  • ‘Murphy Brown’ Creator Explains Premiere’s Hillary Clinton Cameo

‘Murphy Brown’ Creator Explains Premiere’s Hillary Clinton Cameo

    CBS

“Murphy Brown” creator Diane English couldn’t have scripted it better herself. On the day of highly-charged hearings on Capitol Hill, the CBS revival’s premiere episode featured none other than one of the most highly-charged political figures of the time: Hillary Clinton.

“Well, we didn’t expect that to be our lead-in,” English told Vulture. “We moved our #MeToo episode from airing in fourth place to airing now in third place, because it’s so strongly in the zeitgeist right now. Even more than ever because of the hearings, we felt like we wanted to take advantage of that.”

English also explained how Clinton’s cameo came about — it was star Candice Bergen’s idea when the script called for Murphy to interview a new secretary.

“She said, ‘You know who would be a great secretary? Hillary Clinton.’ And I thought, Oh, that’s a genius idea,” English said.

“Then we started a campaign. I have good friends who work very closely with her. I ran one of her PACs during the 2016 campaign. So we reached out and we sent her the script. It had to go through many hands. She really liked it, and then it was a matter of making it work in the schedule, which was the difficult part.”

Clinton’s cameo was filmed separately from the rest of the episode, on a closed set with no live audience (to avoid spoilers).

And the former Secretary of State and presidential candidate didn’t even flinch at a reference to emails.

“She’s totally up for making fun of herself,” English noted. “So that was delightful that she didn’t ask for that to be removed.”

Perhaps now that Clinton seems to have left the political stage, Hollywood is next?

“She’s got great comic timing,” the creator raved. “We thought we were going to have to do a little more direction than we did, but she just nailed it.”

Sophie Turner is ready to show off Jean Grey’s intense journey.

UPDATE: Here is the first trailer, as promised:

    Here’s the plot synopsis:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Sophie Turner was indeed on “The Late Late Show” Wednesday night:

    Original post:

X-Men: Dark Phoenix” was delayed a few months for some reshoots, but it’s arriving in theaters this February 14, 2019. (Same day as the new “Happy Death Day” sequel.)

We’ve seen photos of the “X-Men” film, but now the first trailer is ready for fans.

Sophie Turner teased the trailer debut, which will happen during her appearance tonight (Wednesday to Thursday) on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” on CBS.

Her announcement came with a mini teaser, with a gorgeous backdrop:

The “Dark Phoenix” saga follows telepath Jean Grey’s battle with her own mind.

Back in December, Sophie Turner told EW she studied multiple personality disorder and schizophrenia in order to play Jean’s duality. “So many scenes I have to go from broken-down Jean — that’s when she’s most susceptible to Phoenix infiltrating her — to this confident, arrogant, judgmental character within milliseconds.”

The “Dark Phoenix” cast told EW this movie — set in 1992, almost 10 years after “X-Men: Apocalypse” — is the most emotional “X-Men” movie yet.

Watch the first trailer tonight, and see the full film on Valentine’s Day.

Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Sara Ramirez Says CBS Is ‘Open to Callie Coming Back’: ‘The Ball Is In ABC’s Court’

    ABC

“Grey’s Anatomy” fans have had to say goodbye to a lot of good doctors over the years, but sometimes, we get to see them again.

We’re still holding out hope that Sara Ramirez will return as her character, Dr. Callie Torres, and we’re definitely not the only ones. The actress herself tweeted on Wednesday, Sept. 26 about the possibility of returning, and she seemed to indicate that CBS would let her fit in a guest appearance around her “Madam Secretary” schedule.

“For the record has been nothing but gracious and generous to me,” she wrote. “They are open to Callie coming back! The ball is in ‘s court.”

    https://twitter.com/SaraRamirez/status/1045047838504349700

It’s unclear what exactly prompted Ramirez’s tweet, but fans were previously disappointed when she didn’t reprise her role in the Season 14 finale for the departure of Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). When creator Shonda Rhimes was asked about Callie returning during an Instagram Stories “Ask Me Anything” Q&A in August, she said that “CBS has a hold of [Ramirez]” and they couldn’t get her “because she’s on another show.” Now, the actress’s tweet says that the network is “open to Callie coming back,” but it doesn’t specify what, if anything, changed.

Whatever led to Ramirez’s tweet, we’re optimistic now that the ball is apparently in ABC’s court. We’ve reached out to the network for comment and will update if we hear back.

To quote Rhimes in her Q&A, “Come home, Callie.”

  • Julie Chen Tearfully Quits ‘The Talk’ After 8 Seasons, in Support of Les Moonves

Julie Chen Tearfully Quits ‘The Talk’ After 8 Seasons, in Support of Les Moonves

    The Talk, Julie Chen
    CBS

At the end of last Thursday’s live episode of “Big Brother,” Julie Chen made her position clear: She signed off as “Julie Chen-Moonves,” something she had never done before.

