Tom Wolfe’s trenchant New York society satire ‘The Bonfire of the Vanities’ has a somewhat checkered history on the screen –– despite Brian De Palma directing and a cast that included Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis in the cast, the 1990 movie adaptation was a notorious flop.

But that isn’t stopping ‘Presumed Innocent’ showrunner David E. Kelley and ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves, who are teaming up to adapt the story for Apple TV.

While we would assume Reeves would be spending all his time preparing to shoot ‘The Batman’ sequel, he seems to have the bandwidth to work on another project –– and chances are the show might not be ready to go before cameras until he’s done with the main production on the movie.

Wolfe’s 1987 novel follows a Wall Street bond trader named Sherman McCoy, the quintessential master of the universe, who lives a charmed life until he takes a wrong turn, ends up in the Bronx, and his frightened mistress takes the wheel and runs over a Black man who approached the couple. Cue chaos!

Kelley is still aboard ‘Presumed Innocent’, which is going the anthology route for its second season, switching up the story and cast to include Rachel Brosnahan as the lead.

Reeves, as mentioned, is in pre-production on his ‘Batman’ follow-up, but he’s also a prolific producer, attached to various DC properties and others.

Jason Segel and Harrison Ford in ‘Shrinking’ Season 3, premiering January 28, 2026 on Apple TV.

Arriving on Apple TV on January 28 with its first new episode (followed by one episode weekly) is the third season of ‘Shrinking,’ starring (and co-created by Jason Segel (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’).

    ON4nyOkhez4R8sZzMON3

The cast for the show also includes Harrison Ford (‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’), Christa Miller (‘Scrubs’), Lukita Maxwell (‘Afraid’), Jessica Williams (‘Booksmart’), Ted McGinley (‘Silent Thunder’) and Michael Urie (‘Ugly Betty’).

In keeping with other shows co-created by Bill Lawrence (‘Spin City’), ‘Shrinking’ has long since evolved from a focus on Jason Segel and Harrison Ford’s therapist characters to embrace a wider circle of friends and relations.

The third season keeps that idea and feeling intact, and also maintains the entertainingly loose comedy atmosphere while also delivering the occasional emotional gut punch.

Lawrence, Segel and co-creator Brett Goldstein (‘Ted Lasso’) lead the writing team down some familiar paths here, but that doesn’t stop the show from still being a successful, warm, easy watch.

There’s rarely much that is truly challenging here (though some topics, such as Parkinson’s and grief are still explored), but the vibe really is a group of characters you’re happy to spend time with.

In terms of directors, the likes of Zach Braff (‘Garden State’) and James Ponsoldt (‘The Spectacular Now’)  keep the visuals calm and easy, letting the performances do the heavy lifting here.

The core ensemble remains excellent, funny and heartfelt as they follow their various paths.

But it’s in the new additions that we find some real fun –– Michael J. Fox shines as a Parkinson’s patient who interacts with Ford, while Sherry Cola is great as one of Gabby’s new therapy clients who is reticent to open up.

The new season doesn’t exactly break massive new ground, but with a show like ‘Shrinking,’ you neither expect or want that.

What it does do is offer more chances for the characters to interact in fun, warm ways.

‘Shrinking’ Season 3 receives 76 out of 100.

‘Shrinking’ follows a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives… including his own.

It might not be quite as well known as the Monsterverse movies, but Apple TV’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ has certainly drawn its own fanbase.

And now, it has proved successful enough that the company has commissioned a spin-off, one that will revolve around Colonel Lee Shaw, the character played in his younger days by Wyatt Russell.

The new series doesn’t yet have a title, but we do wonder if this means there won’t be any opportunity for the older version of Shaw –– played by Russell’s father, Kurt Russell –– to show up.

Given the sterling quality and awards haul of both ‘Breaking Bad’ and its prequel ‘Better Call Saul,’ there are naturally a lot of eyes on what creator Vince Gilligan does next. Can it live up to the zeitgeisty power and acting quality of either?

