Heading out to the big red box near you? New DVD/Blu-ray discs tend to come out on Tuesdays, and that’s also when Redbox releases its newest titles.
Redbox recently shared a list of the new titles coming out on disc — as well as on demand through VOD (video-on-demand) and EST (electronic sell-through) — in February 2018.

This Thursday marks the start of a new month, and you know what that means: A bunch of new titles will be added to Netflix as of February 1, and several more will be leaving.
Here are just a few of the many new options this week:
“Altered Carbon” (Netflix Original)
The biggest release of the week is this Netflix Original sci-fi TV series starring Joel Kinnaman and James Purefoy. Season 1’s 10 episodes premiere this Friday, Feb. 2.
“In the distant future, human consciousness can be digitized and downloaded into different bodies. Brought back to life after 250 years by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), the richest man on Earth, ex-Envoy soldier Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman /Will Yun Lee) must solve Bancroft’s attempted murder for the chance to live again in a world he doesn’t recognize.”

You don’t have to wait until February starts for some good streaming options this week. “Absentia” Season 1 (Amazon)Long time no see, Stana Katic! Our “Castle” heroine returns in this Amazon Prime Original Series, which premieres February 2 on Prime. “Blueprint”
“Blueprint” — on EST and VOD Tuesday, Feb. 6 (see new later date) — follows a young black man searching for his identity in the aftermath of a fatal shooting in South Side, Chicago. Inspired by a true story, this timely drama tackles racial injustice and what it takes to overcome grief under difficult circumstances.

Starting Monday, Jan. 29 (today), Acorn TV is premiering this six-part addictive British drama series, starring Miranda Richardson, Phyllis Logan, Zoe Wanamaker, Anthony Head, and Matthew Lewis (aka Neville of Harry Potter fame). “Three women of a certain age are juggling the challenges of modern life when a tragedy exposes secrets that put their friendship to the test.”
“The Music of Silence: The Unforgettable True Story of Andrea Bocelli”
This drama — opening in select theaters and on VOD and Digital HD on February 2 — is based on the true story of Andrea Bocelli, a blind boy who against all odds becomes one of the most world renowned opera singers in the world. Toby Sebastian, Luisa Ranieri, Jordi Mollà, Ennio Fantastichini, and Antonio Banderas star in the film.
“Wonder”
Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson, and Julia Roberts star in this heartwarming family film — based on the book by R.J. Palacio — out on digital January 30, then Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD on February 13. The movie follows young Auggie, who had multiple surgeries on his face, and must handle the challenge of how his peers and community react to his condition. Extras include the five-part documentary “Summer of Fun,” a music video “Brand New Eyes,” audio commentary, and several featurettes.
“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
Denzel Washington just picked up another Oscar nomination for his lead role in this legal drama, which arrives on Digital HD January 30, then on Blu-ray and DVD on February 13. Washington plays the title character, a driven, idealistic defense attorney who finds himself in a tumultuous series of events that lead to a crisis and the necessity for extreme action. Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo, Amanda Warren, and Sam Gilroy co-star. The movie comes with three behind-the-scenes featurettes and eight deleted scenes.

“God’s Own Country”

