Premiering January 28th on Apple TV+ is the new murder mystery comedy ‘The Afterparty,’ from Oscar winning producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’).

The series features an impressive cast of comedic actors that include Tiffany Haddish (‘Girls Trip’), Sam Richardson (‘The Tomorrow War’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Zoe Chao (‘The High Note’), Ike Barinholtz (‘Suicide Squad’), Ilana Glazer (‘Rough Night’), and Dave Franco (‘The Disaster Artist’).

‘The Afterparty’ revolves around a murder that takes place at a high school reunion after party, and each episode is told from a different character’s point of view. Lord and Miller serve as executive producers and both co-wrote several episodes, with Miller also directing the entire series.

Moviefone recently had a chance to speak with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller about their new Apple TV+ series, as well as some of the cast from ‘The Afterparty’ Including Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Zoe Chao, Ike Barinholtz, Dave Franco, and Ilana Glazer.

Below you can read our full interview with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller about ‘The Afterparty,’ or you can watch the complete set of interviews in the video player above.

Moviefone: Chris, can you begin by talking about the genesis of the idea for the series, and also deciding to have each episode focus on a different character’s point of view?

Christopher Miller: It was a little over a decade ago that I had the idea to tell a murder mystery in a Rashomon style where each suspect would tell their version of the evening and it would be wildly different from the other ones. We were going to make it, we wrote it as a movie, and then we got busy making ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and whatnot.

But when we got a breath of air, we revisited it and thought this would work better as a series because in a movie, you didn’t have time to really dig to each character. But as a series, you could give each character their own episode and really understand them as more complex characters. You could really learn to empathize and love each of them, and hope that they didn’t do it. So, as that was evolving, we realized that to push their style of storytelling, stylistically and thematically, we can make each episode feel like a different genre of filmmaking and storytelling.

Then it evolved even farther, and we got an amazing writing staff full of really cool people. With the structure and outline already intact, they were able to turn it into something really special. But it was a really mind exploding process because if you’re working on episode four and you want to change something there, it affects everything in all the other episodes. So, you have to keep the whole thing in your head like this giant machinery of a massive clock in your head. It would really explode people’s heads from time to time.

MF: Phil, was making a murder mystery something you always wanted to do?

Phil Lord: I think Chris and I are fans of ‘Clue,’ ‘The Last of Sheila’ and ‘Murder by Death.’ There’s a long proud history of mixing comedy and murder and we’ve always been interested in what’s a unique way to pull that off. Chris had been developing this as a script for a long time for a feature. When he thought of the idea of breaking it into episodes, and then each of those episodes would have its own filmmaking style and you would get to know each of these characters even more deeply, that’s when it really took off for us and felt like it was going to be worth doing.

MF: Phil, because each episode contains events seen from different characters perspectives, can you talk about how production actually worked?

PL: So, the whole show, more or less, we batch shot it. Meaning that we would shoot a scene in a hallway that was like a fun rom-com and then, “Okay everyone, let’s go to lunch, we’ll come back and now it’s a dark thriller.” That’s part of the fun of it, honestly, but the poor actors did need a second to switch modes.

MF: Chris, can you talk about the impressive cast of actors you assembled and the challenges for them with the different tones in each episode?

CM: We got so lucky to get like a real murderer’s row, pun intended, of comedy geniuses. What was especially great about all of them is that so many of them are writers, filmmakers or show creators in their own rights. So, they really were smart about also holding this whole show in their heads, because asking an actor to be able to just do a character is one thing, but to do a character with eight different shadings of that character is a really big ask. It has to be people who are really smart and savvy, and luckily, they all were amazing, and they added so much to it. We all had a great time together and it was a real love fest. You could really feel the chemistry and joy on the screen.

Premiering January 28th on Apple TV+ is the new murder mystery comedy ‘The Afterparty,’ from the creative minds of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’). The series features an impressive cast of comedic actors including Tiffany Haddish (‘Girls Trip’), Sam Richardson (‘The Tomorrow War’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Zoe Chao (‘The High Note’), Ike Barinholtz (‘Suicide Squad’), Ilana Glazer (‘Rough Night’), and Dave Franco (‘The Disaster Artist’).

The eight-part series revolves around a murder that takes place at a high school reunion after party, and each episode is told from a different character’s perspective. The result is an innovative and hilarious whodunit with a charming cast led by Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson and Ben Schwartz.

