has a public health system that’s universally accessible and free at point of use, and is geared towards helping people stay healthy. So it’s fascinating to me that a system exists that operates in a slightly different way. We knew nothing about the opioid crisis in the UK. I read Evan Hughes’ article, it was my introduction to something that had been going on for years and years in America. So it was shocking to me, and it felt immediately compelling to craft and build a story around Evan’s article. Secondly, I think it was really important, as we created our characters inspired by the story, to introduce the audience to characters that we could still empathize with and understand. A case in point is Dr. Lydell, who’s the dodgy doctor who writes all those prescriptions, and effectively kills a large number of people in doing so. But we didn’t want to fashion a monster, someone who just seemed like a villain. So Brian d’Arcy James plays him in such an interesting way. He’s a lonely guy, he’s going through a difficult divorce, and he doesn’t have many friends. So, we kind of have this portrait of a lost, middle-aged man who’s desperate for connection. But really, he’s doing tremendous harm. But there’s something poignant, quite broken and quite sad about him. That was what we wanted to do with most of our principal characters, to not turn them into villains or monsters. And Emily (Blunt), who plays Liza Drake, we love that character because she is ultimately aspirational, ambitious, a little bit greedy, but she has dreams. She wants to do the right thing, and she wants to do the right thing for her daughter. She wants to follow the path of the American dream, which we’re all presented with, to get us through the gates of the castle, to get us safe, secure, and successful. But in doing it, when the rules are broken, things can go wrong. So, we like the fact that Liza Drake is flawed. We like the fact that she is a little bit shady. That appealed to all of us, especially Emily, in creating that character.

MF: Finally, what was it like collaborating with Emily Blunt on set and what does she bring to a project like this?

DY: She came to set every day absolutely prepped for the role. She knew exactly the corners of the scene that she really wanted to get underneath and find. She’d already sort of triangulated each moment before we even got to set. So she’s super prepped, which, for me as a director, is amazing because you’re ready to go on take one, to see a really fully composed performance. Then after a few takes, you might calibrate slightly and change slightly, but she’s super prepped and a great ambassador for the film. She’s a great supporter of the film, outside of the fact that she was carrying it in terms of an acting role. She was also championing what we were doing with our financiers, with Netflix, and with everybody else. She was a real asset to the movie in every sense. Not just carrying the film as an actor, but in just being by our side when we navigated the film through the inevitable hurdles that you have when you make a film.

    • Jaume Collet-Serra is on to direct a new action thriller called ‘Kate Warne’.
    • Emily Blunt is considering starring in the film as the title character, with Dwayne Johnson producing.
    • The script has been re-written but will still have to wait until the actors’ strike is over.

It looks like we have a ‘Jungle Cruise’ reunion in the works. No, the sequel has not chugged forward much given the dual strikes (though you can bet Disney will be looking to move this one along now that at least the writers’ action is over).

Instead, ‘Cruise’ director Jaume Collet-Serra is boarding the in-development detective thriller ‘Kate Warne’, which is being produced by Dwayne Johnson (who, of course, starred in the Disney ride adaptation).

And the ‘Jungle’ connections continue as Emily Blunt has been considering starring in this one for a couple of years now –– she was first mentioned as circling back in 2021 –– but, as Deadline reminds us, the actors are still on strike, so she has yet to make a formal acting deal.

She’ll be back to negotiating to star when the industrial action is over, but there is no sign of that just yet. Even if she doesn’t end up in the main role, she’s also a producer on the film, alongside Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions.

The Amazon-owned MGM is hoping that with Collet-Serra’s attachment, it’ll move forward once anything can shoot.

What’s the story of ‘Kate Warne’?

‘Kate Warne’ is described as a propulsive action adventure built around Warne, a real life female Sherlock Holmes in a male dominated industry whose singular sleuthing skills paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.

Gustin Nash wrote the first draft of the script, but it has since seen a re-write (before the strike) with ‘Godmothered’s Melissa Stack taking over screenplay duties.

This feels more in Collet-Serra’s wheelhouse –– he’s been known for the likes of Liam Neeson thrillers ‘Non-Stop’, and ‘The Commuter’, while he last made ‘Black Adam’ with Johnson in the title role –– than even ‘Jungle Cruise’ though he’s proved to be adaptable through his career so far.