“This Is Us” (Sunday on NBC at 10:30 p.m.)This Sunday, Feb. 4 is Super Bowl LII. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t care about the Super Bowl, you may still care about what’s airing around it. “This Is Us” got the cushy post-Super Bowl spot, starting at 10:30 p.m. or whenever the dang thing ends. It’s going to be *THE* episode — the one showing how Jack Pearson dies, and why Kate blames herself. Since it’s airing on Super Bowl Sunday, the modern storyline will also focus on the big game, and how The Big Three honor their father on the anniversary of the day he died.
Kitten Bowl V (Sunday on Hallmark Hannel at noon)
Puppy Bowl XIV (Sunday on Animal Planet at 3 p.m. ET)
No Super Bowl Sunday is complete without cute kittens and puppies! First up is Kitten Bowl on Hallmark: “Displaced kittens rescued from the country’s most recent natural disasters vie for the National Championship of Feline Football trophy and a loving, forever home in which to display it.” After that, Animal Planet has a ton of pre-show stuff for Puppy Bowl even before the game begins: “The cutest, fuzziest, fluffiest event of the year has finally arrived as Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl returns for its fourteenth season; more puppies, more rescues, and a brand-new bone-shaped stadium.”
“The Trade” (Friday on Showtime at 9 p.m.)
Showtime is premiering this five-episode docuseries on Friday, Feb. 2. “From Columbus, Ohio to Guerrero, Mexico and countless cities in between, the opioid epidemic has ravaged communities on both sides of the border. But what about the lives behind the headlines and statistics? “Blade Runner 2049”
Merry Christmas-to-New Year’s week! This sequel to “Blade Runner,” set 30 years after Harrison Ford’s sci-fi classic, isn’t quite what you’d call holiday viewing.
That said, the highly-acclaimed visual gem is available for post-Christmas viewing on digital starting Tuesday, Dec. 26, then on Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD on January 16. Ford is back, alongside Ryan Gosling this time, with director Denis Villeneuve at the helm. There are many, many, many making-of bonus features with the Blu-ray and 4K, but also the DVD release.
“Pete the Cat: A Groovy New Year Holiday Special” (Amazon)
Here’s something timely. This Amazon Original Series Holiday Special follows Pete the Cat and his search for a New Year’s Resolution. “With the help of his family and friends, Pete sets out on a fun, musical ride to find one.” The family-friendly special premieres Tuesday, Dec. 26 on Amazon Prime Video. “The Foreigner”
Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan teamed up for this action thriller directed by Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) and costarring Katie Leung, Orla Brady, Charlie Murphy, and Michael McElhatton. Watch the cat-and-mouse story play out on Digital starting Dec. 26, then on Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand January 9. Bonus features include interviews, trailers, and “The Making of The Foreigner.”
“Black Mirror” Season 4
Finally! “Black Mirror” fans, Christmas is coming a few days late for us, but it should be worth it. Season 4 of Charlie Brooker’s mind-trip of a series (like a modern technology focused “The Twilight Zone”) returns this Friday, Dec. 29. “It’s hard to imagine a bright future, but we must.” There are six standalone episodes, with star-studded casts. Watch the trailer below, or just start watching it all from a relatively blank slate on Friday. (Also, please watch the first three seasons. Not that you need to catch up on anything, since this is not a serialized show. They’re just fantastic episodes.) “Travelers” Season 2
This sci-fi series stars Eric McCormack as one of several “travelers” sent back from the future to prevent the collapse of society. Season 2 already aired in Canada and the rest of us will get the episodes on December 26.