The good news with his new series, Pluribus, is that it definitely feels of a par with those shows. The bad news for reviewers at least is that it’s very difficult to talk about without broaching spoiler agreements.

Gilligan, who kicks off the series writing and directing at least the first two, has pulled off a minor miracle here, creating a drama with dark comedy running through it that manages to be both high concept and emotional.

And he has built a powerhouse central character for lead Rhea Seehorn, who plays Carol Sturka, a misanthropic romance writer who is confronted with a very confusing, challenging situation that makes her even more of an outsider than usual.

Gilligan and his fellow directors employ the measured, deliberate style of the previous shows, beautifully shot and superbly acted.

Karolina Wydra in ‘Pluribus,’ premiering November 7, 2025 on Apple TV.

Seehorn is the anchor here and the actor, who was unbelievably snubbed for awards during her ‘Saul’ run, puts in a truly impressive performance. While some might be turned off by the rampant negativity of her character, she brings such depth and layers to the role and is endlessly watchable.

Around her, the likes of Karolina Wydra, Miriam Shor and Samba Schutte also impress, but to say any more about their characters would be to risk giving too much away.

Moviefone: To begin with, Haley, this is a fantastic series! Can you talk about your first reaction to reading the screenplay for the pilot?

Haley Bennett: Thank you. That just attributes to our incredible writer, Jon Bokenkamp and we were just in such good hands with Jon Bokenkamp, Apple TV and with Jason Clarke producing this show. We feel so grateful and so privileged to be getting the feedback we’ve been getting for the show. What I love about the show is that it has this epic scope and this incredible budget and it’s such elevated television. But at the same time, I’m used to just doing little independent films and getting to explore characters on a much smaller scale, but we were able to explore both with our scenes between us and to be able to create incredibly real and fleshed out characters. Which is what Apple, I think, is so genius and brilliant at creating. It’s like the balance of both of those things.

MF: Haley, can you talk about your approach to playing Sydney and what is it like playing a character with so many secrets?

HB: Sydney is a character who’s someone that obviously has a lot of problems, a lot of demons, she’s been condemned by the CIA. She’s sent to Alaska to help with this crisis of this plane crash, and she knows the person that is that the CIA is looking for better than anybody. I loved her shades of gray. I loved her moral ambiguity and how I felt about her at first glance was very different as I read kind of these later episodes. I realized that what she represented was something far different than what I had originally believed about her. So, I just felt that that was a great opportunity to get to play a character who has this incredible arc and isn’t always what you see is what you get, but that has all these secrets that can destroy and that have catastrophic consequences.

'The Last Frontier,' premiering October 10, 2025 on Apple TV+.
‘The Last Frontier,’ premiering October 10, 2025 on Apple TV+.

MF: Dominic, so much is said about Havlock in the first episode before we ever see you on screen. How did that help you to create this character?

Dominic Cooper: There’s such a wealth of information in this script. For the first time ever, I don’t think it’s ever happened before, but we all 10 episodes have been handed to you before you begin. So, you have this wealth of information about the person you’re going to play, which is daunting. Just the character when I when I list the things that were presented in front of me, a Navy SEAL, CIA operative, mathematician, lecturer, I couldn’t come up with things that are further from who I am as a person, but it was a wonderful challenge to be presented with. Then a lot of the time you’re having to sit alone and write your history or decide on things that you have no real idea about. You’re not really that confident because you’ve made it up yourself. But with this, I could go backwards and forwards. I could listen to what people say about him. I could find the future and the flashbacks. It gave such a strong flavor of who this guy was. It’s been interesting to hear what people think of him. They keep mentioning devious and villainous and a bit of a murky moral compass. But I just saw him as someone who was trying to be killed and surviving and loved the people he cared about and was trying to do to reveal some truth and honesty about what was happening in the world. So, I had a lot of help and the showrunner who knew the material inside out because he’d had it for a long time. So, there’s no preparation. You still think you’re terrible in it, you still think that you’ve done a bad job, you still don’t believe in anything you do. But all you can do is have trust and utilize the information that’s presented before you.

