    In theaters on August 29th is ‘The Roses’, the new adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel about a married couple whose relationship descends into frustration, deception and all-out war.

    Warren Adler’s novel about a marriage whose passion curdles into bitterness, jealousy and regret has been adapted once before, by Danny DeVito, who reunited ‘Romancing the Stone’ pair Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner for ‘The War of the Roses’, a pitch-dark comedy drama fueled by their existing dynamic.

    Jay Roach and ‘The Favourite’s writer Tony McNamara go a different route for ‘The Roses’, which for much of its running time is a portrait of a seemingly blissful couple whose public façade hides simmering resentments, but is more cold war until it truly ignites in the third act.

    McNamara has long shown a talent for writing believably toxic relationships with enough of a farcical edge to keep it all from being too brutal –– except when it needs to be. His screenplay for ‘The Roses’ is the perfect fodder for two British stars (American audiences may sometimes react the way their marriage counsellor does in the first scene, taken aback by the sheer comic vitriol on display) to trade barbs like consummate pros.

    And Roach, who has blended comedy and drama to winning effect (but also knows how to make farce serve story), was a solid choice to make this, keeping out of the cast’s way and working with them to develop the dynamics in very funny, sharp ways.

    While you do sometimes wonder whether the film would have been better set in the UK, the disconnect between the leads and their American friends/co-workers does add some spice to the story.

    This one really works because of its firecracker central pair; Cumberbatch and Colman may not totally convince as a couple deep in the throes of love and family, but when it comes to subversive, scathing dialogue, they are experts.

    As Cumberbatch’s character sees his professional architect career (and ego) crumble even as his wife’s chef ambitions flourish, they craft excellent performances, bouncing off one another.

    There is a deep bench of comedy performers backing them up, but the standouts here are certainly Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon as Amy and Barry, friends of the couple whose own marriage has seen better days. Credit also to Allison Janney, who pops up for one scene as Colman’s ruthless divorce lawyer, stealing every moment she’s on screen.

    ‘The Roses’ may be more a skirmish than a war, but it is also a reboot that justifies its existence with a very different type of caustic relationship clash and superlative performances from its leads.

    It may not always be a feel-good movie, but that’s not the intent. And it’ll certainly make you laugh.

    ‘The Roses’ receives a score of 80 out of 100.

    There are always concerns when a spin-off of a classic movie is announced. Will it tarnish the legacy of the original? Will it go off in some random direction and end up far less entertaining than the movie from which it derives?

    In the case of 1975’s multiple Oscar-winning drama ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, there is plenty of reason to worry. But with the rights in the hands of producer Paul Zaentz –– nephew of ‘Cuckoo’ producer Saul Zaentz –– it appears the forward movement on a TV take on the story is proceeding with all due caution and respect.

    Talking on indie filmmaking podcast CK Café, Zaentz revealed that he’s made a deal to put a ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ TV series into development.

    What was the story of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’?

    The movie, directed by Milos Forman, was written by Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman, and adapted both Ken Kesey’s book and the play created from it by Dale Wasserman.

    It follows a unruly convict Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), who is sent to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation in 1963 Oregon, and encourages his docile companions to take more control of their lives and defy the tyrannical head nurse.

    Chief Bromden (played in the movie by Will Sampson) is the towering half-Native American patient who pretends to be deaf and mute. Over time, the antics of protagonist McMurphy coax him out of his disguise and he becomes a symbol of powerful resistance and emancipation. The book focuses more on Bromden.

    ‘Cuckoo’s cast also includes Danny DeVito, Scatman Crothers, Brad Dourif, Nathan George, Christopher Lloyd and Vincent Schiavelli, with Louise Fletcher memorably playing the tyrannical Nurse Ratched, who rules the wards with an iron grip.

    Kesey famously didn’t like the film, feeling that it deviated too far from the source.

    While he might not have approved of the adaptation, audiences and critics certainly did; it earned $109 million worldwide on a $3 million budget, and won five Academy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Nicholson, Best Actress for Fletcher and Best Director for Forman.

    What will the ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ TV series focus on?

    Here’s what Paul Zaentz told the podcast about the show:

    “I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season. Following the first season, we’ll see what happens to the Chief after he escapes [from the psychiatric hospital].”