The series begins by introducing us to Aniq (Richardson), who is reluctantly attending his high school reunion in hopes of seeing the girl he had a crush on, Zoe (Chao). He first finds his friend Yasper (Schwartz), before eventually reuniting with Zoe. He is delighted to find that she is recently separated from Brett (Barinholtz), who Aniq thinks took her from him when they were in high school. But Aniq’s good time with Zoe is interrupted by the arrival of Xavier (Franco), who was a nerd in high school but is now a famous pop star and actor.

Trouble begins when Xavier invites everyone over to his mansion for an after party, and he is soon murdered by one of his guests. Enter Detective Danner (Haddish), who suspects Aniq of the murder and questions him about the events of the night. Soon, everyone becomes a suspect and while Danner investigates and questions the other guests, Yasper tries to help Aniq clear his name.

After seeing their previous work, including the Oscar winning animated movie ‘Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ it’s no surprise that a new streaming series from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be fresh, funny, and completely unique.

A high school reunion is a perfect backdrop for a comedic mystery and the characters are both over-the-top yet very relatable. The choice to center each episode on a particular character’s point of view of the evening’s events was brilliant, as it allows each character to come alive in a different way, and lets the actors play different versions of their characters.

The ensemble cast is excellent, led by Tiffany Haddish as the outsider investigating the murder, Detective Danner. Haddish brings her own brand of humor to the series, while never overshadowing the plot or the other actors. She is especially excellent in the penultimate episode, where her character’s backstory is finally revealed.

Sam Richardson is really the anchor of the series, as Aniq is the main character that we are rooting for to not only clear his name but win back Zoe’s heart as well. Richardson plays the role a bit nerdish, which is where the real comedy comes in. Equally great is Ben Schwartz as Aniq’s friend Yasper, who gets to perform a full-on musical during his character specific episode.

Dave Franco is also hilarious as pop star Xavier, who ends up being the murder victim. The actor plays his character like an arrogant, insecure jerk, who you sympathize with once his backstory is revealed. Franco does some of his best work channeling a Justin Bieber/Machine Gun Kelly type character. Another funny character is Jamie Demetriou’s Walt, who is the guy from high school that no one remembers, which leads to some hilarious moments.

Comedian Ike Barinholtz was perfectly cast as Brett, the high school bully who rivals Aniq for Zoe’s affection. The actor plays the role of a real jerk, but also shows us a bit of his character’s vulnerable side throughout the first season. Ilana Glazer, best known for her Comedy Central series ‘Broad City,’ has some great moments playing the pivotal role of Chelsea, a character that has more going on under the surface than it first appears.

However, if there is a weak link in the cast, unfortunately its Zoe Chao, who plays Zoe. Her character never really rises to the level that you understand why Aniq, and Brett for that matter, care for her so much. Her character’s point-of-view episode helps to explain her different personalities with some really entertaining animation, but it doesn’t come until the sixth episode, which is a little late in the season to finally make the character interesting.

One of the great aspects of ‘The Afterparty,’ which is baked into the Rashomon concept, is that nothing is as it seems. So, truly any character, even Aniq or Detective Danner, could be the murderer! My money is on Yasper, who just seems a little too nice, and a little too eager to help Aniq clear his name. But I also think it’s possible that Xavier is not dead, which could be the season’s big twist.

Full disclosure, critics were only given the first seven episodes to screen, so your guess is as good as mine as to who the true killer is.

In the end, ‘The Afterparty’ is a true joy to watch, and a murder-mystery-comedy on level with classics from the genre like ‘Clue.’ Lord and Miller have assembled a marvelous cast, which is truly a pleasure to watch. The characters are both ridiculous and relatable, and the show’s unique concept makes it a series that you won’t want to miss.

‘The Afterparty’ receives 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Jack McBrayer on his new series ‘Hello, Jack!’

    5ZoY9mnq

The new Apple TV+ series ‘Hello, Jack! The Kindness Show’ is aimed at pre-schoolers and stars Jack McBrayer as he inspires kids to solve problems with “The Three Cs” – caring, connecting, and cascading. Executive Producer Angela Santomero co-created the series with McBrayer, and they both sat down to talk to Moviefone about their new series.

Moviefone: Well, Jack, tell me about where the idea came from.