She continued to back her husband Les Moonves — who was recently ousted by CBS after multiple sexual misconduct allegations — by quitting “The Talk.”

She’s expected to stay on as host of “Big Brother,” and it was in the “Big Brother” studio that she recorded this message announcing her decision to leave “The Talk:

“I have been at ‘The Talk’ since the day it started nine years ago, and the cast crew and staff have become family to me over the years. But right now, I need to spend more time at home with my husband and our young son, so I’ve decided to leave ‘The Talk.’ I want to thank everyone at the show for the wonderful years together. I will always, always cherish the memories we shared. Most important, I want to thank you, the viewers, for allowing me into your home every day. It was a privilege that I will forever be grateful for.”

Chen went on to praise individual members of “The Talk.” After the pre-recorded clip aired, “The Talk” co-host Sara Gilbert returned the praise to Julie Chen.

“We thank you for eight years of dear friendship and all you did to help the success of the show.”

    CBS also shared a statement:

“For eight seasons, Julie Chen has co-hosted ‘The Talk’ with incredible energy, grace and professionalism. Her talents played a big role in our successful launch of CBS’ first network daytime talk show, and in the series growth into an Emmy Award-winning broadcast. All of us here have tremendous appreciation for the dedication and passion she brought to the show every day and for her generous role as an ambassador for CBS Daytime. We are grateful for her many other contributions, respect her decision and wish Julie all the best in everything she does.”

Julie Chen(-Moonves) is still expected to continue hosting “Big Brother” Season 20, which is just finishing up in the next two weeks. It’s not clear if CBS will keep her on for future seasons — and CBS has yet to officially renew the reality show for a future season.

    CBS

Les Moonves should only ever be referred to as Julie Chen‘s husband.

His status as the Chenbot’s other half is what “Big Brother” fans really care about as  winds down.

Moonves just parachuted from CBS after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Julie Chen had already shared a statement supporting him:

After Moonves exited as the big boss, Chen shared a new statement with TheWrap on her TV plans:

“I am taking a few days off from ‘The Talk’ to be with my family. I will be back soon and will see you Thursday night on ‘Big Brother.’”

“Big Brother” airs three times a week, but Thursday is the live show. This week is also supposed to be a double eviction night for Season 20.

CBS has yet to renew “Big Brother” for Season 21, and fans are worried about the show’s status. There’s also talk that Julie Chen might not continue hosting for the rest of the season (although if she’s coming back this Thursday, she might as well continue for the next couple of weeks).

Fans are using the hashtag along with as this season continues.

There have been issues with “Big Brother 20” beyond the Les Moonves exit. JC Mounduix has repeatedly been admonished for bad behavior, but doesn’t seem keen to learn. Also, Scottie Salton’s parting words on last week’s live show — with a “Hilton Head” pun directed at Tyler and Angela — were censored and reportedly upset The Powers That Be.

BB20 continues Wednesdays at Sundays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CBS.

  • Les Moonves Exits CBS Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Les Moonves Exits CBS Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

    Les Moonves
    CBS

Les Moonves, the longtime head of CBS, is exiting the network following a second report containing sexual misconduct allegations against the executive.

His departure comes on the heels of a second New Yorker report this weekend by Ronan Farrow in which six more women came forward to accuse Moonves of sexual misconduct or assault, including exposing himself and forcing them to perform oral sex on him.

CBS made the announcement Sunday and said Moonves’ exit was effective immediately. Chief operating officer Joseph Ianniello will serve as president and and acting CEO until a permanent replacement is found.

In addition, CBS and Moonves will donate $20 million to one or more organizations supporting the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace. This donation will be deducted from any severance owed to Moonves, though CBS said he will not receive that severance until the board has completed its independent investigation of the allegations.

In a statement, Moonves said, “For the past 24 years it has been an incredible privilege to lead CBS’ renaissance and transformation into a leading global media company. The best part of this journey has been working alongside the dedicated and talented people in this company. Together, we built CBS into a destination where the best in the business come to work and succeed.

“Untrue allegations from decades ago are now being made against me that are not consistent with who I am.”

John Krasinski Proves He’s ‘a Real Action Guy’ Now in Hilarious Colbert Fight

Stephen Colbert, John Krasinski, The Late Show
    CBS

John Krasinski is Jack Ryan now — and he’s not here for your Harrison Ford comparisons.

Krasinski was on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last night, trying to promote his new Amazon series. He worked hard to prove to Colbert that he’s an “action guy” now — and not just a nice guy who does comedy, like Jim from “The Office.”

And yet — even in the end, after defeating his nemesis in true action hero fashion — Krasinski looked in the camera to gloat. As Colbert noted, while falling action villain style from the roof of a building: “That’s soooo Jiiiiiiimmmm!”

