  • Amber Heard Accuses Studio of Twisting Her Words to Support Johnny Depp

'Black Mass' Boston Special ScreeningWarner Bros. is in a tight spot with both Amber Heard and Johnny Depp as franchise stars.

Amber Heard plays Mera in the WB’s DCEU franchise, starting in “Justice League” and continuing in the next film, “Aquaman.” Johnny Depp plays Gellert Grindelwald in the WB’s Harry Potter franchise, starting in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” and continuing in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.”

Heard and Depp had a short marriage with a bad breakup. There were abuse allegations, and those allegations have followed Depp into his casting as Grindelwald. Harry Potter author and “Fantastic Beasts” screenwriter J.K. Rowling shared a statement supporting Depp’s casting. Director David Yates and producer David Heyman also released a joint statement supporting Depp.

But it’s Warner Bros.’s statement that seemed to upset Heard, because it cherry picked part of her joint statement with Depp after their divorce.

First, here’s Warner Bros.’ statement (via THR):

“We are of course aware of reports that surfaced around the end of Johnny Depp’s marriage and take seriously the complexity of the issues involved. This matter has been jointly addressed by both parties, in a statement in which they said ‘There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.’ Based on the circumstances and the information available to us, we, along with the filmmakers, continue to support the decision to proceed with Johnny Depp in the role of Grindelwald in this and future films.”

Amber Heard tweeted a reaction taking aim at their choice of statement quote:

Warner Bros.’ is releasing “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” costarring Depp, on November 16th, 2018. The studio is scheduled to follow with the release of DC’s “Aquaman,” costarring Heard, on December 21st, 2018.

  • First Look at ‘Aquaman’ Shows Jason Momoa About to Kick Ass

    Don’t mess with “Aquaman.”

Star Jason Momoa is glowering at something (or somebody) as he strides through an industrial setting in this first look image from Entertainment Weekly. And as director James Wan explains, “Justice League” only provided a taste of who Aquaman really is.

His solo movie is “going to look very different, it will feel very different — aesthetically, tonally, story-wise — it’s my own take. It’s a much more a traditional action-adventure quest movie,” Wan said.

And no dialogue bubbles this time!

“‘Justice League’ was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life,” Momoa said. “This is a totally different beast. In ‘Aquaman,’ you see when his parents met and what happened to them. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has.”

“Aquaman” opens in theaters December 21, 2018.

  • James Wan: ‘Aquaman’ Won’t Have ‘Air Bubbles for Dialogue’ Like ‘Justice League’

“Aquaman” director James Wan is responding to early concerns about his film.

“Justice League” just opened last week, but it’s already a disappointment in terms of box office revenue and critics’ reviews. That can’t be fun for the cast of “Aquaman,” since they are up next for the DCEU. Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and the Atlantis team made their debut in “Justice League,” but James Wan is making it clear, in his own way, that his world will be its own thing.

The Hollywood Reporter just posted a piece critiquing the Aquaman section of “Justice League,” with this beginning and ending:

“The Atlantis sequence in Justice League proved two things. Firstly, that the Aquaman movie is either going to feature a lot of scenes taking place out of water or be a mostly dialogue-less feature, and secondly, the Atlantean mythology of it all is going to require some heavy lifting on the part of the filmmakers.

    […]

Now, all James Wan and the rest of the Aqua-team needs to work out is how to have all the characters speak while underwater. There can’t be that many air bubbles under the sea, after all.”

There’s a lot to read between the start and finish, but Wan referenced the end paragraph in this tweet:

So we know he’s following the concerns out there, and he does not sound worried about them. He probably singled the “air bubbles” to keep the larger mythology spoilers at bay, and also tease his different approach to underwater communication. You can imagine that will be a big deal in “Aquaman.”

In case you’re curious, the replies to Wan’s tweet are focused mostly on advising him to lock his editing bay so the Warner Bros. execs can’t get in there and mess with his vision. That’s an assumption about what went wrong with “Justice League,” leading to a petition for the director’s cut.