He’s also been behind movies such as horror pic ‘Orphan’ and shark thriller ‘The Shallows’.

Next up for the director is ‘Carry On’, which sees Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a young TSA agent who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to allow a dangerous package through security and on to a Christmas Day flight.

The cast for that thriller also includes Logan Marshall-Green, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Dean Norris and Josh Brener.

  • Where To Watch Christopher Nolan’s Blockbuster Hit ‘Oppenheimer’

(L to R) Cillian Murphy (as J. Robert Oppenheimer) and writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’

Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic was not only a box-office powerhouse but also delivered compelling performances and stunning visuals.

The film chronics J. Robert Oppenheimer‘s career from the beginning of his studies to his role in the Manhattan Project to the 1954 security hearing. The film used color to differentiate between Oppenheimer’s point of view and Lewis Strauss’ point of view – with color representing Oppenheimer and black and white for Strauss. The difference in color also depicts their personality, where Oppenheimer sees the world in bright colors, while Strauss sees it in black and white.

The official synopsis for ‘Oppenheimer’ is below:

“During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history.”

The film did not use any CGI or VFX to recreate the Trinity Test blast. As we saw with Nolan’s 2020 film ‘Tenet’, the director has always had a knack for creating realistic and explosive moments on film with practical effects. To recreate the atomic bomb detonation, Nolan worked with cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema to capture the explosion on film.

Working closely with special effects supervisor Scott Fisher and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson, they first ran tests by dropping silver particles in an aquarium.

“We built aquariums with powers in it. We dropped silver particles in it. We had molded metallic balloons which were lit up from the inside. We had things slamming and smashing into one another, such as ping-pong balls, or just had objects spinning,” said Van Hoytema.

The explosion was captured in in close-up at variable frame rates, combined with Van Joytema’s IMAX cinematography which filled the screen with an image that is both beautiful and deadly. When this moment is played in the theaters, the film goes silent as the detonation flashes before the deafening blast shakes and resonates in everyone’s core.

While some theaters are still playing the movie, options are limited as the film has passed its 45-day theatrical window. Currently, there is no word on when the historical biopic will be released on digital or streaming. ‘Barbie’, which was released at the same time as ‘Oppenheimer’, is already available on digital. However, it is possible the film remains in theater longer as Nolan requested a longer theatrical window.

The “Barbenheimer” sensation set a box office record this past weekend as fans spill into the theaters for both movies. With endless memes on the internet and fans planning their double-feature viewing strategy for ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, the phenomenon has set the weekend box office on fire. Showing up in a sea of pink for Greta Gerwig’s latest film, ‘Barbie’ opened to $155 million. Not to be outdone, Christopher Nolan’s visually stunning ‘Oppenheimer’ follows with $80.5 million on opening day.

The massive box office number is due to audiences refusing to choose one or the other, making their double feature an event of the summer. As the “Barbenheimer’ trend continues to grow on social media, many small businesses leaned into the theme, creating shirts and accessories to celebrate the release. Fans show off their outfit changes as they go from one movie to the next. Star of ‘Barbie’ Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig have also shown their support by posing for a photo in front of a poster of ‘Oppenheimer’ with tickets in hand.

‘Barbie’ also sets a record high for a movie by a female director, surpassing ‘Captain Marvel’ ($153.4 million) and ‘Wonder Woman’ ($103.3 million). Currently, both films are certified on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with ‘Barbie’ at 91% and ‘Oppenheimer’ at 94%. Worldwide, the movies have earned a combined $551.1 million, with ‘Barbie’ earning $337 million and ‘Oppenheimer’ earning $174.1 million.

A New Record For AMC Entertainment

Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’

Movie theaters struggled with attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have been slow to recover. The opening of both films sent masses to the theaters, setting the highest records since post-pandemic. According to AMC, Saturday was their busiest day since July of 2019. They recorded their fifth-highest single-day US ticket revenues in their 103-year history. AMC also recorded 87,000 members of their Stubs loyalty program members booked tickets for both movies over the weekend.