    Beyond that, details are scarce on this one –– Zaentz has yet to reveal who might be writing the show, or whether he has a studio involved.

    And it’s not the first time someone has approached him and the other rights holders about a remake or spin-off.

    Michael Douglas, who was also among the producers on the original, told Deadline as part of a retrospective earlier this year, that the team has been careful in what they agree to:

    “[Paul] has been very selective and I think that was the only time they’ve done one, which is good because so much gets remade these days…as for the series, it was ok, just ok. I wasn’t very much involved, to be honest.”

    The “series” in question was 2020’s Ryan Murphy-produced Netflix series ‘Ratched,’ which charted the earlier days of the title character.

    With Sarah Paulson in the lead, ‘Ratched’ is set in in 1947, when Mildred Ratched begins working as a nurse at a leading psychiatric hospital. But beneath her stylish exterior lurks a growing darkness.

    The show received mixed-positive reviews but hasn’t progressed past its original season. Paul Zaentz was involved as a producer.

    In the podcast interview, he’s clear that he doesn’t think that targeting classic movies for remakes in the traditional theatrical sense is worth it, but that TV can be a place for more nuance and character development, offering the chance to do something fresh.

    When will the ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ TV series be on screens?

    With no creative team, cast or even production company/network or streamer involved yet, it’s far too early to guess when this might arrive.

    Still, Netflix –– which backed ‘Ratched’ and has also been behind TV adaptations of movies such as ‘Ripley’ –– might well be a leading candidate to take this on.

    Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actor and director Chris Pine and Danny DeVito about their work on ‘Poolman,’ why Pine wanted to direct it, how it’s a lover letter to Los Angeles, and DeVito’s experience being directed by Pine.

    Moviefone: To begin with, Chris, how long have you been interested in directing and how did things come together for you to direct ‘Poolman’?

    Chris Pine: I’ve never thought about directing, and the stars aligned because of COVID, really. I had an idea for a pool man named Darren Barrenman that shot around in my brain for two years. Then COVID hit and I was bored and going through a lot of stuff personally. I decided to make it happen, and I tried to hire a writer, but he didn’t really work out, so I decided to write it with my writing partner. Then as I was writing it, I was thinking about it visually, so then it just felt like what I had to do.

    MF: Chris, you’ve called this movie a love letter to Los Angeles. What did you want to say the City of Angels with this film?

    CP: They say write about what you know, so I wrote about Los Angeles and about actors and failed actors and directors and failed directors. It was just the world that I grew up in in Los Angeles, which was kind of one foot on the “Boulevard of Dreams” and one foot in the “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” So, I know this adjacent Hollywood that people know that’s the deep Valley, that’s actors trying to make a buck, who aren’t getting hired. This is my ode less to Los Angeles in many ways, and my ode to them, the people that come to this city and want to be famous and to have their stories heard, and don’t. I’m also a big preservation buff and a lover of Los Angeles architecture of old and not of what we’re doing now. I’m a lover of what we call the red trolley car system back in the day, which if you’ve seen ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ you know how that story went. This is my ode to a time in Los Angeles that I love and to a version of Los Angeles that I’m familiar with.

    MF: Danny, you are originally from New Jersey, but you’ve lived in Los Angeles for a long time. Did you get the vibe of what Chris was going for when you first read the screenplay?

    Danny DeVito: Yeah, big time. There was a vibe with the Biltmore Hotel and the whole idea of the little place that Annette Bening and I, where we live, where he is working as the pool man. So, all of that, the little motels that you find popped up around Los Angeles and the restaurants, and the architecture also really got me. But I think the big thing about coming here and trying to get things going, because it’s the “Boulevard of Dreams”, and broken dreams as well. In that element in the story, from (my character) Jack’s point of view, I tried over and over to make the film that I really wanted. He gives me the opportunity to do it because he is like a dog after a bone about this city thing. Pulling back the onion on that mystery winds up giving me my movie because he finds himself, which is really what basically the inside of this movie is about. The outside is all the architecture and the characters and the fun, but the inside is deeply embedded in what he must find, and that’s himself.

    MF: Finally, Danny, as an actor who has also directed, what was it like for you to work with Chris as a filmmaker and do you like working with directors who are also actors?