MF: Finally, Dominic, can you talk about the cat and mouse game that begins between Havlock and Frank, and why Havlock takes an interest in him?

DC: I realize more now in watching it again, another tough thing about playing him in the cat and mouse relationship, I don’t ever get any scenes with him (Jason Clarke). I have one scene with him, essentially, where we’re face to face. I remember thinking, what a relief and how lovely it was to work with him. I was really happy because you get so much from actors, you look in their eyes and you listen, and you absorb and that completely informs your reaction. Nothing else does. Half of my stuff was into a radio without the person there and that was hard. So, it was very nice. But you don’t have that feeling of the day’s work and we got somewhere together, that you reached somewhere together. It was a bit like, “Oh, that’s done” and you don’t know whether it’s right because you also don’t hear the tone of how that person’s going to play it. So, you’re just doing it into a void. It’s still quite interesting. He’s so he’s so ahead of Frank. I just had to think of the bigger picture and go, “Well, actually, it’s so clever this”, you know, he’s there, he’s not there. I felt like I was in safe hands in terms of the guidance from both director and showrunner, but it was sad to have that wonderful cat and mouse, but not be present with the person.

Creators Bokenkamp and D’Ovidio have worked in both television and features, and the show feels like a mix of the two, but still works well. If you expect the prisoner transport concept to be a remake of ‘The Fugitive’ blended with ‘Con Air’, think again –– there are complications ahoy here.

Sam Hargrave directs the pilot and one other episode and sets the tone for the show, which takes its episode titles from the needle drops that appear and help the mood of the show. This is a stylish, action-packed affair.

Clarke is suitably gritty and charismatic as the US Marshall with a past of his own, who plays well against Hayley Bennett’s shady, troubled CIA agent.

While Dominic Cooper’s Levi Hartman sometimes verges into being that magical type who can do anything, he anchors the role with real emotion. And keep an eye out for some even bigger names glimpsed briefly in the chaotic opening plane crash who will come into play later in the season.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about how you got involved with this project and when conducting the interviews with Martin Scorsese, what was it like essentially directing the greatest director of all time?

Rebecca Miller: Well, I got involved with it really by a formless hunch, a feeling. I had made another documentary, Damon Cardasis my producing partner said, “What would you like to do?” Because I said I’d like to make another one. He said, “What’s the subject?” I thought of Martin Scorsese first. You know, he made it so easy in a way to interview him. He almost makes fun of himself in the very beginning of the series where he’s making jokes about, “You need a slate” and stuff like that. But really, he was just so open, I think, is the word. Just very open. I wasn’t really directing him so much as just listening to him, you know, and then asking the next question. We led each other into some very unexpected places.

MF: Mr. Scorsese has had many great collaborators over the years, but the three that stick out from the documentary were Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Can you talk about interviewing them and is there a through line between their collaborations that you can put your finger on?

RM: The first word that comes to mind is trust. In fact, he mentions that with regards to them. You know, he knew that De Niro, even though he was becoming a star after ‘Mean Streets’, he could trust him. That he wasn’t going to abandon him or allow anyone to take the work away from him, because that was still a possibility from Marty at that time. With Thelma, he knew that he could trust her to help him make the work that he needed to make and not be obstructionist or egotistical about it. The same thing with, I think with Leonardo, because that’s what Marty needs is to be able to trust people that he’s collaborating with. Then once that trust is there, you’re free to experiment and to really be wild because you trust each other.

MF: Of all the interviews you did with Mr. Scorsese’s friends, family and colleagues, was there one interview that really surprised you and was there anyone you wanted to speak with but were unable to?

RM: I got to talk to so many people, and people that I never expected to be able to speak to. His childhood friends were like a particular boon, it was just so amazing that I got to talk to them, especially because one of them died shortly after I interviewed him. But also, the model for Johnny Boy (from ‘Mean Streets’), you know, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I didn’t even know that I would necessarily have them.

MF: Can you talk about pacing and the challenge of fitting in all aspects of Mr. Scorsese’s life and career into just five episodes?

