    First ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Washes Ashore

    Warner Bros/DC

Even though the character has appeared in two DC Extended Universe entries, whether or not Aquaman could carry an entire movie has been one of the biggest questions hanging over the entire interconnected series. Well, today during the Warner Bros panel at San Diego Comic Con, we finally got our first look at “Aquaman,” the stand-alone film hitting theaters this holiday season. And it is not at all what you were probably expecting.

This trailer is positively epic, with sea creatures, underwater civilizations, and some kind of breakthrough technology that makes actors’ hair look all wavy and underwater-y. Jason Momoa returns once again to play Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, who this time has to defuse a potential underwater civil war. This thing looks huge, like a combination of “Gladiator” and “Avatar,” with genuine visionary James Wan orchestrating the whole thing brilliantly. The star-studded cast includes Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren (!), and Nicole Kidman. If “Aquaman” wasn’t on your radar (sonar?) before, chances are it is now.

“Aquaman” splashes into theaters on December 21st.

It’s “Aquaman” week, and director James Wan is here as DC’s resident swim coach/lifeguard/snarky shark.

The first trailer will debut this Saturday during San Diego Comic-Con. The first poster just came out yesterday.

James Wan tweeted it out himself, and also fielded some questions from fans. Some of those questions earned some pretty classic replies, hinting to a really fun promotional circuit once this thing gets going. Just picture Jason Momoa and James Wan entertaining fans and re-trolling trolls one interview at a time.

Here’s James Wan replying to fans with questions on Aquaman/Arthur Curry’s leather pants, his underwater look, and the non-trident trident. (It’s not meant to be a trident, it’s a quindent, and the movie will explain how it once belonged to his mother, Nicole Kidman’s Queen Atlanna).

  • ‘Aquaman’ Poster Teases Jason Momoa’s Underwater World

    Warner Bros.

The filmmakers behind upcoming DCEU flick “Aquaman” have been teasing the movie’s impressive underwater effects for months, and now, fans have yet another look at some of those visuals with a new poster.

The one-sheet features the titular hero, played by Jason Momoa, perched on a rock in his vast below-surface kingdom. It’s a bit hard to make out exactly what that kingdom entails, though, because its buildings are almost entirely obscured by a gigantic, eclectic collection of aquatic life.

    Warner Bros.

Dozens of great white sharks, hammerheads, killer whales, dolphins, manta rays, swordfish, and sea turtles are crammed into the frame, swirling around the mischievous-looking Aquaman. We think we even spy a couple humpback whales lurking in the distance. It’s clear that this hero is in control of his realm, and pretty pleased with himself over it.

That’s about to change, though, as the standalone flick explores new challenges Aquaman faces for his throne. We’ve already seen some photos teasing a battle that employs some of this poster’s great white sharks, and we imagine our hero has even more tricks up his sleeve when it comes to employing the ocean’s bounty.

“Aquaman” also stars Amber HeardWillem DafoeTemuera MorrisonDolph LundgrenYahya Abdul-Mateen IIPatrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman. It’s due to swim into theaters on December 21.

  • New ‘Aquaman’ Photos Show Army Riding Great White Sharks Into Battle

    Sharknado 7: Atlantis vs. Xebel!

DC’s “Aquaman” is on the new cover of Entertainment Weekly, and EW recently shared a bunch of new photos, including the first look at Black Manta.

Today, EW posted our first look underwater at the armies of Atlantis’ King Orm (Patrick Wilson) and Xebel’s King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) facing off at The Council of the Kings.

The Atlantean army is on the right, riding great white sharks into battle, with the warriors of Xebel riding sea dragons.

  • ‘Aquaman’ Photos Reveal Nicole Kidman, Black Manta, New Mera Look

DC is finally giving fans a deep dive into its upcoming standalone feature “Aquaman,” revealing two new characters — and a brand new look for another character — in some first look photos.

The images come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which features the cast of “Aquaman” on its cover this week. In addition to the the titular hero, played by Jason Momoa, the cover includes the film’s two female leads: Amber Heard as Mera, Aquaman’s wife (reprising her role from “Justice League”), and Nicole Kidman making her debut as Queen Atlanna, Aquaman’s mother.

This is the first time fans have seen Kidman’s character, and she looks just as regal as you’d expect the Oscar-winning actress to look as underwater royalty, sporting an awesome silver headpiece and a scaly silvery jumpsuit. Heard is also wearing a similar look, though her character’s color scheme has been amped up considerably from the last time fans saw her onscreen; now, Mera is resplendent in a bright emerald green suit and fiery red hair.

Aside from those fierce females, EW also debuted a sneak peek at one of the film’s villains, Black Manta, though not in costume just yet. Instead, we see his alter ego, David Kane (played by “The Get Down” star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), tinkering with the character’s helmet, which features its signature red eyes (which will eventually shoot plasma beams).

DC is already hyping the flick pretty hard, branding it as “extraordinary” and a rebirth of sorts for its beleaguered DCEU. Based on what we’ve heard and seen so far, “Aquaman” certainly seems like a step in the right direction.

The film is due to make waves in theaters on December 21.

