Tom Hardy Still Plans to Make Two More ‘Mad Max’ Movies

    Mad Max: Fury Road
    Warner Bros.

Oh what a lovely day it will be when the next “Mad Max” movie is announced.

Tom Hardy played Max Rockatansky in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the fourth film in the Mad Max franchise. The reboot was meant to restart the franchise, with director George Miller said to have scripts ready and waiting for “Mad Max 5” and “Mad Max 6.” A few months ago, details came out about the ugly legal battle between Miller and Warner Bros., holding up production on the new movies.

Tom Hardy was at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend to promote “Venom,” but he also gave Variety an update on the mad wait for “Mad Max” to resume:

Tom Hardy: “It was always the plan to do three of them, so I think we’re still waiting on being given the opportunity and the green light to go ahead on the next one. But when I engaged on that there was a plethora of material on it.”

Variety: “So you’re waiting for Warner Bros. to green-light it?”

Tom Hardy: “Obviously it belongs to Warner Brothers, so it would be them who green-lit it. But a lot of projects are in radial, you know, you wait for something to land when it’s real, and as soon as it’s real we’ll jump on it.”

Yes, keep the pressure on. The court battle sounded pretty unpleasant, and it didn’t seem likely that Miller and WB would want to work together again. But money is the universal language, and if they know they can get more money out of this franchise maybe that will eventually bring them together for the next film.

  • ‘Mayans MC’ to Intersect With ‘Sons of Anarchy’ But ‘Keep It Sacred,’ Says Kurt Sutter

‘Mayans MC’ to Intersect With ‘Sons of Anarchy’ But ‘Keep It Sacred,’ Says Kurt Sutter

    Sons of Anarchy Season 7
    FX Networks

“Sons of Anarchy” is over, but some of its characters are apparently poised for a new lease on life in the near future.

The show’s spinoff, “Mayans MC,” is set to premiere this fall, and Kurt Sutter delivered some news fans have been waiting for during San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. The co-creator, who teamed up with Elgin James on the series, confirmed at the event that they have plans for certain stories to intersect, Deadline reports. While there aren’t any “points of intersection” yet, there will be before the end of Season 1.

“We’ll see those points of intersection this season and throughout the series as well,” Sutter said.

The two shows take place in the same world, so it isn’t a stretch for there to be crossover between them. However, Sutter says he wants to “keep it sacred.”

“I want to acknowledge that world and find opportunities to circle that, but I don’t want to abuse it,” he said.

In the seven seasons that “Sons of Anarchy” was on, fans sadly had to say some sad goodbyes to popular characters. Because of that, we know we can’t expect to see every reunion we might want to, but at least we’ll get to check back in with some familiar faces when the spinoff arrives.

“Mayans MC” premieres Sept. 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

  • Russo Brothers ‘Very Proud’ of ‘Avengers 4’: It ‘May Be Our Best Work for Marvel’

Russo Brothers ‘Very Proud’ of ‘Avengers 4’: It ‘May Be Our Best Work for Marvel’

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Marvel Studios

Joe Russo thinks the best is yet to come with “Avengers 4.”

He and brother Anthony Russo have given the Marvel Cinematic Universe “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Next May, they’ll give us “Avengers 4,” which will reveal its official title later this year.

In a new interview with Deadline, Joe Russo called the movie “pure” in that it was made back-to-back with “Infinity War,” but before that movie came out. So they weren’t influenced at all by the fan response.

Technically, “Avengers 4” isn’t done filming, since Joe confirmed they are going back for “some additional photography” in a month or so. But they have been in post-production on the movie since the release of “Infinity War,” so it’s basically done. And they are very happy with it.

Deadline mostly talked to Joe Russo about the new Syfy series “Deadly Class,” but here’s the brief portion of their talk about “Avengers 4”:

Deadline: “Going from the small screen to the big screen for a sec, and I’m not going to try to get any spoilers out of you, but coming off the critically and financially home run of Avengers: Infinity War, how does the upcoming next Avengers flick feel for you and Anthony now as filmmakers.”

Joe Russo: “You know, we’re very proud of it. I think ultimately Avengers 4 may be our best work for Marvel. I think we’ve grown with every movie that we’ve made there. We’ve grown with the characters. We’ve grown with the cast. As filmmakers we’re very happy and very excited with the movie.