RM: I mean, I didn’t want to rush, but on the other hand, I really wanted there to be a sense of pacing and of urgency, because his work has that, and his personality has that. I wanted it to reflect his personality. I wanted the film to feel like Marty himself. Maybe that’s why sometimes there are certain cuts that feel like his cuts, because they’re originating with him and his personality. Then, of course, his work is an outgrowth of his personality. But you know, the number of segments really, at first it was going to be one feature film. Then I quite quickly realized there was no way I could do it that way, because the childhood and early adulthood really needed time, so you could understand how deeply connected his work in general is to those early years. Once you do that, once you spend that first episode, then you need more time to get to the rest of it. Because essentially, the series is really the dance between the art and the life. They’re creating each other. Art’s creating life, life’s creating art, and at a certain point, we kind of ran out of life in a way. That’s the point where you’re like, “Okay, that’s the end”. So, it’s the dance between those two things.

MF: Was there any movie that you asked Mr. Scorsese about where you were surprised by his answer?

RM: Well, I mean, I was very intrigued by his answers to ‘Taxi Driver’. I talked to him about it. I asked, “What is it about you at that time that’s in that film?” And you can see him close his eyes and sort of be resistant, but also want to give an answer. He gives this extraordinary answer but over throughout, there’s this thread of the deep connection between what he’s going through as a person, his own suffering, his obsessions, and the films that he’s making.

MF: In the series, Mr. Scorsese talks says that in the stories he tells, the human struggle is what he is most interested in? Can you talk about his passion for that idea in terms of his filmography?

RM: I think overall, there’s a sort of sense of, as Nicholas Pileggi says, “Underdogs trying to score”, and very often, these people are struggling to become themselves. It’s like they want to become themselves, but in that process of trying to become themselves, like Jake LaMotta (in ‘Raging Bull’), for example, you can lose your soul, and that’s interesting too. The loss of the self, the loss of the soul, the kind of darkness that can come into sight of people. It’s not always good news in Scorsese’s universe.

MF: Finally, what will you remember most about making this series and what do you hope fans learn about Mr. Scorsese and his work that they did not already know?

RM: I mean, just having him in my life and the friendship that I have with him is such an immense reward. The idea that I was able to maybe give him back to the people that love him in a form that they didn’t know or anticipate, and to shed something new on the films and maybe bring people back to the films or to the films when they haven’t seen them, that to me is a great reward.

    • The movie is scheduled to shoot next year.

2011 drama ‘The Help’ certainly –– pun entirely intended and apologized for –– helped boost the careers of Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, since both were nominated for Oscars and Spencer took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy.

They’ve been looking to collaborate again since then for years and have now found the project in the shape of ‘Deck the Y’alls’, a new Christmas-set comedy.

It’s relatively early days for this one, with no director in place –– with a shoot planned for next year and Wanda Sykes also aboard to bring her comic stylings to the movie –– we’d expect it to be set up quickly.

The new movie, written by ‘Girls Trip’ scribe Tracy Oliver alongside Stefanie Williams, follows a New York baker named Rachel Stein (Chastain), who falls for Beau, a younger Southern gentleman, and heads to Charleston, South Carolina to spend Christmas with his family.

But over-protective matriarch Gladys Gibbes (Spencer) is a celebrity chef who clashes with Rachel.

There has been less entertaining news for the actor/producer, who saw the release of her Apple TV+ series ‘The Savant’ put on indefinite hold just three days before it was due to hit the streaming service.

The show, which stars Chastain, follows an undercover investigator known as “The Savant” who infiltrates online hate groups to stop domestic extremists before they act. Apple is seemingly worried about the series causing political blowback.

This was Apple’s statement on the delay:

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone ‘The Savant’. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.”

For her part, Chastain hit Instagram to explain that she’s “not aligned” with the decision to pause the show’s release…

The movie has the backing of Sandbox Studios, as well as Spencer’s ORIT Entertainment, Chastain’s Freckle Films and Sony Music Vision. According to Variety’s report, the producers are seeking distribution, so we’ll likely find out the release date once a partner is secured.