AMC CEO Adam Aron sends a personal congratulations to both films:

“AMC sends an enormous thank you and congratulations to Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the entire team at Warner Bros., and to Christopher Nolan and the team at Universal Pictures. They’ve demonstrated that well-made, well-marketed films that captivate audiences can open on the same weekend and both enjoy great success.”

One of the main driving forces leading the audience into the theater is ‘Oppenheimer’ being shot with IMAX cameras and offered in formats such as IMAX 70MM. While it’s not the first movie to be shot with IMAX cameras, Nolan’s visionary storytelling and use of practical effects create a theatrical experience that cannot be duplicated at home.

It is likely for the “Barbeheimer” trend to continue well into the summer as fans continue to show up for their chance to see the movies.

    Initial Thoughts

Christopher Nolan has crafted another masterpiece with an epic historical biopic that is as captivating as it is compelling. What begins as a character study eventually unfolds into an intriguing political mystery with unexpected twists and turns. Cillian Murphy gives the performance of his career as the conflicted and complicated J. Robert Oppenheimer, while Robert Downey Jr. also gives one of his finest performances to date as Lewis Strauss, Oppenheimer’s eventual adversary.

    Story and Direction

Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of 'Oppenheimer.'
Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’

The three-hour long movie tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer from his early years studying physics in Germany, to eventually being recruited by the U.S. government to work on the Manhattan Project and the aftermath of the creation of the Atomic bomb. The story is mostly told in flashbacks from both Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss’ points of views. Oppenheimer is defending his actions following WWII in a secret government meeting, while Strauss is addressing a Senate committee as he has been appointed to a cabinet position. We see the events as they unfold as memories for both characters, with Strauss’ in black and white, and Oppenheimer’s depicted in color, which also represents the characters personalities as Strauss sees the world in black and white while Oppenheimer sees bright colors.

Christopher Nolan is unarguably one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his generation and is known for making twisty movies like ‘Memento’ and ‘Inception,’ as well as historical documents like ‘Dunkirk,’ but ‘Oppenheimer’ excels because it does both at the same time and embraces everything Nolan does well. Nolan’s script is smart, cutting back and forth between both Oppenheimer and Strauss’ hearings and their individual flashbacks, and using that to frame the story of creating the Atom bomb. But the movie is also a political thriller, and has a ‘Usual Suspects’ level twist towards the end that you won’t see coming.

Nolan sets an epic tone for the film, which is grand in scope and design, and he gets the very best out of his ensemble cast. Nolan’s use of cutaways to visual effects of atoms, molecules, fire and stars representing thoughts running through Oppenheimer’s head were interesting but thankfully used sparingly. While the film is long at just about three-hours, it goes fast and Nolan uses the most of his time setting the stakes for the drama and allowing his cast room to breathe. The movie also looks gorgeous, thanks to Nolan and the work of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema.

Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in 'Oppenheimer,' written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in ‘Oppenheimer,’ written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Cillian Murphy is best known for playing the Scarecrow in Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ movies and hasn’t really had the chance to show off his talents until now. As the title character Murphy delivers a strong and layered performance with authority that gives the movie a feeling of importance and urgency. Oppenheimer is driven, egotistical, brilliant, self-absorbed and conflicted, and Murphy conveys all of this with very little effort, giving a seamless performance. This is definitely the actors best work, and I would be surprised if he doesn’t get a lot of attention come awards season.

    Robert Downey Jr.’s Performance

Robert Downey Jr is Lewis Strauss in 'Oppenheimer,' written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Robert Downey Jr is Lewis Strauss in ‘Oppenheimer,’ written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most popular actors of his generation, but after a decade of playing Iron Man, it’s easy to forget just how good a dramatic actor he is and this movie helps remind us of that. Despite the title, ‘Oppenheimer’ is almost as much Downey’s movie as it is Murphy’s, and the actor completely holds his own narrative well. While the two actors share few scenes together and Downey’s role is supporting, his character is pivotal to the story and the true antagonist of the film. In a career as impressive as Downey’s, it’s hard to say this is his best performance, but it’s certainly on the short list, and I’m starting the campaign now for Downey to get nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

    Supporting Cast

Matt Damon is Leslie Groves in 'Oppenheimer,' written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Matt Damon is Leslie Groves in ‘Oppenheimer,’ written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Nolan has always assembled incredible casts of actors for his projects, but the abundance of riches here is a bit embarrassing. The movie stars a who’s who of talented actors, and I of course can’t mention all of them, but I will say Matt Damon stands out. Damon plays Leslie Groves, the General that recruited Oppenheimer. The actor plays the role with a bit of his signature charm, which fits the otherwise serious military figure well. Damon also has good chemistry with Murphy, and the two characters forge a nice friendship together.