“A Christmas Story” (Monday on TBS/TNT) If you want something on in the background on Christmas Day, several channels are doing holiday movie/show marathons, including Freeform, Hallmark, CMT, Comedy Central, ION, Sundance, and Nickelodeon. TBS and TNT get special props for their decision to do an all-day “A Christmas Story” marathon. Just that 1983 movie on one glorious pink nightmare loop.
New Year’s Eve countdowns (Sunday on Fox, ABC, CNN starting at 8 p.m.)
Here’s hoping your 2018 is way better than 2017, even if you had a great year. If you feel like watching TV countdowns, you have options:
• ABC’s “Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2018” starts at 8 p.m. Ryan Seacrest will host with Jenny McCarthy in Times Square, with Ciara on the West Coast and Lucy Hale in New Orleans. Performers include Mariah Carey (redemption time?), Camila Cabello, Nick Jonas, Sugarland, Britney Spears, and more.
• FOX has its own version, “Fox’s New Year’s Eve With Steve Harvey: Live From Times Square,” also starting at 8 p.m. Steve Harvey is replacing previous New Year’s host Pitbull. Maria Menounos is co-hosting the event, while Celine Dion, the Backstreet Boys, and Macklemore as performers.
• CNN has “New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen,” with Cohen replacing Kathy Griffin.
• Fox News has an “All-American New Year” planned, hosted by Lisa Montgomery and Jesse Watters, starting at 10 p.m., with performances from Andy Grammer and Lauren Alaina.
“Breaking Bad” marathon (Sunday on AMC at 2 p.m.)
Can you believe it has been 10 years since Walter White first cooked meth in his undies in that RV? Time flies, b*tch. To mark the 10th anniversary, AMC is airing all 62 episodes in a several-week marathon, starting on Sunday, Dec. 31. The episodes will then air each weekend through January. “Dunkirk”
Will Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic win Best Picture at the 2018 Oscars? We’ll have to wait until March to find out. But you can watch the film at home starting this Tuesday, Dec. 12 on Digital HD, and then next Tuesday, Dec. 19 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. The many bonus features are divided into various categories, including “Creation,” “Land,” “Air,” “Sea,” and “Conclusion.”
“The LEGO NINJAGO Movie”
Watch the battle for NINJAGO City on Digital December 12, then Blu-ray and DVD on December 19. The animated comedy — featuring the voices of Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Zach Woods, and Jackie Chan — will also be available on Movies Anywhere. The DVD and Blu-ray both include deleted scenes and a LEGO NINJAGO TV Series Sneak Peek. The Blu-ray also comes with several more featurettes, music videos, outtakes, and a few mini-movies.
“Flatliners”
This modern take on the ’90s classic has a great cast, led by Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons. The afterlife experience arrives first on digital December 12 and then on Blu-ray and DVD December 26. Digital and Blu-ray bonus materials include four behind-the-scenes featurettes, plus deleted and extended scenes. The DVD has two featurettes.
“Jean-Claude Van Johnson” Season 1 (Amazon Original)
This new Amazon Original Series stars Jean-Claude Van Damme playing “Jean-Claude Van Damme,” a global martial arts and film sensation, also operating under the alias of “Johnson” as the world’s best undercover private contractor. The first season begins this Friday, Dec. 15, only on Amazon.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” Taron Egerton’s Eggsy returns for this Kingsman sequel, costarring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, and even Elton John. The action comedy is already on Movies Anywhere, and it arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD December 12. There are several behind-the-scenes featurettes on the making of the film, including “Black Cab Chaos: Anatomy of a Killer Chase,” which is available on the Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD.
“Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season”
Winter is coming! And, just in time, the penultimate season is arriving December 12 on Blu-ray and DVD. The discs come packed with exclusive new bonus content, including audio commentaries on every episode, two new behind-the-scenes featurettes, and (for a limited time) a bonus disc containing “Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms,” a 45-minute extension of the award-winning “History & Lore” features included on previous individual Blu-ray season releases.
“Detroit”
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s crime drama — starring John Boyega, Will Poulter, John Krasinski, and Anthony Mackie — arrives on Blu-ray and DVD December 12. The discs include several special featurettes on the history surrounding the events portrayed in the film, including five behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a music video featuring Algee Smith and the real Larry Reed from The Dramatics.