Jack McBrayer: Well, it did come from a very personal place for me, where I was just noticing how grownups were behaving towards each other. There seemed to be a lack of compassion, a lack of civility, a lack of kindness. And so I thought about when we, as humans, learn these lessons and I started thinking about my preschool years and the television programs that I grew up with, specifically ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,’ and how learning those social and emotional lessons… maybe every now and then we need to be reminded of them. So I’m happy to pick up the baton.

MF: Especially during the pandemic. I don’t know how this timed out. Was this idea before, or was this during this time when we’ve been isolated at home?

McBrayer: Long before, long before. I think I met with Apple in 2018 and the good news is over the past couple of years, we have been able to, even through Zoom, write the scripts, cast the show, get a lot of work done before we actually try to get in there and film.

MF: So Angela, Jack comes to you with this idea, and it’s very specific. It’s not like, “Let’s do a kid show, and we’re going to do A-B-Cs and one-two-threes and also learn about some life lessons.” He says, “It’s kindness.” What’s your reaction?

Angela Santomero: You know, for me, kindness has always been at the foundation of everything that I’ve ever done, right? And so it was just serendipitous to meet and to bond over our love of Fred Rogers, and what can we do for kids today? And then it really became the idea that kindness is the tool to tell the great stories that we wanted to tell and to build out this gorgeous world. We had our writing meetings and Jack’s in our meetings, and then see the visuals that came out after that because all of these great ideas to create this world and showcase, visually, kindness growing was really the spark and the excitement for the show.

MF: Jack, can you try to describe visually for our audience? What it looks like, the show?

McBrayer: Imagine a pastel dream. No, it’s very gentle. It’s very kid friendly. It is very pastel, but it reminded me of just this magical dream world in a way. It was fun to have not only our younger actors join us every day, but whenever we’d have any background or guests come in, they were just so taken by everything. And I’m including the wardrobe, the props, all of the design elements came together to create this sort of dream world. But we wanted it to feel realistic enough where kids at home would want to come and visit us, so the invitation stands.

Santomero: And then I have to say the inspiration of ‘Gilmore Girls’ that there’s this gorgeous neighborhood that everybody knows each other, that they’re always saying hello and all that kind of stuff. That’s also what was in our head, I think a little bit.

MF: Yeah, I really love that community feeling, and I wore my pastel-y lavender sweater thinking about The Hummingbird Café, and Jack, your character, because you’re always kind of in sweaters…

    McBrayer: Yeah.

MF: Kind of the Mr. Rogers feel, right? Angela, what age group are you aiming for?

Santomero: It’s preschool. Those are the best. That’s the best age. Preschool and then co-viewing for parents, right? Like sitting and snuggling and watching and asking questions. That’s what we hope.

MF: And Jack, there are the three Cs that you’re trying to hit in this show. So what are those three Cs?

McBrayer: Three Cs, we want to explore connection, we want to explore caring, and we want to explore the cascade of kindness that can occur from that, sharing acts and words of kindness from one person to the next.

MF: Angela, I’m sure you have some advisors for this show. What does that all entail?

Santomero: We do. We have an amazing advisor. I’ll let Jack speak to that because it was his excitement to get Dr. Junlei Li, but we also have a formative research department. So every idea, every installation of a script, as we start to visualize the script, we bring it into our research department who takes it up to kids and watches them lean in and get excited. And we also rewrite and we re-talk about what we’re going to be doing, so that’s really exciting as well. And then Dr. Junlei Li…

McBrayer:So we have Dr. Junlei Li come in as a consultant. This man is a legend in children, childhood education and development. I had met him at a convention. His lecture was what would Fred Rogers think about current day? And to me, it was like a light from heaven. I was like, I want to know everything this man can teach me. He’s been a great, great asset for this project.

MF: Okay, before we go, we need to talk about songs, original songs and the singing. So what are those original songs? And what’s it like? You do a lot of singing.

McBrayer: I do, but the music come from this incredible band, OK Go. Check them out, watch their amazing videos. It was such an honor to have them come on and create an original song for every episode, as well as our theme song, the closing song. I’ve been a fan of theirs for so long. So, I mean, I think the first part was me just trying to act normal. Like yes, yes, what a wonderful idea. “Hey, when you sang this one song…” I was totally fanboying out, but OK Go was just a tremendous get for us.

MF: I know you’ve done voice-overs for some kids shows, but in general we don’t think about you acting live, doing kid shows. So it’s a break. It’s a break from what we’re used to, and how is that for you?

