Quentin Tarantino Talks About ‘The Movie Critic’ and More

Though it looked for a while there like ‘The Movie Critic’ –– its details largely wrapped in secrecy even despite leaks that the filmmaker has since debunked –– might be Quentin Tarantino’s final movie.

But despite developing the idea as first a TV series and then a movie, he ultimately decided against it.

Why? Now he’s opening up on a podcast called The Church of Tarantino about his reasons why it wasn’t the follow up to ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’.

This is what Tarantino said about his decision:

“There was a challenge that I gave to myself when I did it. Can I take the most boring profession in the world and make it an interesting movie? Every Tarantino title promises so much, except ‘The Movie Critic’. Who wants to see a TV show about a f***ing movie critic? Who wants to see a movie called ‘The Movie Critic’? If I can actually make a movie or a TV show about somebody who watches movies interesting, that is an accomplishment. I was so excited about the writing, but I wasn’t really that excited about dramatizing what I wrote once we were in pre-production.”

So now we know. But that wasn’t all that was on QT’s mind! He also talked about why he chose not to make the more direct ‘Hollywood’ sequel, which is currently titled ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’. More on that one below…

What did Tarantino have to say about David Fincher directing the Cliff Booth movie?

While we’ve gotten over our surprise that anyone save Tarantino would make the follow up to his most recent movie –– or that there would be a sequel to one at all –– ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ has been shooting for a while, with David Fincher overseeing old pal Brad Pitt as Booth.

Tarantino was asked about why he handed it over to Fincher:

“I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory. I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account.”

At least his ego remains unchanged…

‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ in case you’d missed some of the recent news stories, will be released via Netflix.

What is Tarantino working on now?

While he hasn’t revealed details, Tarantino has said he’s more focused on writing a play than anything to do with movies right now, and explained why in true QT style:

“They pay a lot of f***ing money to get into that seat. There’s no f***ing taping it, there’s no cell phone, you own the audience for that time. They are all yours, they are in the palm of your hand. It’s not just about doing art, it’s about wowing them, it’s about giving them a great night out. This to me is f***ing existing. It’s the last frontier.”

Around a month ago, we learned that, after fiddling with ideas for a while, Aaron Sorkin had come up with a way to follow up 2010’s ‘The Social Network’, which won three Oscars, including one for Sorkin’s screenplay, and chronicled the difficult birth of Facebook.

Now, with the result widespread (and one of the key players in social media harm), Sorkin is developing ‘The Social Network II’ –– not a direct sequel, but instead something peeling back the layers of Facebook and its parent company Meta.

According to Deadline, Sorkin and Sony are confident in the material to begin putting out feelers to actors, with white-hot names Jeremy Allen White (a multiple award winner for ‘The Bear’) and ‘Anora’ Oscar winner Mikey Madison at the top of the list.

No formal offers have been made to either actor, so watch this space to see if they do jump aboard.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that, assuming their deals close, Madison would be Frances Haugen, the data engineer-turned-whistleblower who went to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal with her information. White would play the former WSJ tech reporter who leads the breaking of the Facebook files.

And that’s not all… Jeremy Strong is also reportedly under consideration, and might end up playing debated Facebook creator (and current boss) Mark Zuckerberg this time around, replacing Jesse Eisenberg.

The 2010 original, which as mentioned had David Fincher calling the shots, looked at the difficult evolution of Facebook from college ranking system created –– again, there’s debate as the movie suggests –– by Zuckerberg, played there by Eisenberg.

‘The Social Network’ charts Zuckerberg and his system’s rise to ubiquity and the people who ended up suing for their share of the profits, including the Winklevoss twins and old college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield).

A huge hit with audiences and critics, it earned $226 million at the global box office.

Talking on a live edition of ‘The Town’ Podcast, Sorkin announced that his concern regarding how Facebook’s system has poisoned politics on the personal and national level led him to start work on a new script, which while not a direct sequel to ‘The Social Network’, would follow up on the low-key fears that were subtextual in the original.

Here’s what Sorkin told hosts Matthew Belloni and Peter Hamby:

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6. Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ … There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”

Asked what exactly he’d be focused on, he told the audience that they’d have to buy a movie ticket to find that out.

We do know a little more now, though: Sorkin’s screenplay for the new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal‘s ‘The Facebook Files’, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world’s largest social network.

When will ‘The Social Network II’ be on screens?

Sony has yet to confirm a release date for the new movie.

Back in 2010, ‘The Social Network’ made a big impact on movies and society in general. It charted the controversial rise of Facebook and the even more dicey story of creator –– there’s still debate about that –– Mark Zuckerberg, who continues to be a divisive figure.

That movie earned plenty of praise and awards (more on that below), and now a follow-up is in the works.