Surprisingly, Josh Hartnett, who’s been away from the big screen for some time makes a fantastic comeback as Ernest Lawrence, one of Oppenheimer’s colleagues. Hartnett gives a really strong performance opposite Murphy and is a wonderful addition to the cast. Benny Safdie and David Krumholtz also play colleagues of Oppenheimer and both actors bring a lot to their characters as well.

Josh Hartnett is Ernest Lawrence in 'Oppenheimer,' written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Josh Hartnett is Ernest Lawrence in ‘Oppenheimer,’ written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Florence Pugh also stands out and gives a very daring performance as Jean Tatlock, Oppenheimer’s first love. Pugh’s character is sweet and vulnerable, and you understand why he falls in love with her in the first place. But their story is also tragic, and Pugh’s tender performance gives her character a real voice in the movie.

Unfortunately, Emily Blunt’s performance as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, did not work for me. The character was not as well-defined in the script as Jean, and while Blunt is a great actress and did her best in the role, her performance falls flat with her limited screen time. The chemistry between Oppenheimer and Kitty never quite works, especially in comparison to his relationship with Jean, but perhaps that was the point.

I would imagine that this film will be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars next year. I’d be surprised if Nolan doesn’t get nominated as well for both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Depending on how the rest of the year shapes up, he’ll probably walk away with at least one of those awards. Nolan’s been nominated five times before and never won, and right now, this seems like the movie and the year where he might actually win.

I think Cillian Murphy has a great chance of being nominated for Best Actor, and certainly deserves it, but I’m really hoping that Robert Downey Jr. is rewarded for his incredible performance here, as well as his overall body of work. Florence Pugh also has a chance at a Best Supporting Actress nomination, but that will really rely on who the rest of the competition will be. I would also imagine the film will receive several technical nominations as well as cinematography for Hoyte van Hoytema.

    Final Thoughts

In the end, ‘Oppenheimer’ is another Christopher Nolan masterpiece. A movie that works both as a compelling historical biopic, and an intriguing political thriller with brilliant performances from Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.

  • Casting Roundup: Rami Malek to Play Buster Keaton

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’

Ready for some casting news? You know you are. First up, we have word that Rami Malek––who, let’s not forget, won an Oscar for playing a real-life star (Freddie Mercury) in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’––is looking to repeat that trick by embodying none other than cinematic legend and comic genius Buster Keaton in a new limited series.

It all springs from ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves who, when he’s not busy writing the sequel to the 2022 superhero success, is also figuring out the spin-off Penguin TV series starring Colin Farrell as the character, which is headed to HBO Max.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. TV is working with Reeves’ 6th & Idaho Productions company to develop the new series, which will focus on the vaudeville-turned-silent comedy movie star. Ted Cohen, a veteran of ‘Succession’ and ‘Friends’ (there are two very different credits, if ever we saw them) is on board to adapt James Curtis’ biography ‘Buster Keaton: A Filmmaker’s Life’.

That’s assuming Warners can lock down the rights to the book, but with Reeves and Malek both planning to produce and Reeves (despite his busy schedule) aiming to direct the limited series, we’d imagine they sound like a safe pair of hands to most book rights agents.

Keaton, who became famous for movies such as ‘The General’, ‘Sherlock Jr.’ and more was born into a vaudeville family but saw his career wane after striking a deal with MGM and yielding his artistic independence. His wife divorced him, and he became an alcoholic. His career rebounded in the 1940s, he remarried and earned an Honorary Academy Award in 1959.

Reeves and co. are taking the potential series out to streaming services and networks, though you’ve got to think that, given the Warner Bros. TV connection and Reeves overall deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO Max is in with a shot.

Marvel Studios' 'Captain America: New World Order.'
Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain America: New World Order.’