    Danny DeVito: Yes. It’s always good. I think that every director, no matter whether you are an actor or not, should take an acting class. You should figure out what it’s like to be on the other side, on this side of the camera and that side. If you want to direct, you should know what this side’s going through. So, if you know that, a lot of actors become directors. Most actors know what an actor goes through, and that makes it a better experience.

    With Colman and Cumberbatch on board to produce as well as taking the lead roles, the new movie will be directed by Jay Roach, best known for the ‘Austin Powers’ films, though more recently applauded for the politically-minded likes of ‘Bombshell’, ‘Recount’ and ‘Game Change’.

    Tony McNamara, who most recently wrote ‘Poor Things’ for director Yorgos Lanthimos (and also penned the director’s ‘The Favourite’, which saw Colman scoop an Oscar for her performance), is aboard to adapt the book.

    When Will ‘The Roses’ Be in Theaters?

    ‘The Roses’ is still in development, so it has yet to find a spot on the packed Disney release schedule. And given that both Cumberbatch and Colman are in-demand actors, it may have to wait until their availability opens up.

    After some rougher Oscar nights (slaps, snubs and that brave but ultimately disappointing low key pandemic version), 2024 very much represented a return to form for Hollywood’s Most Glittering Night™.

    In the sort of performance that would bring a smile to musical number specialist Busby Berkeley’s face, Ryan Gosling’s much-mooted performance of “I’m Just Ken” from ‘Barbie’ proved to be just as much of a showstopper as we’d all hoped it would be.

    Kicking off in the audience as Gosling rose to start singing, he passed a charmed and giggling Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie –– who got in on singing along –– while amusing the likes of Emily Blunt and then the whole audience as he reached the stage and started a big production number of the song, complete with cutout cardboard Barbie heads and some of the movie’s other Kens (Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir among them), Guns N’ Roses’ Slash on guitar, plus a plethora of dancers joining him on stage for a memorable and hilarious highlight.

    “I’m Just Ken” might not have won its Oscar (‘Barbie’s “What Was I Made For?” took the movie’s only award in that same category), but it won the night.

    Presenting Best Costume Design, John Cena proved he’s easily among the most charismatic wrestlers-turned-actors out there, and even more adaptable than Dwayne Johnson. With Jimmy Kimmel cueing up talking of a streaker (one of the most infamous moments of Oscars past), there was a moment where it appeared Cena was having second thoughts about the comedy bit they’d come up with for him to present naked.

    But nope, he arrived on stage in the buff (though reportedly with a modesty sling to hide things that can’t be shown on TV outside of HBO etc.), covering himself with the sealed Oscar envelope for the category. All in all, a moment of naked hilarity.

    All right, so Emma Stone’s Best Actress triumph for her role in ‘Poor Things’ wasn’t a complete surprise; after all, she’d scooped other trophies. But following ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone scoring the Screen Actors Guild award, the tide had turned in the native’s favor.

    Still, it was Stone going on stage, seemingly shocked (did she have Gladstone on her Oscar ballot like many others?), making a heartfelt speech in which she praised her fellow nominees, thanked ‘Poor Things’ director Yorgos Lanthimos and even joked that her dressed, which had broken, had been ripped by her laughing at Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” performance.

    Jimmy Kimmel must have been sweating when Al Pacino, tasked with announcing the Best Picture category, abruptly skipped right past the traditional stage of listing the nominees and went straight to opening the envelope, like a child who can’t wait to tear into their Christmas present. “Here it comes… and my eyes see ‘Oppenheimer‘”.

    Unlike “Moonlight-gate”, where Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mistakenly announced ‘La La Land’ as Best Picture over actual victor ‘Moonlight’ in 2017 (Kimmel’s first hosting gig), Pacino had it right, Christopher Nolan’s movie capping a successful night where it picked up seven gongs. But in skipping over the nominees, Pacino certainly didn’t make for a highlight.

    Old friends (and ‘Twins’ co-stars) Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito reunited for the second time this year (after their State Farm Super Bowl commercial) for a funny bit where they talked about playing Batman villains.

    The highlight, DeVito pointed out Michael Keaton, the most famous of the movie Batman actors, who gamely played along, putting up his dukes as DeVito promised to start a fight after the Governor’s Ball. The only way it could have gone better is if George Clooney had shown up, since he was Schwarzenegger’s Bat-opponent.