Unlike the original, which had director David Fincher overseeing it, this time writer Aaron Sorkin is looking to pull double duty, with Deadline reporting that he hit upon a new concept after looking into the social media platform’s impact on politics and society, and being inspired by a series of articles in the Wall Street Journal.

Sony, which released the original movie, is on board for this one.

Deadline’s sources stress that the new film isn’t strictly a “January 6” movie and will focus not just on the 2020 election but also Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence and countries outside the U.S.

Since the original’s release, Sorkin has made a name for himself as a director, bringing to screens movies such as ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’, ‘Molly’s Game’ and ‘Being the Ricardos’.

While we doubt he’ll look to emulate the style and intensity that Fincher brought to the first film, chances are he’ll find a way to make the new one interesting in its own way.

When will ‘The Social Network II’ be on screens?

Since Sorkin has the script apparently in hand, we may well see this one ramp up quickly –– there’s no production date in place yet, but the main deals for Sorkin and producers Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser are locked down.

The writer/director will start gathering an ensemble for the movie soon and you know this will attract all sorts of established names and rising stars. A bigger question might be whether Jesse Eisenberg will be lured back to play Zuckerberg again, even if it’s in a much reduced capacity. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

As David Fincher continues the preparation work to shoot the follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood’ (yes, take a moment to keep convincing yourself that this surprising project exists), he’s added another cast member to the ensemble.

The movie, which we now know is called ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ will find Brad Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman character from Tarantino’s 2019 film, and will also boast Carla Gugino in its cast.

We’re talking real fast track here.

But what of Sony, which released ‘Once?’ A couple of things… it has a deal to send much of its output to Netflix and ‘Once’ was a special case anyway; Tarantino’s deal for the original included him hanging on to certain rights. Presumably, he could take Cliff where he wanted.

Handing it to Fincher is no bad compromise if we’re not to get another slice of that character from his creator alone.

There’s more! Reporter Jeff Sneider is adding to the story, bringing word that Leonardo DiCaprio has been trying to hash out a deal to also appear in the movie. Television actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stunt double Booth endeavor to achieve lasting success in Hollywood while meeting several colorful characters along the way.

Not the least is Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), who in this alternate version of history ends up saved from death by the members of the Manson family.

The cast also included the likes of Emile Hirsch, Austin Butler, Julia Butters, Margaret Qualley, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Al Pacino, Lena Dunham, Maya Hawke, Sydney Sweeney, and Mikey Madison.

Gugino might be best known for her appearance in Zack ‘Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’, but she’s enjoyed a lengthy and varied career including recent work in ‘The Friend’ and ‘Lisa Frankenstein’.

She’s no stranger to Netflix either, as a longstanding cast member of Mike Flanagan’s projects, including ‘Gerald’s Game’, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’

For ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’, Gugino joins Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki, alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who was the most recent person cast.

When will ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ be in theaters?

Fincher is looking to shoot this one later in the year, so it seems this will likely arrive next year.

But will it be on a big or small screen? While Fincher and Pitt are certainly big names, the director didn’t warrant a theatrical release for his previous movie, ‘The Killer,’ despite his established professional relationship with the streaming service.

Still… a follow-up to a Tarantino movie? Starring Brad Pitt and potentially Leonardo DiCaprio? Surely a candidate for at least a limited theatrical push.

The surprising follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s alt-history drama ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ keeps on moving forward, and now, via Deadline, we know that ‘Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be part of the cast.

While Tarantino wrote and directed the 2019 original, this will be a collaboration between Brad Pitt –– who played stuntman Cliff Booth –– and director David Fincher.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been building quite the healthy career in the last decade or so, including in ‘Aquaman’ and its sequel, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ and ‘Ambulance’.

The actor has a few projects in the works, including Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ Disney+ series, where he stars in the title role.

He also stars and executive produces the ‘Man on Fire’ series for Netflix and will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Elegance Bratton’s crime thriller ‘By Any Means’.

We could potentially see this on screens as early as next year –– an exciting prospect for sure.

We’re still trying to pick our jaws up off the floor at the news back in April that not only was a new movie following Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth from Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ in the works, but A) David Fincher was directing it (with QT’s approval and at the behest of old friend Pitt) and B) Tarantino had written the script for it.

Yet for all the amazement, it does really appear to happening, as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki are now joining the cast.

No confirmed details have emerged about who they might play, though a source for the Reporter does mention that the story called for two key female roles, one who runs a bar and mud wrestling establishment and one a trophy wife. It is unknown yet if Debicki will play one of those or another role altogether.

And as for Caan? We know nothing at this point. Security at this point is right around the level of your average ‘Star Wars’ movie.

What do we know about the ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ follow-up?