You know, it’s always an agenda of ours to block out the outside noise because it can lead you to make some bad choices with the material. We’ve learned over the years just to listen to ourselves, and it’s great that there’s two of us that we can have conversations with each other. We can really stay insulated and reinforce one another in our belief in the story that we’re telling. I feel like with ‘Avengers 4,’ because it was made before there was any response to ‘Avengers 3,’ it’s really pure in that regard. The storytelling is very pure. It’s without any sort of external noise creeping in….”

Speaking of the response to “Avengers 3,” this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel set up grief counseling for fans traumatized by the end of “Infinity War”:

    A free donut?! Amazing.

The Marvel SDCC booth also gave Thanos his own “Success” motivational poster:

No new MCU footage was shown at Comic-Con. We’re on standby for the first “Captain Marvel” teasers, and that’s also when we should learn the “Avengers 4” title.

New question: What happens with the Russos after “Avengers 4”? They have yet to announce their next project for Marvel Studios.

  • Johnny Depp Surprised Comic-Con by Showing Up as Grindelwald for a Wizard Power Speech

Johnny Depp Surprised Comic-Con by Showing Up as Grindelwald for a Wizard Power Speech

Johnny Depp, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    Warner Bros

Johnny Depp went Method at Comic-Con for “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.”

He wasn’t on the panel with the rest of the cast, but he showed up at the end of the presentation to make a speech.

In the freshly introduced Comic-Con trailer, fans saw a clip of Gellert Grindelwald making a wizard power speech, and Depp returned to that theme for his in-character address to the Comic-Con audience.

Depp was cheered by the Hall H crowd, and stroked their egos in his speech:

“My brothers, my sisters, my friends. The great gift of your applause is not for me but for yourselves. Therefore applaud yourselves. [The audience did so.]

It has been said that I hate the non-magic, the Muggles, the No-Maj, the can’t spells. I do not hate them. I do not. I say the Muggles are not lesser, but other. Not worthless, but of other value.

Magic blooms only in rare souls. It is granted to those who live for higher things. What a world we would make for all of humanity. All of humanity. We, who live for freedom, for truth. The moment has come to rise up an take our rightful place in the world.”

Then the lights went out and Depp disappeared.

    https://twitter.com/itfansofdepp/status/1020840855706456064

Some “Fantastic Beasts” fans are still not happy with Depp’s involvement, and weren’t happy about his Comic-Con appearance either. But this movie is just the second of a planned five in the series. Since he and Jude Law don’t even have any scenes together at this point in the franchise, we’d better get used to seeing the roles teased out each year.

For now, check out the new trailer and this new poster:

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” opens in theaters November 16.

    The CW

The CW had a big weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. Here are just a few highlights and trailers.

    • “Supergirl”
“Supergirl” is making history with the first transgender superhero. Transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines was cast in Season 4 as Nia Nal (aka Dreamer), described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.” Other new series regulars were announced Saturday: April Parker Jones (as Col. Haley) and David Ajala (as Manchester Black). “Supergirl” returns Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.

    • “The Flash”
“The Flash” Season 5 is adding Chris Klein — remember him, from “American Pie”? — as the new villain Cicada. According to The CW’s press release, “next season’s scourge of Central City” is a “grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans.” And he’s looking “to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time.” “The Flash” returns Oct. 9.

    • “Riverdale”
“Riverdale” Season 3 cast Penelope Ann Miller in the recurring role of Mrs. Wright, the district attorney prosecuting Archie Andrews for murder. She’s described by the CW as “savvy and eloquent,” and “with a conviction in mind, she will weave together disparate moments of Archie’s young life to portray him as a dangerous, violent sociopath who is capable of committing a heinous crime.” “Riverdale” returns Oct. 10.

    • “Arrow”
The “Arrow” panel confirmed that the Longbow Hunters will be introduced in Season 7. According to EW, the Longbow Hunters are a legendary group of assassins Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) recruits to get back at Team Arrow. The three assassins are Red Dart (Holly Elissa), “a ruthless and precise killer”; Kodiak (Michael Jonsson) “a beast of a man with brute force”; and Silencer (Miranda Edwards), a master of stealth. Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), Derek Sampson (Cody Runnels), and Danny “Brick” Brickwell (Vinnie Jones) all returning this season as well. “Arrow” returns Monday, Oct. 15.

  • ‘Walking Dead’ Creator on Andrew Lincoln Exit: ‘He Wants to Do Something Special on the Way Out’

‘Walking Dead’ Creator on Andrew Lincoln Exit: ‘He Wants to Do Something Special on the Way Out’

    The Walking Dead
    AMC

“The Walking Dead” cast and producers will be at Comic-Con today for the official Season 9 trailer and premiere date. (There’s already a Comic-Con teaser, see below.)

Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) will be on the panel, presumably to address in some way all of the chatter about his exit. Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene Rhee) is meant to be leaving after just a few episodes of Season 9, too, but Rick Grimes has been our zombie apocalypse tour guide since he got out of that coma in Season 1.

What is the show without Rick?

In an interview for IMDb, Kevin Smith talked to comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman about Andrew Lincoln leaving.

“It’s looking that way,” Kirkman said, with a little chuckle. He’s notorious for trolling, but his further comments to Smith do make it pretty clear that Lincoln is really exiting the show.

Smith asked how Lincoln leaving affects him as the writer of the ongoing comic book series, where Rick Grimes is still lead character (along with Carl Grimes). Here’s Kirkman’s response:

“It does make the differences between the comic and the show more pronounced. But at the end of the day, it’s all about Andrew Lincoln. This is a human being. This is someone I have known for almost a decade, somebody that I love. He’s been sweating in Georgia, away from his family, for so long.”

Here’s the part that most sounds like confirmation that Lincoln is leaving:

“He cares about the fans. He cares about the show deeply. He wants to do something special on the way out. We have something amazing planned. I wouldn’t want to spoil anything, but anybody who has been a fan of his journey, who loves Rick Grimes, who loves the world of The Walking Dead, you’re going to want to see what we do.”

So now they’re using Rick’s departure — death or otherwise — as a tease to try to get people to watch the show again. A lot of fans have given up along the way, leading to a massive ratings drop.

    Here’s Kirkman’s interview:

The late afternoon (Friday, July 20) Comic-Con panel will feature this lineup, along with the full trailer:

Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, along with executive producers Angela Kang, Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, and Greg Nicotero. The panel will be moderated by Yvette Nicole Brown.

    Here’s the trailer tease:

And here’s the key art AMC already shared, showing new looks for Rick and Maggie after the coming time jump:

  • ‘It: Chapter 2’: Jessica Chastain Posts Awesome Beverly Fan Art as First Footage Hits Comic-Con

‘It: Chapter 2’: Jessica Chastain Posts Awesome Beverly Fan Art as First Footage Hits Comic-Con

    It
    Andy Muschietti on Instagram

It” is almost ready to welcome you back to Derry for “Chapter 2.”

By the way, if you call the number in the keychain above, from “It” director Andy Muschietti‘s Instagram, it gives you an incorrect number message. At least it did for us. Maybe it’ll direct you straight to Pennywise, inviting you to come down and float with him.

At any rate, “It: Chapter 2” shared some footage yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con, but it wasn’t too exciting. And it wasn’t released to the public. Red balloon = popped.

It was mostly behind-the-scenes shots from early filming with the cast — including James McAvoy as adult Bill, Jessica Chastain as Beverly, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Jay Ryan as Ben, James Ransone as Eddie, and Andy Bean as Stanley.

According to IGN, the footage did include a scene with the older Losers Club members reuniting at a restaurant. Bill Hader’s Richie asks the group what they’d like to talk about, knowing full well what they’ll be talking about.

Here’s a more detailed description from Den of Geek with references to Stephen King’s novel:

“In a sequence that is sure to raise an eyebrow of anyone who’s read Stephen King’s magnum opus in prose form (or saw the dippy 1990 miniseries), we are able to quickly glean the adult cast of It: Chapter Two has gathered in a sequence set in a Chinese restaurant. It is the moment where the Losers Club is all reunited for the first time since their summer pact in 1989, now adults who can barely recall childhood or each other.

James McAvoy stands tall as Bill Denbrough, sporting a full luscious mane of hair for those wondering if McAvoy was shaving his head again (Bill goes bald in the book). He is staring incredulously at all his childhood friends gathered in one place, including Chastain as an adult Beverly, and most deliciously Bill Hader as adult Richie.

Banging a tacky ceremonial gong behind him (it is set in suburban Maine), Hader’s Richie shouts out, “What’s up losers?! So what do y’all want to talk about?” At least the way it is edited, James Ransone’s adult Eddie Kaspbrak mutters “holy sh*t” in disbelief. The sequence is part of a sizzle reel that also includes Chastain’s adult Bev being phased by something and checking her smartphone, in a departure from the 1985-set novel.”

The “It” sequel picks up 27 years after the first movie, but also includes the younger stars.

Jessica Chastain already shared a face-morphing photo with young Beverly Marsh star Sophia Lillis, and she shared a new piece of fan art with younger Beverly passing the red balloon to her older self:

Lovely. Yes, Sophia Lillis is the spitting image of a young Amy Adams, but HBO is already going down that road right now with “Sharp Objects.” You can’t typecast Sophia Lillis as Young Amy Adams in Everything.