“Christmas Inheritance” (Netflix Original)
In the mood for a Christmas romance? Netflix is streaming this original film starring Eliza Taylor, Jake Lacy, and Andie MacDowell starting December 15. “Before ambitious heiress Ellen Langford can inherit her father’s gift business, she must deliver a special Christmas card to her dad’s former partner in Snow Falls, the hometown she never knew. When a snowstorm strands her at the town inn, she’s forced to work for her keep, and in the process, finds romance and discovers the true gift of Christmas.”
“The Exorcist” Season 2 Finale (Friday on FOX at 9 p.m.) Why aren’t more people watching this amazing horror show? It’s not too late to catch up. Binge the first nine episodes of Season 2 (and all of Season 1, if you’re not up-to-date, although you can watch Season 2 alone) and prepare for the big finale this Friday. Here’s the synopsis from FOX: “Everything has led to this moment. As one priest fights for his life in the hospital, another is forced to confront the ghosts of his past. With time running out to save Andy’s (John Cho) life, one of the exorcists must make the ultimate sacrifice in the all-new ‘Unworthy’ Season 2 finale.”
“Mr. Robot” Season 3 Finale (Wednesday on USA at 10 p.m.)
Rami Malek’s mind-trip drama hasn’t gotten as much attention this year as the first two seasons, and it’s already ending its 10-episode third season this week. In “shutdown -r,” USA teases, “elliot tries to save darlene but sh*t doesn’t go as planned. mr. robot needs to step up or step back ffs. angela considers the price.”
“The Librarians” Season 4 Premiere (Wednesday on TNT at 8 p.m.)
This is a big week for midseason/fall finales, but at least one show is actually starting back up. Season 4 of this adventure drama starring Rebecca Romijn and Noah Wyle begins December 13. “And the Dark Secret” has this synopsis from TNT: “When a secret sect of the Vatican Church unearths an ancient map detailing the locations of the four cornerstones of the Library of Alexandria (the original Library), it’s up to Flynn and the Librarians – with the help of an unexpected ally – to stop them before the stones can be used to destroy the Library.”

“Despicable Me 3”
‘Tis the season to start thinking of good holiday gifts, so here’s one for the Minion-lover in your life. “Despicable Me 3” is out on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday, December 5. This time, Paul Hollywood is here to judge alongside Johnny Iuzzini. Somehow, we’re supposed to go on without the sweetness and spice of Mary Berry. Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez are also out as hosts, with Ayesha Curry and Anthony “Spice” Adams stepping in.
“Will & Grace” and “Superstore” Holiday Episodes (Tuesday on NBC at 9 p.m.)
Two of NBC’s Thursday comedies are moving to Tuesday for one special week of Christmas episodes. TV Worth Watching
• “Superior Donuts” Season 2 (Monday on CBS at 9 p.m.) Mmmmm. Donuts. CBS is tweaking its schedule a bit this week, bringing Season 2 of “Superior Donuts” back at 9 p.m. instead of 9:30, so it airs before “Me, Myself & I.” The October 30 premiere is called “What the Truck?” and here’s the scoop: “Arthur’s business is threatened by an ambitious young entrepreneur who parks her food truck in front of the donut shop; Franco grows frustrated trying to following his dream of going to college.”
• Halloween Stuff (Tuesday on various channels)
Tuesday night is Halloween, and if “Halloween” is your thing, AMC has you covered. Over on FXX, they’re doing a marathon of “The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror” episodes, which is pretty awesome. Some Network TV shows honored Halloween last week, but a few are doing night-of episodes, including “This Is Us” with Episode 6, “The 20’s”: “Trick-or-treating with the 10-year-olds goes awry for Jack and Rebecca; Randall, Kevin and Kate have life-changing Halloweens.” Also, if you want to get ahead of the game, “Dancing With the Stars” has a Halloween-themed night on Monday, Oct. 30 from 8 to 10 pm.
• “Major Crimes” Season 6 (Tuesday on TNT at 9 p.m.) TNT is ending “Major Crimes” after Season 6, which starts on Halloween night and continues for 13 episodes, with the series finale airing January 16, 2018. The final season begins with “Sanctuary City: Part 1”: “When three 15-year-old boys vanish from a Catholic school field trip, Asst. Chief Mason orders Major Crimes to treat their disappearance as a critical missing; Sharon receives more evidence that Phillip Stroh may be returning to Los Angeles.”
• “SMILF” Season 1 (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.)
Frankie Shaw stars as scrappy single mom Bridgette Bird — trying to navigate life in South Boston with a very unconventional family — in this new semi-autobiographical half-hour comedy. The first episode, “A Box of Dunkies & Two Squirts of Maple Syrup,” airs right after the Season 8 premiere of “Shameless.”
• “Get Out” (Saturday on HBO at 8 p.m.)
Much like Netflix, HBO also adds a bunch of titles at the start of the month, and you should check out what they’re adding to HBO NOW and On Demand. Every Saturday night they “premiere” a new movie, and this week it’s Jordan Peele’s breakout horror comedy “Get Out.” Perfect for a post-Halloween treat. Watch it with any leftover candy you might have.