McBrayer: Well, I mean the good news is I have experience doing live action through shows like ‘30 Rock’ and then the voice acting is super fun. And so I was real happy to kind of bring this together where children can watch a grown man address them directly through the screen. And again, hearkening back to Fred Rogers, be that source of listening and caring and connecting and understanding. I was happy to do that. Very happy to do it.

    Good morning, “Morning Show”!

Apple has released the first teaser for its highly anticipated drama starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell, set in the world of early morning television.

The teaser, which runs just over a minute, features no footage of the three actors, only dramatic voice-overs — starting with Aniston saying, “Good morning. I’m bringing you some sad and upsetting news.”

The camera takes us into through the office of Mitch Kessler (Carell), an anchor who is struggling to maintain relevance in a changing media landscape. A photo of Kessler with Aniston’s character indicates they serve as co-hosts of the titular show.

The drama was ordered straight to series by Apple for its forthcoming streaming service, after it won an intense bidding war. It comes from showrunner Kerry Ehrin and draws background material from CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter’s 2013 book “Top of the Morning,” which chronicles the rivalry between NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Apple TV+ is slated to launch this fall. “Morning Show” does not yet have a premiere date.

British royalty and American TV royalty are colliding!

Apple and Kensington Palace announced that Prince Harry is teaming up with Oprah Winfrey for a documentary series on mental health to air on Apple TV+.

Last month, Winfrey joined a handful of other A-list stars to unveil Apple TV+ and its slate of shows, including this multi-part docuseries.

At the time, she said it would show “how the scourge of depression and anxiety, post-traumatic stress, addiction, trauma and loss is just devastating lives daily across the globe.”

Kensington Palace noted that the Duke of Sussex has been engaged in “long-standing work on issues and initiatives regarding mental health, where he has candidly shared personal experience and advocated for those who silently suffer, empowering them to get the help and support they deserve.”

In recent years, Prince Harry has spoken candidly about his own mental health struggles after the death of his mother, Princess Diana.

In a statement, the Duke of Sussex said, “I truly believe that good mental health – mental fitness – is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities and a purpose-driven self.”

“It is a huge responsibility to get this right as we bring you the facts, the science and the awareness of a subject that is so relevant during these times. Our hope is that this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive – sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us better.”

Winfrey was a guest at Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle last year.

  • Apple Officially Unveils its TV Service, Apple TV+

Apple Officially Unveils its TV Service, Apple TV+

    Apple TV

At a splashy event at its campus in Cupertino, California on Monday, Apple finally unveiled its standalone TV service, including the official name and several of the big projects it will house. Along with those answers, though, there remained some key questions.

During the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the service will be called Apple TV+, and it will launch sometime this fall (an exact debut date is TBA). The subscription service will be available to all — and is not exclusive to Apple devices — in more than 100 countries; it will be ad-free, and most of its content will be downloadable.

No pricing structure has been revealed yet.

Many major stars were on hand to introduce their projects for the service, including Steven Spielberg (who’s producing a revival anthology of “Amazing Stories”); Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carell (who are starring in a morning TV drama that now has an official title: “The Morning Show”); Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard (starring in sci-fi series “See,” about a world in which sight no longer exists); and Kumail Nanjiani (“Little America,” which tells true stories of immigrants from across the world who move to the United States).

Even Big Bird made an appearance, introducing “Helpsters,” from the makers of “Sesame Street,” which will teach preschoolers about coding skills. And J.J. Abrams and Sara Bareilles were on hand to tout “Little Voice” (Bareilles performed the titular theme song), a series about a young woman finding her voice through music.

Apple saved the biggest surprise for last, bringing out Oprah to announce that she’s reviving her immensely popular Book Club as a new series for the service. She’s also filming two documentaries for Apple TV+, one about sexual assault and one about mental health.

One of the biggest gaps in the presentation, however, was the lack of clips — or even key art — from any of the announced projects, aside from a quick sneak peek package that spliced together a few seconds from each series. Instead, Apple offered a slick video introducing the service, featuring talking heads from several of the above creators, as well as collaborators including Sofia Coppola, M. Night Shyamalan, Ron Howard, Octavia Spencer, Hailee Steinfeld, Damien Chazelle.

Stay tuned for additional Apple TV+ details as Apple unveils them.