  • ‘Aquaman’ Producer Says ‘Extraordinary’ Movie Puts DCEU ‘On the Right Path’

It will be a while before fans get to see upcoming DC standalone flick “Aquaman,” but according to the team behind the film, it will be more than worth the wait.

In a series of interviews with Entertainment Weekly, producers and Warner Bros. executives touted the Jason Momoa flick, and director James Wan‘s vision in particular. Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich praised the “incredible job” that Wan and his team have done on the film, which is “imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”

The labor-intensive effects that went into the flick have been duly noted (and are at least partially responsible for all of the delays that have plagued the project). But it’s the film’s eclectic tone that will really set it apart from other DC Extended Universe offerings, producer Peter Safran told EW.

“[The film has] the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision,” Safran explained. “I think it’s an extraordinary step in [the] DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”

That should certainly be music to DC fans’ ears — and have them eager to open their wallets. “Aquaman” is due in theaters on December 21.

  • James Wan Announces ‘Swamp Thing’ Series for New ‘DC Universe’ SVOD Platform

James Wan is currently putting together the DC Extended Universe’s “Aquaman” for release in theaters in November. But he’s also busy producing on the side, including in his beloved horror niche.

Wan just teased his involvement in “Swamp Thing,” which DC is developing for the new SVOD streaming service called DC Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the live-action drama has a script-to-series order. Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman will co-write the script and serve as showrunners, with James Wan as one of the executive producers.

Here are details on “Swamp Thing, via DC Comics:

“When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland—only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous—and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.”

DC Comics also just promoted its new DC Universe service, which is where “Swamp Thing” will stream.

DC Universe describes itself as “a first-of-its kind, immersive digital experience designed just for DC fans.”

“Swamp Thing” is scheduled to premiere in 2019, and would be the fifth original series for the DC Universe, following “Titans,” “Young Justice: Outsiders,” “Harley Quinn,” and “Metropolis.”

  • ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Star Randall Park Joins ‘Aquaman’

Randall ParkAdding a whole new character in reshoots? Why not? Fresh Off the Boat,” has joined DCEU’s “Aquaman” as new character Dr. Steven Shin.

Director James Wan shared the news via Twitter yesterday.

According to the “Aquaman” Wiki, Shin “helped a young Aquaman develop his powers, but would later grow obsessed with finding out where the lost city of Atlantis was located.”

The WB superhero movie, which stars Jason Momoa as the title character, is set for a December 21, 2018 release date. That’s after being bumped from July 27 and then to October 5, 2018.

Wan revealed that filming underwater (or pretending to film underwater) has been tough: “It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on,” he told THR in August 2017. “Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex.”

He addressed the rumors about the film’s delay last month, saying he was still tweaking the film,” I am simply not ready yet to share. This movie is filled to the gills with VFX, and the process is as slow and laborious as a sea-slug! Yes, even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as sub-par.” He added that he and his cast and crew were “working non-stop below the waves.”

Park is also appearing in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (from rival Marvel) as Jimmy Woo. That’s out July 6.

  • James Wan Addresses ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Rumors & Reason for Wait

    Where art thou, “Aquaman”?

A test screening for the DCEU’s next movie — starring Jason Momoa (Arthur Curry/Aquaman) and Amber Heard (Mera) — supposedly happened in February, and went very well. The first official “Aquaman” trailer was rumored to debut this past weekend at WonderCon … but that didn’t happen.

Turns out, it was never going to happen because director James Wan is still busy tweaking the film.

Australians In Film's 5th Annual Awards Gala - Red CarpetJames Wan set the record straight on Twitter:

So far, fans are putting their trust in James Wan to deliver for the DCEU, with fingers crossed for minimal-to-no meddling from Warner Bros.:

“Aquaman” is scheduled for release in theaters December 21st.

  • ‘Aquaman’ Early Test Screening Report: Fans ‘Loved’ Action-Packed, ‘Emotional’ Film

Then again … there were similar positive early reactions to “Batman v Superman,” “Suicide Squad” and “Justice League.”

DC fans still have high hopes for director James Wan‘s “Aquaman,” which stars Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, and arrives in theaters December 21. That’s a long way from February, and we know there’s still a lot of work to be done. But Batman-News revealed an early test screening just took place, and got an initial positive response:

They also answered some questions on the film and the screening itself:

Here’s more from the Batman-News report:

“I was told that the tone is similar to Wonder Woman. There is humor, but it’s more of a drama. And thanks to director James Wan’s previous work, there are elements of horror as well.

Aquaman has Star Wars-like underwater battles, scary monsters, lots of emotions, and an amazing villain in Orm, played by Patrick Wilson. Amber Heard’s Mera is very much a co-lead and not just a love interest to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.”

Head here for more spoilery details.

Many fans are still skeptical, considering the results from previous praise:

But this is James Wan, director of “Saw,” “Furious 7,” and “The Conjuring.” He’s a new face on the landscape, and that worked out well with Patty Jenkins and DC’s “Wonder Woman,” so there’s still hope that he’ll bring a welcome fresh perspective to the DCEU.

“Aquaman” wrapped filming back in October. After “Justice League” came out in November, introducing Atlantis, James Wan reassured fans that there would be no “air bubbles for dialogue” in his movie. “Aquaman” is scheduled for release December 21st, 2018.