One the other side of the Big Two Superhero coin, there is news via Deadline that ‘Atlanta’ and ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ actor Xosha Roquemore is joining the cast of ‘Captain America: New World Order’.

Disney/Marvel’s latest Cap-focused story will continue the story of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as he grapples with inheriting the mantle (and shield) of Captain America from old pal Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, who likely won’t be in this one).

As seen in Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, Sam initially rejected the idea of following in Steve’s footsteps, leading to the creation of US Agent (Wyatt Russell). But our hero eventually embraced his destiny and will face his biggest challenge yet in the new movie.

Written by ‘Falcon’ showrunner Malcolm Spellman along with Dalan Musson, ‘New World Order’ has Julius Onah directing and Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly and Shira Haas featured alongside Mackie. We don’t, of course, yet know who Roquemore will be playing.

As for the others, Nelson is returning as his ‘The Incredible Hulk’ character Samuel Sterns (AKA villain The Leader), Ford is taking over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from the late William Hurt, Lumbly reprises the role of Isaiah Bradley, a previous super soldier experiment who was imprisoned by his own government and Ramirez is once again playing ‘Falcon’ series character Joaquin Torres, who inherited the Falcon suit from Sam.

Haas, meanwhile, will be Sabra, an Israeli character from the comics whose Mossad connections could prove controversial for the story––assuming they’re not changed for the movie, which is often the case with Marvel comics characters arriving in the MCU.

The movie will be in theaters on May 3rd, 2024.

Finally, Above The Line reports that Alex Wolff is reuniting with his ‘Pig’ director Michael Sarnoski for Paramount’s first spin-off from John Krasinski’s successful ‘A Quiet Place’ movies.

Working from a concept originally created by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods and developed by Krasinski, the 2018 originally saw Krasinski directing and starring as part of a family (also including Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmons and Noah Jupe) who are dealing with a post-apocalyptic world brought about by dangerous, mysterious alien creatures who hunt by sound.

The 2020 sequel, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’, also directed by Krasinski, saw the family still trying to survive in the wake of terrible tragedy.

Paramount is naturally looking to launch a cinematic universe, and ‘Day One’ is the first flag stuck in the ground for that. Originally to be directed by Jeff Nichols (who left to pursue another film project he’d set up), the established script has passed to Sarnoski, who won acclaim for 2021’s ‘Pig’, starring Nicolas Cage and Wolff.

He’s since worked on the screenplay and is now gearing up to direct, having cast Lupita Nyong’o and ‘Stranger ThingsJoseph Quinn in the movie.

‘Day One’s plot remains a mystery for now, though the title points to it being set on the first day that the aliens arrived and began causing chaos (which is glimpsed briefly at the start of ‘Part II’). The characters appear unlikely to interact with Blunt and co., this story heading off in a different direction.

And Wolff is far from a stranger to scary stuff: he’s appeared in movies such as Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary’ and M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Old’.

A Quiet Place: Day One’ will be out on March 8th next year. And if you were wondering what Blunt and the kids have been up to, Krasinski is still looking to make ‘Part III’ of the main film series ready for 2025.

  • Winston Duke and Hannah Waddingham Join ‘The Fall Guy’

Winston Duke as M'Baku in 2018's 'Black Panther.'
Winston Duke as M’Baku in 2018’s ‘Black Panther.’

They may come from very different screen worlds – Winston Duke is currently best known for playing M’Baku in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ (and is a winning part of sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ which just hit theaters), while British theatre actor Hannah Waddingham broke big with TV’s ‘Ted Lasso’ – but the pair of performers are about to unite on ‘The Fall Guy’.

Stuntman-turned-expert action director David Leitch (‘Bullet Train’, ‘Deadpool 2‘) is behind the camera for the new movie, with Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Stephanie Hsu in front of it.

And the concept itself was born from TV series.

Originally created by prolific TV producer Glen A. Larson (whose small screen factory also cranked out shows such as ‘Buck Rogers’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Knight Rider’), ‘The Fall Guy’ ran between 1981 and 1986, and starred Lee Majors as Colt Seavers.

