  • Charlize Theron Admits Having a ‘Rough Time’ With Tobey Maguire on Set

Cider House RulesEven A-list stars have #officeproblems.

In an interview with V Magazine, Oscar winner Charlize Theron admitted she had a difficult relationship with Tobey Maguire on the set of their acclaimed 1999 movie “The Cider House Rules.”

“Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie,” she told interviewer James Franco. “Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time.”

But Theron learned a lot about acting from that experience. “It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else.”

Theron, now starring in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” is no stranger to on-set conflict. She also clashed with Tom Hardy while filming “Mad Max: Fury Road” in the “maddening” isolation of the desert.

As she told Esquire last year, “We drove each other crazy, but I think we have respect for each other, and that’s the difference.”

The Rock welcomed his “good bud and all around bad ass” — no stranger to racing in cars after “Mad Max: Fury Road” — to the “Furious” family by saying, “When MTV asked her how she felt about coming in and playing the villain, her response was classic and the reason why I love that woman.. she said, “I’m coming to mess that shit up!”

Theron joins franchise newcomers Scott Eastwood and Kristofer Hivju. In addition, Eva Mendes will return for the first time since “2 Fast 2 Furious” as former Customs agent Monica Fuentes. Star and producer Vin Diesel previously revealed that “Fast 8” would take place in New York City.

  • Charlize Theron to Star in ‘Fast 8’: Report

WE Day CaliforniaCharlize Theron will follow her role in “Mad Max: Fury Road” with a part in an even more high-octane action franchise: The Oscar winner has reportedly signed on to star in “Fast 8.”

According to Deadline, Theron has just inked a deal to join the cast of the latest installment in the blockbuster “Fast & Furious” series. There are no details yet about just what her role entails, though the trade notes that she’ll be playing “a new character.”

The role will reunite Theron with her “The Italian Job” director F. Gary Gray, who’s helming “Fast 8.” She’ll join returning stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Jason Statham.

As Deadline notes, Theron’s casting continues a recent trend for the venerable “Fast” franchise, which has added more high-profile names to its ensemble — including now-regulars Johnson and Statham — in its last few outings in order to inject some new life into the series. And while “Fast 8” may not be able to top the sensational box office of predecessor “Furious 7,” Theron’s casting is a sign that filmmakers are going to do everything in their power to try.

“Fast 8,” which is set in New York City, is due in theaters on April 14, 2017.

  • It’s Everyone vs. Ravenna in This Exclusive ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ Clip

The “war” of “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is clear in this action-packed exclusive clip from the film, which comes out April 22. There’s only one line in the 45-second scene, from Emily Blunt‘s Freya, who is in full battle mode against her own sister, Queen Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron. You remember her, right? “Winter’s War” hits theaters four years after “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but it tells the story that came before that Kristen Stewart movie, bringing back Theron’s Ravenna and also the Huntsman himself, played by Chris Hemsworth.

The Huntsman is featured in this clip, along with Jessica Chastain, who plays Sara, a fellow warrior who seems like a cross between Katniss Everdeen of “The Hunger Games” and Tauriel from “The Hobbit.” As you can see in the video, which features a cool personal intro from Chastain and Hemsworth, Ravenna is a tough adversary to take down, even with multiple opponents.
    Here’s the synopsis from Universal:

“Theron stars as evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love.

As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between them is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Hemsworth). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Chastain) —the only woman who has ever captured his heart — Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister…or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.”

Considering this story came before “Snow White,” we know Ravenna doesn’t get vanquished, or at least stay vanquished. She’s like the Terminator, she just keeps coming back!

“The Huntsman: Winter’s War” arrives in theaters on April 22.

  • Academy Announces Diverse First Slate of Oscars Presenters, Performers

Pharrell Visits "The Elvis Duran Z100 Morning Show"It looks like the Academy is trying to make amends for the #OscarsSoWhite backlash, with its announcement of a diverse first slate of presenters and performers for next month’s Oscars ceremony.

The list was revealed in alphabetical order and without designating exactly who’s performing and who’s presenting, though it appears that the performers will most likely be nominees Lady Gaga (up for Best Original Song for “Til It Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground”), The Weeknd (“Fifty Shades of Grey” tune “Earned It”), and Sam Smith (“Spectre” theme “The Writing’s On the Wall”).

Presenters will include past Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro, Whoopi Goldberg, and Charlize Theron, as well as Tina Fey, Ryan Gosling (a 2007 nominee for “Half Nelson”), Kevin Hart, Jacob Tremblay, and Pharrell Williams (a nominee and performer in 2014 for “Despicable Me 2″‘s ubiquitous “Happy”). Many more names are expected where those came from.

The Academy has pledged to increase diversity among its ranks by doubling its number of women and minority members by 2020. It appears that inviting a more diverse slate of presenters to this year’s ceremony is also part of its inclusiveness plan.

The Oscars, hosted by Chris Rock (who’s likely to address the controversy head-on), will take place on Sunday, February 28 on ABC.

  • First ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Teaser Trailer Showcases Gorgeous Animation

Kubo and the Two STringsIf you loved the quirky, gentle, sensitive stop-motion-animated movies “Coraline” and “The Box Trolls,” you’re in for a treat.

Laika, the animation company behind those films, released the first teaser trailer for its next movie, “Kubo and the Two Strings.” It’s just a brief glimpse, with no explanation of the plot, but the animation is breathtaking and gorgeous. Just what we’d expect from a Laika production.
The movie features the voices of several Hollywood A-listers, including Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey. Here’s the official synopsis:

Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Hashi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kamekichi (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara) to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.

“Kubo and the Two Strings” opens in theaters August 19.

  • ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ Trailer Has Frozen Emily Blunt, Hot Jessica Chastain

The world of “Snow White and the Huntsman” is back — minus Kristen Stewart, but plus Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. (Upgrade?)

A title like “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” sounds so manly even Ron Swanson might approve, but the first trailer shows this is a movie all about girl power. Literally. Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron play sisters — sexy wicked sisters — and they are here to drop a magic mic on the kingdom.

Universal’s trailer starts with the question, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful of them all?” and shows us Emily Blunt’s Ice Queen Freya. (Might as well just call her Elsa.) She’s a newbie to the “Huntsman” world, along with Jessica Chastain as a warrior named Sara, and they join returnees Charlize Theron as Evil Queen Ravenna, and — almost an afterthought — Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman Eric.

    Here’s the trailer:

And here’s the detailed synopsis from Universal:

Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.”

It sounds like both a prequel and a sequel to the 2012 movie. It hits theaters in April 2016.

Everyone needs to start somewhere and for a lot of Hollywood stars, their first big break was in a low-budget horror film.

You already know that Kevin Bacon got skewered in the first “Friday the 13th,” and that Jennifer Aniston had to defend herself from a murderous sprite in “Leprechaun.” But you might not have seen some of these future Oscar winners and superheroes’ early films where they had to pretend to be terrified of parasites, critters, vampires and (the horror!) evil corn.