    Godzilla Stomps to His First Win

    Cue the classic, bombastic theme tune! ‘Godzilla: Minus One’, whose producers originally didn’t intend to submit for the Oscars as they didn’t think the film stood a chance of winning, actually went home with Best Visual effects.

    The team showed up wearing custom Godzilla shoes and carrying adorable gold statuettes shaped like the classic character. Could the giant lizard himself have shown up to collect? We doubt the Kodak Theater could have accommodated him, sadly.

    This year’s show brought back a segment that had been tried a few years ago where former winners paid tribute to current nominees. Nicolas Cage (who won in 1995 for ‘Leaving Las Vegas’) was enthusiastic in his praise for ‘The Holdovers’ Paul Giamatti, impressed with his dedication to wearing a false eye for his role as grouchy teacher Paul Hunham. “Would I have done that? Hell yes!” Cage said, going on to call Giamatti “brilliant”. The actor didn’t end up winning the trophy (‘Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy took Best Actor) but he must have felt like a winner in that moment.

    Moviefone recently had the pleasure of sitting down in-person with Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks to talk about their work on ‘’Migration,’ their first reaction to Mike White’s script, playing ducks and relating to their characters, Mack and Pam’s relationship, where they would like to travel but have been afraid to, and working with director Benjamin Renner.

    Moviefone: To begin with, Kumail, what was your first reaction to Mike White’s script about this overprotective duck dad?

    Kumail Nanjiani: I thought it was very funny. I thought it was very exciting. There was a lot of thrilling stuff in it, and I was like, “Oh, I would love to play this duck.” I was the duck; the duck is me. I’m scared of outside. That’s exactly who I am. I am this duck. Just as Elizabeth is Pam, I am Mack.

    MF: Elizabeth, what was your reaction to the screenplay, and could you relate to Pam immediately?

    Elizabeth Banks: I felt like Mike White had been listening into my conversations with my children. He loves research and he’s sneaky, so he probably was listening in. (Producer) Chris Meledandri called to offer me Pam. He kind of described it, and I was like, “Oh, yeah. I’m going to get this right away.” I hesitate to say woman, but I will just say I related it to being a woman who is looking to break out, who’s been taking care of everybody, and just wants a sunny day where she doesn’t have to worry about anything like, “Is it so hard to want to put my feet in the warm sand?” She’s looking for support from her family, who she does nothing but support all the time. I really felt like, “Wow, women are going to relate to this.”

    MF: This is odd to say about two ducks, but Mack and Pam have a very healthy and loving marriage. Can you talk about that?

    EB: Well, we talked about how we’re both longtime married people, and we talked about how this movie wasn’t just about the family. It really is about this couple, and reconnecting, and giving compromise and respect. Giving each other the opportunity to show what the other is capable of, and surprise and grow.

    KN: It’s compromise and communication and learning from each other. All that stuff. I mean, two people make something greater than themselves.

    MF: Kumail, Mack is afraid to travel and leave his home. Is there anywhere in the world that you would love to travel, but have been afraid to, for any reason?

    KN: Yeah. I don’t want to say the names of those places. I don’t want to upset any tourism boards. But there are a couple of places I can think of right now that I’d love to go to, but I think it’s just a little bit dangerous. I do love traveling. I like going to other places. Emily (V. Gordon) and I do that a lot, we try. We’re lucky enough that we get to do it if we want to, and we try and leave the country twice a year, not for work. So very lucky that we get to do that because I like all kinds of food. That’s the main reason to go anywhere.

    MF: Finally, Elizabeth, can you talk about the recording process and working with director Benjamin Renner?

    EB: Well, he’s so detail oriented. I love that, right? It’s like he’s got an idea about something, and he was good at communicating. Then he also remained open if it was like, “Oh, my gosh. That tickled me. I never thought about it that way.” So, I really felt there was a great back and forth in collaboration. He worked so hard on this movie. It’s so beautiful. We really did not see the finished product until the very end. I mean, those details get laid in so late. I’ve seen it three times and I’m going to take all my nephews.

    What is the plot of ‘Migration’?