Here’s a look at the “It: Chapter 2” table read from earlier this month:

And here’s James McAvoy with the young and young-at-heart Losers:

  • Robin Says ‘F*ck Batman’ in DC Universe’s Very Dark First Trailer for ‘Titans’

Robin Says ‘F*ck Batman’ in DC Universe’s Very Dark First Trailer for ‘Titans’

    Titans
    DC Universe

Holy f-bomb, Batman! Captain America would not approve of Robin’s language in the first “Titans” trailer, but the DC Universe is certainly making it clear they are going for a dark, gritty, violent take on The Boy Wonder (and his friends).

The DC Universe is DC’s swanky new streaming service. The “Titans” trailer was shown during San Diego Comic-Con, which is also when DC explained the price tier for the service.

    As TVLine broke it down:

“Those in the United States can pre-order the service via DCUniverse.com for a yearly membership fee of $74.99 (plus tax, if applicable) — which works out to $6.25 a month. Or, at launch time, monthly memberships will be available for $7.99.”

DC explained last month that the service comes with classic TV shows and films, DC Comic books, and new original shows like “Titans,” but also “Doom Patrol,” “Swamp Thing,” “Harley Quinn,” and “Young Justice: Outsiders.”

Brenton Thwaites stars as Robin/Dick Grayson in “Titans,” and here’s more on that series:

“‘Titans’ follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and Rachel Roth (Teagan Croft), a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire (Anna Diop) and loveable Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.”

Here’s the trailer, complete with an f-bomb from Robin (although not to Batman’s face).

“Titans” streams this fall on DCUniverse.com.

First ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Clip Ends Badly for Millie Bobby Brown

    Godzilla: King of the Monsters
    Warner Bros.

Poor Eleven can’t catch a break.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is expected to share its first trailer this Saturday during the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel, but for now we have a teaser and some stuff to play with.

The first photos from the “Godzilla” sequel came out the other day, showing Godzilla’s new atomic breath (!) but also scientist and Monarch employee Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) with her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown).

The first clip shows MBB’s Madison trying to contact someone from Monarch, and not enjoying the response:

However, it looks like the message went through:

And you can also check out this nifty tracker:

    Gadgets! Here’s the movie synopsis:

“The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”

We’ve already been told that MBB’s Madison and Vera Farmiga’s Dr. Emma Russell are kidnapped in the film by “a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures.” Kyle Chandler plays Mark Russell, ex-husband of Emma and father to Madison. He goes on a rescue mission with Monarch scientists Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins, returning from “Godzilla.”

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” opens in theaters on May 31, 2019.

  • ‘Annabelle 3′ Will Target the Warrens’ Daughter, ‘Night at the Museum’ Style

‘Annabelle 3′ Will Target the Warrens’ Daughter, ‘Night at the Museum’ Style

    Annabelle
    Warner Bros.

The “Annabelle” franchise is coming back home to torture Ed and Lorraine Warren’s daughter Judy.

“Annabelle 3” was just teased last night during the ScareDiego panel at Comic-Con.

We already knew it was coming — and taking a July 3, 2019 release date — as written and directed by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote the two previous “Annabelle” movies and “The Nun.”

The first two “Annabelle” movies were prequel spinoffs of “The Conjuring,” but this new movie will drag the paranormal investigating Warrens back into the drama.

    The Conjuring
    Warner Bros.

It certainly sounds like that means Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will star in “Annabelle 3,” since this is about the haunting of their characters’ daughter, but that was not specifically announced during the panel.

    Here’s more from Gary Dauberman:

“I’m still finalizing the script, but it really picks up with the Warrens bringing Annabelle to the place where it can really no longer wreak havoc, which is their artifact room. But, of course, it turns out she can also wreak havoc there. And she really awakens the evil within that room and they target the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, Judy. So, that’s the set-up.”

James Wan, who is producing the film, added this interesting comparison:

“Annabelle basically activates all the other haunted artifacts in that room. So, it’s basically ‘A Night at the Museum,’ with Annabelle!”

    Night at the Museum
    20th Century Fox

Sure! Let’s hope this doesn’t come down to Ben Stiller saving the day.

The great James Wan will be back later this week, of course, to debut the first “Aquaman” trailer. That’s happening Saturday. But now we know a bit more about the third “Annabelle” horror show, which for some reason is coming just in time for next year’s Independence Day. Secret meaning there?