But what of Sony, which released ‘Once?’ A couple of things… it has a deal to send much of its output to Netflix and ‘Once’ was a special case anyway; Tarantino’s deal for the original included him hanging on to certain rights. Presumably, he could take Cliff where he wanted.

Handing it to Fincher is no bad compromise if we’re not to get another slice of that character from his creator alone.

There’s more! Reporter Jeff Sneider is adding to the story, bringing word that Leonardo DiCaprio is in the middle of hashing out a deal to also appear in the movie. Caan, son of the late, great James Caan, has forged his own path in the acting world.

The ‘Once’ casting would mark a reunion for Pitt and the actor since Caan appeared in all three of the Steven Soderbergh-directed ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ trilogy of movies.

Outside of those, he popped up on the big screen in ‘Gone in 60 Seconds,’ ‘Varsity Blues,’ ‘Boiler Room,’ ‘Into the Blue’ and, most recently was a writer and producer of comedy thriller ‘One Day as a Lion,’ as well as leading it.

Yet Caan has been spending much of the last decade or so starring in TV, heading up the long-running present-day take on ‘Hawaii Five-O’ and another procedural, ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit.’

With various projects as ever on the go waiting for corporate overlords to give the greenlight, Fincher seems closer on a couple of potential next gigs than others on his list.

First off, there is the Western script ‘Bitterroot,’ written by Michael Gilio, which concerns an elderly rancher whose life savings have been stolen.

He sets out to get his money back by robbing banks and hunting down the thieves — all while being pursued by his son… who is the sheriff.

Comparisons have been made to Clint Eastwood classic ‘Unforgiven,’ so even with the riskier marketplace, this is a script that will surely be produced at some point. And it’s perhaps not surprising that given its long lifespan in the Hollywood marketplace, there has been at least one previous attempt to bring it to screens. Blind Wink Productions and Aversano Films were working on it with Gilio on board to both write and direct and Gore Verbinski to produce back in 2011.

Netflix owns the rights to the script, and Fincher has a long relationship with the company, but it has yet to confirm anything concrete about it.

And the hurdles faced by Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ are likely giving pause. Still, the streaming service has violent frontier limited series ‘American Primeval’ coming out on January 9th, so perhaps it will see how that does before making a decision.

Yet the Western faces some serious competition on Fincher’s To Do list, as the filmmaker has also been developing an American version of giant Netflix hit ‘Squid Game.’

The Korean drama series about the twisted and frequently lethal competition recently released its second season and is racking up huge viewership once more.

Much like ‘Bitterroot,’ we’re still waiting for anything approaching official comment from Netflix about a potential Fincher version, but it certainly feels like a solid match for filmmaker and topic.

A dark, satirical series where morality is questioned, and death lurks around every corner? Surely something he can do well.

Still, we’ll have to wait and see whether it actually surfaces.

David Fincher on His Unmade ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ Movie

David Fincher is one of those accomplished directors whose career is littered with “near miss” projects that fans are eager to see but somehow or other just don’t make it through the studio system.

One of the biggest in recent memory is his aim to craft a new take on Jules Verne’s 1870 adventure/sci-fi novel ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.’ It was in development for a few years via Disney, but ultimately didn’t set sail.

Now, in a new interview with Letterboxd, Fincher is opening up as to why.

What’s the story of ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas’?

Verne’s novel was previously brought to life by Disney in 1954 in a film starring James Mason and Kirk Douglas and in 1997 for an ABC mini-series starring Michael Caine and Patrick Dempsey.

It follows a group of scientists and whalers sent out into the open seas to take down a massive sea creature that’s been attacking ships.

They soon come to discover that the creature is not a monster at all, but a submarine designed by the emotionally damaged Captain Nemo.

What happened to Fincher’s adaptation?

Fincher had the likes of ‘Contagion’s Scott Z. Burns and ‘Se7en’s Andrew Kevin Walker work up drafts of the script. He aimed to have sometime collaborator Brad Pitt in a featured role, but Pitt passed on the script.

Disney suggested Chris Hemsworth, while Fincher countered with Channing Tatum.

As it turns out, Disney was –– to little surprise –– looking for more of a blockbuster take than the brooding, political version Fincher had in mind. According to the filmmaker:

“You can’t make people be excited about the risks that you’re excited about. Disney was in a place where they were saying, ‘We need to know that there’s a thing that we know how to exploit snout to tail, and you’re going to have to check these boxes for us.’ And I was like, ‘You’ve read Jules Verne, right?’ ”

And, as it turns out, it was tone that really scuppered the collaboration. In the original novel and its follow-up, it is revealed that Nemo is in fact royalty who participated in the real-life Indian Rebellion of 1857, an act which led to the death of his family and him fleeing to the seas. Fincher wanted to focus on these details and make it a serious film, but Disney didn’t want it to distract from the fun, action/adventure piece they were hoping to produce.