    The Mallard family is in a bit of rut. While dad Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England Pond forever, mom Pam (Elizabeth Banks) is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax (Caspar Jennings) and duckling daughter Gwen (Tresi Gazal)—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.

    In theaters on December 22nd, ‘Migration’ is Illumination’s latest family-focused animated adventure which offers up some laughs but feels like it draws on situations we’ve seen in other movies such as ‘The Croods’ and ‘Finding Nemo’.

    A likeable voice cast does their best with the material, but ultimately this feels like a lesser offering from the company, one that seems unlikely to spawn a franchise in the way that ‘Despicable Me’s Minions have taken over. But perhaps that’s no bad thing?

    Is ‘Migration’ Decent Escapist Entertainment?

    As the year draws to a close, we suppose close to Christmas is as good a time as any to release a movie where a family decides to escape winter and travel somewhere tropical to enjoy a different locale; after all, plenty of people will be making that choice in the coming days and weeks.

    The twist here, of course, is that the family in question are mallard ducks who have lived in the same pond for years, which is just the way the dad of the brood likes it –– he’s fond of terrifying his ducklings with tales of danger lurking beyond their seemingly tranquil home. It’s a worthwhile setup for a family comedy, but it does rather feel like both DreamWorks and Pixar have both gotten their first with the concept of the scared father convinced that death awaits anyone foolhardy enough to step outside of their established boundaries. And of course, the lesson once again is that you need to find the bravery within to put that idea to the test, because perhaps it’ll lead to some fun and family bonding.

    There’s not much that’s fresh here, but ‘Migration’ is inoffensive enough –– and may likely appeal to those parents who are sick of the chattering Minions (though they show up in a short film that plays before the movie in theaters).

    Perhaps the most surprising element of the movie is the fact that Mike White –– currently best known for creating the spiky, subversive ‘The White Lotus’ on TV –– is behind the script for the movie. It’s far from his first family-friendly work; after all, he also wrote memorable live-action movies such as ‘School of Rock’. No, we’re surprised because this feels far more sanitized than that movie, as though the screenplay when through a buffing process once it left his hands to remove any interesting rougher edges.

    One or two flashes of White’s style still remain, and they give the movie a little bit of extra flair. But for the most part, this is strictly factory standard stuff.

    Director Benjamin Renner came up with the original story for the movie, and here he brings it to life alongside co-director Guylo Homsy. They get solid work from the cast and the Illumination animation team has given the movie a decently interesting visual palette, with a watercolor-infused background, some impressively designed buildings when the birds arrive in New York and well-crafted main characters.

    ‘Migration’: Performances

    A movie such as this lives and dies on the strength of its lead performances, and fortunately ‘Migration’ has some very funny people driving the dynamics. Kumail Nanjiani gives good nervous energy (at least as far as he’s allowed –– his character soon overcomes most of his quibbles, the better to get the plot moving), while Elizabeth Banks is typically spirited as mate Pam.

    The kids are mostly called upon to be funny and weird, and both put in good, while Danny DeVito has less do as their uncle, but still makes the most of the role.

    In supporting roles, Awkwafina is her usual sassy self as the leader of a group of Big Apple pigeons and carries the jokes with which her character is entrusted (a moment with her being struck by buses works thanks to a combination of well-timed repetition and Awkwafina’s committed voice work) . Keegan-Michael Key, meanwhile, is great as Delroy, the parrot that our heroes meet and ultimately help.

    And then there’s Carol Kane, whose typically loopy energy is well served as Erin the heron, who the family isn’t sure whether she wants to help or eat them.

    If you can overlook the very familiar storyline (and life lessons that are less than subtly conveyed), then ‘Migration’ will certainly serve as a decent option for those after some family film time if the pressure of the holidays becomes too much.

    Energetic lead voices, some diverting concepts and well-crafted animation are all in service of something that might have found a little more inspiration, but it’s at least got something to offer.

    ‘Migration’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

    Inspired by the classic theme park ride, Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ is a fun adventure filled with ghastly frights. Directed by Justin Simien (‘Dear White People’), the tale takes place inside a New Orleans manor where a mother and her son stumble upon the 999 happy haunts. This all-age film strikes a good balance of humor and horror with an adequate amount of jump scares that are perfect for the younger audience.