• “Spider-Man: Homecoming”
You have a “Homecoming” date with Peter Parker on Tuesday. Tom Holland’s first Spider-Man solo movie arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on October 17, complete with all of the bells and whistles fans expect from Marvel home releases. Blu-ray and digital bonus materials include “The Spidey Study Guide,” 10 deleted scenes, a gag reel, seven featurettes, “Rappin’ with Cap: Captain America PSAs,” and a photo gallery.

• “Girls Trip”
Four lifelong friends — the Flossy Posse — get together for a weekend of fun in 2017’s biggest R-rated comedy, out on Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand on October 17. Bonus features include deleted scenes, a gag reel, an extended performance of “Because of You” by Ne-Yo, and three behind-the-scenes featurettes.

• “The Dark Tower” Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey star in this battle of good and evil based on Stephen King’s epic novels. “The Dark Tower” debuts on digital October 17, and on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on October 31. Digital and Blu-ray bonus materials include deleted scenes, a blooper reel, “A Look Through the Keyhole,” and five behind-the-scenes featurettes. (The DVD comes with the blooper reel and two featurettes.)

Callum Turner plays a fresh college graduate embroiled in a complicated affair in this drama co-starring Kate Beckinsale, Pierce Brosnan, Cynthia Nixon, Jeff Bridges, Kiersey Clemons, Debi Mazar, Bill Camp, and Tate Donovan. The film arrives on Digital HD on October 20, including three featurettes looking at the making of the film, the eco-friendly measures that the production used, and how the character of New York City contributed to the story.

• “Jungle”
Daniel Radcliffe, Thomas Kretschmann, Alex Russell, and Joel Jackson star in this thriller in select theaters and On Demand/Digital this Friday, Oct. 20. “An enthusiastic young adventurer follows his dreams into the Amazon jungle with two friends and a guide with a mysterious past. Their journey quickly turns into a terrifying ordeal as the darkest elements of human nature and the deadliest threats of the wilderness lead to an all-out fight for survival.”

• “The Walking Dead” Season 8 (Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.) We’re goin’ to war! “The Walking Dead” returns October 22, and the Season 8 premiere is also the 100th episode of the entire series. Negan and Rick are now engaged in All Out War, which means more action is ahead, and the characters should be sticking together instead of being split into mini groups like last year. Fingers crossed that they’ve learned some lessons from Season 7 — and by “they” we don’t just mean Team Rick.
• “The Exorcist” Season 2 (Friday on FOX at 9 p.m.)
Are you watching this wonderful horror show? Season 2 has been strong so far, with John Cho shining as beleaguered foster father Andy, who’s dealing with a possible possession in his family in addition to a visit from home care. Catch up on the show On Demand and join the fun when Episode 4, “One for Sorrow,” airs this Friday.
• “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (Thursday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
No Halloween season is complete without this classic. “Grey’s Anatomy” is taking this week off, so Linus can await the most sincere pumpkin in the patch, from 8 to 8:30, followed by Woody, Buzz and friends in Toy Story OF TERROR!” from 8:30 to 9.
• “John Wick: Chapter 2” (Saturday on HBO at 8 p.m.)
If you’re staying in this Saturday, and want something cool to watch before “Saturday Night Live,” Keanu Reeves’ not-so-retired super-assassin will be on HBO, thinkin’ he’s back. “John Wick: Chapter Three” is officially in the works, with the third film in the “John Wick” franchise scheduled for release on May 17, 2019.
• “1922” (Netflix Original Film)
Netflix is following “Gerald’s Game” with another original film based on a Stephen King novella. Thomas Jane and Molly Parker star in this story of a farmer who brutally murders his wife and convinces his teenage son to help, only for things to unravel in typical Uncle Stevie fashion. “Nobody leaves the Hasidic community, unless they’re willing to pay the price.” This documentary, streaming on Netflix October 20, examines the world of Hasidic Judaism and those who wish to leave that community for a life among the non-religious.• “Patton Oswalt: Annihilation” (Netflix Original)
Patton Oswalt’s new stand-up special gets particularly personal, with the actor/comedian opening up on the death of his wife, and how he worked through the grief by finding humor. Oswalt also tackles social media, politics, and more, with the on-hour special premiering Tuesday, October 17.