James Wan has our trust. But … the fewer cooks in the kitchen, the better. “Aquaman” wrapped filming last month. We’ll see the finished product when it opens in theaters on Dec. 21, 2018.

  • 12 Things You Won’t Believe ‘Justice League’ Got Away With

HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD: Do not read if you have not seen “Justice League” yet.

Hard truth time, guys: “Justice League” has a lot of plot holes and even more problematic storytelling decisions.

That’s pretty much par for the course with the DC Extended Universe at this point. From wacky Mother Box shenanigans to pretty much everything involving Aquaman, here are the biggest WTF moments we can’t believe this big-budget superhero epic managed to get away with.

    1. Why Would the Amazon Warriors Wear Leather Armor Bikini Things?A lot of Wonder Woman fans have pointed out an obvious disparity between “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League.” In the first movie, the Amazons wear rugged, battle-ready armor. In the big flashback battle in “Justice League,” their armor is quite a bit skimpier and more revealing.

It’s not like technology has changed on Themyscira in that time. The only thing that has changed between the two movies is the addition of male gaze.

    2. Why Resurrect Superman to Fight a Threat More Powerful Than the Thing That Killed Him?

It’s a little bizarre that the crux of Batman’s plan in the movie involved resurrecting Superman to help the team fight Steppenwolf, especially when Superman wasn’t strong enough to stop Doomsday in “BvS” without sacrificing himself in the process.

Why did Batman think one more hero would magically turn the tide? We’re starting to think he’s not the master strategist we’ve been led to believe.

    3. Why Introduce Aquaman if Water Has Nothing to Do With the Story or Final Fight?

Aquaman in this movie is basically a super powered ’90s Dan Cortese, but with a strong does of Lorenzo Llamas in “Renegade.”

There’s a lot we don’t understand about Aquaman’s role in the movie, including why he claims to be a young man despite being included in that clearly ancient mural of him saving the fishing village. Obviously, there’s a lot of Aquaman-related material that was cut from the final film. But at some point, you have to wonder why DC was so eager to introduce him now when his powers were so irrelevant to the plot? Why Aquaman and not Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern?

    4. Why Does Batman Let That Thug Go That He Used for Bait in the Opening Scene?
This opening sequence is so, so clunky in terms of editing and camera angles. And here, we get the impression that the DCEU version of Batman isn’t a guy who sweats the finer details of his job. Why else would he go through all the trouble of using that robber/thief as bait for a Parademon and then just let the guy flee?

Maybe the reason Gotham City is still a hellhole after two decades is that Batman can’t be bothered to actually round up the criminals he catches and bring them into GCPD custody. Oh, and did you like how this thief came to the conclusion that the parademon Batman captured was a “scout” for an army of aliens from outer space? Like, that was the first thing he came up with?! On his own?!

Also, if Steppenwolf’s weird, Watto-looking henchmen are all over the world, as Batman claims at one point, then why isn’t the world’s news or government agencies covering or policing them, respectively? Why does Jim Gordon only have a child’s sketch of the space beasties to work with? There would be pictures or YouTube vids everywhere of these things.

    5. Why Does the Final Battle Waste Batman by Having Fire a Ray Gun?

for use in 9.11 movie preview first (L-R)† GAL GADOT as Wonder Woman, BEN AFFLECK as Batman and EZRA MILLER as The Flash in Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Ratpac-Dune Entertainment LLC and Ratpac Entertainment, LLC HARWOOD Photographer

Batman is a useful guy to have around in a number of sticky situations, but an alien invasion isn’t necessarily one of them.

As we saw, Batman’s lack of powers made it difficult for him to take on even one Parademon, much less an army of them. But rather than find some way of allowing Batman’s intelligence and resources to win the day, the movie reduced him to doing the one thing he’s NEVER supposed to do — fire a gun at his enemies.