“The Office” alum was “forced” to do 10 push-ups to prove his action chops. (The audience appreciated that.) And he had a classic stunt fight bit with Colbert. (Shout-out to the photo on the wall of Krasinski’s wife and “A Quiet Place” co-star Emily Blunt.)

No action film is complete without an elevator fight, and this one had a cameo from Krasinski’s “The Office” co-star Ellie Kemper.

Watch the whole thing; the action bit starts around the 3:05 mark:

Stephen Colbert does have a nice villain beard now. It works.

“Jack Ryan” is now streaming on Amazon.

  • ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’ Production on Hold as Hurricane Lane Nears Hawaii

‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’ Production on Hold as Hurricane Lane Nears Hawaii

    Jack Lord in Hawaii Five-0
    CBS

The show biz saying “the show must go on” doesn’t apply during a hurricane.

CBS announced Thursday that both “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.” have halted production as the islands prepare for wild weather, Deadline reports. Intense rains have started hitting the islands as Hurricane Lane gets closer. The tropical storm is a Category 4 hurricane and the National Weather Service has warned that it could bring up to 30 inches of rain and dangerous winds to parts of Hawaii.

Needless to say, these storm conditions aren’t conducive to filming a TV show. Both CBS series are keeping their cast and crew’s safety in mind by shutting down production. The network said it was “closely monitoring the situation” on Wednesday, and then made the call Thursday.

It remains to be seen exactly how much of an impact Hurricane Lane will have on the Hawaiian Islands, so people are preparing for the worst, just in case.

“Magnum P.I.” premieres Monday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, while “Hawaii Five-0” Season 9 debuts Friday, Sept. 28 in the same time slot.

  • ‘The Big Bang Theory’ to End With Season 12

‘The Big Bang Theory’ to End With Season 12

    Big Bang Theory
    CBS

“The Big Bang Theory” will end after the upcoming 12th season on CBS.

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ during the past twelve seasons,” WBTV and Chuck Lorre Productions said in a joint statement.

“We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring ‘The Big Bang Theory’ to an epic creative close.”

When “TBBT” ends in May, it will go out as the longest-running multi-camera comedy in television history with a record-breaking 279 episodes.

It has been a ratings behemoth for CBS, ranking as the No. 1 TV comedy until last season (when ABC’s “Roseanne” revival bumped it). “TBBT” also helped launch prequel spinoff “Young Sheldon,” which became an instant hit.

A few weeks ago, CBS Entertainment boss Kelly Kahl told reporters there were preliminary discussions about a 13th season. However, that would mean negotiating new deals for the cast.

Last fall, the actors signed lucrative new contracts worth $900,000 each, plus backend points and overall deals. The original five stars —Jim Parsons (Sheldon), Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Simon Helberg (Howard) and Kunal Nayyar (Raj) — all took pay cuts so that castmates Mayim Bialik (Amy) and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) could achieve salary parity.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the decision to continue on after Season 12 likely rested with Emmy-winning star Parsons. If he wanted to return, the rest of the cast would, too.

Season 12 just taped its premiere episode, which means the writers have plenty of time to figure out an endgame for the series.

  • Now a ‘Designing Women’ Revival Is in the Works

Now a ‘Designing Women’ Revival Is in the Works

    Designing Women
    CBS

These revivals will continue until morale improves.

Listen, “Designing Women” was a great show — and this may be a fantastic revival, since it does have its series creator behind it — but it’s coming after so many other reboots and revivals that we’re in deep fatigue.

Linda Bloodworth-Thomason created the Atlanta design sitcom, which ran for seven seasons on CBS from 1986 to 1993.

According to TVLine, Bloodworth-Thomason is shepherding the comedy revival; THR added that it has been in the works for months as Sony Pictures Television Studios searches for a home for the series.

It’s not clear which OG stars might return, or even if it would be a true revival or some kind of reboot of the concept. Sadly, both Dixie Carter (Julia Sugarbaker) and Meshach Taylor (Anthony Bouvier) have passed away, so they’re clearly out.

But Annie Potts (Mary Jo Shively) did tell Entertainment Weekly she would be interested in a revival of the series. Maybe Delta Burke (Suzanne Sugarbaker) and Jean Smart (Charlene Frazier-Stillfield) would return, too. Yes, there were some behind-the-scenes issues — specifically with Delta Burke — but maybe enough time has gone by that people feel differently. No? Yes?

Potts — who now stars on CBS’ “Young Sheldon” — told EW in March that she’d love a “Designing Women” revival, although she wasn’t sure when she’d have time for it:

“Every Monday night was a MeToo moment for us, and we were talking about it; we were very political. I’m sad that there’s not such a strong voice, I don’t think, in any singular show. Nobody is doing what we did then. So yeah, if [creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason] wanted to write six episodes and do it in my hiatus, I would be there in a minute.”

Stay tuned for details as this develops. It’s funny. “Designing Women.” “Murphy Brown.” “Will & Grace.” “Roseanne.”