    This isn’t the first time the classic ride got the live-action movie treatment. Eddie Murphy starred in the 2003 ‘The Haunted Mansion,’ but the film was criticized by both critics and audiences alike. The 2003 film received a 13% critics score and a 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The mansion has also been featured in ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion,’ a Halloween special that was released on Disney+.

    Aside from the lore of the ghosts, there is an unexpected story of loss and grief. Ben Mathis (LaKeith Stanfield) was very passionate about his work in the paranormal until a tragic event that led to the loss of his wife. Ben became bitter and morose, giving up on his work in the paranormal until Father Kent recruited him to investigate the mansion. Throughout the film, it is revealed why certain spirits are drawn towards Ben and other individuals with a similar story.

    The official synopsis for ‘’Haunted Mansion” is below:

    Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion tells the story of Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), a single mom, who discovers that the home she and her son share is haunted by irksome ghosts. Hoping to restore domestic tranquility, Gabbie recruits a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid the house of the supernatural squatters.

    From Ride To Screen

    The movie did a great job of adapting the fan-favorite attraction onto the big screen to include many Easter Eggs. Pulling distinguished scenes directly from the ride, such as the Stretching Room and its portraits, the endless hallway, the seance room, and the ballroom scene.

    The film also highlighted characters such as Madam Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis), The Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto), the hitchhiking ghosts, Constance the Bride, and more as some of the spirits haunted Gabbie and crew.

    Director Justin Simien was a former Disney cast member, and with the Haunted Mansion being one of his favorite attractions from the theme park, he and writer Kate Dippold made sure the mansion was presented in its truest fashion.

    ‘Haunted Mansion’ premiered on July 15, 2023, at Disneyland in Anaheim, California and was released domestically on July 28, 2023. The film is no longer in theaters, as it has passed the 45-day theatrical window and is making its way to digital and streaming.

    The popular theme park ride comes to life on the big screen in ‘Haunted Mansion,’ written by Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien. The movie materializes in theaters on July 28th.

    ‘Haunted Mansion’ is a love letter to the iconic theme park ride, filled with references and Easter eggs that will satisfy longtime fans. The horror element is just light enough for a younger audience, with adequate jump scares and ghastly images. LaKeith Stanfield gives a standout performance as Ben, who has an unexpected story of loss and grief that serves as the emotional core of the movie. However, the film focuses on too many storylines, causing the pacing to be uneven.

    The screenplay was written by Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien, a former Disneyland Cast Member. Unlike the 2003 ‘The Haunted Mansion’ starring Eddie Murphy, which portrayed the mansion in a more cartoony manner, the 2023 adaption properly showcases the Haunted Mansion that is known amongst parkgoers. Essentially, the mansion is a character in itself and is highlighted as so.

    In the trailer, the story seemed to center on Gabbie and Travis, the newest residents of the mansion. However, the main focus is really on Stanfield’s Ben Mathis. At the beginning of the movie, Ben is passionate about his work with the paranormal, creating a special camera that spots spirits. Due to unforeseen circumstances, which are later discovered at the end of the second act, a morose Ben emerges, having given up on his supernatural career.

    Using Ben’s story and connecting him to the mansion is quite clever. Father Kent, who had heard of Ben’s work, comes to him with a well-compensated offer – to use his special camera to capture the spirits on film. It is only then Ben agrees to visit Gabbie and Travis at the mansion. At first, Ben tries to remain unphased and skeptical through every supernatural encounter. It isn’t until an unexpected spirit that begins making waves in his every life he is forced to return to the mansion. With the help of psychic Harriet, Father Kent, and Professor Bruce, Ben searches for answers on why Gabbie’s new home is a hotspot for ghosts.

    By telling Ben’s unexpected story of loss and grief, it provides a deeper meaning than just a cursed manor. It dives into the history of the mansion and the fascinating origins of several spirits that reside there.

    Haddish’s hilarious performance stood out with the best story arc. Initially, she was an insecure medium who didn’t feel strong enough to battle the big bad of the mansion, but she came into her own after proving herself capable. Though Haddish’s Harriet was entertaining, the same could not be said with the other characters’ various storylines. There were just too many stories to keep up with, which felt convoluted and unnecessary.