    6. Why Does This World Mourn the Loss of Superman as a Beacon of Hope?

We get it. The entire world is in mourning because they lost their brightest beacon of hope. But honestly, we’re not sure why anyone in the DCEU has reason to mourn the loss of this version of Superman.

What exactly did he do in “Man of Steel” or “Batman v Superman” that would have earned such an outpouring of love and respect? He helped wipe half of Metropolis off the map, couldn’t save an entire government courthouse from blowing up, and generally spent the entire time he was in costume moping and being miserable.

    7. Why Does Superman Hulk Out on the Justice League When He First Comes Back to Life?

Granted, it’s not like the DCEU filmmakers have established any clear rules when it comes to resurrection, but was there really a need for Superman to go on a murderous rampage as soon as he woke up?

If this guy is truly as kind and hopeful as the movie claims, wouldn’t he have a little more control of his actions than that? And wouldn’t he, you know, remember who Wonder Woman was? Wouldn’t he remember that he is a big fan of truth, justice and NOT MURDERING PEOPLE?!

    8. Why Does Superman’s Face Look so Bad?

WB infamously had to pay millions to digitally remove actor Henry Cavill‘s mustache during re-shoots. (The actor had a lip broom due to his work on the in-production “Mission: Impossible 6” that Paramount would not let him shave to help accommodate the “JL” reshoots.)

But when the results look this uncanny valley-y, at some point you have to question why they even bothered. Is a mustachioed Superman really worse than one whose face constantly looks like the villain from “Shrek” meets Bruce Campbell’s chin?

    9. Did The Filmmakers Not See ‘Wonder Woman’?

Batman had some pretty unkind things to say about Wonder Woman in this movie, accusing her of hiding from the world and failing to inspire others. Except, we see early on that she’s spending her free time stopping terrorists and generally saving lives across Europe. And this summer’s “Wonder Woman” established that she’s been quietly but steadfastly saving the world ever since WWI. Excuse her if she prefers not to be a showboat about it, Bruce.

    10. So The Justice League Is Totally Cool With Leaving the Last of the Planet-Destroying Mother Boxes Unguarded, Atop of a Car, in a Parking Lot?

The Justice League knew that they were stuck in a race against time to track down the Mother Boxes and stop Steppenwolf from ushering in another generic, CG-fueled superhero showdown. So why did it not occur to anyone on the team that maybe they should keep an eye on their lone Mother Box, rather than leave it sitting on the hood of a car, just waiting to be stolen away?

Honestly, they probably deserved to lose that final battle.

    11. What the Heck Is Up With the Mother Boxes?

Honestly, we could write a book about the number of Mother Box-related plot holes in this movie.

Why did they wait so long to activate? Sure, Steppenwolf explained that they waited until Superman was gone, but what about the thousands of years before Superman’s arrival, when Earth had no superhuman protectors? And why were all the Mother Boxes hidden on Earth, rather than scattered across the universe?

And if the Mother Boxes didn’t activate until Superman’s death, how was Dr. Stone able to use one to save his son, Cyborg, and allow for that cameo in “Batman v Superman”?

    12. Why Tease the Legion of Doom for ‘Justice League 2’ and Not, You Know, Darkseid?

The post-credits scene showed us the return of Lex Luthor and the DCEU debut of Deathstroke. But why focus on those villains and behave as if Deathstroke has been at all relevant to the DCEU before now?

Why not tease the debut of Darkseid, who’s clearly the real threat pulling the strings on Steppenwolf? Back when WB envisioned “Justice League” as a two-part film, we imagine Darkseid was next in line. But at this point, who knows when or if we’ll see the DCEU pick up that loose thread?

  • ‘Aquaman’ Is Shooting Most of Its Scenes Underwater, Making Production ‘Super Complicated’

Production is underway — and, literally, underwater — on “Aquaman,” the splashy spinoff flick featuring the Justice League member played by Jason Momoa. And according to director James Wan, the film’s reliance on using real effects whenever possible has posed a unique set of water-logged challenges for the flick.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wan lamented the difficulties of dedicating himself to verisimilitude when it comes to underwater scenes.