Moviefone: To begin with, Brett, I understand that you’ve been working on this idea with William Bridges for over 10 years. Can you talk about the process of writing this screenplay and why you were so passionate about telling this story?

Brett Goldstein: It was just an idea that stayed with us for so long. I think ultimately the thing I really liked is this is about two best friends and this connection that they have that I think is very relatable. Where they’re not partners, they’re not husband and wife, but they’re very close and what is that? Is that just friendship? What is love in that area? Making this film, me and Will just kept talking about it and seeing them over the years. Does that bond break or get stronger? That just all seemed interesting to me.

MF: Imogen, can you talk about your approach to playing Laura, her friendship with Simon, and creating that relationship on screen with Brett?

Imogen Poots: The approach was very collaborative on this film, and it’s the best feeling, really, with independent cinema because all you have is each other and you all want the best thing for the project. So, it just brings an amazing energy often to films like this, and of this nature. So, working with Brett was a dream and I think Laura is Laura because of Simon in the context of the story, and Simon is who he is because of her. So, I think it’s a beautiful, reactive relationship. All we had to do was be there for one another and everything else happened naturally. But in a way they’re like orbiting planets and it was cool to do this together.

MF: Brett, I know you are close friends with William. What is it like having your friend direct you? Can you talk about your onset working relationship with him?

BG: Well, he was brilliant because he had such a clear vision. I was really impressed because we’d written it together, so I had it in my head how I saw it and what he did is not how I imagined it and it was so much better the way he had a clear style for it and a real visual eye, which is, I guess you would need for it to be visual. But he was great. I think he was very uncomfortable directing these scenes of a steamy nature. I think that was the only time where he thought, “I wish we weren’t friends today.”

MF: Finally, can you talk about the “test” that Laura takes in the movie, how it changes her life, and if the test really existed, is that something you would take in real life?

IP: Right, there’s this idea we float in the movie that you could take a test and it would determine who you’re meant to be with, your soul mate. I think I would not take the test. I think it speaks to the insidious nature of technology trying to fix people. Like there’s a panic in conjunction with your emotions and with love and all these wonderful things that should really be found naturally. I’m a big believer that if we just pay more attention and we are more perceptive, more present, then I’m sure all things would happen in a different way rather than forcing it through these algorithms.

Landing on Apple TV+ on September 24th with the first episode (five more follow at the rate of one per week) is the fifth season of ‘Slow Horses’, which draws from Mick Herron’s source novel ‘London Rules’.

Proving itself to be something of a slow-burn sensation, ‘Slow Horses’ has been gaining in pop cultural awareness and adulation across the last couple of years, with awards coming its way and more promotion.

There are, naturally, more eyes on Season 5 than ever before (even if the running joke is that Apple has excellent shows precious few people watch or know about beyond the megahit ‘Severance’), and thankfully, it is more than deserving of the attention.

Smith and his writers continue to mine Mick Herron’s book series for comic brilliance and suitably twisty spy tales. This season’s story, set as a mayoral election grips London and shocking violence roils the capital, is loaded down with trademark quips and naturally great roles for its main cast.

There is, in fact, even more focus on the denizens of Slough House than ever this year, and it really works.

Returning director Saul Metzstein, has a clear eye for how the show works visually, and if it’s lighter on action compared to other shows, that’s not the real focus here.

Oldman continues to prove he’s the perfect Jackson Lamb (there is a joke about penguins and Batman that is so perfectly delivered, it might make you pause the show from laughing), and as usual he anchors the ensemble.

But everyone is on their A-game here, with a welcome boost of screen time for Christopher Chung as arrogant, nerdy tech expert Roddy Ho. While he’s the sort of character you usually prefer in small doses, Chung makes him likeable enough that it works to have him enjoy more of a spotlight.

‘Slow Horses’ remains one of the best shows on TV –– streaming or otherwise –– and Season Five is just more proof of why. Perfectly pitched in terms of tone and character, it’s a sweary, funny treat.