As Fincher explains:

“This is a story about an Indian prince who has real issues with white imperialism, and that’s what we want to do. And they were like, ‘Yeah, yeah, fine. As long as there’s a lot less of that in it.’ So you get to a point where you go, ‘Look, I can’t fudge this, and I don’t want you to discover at the premiere what it is that you’ve financed. It doesn’t make any sense because it’s just going to be pulling teeth for the next two years.’ And I don’t want to do that. I mean, life’s too short.”

Fincher went on to employ the “really kind of gross and cool and wet and steampunk,” interpretation he had for the movie on an episode of the Netflix series ‘Love, Death Robots’ he oversees called ‘Bad Travelling.’

And it’s quietly ironic that Disney recently bought from AMC and released –– at least on Disney+ in the UK –– an adaptation of the Verne novel that does keep the politics and Nemo’s grudge in place.

Following the release of his most recent movie, Netflix release ‘The Killer,’ there has been plenty of speculation about what David Fincher –– he of ‘Se7en,’ ‘Fight Club’ and other classics –– might do next.

Sadly for fans of the much-missed serial killer/FBI thriller series ‘Mindhunter,’ it appears that’s still not on the table.

Most recently, word began to percolate that the filmmaker would be turning his attention to Western pic ‘Bitterroot,’ but a new report from Deadline suggests that he’s now devoting more energy to a long-rumored US version of hugely successful Korean thriller series ‘Squid Game.’

Talk of the ‘Squid Game’ adaptation cropped up again during those ‘Bitterroot’ reports at the time, it appeared that Netflix was still trying to hammer out details such as the budget. Despite its (relatively) limited locations, the series would still be quite something to mount.

Why would David Fincher want to adapt ‘Squid Game’?

Though Fincher is more normally found adapting from other media (such as novels) or generating his own original work, the dark themes and plot turns of ‘Squid Game’ are certainly something he could do well.

After all, this is the director who brought us the twisty, deadly challenges of Michael Douglas movie ‘The Game’ and the corporate/societal satire of ‘Fight Club,’ so we’ll have to wait and see if this one turns from rumor to reality.

And it’s all something to think about as you wait for the second season of the Korean series. Talking of…

Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.

Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway.

But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.

Who else is in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?

Lee Byung-hun returns as Front Man, the game’s leader; Wi Ha-jun, is once again Hwang Jun-ho, a detective who sneaks into the game in search of his brother; while Gong Yoo will be back as the Recruiter, who initially invited Gi-hun to play the game.

New players include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun as well as Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an.

David Fincher Reportedly Directing New Western Drama ‘Bitterroot’

It’s fair to say that the Western is having a mixed time in terms of success at the moment. While Taylor Sheridan’s modern-day take on the genre ‘Yellowstone’ (and its period set prequels) have been doing great business, Kevin Costner (who effectively left the parent ‘Yellowstone’ series to pursue his passion project) has seen giant Western saga ‘Horizon’ stumble at the box office, with theatrical plans for the second film in the franchise currently on hold.

Despite that, it appears David Fincher may be ready to try his hand at an oater, with What’s On Netflix reporting that he’s on board for a Western called ‘Bitterroot.’

What’s the story of ‘Bitterroot’?

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ from Paramount Pictures and eOne.

Michael Gilio, who also wrote the script draft that got ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ into development, crafted ‘Bitterroot,’ which hit the 2008 Black List when it was originally titled ‘Big Hole.’

The movie’s premise apparently concerns an elderly rancher whose life savings have been stolen.

He sets out to get his money back by robbing banks and hunting down the thieves — all while being pursued by his son, who is the sheriff. Compelling, eh?!

Comparisons have been made to Clint Eastwood classic ‘Unforgiven,’ so even with the riskier marketplace, this is a script that will surely be mad at some point. And it’s perhaps not surprising that given its long lifespan in the Hollywood marketplace, there has been at least one previous attempt to bring it to screens. Blind Wink Productions and Aversano Films were working on it with Gilio on board to both write and direct and Gore Verbinski to produce back in 2011.

We’ll caution at this point that Netflix has yet to officially comment on the possibility, though this appears –– according to What’s On Netflix’s sources –– to be coming together quickly, with casting offers out to potential stars.

The ever-busy filmmaker, who last directed ‘The Killer’ for the streaming service, has a couple of other irons in the Netflix fire.

There is a US version of ‘Squid Game’ that is awaiting approval from the company (budget issues are reportedly a sticking point, though you’ve got to imagine Netflix would look to get this made given the original series’ popularity).

And also? Fincher has been circling a ‘Chinatown’ prequel series that would follow the story before the classic movie.

On the movie front, the director has an untitled crime thriller at an early stage of development, but details are naturally scarce.