“It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on,” the director explained to THR. “Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex. … Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated. You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff. “

Using practical effects — a.k.a., eschewing CGI as much as possible — has become popular once again in Hollywood, with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” standing as the most famous recent example of the revived trend. Wan believes that that type of effect will make his film better, and as he tells THR, he believes all the hard work — and from the sound of it, frustration — will be worth it once audiences see the finished product.

” … [It’s] very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this,” the director told the trade. “So it’s not an easy shoot — but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”

Fans can judge for themselves when “Aquaman” hits theaters on December 21, 2018.

  • Amber Heard Shows Off Mera’s Very Red Hair in New ‘Aquaman’ Team Photo

2nd Annual Pride & Prejudice SummitWell, no one is going to miss Amber Heard on the set of “Aquaman,” that’s for sure.

From DC’s villainous Poison Ivy to Marvel’s heroic Medusa, comic books just love a fiery redhead, and Heard’s Mera shares the same bold look. Mera and title star Jason Momoa are currently filming DC’s “Aquaman,” directed by James Wan, and you can see the trio in Heard’s latest set photo:

We first got a look at that bright hair in photos shared back in May, after Amber Heard’s first day on the “Aquaman” set.

Mera will debut in “Justice League” this November, and the first photo shared of her Queen of Atlantis seemed to show a less bright hair color … or that could just be from director Zack Snyder’s lighting:

The brighter red hair for “Aquaman” does look faithful to the DC comics character, which suggests good things for purists. Either way, she looks stunning, and we’re excited to see more from her, Momoa, and the whole “Aquaman” crew.

“Justice League” opens November 17. “Aquaman” opens December 21, 2018.

  • Jason Momoa & Peter Dinklage Had the Most Badass ‘Game of Thrones’ Reunion

Tyrion Lannister and Khal Drogo probably would’ve had this much fun together, if they had ever met on “Game of Thrones.” Instead, actor Jason Momoa left after Season 1, and he’s now part of the DCEU as Aquaman, while Peter Dinklage prepares for his seventh season of Tyrion one-liners. But their GoT characters are both Team Dany, and the stars are clearly buds in real life. They’re also big Guns N’ Roses fans, and it looks like they bonded with the band and friends at a recent London concert.

Here’s how Momoa captioned the first photo below:

“LEGEND. SLASH. @slash @dannyminnick the adventures of me and Pete #gnrforlife #f*ckingslash aloha j”

OK, now we demand a GoT spinoff following “the adventures of Jason and Pete,” traveling to concerts around the world. HBO, get steppin’.

Here’s that photo, and more from the wild lads:

FYI, according to Screen Rant, it looks like Jason Momoa is done with his “Justice League” reshoots, and may be heading back for more on “Aquaman.” That’s based on this Instagram from Danny Minnick:

“Justice League” opens November 17. “Aquaman” is scheduled for release December 21, 2018. “Game of Thrones” Season 7 premieres Sunday, July 16 on HBO. You should also check out the first photo from Dinklage’s upcoming movie with Jamie Dornan.

  • See Amber Heard’s Photos From First Day on ‘Aquaman’ Set

Amber Heard Amber Heard shared a photo on Twitter of herself suited up for “Aquaman,” saying “Meet Mera. Day 1.” Director James Wan shared an equally stunning photo of the now red-haired actress as the sea goddess, aka Queen of Atlantis and Aquaman (Jason Momoa)’s wife.

Unless the color palette changes dramatically in the final film, Wan’s movie already looks a lot more colorful than the blue-and-gray tones of the same character in Zack Snyder‘s “Justice League.”

“Aquaman” opens on December 21, 2018. “Justice League” hits theaters on November 17, 2017.

Is it just us, or does Heard’s look here remind you of Batman villain Poison Ivy?

The actress also shared a photo on Instagram of herself in the make-up trailer while reading, natch, an Aquaman comic book.