When his movie work starts to dry up, Seavers pivots to become a bounty hunter, using all the know-how he’s acquired to craft film action to track down and defeat swindlers, thieves, bikers, conmen, fugitives, and corrupt officials using his fists and his vehicle skills.

Majors starred alongside Douglas Barr and Heather Thomas as Colt’s colleagues Howie Munson and Jody Banks, who helped him out on his missions. Though the show was often a giant slab of ‘80s cheese TV, the concept clearly has legs, with at least two movies going through development

Word of Leitch and Gosling’s take first surfaced in 2020, then referred to as ‘Unknown Stuntman Movie’ and backing via Universal.

When Taylor-Johnson was cast, we got fresh information as to the storyline for this one, which looks to be largely jettisoning the side-hustle part of the original show.

Gosling is playing the battered and past-his-prime stuntman who finds himself back on a movie with a star he worked with long ago and who replaced him. The problem, however, is that the star is now missing…

Taylor-Johnson will be the movie star that Gosling is doubling, while Blunt is a prosthetic makeup artist that has a romantic past with our hero. Hsu, on screen this year in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ will be a no-doubt harried assistant to Taylor-Johnson’s character.

Duke is on board to play the best friend of Gosling’s character, while Waddingham will bring all of her comic and dramatic chops to the role of the movie’s producer, likely none too happy that her production is going off the rails.

Given Leitch’s experience (and Gosling’s past playing stuntmen in ‘Drive’ and ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’), we’d expect a funny, action-packed movie.

With a script from ‘Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce and cameras rolling in Australia, ‘The Fall Guy’ is taking aim at a March 1st, 2024, release.

  • Lupita Nyong’o Starring in ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’

She’s been part of the ‘Star Wars’ sequels. Starred in more than one Marvel movie. And thanks to both ‘Queen of Katwe’ and Jon Favreau’s ‘The Jungle Book’, Lupita Nyong’o can claim full Disney move status to boot.

So are there any more franchise worlds for her to conquer? Plenty, as it turns out – and she’s starting with Paramount’s ‘A Quiet Place’.

More specifically, the actor has been cast in the spin-off from the John Krasinski-overseen series of sci-fi movies called ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’.

You’ll recall that the movies started life with ‘A Quiet Place’ in 2018, after writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck cooked up the idea of an invading alien species that arrives from the stars. The ravenous creatures are blind, but blessed with incredibly heightened hearing, and driven to attack any human making sounds.

Krasinski did a pass on the script and then agreed to direct, co-starring with wife Emily Blunt and young actors Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, playing a family dealing with the aftermath of the invasion and the imminent arrival of a newborn.

The movie was a big success and was followed by ‘A Quiet Place: Part II’ in 2020, which focused on Blunt, Simmonds and Jupe’s characters in the tragic wake of the first movie. Krasinski returned to write and direct and appears as (spoiler alert) an ill-fated character in a prologue set during day one of the aliens’ arrival.

And that has spurred the creation of this spin-off movie, which will be set in the same world but follow different characters.

    Noah Jupe and John Krasinski
(L-R) Noah Jupe and director John Krasinski and on the set of Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place Part II.”

Since Krasinski is busy with other projects (he’s currently directing a fantasy film called ‘Imaginary Friends’, in which he appears alongside Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carell), the job of directing ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has gone to another director.

Originally, that was to be ‘Midnight Special’ and ‘Mud’s Jeff Nichols, but one of his own movies drew him away from the spin-off.

A replacement was found in ‘Pig’ director Michael Sarnoski, working from a script by Krasinski and Nichols.

Little is known about the new movie beyond its setting and the idea that it’ll chronicle people attempting to survive this post-apocalyptic new world beyond the original family. It seems unlikely that Blunt’s Evelyn Abbott will appear.

But we can look forward to her return in a third main ‘A Quiet Place’ film, which isn’t expected until 2025 (not surprising given Krasinski’s schedule). Paramount is hoping to keep building on the movies, with more spin-offs likely if ‘Day One’ is a success.

Nyong’o will be back on our screens as Nakia in Marvel sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, which will be out on Friday, November 11th.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, meanwhile, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 8th, 2024.

Now that the pieces have fallen into place (on a crash pad, we hope), director David Leitch and star Ryan Gosling are pushing their movie adaptation of ‘The Fall Guy’ into top gear.