    Just like the ride, ‘Haunted Mansion’ has to strike that perfect balance of humor and horror. It succeeds in most parts, giving solid jump scares and eerie elements. However, many emotional scenes were met with a lighter moment to break up the tension. It isn’t uncommon to use this approach in film, though the jokes that follow a heartfelt moment come too quickly, leaving those emotional scenes feeling less meaningful.

    A Fantastic Tribute To The Iconic Ride

    When a movie is based on an iconic theme park ride such as ‘Haunted Mansion,’ fans will expect to see references and Easter eggs. What this movie does so well is that it gives nods to the ride without feeling out of place. It happens naturally as the characters explore parts of the mansion and learn of its history rather than being shoehorned in for the purpose of an Easter egg.

    Fans of the ride will certainly enjoy seeing the iconic Haunted Mansion being properly featured and highlighted on the big screen. Every Easter egg and reference spotted will leave a smile on your face. Stanfield is fantastic in this role, bringing much heart with his emotional performance. The pacing and tonal shift are uneven as it tries to find the balance between humor and horror and juggling too many storylines. Although it is definitely better than the 2003 adaptation and a bit ambitious with the all-star cast, it is still entertaining and fun for all ages.

    ‘Haunted Mansion’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a man to mince words. If he wants to say something, he’ll say it. In his career, he’s been a successful bodybuilder, an action legend (even if he’s not necessarily known for Oscar-caliber acting) and a politician.

    These days, he’s also known as an online activist, looking to spread positivity and workout tips on social media and beyond. He also hasn’t completely given up on acting, with new Netflix series ‘FUBAR’ due to start streaming on May 25th.

    In the course of promoting that show, Schwarzenegger has opened up for a wide-ranging interview in The Hollywood Reporter, touching on his successes and failures, both personally and professionally.

    The interview includes the former governor of California talking up the progress of future movie projects, including two of his most famous franchises, the ‘Terminator’ and ‘Conan’, plus offering a disappointing update on the ‘Twins’ sequel, ‘Triplets’.

    ‘The Legend of Conan’

    The ‘Conan’ movie series, originally adapted by John Milius from Robert E. Howard’s fantasy warrior, has been in limbo –– at least in terms of projects featuring Arnie –– despite reboots with other actors such as Jason Momoa. And Schwarzenegger knows why.

    Here’s what he says of the “pending”, sequel ‘The Legend of Conan’:

    “It’s been pending for the last 10 years. (Fredrik) Malmberg owns the rights. He comes to me and says, ‘Oh, I have a deal with Netflix,’ and when we ask Netflix, they don’t know anything about it. It’s one of those crazy things. I hope he figures it out. I think you do it like ‘Unforgiven’, where you play the age. There’s a great script out there that John Milius wrote, and others have written one. The story is there. There are directors who want to do it. But he has the rights, and until he sells the rights for one or two movies, or for the franchise, there’s nothing you can do about it.”

    ‘The Terminator’ Franchise

    When it came to one of his most famous franchises –– the one he’s long acknowledged truly launched him as an action icon –– he’s even more forthright. Essentially, the ‘Terminator’ movies are going to move on without him.

    Here’s what Schwarzenegger had to say:

    “The franchise is not done. I’m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to ‘The Terminator’. Someone has to come up with a great idea. ‘The Terminator’ was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly. The first three movies were great. Number four (‘Salvation’) I was not in because I was governor. Then five (‘Genisys’) and six (‘Dark Fate’) didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written.”

    ‘Twins’ sequel ‘Triplets’

    And finally, there’s ‘Triplets’, the sequel to the 1988 Ivan Reitman comedy ‘Twins’ which saw Schwarzenegger playing unlikely brothers with Danny DeVito. The new movie had finally been gathering pace in recent years, with first Eddie Murphy and then Tracy Morgan agreeing to play the third unexpected sibling. But according to the actor, it’s on permanent hold following Reitman’s death, mostly because of the director’s son Jason, a filmmaker in his own right. And Arnie’s not pleased.

    Here’s his comment:

    “Jason Reitman f****d it up! Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, ‘I never liked the idea’ and put a hold on it. I’m developing another movie with Danny; he’s so much fun to work with and so talented.”