• Redbox: That big red box out front is getting some new titles this week. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will be available this Friday, Oct. 6. • “Maudie” The great Sally Hawkins plays the title role of Maud Lewis in this romantic biopic of the popular Canadian folk artist, co-starring Ethan Hawke. A “bright-eyed, intelligent woman, hunched with crippled hands from arthritis, Maud yearns to be independent from her overly protective family. She answers an advertisement for a housekeeper by a 40-year-old bachelor who owes nothing to anyone. She is a terrible housekeeper and spends most of her time painting. Over time, she wins his heart. Amber Tamblyn made her feature directorial debut with this film based on the novel by Janet Fitch, following two women from different words drawn together when they lose the man they both loved. Janet McTeer, Alia Shawkat, Rhys Wakefield, Nancy Kwan, Emily Rios, and Alfred Molina star in the drama, which is available on VOD October 3.

• “The Gifted” Season 1 (Monday on Fox at 9 p.m.) This highly anticipated Marvel/Fox production, connected to the “X-Men” film series, premieres right after the start of “Lucifer” Season 2. Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Coby Bell, Emma Dumont, Blair Redford, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Percy Hynes White star in this story of a suburban couple whose lives are changed when they discover their children possess mutant powers. Episode 1, “eXposed” airs October 2: “A hostile government forces a family to go on the run and fights to survive.”
• “Scandal” Season 7 (Thursday on ABC at 9 p.m.)
The final season of “Scandal” begins this week. Season 7, Episode 1, “Watch Me,” is set 100 days into Mellie’s presidency. Olivia faces her toughest call yet as she works to avoid an international incident, and Quinn Perkins & Associates struggle to find their first client.
• “The Mayor” Season 1 (Tuesday on ABC at 9:30 p.m.)
ABC’s new comedy, starring Brandon Micheal Hall and Lea Michele, follows idealistic rapper Courtney Rose, who runs for mayor as a publicity stunt and is stunned to actually gets elected.
• “Once Upon a Time” Season 7 (Friday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
Season 7 is the reboot season of “Once,” and it airs on a new night. Episode 1, “Hyperion Heights,” starts Friday, Oct. 6, following an adult Henry Mills (Andrew J. West) and his daughter Lucy. “Henry encounters a troubled Cinderella in a distant realm and is forced to make difficult choices; Henry’s daughter Lucy finds him disillusioned at his home in Seattle and must make him remember his true self to defeat the curse.”
• “Skylanders Academy” Season 2 (Netflix Original)
The Skylanders are back to save the realm in Season 2, which arrives on Netflix October 6. The animated family series follows the adventures of Spyro (Justin Long), Eruptor (Jonathan Banks), Stealth Elf (Ashley Tisdale), Jet-Vac (Jonny Rees), Pop Fizz (Bobcat Goldthwait), and their team of young warriors as they travel the vast Skylands universe protecting it from evil-doers. Season 2 finds our heroes seeking answers from the past; Spyro begins a search for information about his ancestors in order to harness and understand his special powers. Meanwhile, Kaos’ quest to bring evil rule to the Skylands realms accidentally unleashes a villain more powerful than anything Kaos or the Skylander warriors have ever faced.