Emily Blunt joined the cast recently, and the latest addition is Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Originally created by prolific TV producer Glen A. Larson (whose prolific TV production factory also cranked out shows such as ‘Buck Rogers’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Knight Rider’), ‘The Fall Guy’ ran between 1981 and 1986, and starred Lee Majors as Colt Seavers.

Terminator Salvation’ director McG had Dwayne Johnson attached to star back in 2013, with a script from Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller.

Word of Leitch and Gosling’s take first surfaced in 2020, then referred to as ‘Unknown Stuntman Movie’ and backing via Universal.

With The Hollywood Reporter’s story on Taylor-Johnson’s casting comes fresh information as to the storyline for this one, which looks to be largely jettisoning the side-hustle part of the original show.

Gosling is playing battered and past-his-prime stuntman who finds himself back on a movie with the star he worked with long ago and who replaced him. The problem, however, is that the star is now missing…

Taylor-Johnson will be the movie star that Gosling is doubling, while Blunt is a prosthetic makeup artist that has a romantic past with our hero.

The new film will see Leitch – a former expert stuntman himself, who has used that experience in his action-packed directorial career – reunite with Taylor-Johnson after the latter played opinionated assassin Tangerine in ‘Bullet Train’.

With a script from ‘Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce and cameras rolling in Australia, ‘The Fall Guy’ is taking aim at a March 1st, 2024, release.

In other casting news, the ever-busy Florence Pugh has another acting job. And it’s an intriguing one – as according to Deadline, the new movie is Alexander Skarsgård’s directorial debut ‘The Pack.’

Rose Gilroy, who wrote ‘Project Artemis’, which Greg Berlanti now making starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, also scripted this new psychological thriller.

Skarsgård will kick off shooting in March, and the story follows a group of documentarians who brave the remote wilderness of Alaska in an effort to save a nearly extinct species of wolves.

When the crew is brought back together at a prestigious awards ceremony, tensions flare as a deadly truth threatens to unravel their work. This team lived through the harsh elements of the wild but will a secret they share survive the night?

Skarsgård will star alongside Pugh as well as directing.

  • First Teaser for Emily Blunt Western Series ‘The English’

    v278y7lP

We’ve seen Emily Blunt ride horses before and she’s certainly done her fair share of historical drama work. But ‘The English’ represents her first time saddling up for a Western, and also shows that the age of film stars heading up TV projects remains in full force.

For this latest outing, a six-episode limited series premiering on Prime Video, she’s riding deep into Western genre territory, with a side of thriller and, from the looks of the new teaser, a fair dollop of horror for good measure.

Blunt stars in the series alongside Chaske Spencer, who you might recall as Sam Uley from several of the ‘Twilight’ movies but has also been seen in ‘Woman Walks Ahead’ and ‘Wild Indian’. He’s recently finished work on Marvel’s Disney+Hawkeye’ spin-off ‘Echo’ but has Marvel form from an earlier era of superhero TV, having been part of the cast for Netflix’s ‘Jessica Jones’.

Synopsis time! An epic chase Western, ‘The English’ takes the core themes of identity and revenge to tell a uniquely compelling parable on race, power, and love.

An aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt), and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Spencer), come together in 1890 mid-America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. Both of them have a clear sense of their destiny, but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their limits, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome, it draws them closer to their ultimate destination—the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming.

It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea) and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner), into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face-to-face with the future they must live…

Alongside Blunt, Spencer, Rea and Pachner the ensemble also includes Rafe Spall, Tom Hughes, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hinds.

‘The English’ comes from award-winning British writer/director Hugo Blick, whose resume features the likes of ‘The Honourable Woman’, ‘Black Earth Rising’, ‘The Shadow Line’. He wrote and directed all six episodes. And – trivia alert! – way back in his younger, acting days, he played the young Jack Napier in 1989’s ‘Batman’. That has absolutely nothing to do with this new show, but we thought you might find it interesting.

As opposed to streaming services’ more recent swing to weekly releases, ‘The English’ will drop in full on November 11th, and, because it’s a co-production with the BBC, this isn’t a global launch on the service, as British viewers will have seen it the night before on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
